I guess while staying home most of the time, watching TAGS more, my sense
of catching odd things on the show is heightened. Today, while Barney was
on the phone making date plans with Thelma Lou, he said she would not have
time to change her clothes after work. That she would have to wear her
uniform - 'you wear your uniform and I'll wear my uniform'. This was shown
in 1964. What jobs would require a woman to wear a uniform beside waitress
and nurse, at that time? I'm not old enough to have noticed anything else.

No Huntin', No Trespassin'...

2015-03-17 Thread Lisa Jackson

In response to Paul's hunting question, I submit this: Someone and Dixie Belle
Edwards (I think) went bear hunting (at the Great Dismal Swamp I think).
Sounds like a joyfully terrific place to vacation.
Didn't Andy say something to Barney about shooting some rats at the dump? Does
that qualify as hunting? I know that's not an animal that they would fix to
eat or that has a hunting season, so it might not count.
Andy talked about shooting crows with Thelmer Lou's cousin. (Again, not really
an animal with a hunting season as far as I know.)
I'm not home to look at any episodes so I'm going off of my very faulty memory
and that's all I have right now.

Opie's Job

2015-02-21 Thread Lisa Jackson

Why did Opie say he wanted to play baseball to get fired from his
grocery-delivery job? Why not just say he needed more time for homework and
his Pa told him to quit?

I think about that every time I see that episode. But why wasn't he just
honest with Mr. Doakes? He could just say, I really appreciate you giving
me the job, but I found out that Billy needs the job to help provide for his
family, so I'd like to bow out and give the job to him. I would think Mr.
Doakes would admire Opie for that.

 Thelma Lou
 (Janet)

I think he lied to spare his friend's feelings so he would not be embarrassed
about his situation, and maybe out of modesty so that no one would know why
he was doing what he did.

Percussion Instruments

Percussion instruments in Mayberry: Barney's cymbals, one of Bobby Fleet's guys
played the drumsticks on the cell bars when Jim Lindsay was playing for them
(idk if that counts, but I tried), there were drums in the class reunion
episode (at least one of them), someone played a drum in the episode when the
guys in the band wanted to go to the Raleigh, Ernest T played the gas can when
he serenaded Charlene, and not sure of this, but wasn't there a drummer when
Opie was in the band? I had another one but I can't remember, and I'm doing
this off the top of my head.

Shirtless/Wearing Shorts
Andy and Opie were forced to wear that sissy outfit that Aunt Bee got them
for their Hollywood trip. (I wasn't being ugly - Opie called them sissy,
didn't he?)
Did Andy wear swim trunks in the episode with the lady lawyer? Or was it just
talked about?
Did Howard wear shorts when he was on the island? Or did he just roll up his
slacks?
Andy had his underwear and a tshirt on in one episode (maybe more than one).
Was it when they were keeping the baby? I remember that he went out in the
hallway and Aunt Bee turned her head and said Andy!.
These may not be correct - I'm going off of my (often faulty) memory.

Different Characters, same actor

2015-01-20 Thread Lisa Jackson

Today while watching Cheyenne on The Westerns Channel, I spotted Forrest
Lewis. Forrest Lewis played, among others, Cy Hudgins, who brings the
 loaded goat into town.

I got to noticing that Forrest Lewis made 6 appearances on TAGS, and he had 5
different names. The time Ellie ran for city council, he was shown but not
given a name. That got me to wondering.I know several people appeared
on TAGS under different names, like Jack Dodson appearing as 2 different
people. But Forrest Lewis appearing as 5 different named individuals must
be close to the record.Does anyone know of any other individual who
appeared on TAGS that had more than 5 different names?

***I
know that the guy who was Sam Plumber was on several episodes as different
people - a farmer, a sergeant, etc. Is that the right name? The guy who worked
cleaning the market? He was Sam on the Brady Bunch? Anyway, I am not sure how
many episodes he was on, but it was several and he was someone different each
time.

