Re: Mail Problem

2018-03-14 Thread Diana & Graham Stevens
I am still struggling with this. I hoped someone would tell me if I should
delete Graham's account and reinstate (and how to do it) or else suggest how I
might get his SMTP server back online.

If I delete the account in Internet Accounts it warns it will remove its data
from Mail, does this include all his downloaded emails?

If I delete the account in Mail I am afraid it will not allow me to set up a
new account, that I may still get the sort of message I get when I try to edit
the SMTP settings "A SMTP account already exists. Only a single SMTP account is
allowed to be saved."

I've looked at the advice given on Apple's official Mail site but they don't
tell you what to do if you can't save the settings. Their Mail Settings Lookup
gives me the wrong information for the account, it thinks it is IMAP and has
different ports. Maybe this is the 'Ghost' account except that Mail Settings
Lookup gets the ports settings for my accounts wrong too, maybe it doesn't work
in Sierra.

Connection Doctor reports that his SMTP server is offline but the "Network
Diagnostics" is greyed out and nothing I select activates it.

I tried deleting the Preferences but it didn't delete the Server settings.

Postscript to my previous message:

I have got rid of the extra Internet Account. There was only one shared note, I
unshared it, deleted the account, re-shared and the extra account did not
reappear. It was redundant anyway as it is part of the iCloud Account.

It made no difference, Graham’s SMTP server is still offline. Should I delete
his account and reinstate?

The outgoing port is 587, I assume that Daniel chose this when he set up the

I just looked in the Internet Account Preferences and there is one for each of

Should I delete it?

 Hi John,

 A couple of questions first:
A] Is this since upgrading from OS X 10.11.6 to macOS Sierra 10.12? or
 updating macOS Sierra10.12 to 10.12.3?

the Shift key and hold it down until the gray Apple logo appears on the

Re: Mail problem

2017-02-08 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi John,

Would there be any chance you have a corrupted email message that could be
stopping Mail App from loading?
But, if you have the exact same email messages on both your computers - the Mac
mini & MacBook Pro and you are NOT experiencing any problem with Mail on the
MacBook Pro, I would not think so.

The only way you can reinstall Mail.app is to Reinstall macOS.

You can do this without affecting your files and settings.
But as always I recommend having a current bootable backup and/or Time Machine
backup!

For this to work in macOS Recovery, you must be connected to the Internet.

1. Boot into macOS Recovery Partition

Hold down Command-R at startup until the Apple logo appears to see emergency
mode.
macOS Recovery gives you four choices:

2. Select “Reinstall macOS”

Click the Wi-Fi icon at the top right of the screen and choose a network.
Enter the network’s password, if necessary.

The Sierra installer data—roughly 5 GB downloads over the Internet from Apple’s

Be prepared for the download to take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours,
depending on your connection; installation will then take another 15 to 30
minutes.

During installation your Mac will restart a few times, sometimes you won’t hear

Perform Post-installation Tasks:
A) Respond to Immediate Questions
Among the most common questions are requests for your user account password or
Apple ID password. For example, certain apps may once again need an
administrator’s authorization to make changes to your data, and various apps
that use your Apple ID (including iTunes and iBooks) may need you to sign in
again.

Check System Preferences > iCloud to make sure you’re signed in to iCloud (and
with the correct Apple ID). Do the same in iTunes (Account > View My Account)
and the App Store (Store > View My Account).
NOTE:  Make sure “iCloud Drive” in NOT activated! (unless you wish to use it;
you can set it up at a later date if needed).

Let us know how you get on please.

Hi John,

A couple of questions first:
A] Is this since upgrading from OS X 10.11.6 to macOS Sierra 10.12? or updating
macOS Sierra10.12 to 10.12.3?
B] Do you receive any error message as to why Mail quit?
C] Have you tried Restarting your MacBook Pro after Mail Quits, then launch
Mail right after you restart?

I would first suggest you “Try A Safe Boot”

To perform a safe boot, follow these steps:
1. Start or Restart your Mac.
2. Hold the Shift key immediately when you hear the startup chime, press the
Shift key and hold it down until the gray Apple logo appears on the screen.
3. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo

Your Mac will complete the startup process, which will take considerably longer
than usual.
You’ll eventually see the words “Safe Boot” on the screen—possibly within the
login window, depending on which version of macOS you’re running.

