it's easier to go from .wav to mp3 that's fine to).

quicktime pro has preset, export to movie to mpeg audio layer 3

Now, um, I'm sure they really asked a 100 to get that one

a .qtl file is a text file, written by QuickTime. if you have the

inside the qtl you will find the url to the video. load that in

[videoblogging] call for works

this is an urgent call for video documentary works (including vlogs)
for an Australian doco. festival Real Life on Film.

The requirements are:

1. needs to be online.

2. it must relate to commonwealth as a theme, which means:
i. you are in a commonwealth nation (for those who don't know, this
is former British Empire)
ii. the work is about a commonwealth nation
iii. or you can demonstrate relevance.

3. this is for individual works as well as vlogs.

Please note, I'm just forwarding this for someone else, and Richard
Moore, director of the festival, will be making all final curatorial
decisions.

If you think you have work that meets this criteria please get in

in ezedia you can get rollovers, cool. but stick a button on it then
the button gets the mouse action and not the rollover. stick the
button below the rollover, and most of the time the button can't
receive the mouse event.

this doesn't happen in livestage as you have much more scritpign

timestretching video clips that:
i was wondering--is there a simple way to do timestretching/time
compression of video clips with a fairly high degree of control.

the 'turtle slider' in imovie has very coarse settings for doing
such a thing. but let's say i wanted to take a 32-second clip and
scrunch it down to exactly 30 seconds without cutting anything out.
or maybe stretch it out to 35 seconds. any ideas?

in QT pro get a clip (say from any audio CD) that is exactly the
length you want (just set in and out points or shift select the
duration you need.

edit copy.
file new
paste

you now have a qt movie of the desired target length (ignore for now
not desired content).

but this to one side.

open your video clip, select all, edit copy.

go to clip A
select all
edit
add scaled (or stretch to selection or whatever it is these days)

your video is now the length (duration) you want.

get movie properties
delete the first track (from the audio cd since you don't want it)
file save as (always save as).

there is a qt movie called time.mov floating around out there, is a
text track movie and its one purpose is to let you easily do the
above.

around the 29/11/05 Ted Tagami mentioned about Re: [videoblogging]
making a vlog soft that:
I would like to add a link within my video. Can't you do this in QT Pro?

yes, and no.
using QT pro you can add a text track to QT. There is a special
category of text gtrack called href and ahref (and with QT pro you
can rename the text tracks).

each of these can contain time code and urls. so if you have a href
track and the user clicks at time a, then the url attached to that
will launch, if they click at time b, the url attached ot that will
launch. (remember a url could be another movie).

Ahref track, on other hand will *automatically* launch that url at
that time in your movie. this is best used in relation to frames (so
movie plays in frame A and content autoloads in frame B).

this is clumsy to do by hand, but possible, textation is shareware
that makes it a snap.

alas no. first of all ezedia doesn't write absolute paths, only
relative, so all the media in the media directory are the videoclips
that Kate's movie needs (different to the rhizomes that she links to).

This is an excellent example of the problems with syndication at the
moment. This is very good work. sophisticated, very very easy to make
in Ezedia (it really did take one class to teach them how to do all
this), and an excellent example of one sort of vlogging. But it can't
syndicate because each video you add to your project becomes a child
movie in ezedia. This is why it can make cool things, like movies
inside of movies.

RSS breaks this stuff, which is why it currently condemns us to TV in a box.

You don't lose the text associated with the blog post with RSS.
In fact the text is a very integral part of it.
In FireAnt, we've always treated the blog post as a whole unit, and
strive to keep all the metadata in tact.

yeah I know. the problem in my context is that the video contains
'child' elements that live outside of the parent video. you download
the parent into FireAnt and it can't find the 'child' movies since
the internal connections to it are all relative, so the movie breaks.
FireAnt has no way of knowing that it has to download a pile of other
assets too.