Taking pictures

2014-12-17 Thread Lisa Jackson
Andy got his picture taken with Darlene Mason in her dressing room
(scandalous!!)
Everyone wanted their pictures taken with the bellhop in Hollywood
There was a picture taken of Aunt Bee's rose (taken by Andy?)
Barney kept changing his mind about getting his picture taken for the newspaper
when he came home for the family reunion
The ladies took pictures in Mexico (not entirely certain that they showed them
taking the pics, but they looked at them at the end of the show when they
picked them up in the drugstore)
Helen took pictures at the baseball game and took the picture of Opie's foot
being safe (then tore it up to spare Andy from finding out)
Also in Hollywood, I think Andy took pics of Opie holding the newspaper of a
famous actor (whose name escapes me at the moment)

RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 343

2013-12-03 Thread Lisa Jackson

Yesterday's advertising message got me to thinking about Mayberry shopping
opportunities with no more racks, especially Bert Miller. Absolutely no
better customer service or return policy. Of course, when he got rid of
the ringin doorbells, I guess he gained some racks. .Aside from Bert, and
Barney's foray into vacuum cleaner sales, were there any other mentions of
 door to door sales?

Well, Opie and the other boys went door to door with the Miracle Salve -
temporarily and unsuccessfully. Of course, it seems like all they ever got out
of their mouths was Ma'am (or Sir) would you like to buy some - and then the
door would slam!!! But at the end of the episode, didn't Barney and Gomer have
to go try to get rid of that huge shipment they had received at Andy's house?
I think we just saw them going out the door calling out Salve! (if memory
serves correctly). And Opie and Howie (or was it Arnold?) tried to sell their
newspapers (which was not a success) and caused a tremendous stir when they
gave everyone the edition with all the gossip in it.
BONUS: This is of course not door-to-door sales, but didn't Opie and Arnold
go door to door to try to find a good home for the baby they found? They had
good intentions and were trying to help but I think a few people were shocked -
Miss Crump for one!! :)
(My response isn't completely on-target, but these are the things I thought of
while answering.)

other one. By chance was it Opie talking about a free ice cream from Miss
Ellie? I'm not sure he said free. He said it was give to me I believe.

Gomer saved AGAIN!!

2011-07-19 Thread Lisa Jackson

Well, I was watching my Gomer dvds again today and had a deja vu moment. One
of the episodes was about Sgt. Carter saving Gomer's life and Gomer driving him
crazy doing things for him! Even more than this, they used the EXACT same
scenario that Andy used on the TAGS episode on this same topic. Carter turned
on the gas and pretended to be passed out, Gomer came to get him out, but then
passed out before he could save Carter and Carter had to convince Gomer that he
saved him. Seemed REALLY familiar for some reason!! : ) The ending was
somewhat different, but it was kind of funny to see an episode with such a
close similarity to the one on TAGS.

Just watched an episode of Gomer Pyle where Sgt. Carter's lady friend had a
friend in town and he needed a date for her or his girl wouldn't let him come
over for his date. Who do you think he got? GOMER PYLE!! Gomer didn't want
to go and Sarge's lady friend didn't want Gomer to go out w/ her friend. AND
guess who the girl was??? Just guess!! It was none other than Charlene
Darling Wash, I mean Maggie Peterson!! They both were under the impression
that the other one was a society person, so they were uncomfortable at first.
But of course, things worked out just fine. Great episode...wonder where they
got the idea for taking Gomer on a blind double date??? I kept expecting to

O Sole Mio was on the episode when the Italian family came to Mayberry to live
w/ Sam Jones. This is one of the color episodes. Sam was expecting ONE guy
and he brought his dad and sister w/ him. The Mayberry folks welcomed them w/
what they thought was the Italian national anthem...O Sole Mio. Oh, well,
their hearts were in the right place! : )

So I don't recall hearing O Sole Mio on any TAGS episodes.maybe I missed

various solos/trios..Santa Lucia. Is that it?
 Please advise.

