Re: [Dx4win] Packet settings

2022-12-29 Thread Joe
Hi David,
Thanks for the quick response. Sorry I've taken so long, but I was away a
couple of days.
The fields are still blank and I can't enter anything into them, but I'm
able to connect to all my usual clusters including K1EU (local) and K1TTT.
It's still a puzzle, but as long as it works...
Happy Holidays es 73,

Hi Joe,

I no longer have 8.05 so the info here is from version 9, but it should be
similar. The only settings that matter on the Packet1 tab would be Type set
to "Normal" and COM port set to TCP/IP.

The fact that you can connect to some clusters and not other is possibly an
Internet issue. Can you give a couple of examples of clusters that you can
connected to and some that you can't? Can you try connecting to K1TTT, which
I know is up and running right now.

Greetings and Merry Christmas.

Everything worked well earlier today, but just now when I tried to get
packet spots DX4WIN, version 8.05, nothing happened. I looked at
Preferences (I'm at User Level-Expert, but sure don't feel like one) and
found all the Packet Setup Parameters blank. For example, the Type window is
blank. If I click on the arrow inside the window it shows a choice of None
or Regular. If I click on either, the choices disappear, but the Type
window is still blank. The same is true of the COM Port, Baud Rate, Flow,
Data/Parity, etc. All these had entries before but are now blank.

To make it more confusing, I could still connect to a distant server, but
couldn't connect to any in New England.

Firefox, email, and packet spots on N1MM+ Logger are all working OK.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks es 73.

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Connection

2022-07-31 Thread abwltrs
Hello Jim,

Thank you. K2CAN and AB5E both work; couldn't find W0MU. Now here is what I
did after my previous post.

I feared that my original configuration file became corrupted. So I removed
C:\dx4w903 and downloaded a fresh install.
Then I dropped my license into the dx4w folder, my log files into the Save
folder, and manually reconstructed the configuration file from scratch.
Then I saved and then loaded the new configuration file and launched the
program, opened and arranged the windows, then opened the band map. Success!
With this I followed your directions and am online with AB5E.

I still don't know why I can connect to K5TX using N1MM and not DX4W. But all
works as it should, posts appear in the band map and my radio follows when a
post is clicked. I am not about to quarrel with success nor question how or
why.

Thanks so much for your reply and help.

73,

Al Walters - K5NOF

Don't select Local Host.

The list has many bad entries (nodes that no longer exist).

Try W0MU, K2CAN and/or AB5E. I know they work, I am connected to them now.

[Dx4win] Packet Connection

2022-07-29 Thread abwltrs
Hello,

I am unable to connect with any spotting network using DX4WIN although all
is Okay using N1MM. My settings in Packet 1 are Regular and TCP/IP.
Cluster node auto connect is LOCAL>cc User, localhost:7300. Callsign K5NOF.
Keep alive 90. My call appears in the Packet Window but nothing. No
connection. So next I try selecting K5DX>Houston-TX from the cluster menu.
My call appears in the Packed Window but no connection. Additionally, I
have tried to launch the band map (DX Spots Sorted by Time/right click/Band
Map and nothing.

In desperation, wondering if a near-by lightning strike could have damaged
the basic code, I copied my original save director to an off board hard
drive, deleted c:\dx4w903 and then downloaded a fresh install, dropped my
license into the folder, replaced the default save directory with my old
save directory, and after a bunch of agony, have all running again except
for the packet connection and the band map window.

Again, all is normal using N1MM. Any help would be appreciated.

2019-10-26 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Luis,

If the laptop has a smaller screen than the main computer, that window may
be off
the screen.

To get around this, save the configuration as a text file,
(File | Preferences | File | Write configuration file)

Use Notepad to edit this file

Near the end of the file, look for [W-SPOT] and set the
values for LEFT=0 and TOP=0

Save the file and use it to load the configuration from a text file
(File | Preferences | File | Load configuration file)

The packet window should be visible now

I'd try connecting to another Cluster address. That happens to my favorite
Cluster from time to time.when they are down. I just go to another
cluster in the listbingoproblem solved. Later when my
favorite/local cluster comes back up, I'll connect to it again. It's most
likely your favorite cluster is simply down right now.

You can edit the list by going into the cluster file in the SAVE
folder. It's a .txt fill. I put my favorites at the top of the
listand then all of the others below. You could even delete the
ones you never use. Or even make a backup file with all of them, while
the file you actually use could only have the few you use all the
time. You can always go back to the backup file...and often the
cluster list fille gets updated anyway.