In livestage pro this can be fixed by hard coding urls to the child
movies, so they work whereever they are, but as with the rhizome
templates, these break via any form of RSS becausse unless you want
to hand code in Livestage the url to the xml file is always relative,
and FireAnt can't know that to play movie x, it must also download
xml file y.

you always indicate (must indicate) licencing information in the

Cinema is non-linear before you decide on the edit as well. And when
hypertext is read it too become linear (you choose one path out of a group
of possibles). The difference is that there is one central person doing
the edit in cinema whereas in hypertext the edit is performed individually
with each reading. The point is that in cinema is that the in-between
clips is part of the meaning and the same in true in hypertext (with the
reader creating

good points which i'd forgotten. when you are editing film there is
no intrinsic point at which it *has* be cut (yes rules of continuity
but they are not rules of grammar, all films remain understandable if
they cross the line, break continuity etc), and also cutting doesn't
'break' the shot. A 30 second close up of gun is still a close up of
gun if it is 10 seconds. (this makes them very different to words.)

this is one aspect of film's granularity, which blogs have
appropriated (my remark that hyperrtext is cinema's revenge on word).
you link from a part to another part (shorten shot A and link to a
shortened Shot B) and it creates new meanings. link from blog post
(part of post) to blog post. NOT blog to blog. it is parts to parts.
etc etc. (all this is old hat for hypertext, blogs, etc. the only
novelty if that is seeing that these relations have always been
present in cinema).

I'm particularly bummed by all the schmutz and dreck littering the
animation. I thought H.264 was a significant improvement in codec
technology but I sure ain't seein' it. Of all the tests I did only
versaly.m4v (which has very little movement) is acceptable.

I noticed that when iPod video mode is selected, no adjustment params
are presented to do any tweeking. Am I hosed? Is this as good as it gets?

If anyone has any insights here please let me know.

no. don't rely on presets. select exprot to qt movie, click options,
choose H.264 and set the settings.

QuickTime (and anything else) can make that:
using 3ivx as per Verid's new tutorial video, my MOV files are fully
twice the filesize as my WMV files.

The MOVs are slightly better quality ... but not so much so as to be
worth 2x the file size IMHO. I mean I'm still gonna have to find a
way to do it as I want to be on the iPod ... but I just cant seem to
get a MOV to a simialr (and quite good) quality/filesize ratio as I
can for my WMVs.

i haven't seen michael's latest guide but if it still suggests
forcing keyframes at the rate of every n frmaes then yes, your
results will be poor in terms of final file size. H.264 and 3.ivx
both support natural keyframes. enabling this is much better and
usually leads to smaller file sizes with little or no loss in quality.

see the tests i did in september URL:
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/archives/2005/09/02/h264-v-mpeg4-with-3ivx/
where you can see that h.264 is better than 3ivx at low bit rates

there a way to code the html so that it detects the pixel size and

use pageot, it reads the QT file to get dimensions. Mac, PC. free,

LINK INSIDE OF YOUR VIDEO??? that:
Can anybody tell me how to include a link that is click able in your
video??? Thanks for your time.

in QT you can:

1. add a href parameter to the embed tag inside embed just include
href=url of video or page target=myself (to load video in same
location - if targetting a page target=_blank,
target=quicktimeplayer loads what href points to in quicktime
player.

2. there are several software tools that will add this into the mov
file itself (livestate, ezedia QTi, there used to some freeware
things too)

3. if you want multiple links (parts of the image, and/or time based)
then you need to use something like livestage, or ezedia QTi.

no idea for other formats. ezedia Qti - I taught media undergrads how
to do all that using this in around 20 minutes.

nothing is supposed to happen. the difference is now you can edit,
compress etc. so some things are available that weren't there before
(under edit can you see things like Add to Movie? if yes, you have
pro. That's it.

y ou don't need Pro to add href to the embed tag. that is plain vanilla html

something i missed though:

you can add a text track to a qt video or audio track, the text track
contains timecode and urls. click on movie during nominated timecode
and that url loads. Textation is shareware that does this very easily.

[videoblogging] rhizome 6

2005-09-14 Thread Adrian Miles
hi all

rhizome 6 template is ready (I think). See URL:
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/archives/2005/09/14/rhizome-six/

this one plays single video in left video pane, and in right pane you
can have 5 loaded and which plays is controlled by clicking on the
right video pane - click and another video loads. There are no
controllers visible, so if you use this you probably need to provide
instructions in the accompanying blog post (for those new here, I
work on the assumption that blog video should be interactive as a
general condition and interactivity should be more than a button (or
a controller)).

have fun and please email if you use it.

  US, who
sees the event from as closely as possible ...
...snip...
neighborhood, providing you with his second-hand reporting as he selects
  quotes
from interviewed witnesses later much later.

it isn't a cute example. It is what each wants. I do not want US news
sources, which is why there are a (small) number of australian
foreign correspondents placed around the world. And we have quite a
few in Asia since that is of regional relevance. There cannot be
Australian 'citizen journalists' all through, let's see, most of the
world, that's why CNN and BBC World work.

