Jailbreaking 7.04 - iBlindTech 56
Hi all, On the latest episode of iBlindTech, Hugo joins us today to walk through jailbreaking iOS 7.04. With Apple’s latest beta release of iOS 7.1, it appears they have closed the exploits that allow this jailbreak. Also many of the problems that users were experiencing when this jailbreak was first released have now been fixed. So if you’re considering a jailbreak, now’s the time to jump on it. Re: Bread Crumb GPS
Hi Ward, There’s both a free and paid version of an app called MyWay which works very well. Link app store description of free version below. In short though, it will allow you to drop a series of breadcrumbs which you can save as a route, modify or add to at a later time and of course start following from either end whenever you like. You can setup as many of these routes as you like. https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/myway-lite/id494516234?mt=8 GPS orientation aid which provides distance and directional information to a selected point of interest. Such a point can be an address from your address book or a point of a self-defined route. The non-free version of MyWay also allows file exchange via the iTunes filesharing option. There, you can also import files containing nodes in Open Street Map format giving access to hundreds of POI in the proximity such as bus stops or restaurants. Thanks to VoiceOver, visually impaired and blind people have unlimited access to this app. We recommend to turn on speaking of VoiceOver hints. iBlindTech 54 - Getting the most from your Apple ID - is posted
Hi All In this episode of iBT I take a look at how to configure your iPhone with multiple Apple IDs. This is particularly useful where you have multiple people in your family using iOS devices. In short, each Apple ID comes with the ability to make purchases in the app iTunes stores and access to iCloud services such as iCloud backup and an iCloud email address. I suggest using one singular Apple ID to make purchases through the App iTunes stores across your family. Than setup separate Apple ID's for use with the iCloud services. By doing this you will be able to avoid purchasing the same apps and media multiple times in your family whilst each person retains there own backup and iCloud storage space amongst other iCloud services. Please find a direct link to the podcast media file below and if you have any questions please email me directly as I am not always able to keep up with list traffic: http://www.iblindtech.com/storage/iBT-54-AppleID.mp3 Garth www.iblindtech.com/ Search for iBlindTech in iTunes or your favourite pod catcher to subscribe to the iBlindTech Democast. Re: AppStore Updates - apps stay in Update screen indicating Open for days after updating
I haven't noticed a way of turning this off, the one good thing is that at least it seems to sort the apps such that the ones which have not been updated yet are at the top, irrespective of when the update was made available. Also I quite like to be able to go back and check the changes and updates. I can nderstand how this clutter would be annoying for some though . On 28/09/2013, at 7:53 AM, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. kramlinger.ke...@mayo.edu wrote: Hi, I may have missed comments on this given the recent list traffic. If so, I apologize. I’m used to updating apps from the Update tab, and then the apps, once updated, disappear from the Update list. In iOS7 thus far, it appears the app stay on the update tab for days after updating and indicate “open”, confirming they have been updated. Is there any way to remove this clutter from the Update screen, so when I go it to the Update screen, the only items there are the ones that are available for updating? I couldn’t find any info under iTunes and AppStore in Settings about this. Thanks, Keith -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: turning on VO on new iPad
I am not sure why you have had this experience. I have setup numerous iPads and iPhones straight out of the box with the triple click of the home button. You do not need sighted assistance to do this. This will also work on an old iphone that has been reset to factory defaults and upon which Voice Over has not previously been setup. 1. Press the power button and hold for a second or two. 2. Allow 30 seconds or so for the device to boot up fully. 3. Press the home button once to wake the screen just in case you've waited too long for the boot up. 4. Triple click the home button and Voice Over will start up. The above instructions are for a brand new device or one which has been reset to factory defaults. You will notice a section on the screen which Voice Over will read out in different languages each time you swipe on and off it. This is where you now need to do a double tap in order to start the initial configuration of the device. Re: Can I put IPhone Apps on A thumb Drive? What folder in iTunes would I Copy them into?