4. Open Mail.app as soon as startup process completes.

If rebooting in safe mode solves the problem, you know that some system level
process is at fault or that one of the caches disabled by safe mode was
corrupted.

5. Restart normally and see if the problem is gone.

Ronni

Re: Mail problem

2015-07-17 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Bill,

If you are able to Receive Mail but Unable to send mail, the problem is with
the Outgoing Mail Server SMTP.

The most likely reason is one of the following:
* You have the wrong SMTP server selected
*You have the incorrect settings for the right SMTP server
*Your ISP is blocking the port Mail wants to use
*The SMTP server doesn't respond quickly enough

You mention your ISP is Bigpond, so do you have the correct Bigpond Outgoing
Mail Server (SMTP) Settings entered.
 1. Go to Mail Preferences Accounts - select an Account, and click Account
Information.
2. In Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu near the bottom, verify that the
server selected is the one matching your incoming account, and that 'Use Only
This Server' is checked. If the server appears to be correct but you're still
getting errors when sending email, proceed with...
3. From the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu, choose Edit SMTP Server
List.
4. In the list at the top, make sure the SMTP server that was selected for the
account is still selected, and click the (-) minus button to remove it
(confirming the deletion if prompted to do so).
5. Click the (+) button to add a new SMTP server. Fill in the Account
Information and Advanced views with the information you got from your email
provider.
6. Click OK
Now choose Window Connection Doctor, and wait for it to complete its checks.
Next to the SMTP server you just modified, if you see a green dot (on the left)
and the text (on the right) Connection and login to server succeeded, the
change worked.

If not, you must have incorrect settings:
Your SMTP server requires several settings to be exactly correct:
Your email address, username, and password; the server's address; the port; the
authentication method; and the SSL setting (On or Off).
If any of these is wrong, you won't be able to send mail.

If you require more help - Post back with all the details you have entered for
the email account.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Mail problem

2015-07-17 Thread Bill Parker

Thansk Ronni,

I was beginning to get to issue from the instructions below. However, an
hour with iinet/westnet earlier today suggested all was well with all
accounts when they ran tests and looked all my account details.

So given that I have just gone back in the reviewed everything. All
“outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) entries were all showing online. Then…
one of my queued non-sending test emails popped up and immediately the
entry showed “off line”. All three accounts are now showing offline.
Connection doctor shows all good.

So here are the details for one email:
ren...@westnet.com.au

Description renew3
ren...@westnet.com.au ( a few re-routed addresses using that email)

Fill Name Bill Parker

User Name as email

password ( its correct from the Westnet support this am)

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) BIGP (offline showing)

Use only this server unchecked

TLS Cert Non.

Now I cannot even receive emails!! So I am using Thunderbird

I have an old version of Mail, but if yours is similar to mine, look at the

In general being offline implies no internet connection, but since Thunderbird

 6. I have to send this from my iBook because I can't receive or send emails
 now.

that after 4 5 Rick could now launch Mail, but not able to send or receive.
So I suggested then that he go to Mail File Preferences Select the
Account, select the Advanced Tap, check Remove copy from server after
retrieving a message:, and select “Remove Now”.
So there would be nothing on the Server, then he could manually delete the
duplicates and hopefully the problem would be solved ;-)

Hi Robert,

You said you were using Apple Mail in OS 10.6.8 iMac 27 3.2 Ghz Intel Core i3

I’m not a mind reader ;-)

Show User ~/Library in OS X Lion
Launch Terminal from Spotlight or Launchpad - Utilities, and enter the
following command to show or hide the directory:

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

The users Library folder will immediately become visible again.
OR, even easier:
Just press and hold the “option/alt” key, and you can choose
“Go to Library” in the Go menu of the Finder.

You now have instructions how to find ~/Library - Mail Folder in both Lion

But why do you even need to do this now? as you mentioned earlier that Hi Ronda!

Re: Mail Problem - Huge

2011-09-08 Thread Rick Armstrong
Thanks all, my problem is fixed now, I still don't why the triplicate
emails but may be attributable to

1. Not enough useable Hard Disk space.
2. Using Mail as an archive for ALL emails AND attachments.
3. With all the triplicate emails - this filled up the little
available space on hard drive and then Mail could do anything because
it was overloaded.
4. SOLUTION: One WD 2Tb External Drive from OfficeWorks ($98) then I
was able to follow through with the advice from the group easily.

