Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

Hi Bryan,

One day after many many rounds with a 12 gauge my shoulder was getting sore.
My friend told me to just hold it with one hand against my hip. It surprised
me, but it worked just fine. It was even fun.

Hi Jim,
That's interesting. I've never been told to try that before. As far as
shoulders getting sore my grandpa's old shotgun packs one heck of a
kick. My step dad is, or was, a game hunter, and he tried it one time
and it knocked him on his rear. Plus he had a pretty sore shoulder the
next day. It was sort of funny to watch.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-12 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Ryan,
Laugh. That is a good point. Still Mysteries of the Ancients actually
was never intended to be a side-scroller in the first place. I had
originally designed it to be a 3d FPS title, one reason I am using the
Genesis engine for it, and after much end user protest I made it a
side-scroller since this was a replacement for Montezuma's Revenge. So
in that respect because it is using the Genesis Engine any features
available in the Genesis Engine can be made available to the game.

In modern games a lot of emphasis has been placed on reality. Questions have
been raised about everything from the precise way to shoulder a rifle to the
patterns projectiles make when striking different hard surfaces. What
exactly would it look like if a newspaper stand exploded? If the time in
this setting is X, how big should this character's shadow be?

Nevertheless, Mysteries of the Ancients is a throwback to an older-style
game, and while realism is nice, we went for many years without it. Nobody
ever asked Alucard how he managed to carry around dozens of swords, items of
food, projectiles, etc. Even in Shades of Doom the size of one's inventory
is limitless. Miriani is one thing; mainstream games are another.

I don't think we need to worry about Angela finding explainable ways to pick
up--let alone store--her various weapons. After is all said and done, it's
just a game, and I assume the greatest part of the reason anyone is playing
it is to escape reality. I'm okay with not being bogged down in endless
details. Otherwise, Thomas better code consumable food and private corners
for Angela. After all she's been in that temple a while, and nature is
nature.

2009-06-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I liked the enter keys able to pick up objects, sort of like your left hand
doing this while the space bar controlled your right hand holding weapons.
If you are going for reality, then with two hands you should be able to pick
up objects if you have a hand free.
But if you are holding a weapon and have a torch burning, so have both hands
occupied, then the enter pickup should be prevented.
You could also prevent the taking of potions if you are holding a weapon and
a torch too.
If you don't have a torch burning your accuracy with the weapons should be
less.

I think these are not critical to getting the game out and could be added
later to the engine.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Phil and all,
Well, one of the primary reasons I asigned fire and pick up to the same
key and joystick button is for ease of use when playing the game with a
joystick or game pad. When you play the game a lot with a joystick like
I do the player is limited to 10 to 12 buttons. So in order to do
everything you can do on the keyboard many buttons have to share
commands with something else by pressing at least two buttons down at
the same time. Another way is by changing the buttons action or state by
holstering or drawing a weapon as is often done in several mainstream
games I know of.
Bottom line, I guess I am developing the game from a mainstream
perspective and enjoy playing the game with a joystick rather than
depending on keyboard support as many accessible games often do. As a
result I am certain there are many gamers here that find this way of
doing things strange or overly complicated even though someone like
myself is quite comfortable with it. Never-the-less it is no big deal to
change it back to the way it was in beta 3 when you could press enter to
pick up items and space fired a weapon. I'll just have to remap the
joystick to include a pick up button and remove some other command from
the joystick.

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Bryan,
Those are some very good points/arguments in favor of holstering weapons
before picking up items. After all any person using a shotgun is likely
to steady it with one hand while using the other to pull the trigger.
Another absolutely two-handed weapon is the bow. Your not going to have
a hand free if using that weapon. As for the sword I imagine it to be a
long sword similar to those used by Xena or Hercules on the television
shows. Those certainly can be used one handed.

2009-06-11 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I can imagine Angela holding a torch in one hand and a shotgun in the
other.

She comes along and sees a gold coin.
She flips the torch up in the air, picks up the coin, puts it into her
pocket then catches the torch.

Then when she reaches the locked door she puts the torch in her teeth pulls
out a key and unlocks the door.
Maybe that's how she can fire the shotgun or an arrow while still holding
the torch.
Or how about if she slides the torch inside her bra and lets her chest hold
on to it.

But that would interfere with her vision.
Maybe she duck tapes the torch on to the back of her head.
Or how about the torches being bulls eye lanterns with head straps.

As this is an ancient greek temple, any sort of catana would seem very out
of place, - sinse why would even a Japanese explorer take a Catana into
the temple with them?

I'd personally guess the sword would be a gladius, a short one handed weapon
later adopted by the romans for both their gladiators (hence the name), and
soldiers in the Roman army.

I'm guessing that like the bow and arrow, the sword is a wrelic of the
temple, rather than something which was lost by previous unsuccessful
explorers like all the fire arms and amo.