You'll find the apps in a folder call Mobile Applications within the iTunes Media folder which in turn is in the iTunes folder. When transferring them back you can just paste them back into the Add to iTunes Automatically folder which is also within the iTunes Media folder. This is not really necessary, if the worst happened and your computer died, them you'd be able to re-download all the apps again. For example if you have your phone set to back up via iCloud, you can restore a new phone from this backup and not use the computer at all. However, one good reason to backup the applications in a separate location though is to allow you to retain an old version of the apps. For example, if a particular app is updated by the developer and made inaccessible, you can roll back the version of the installed app to the prior one. Re: Question about emailing with fleksy
As with any email you create on iOS outside the mail app, it will automatically be from the default account. However once you've got the email there it is easy to change the account from which it is being sent. Simply double tap on where you see the account, i.e. your email address. Re: How do I keep a permanent copy of the books I download to the iPhone
Hi Neil, I am guessing from your question that you are purchasing audio books from the iTunes store on your phone. If so, I would recommend that you connect your phone to iTunes, and than choose the Transfer Purchases option from the File Menu. This will transfer a copy of your purchased book to your computer and when you delete it from your phone, it will not be deleted from your computer. My apologies if my assumptions are wrong. Re: Moving apps into folders?
Hi Raul and others It's actually 20 apps with the iPad. I like your idea about the triple tap to mark for moving and than another triple tap for dropping. Nice. Like you I don't have much trouble with the current situation however it is certainly a bit fiddly at times. Unlike others I don't usually go to the bother of moving things in and out of my doc just in order to move than from page to page. I think this has been made quite simple in the last few iterations of iOS. One helpful trick is to remember that you don't need to place your finger on the actual app to do the double tap and hold. So if yo have an app on page one and want to move it to page two, you can put your focus on the app than do the double tap and hole on the far left of the screen. This way you have plenty of space to move your finger to the left and thus move the app to the second screen. This said there's definitely a place for using the Doc when moving lots of apps around and or creating folders. Hi jordan, The folders are exactly aligned in the rows and columns. I find it much easier to move a folder next to an app I want to put in it then the other way around. If you move an app and you accidently let go in the wrong spot you may put it into another folder or create a new one. If you move a folder you can really go with the little beeps as to how many spots you moved it left, right, up or down. Hence if I have an app in the very right place in row 4 and I want to move that into a folder that sits in row 2 and column 2 (second from the left edge) then I move the folder into row 4 column 4 which means into the position the app is in, this will push the app into column 3 on row 4 which means it will be just to the left of the folder. I would simply double tap and hold the folder, then drag it straight right 2 beeps which means it's now in column 4 on row 2, then I drag it straight down 2 beeps. Now I look for the app to the left of the folder, I double tap and hold on it and drag it to the right just a bit until it says it's on the folder, then let go. Now I can drag the folder back to where I want it. This primarily is only a matter of practice and as long as you have good special awareness and are able to drag your finger straight across a row or straight up or down you'll get better at it. What will make it more unpredictable is if you have problems with the directions, e.g. you think you are dragging your finger straight across row 2, for example, but in fact you are dragging it across and down or across and up. Re: Various USB Chargers, Interchangeable?