Related, you can go into preferencs and set the cluster you want to
automatically connect to every time at startup.

Re: [Dx4win] Packet windows in latest version

2018-03-21 Thread kostas sv1dpi
you can minimize them. If you want to close them, you need to go to
file>preferences>packet1 and select none in type box of cluster interface.

The band map is probably behind other windows. Try move them to find it.

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Filtering

2017-10-14 Thread John Warburton G4IRN

Thanks for the off-reflector replies to this query.

I have come to the conclusion that I cannot do what I want to do. The DX
Alerts parameter relates to voice alerts and the 'ignore grey and black
spots' simply ignores P8 and P9 spots. Indeed, if you change the colour
of these, they are still ignored!  So at best, it is badly labelled.

It would be nice to filter out unwanted spots though!

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Filtering

2017-10-13 Thread Dan Violette
Don't see a reply yet. I am not the best to answer since I let everything
through, but some things I do know:

DX Alerts are the audible notices. This allows you to specify what you want
announced (voice, alarm, etc,)
Ignore Gray/Black I think is the highest level you can go to block.

I do not think this would work, but, have you tried setting the color for
the items you do not want to see to black? Maybe you only want level 1, 2,
3 then set 4+ to black (or gray). Pay careful attention to what each level
does. I think there is some overlap. I want new bands and modes for each
DXCC and level 6 is more important to me than 4 & 5. I pay attention to all
background highlighted spots. That is if I have kept the default spot
colors where levels 1, 2, 3 & 6 are highlighted. I may have done that
myself (forget since have had Ver 8 since it first came out years ago).

It can't be done.

Once your "preferred" node is at the top of the list, when starting
DX4WIN, in the Packet Window, type the Enter key three times. This
should get you through all the windows and connect.

I recommend using AutoHotKey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) which you can
use to do the automatic connection and more.

I have an AHK macro key that fires up my ham "workstation", which opens
Dx4Win and starts the cluster connection, and opens up a couple of other
useful programs at the same time. For something simple like that, you
invest maybe 30 minutes to learn enough about AHK to do what you need to
do, set it up, and forget about it.

All appears to be working except I cannot bring up the Packet Window.

But no Packet window which is the window that has the list of clusters so one
can hook up to on the internet. The list of clusters is in the Save directory

They're enabled when you have DX spots configured in your preferences
(packet 1 tab). The only way to turn them off is to go into your

DX4WIN will just turn them gray. If you truly don't want to see them,
then learn how to use the commands on your DX cluster node for
filtering spots.

[Dx4win] packet commands

2012-05-14 Thread George
With the ever evolving packet commands and their length I wonder if Paul has
entertained making the packet command function keys able to support the
longer commands?
I don't think a program with this power should be limited to only short
commands.
Thanks.

It's not. Check the recent reflector postings, and this application

Re: [Dx4win] packet questions new user

2012-03-03 Thread Dan Violette
From you message below: Don't forget not to update with Jim's program this
file.

If you put the -tcp=local.tcp switch where local.tcp can be any file
name, it will prepend this file during update to the DX4WIN.tcp. I have a
few TCP addresses I like always at the top and this puts them there at the
update time.

Read the whole help page on the updater. Quite powerful when you get it
set-up the way you want it.

I had wondered the same question.. Just one follow-up.

I use the local connection (to VE7CC). Is there a way to move this
to the top of the list (currently 5th) so I can use the 3 x ENTER process.

Is there an option to clear, automatically, all the old spots when
starting a new session. If not this would be a useful option.

Yes, there is no auto-login. However, once you have chosen a node,
the next time you start DX4WIN, move the mouse pointer into the the
Packet Spots window, then type the ENTER key three times. The first
time it says there's no connection. The second time brings up node
list. And the third time selects node at the top of the list. Then
you should get your node login prompt in the Packet Spots window.

Re: [Dx4win] packet questios new user

2012-02-27 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
Unfortunately, there's no auto-login feature built into DX4WIN. However,
you can make things easier by using this technique: After starting
DX4WIN, click anywhere on the packet window, then press Enter. You'll
get a little popup that says No connection active. Press enter again
and you'll get the list of available packet clusters. The most recently
used one will be on top (at least in recent versions.) Press enter one
more time and you'll be connected. At that point, you do have to type in
a callsign, though you can also program it onto one of the function keys
which might save a little time.

As for seeing the spotter's callsign, try making the DX spots window
wider (or adjust the size of some of the other columns by positioning
the cursor over the | at the top and dragging) and you'll see the
Spotter column, it's the second from the end on the right.