The sword could be either one or two-handed depending on the type...
whether it was a lighter thing like a shortsword or even a katana, or a
heavier longsword, broadsword... or what have you. As for the shotgun,
well, I can't say there... but I do agree on the bow being the one weapon
that yo ucould never use one-handed.

I've seen sawed off shotguns that are about as big as a large pistol that
can be used one handed.
But the weapon that could never be used one handed is the bow and arrow,
unless it was a crossbow and then you would have to load and cock the bow
with the other hand.

Hi Thomas,
I liked the enter keys able to pick up objects, sort of like your left
hand doing this while the space bar controlled your right hand holding
weapons.
If you are going for reality, then with two hands you should be able to
pick up objects if you have a hand free.
But if you are holding a weapon and have a torch burning, so have both
hands occupied, then the enter pickup should be prevented.
You could also prevent the taking of potions if you are holding a
weapon

and a torch too.
If you don't have a torch burning your accuracy with the weapons should
be

less.

I think these are not critical to getting the game out and could be
added

later to the engine.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-11 Thread dark
As I said, I like the weaponry management of the game, and having no weapon
(as needed for jumping), is just another part of that.

It's probably slightly late in the game for another suggestion, but how
about having draw/pickup as enter and action as space?

This would seem more logical to me, sinse it would let you act with just the
space bar, but have the ability to draw a wepon nice and quickly with an
obvious key, rather than having to scrabble for w in a hurry.

Then again, as a long time player of the Graphical Mega man series, using
menues to switch weapons is quite okay with me as well so I usually just use
the tab key.

Just a thought.

Hi Phil and all,
Well, one of the primary reasons I asigned fire and pick up to the same
key and joystick button is for ease of use when playing the game with a
joystick or game pad. When you play the game a lot with a joystick like I
do the player is limited to 10 to 12 buttons. So in order to do everything
you can do on the keyboard many buttons have to share commands with
something else by pressing at least two buttons down at the same time.
Another way is by changing the buttons action or state by holstering or
drawing a weapon as is often done in several mainstream games I know of.
Bottom line, I guess I am developing the game from a mainstream
perspective and enjoy playing the game with a joystick rather than
depending on keyboard support as many accessible games often do. As a
result I am certain there are many gamers here that find this way of doing
things strange or overly complicated even though someone like myself is
quite comfortable with it. Never-the-less it is no big deal to change it
back to the way it was in beta 3 when you could press enter to pick up
items and space fired a weapon. I'll just have to remap the joystick to
include a pick up button and remove some other command from the joystick.

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Historically speaking a lot of Greek soldiers carried a short sword
called a hoplite. The hoplites carried by military officers were as much
a work of art as a weapon as they were often decorated with fancy hilts,
golden scabbards, and had all kinds of mythical imagery engraved on
them. They were pretty nice weapons although Greek soldiers specialized
in spears and shields rather than swords. So I'd say the sword in this
game should be a hoplite or something similar.

dark wrote:
As this is an ancient greek temple, any sort of catana would seem very
out of place, - sinse why would even a Japanese explorer take a
Catana into the temple with them?

I'd personally guess the sword would be a gladius, a short one handed
weapon later adopted by the romans for both their gladiators (hence
the name), and soldiers in the Roman army.

I'm guessing that like the bow and arrow, the sword is a wrelic of the
temple, rather than something which was lost by previous unsuccessful
explorers like all the fire arms and amo.

Hi Phil,
Hahahahaha. That was funny as usual. Though, well pointed. It is very
hard to add realism to the game because of though very reasons. Either
the weapon or the torch has to go somewhere else to fre up a hand to do
something else.

Then when she reaches the locked door she puts the torch in her teeth
pulls out a key and unlocks the door.
Maybe that's how she can fire the shotgun or an arrow while still
holding the torch.
Or how about if she slides the torch inside her bra and lets her chest
hold on to it.

But that would interfere with her vision.
Maybe she duck tapes the torch on to the back of her head.
Or how about the torches being bulls eye lanterns with head straps.

True. A longsword might be a one-handed weapon but depending on the

if not direction.

Hi Bryan,
Those are some very good points/arguments in favor of holstering weapons
before picking up items. After all any person using a shotgun is likely to
steady it with one hand while using the other to pull the trigger. Another
absolutely two-handed weapon is the bow. Your not going to have a hand
free if using that weapon. As for the sword I imagine it to be a long
sword similar to those used by Xena or Hercules on the television
shows. Those certainly can be used one handed.

Ah yes. I've used both 12 and 20-guage shotguns ad the recoil alone pretty
much demands that you use both hands. Not only that but they're pretty heavy

I was just making a joke about dealing with too many things in her hands.

Hi Thomas,
I can imagine Angela holding a torch in one hand and a shotgun in the
other.
She comes along and sees a gold coin.
She flips the torch up in the air, picks up the coin, puts it into her
pocket then catches the torch.

