Re: [Audyssey] Dice Roller was guess the number game

2009-12-24 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
Yes but having the text and roll show up on the screen or have a repete
button that reads the screen to you.
Instead of fixed dice sides like the GMA Dice Roller it would have an edit
box for number of sides.
Yes the GMA program can do that but with sound files and sometimes the f4
doesn't work.

I thoght a SAPI version would work better if your SAPI was working.
So the program would say type in the number of sides on the dice.
an edit box
then hit enter to roll
and the result with the sides repeted such as ,
A 100 sided dice roll is,
then the roll number
54

Hit A to announce the last roll, hit r to repete the same dice roll.
thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,
I'm pretty sure I could whipsomething like that up if you could tell me
exactly what you were looking for. I'm assuming here you want to be able
to do a standard 6, 12, 20, or 100 side dice throw for an RPG game like
DND or something like that right?

Phil Vlasak wrote:

Hi Jim,
Could you turn your guess the number game to a simple dice roller?
It would roll one die and you could specify how many sides.
and the output would be using SAPI.
Sometimes the GMA dice roller is hard to use on some systems.
It could recap what you typed saying,
Your 100 sides dice roll is 52.
thanks,
phil

I have had the same issue with an old system my grandpa has.
all his stuff is on an unsecured system because we didn't have the equipment

due to it dieing mainly because of all the spyware and viruses and the fact
that one of the fans in the power unit has been on the blink for some

However because of the condition it was not possible.
So just reformat and lose your stuff.

Should be ok as long as you don't autorun the drive.

the system.
I say this because one day a friend of mine paniced and shut down his system
during a disk scan with norton disk docter because he was not used to the
noise and got scared.
this resulted in destruction of his boot record and required an reinstall of
the os only, which was fortunate.
Also fortunate for him because he was running dos 5.0 and I had 6.22
however that was long time ago you can't do that with windows based system.

Re: [Audyssey] Asteroids was Missile Command

2009-12-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Bryan,
Yeah, the AGM definitely was a major disappointment for all involved. It
would have been nice to be able to whip up a quick copy of Frogs and
Flies, Adventure, whatever using a tool like that, but being a student
project it had no commercial funding or dedicated people to maintain it.
They didn't even release it as open source so the community could have
updated it ourselves. So it was pretty much a big waste of time and
energy downloading it. Too bad because it actually did have a good
design concept, and initially sounded very promising.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
I'd love to see an audio version of Berzerk or Adventure or even Frogs
and Flies, all games for the Atari 2600. In fact those were three
projects I'd planned to attempt using the Audio Game Maker when it was
released two years ago, but let's not even get started on what a
fiasco that turned out to be. It had potential certainly, I'm not
arguing that, but the bugs that were left unsquashed made it all but
impossible to get the most out of the program. And it didn't help that
the program was a student project for a gaming class and once the
semester was over the project was pretty much scrapped once there was
something for us to download.
Needless to say though I did attempt to create both Frogs and Flies
and Adventure, with a very few relatively modern touches thrown in
(namely a few additional enemies and hazzards), I was able to get
neither the dragons nor the frogs, flies and crocodiles to behave
properly. Heck, I couldn't even make the player behave properly.

Ah yes. My brother actually got a Pacman record for Christmas one year,
probably based on one of those cartoons. As I recall the story was that the
ghosts stole all the fruit in Pacville in the hope that Pacman would grow
weak from lack of energy.

Hi Jim,
HI see. If I recall the main story behind Missile Command, at
least the original one, it was suppose to be about an interplanetary war
between Earth and Mars. You, the game player, were suppose to be
commanding a high tech missile defence station, and shoot down the
incoming alien missiles. I only remember the story somewhat because back
in the 1980's some of the more popular games of that era had a few comic
books or cartoons based on them. For example, remember the Packman
Saturday morning cartoons?

Cheers!

Jim Kitchen wrote:

Hi Thomas,

Yes, we are talking about the same 1982 Atari 2600 Missile Command game.
It could have been a laser cannon, but I thought that they were missiles
and that was a missile trail that we saw so that we saw where they were
going. The main reason that I thought that they were missiles was
because when they got to where you targeted they exploded if they hit the

[Audyssey] Dice Roller was guess the number game

2009-12-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Phil,
I'm pretty sure I could whipsomething like that up if you could tell me
exactly what you were looking for.