I don't believe i stated that one shouldn't follow the care instructions for the particular battery being used, of course one should. As you said tips for using Nicad batteries still apply to Nicad batteries. However some of the common knowledge around caring for nicad batteries should not be applied to the newer LI batteries. I should probably have said some rather than much of the knowledge should be thrown away. However they definitely shouldn't be treated the same. Garth On 08/04/2013, at 6:51 PM, Christopher Chaltain chalt...@gmail.com wrote: Are you talking about cables that have a micro USB connector on one end that plug into your device or a standard USB connector on the other end that goes into your PC or an AC adapter? In the first case, I personally wouldn't hesitate to interchange those cables. A few years ago, the European Commission, and other international groups, settled on the micro USB connector as the standard connector to be used on cell phones to charge the device. This was specifically done to allow customers to use the same cable for multiple devices. The idea was to protect the environment by not having to manufacture or dispose of as many chargers for our electronic devices. Apple obviously chose not to follow this standard. In the second case, given how little power is conveyed through the USB port, I'd still feel comfortable interchanging such cables and chargers. Probably the best thing though, is to use the charger that came with your device or do a bit more research until your comfortable. One correction to Garth's statement below. It's best to follow the battery care practices for the type of battery being used. Tips on using NiCad batteries still apply to NiCad batteries. The change is that more and more devices use Lithium Ion batteries, and the care and feeding for LI batteries is different from the NiCad batteries that used to be so popular. On 04/08/2013 03:06 AM, Garth Humphreys wrote: There is no issue with using the various chargers with different devices. Given that the charger/manufacture is at least half decent. Re: question regarding the iCloud backup?
I have 3 separate devices backed up to iCloud all in the same 5Gb standard iCloud account. If you check under settingsiCloudManageStorage you will find the size of your current backup and also if you have any other older backups from different devices or incarnations of your current device. If you've ensured the next backup is not going to be larger than the available space and you are still having an error, you can try deleting the current backup, and re-initiating the backup. Of course, prior to deleting the iCloud backup, I would recommend that you connect to your computer and get a up-to-date local backup. Re: Question regarding contacts
When you say that the person you have deleted from contacts still exists in your messages app, do you mean that there message history still exists or that when you use the Add contact button they still appear there or finally that they still appear as an auto complete option in the To field. I guess you are referring to them still appearing in the autocomplete list. If so, I haven't looked into this for the messages app but it is probably similar to the mail app. With the mail app, there's no way to remove old email addresses from the autocomplete field. Thankfully though the list is sorted by how frequently a particular address is used. I once had made a mistake in typing in an email address in the mail app and from that point forward, the mail app would offer this incorrectly spelt email address as an autocomplete option. I didn't realise it at first and used the incorrect address a few times. It took a while before this incorrect email address was deprecated in favour of the correctly entered one. Re: Episode 28 of iBlindTech - Pages Intro is out
Absolutely, all please send your feedback to apple about the accessibility issues in Pages. The issue with renaming documents is one that I have been expecting to be fixed for a while now and the more people who complain about it the better. Having said this, the work around does work reliably enough for me for those rare occasions when I want to actually want to rename a document. The most reliable way I have found is to actually find the document you want to rename by moving yur finger on the screen an than keeping your finger on it while you toggle Voice Over off with your other hand. Once Voice Over goes off, lift your finger from the screen slightly and replace it for two seconds or so than you can remove your finger and toggle Voice Over back on. You should find yourself in the renaming field as I did on the Podcast. Re: Restoring From iCloud
You would see the backup of your phone during a restore of the phone or the setup of a new device on the same ID. So if you went to Settings, General Reset and chose to erase all data and settings, you would then need to setup the device again. During this process you should have the option to restore it from the iCloud backup. I am just giving you an example of when you would use the backup, not suggesting you do it :) Garth On 25/10/2012, at 11:09 AM, Bobby Druesedow bo...@druesedow.com wrote: Can someone tell me how to restore from iCloud? Instead, this time I wanted to show one of the use cases for the app. In other words, I wanted to show you why I find the app so valuable in my day to day life. The episode is a recording of myself using the app on my bus ride to work. I hope you enjoy. Re: Subtle noise when shaking iPhone 5?