Then when she reaches the locked door she puts the torch in her teeth
pulls out a key and unlocks the door.
Maybe that's how she can fire the shotgun or an arrow while still
holding

the torch.
Or how about if she slides the torch inside her bra and lets her chest
hold on to it.
But that would interfere with her vision.
Maybe she duck tapes the torch on to the back of her head.
Or how about the torches being bulls eye lanterns with head straps.

Hmmm...Yeah, but sawed off shotguns are illegal. Not sure how likely or
unlikely it would be for Angela to find one in the tomb, but for the
game purposes I was thinking of a standard 12-gage shotgun.

The katana was only used as an example... I would be the first to say

figured the gladius would be it though, otherwise just your standard short

As this is an ancient greek temple, any sort of catana would seem very out
of place, - sinse why would even a Japanese explorer take a Catana
into the temple with them?

I'd personally guess the sword would be a gladius, a short one handed
weapon later adopted by the romans for both their gladiators (hence the
name), and soldiers in the Roman army.

Hi Thomas,
I liked the enter keys able to pick up objects, sort of like your left
hand doing this while the space bar controlled your right hand
holding

weapons.
If you are going for reality, then with two hands you should be able
to

pick up objects if you have a hand free.
But if you are holding a weapon and have a torch burning, so have both
hands occupied, then the enter pickup should be prevented.
You could also prevent the taking of potions if you are holding a
weapon

and a torch too.
If you don't have a torch burning your accuracy with the weapons
should be

less.

I think these are not critical to getting the game out and could be
added

later to the engine.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-11 Thread Ryan Strunk

I'm okay with not being bogged down in endless
details. Otherwise, Thomas better code consumable food and private corners
for Angela. After all she's been in that temple a while, and nature is
nature.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-10 Thread Bryan Peterson
I'm downloading it now so we'll see. Could be an issue with your connection.
I remember not long back I was using wireless internet with a Belkin router.
If the mods will excuse the language it was always hell do download even a
relatively small file. It would et to a certai point and then just sit
there. Fortunately with Firefox you ca click the Pause button in that
downloads dialogue box and then click Resume to start the download up again.
The only problem was that you had to keep doing this every few seconds if
you wanted to download the entire file. Unfortunately however, if you
attempted to download particularly large files such as the NLS downloadable
books or even some audio games, you couldn't do this. You could certainly
pause te download once it stopped transferring, but if you clicked Resume
you would sometimes get a Download Error message. Of course your situation
could be different for all I know. I just know it used to happen to me all
the time, at least until the Belkin router finally bit the dust and I
replaced it with a Linksys. So far it's worked just fine for good sized game
downloads. I could never have downloaded one of these Betas on the old
network.

Hi Tom. I've tried twice to download the new mota beta but it won't

problem with other files I've snarfed down today so you may want to take a

Hi Michael,
Ok, I just downloaded the game and it doesn't appear to be a problem
with the server or the file. Must be a bad connection. Try rebooting
your system and see if you can download it. If you are using Firefox you
can click the pause button in the download window and then click resume
to try and force it to complete the download.

You have to be careful with that though, especially with bigger files.
Sometimes when you click Resume you can get a Download Error message. I know
that from personal experience. As I say in another message I had to fight
with my old wireless network to download even a fairly small file.

Hi,
Sorry, but the Mac and Linux versions won't be out any time in the near
future. We have had some rather serious technical issues that lead to us
deciding to shelve the cross platform versions. I can't say when we will
take them up again. All I do know is that the Windows releases of
Raceway and Mysteries of the Ancients are a much higher priority for us now.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-10 Thread Bryan Peterson
It does sort of remind me of a old NES game called Battle of Olympus, though
that game's story was quite different. It was basically a retelling of the
old story of Orpheus and Euridice, although she was naed Helene in the
game's manual. As such your mission was to travel throughout Greece, finding
items until you could open the way down to Tartarus. The main differences
were the fact that Orpheus doesn't fail to rescue his love and you actually
had to fight Hades at the end of the game. You did, however, get to meet
quite a few familiar gods along your way, Zeus not the least. And then of
course you got to face such bosses as the Cyclops, the Hydra , the three
Grea sisters (SP?), the Siren and of course Cerberus. It was quite a fun
game, albeit extremely infuriating at times.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 5 Released!

2009-06-10 Thread dark

Hi Tojm.

I like, particularly the way that item frequency is down, it makes the game
significantly different not knowing what weapons you've got.

When you eventually list weapons in the game's manual, how about a range
list? I love the aspect of using specific weapons on specific enemies, and
found myself just pistolling skeletons and saving the big guns for the big
nasties.

I also approve of the ducking sound effect, though I believe that was
in earlier.

I ended up by just going a bit loopy against the cyclopse, sinse I'd just
run out of mp5 amo, so i basically went in all guns blazing with a couple of
potions under my belt in case he beat me around, which stratogy worked.

As always, certainly looking forward to more levels and the game's final
release, I think it's going to be a big day when you get this one out the
door.

Beware the Grue!