The spotter callsign is a column in the DX Spots window. If you don't
see the spotter callsign, maybe your DX Spots window needs to be
widened (just like any other Windows window, pull the right-hand
margin to the right). When you exit DX4WIN and restart, the window
should return to the size you set it to.

Once you get things set up the way you like it, export your
preferences to a .INI file. File | Preferences then File | Write INI
file. Default name is DX4WIN, that's fine. It will be stored in your
SAVE directory.

[Dx4win] Packet Function Key Definitions Too Short

2011-12-07 Thread Pete Smith
I've just been trying to store some of the filtering commands for AR
Cluster V6 in DX4WIN, and have discovered a problem - ARC6 uses a new
Boolean-like syntax, which can result in lengthy filtering commands like
SET DX FILTER call=n4zr OR (SKIMMER AND UNIQUE2) and (spotterstate=md
OR spotterstate=pa OR spotterstate=va OR spotterstate=WV). The space
available for any one key definition is far too short to handle such
expressions. Any way it can be made longer in the next version?

[Dx4win] Packet cluster question - sorry, it may be bit long

2011-12-07 Thread Chaz Cone
Like many of us, I learned some years ago just enough cluster commands to get
by.

Recently, I decided to tailor my internet cluster connections to give me
exactly what I want -- and I learned a lot with hours of Google research. I
now have it working (almost) exactly the way I want.

What I want is:

To receive spots only from the US and Canada
To receive DX spots only from surrounding states (I live in Georgia)
To receive DX spots only for the bands and modes for which I'm active
To receive DX spots only for the ARRL entities that I need; that is, those for
whom I've not received a paper QSL

It took a lot of research and experimentation to get this working perfectly --
but I did it! If you'd like to see my commands (as examples), email me off
list and I'll send them to you.

After you sign on to a cluster in DX4WIN, you can send the cluster commands to
the cluster and it will remember them. If you use more than one cluster, just
send the commands to each.

All spots incoming real-time are processed through the filters just fine; I
only see the ones I want.

Here's my question. Even after you've established your filters on a cluster,
typing show/dx ignores your filters and shows the most recent spots. Is there
a command that will show/dx through my filters?

If not it seems a very strange omission from the command structure.

On CC and DX Spider nodes, SH/MYDX obeys the filters. I don't know if
AR-Cluster has a similar feature.

That's why I programmed one of the F keys in my Packet Window to SH/MYDX.

It depends on the type of Cluster your using. If it's DXSpider, try sh/mydx

 What I want is:

To receive spots only from the US and Canada
To receive DX spots only from surrounding states (I live in Georgia)
To receive DX spots only for the bands and modes for which I'm active
To receive DX spots only for the ARRL entities that I need; that is, those
for whom I've not received a paper QSL

It took a lot of research and experimentation to get this working perfectly

off list and I'll send them to you.

After you sign on to a cluster in DX4WIN, you can send the cluster commands
to the cluster and it will remember them. If you use more than one cluster,
just send the commands to each.

All spots incoming real-time are processed through the filters just fine; I
only see the ones I want.

All,

My packet telnet connection has been fouled up by yours truly. Although I

Hi Tony,

Is it the Packet Spots window (the one you type SH/DX into) or the DX
Spots window (the one that's filtered against your log) that fails to
update? If the latter, right-click on the window and choose Clear All

Jim,

Thank you for your suggestion. Data is displayed in the Packet Window and
it updates.

The problem is in the DX spots [DXCC] sorted by Time window. I did try
your suggestion and right clicked in this window and it cleared.
Unfortunately, it did not subsequently update information.

Any other ideas? This is a recent change and I just don't know what I did

It sounds like the packet filters defined on the Packet 2 tab of your
preferences might be corrupt, so they are not detecting the packet
spots as a valid format. Can you restore your preferences from an
.INI file (Preferences | Merge INI file)?

[Dx4win] Packet spots spotter State identity

2010-11-11 Thread george
I was getting together a VHF packet cluster spot setup for a ham friend who
has no internet connectivity at his cabin and when I got it going I noticed
a very helpful identity on its spots.

The state of the spotter (where he is currently) was noted on the far right
side of the spot. I looked at my DX4WIN which is the latest version and I
didn't see this very useful identification?

As an example I saw a spot by a K3 station for a DX station. When I went to
the frequency I heard nothing. A check on QRZ.COM had shown that the K3
station was really in Az.

