Do you know that you can request a photo of the grave on find-a-grave. If you
know for sure they are buried in a certain graveyard you can make a memorial
with the information you have. Then request a photo, I have done it with great
success.
Thanks Ed

blanks. Their listings are alphabetical and the book goes by location of the
grave and I have to go page by page to find them. I don't mind doing this

Ally, please don't scare people. This is not a Web site. Azores GenWeb is a
Web site. Ancestry and FamilySearch are Web sites (albeit dynamic Web sites).

This is a list serv. It has an email list which most people use. It also
has a forum or web board or archive where messages are stored and can be read
by anybody. Google searches can crawl the board/forum. I can remove messages
and I do. These are usually sent out in error (someone wanted to email Aunt
Ann and the Azores email addy pops up and it goes out to the whole list). I
also have the ability to delete the entire thing if I want to. So even the
 forum/board/archive may not stay forever.

Even when using the Internet Archive or Wayback Machine, I can't always get
pages to display. It doesn't work on dynamic webpages. I'm talking about
the static ones. And you have to have the URL from way back when as well.

I can't imagine that anyone on this list wouldn't want info about their
ancestors out there. I've had messages where people have had to hunt me down
(I used to have AOL) and I find a new cousin!

The purpose of this list is to help people research their genealogy and make
connections. As the list grows, I really have to adhere more and more to our
purpose. So don't be surprised when I ask for certain non-genealogy topics
to stop being posted. I used to say we average 10-15 messages a day. I just
ran the stats and we are averaging 14.73 messages a day. Only twice this
year did we have less than 400 messages that month. Guess I need to change
the group description to 15-20 messages a day. This is a lot of messages,
especially for those who are still in the work force. So the focus needs to
remain on genealogy. And with that many messages, you can see why a good
subject/topic in the email is needed entice as many people to read your email
 as you can.

Hope this clears up what a list-serv is and some of the things we do here.

My understanding is if you are the original person that took the picture you
have the copy right. I believe if you posted the photo first and it belongs to
you unless its someone else photo.
I know that they have a way that you can place a lable over the top of the
photo. I see it on photos for sale on e-bay all the time. But I don't know how
to do it. Maybe someone on the list know how.
You can view the photo but it has writing over the top so its worthless if you
try to make a copy of it.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help in finding record for Great grandmother Georgina Dias 1875 from Rabo de Peixe Sao Miguel

2013-03-04 Thread Edward Rodrigues
I was wondering if someone on the list could help me get to my Grandmothers
baptismo record. Her name is Georgina Dias born 6 Feb 1875 in Rabo de Peixe,
Sao Miguel, Azores. Her Father was Manuel Souza Dias 1841 and Mother was Maria
Julia Rapoza 1850. I wanted to try and translate the record myself
but I have been having a hard time trying to locate it. I have gone to Centro
De Conhecimento Dos Acores web site under the Pesquisa Registos Paroquiais I
have put Sao Miguel as the Ilha, Ponta Delgada as the Concelho, and Capelas,
Faja de Cima, Candelaria and the rest as the Freguesia. I have looked thru
the listing but found nothing so far. Don't know if I am doing it right. This
is my first attempt at this web site I have looked up portuguese records on the
Maderia web site with better luck. I feel if I could start by finding this
record I could get the rest of my family records on my own. My great
grandmother had two sisters
Capitalina 1868, and Maria 1870 along with two brothers Jose 1880 and August
1883 all from Rabo de Peixe, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel

 Hi Edward R,

Rabo de Peixe is in the council of Ribeira Grande. So when you are on the

 Ilha: Sao Miguel
 Concelho: Ribeira Grande
 Freguesia: Rabo de Peixe

You are doing it right. I looks like they are uploading alphabetically by
council. They don't announce what they are doing or when, so we have to
guess. So they will finish up whatever they are finishing and probably start
the council of Ribeira Grande next (most of my stuff is in the council of
 Vila Franca!)

So in the meantime, while you are waiting, feel free to help out anyone who
needs help with record translations here. It seems like most people are able
to pick out a little bit from the records (like the names). They usually
post what they need help with (those long handwritten dates of one thousand
eight hundred eighty and seven are what's hard for many).

Thanks to the terrific volunteer work of Mr. James Rego Nicolau of the San
Diego area, I have posted many new passenger ship lists on my website.

The great thing about these extractions is that he has a good recognition of
Portuguese names, unlike the extractions done by Ancestry.com and Ellis
 Island Foundation/LDS.