It could recap what you typed saying,
Your 100 sides dice roll is 52.
thanks,
phil

Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter

2009-12-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,

Cheers!

Hi Nicol,
To my knowledge there never was any enemies on levels 13 or 14 on Pipe
2. Ever stop to
consider the game may have simply been made that way instead of it being
abug?

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Santa Claus is back and other Code factury games

2009-12-24 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi list,

I just tried to download the game Santa Claus is back from Code factory, but
I got a page not found error.

Is Code factory totally down?
And if this is the case, has someone the Santa Claus game and maybe others
too from Code factory and can host or upload them somewhere?

I really would like to play this game and perhaps the others from Code
factory again.

Thanks for any help in advance, best regards and happy christmas from

Re: [Audyssey] Asteroids was Missile Command

2009-12-24 Thread Bryan Peterson
I'd love to see an audio version of Berzerk or Adventure or even Frogs and
Flies, all games for the Atari 2600. In fact those were three projects I'd
planned to attempt using the Audio Game Maker when it was released two years
ago, but let's not even get started on what a fiasco that turned out to be.
It had potential certainly, I'm not arguing that, but the bugs that were
left unsquashed made it all but impossible to get the most out of the
program. And it didn't help that the program was a student project for a
gaming class and once the semester was over the project was pretty much
scrapped once there was something for us to download.
Needless to say though I did attempt to create both Frogs and Flies and
Adventure, with a very few relatively modern touches thrown in (namely a few
additional enemies and hazzards), I was able to get neither the dragons nor
the frogs, flies and crocodiles to behave properly. Heck, I couldn't even
make the player behave properly.

Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza?
Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.

Hi Brice,
Yeah, I'd like to see a good Asteroids clone myself. I started work on
one a couple of years back, but Raceway and mysteries of the Ancients got
in the way. So I haven't yet had time to get back to work on my own
version of Asteroids. Although, it is still something I'd be interested
in completing.
Especially, now that I am creating a 3d game engine I could actually make
a much cooler version of Asteroids than I had originally planned on
creating. Instead of a simple 2d arcade game as I had thought of doing I
could go full 3d having asteroids above and below the player as well as
all around the player's ship. The alien ships could also attack from any
angle making it a much more interesting space game than the original
Asteroids.

Cheers!

well jim kitchen has admitted some years back his code is not prity either.
not sure if this is true still or not.
I programmed in javascript and pascal.
and in pascal I would go nice and fast forget to put capitals on var or
something or forget somethingelse and my program was locking up, restart,
restart, oh man where is that code, where is it.
This is already an hour, oh man I need to smash something.
eventually I found it but yeah.
Actually I think javascript is teaching bad programming practice as you can
store variables etc anywhere you want and it really couldn't give a stuff.
so if you then go pascal or other languages and try to do that well.

Hi Damien,
Smile. Yes, we all need to start somewhere. As it happens a while back I
found some cds with some very old source code on it, code from my
college days, and I was horrified when reading the source for some of
those programs. It was obvious I didn't have a clue what I was doing, or
I had an idea of what I was doing, but not quite sure how to write
programs professionally yet. So we all have had our amateur days.
I also understand what you are going through with C++. Although, I took

don't have an extremely strong grasp of the language myself. When .NET
came out around 2003 most of the contract jobs I was looking into wanted
VB .NET or C# .NET, so I learned those languages, and that is mainly
what has been in high demand ever since. The end result was even though
I knew the basics of C++ I never got to grow into the language and get a
lot of hands on experience with it, because I'm working with VB and C#
.NET professionally. Now, that I've decided to begin using C++ for games
I'm finding myself looking up tutorials and refreshing my skills to get
back into the swing of things. It isn't that hard for me since I
basically know what I'm doing, but I also know my skills and experience
aren't as good as they should be.
I'm making mistakes and doing things a more skilled C++ developer
wouldn't. So it could be some time even for me to get back into using
C++ with any degree of skill and experience.