Italian National Anthem

2011-05-21 Thread Lisa Jackson

Il Canto degli Italiani (The Song of the Italians) is the Italian national
anthem. It is best known among Italians as Inno di Mameli (Mameli's Hymn) or
Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy). The words were written by Goffredo
Mameli, and two months later, they were set to music by Michele Navarro. After
unification (1861) the adopted national anthem was the Marcia Reale, the Royal
March (or Fanfara Reale), official hymn of the royal house of Savoy composed in
1831 to order of Carlo Alberto di Savoia. The Marcia Reale remained the Italian
national anthem until the Italy became a republic in 1946. In 1946 Italy
became a republic, and on October 12, 1946, Il Canto degli Italiani was
provisionally chosen as the country's new national anthem. This choice was made
official in law only on November 17, 2005, almost 60 years later. So I guess
the Mayberrians should've sung either the Il Canto... or the Royal March, but
the Il Canto wasn't official until 6 years ago!!! : )

Don/Barney/Ralph

2011-04-29 Thread Lisa Jackson

I have been reading the whole Don Knotts thread and how he is better known (to
some) as Ralph Furley and better known (at least to all of us on the digest) to
others as Barney Fife. One of the classes in my school has had a learn about
your state unit lately, and of course, Don Knotts was a West Virginian! So
this particular class did posters about our state and one of the students had
on his/her poster several famous ppl. from WV. One of the famous people listed
was Don Knotts, which I was surprised and pleased to see on the poster. But in
light of the recent discussion here on the digest, I was really surprised and
pleased to see what followed his name on the poster. It said something like,
Best known as Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show! That was so awesome to
see, especially with our recent topic here, and it made me happy to see that
someone in the world agrees that Mr. Knotts is best known as our dearly loved
deputy sheriff Barney Fife!! : ) (It was especially great to see it since the
class that did these posters are only 5-6 years old!)

RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 12, Issue 108

2011-04-13 Thread Lisa Jackson

Just to set the record straight - when using the word, the proper spelling is
PREY as in what wild animals do for food. In other words, the thought is a
bother and you want to get to the bottom of the issue. When Opie used it, he
was referring to the fact that he did not want to have to work to earn his
allowance so the idea of having money just handed to him was a grand thought. I
know I make a big deal out of the proper spelling of Aunt Bee and usually
either Paul or someone else corrects others as well but I see this particular
mistake often. It's common to think you would use the word PRAY but unless
you're speaking to the Almighty, the word is PREY.

Another way to look at it is - PRAY is a verb and PREY is a noun.

Harriet, the chicken thief, in Kelsey's Woods USA

Harriet, I agree w/ you on most things about your post. You're right - it
should be prey instead of pray in this quote. I also agree that the word
prey is a noun, as in The lion pounced on his prey. However, in the TAGS
quote, preying on my mind, the word preying is not a noun - it is a verb.
(I am sending this in the nicest, kindest Mayberry spirit and I hope that it is
accepted as such and that it doesn't cause any offense or hurt feelings.) : )

My Hometown and Thelma Lou's last name

2010-12-08 Thread Lisa Jackson

I currently live in the small town where I grew up. I left for college, which
was about two hours away, so it wasn't hard to visit home on the weekends.
Also, for several years I lived in another small town, but that was only 30
min. away. So I feel like I never really left home. And that's okay w/ me. I
have my family here, and that's the most important thing.

OK - so, Thelma Lou's last name...isn't it Lou??? ; ) Just kidding - I don't
think it was ever mentioned on the show, until, like someone pointed out, it
was mentioned when she came in for the class reunion and her married name was
mentioned. But while she lived in Mayberry, I don't think we ever knew her
married name, nor where she worked. Curious, curious...

this and that and different things

2010-11-25 Thread Lisa Jackson

Dear Friends -

I have a few odds and ends to share w/ everyone...

First, Happy Thanksgiving to all in Mayberry!!

I wanted to tell everyone that I have been on a little vaca w/ a friend of
mine. We went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and visited a few sites
there. Of course, both of us being TAGS fans, we went to Manteo to look around
and we visited the theater where they perform the Lost Colony play each summer.
This is where our own beloved Andy got his professional acting start
(according to the theater and internet stories)! It is also close to where
Andy lives currently. It was an awesome trip and we had a great time. It is a
lovely area and I can see why Andy would fall in love w/ the area and want to
live there! We also went to the Wright Bros. memorial in Kill Devil Hills,
Bodie's Island (pronounced body's, not bow-dees) and Currituck lighthouses, NC
Aquarium on Roanoke Island, and the Elizabethan Gardens (also on Roanoke
Island). I highly recommend a stay in the Outer Banks area - there are many
fun things to do - if you go during the season (late spring/summer/early fall)
you can also go on a dolphin watch and go to see the wild horses. HEY, there's
also a YMCA nearby, but we splurged and stayed in a hotel instead of getting
the corner room at the Y. ; )

I missed out on answering the questions before, so I will answer them now...

