Hi Shaun,
Actually, the audio issues you are describing aren't bugs at all.
That's just the way OpenAL processes audio output. As you pointed out
the sounds aren't being panned but are being processed through
OpenAL's 3d listener interface. Said reason I'm doing that is OpenAL
does not have a simple pan control like DirectSound has and all sounds
have to be processed via 3d positioning weather you want to or not.
Which explains why the sounds are low. In the previous versions I
could control the volume of the sounds with the DirectSound
SetVolume() function. Well, with OpenAL if you use SetPosition() to
control positioning it uses its own internal calculations to control
the volume using 3d calculations which is overkill for this kind of
game. In short, this isn't my fault, but just the way OpenAL is.
As for sounds being in mono instead of stereo again this is do to
OpenAL. In order to process a sound using the 3d listener interface
the sound has to be in mono not stereo. If the sound is going to be a
static sound, and then it can be in stereo, but those that will be
processed in 3d have to be mono. So that's why that is.

Cheers!

Well when I went there it was still Beta 13. But it would have made more
sense to thank Thomas for the new Beta once it was actually fully
available for download and play. But if it is indeed partially there then
with luck it shouldn't be much longer till the full file is available.

Hi Hayri,
Umm...Let me first say that is an unofficial release of MOTA beta 14
so don't go spreading around links until I officially make an
announcement to the effectthat the release is official. In this
case what happened as I uploaded that setup file this morning planning
on an official release, but discovered a couple of bugs at the last
moment so was planning on deleting the file and uploading a new one
with bug fixes in it. So you and everyone else who just jumped the gun
will have to redownload the entire setup file again when I upload said
fix and make an official announcement. To say I am upset with you is
an understatement. Now, I have x number of broken releases out there
in the wild all because someone couldn't
keep there big mouth shut long enough for me to sort it out and make
sure the most stable build as uploaded.

Thanks a frickin' lot!

Hi Shaun,
Yeah, I know. That's an issue I'm working on. Basically, it comes down
to setting the proper min and max attenuation on the sound buffers so
they roll-off more gradual or more rapid. In this case I need to set
the attenuation factor so the roll-off is more gradual. it is
probably something easy I can fix once I play with the sound
settings more.

Cheers!

Hi,
There are actually two reasons why the sounds are uncompressed. The
first one is that the game performs smoother/faster without having to
attempt to decompress the audio data from ogg, mp3, wma, or whatever
before loading them. That cuts way down on CPU power and load times
using uncompressed sound data. The second issue is I'm something of a
perfectionist when it comes to sound quality. Personally I think mp3
and ogg really kill the audio quality of music, sounds, etc and to me
the drop in audio quality was very evident.
Still if the size of the downloads becomes an issue I can certainly
release the public releases using ogg format or some other compressed
format if people really want to go that route. On the beta list we
discussed this and most were of the opinion leaving the sounds
decompressed was a better choice, but hey I can do either one here.
Just depends on how people feel about it.

Hi.
Well, I'm not noticing any lag here, but then again I'm running it on
a Compaq C500 with a 3.6 Ghz processor, 1 GB of ram, and Ubuntu Linux
10. It is fairly responsive on this system. It seams to also run
about the same on the Windos computer I have here.
Maybe if you send me a copy of your specs I can see what is causing
the lag. It is probably the fact I'm using generic input events
rather than something like directInput for keyboard and joystick
handling now.
As for the size the reason is do to the fact I'm not currently using
any compressed formats like ogg. They are uncompressed wav files which
are obviously larger. I felt the game ran better and sounded better
using wav rather than ogg, mp3, wma, etc.

Hi Shaun,
Actually, the audio issues you are describing aren't bugs at all.

Re: [Audyssey] Mota Beta 14-standart.exe!

2010-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I took the file down as soon as I discovered Hayri and others were
trying to download the beta before I managed to correct some last
minute bugs and reupload the final release. That's why if you don't
hear it from me the release isn't official or even recommended to
download yet.
It is true that was going to be the final stable release, but while
the Windows version was uploading I was testing the Linux version when
I discovered some last minute bugs. A quick check of the Windos
release proved the same bugs were in that version as well. So I had
planned to scrap the existing setup file, fix the bugs, and upload a
fresh copy Monday or so. Before I got to that Hayri decided to let the
world know that the broken version was available for download.
Ah, well...I did get some useful information out of this release and
will attempt to correct the various issues before beta 14 goes public
for real. It is an new engine so as a result there is bound to be
several undiscovered bugs in it.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!