It's an impossibility. If something happens outside the three largest
cities in any country odds are you won't be able to find a Danish person
living there who is willing to give an account.

Not that it matters. Unless you are looking for an account of 'how the
city feels' the local won't be able to give the Danish angle as well as a
journalist.

I think any argument that wants to reify individuals as pure sources
is just problematic. Apart from the idea of pure source which is,
well, silly, the assumptions that individuals are better sources
than, for example, collectives, should also be questioned. I guess
the unstated idealisation of individualism needs to justified.

If its in that category then its definately not the first, theres

I dont know what reputation Motorola has for mobile phones worldwide,

reputation much the same here is my sense of it. they have
interesting design gimmicks but Nokia have the best usability I've

But I'm wondering if I should play with any of the other settings
above to reduce the file size without compromising audio or video in
any significant way and without reducing the window size. For example,
I need a primer on things like MPEG-4 Improved vs MPEG-4 Basic, data
rate, key frame, etc.

mpeg4 improved better. key frames. natural keyframes usually better
than arbitrary setting. the best modern codecs work ouit for
themselves where keyframes ought to go. if you add keyframes a lot
then a) they add a lot to final size for *no* change i quality
(talking head for 15 seconds, at 15ps, thats 225 frames, a decent
codec needs one keyframe at start and that's it, so if you have one
every 5 seconds (75 frames) you've added 2 additional keyframes that
add a lot to file size but virtually nothing to perceptible quality.

finally I'd only be outputting audio at 44.1 if you are a) making
high quality music or b) sound works and this is *very* important to
you, otherwise you can drop that a lot, particularly if it is only
voice.

yep, which is as problematic as any other value, but this is my point

Various types of permission forms that:
Actually a lot of vloggers use music they don't have a license for
in their vlogs. The fact is that no one bothers suing them
because their using the music has virtually no real impact.

this is nonsense. I can't say that strongly enough. Get slashdotted
and your music will matter. Get shown via *any* commercial media and
your music will matter. People once said this about anything on the
web, it is not the case now. Just because big media haven't caught
on, doesn't mean that when they do, they won't play serious catch up.

Yes, vlogging could be considered to be one step up from home
movies. With vlogging you can share what might otherwise be home
movies with friends, even the whole world if the whole world was
interested enough to drop by and watch them.

absolutely not. a home movie is played to your immediate
family/friends in home. It is not broadcast/distributed. A blog is a
publication.

In video sales if you buy a home VHS tape and show it to a school
group, you've broken the law. The home VHS is for home use only. The
copy you buy for schools is for showing to a group and (usually)
costs approx. 10 x the domestic cost. Such things exist and are
standard practice. that this might be breached every now and then,
just like photocopying a whole book because you can't get your own
copy, doesn't make it legal. Minor moments don't matter, when it
becomes a standard practice, it does.

Technically, you might be right insofar as legalities are
concerned. However, like those labels that they used to have on
cigarette packages which said it was illegal not to break them, a
lot of laws are really ignored.

which is what napster thought. Which is what lots of low budget film
makers thought until their film can't be legally shown anywhere.
There *are* stories of people who have film screened, only to receive
letter from legal firm requesting tens of thousands of dollars since
that is how much the rights to the lyrics/music costs.

I really think videobloggers are naive if they think these rules
don't apply to them. Without clearance your material cannot be shown
in awards/festivals and cannot be broadcast. Basically you don't want
to be the person that is the first one pursued for this, because the
industry will not play nicely.

In the documentary, the filmmaker uses tapes of conversations
regarding negotiation and a series of photos he snapped on outings
with the fellow who would never sign a release. This was good
enough to get accepted and played in film festivals. However, I am
assured by people working on a documentary on a related theme that
Based on a True Story would never pass muster for commercial
broadcast by a cable or television station or even for general
theatrical release.

releases are quite a separate legal issue from copyright which is
what I was referring to. Use CD x. it has already been published, it
already has copyright. That is quite different from whether person X
has signed a release to be filmed, or not (this is not big news in
documentary, did Bert Reynolds have to sign a release for Sherman's
March, I doubt it - here it crosses strongly into aspects of
journalistic practice).

Also it makes no difference if you think your blog is 'commercial' or
not. commercial' is not a criteria applied in copyright protection,
it is about authorised republication. The law doesn't care if you did
it for free, or not. *You* cannot decide to give away someone else's
'property' for free, that's what copyright says.

influential citizen journalism who handed out basically a Zine.
It told the truth that traditional media wasnt/couldnt do.

yes, this discussion is confusing US *tv* news which is generally
intensely inward looking and quite shallow as all news. It isn't.
Here I watch an international orientated news at 6.30, then another
one at 9.30, and if i want sustained current affairs I have late
night live on radio from 10pm (people like Chomsky regular guests) or
Lateline on national TV (who have similar regular guests satellited
in from around the world). it isn't better, it is different.