Does DX4WIN support this in its packet spot window? If so how do I get it to
indicate such?

Thanks.

Hi George,

First, it depends on what cluster node you are connected to, what
software that node is running (i.e. AR-Cluster, DX Spider, etc.) and
whether your user profile has the spotters's state turned on or off.

Given all that, if the state appears to the RIGHT of the GMT field in
a packet spot, then it should show up in the Packet Spots window
assuming you have made the window wide enough. It will NOT show up in
the DX spots window, since there is no field or column to put it in.

If the state appears to the LEFT of the GMT field, then it may show up
in the DX spots window at the far right of the Remarks column,
assuming that column is wide enough to display the full comment. To
widen it, grab the vertical line between Remarks and Spotter in
the gray header and drag it to the right.

[Dx4win] Packet Spots Filter Question

2010-07-11 Thread Jim Simon
I just ran into a glitch with DX4Win (8.04). It had been operating without
any problems, when suddenly, yesterday, when I logged on I got all kinds of
error messages (which I should have written down, but didn't), and then
instead of the regular screen, I got the old demo screen. After some
effort I managed to get out of the demo mode and restore the proper DX4Win
screens and parameters, my logbook, etc., but a weird problem remains: all
of the packet spots are in light grey, as if they are all being filtered
out, even though I selected the bands and modes I wanted in Preferences,
Packet3. Can someone suggest how to cure the problem?

Thanks es 73,

Hi Jim,

The last (and only) time this happened to me, the DX4WIN.CFG file was
corrupt. Exit DX4WIN, delete SAVE\DX4WIN.CFG, then restart. You'll
have to restore (merge) your preferences, hopefully you wrote them out

Simply adding |3 to the end of your connection setup in the

[Dx4win] Packet window formatting

2009-08-15 Thread N3SL
I cannot find anything in the help file, so would appreciate knowing how to
change the display format within the packet window.

For several versions now, I've had my DX4W windows arranged and sized the
same. WIth v8, the display of incoming spots (telnet) in the packet window
now is causing a line-wrap for every spot because of spacing/formatting.

Yes, I realize I can resize the window to have the entire spot fit on one
line. But, this is a change to something somewhere in the new version.
I've played with the settings on the Packet 2 tab in preferences to no
avail - and I think those are for incoming formats anyway. I just need to
shrink/delete all the white-space that seems to be there with the new version.

Thanks for any pointers

Hi Steve,

The Packet Window did not change in V8. Did you import your
preferences (via .INI file) from V7 to V8? My Packet Window looks
exactly the same in V7 and V8.

Maybe the cluster node you're connecting to is sending out a wider
format. You can set SET/WIDTH to narrow it.

[Dx4win] Packet Cluster Time Out

2008-08-03 Thread DONALD F MC COY
I'm using 7.02.15 which I bought at Dayton 2-3 years ago. It had worked OK
although I was not very active for about the past 6 months or so. I am a long
time DX4Win user. My OS is XP Sp 2. I am using the latest TCP upgrade. I use
the |3 after the selected clusters such as: AB5K, KØGND, K1TTT as mentioned in
Jim's tips but to no avail. I can only stay on for about 5 minutes and then get
disconnected. The problem was there before the TCP upgrade. I have held off
from upgrading to 7.03 etc for fear of exacerbating the problem. Maybe I missed
something? I am not a CPU expert but did check my settings and they looked ok.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like it might be your ISP or the node you're trying to connect to.

You might consider using the VE7CC AR/CC User program from
http://ve7cc.net. It will do automatic re-connects if the connection is
lost, then backfill the missing spots.

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Cluster Time Out

2008-08-03 Thread Ernie

Don,

I had a timeout problem last winter during contest season which I
finally figured out. My DX4WIN would time out on occasion (no more than
a couple times a day). I was used to that. But when I started using it
for cluster spots while operating one big contest weekend, it kept
timing out every few minutes. I am connected to the internet via DSL,
with the DSL modem sitting near my operating desk. So after putting up
with this for an hour or so, I placed the modem where I could see it and
discovered that I would loose my DSL connection when I transmitted on
160 meters. Other bands didn't bother it, but 160 did. My solution was
to place a .01 mfd bypass capacitor across the phone line at the DSL
jack and wrapped the phone line a few times through a ferrite core. The
RF must have been picked up by the overhead phone line near the 160
antenna and brought in to the house.

That just shows that sometimes it can be a hardware problem. :-)

[Dx4win] Packet window colors

2008-03-10 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Alan was looking at the wrong window. He was looking at the Packet Window,
which is not colorized. The DX Spots window (which *is* colorized) was buried
behind it.