This is completely normal. It is some part of the camera. I think the camera has something like five lenses and I have heard that the noise is due to a floating lens. I thought of taking it into my nearest Apple store, but the noise is so subtle that I know we won't be able to hear it in a crowded store. I also tend to worry about my new gadgets a little obsessively, so it may well be totally normal. The device, certainly, functions well. Re: iPad mail question
I think you are actually getting notifications from your notifications centre. Go into settings notifications Mail. Turn off alert style notifications for your favorites and For all email accounts. Having mailset to fetch manually might actually make this worse. Because when you access your mail account it will then check for new mail and give you all the notifications at once. iBlindTech 26 is out. iOS Customising
This weeks episode takes a look at customising Voice Over on an iPad. I needed to do this because of the bug in iOS6 which can cause the loss of all Voice Over settings after performing a hard reboot. I had done this a number of times since updating to iOS 6 with no issues however when my iPad restarted with no Voice Over this time, I knew what the problem was. The one good thing is that it gave me the opportunity to do this podcast. I hope you find it helpful. Re: Downcast - Is there a way to import mp3 file from Dropbox into Downcast?
Hi Keith Out of interest, try totally clearing out your app switcher and restarting the phone prior to doing the export/import. Re: Downcast - Is there a way to import mp3 file from Dropbox into Downcast?
Sounds like you are doing everything properly. When I do this, and get to the point of tapping th the export button, it brings up a list of available apps including Downcast. All works well. Maybe its something to do with the size of the file. I have only imported shortish files in this manner, i.e. around 20Mb. This is just speculation though. It was weird i that even if you didn't have the US voice enabled for the rotor, the Use compact voice toggle would still appear in settings and would appear to do nothing. For me in Australia I had the default voice set to my own region but never was abled to get the HQ Karen voice. I was confused when I first got my new iPad because it seemed like the use compact toggle did nothing, than when I added the US vice to the rotor I noticed that it was this voice which was the HQ one. Obviously the nature of the bug meant that those of you in the US would never have noticed this issue. In any case this bug has now been corrected under iOS6. It was with delight that I got the HQ Karen voice on my iPad shortly after updating it. Re: Four Email Questions
Yes, calendar is the same. That is you can add your gmail or windows live calendar to the list of available calendars on your device. This is the same with notes and contacts, etc. This can be really handy for instances where you want a shared calendar and a private calendar. For example I have my wives mail account on my phone but have her mail and contacts turned off. I have calendar turned on though and this way I can view whats happening for our family on her calendar. Your iCloud account also supports this of course. Each of the different services i.e. hotmail, gmail, iCloud and others support some or all of the features. In some cases like gmail, the available features will depend on whether you have it setup as exchange or with the gmail defaults. Re: Sluggish iPhone voice over
Hi Reggie If you are finding that VO is just generally sluggish in various parts of your phone then this is not related in any way to the up coming iOS release. VO is not like Siri in that it doesn't need to check in with apple servers to provide feedback. Re: zelo
Hi Rob The setting is there. It is just called Remote Control. It needs to be turned on. It is under the heading Audio. All the settings are on one page under various headings. You will firstly find a heading called Audio Alerts. The setting you mentioned finding called Talk button up, is under this heading. Next there are a group of settings under the Heading Vibration and then further settings under Visual alerts and finally there is a heading called Audio. It is this last heading you are looking for. The option you want is the first setting under this heading and it's called remote control. When you have it toggle on, you will be able to use either the play pause button on your head phone controls too start and stop broadcasting or the two finger double tap that you initially asked about. BTW the, talk button up, setting you mentioned finding controls whether or not you hear a beep when you stop broadcasting. Anyone wanting to can add me to their contacts on Zello also. My handle is just iBlindTech. I have also setup an iBlindTech channel and I spend some time each day on the app. There is a good community of Blind and vision impaired tech enthusiasts developing on the various channels. Episode 21 of iBlindTech is out, The Apple Blue Tooth Keyboard