As to which character I would be, I think that's a hard one, but maybe Miss
Ellie, except I wouldn't disappear from Mayberry - I would stay and enjoy life
in that small but wonderful town!

And what crime would I do that would get me an arrest? H - another
difficult one - I would probably get in trouble for jaywalking (or maybe
playing bingo). I doubt I would get in trouble for partaking in Col. Harvey's
elixir, but you never really know, do you??? ; )

OK - that's it for now...I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving - we're
having our official family dinner tomorrow, so I'm still looking forward to our
dinner, but today was a nice day and I hope all my Mayberry friends had a great
day, too!

about the crime you did hunting nightcrawlers after dark. I might have to
think about this type of behavior. I would've never ever thought about

While I don't claim to be a Trained Noticer I did catch something interesting
the other day. Our local TV station was showing the episode where Parnell
Riggsbee lost a change purse with $50.00 in it and Opie found it and turned
it in to Andy. Andy looked at the clock and told him that if nobody claimed
it by a certain number of days it would be his on that day at 3:05 P.M. When
the big day came they counted down the time and gave Opie the money at 3:00
P.M. and not 3:05. Has anyone else ever noticed this. I didn't double check
the episode on the DVD but I think I'm correct. Bob

Andy says 3:05 at first, then Barney tells Andy that Opie has already been
there for 5 minutes. Thus, Andy takes 5 min. off the time and Opie gets the
money at 3:00 instead of 3:05. : )

Piccadilly Circus was somewhere in a different county in Ireland. I guess he

It seems to me that in the first episode, Aunt Bee says something about raising

I actually have some coloring pages related to TAGS on a flashdrive somewhere.
I downloaded them from a website but I don't know which one and I don't even
know who did them. If anyone knows where, the person requesting them could
maybe find them. If I knew for sure that it was ok to send them by email (w/o

clothes in Mayberry

2009-07-08 Thread lisa jackson
This has probably been mentioned before, but I wondered about the mayor
wearing a tie to go fishing on The Bed Jacket episode. Isn't that a tad bit
too formal for the fishin' hole? (Or maybe those fish are voters - who
knows? We don't know how Old Sam would vote - how he votes is his
business - not ours!!) I mean, Sarah Palin wore waders on her latest round
of interviews, so the mayor wouldn't necessarily HAVE to wear a tie to go
fishing.

Before I get in trouble for talking about politics on the list, let me say
that I am not making any political statements or even any criticisms on the
Governor's choice of wardrobe. I was merely making a comparison about what
people were wearing to go fishing. I hope I haven't opened up a can of
worms that I wish I could close back up again. Unlike Andy and Peggy, I
don't particularly like worms - even if they like me!!

barefoot in Mayberry town

2009-05-23 Thread lisa jackson

Who has been barefoot in Mayberry?

What about the time that Andy, Barney, Thelmer Lou and u, was it
Peggy(?) went wading at the creek or the duck pond or somewheres? They were
barefoot - remember - Barney didn't want to take his shoes off but Andy said
it was okay b/c both the girls had brothers.

OH - let me tell you about my Mayberry moment this week at school. I was
walking into a class this week and just as I got to the door, the teacher
asked the kids, What is 25 and 25? I had to refrain from doing a little
Ernest T. dance and hollering out 50!. And I mean I BARELY refrained from
it!! I told my dad about it and he was hoping the whole time I was telling
it that I didn't do my Ernest T. impression. I don't know what's wrong w/
my dad. Most parents would be proud to have a daughter who knows about
Ernest T. And I don't know about that teacher's upbringing, either. She
didn't have the foggiest notion of what I was talking about when I tried to
tell her about why 25 and 25 is funny. AND she admitted to NOT watching