He fixed the windows, but is there any way to reset all DX4WIN windows to the
default size/position? He even installed without importing his preferences and
the windows were still on top of each other.

In doing so, I've found that the color display in the packet window
indicating what's needed what isn't, doesn't work anymore. Everything just
appears in standard black text. A superficial perusal of the setup file
(which I ported over from the old version) doesn't seem to show anything
amiss. The help file talks about using the pop-up menu in the packet window
to set an active award. The only thing that looks right when I do this is the
settings menu, which just brings up the same setup file I've already checked.

What am I doing wrong, and what do I need to do to get colored spots back?

Then move the cursor to expand or contract the windows. It might be

The CC cluster filtering command are supposed to be as similar as possible to

Ken,

In File | Preferences | QSO | Check callsign update

Make sure SameCall window is open.

As soon as you enter any character, the SameCall window will show
all entries containing those characters. So if you want to see any call
containing 5TTL, this will work. When you have typed WN5, the
SameCall window will not show any entries for W5TTL, because the
substring does not match.

(This assumes you have set substring callsign search as you mentioned
you did)

2004-12-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All;

RE: Packet window and WWV (A and K numbers)

Help please. When I select 2 WWV, I get the following messages

SH/W command Error
No Help Available

What am I doing wrong?
When I select Packet function keys, it shows the following command string

WWV| SH/W/2%M

Is that correct?

Depends on the software at the packet cluster. Maybe check the help files
there, or I'd try editing the function key to send SH/WWV for a start.

For AR clusters, SH/W is an invalid command. You must use SH/WWV.

[Dx4win] Packet Window Rig Control of FT1000MP

2004-10-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This weekend I decided to use the packet window of DX4WIN for the first time.
I usually use an internet browser. I use an FT-1000MP. On this rig each band
has
an A channel and a B channel. Each press of the band button toggles between
A and B. I usually keep one of the 2 channels centered in the lower CW
portion
of the band and the other somewhere in the phone portion of the band so I can
easily switch between Phone and CW. The annoying thing I noticed was that this
seems to get screwed up if I double-click on a packet spot so that DX4WIN sets
my VFO frequency. It seems to switch to the other channel then set it to the
desired frequency. It took me awhile to figure out why my A and B channels
were getting screwed up. Does anyone know if there is some configuration
item somewhere that will change this behavior?

[Dx4win] Packet Window Rig Control of FT1000MP

2004-10-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If I am using stacking register A right now in the Phone portion of the band
and I have the B stacking register loaded with something in the CW band, then
why
does DX4WIN change the B stacking register next time I click on a spot (or at
least
that's what it appears to do). I would expect it to set the frequency of the
current
stacking register, not switch to the other one and change frequency. I guess I
can
sorta understand why the software programmer may have done that, but it sure
doesn't
match the way I use these registers. If I remember correctly, WriteLog doesn't
seem
to do it this way.

 Kelly,

Your FT1000 and DX4WIN are both working correctly and there is no config
change available. What is happening is by clicking on a spot, that frequency
is being loaded into the memory (one of the two stacking registers) on the
MP.The last frequency the MP is on is left in the register.

[Dx4win] Packet Window Rig Control of FT1000MP

2004-10-11 Thread Duane A Calvin
On Ten-Tec and ICOM radios, it switches the frequency on the currently
assigned register. With my Omni VI+ and now with my Orion, I often move
to the band/range (BSR) where the spot is going to point me and then
click the spot. That way I don't screw up the other 3 registers for that
band. Other times I'm in a hurry and just go back and fix it later if it
steps on one of my preferred settings.

They will only minimize, as long as you have a packet connection defined in

Any reason that you know of why I can't close the packet window or the DX
spot window? I can minimize, but the windows won't actually close. The
red
X does nothing in either window. Closing down the program and restarting
doesn't change anything and shutting down the computer for a while doesn't
 either. Any help please?

[Dx4win] packet spots and logging window question

2004-06-20 Thread Ronald Stuy
Hello,

Since I am using version 6.03 I have some problems with incoming packet
spots.
Each spot that comes in changes the band and mode in my logging window.

Normally it's no problem but when I am working 6 meters (without CAT system)
I will use my default band/mode settings.
I stopped the other radio, so that's not the problem.

Is there something to overrule this, instead of changing the band/mode to 6
meter for each QSO that is logged?

Ronald, PA3EWP