Re: [Audyssey] question on ordering

2009-12-24 Thread dark

Hi Shirly.

Which games are you talking about?

Generally these days most games you pay for online with paypal or a creddit
card, though some companies also accept postal checks too.

then, you get either a registration code to turn the demo into a full
version, or a link to download the full version from somewhere else.

A few developers stil supply games on Cd, but as shipping is expensive, and
these days many people have fast connections which allow for quick
downloads, this has fallen off rather a lot.

while the registration key method with payments via paypal or creddit card
is most widely used, it really does depend upon the individual developer,
and you can't generalize, so there's no real answer to "how to order games"

I will say for obvious reasons most developers do try to make the ordering
process as easy as humanly possible.

Hi Tom,
I don't know what site you're talking about, but yes, the game isn't
available to download or purchase directly from the Future Boy website. I
ended up writing to the General Coffee Film Productions Company, who
produce the game along with the Hugo text adventure engine (their website
is www.generalcoffee.com/) to inquire about the game. They gave me an
email address to purchase the game using PayPal, then emailed me some
download instructions. If you want the demo version of the game, you can
get it at the Interactive Fiction Archive, www.ifarchive.org/, in the
games/hugo folder.

  Hope this helps.

hmmph interesting.
I was able to buy it through their cafepress system.
Here is the issue.
its not needed but I'd create an account first at www.cafepress.com
Reason being I tried to order first and got a message that my credit card was
not able to be processed 2 days after it supposedly went through.
The bank did charge me for the stuff even though I had not processed anything.
An email to gc got me that it hadn't.
I created the account manually, logged in to it and then things went to plan.
weird.

[Audyssey] question on ordering

2009-12-24 Thread Shirley Starblanket
Hey gamers. Is there different ways of ordering games? I found a website on

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Giftanum?

2009-12-24 Thread Damien C. Sadler

Hi Thomas,
Well, to be honest everyone starts somewhere. I dread to think if I went
back 5 years what my code looked like. Even now I am not very experienced
with games programming. Yes I can make the odd utility in VB, but even then
I've been having reports left right and centre regarding bugs that I can't
seem to replicate.
However, learning C++, I am right back to novice state. I feel humiliated to
say that so far, after almost a month of trying to learn, I still can't even
write a clean hello world program. Probably because of its extensive nature.
In VB, I had to write it as a message box simply because I wasn't practising
coding by drawing a window and saving an executable. So as you can imagine,
writing a 3 liner in a message box to writing an 85 line version creating a
window is a large jump.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi Damien,
Cool. I just wanted to check, and I personally don't have a problem with
you taking over Giftenum. You have the other XL Studios games anyway so it
makes sense that the rights stay with you.
In terms of Jason's code I have to agree with you. I've been programming
for about 10 years, and his code was very messy. He was definitely not a
very experienced programmer and his code litterally screamed amateure
programmer. For that reason alone I wasn't exactly happy about upgrading
the game without a full and clean rewrite of it anyway.

Cheers!

I made those sound adjustments for him, repatched the installer, and sent

Shane then contacted me, claiming that I had broken the source code. As
it happened, I hadn't even touched the source code, and upon checking I
found that the code would not run or compile either, claiming files,
functions and variables to be missing.
Shane then took the game down and informed me that he was no longer
interested in developing it. Therefore I went to Jason, asked if I could
take over, and he gave me the code for all three games - Self Destruct,
Giftanum and Danger City.
Since then I have been hosting the originals on my website until I could
get the games updated, which I will admit took a lot of time to get to

[Audyssey] Asteroids was Missile Command

2009-12-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Brice,
Yeah, I'd like to see a good Asteroids clone myself. I started work on
one a couple of years back, but Raceway and mysteries of the Ancients
got in the way. So I haven't yet had time to get back to work on my own
version of Asteroids. Although, it is still something I'd be interested
in completing.
Especially, now that I am creating a 3d game engine I could actually
make a much cooler version of Asteroids than I had originally planned on
creating. Instead of a simple 2d arcade game as I had thought of doing I
could go full 3d having asteroids above and below the player as well as
all around the player's ship. The alien ships could also attack from any
angle making it a much more interesting space game than the original
Asteroids.