Also generalisations don't work. The New York Times is still a
qualilty broadsheet, those who want and seek deeper information can,
and do, just because TV has had to evolve to a banal common
denominator it doesn't mean all media.

Finally, I'm a member of the KKK and I videoblog things that

264 until 2007.

laughsIf you want everyone to be able to view your stuff, don't use
H.264. Period. End of conversation. I'm going to use it because my
audience is small, is basically only those interested in
experimenting (so probably have QT 7 or something already), and
that's the community I participate in. Im minor media, not mass. :-)
/laughs

B4 I got here the group had already decided 2007 was
the starting date for H.264. And that was an ORDER or I would be
excommunicated from the group.

I didn't realise we'd become some sort of Catholic sect :-) All I'm
doing is experimenting. Always have, always will. That's my schtick.
Thats probably why I started videoblogging in 2000. I didn't wait for
permission, I just started exploring what it *might* be. Still am.
H.264 is a better codec for internet delivered video. That is very
very clear. So I'm going to start using it, I might double up for a
bit, but probably not, don't have time to make two of everything and
as I said, I'm at the shallower end of the long tail :-)

I was treated like an idiot for
starting with H.264 by all the experts in this group. So I yielded to
the group pressure, re-did all my posts to non-H.264 and nobody beat
me up since.

Now you come along and tell me I'm an idiot for NOT using H.264.
Would someone set up a poll so I can tell which way to go please?
This group has me totally confused.

Sorry, you're not an idiot for using it, or not using it. That's like
saying you're a dill for not using QuickTime (well, I think you are a
dill if you don't, but that's just rationale opinion), or mac or pc
or for not driving a European car since after all they 'get' driving.
Confusion is good. We need more noise - noise as productive
interruption of signals that otherwise don't get changed.

What I am *scared* about is that H.264 might not happen because
everyone will wait, and then decide that since no one has used it
we'll ignore it. It rocks. I think we are the cutting edge and it is
up to us to get others to adopt. I would hate H.264 to go the way of
beta tape, all because those who might have responsibility for making
this change confused that with building a bigger audience.

there is no problem :-)

H.264 is better. If you want to use it, use it, if your audience are

If you prefer to maximise audience (for whatever reason) then you

Stuff is happening all over the planet. Unless it is directly related

I liked what Michael said about balance. I can go for that.

I understand better the concerns of other members better. Not easy

as Andreas pointed out here a while back, this is already the case
with the iTunes music store. What you purchase is a licence to use.
This is capital's response to digital technology where scarcity no

how can it determine value?) and so invents a licencing scheme that,

it goes at least as high as $79.95 for home DSL in some (non-rural)

there are still lots of places in California where there is still no DSL
service (I'm talking citites here, not rural)
there are even more places in California where you can't get DSL anymore
(gone bye bye)

which is why I keep banging on about compression and bandwidth. It is
bandwidth that costs, not storage, and your *viewers* are paying (a
lot) for it. If you make 5 minute videos that are 20MG a pop, have 10

[videoblogging] h.264 (again)

2005-09-01 Thread Adrian Miles
hi all

finally got round to capturing some DV and have done some H.264 v.
3ivx testing.

Outcomes at URL:
http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vlog/archives/2005/09/02/h264-v-mpeg4-with-3ivx/

contrary to some experience reported here the difference in quality,
at same data rate, is dramatic. H.264 eats 3ivx for breakfast. BTW
the 320 x 240 clip would have a data rate of around 2MB a minute.

I am having a lot of people tell me they can't see my videos on my
blog. I use a mac, but check them at work on a pc and they work, but I
have had people on pc's using Firefox and the latest QT but still

downloaded it. did you compress it using apple's mpeg4 codec or 3ivx?

there are settings in 3ivx that will break it in qt player but will
work if you have 3ivx installed. they explain this on their web page
somewhere. if it is plain vanilla mpeg4 then should be fine.

I haven't see the vlog involved but several people have lost jobs due
to blogging. Well documented. Most famous would be
http://www.dooce.com/, though the author there happily acknowledges
that how she characterised her work place was wrong. Another was the
google dude who got the sack, for discussing google, in spite of the
fact that they had signed a NDA clause in their employment conditions.

