Re: [lace] Arlene Scaroni, and Hungarian contact
Hi Devon, I have no contact information but wanted to let you know I’m excited about a lecture by Arlene about her work on replicating the Spiro Mound lace. I guess you could call it “lace archeology “. I saw Facebook posts about it over a year ago and would love to know more. Thanks for the additional information. It certainly sounds like movies I’d like to see but I don’t have access to the Hallmark channel. I may be able to view it online. Re: [lace] History of Lacemaking Coming to America
I looked through the book Elena linked. It has pre-Colombian examples of bobbin lace, also, which reminded me of a post on Facebook Lacemakers a while back by Arlene Scaroni who is working on replicating lace found in Native American mounds in Oklahoma. I believe it was similar to netting, used for holding pottery. She demonstrates a technique where the bobbin threads hang on a structure rather than working on a flat surface. If I remember right, she suggests it’s possible early European explorers learned the technique from the indigenous people and took the knowledge back to Europe. An IOLI.lecture from the doily free zone creator, however, mentioned a recent discovery of bobbin lace in a European grave from the early 1400s, though more details won’t be available until a study is published. I guess that would negate the Western Hemisphere first theory. But we’re learning more all the time about ancient travels, so who knows. It's interesting to contemplate. I did not trim the message below to keep the context & link and because it’s short. [lace] New lace book based on Delapre Abbey exhibit
Iâve seen announcements recently on Facebook about this new book and wanted to make sure The Arachne group is aware of it. Iâve copied the verbiage below from Louise Westâs website, louisewestlacedesign.co.uk. I think other people have it for sale also and Amazon.uk. Itâs spiral bound. On Facebook thereâs a brief video of a flip through so you can get a glimpse of how the content is presented. âA spiral bound A4 book - a collection of original lace patterns compiled by Jackie Poulter in conjunction with the Lace Guild exhibition 'Discovery'. âThe book contained 23 new designs by various designers, inspired by architectural features of Delapre Abbey in Northamptionshire and includes photographs of the inspirational features. The patterns use techniques of Milanese, Torchon, Tatting, Needlelace, Bedfordshire, Bucks Point, and Russian lace, and show the inspiration that the designs were taken from, to give an idea about designing and to inspire designers for the future. The simplest tile, and stencilled ceiling as well as a spiral staircase provided some of the inspiration for the designs. âA true collaboration of designers, teachers and lacemakers coming together to produce this pattern book in only 8 months. âOnly 500 copies have been printed so it is unlikely to be in print for too long. âAdditionally the Bedfordshire designs by Louise will be available shortly as 'Ready to work' prickings, on the 'other patterns' page of the shopâ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Learning lace
Speaking as a relative newcomer to bobbin Lace, I think if I were going to teach a newbie, I would start with a tape lace. Lynx lace.com has good introductory lessons. This lace type presents the basic stitches, sewing, rounding a curve, edge stitches but only uses a small number of bobbins. Also I would stay away from very fine thread to start. #8 Perle cotton would be good for a beginner. Once they do a couple patterns they could move on to whatever style appeals to them. I wish my holiday preparations were all done and I could sit down and work the tree pattern from the last Lace magazine. The patterns in that issue were exceptional, I thought. Also the description of the 2018 summer school was dreamy. I’ve seen the news coverage of the California fires and sincerely hope you remain safe and that they are quenched quickly. [lace] 2017 Motif exchange
I received my motif from my exchange partner, Lin Hudren, in yesterday's mail. It was her own design of a bobbin lacemaker done in Romanian Point Lace. It is very pretty and very well executed. I already thanked her privately. This is a real treat for me because I've wanted to learn this technique and now I have an example of what it should look like. A funny coincidence is that the card she sent me was homemade featuring her dog and the one I sent her was homemade featuring my cat. Thanks, Lin for organizing the exchange and setting it up to minimize deadline stress. It provided the impetus to use a book I've had on my shelf for over a year but hadn't tried. Re: [lace] La Dentelle Russe
Thanks to all who replied to my query about the book. It is in 7 sections on the Arizona.edu site. The photos are there and are indeed good quality. I can enlarge them on my tablet and really see the details. The reason I'm digging into a Russian lace history is to put information together for our IOLI charter chapter to present at programs in our local libraries, including a very, very broad and brief history of the development of lace. I only included European history and the question came up in our group, "did European lace migrate to Russia or develop there independently?" In Bridget Cook's book on Russian lace she says it dates to the 12th century, predating bobbin and needlelace in Europe, but she may be referring to cutwork or drawn/pulled thread work. I found a book from 1906 on Google Books, Russia, Travels & Studies by Annette M B Meakin, in which she says, "Lace was more worn in Russia than in any other part of Europe.. yet the best books written upon the subject of lace in Western Europe practically ignore Russia." she goes on to praise Mme Davydoff's book. Arachne has members with amazing depth of knowledge. If any of you have suggestions about how I should word a brief statement about the historic development of Russian lace, I'd appreciate your input. [lace] La Dentelle Russe
Have any of you ever seen the book "La Dentelle Russe" by Sophie Davyoff published in 1895? I read a reference to it in a book about Russia written in 1906. It said there were many photographs of old Russian lace in it, as Ms Davyoff had personally visited each of the 11 (as I recall) lace centers in Russia at that time. I don't see it in the IOLI library list and a quick online search didn't provide any info. Just wondering if it is worth searching further. Re: [lace] lily lappet - pattern?