This weeks episode is a look at Apples BT Keyboard. I give a physical description, walk through of the available commands and features and finish by talking about how well the keyboard pairs with iOS devices. I covered most, if not all, the commands but please feel free to leave a comment on the site if you think of any I missed, there's bound to be one or two. I am planning to cover the specific keystrokes available when in editing mode in a future podcast as I only touched briefly on these here. Re: moving apps and made a mess--please help
Hi Paul The dock refers to the four apps at the bottom of your screen that stay the same no matter which page you are on. These are probably something like mail, safari phone and music. Yu mentioned moving your finger up to move the apps from page to page. You need to move the apps left or right. Left to go towards page one and right to go to higher pages. You might find a couple of podcasts I did on moving apps useful. Episode 10 and 11 discuss moving apps and the basics of folders. Re: A Heads-Up On The Soon-To-Be-Released New Version of the TV Guide App for iOS
I assume this is US only I'd love a good tv guide Sent from my iPhone On 18/08/2012, at 12:11, M. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu wrote: Hello Fellow Television Fans: A new version of the TV Guide app should be released within the next couple of either days or weeks. While the new version has a different look and feel, it includes several new features and added functionality that I will let you discover for yourself. The best part is that it is marvelously VoiceOver accessible. In fact, TV Guide has gone out of their way to make sure that we, as blind and low vision users, can enjoy the same functionality as our sighted counterparts. And for you pucker-butts, I am not violating any NDAs in posting to the list. The reason I am posting is to: 1. Inform you that the new version of the App is VoiceOver ready; including the setup and settings areas. 2. Let you know that the new app has a new look and feel that may take a little getting used to but is well worth the effort. 3. If you like reviewing programming via the Favorite channels list, don't worry, it's still there but in a slightly different location but with added functionality. 4. Thanks to the programmers, now VoiceOver users can double tap on any channel number in the general listings grid, to see only the day's listings for that one particular channel Without having to add the channel to the Favorites list. 5. Let you know that the new version of the app will now let you save your Favorite channels, shows, etc in the Cloud so you can access them on all your iOS devices and the TV Guide website. That's right. Select your Favorite channels and/or television shows complete with alerts, and have them synchronized across all your iOS devices. 6. Encourage you to, once you've familiarize yourself with the new app, and assuming that you enjoy it, go to the App store and give the app a good review so that the people at TV Guide will know that we appreciate their efforts. Apps which sync data to iCloud typically have a setting within the apps settings which allow you to govern what or if any data is synced. Re: My Daily Thoughts.
You can track all sorts of things in Daily Tracker. Another option which may not have been considered because it is marketed as more of a notes/list app is List Recorder. You can use list recorder as a very effective diary. Just setup a folder for your diary and add entries as normal. The thing I like about it is that if you don't want to type much you could just put in an audio recording and just speak your entry. Sorry I haven't really followed this thread. Has anyone installed Day One on there Mac since the recent updates to both the iOS and Mac versions of the app? I bought both of these a while back as I wanted something that would sync between the two platforms. At the time the Mac version wasn't really that accessible or at least it certainly wasn't a pleasure to use. Hi Jodie Whether apps appear upon your other devices automatically is dependant upon your iTunes settings. If the Fleksy app isn't showing up on your iPad, you could just go to the app store on your iPad and download it. It may appear as though you are going to be purchasing it again but you won't be charged again. Fwd: Dropbox file sharing
Yep, but what's the easiest way to round trip a document you've edited in Pages. I mean you should be able to open it from the dropbox app but getting the edited version synced back to dropbox is a bit more problematic from memory. I haven't played with Pages for a while though. The round tripping is why I was thinking of apps which actually sync with dropbox. Sorry, just reread my prior post - it was poorly worded, I didn't mean you couldn't edit them at all, I was meaning in the dropbox context. Pages allows a few ways of sharing documents but I don't remember any way of being able to use the 'open in' action menu to put an edited copy back into dropbox. iCloud is a different story though. Re: The new Fleksy.
Totally agree. The addition of direct touch was very welcome. The lack of it confused me when the app as was released. I guess they couldn't wait for all features before getting the app out. Also, I worked out an issue I was having with the app. It seemed to me that voice over would do silent and the app would stop working..