Cheers!

Brice wrote:
I think it would be cool to see a accessible asteroids game. I also
think a cool shooting game would be this game called swoop for the
Mac, if their was an accessible version, and it was converted for a
window platform, I would play the heck out of it.

2009-12-24 Thread Kelly Sapergia

Hi Tom,
I don't know what site you're talking about, but yes, the game isn't
available to download or purchase directly from the Future Boy website. I
ended up writing to the General Coffee Film Productions Company, who produce
the game along with the Hugo text adventure engine (their website is
www.generalcoffee.com/) to inquire about the game. They gave me an email
address to purchase the game using PayPal, then emailed me some download
instructions. If you want the demo version of the game, you can get it at
the Interactive Fiction Archive, www.ifarchive.org/, in the games/hugo
folder.

  Hope this helps.

Yours Sincerely,

Re: [Audyssey] Missile Command was Triple J Shooter

2009-12-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
Well, I was thinking more of Troopenum here when you mentioned Missile
Command, because the games do have a couple of things in common. Even
though Troopenum is technically suppose to be a Space Invaders clone the
Gorbian levels are more like Missile Command than Space Invaders. On the
Gorbian levels you have Gorbian ships falling down out of the sky. In
addition to lining them up by using the left/right arrow keys you also
have to move the barrel of your laser cannon up/down to center the
target. This is why I thought of Troopenum when you mentioned Missile
Command.
As far as Missile Command using Patriot missiles are you sure we are
talking about the same version? The version I am thinking of was
released around 1982 or so for the Atari 2600. Although, I know there
were PC versions released later the only one I remember playing was the
old Atari game from the 1980's. That one definitely used a laser cannon.
Either that or the poor graphics were so bad that it looked like a laser
weapon.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Need A Walkthrough for Future Boy

2009-12-24 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Jay,

Yeah, wasn't that cool back in the dos days when if the programmer did it right
all text on the screen would be read by the screen reader. I miss being able
to program like that. But, so, that is why I now use the sapi5 text to speech
engine. Just went from putting text on the screen to sending it to the sapi5
speech engine. Of course one wants to make sure to program in the review mode
stuff.

Re: [Audyssey] Giftanum?

2009-12-24 Thread Damien C. Sadler

Hi Thomas,
Wow, certainly some news to me.
About two years ago, Shane Davidson put Giftanum on his own website for
download, along with the source code. I downloaded the game and read in the
updated documentation that there were still some sound updates to make.
I made those sound adjustments for him, repatched the installer, and sent it
to Shane.
Shane then contacted me, claiming that I had broken the source code. As it
happened, I hadn't even touched the source code, and upon checking I found
that the code would not run or compile either, claiming files, functions and
variables to be missing.
Shane then took the game down and informed me that he was no longer
interested in developing it. Therefore I went to Jason, asked if I could
take over, and he gave me the code for all three games - Self Destruct,
Giftanum and Danger City.
Since then I have been hosting the originals on my website until I could get
the games updated, which I will admit took a lot of time to get to grips
with Jason's coding methods. Then of course I start actually updating the
thing I am switching languages, so I would have to do a whole rewrite
anyway. So much for a wasted half year! *Grin*.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi Damien,
Not that this is a big deal to me, but there appears to be a small
conflict of interest regarding Giftenum. It was my understanding that
Shane Davidson obtained the source for Giftenum from XL Studios, and he
asked me a few months back if I'd take over the project and help him
upgrade the game. I mentioned I would, but do to the length of time it is
taking on Raceway and MOTA I've not found much time to do much with the
game as yet.
Now, you are saying you are taking over development. Did Shane or Jason
ask you to take over the game, or was this something you decided to do
yourself. Like I said it is no big deal to me, but I don't want us to end
up writing two different versions of the game, each claiming rights to it,
and then figuring out someone goofed up with the right hand not knowing
what the left hand was doing type of thing.

Thanks.

Hi Karl,
Thanks for letting me know. The link should work now - the website will
shortly be undergoing a major rearrangement so all broken links should be
fixed round about new year.

Regards,
Damien.