Thanks, Rick.

Re: Mail Problem - Huge

2011-09-08 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Robert,

In Snow Leopard the User Library is NOT hidden, you don’t use Terminal to show
Library in Snow Leopard! It is shown in Snow Leopard.
The User Library in Snow Leopard is located on your Macintosh HD Users Folder
 your Username Library.

What operating system ARE you using Apple Mail in? In Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
OR Lion OS X 10.7?
You have me completely confused ….

I will be heading out to see a client soon, and then I will be away for the
week-end. I might not be able to get back to you until Monday if you require
anymore help.

Cheers,
Ronni

The hard drive is getting full and I have tried to clear some space but
perhaps it is not enough to enable Mail to rebuild.
(My quick solution is to go to Officeworks this morning and get an external
to clear a lot more space on the hard drive OR if the group can suggest
somewhere else to get an external quickly, I have to do this anyway because
the drive is getting towards capacity)

Hi Rick,

Is this a POP Account and are you leaving Mail on The Server?
If it is and you are leaving mail on the server, go to Mail File
Preferences Select the Account, select the Advanced Tap, check Remove copy
from server after retrieving a message:, and select “Remove Now”.
That will leave nothing on the mail server if you are comfortable with that.
Then, manually delete any additional messages that may be taking up extra space.

You can then remove as much as possible from your Hard Drive until you have
enough Free Space on it.
Sounds like your Mail might require some clearing out and your Hard Drive.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Rick. This is just an idea to show you what files may be taking up
the space; If you go 'USERS - HOME - LIBRARY - MAIL - YOUR MAIL
ACCOUNT - INBOX.mbox - MESSAGES. Then view in LIST VIEW, then click
SIZE you can see all your attachments from the largest to the smallest
and delete if needed. Do the same with SENT messages, plus other
accounts you may have.

Hope this helps

Hi Rick,

If you still cannot open Mail for it crashing, you may be able to remove all
the mail on the server by logging in via webmail and clearing everything there.
At least then poor Mail is not trying to download 931 messages again
immediately on opening.

Hi Tim,

What I mentioned above should remove all messages from the Mail Server, why
would Rick need to login to webmail also?

Rick, also check In Mail, open ‘Get Account Info' window by choosing it from
the Action menu (gear icon) located below the Mailbox list in the main Mail

Do the messages that Mail keeps downloading repeatedly appear there?
If they are, select them and choose ‘Remove From Server’.

Hi Robert,

What have you tried to correct the problem of duplicate emails?
Have you checked that the messages ARE being cleared from the Server?
Check In Mail, open ‘Get Account Info' window by choosing it from the Action
menu (gear icon) located below the Mailbox list in the main Mail window.
Do the messages that Mail keeps downloading repeatedly appear there?
If they are, select them and choose ‘Remove From Server’.

If you have Rules set to move WAMUG messages into a Mailbox named WAMUG?
If so, have you tried selecting the WAMUG Mailbox, then go to Mailbox (Menu)
Rebuild?

If that doesn’t solve the problem, quit Mail, navigate to ~/Library/Mail and
drag the file Envelope Index to the Trash.
When you launch Mail again, it’ll tell you that you need to “reimport” all your
messages.
Let it do so—it’s recreating your envelope index from scratch, but don’t worry,
you won’t lose any data, such as labels or message status and when it finishes,
your mailboxes should behave correctly.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Andrew,

Verify you have the correct password set in Keychain, then close mail and go
for a 10-15 minute coffee break.

After the break open mail and run the connection doctor under the Window
menu. This will either succeed or provide you a useful error message.

The idea of the coffee break is the following.

Some email servers don't like to be polled to often and lock the account for a
brief period. I have seen this especially with yahoo account.

Have fun

Re: Mail problem

2010-09-14 Thread David Nicholas
My mail problem is now fixed. The iinet support system worked very well. I
haven't had to use support for a few years now - that's a plus for iinet, isn't
it. This morning I got straight through to someone in Sydney - I haven't had
such an instant response since my first years with iinet back in the late 90s.
I had to reinstall my Mail and then it worked. The problem was irritating.
The solution was very reassuring.