> > The lappet of tomorrow... What a great idea. I'm very fond of lappets and find interesting the transition of their usage throughout the centuries that they were popular. As time went on, they weren't necessarily attached to caps, but just pinned to the hair on each side of the head. If they hadn't gone extinct, maybe it wouldn't seem so weird. I can't figure any practical purpose for them with or without a hat. They should be honored for their longevity, if nothing else. What other non-jewelry ornament has remained stylish for so long? Re: [lace] Sewing Out
While we are on the topic of sewing out, I'd like to ask a question. When ending a project, I tie a square knot and sometimes another knot, so there are 3 half hitches, with each pair, as I've read that is what should be done. The knots have length to them, though I want them to be snug to the piece and invisible. Each half hitch makes a longer tail. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong? Re: [lace] Used book prices - The Lace Guild's book offerings
I agree about the benefits of the book sale. When Jean Leader announced the Lace Guild book sale, I checked the list right away and found a couple treasures. They are already on their way to me in Pennsylvania. I emailed the librarian to see if they were still available. She is only there 2 days a week so I didn't get an immediate response, but I heard back from her on her next workday. She was able to email an invoice to me with a Paypal payment option. Push of a button, login, and it was done. So quick and easy! The PayPal screen shows the price in pounds and dollars, so there is no uncertainty about price. [lace] Tally technique
I would like to offer profuse thanks to Jean Leader for posting a video to YouTube showing how to make tallies. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth ten thousand. It was a tremendous help to me. I have now made a number of them resembling smooth boxwood leaves more than the sadly mutant oak leaves I kept producing before. The video is titled Leaf Shaped Tallies in Bedfordshire Lace, should you want to view it. Re: [lace] Bookmark exchange
In today's mail I received a lovely bookmark from Lorri Ferguson in Washington state. The lace, a scalloped edging is beautifully done and mounted on a fabric ribbon. I'd not seen that before and just love it. It sturdies it up and makes It practically usable as a bookmark. Also included was some history about where the pattern came from, which I really appreciate. It being Scottish is so fitting, as I have a bit 'o the Scots in me. Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives
I don't know if email works differently in the UK, but in the U.S., email addresses do not have to be tied to the service provider. There are gmail, hotmail, and yahoo which offer free email addresses. One can access them online through the website or set up the email program, Outlook, for example, so It receives them on a computer or tablet. The best thing about this is you don't have to change your email address if you change providers, so people don't lose track of you. You could have an email address exclusively for lace communications. Jean Reardon, Mercer PA where I think I hear someone building an ark. Re: [lace] 1931 lace making clip
Imagine my surprise when I watched the clip and saw the exact edging I am currently working on. The pattern was published in Geraldine Stott's Bobbin Lace Manual, page84. It is called Running River. She says, this old Bedfordshire pattern is meant to represent the meandering River Ouse at Bedford, with the many water lilies that lie on the river there. I did not learn to make bobbin lace until I was in my 60's. Needless to say, I envy the speed with which the lady is working. And one handed? Oh,my. An article in Lace magazine from the 1970's said local lace makers believed a person could not learn properly after the age of 4. Re: [lace] Picot problems
What helped me finally get my picots right was learning to put them round the pin in the correct direction. Left hand picots both threads go clockwise. Right hand picot both threads go counterclockwise. And I agree, no tension until it pulls up to the pin. I know you probably already know this, so please forgive if it sounds too elementary.