Aunt Pittypat's house

The Old Remshaw Place was previously Mayor Stoner's house. The house was

Barney has nothing on this guy

2009-02-28 Thread lisa jackson
I don't know if anyone has read this story, but there is a story on the 'net
about a sheriff in Elizabethton, TN, who is trying to serve a warrant that was
taken out 80 years ago! The warrant is for the arrest of a man who wrote a
check for $30. The check bounced and he owes for the amount of the check, $2
for the arrest fee and 50 cents each for the affidavit and warrant. Someone in
the Brunswick, GA sheriff's office found the warrant and mailed it to TN. The
guy in TN says he has a legal obligation to fill the warrant. Of course, no
one knows if the guy is still alive or if he is, where he lives. Sounds like

Hi Tom

2008-10-06 Thread lisa jackson
Tom -

I think that question was a serious question and I really don't think anyone
was making sport at all. I believe that most if not all of us are very
interested in hearing about the actors you have met and/or corresponded with
through the years. Many questions and comments have come through the list
about Mr. Schwamp's identity, and it is one of the major curiosities about
TAGS. We understand that it is labor intensive for you to type your emails
and we really do appreciate your effort to tell us about the actors you have
known. It is truly interesting to hear about people that I will never have
the chance to know because most are already gone, like Frances Bavier and
others. I just think someone was wondering if maybe you really did know who
Mr. Schwamp was since you have done so much research into so many actors and
their backgrounds.

With respect,

Lisa

whether poised as a serious question or whether im being made sport of,
 im
dead serious about my actors character and supporting characters. I was
hoping to see my long message that took alot out of me physically and

Now here is an interesting question for discussion. Since all of the

Well, finally I am able to answer a What's your favorite... question. I

funny, good lines and situations for the characters to find themselves in,

The episode where he wears a hat is in The Luck of Newton Monroe (season

The Darlins and funniest line

2008-08-03 Thread lisa jackson
Do you like the episode with The Darlings or not?

Well, I absolutely LOVE the Darlins (I know there's a g on the end, but I
say it w/o the g, so I will type it that way, too). They're just
hilarious! Their superstitious beliefs, the silent boys, and Charlene's
crush on Andy are too much! I love all of the episodes w/ them, and I wish
there were a few more episodes w/ them. I feel the same about Ernest T. and
Leon. They should've been on there more, but we have to treasure those few
episodes w/ them.

Another starter question: What is the funniest line in AG? (of all the
episodes)

I don't know if I could pick just one funniest line. There are so many
funny lines. I think my favorite moment, although I'm not sure you could
put it down to just one line, is when Ernest T. tried to join the army and
had his physical. I love it when he said Ah when he opened his mouth and
then asked what he should say for the ears. Of course, the medic told him
to hush and E.T. said HSHHH. Then the hearing test
was hilarious, too. I love that episode, but it's too hard to pick out just
one line for the absolute funniest of all episodes.

About the Jack N. autograph, my thought would be to get the book back if you

Those signatures may be easier to get than Jack's.

Who called Andy Andrew? I know the mayor did - not Pike- Stoner, Roy
Stoner, S-T-O-N-E-R. I believe that Howard's mom called Andy Andrew, and
h, the third one is tough. OK, was the other one Andy himself? He said
his name was Andrew Paul on the episode Floyd the Gay Deceiver when Opie
called him Pa (I don't know if that counts or not), or did that penpal

Fake Dads

2007-11-26 Thread lisa jackson
Well, I know that we once had Opie Taylor, Sr. running around during the
Miracle Salve scandal. Of course, that was Gomer P. acting like he was
Opie's dad. Then Floyd acted like he was the dad of Andy and Opie when he
was the writer of untrue pen pal letters. (That was one time that Andy
acted like he WASN'T Opie's dad!) Now, I can't really think of a third one,
but this might just barely count - when Gomer joined the Marines, Andy tried
to get Sgt. Carter to believe that Col. Pyle (or was it Gen. Pyle?) was
Gomer's dad. Now, Col. Pyle didn't appear on the show as far as I remember,
so he couldn't have masqueraded as Gomer's dad, and I'm not even sure that
was a TAGS episode, but I think it was. If there's another one, I can't
quite remember at this time. Well, I did my best, anyway... Lisa