While the person can be located if you use these other resources as a guide
and are lucky enough that they didn't totally butcher the name of the person
you seek, it is overall much more likely that the extracted ships I have (now
am up to 78 ships) will quickly allow you to find them if they arrived on one
 of these extracted ships.

 Find them all here:

 http://www.dholmes.com/ships.html

And if you decide you want to add your name to the growing list of
volunteers, I can direct you to pick a ship or two for your own extraction.
Maybe you'll even get hooked like Mr. Nicolau. I think he's done maybe 40
ships now. There are many more he has extracted that I have not yet uploaded.

 Happy hunting.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for information if anyone know this Jose Pereira Lopes and Isabel Machado family

2013-06-21 Thread Edward Rodrigues
Does anyone know of this family
paternal grandmother's family immigrated from Pico to Massachusetts from about
1890 through 1905. I know the name of the ship on which my grandmother and her
parents traveled, the S.S. Cambroman, arriving on June 17, 1903. My
grandmother's sisters and brother arrived earlier on different ships.

paternal grandfather, Jose P. Lopes, arrived on a whaling ship. He jumped ship
in Newport News, VA and swam ashore in about 1897. Jose tracked down a brother
Joao Lopes who lived in CA but they had a falling out and Jose eventually
settled in Mass. My grandfather was the son of Luis Pereira Lopes and Maria
Candid do Rego, and was born on February 5, 1877 in the parish of Rosario in
the county of Lagoa on the island of St. Miguel. Maria Candid do Rego died and
Luis Pereira Lopes (d. 1927) remarried. His wife didn't want children from the
other marriage and so my grandfather was farmed out.

He had two brothers, Luiz and Joao, and a sister whose name we don't know. Joao
(used Lopes as a last name) immigrated to Isleton, CA and Luiz (Gaspar seems to
be his last name) traveled back and forth between the US and Acores but two of
his daughters moved to CA (used Perry as their last name). I know that my
grandfather's brother Luiz and one of his daughters (Alexandria?) arrived in CA
in 1910 but I am not sure of their route.

According to family history, grandfather's oldest brother, Luiz Pereira Gaspar
d. 1943 in Sao Miguel (brother of Jose P. Lopes) had the following offspring
who were born in Sao Migel:

Margaret Pereira (Lopes)--eventually settled in CA and had a daughter named
Louise
Gloria Pereira (Lopes)
Alexandria Pereira (Lopes)--I think she immigrated to CA
Maria do Carmo Pereira
Manuel Pereira Gaspar
Joao Pereira Gaspar
Jose Pereira Gaspar
Antonio Pereira Gaspar
Manuel Antonio Gaspar

I really don't know anything about Joao Lopes or his family who settled Isleton.

2013-10-18 Thread Edward Rodrigues
Cheri
The reason I asked is I have records for Luiz Pereira Lopes being married and
having four children with Maria Candida do Rego I have the documents confirming
these. One girl and three boys, the girls name was Elvira (born 1867) and
supposed to be the oldest and committed suicide. I am looking for her dead
record when I came across this record.
I know Luiz Pereira Lopes remarried after the death of Maria Candida do Rego.
Was wondering if maybe Maria de Jesus was this wife or if maybe Luiz was
married before Maria Candida do Rego.

I found what I believe is the baptism record for Maria de Trindade but my
Portuguese is at the beginners level. I would very much like to get in contact
with you and Hermano Pires to compare records and notes. I believe where I see
Luiz Pereira Lopes and his wife Maria Candida do Rego in the record dated 2
Sept 1861

Found it in Rosario baptism 1861 page 0021 but its very confusing and hard for
me to follow.
hope to hear more from you

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] need help with obit for Maria da Trindade

2013-10-18 Thread Edward Rodrigues
Hermano
I am confused because when I was looking at that record I did notice that they
where writing about the marriage of Luiz Pereira Lopes but not knowing
Portuguese I wasn't sure because it was under baptism records. I looked at the
record again and can see Maria Luiza. Now my question does she go by both name
Maria Luiza and Maria Candida do Rego? Also on their daughter Maria Trindade
obit in 1883 it has Luiz Pereira Lopes wife as Maria de Jesus . I just found
another record for a Maria born to Luiz Pereira Lopes and Maria Candida de Rego
4 June 1862. Could this be the Maria Trindade who died in 1883? I think I am
some how related from Francisco da Costa line that is why I am researching this
line. All the other information matches with what I have down.
Thanks for the help.
Edward

her dead record when I came across this record.
I know Luiz Pereira Lopes remarried after the death of Maria Candida do Rego.
Was wondering if maybe Maria de Jesus was this wife or if maybe Luiz was
married before Maria Candida do Rego.