Re: Mail problem

2010-09-14 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the troubles people have been
experiencing - perhaps all ISPs are performing modem firmware upgrades.

I got this from Optus this morning ..

Optus is introducing the capability to upgrade the firmware in your
DSL Direct modem remotely.

What is firmware?

Optus is introducing the capability to upgrade the firmware in your
DSL Direct modem remotely.

What is firmware?

Firmware is the programme that makes your modem function and
communicate between the Optus network and your computer. Modem
manufacturers only release updated firmware as improvements and
changes are needed. Updates are intended to improve the way modems
communicate with our network, so it's key that you are using the most
up to date firmware to maximise your modem's performance on our network.

This capability will allow Optus to improve the stability, security
and performance of your modem by installing the latest firmware from
your modem manufacturer directly to your modem.

The most common scenario where firmware would be upgraded is to
address newly discovered security flaws or defects.

When Optus performs a remote upgrade you probably won't be aware of
it. Your service will be interrupted for a few minutes, however we'll
schedule upgrades at a time to minimise impact to your use of the
Optus Broadband service.

If your modem uses the settings specified and recommended by Optus
these will be restored after any upgrade. If you have custom settings
in your modem these may be overwritten and you will need to restore
them yourself.

Optus strongly recommends you take advantage of this great new
capability. To participate you don't have to do anything. However, if
you don't wish to participate in remote firmware updates you can opt-
out here.

If you do choose to opt out Optus technical support will of course
continue to offer the same customer focused support of your service
and modem.

Regards,

The Optus team

Cheers

Re: Mail problem

2009-12-09 Thread Ronda Brown
Hello John,

Your exact problems have not been covered before that I know of.
In regard to loosing your RSS Apple Hot News, have you tried going to - File
Add RSS Feeds selecting it?

When you mention The spinning activity wheel do you mean the Spinning Beach
Ball (which happens when Mail Hangs) or the Activity Bar that appears under
Mail Activity when mail is sending or receiving?

Re: Your corrupted email addresses. When you see this happen, you could quit
and relaunch Mail application.
You will likely find some files with the word unknown in the filename if you
look in your ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ folder.
This means that the database was rebuilt automatically, and the application
unfortunately needs to relaunch to correctly read the new data.

Without knowing more of the way you upgraded to Snow Leopard and imported your
email, I cannot give you anything more on why you are experiencing these
problems.

I also notice you have not updated to OS X 10.6.2 which updates Mail to version
4.2 (1077)
I think I would download and install the OS X 10.6.2 Combo Update.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062updatecombo.html

After installing it ... Repair Permissions!

This might repair the corruptions you are experiencing. Post back any results
you have please.

Mail (Ver 4.1) has for some reason stopped recording the RSS Apple Hot news

the RSS Mailbox has also disappeared from the top of the Mailbox list. I
have checked through the preferences and can find no reference to the
 problems.
Another problem is, occasionally, addresses become corrupted, not all the
time but mainly when calling in a Group to send to.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can send ok from this account?
The settings for this account are exactly the same as the other

If you are completely sure every setting in the 'bad' account is the

I take it the account is a POP account.

Mail may be exceeding a limit on the number of simultaneous
connections set by your mail server.
This occurs most often when you check your email using more than one
client, or on more than one machine at a time—though under some
circumstances, Mail may attempt to open a second connection to a mail
server before closing an earlier one.

IMAP supports multiple simultaneous connections, whereas POP does not.

Sorry I can't come up with any other suggestion at the moment.

Hi Michael, I find this sometimes with email accounts. I have email
accounts set to download and keep a copy on the server at the same
time. With POP accounts that means it is safe to delete that account
on a particular machine where it is not working, without deleting all
my past emails. I find that if you set up the account as a brand new
one it will usually work. It appears to be a bug within Mail rather
than iinet. Something about the set up seems to get corrupted on a
particular machine.

But I stress, this can only be safe with POP accounts with Mail set to
leave a copy on the remote server when downloading. I do this so I can
have the same emails on separate machines - similar to an IMAP account.

cheers, Susan.

I suggest you change the password for the problematic email account at the ISP

Re: Mail problem

2009-10-07 Thread Michael Kane Taylor

Many thanks Susan, David and Ronni for your suggestions.