2010-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, as I say unless you here it from me it isn't official. I always
will make a public announcement regarding a new release of something,
and not just to let people know it is out there for download.
for one thing if there is any special setup instructions required such
as installing SFML for Linux, for example, I'd certainly make a note
of it in my announcement so people know to do that. Not only that
where and how to get it for your version of Linux.
Plus I'm working on experimental joystick support using SFML. I might
want to let people try it out on their joysticks to see if it works
properly. It isn't enabled in the version people are passing around,
but assuming I get it working before the official public release I'd
like to make an official announcement to the effect joystick support
is now enabled and to get some special testing/feedback on that
feature.
The point I'm getting at if someone just rushes off to my public
download area, grabs the file before the announcement, etc they are
bound to miss some information that could prove important. What if,
for example, instead of including SFML in the setup file I had someone
install that separately, and the person didn't know that?
Well, I would get flooded by bug reports that the game wasn't working
because he or she didn't install that extra component I would have
told them to in my announcement. Being impatient and going off
half-cocked like that never pays in the long run.

Cheers!

Hi Bryan,
That's no great mystery. My downloads directories have always been

constantly keep an eye out for my server so that as soon as a file

before I can change my mind or make some sort of official
announcement that the files are ready for download. Leaving my new

an official announcement etc, and in this case my trust was broken.
I now realise there are some people too impatient, too childish, to

assumed that was the final release and went for it and got burned for
it in the process. Frankly, I'm kind of glad it blue screened on him

[Audyssey] Message to Michael Barnes

2010-10-02 Thread Oriol Gómez
Hello,
this is a message for Michael Barnes, seeing the moderators are doing
nothing about it.
Will you please either ask all your questions in one message, or
simply stop asking entirely? Your 10 or so daily questions are
getting extremely repetitive, and I'm sure nobody even reads them
anymore - at least I don't.
Thanks for listening!

Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!

2010-10-02 Thread Charles Rivard
In cases like this, I would only pay attention to bug reports from beta
testers, and send a blanket Email to lists that have such impatient members
who downloaded what they should not download, saying that problems are their
own problems because they did not get any notification that a new release is
ready for download, or something to that effect.I think that everyone
who is impatient, remember this: Pioneers are the first to be located by
arrows.

I have been unfortunately without Internet service for the last few days,
and am just getting caught up on Emails that have been piling up. I do not
do mass deletions in case something important would be missed, so it might
take a while to get caught up. Hopefully, by the time I get caught up,
there will be an officially announced and released public beta to work on
for those who are willing to wait.

Hi Bryan,
Smile. Yes, that is always a good idea. Even though a setup file might
be in the public downloads area doesn't mean it is official until I
say it is so. In this particular case especially so since beta 14 is
using an all new game engine. I've worked hard the last two weeks
debugging it and am still finding bugs. That's actually what
happened today.
I recompiled the source, made a setup package for mota, started
uploading it, and then began to make a Linux tarball. I tested the
Linux version when out of the blue I found another handful of bugs I
hadn't noticed before. I didn't know if they were Linux specific or
not so I tested the Windows release and found some of the bugs showed
up there as well. Naturally I began working on those bugs, and I hope
to have a fixed more stable version by Monday or tuesday. So those
like Hayri who downloaded the one I posted today are getting
essentially a busted release all because they rushed to get it before
I made an announcement. That doesn't make me very happy as I could run
into bug reports and complaints from unsuspecting people who didn't
know the situation before hand.

Hi Hayri,
Umm...Let me first say that is an unofficial release of MOTA beta 14
so don't go spreading around links until I officially make an
announcement to the effectthat the release is official. In this
case what happened as I uploaded that setup file this morning planning
on an official release, but discovered a couple of bugs at the last
moment so was planning on deleting the file and uploading a new one
with bug fixes in it.

Hi Michael,
There is no checkers or Pokemon games for the blind that I know of.
You know you really should check out
http://www.audiogames.net
and see what is in their database. Usually if a game isn't listed
there then it pprobably does not exist.
Also check out the list of games on
http://www.pcsgames.net
and see what is available. If you don't find it on that sight then it
probably doesn't exist.
So with that in mind rather than flooding the list with questions
perhaps you should get a list of games that do exist so you can ask,
shall we say, more informed questions about the games that are out
there.