A blog is a publication. Same as a newspaper. Exactly the same

Not always true. Apple sues or shuts down bloggers who reveal rumors,

Not sure the specifics, but there was a recent court decision that
decided against an individual who claimed media rights.

this was a blogger claiming specific rights that only apply in US law
regarding freedom of speech or press. Apple succeeded in their action
*because* the blog was a publication. All the case demonstrated was
that
a) a blog is a publication
b) but bloggers are *not* journalists
so
c) don't enjoy the same rights as journalists in the united states

this does not affect the status of the blog as a publication :-)

I recently upgraded to QuickTime 7 Pro. Yesterday I took advantage
of the 24 hour free pass on Lynda.com and began to run the Quick
Time tutorials (available only for QT5 Pro). The problem I'm having
is that by the time QT got to 7, they'd changed all the commands, or
so it seems. I can find some of them in a different format, but I
can't find all. You'd think that in a more advanced version you
would be able to do all of the things in previous versions. An
example is that in QT5 you can skew a section of your video, but I
can find no adjust command in QT7. There are a number of
other things described in the help video that I cannot find in QT7.
The help menu for QT7 is not helpful at all. (For example, in one
place, it directs me to the options button, which I cannot find
anywhere.

Anybody else using QT7 pro and finding this same difficulty, or am I
just being dense again?

some have gone. you can't skew anymore but in QT 7 you can scale,
change width/height of a video track (breaking aspect ratio), flip,
rotate and so on. In QT 5 (and i think 6) you could also drag it
around the movie window to place a smaller video. Now you use the
offset numbers - what you lose in free form work you gain in pixel
accuracy.

the options button you mention. which options you looking for? Most
of the stuff is still there (i can only assume skew got lost because
no one ever used it - I've used QT pro as authoring environment for 5
years and never used it and still haven't seen any work that used it,
I know doesn't mean isn't useful) so ask away :-)

btw there's a QT 7 manual in pdf which is worth getting. I've got a
copy of it at:

What the hell!?!?!

Does anyone know how to fix it? I tried everything in the differnt
options and everything. Please let me know..

spend $20 on the QT mpeg plugin . MPEG1/2 is diff. to mpeg4 and so
QuickTime can't legally do stuff with since different licencing. The
problem (I think) is mpeg1 muxes sound and video, so that is why you
lose the sound (I guess QT privileges vision over sound?).

work round.
play video in QT, turn on record and record it separately (i have
students do this all the time as they have still cameras thaqt shoot
mpeg1 format).
install http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php
get the mpeg plugin for QT

and before everyone whines. MPEG1 was ratified in 1991, and pretty
much deprecated in mid 90s, it is 14 years old and a real clunky
format. There are ways to get into it, but if a computer year = 7
normal years then you're trhing to open up someting that is 98 years
old. Imagine that was a car, then you'd understand that you just
wouldn't assume that your contemporary tools and equipment and spare
parts would work/fit with your 1904 whatever it might be.

around the 9/8/05 Christopher mentioned about Re: [videoblogging]
Can't seem to make my .mov file stream that:
Is there any program out there that allows me to render an .avi from
Premiere, shove it in, and generate a nice streaming .mov file?

quicktime pro as long as you use a qt friendly codec in the avi

Re: [videoblogging] No Progressive QT for Premiere! (was:Can't seem to make my .mov file stream)

2005-08-09 Thread Adrian Miles

around the 10/8/05 Charles Hope mentioned about [videoblogging] No
Progressive QT for Premiere! (was:Can't that:
Are you sure you're talking about Premiere 6.5? There's nothing like
either of those available on my copy.

Also, I don't see any remaining plugins yet to be installed; no Adobe
Media Encoder as Adam suggested, and still no Save for Web option.

if you've got QT installed then premiere is using the QT engine. But
it has dumbed it down. all of this stuff is sitting there in QT,
premiere just isn't talking to it.

Easiest solution is to get QT pro (but on PC problem whether you get
6 or 7, others can comment, if there is 7 available get that even if
beta, at least you won't lose your licence when you do move to 7
later).

export from premiere to DV, or avi or something. open this in QT
player. There you will get a lot more options for compression and
settings. Alternatively get Cleaner from autodesk. Does much the same
with more export options, batch processing (though on os x can do
this using QT pro with automator), though it is 10 x price of QT pro.

As Andreas likes to say, QT pro is the swiss army knife application
for this sort of work.