 Edward et al,

I will be happy to hear the outcome of this thread as the Jose Pereira Lopes
born in February, 1877, son of Luiz Pereira Lopes and Maria Candida do Rego,
was my grandfather. Edward and I have conversed about this line and recently
I have received a massive amount of assistance from Manoel Ceasar in tracing
this line. Manoel's research showed that Maria Candida Do Rego was the
daughter of Candido Jacinto do Rego and Maria Botelho. aka Maria Candido
Coracao de Jesus. I will ask Manoel what he knows about the potential for two
 Luiz Pereira Lopes.

According to family history, my grandfather only spoke of siblings Luiz, Joao
and a sister that committed suicide when she couldn't marry the man she
loved. My grandfather was farmed out after his mother's death. Thus, Maria
Candida Do Rego died after 1877 and it is quite probable that she died after
 1883.

I would love to hear from anyone who has a connection to this family so that
I can add to our family tree. For those of you who are family connections and
possible family finder matches, my father, John Lopes has a gedcom in his
family finder results. We also have a private tree on ancestry.com which I
can send you an invitation to join.

Excited to hear from new relatives,

I am confused because when I was looking at that record I did notice that
they where writing about the marriage of Luiz Pereira Lopes but not knowing
Portuguese I wasn't sure because it was under baptism records. I looked at
the record again and can see Maria Luiza. Now my question does she go by both
name Maria Luiza and Maria Candida do Rego? Also on their daughter Maria
Trindade obit in 1883 it has Luiz Pereira Lopes wife as Maria de Jesus . I
just found another record for a Maria born to Luiz Pereira Lopes and Maria
Candida de Rego 4 June 1862. Could this be the Maria Trindade who died in
1883? I think I am some how related from Francisco da Costa line that is why
I am researching this line. All the other information matches with what I
 have down.
 Thanks for the help.

Subject: different names same person

A few weeks back someone mentioned how they do not combine a names of a person.
They display both way the name is presented separate. I believe they put
something
between the names. I am hoping someone could advise me the best way. example
Alexandrina Gaspar Pereira

Angelina Pereira Lopes
before I just put Angelina Alexandrina Gaspar Lopes Pereira

I thought I had saved the post but cannot find it now but would like to start
saving information that way to avoid confusion.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Returned DNA kit

2013-11-15 Thread Edward Rodrigues
Cheri
I have a distant cousin that was going to take the DNA test for me for my
research. I bought a family finder test and had it sent to him. I just received
a letter from him saying he had a change of heart
and return the unopened kit to family tree. Is their a way I could have the kit
sent to someone else to take the test ?
Thanks Ed

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Wondering

2013-12-01 Thread Edward Rodrigues
Pam
I did have a distant connection with a fifth cousin Still trying to make the
exact connection but we have narrow it down to the same Freguesia. What I find
interesting is I have met on line five different distant cousins because of it.
I also now know the different family members went different routes. This one
cousin family went to Mass
while some of the same family members went to Calif. As for my side they went
to the Hawaiian Islands. I am presently having another family member that
family went to Mass tested. Its been real interesting because of the match it
has forced me to look up more record from the Freguesia which has helped me in
my family records.
Hope that answer your question.
Ed

All sorts of jobs were listed by category, such as waiters, blacksmiths,

Man run gang plow s. Joaquin Co. $1.25 day bd

Boy milk 3 cows and work on ranch 50c fare
Milker 24-28 cows run hand separator feed etc. Merced Co fare 4.25

There were also city jobs and railroad jobs.

Another broadsheet, undated, was a Special list of corporations, syndicates,

in Spanish, German, Greek, French, Italian and Portuguese: Do you want
secure and steady work? We need 100 Portuguese in 5 states and 2 territories,

da Terra by Gaspar Frutuoso. It's about the leading families in the early
days of the Azores. Mostly Sao Miguel and Santa Maria...little on the other
islands. Frutuoso, I believed died in the late 1500's. I know several
people on the list have the book. I gave my copy to the Family History
 Library in Oakland.

I also sent an email with this inquiry to an immigrant friend

records in that location. The two churches are Santa Cruz which is the Matriz