Cheers!

strategy games:
Backgammon, Dominoes, Draughts (Checkers) and Scrazabat, an accessible clone

I think Checkers is named Draughts in great Brittan.
I don't list all of the accessible games ever made, only the ones I think

There were plenty of DOS and early Windows games that were discontinued and

Hello folks,
We have just released version 1.1 of the RS Games Client. As a patch
to version 1, it contains mostly bug fixes but adds some new features.
We added the escape key in, fixed bugs with screen readers, made the

copying/pasting of the history buffer, added global volume control,
and more.
Simply head on over to www.rsgames.co.nr to download it.

well I decided to play the new version with a friend listening and he

I use the v command and the view for pits and spikes but its quite
disconcerting.
I have no idea what the exit crash was on exit but my friend said it
was a directx crash, but did not give me any more info.

naturally after I realised the update was buggy I went back to beta 13
on that note when is the fps version supposed to come out, I realise
you have been busy but wasn't this supposed to come out with this
beta or a little after beta 13?

I don't mind but maybe could have the installers smaller, even if you
had the files compressed get decoded after install or something?

the install is huge.
I don't mind the sounds in what they are though.
At 02:50 a.m. 3/10/2010, you wrote:

Hi,
There are actually two reasons why the sounds are uncompressed. The
first one is that the game performs smoother/faster without having to
attempt to decompress the audio data from ogg, mp3, wma, or whatever
before loading them.

Hi Bryan,
That's no great mystery. My downloads directories have always been
public. I often point people there when I have a game on the server,

constantly keep an eye out for my server so that as soon as a file
shows up in my public downloads area he grabs it without waiting for
any official word from the developer.
This entire situation has definitely made me rethink my public
download area setup. I'm strongly thinking of moving my games to a
private area where snoopers won't be quite as eager to grab the files
before I can change my mind or make some sort of official
announcement that the files are ready for download. Leaving my new
releases in a public area requires trust from the public to wait for
an official announcement etc, and in this case my trust was broken.
I now realise there are some people too impatient, too childish, to
wait for me to get the official word out one way or another. He just
assumed that was the final release and went for it and got burned for
it in the process. Frankly, I'm kind of glad it blue screened on him
as it serves him right for downloading a broken release before I could
fix/address the problem directly. I hope he and others have learned a
lesson I have good reason for not releasing an announcement until I'm
absolutely sure the game is stable enough for public release.

anything to do with fg anymore.
I saw himm write on a bunch of lists, however if me or someone emailed hi
m about the games, the emails just got planely ignored.

Does anyone know how i can contact the makers of freedom games? i really
think that the millionare need a to be updated. they need to have more
categories you can choose from. or they could do it like the abc show
was done by having a mix of questions to answer until you get to the last
question. but if their is gonna be different categories to choose from
they need to add more. and i would love to see them finish up wheel of
furtune.

[Audyssey] sounds and their volumes

2010-10-02 Thread shaun everiss

Hi.
tom there is another way, to do the sounds but its going to be consuming to do.
in night of parasite sounds are at the same volume or rather less,
depending where they are.
however each position centre, slightly right, medium right and hard
right same with left and behind are seperate files.

OFcause this means a bigger game.
It also means a lot of initial work, with editing and fiddling with
the sfx but this could be a way to handle the sounds.
in beta 13 I hear a monster to my right its quiet ish because its to
my right it comes closer and closer and gets louder and louder.
however its never fully in the centre in fact once it is I am sure
its to close same with the pits.
right now once the sound gets in the to close or almost to close its
to loud and vice versa though I know its there at the range I need it
so can handle it.

Though I don't have the file anymore I went back to beta 13.
One way you could have the game do things is have the sounds
compressed in a big file to make it smaller then during install the
file is uncompressed.

not sure how it would work, and it would probably take longer than necessary.
I did not notice any lag with the game but I have a duel core of 2.1
ghz with 2gb ram with xp pro and the cpu didn't budge.
It may be something to think about though I am sure you are doing
your best and not many of us should have single cores anymore.

[Audyssey] rsgames client bug

2010-10-02 Thread shaun everiss

hi.
looks like there is a bug when using sapi.
It says invalid option even though I never pressed anything, this
does not happen in nvda.
Interestingly enough whenever I used nvda or rather in the first
version I used nvda, and then after exiting the client tried to run
sapi it would only work with nvda so obviously something was broke, I
never reported that but it was fixed anyway this is not a big issue
but I thought I'd report the invalid option thing.