It is definitely not an iiNet problem. Nor does it concern settings
which have been checked, double-checked and re-checked.
I did indeed try removing the account and adding it again as a new
account. Not only did this not work but I was then faced with the
interesting learning curve of converting .emix files and resetting
all the massages up to September 18.

I remain mightily puzzled.

Hi all. I have a mystifying problem with Mail 2.1.3 on my G5

I have five email accounts. One of them (namely
 ta...@iinet.net.au) has
not been receiving mail since September 18. The other accounts,
 with the
same ISP work perfectly well. On my laptop (Leopard) and on my
 iPod, all
accounts, including the recalcitrant one, operate with no problems

I have tried every work-around that I can think of, with no
 success. The
 settings are correct.

I am contemplating the irrevocable step of going back to late
 August via
SuperDuper in the (perhaps forlorn) hope that this will work.

Does any one have any ideas?

 Hi Michael,

Only this one account is not receiving mail, from the same ISP as
 others
that are working perfectly on the G5?
You can send ok from this account?
The settings for this account are exactly the same as the other
 accounts?
You have checked the correct Port SSL is selected?
When you click on Get Mail for this account, what happens ... do
 you
 receive a message?
To see what is happening when you click Get Mail choose Window
 Activity
 Viewer (Command-0 [zero])

If you are completely sure every setting in the 'bad' account is
 the same as
the other 'good' accounts with the same ISP, the only thing I can
 think
'might' be happening, only I cannot see it happening to the same
 account
 each time :-(
I take it the account is a POP account.

Mail may be exceeding a limit on the number of simultaneous
 connections set
 by your mail server.
This occurs most often when you check your email using more than
 one client,
or on more than one machine at a time—though under some
 circumstances, Mail
may attempt to open a second connection to a mail server before
 closing an
 earlier one.
IMAP supports multiple simultaneous connections, whereas POP does
 not.

Now things are getting really weird. This has always been a POP

see what happened I opened a new account with the same address and
set it as an IMAP account. I now have all the missing messages and it

Hi Adrian,

Pleased to hear you have Mail working again. Did you uninstall
Safari 4 using the Safari4.0BetaUninstall.pkg?

That would have got rid of everything relating to Safari 4Beta.

I have not had any problems with using Safari 4. It's loads webpages
heaps faster than Safari 3 and no problem with Mail.

The problem seems to be with current Growl extensions not being
compatible with Safari 4's new WebKit rendering engine for reading
HTML mail.

If you have Growl, remove them.
The places to look for the extensions are:

1. /Users/User/Library/Mail/Bundles
and
2. /Library/Mail/Bundles

There should be a folder called GrowlMail.mailbundle
Removing it should allow Mail to re-launch successfully.

Hi Severin,

Without knowing what version of Mail I would suggest as a first step,
try using the Rebuild Mailbox function on the account's Inbox mailbox.
All messages in the account's Inbox mailbox will disappear
temporarily and the mailbox will be resynchronized with the server.
Depending on how many messages are available in the account's Inbox
mailbox and the number and size of message attachments, this can take
a little time for the re-sync process to be 100% complete.

Another thing, the Mail Account's Server could have been down.

Hi Severin,

I don't use mail myself - but I gave it a quick fire up to see if I
understood the problem.

One thing I noticed is unlike Entourage where:

when you drag the divider to change the relative size of the message
list/mail view windows it stops before you reach the bottom of the enclosing
window - so the message window never disappears

With mail you can, in fact, drag the divider right to the bottom so that
there is only one window visible (the message list) - so the first thing to
check is that the window is, in fact, divided into two halves - if not (ie
there is a double line with a dot in it at the bottom of the window) then
just drag the divider (looking like the bottom border) back up again to
reveal the mail view window.

Other than that, there doesn't seem to be the options in preferences to
select or deselect this option so I wouldn't know!

I hope the above makes some sense!!

Hope that helps

Cheers

Tony,

Your problem might be a file privilages problem which can be ifxed

if somehow your mail.plist file is corrupt you may want to try
Preferential treatment (http://homepage.mac.com/jonn8/as/html/

preference files and can get corrupted. As they are xml based this

I don't know what happened in your case, but have a careful look at the

this, and you'll find that it is actually the divider line, which will

also just drag it back into position. Double click it again and it will
