[MBZ] Diagnosing an exhaust leak

2012-01-19 Thread andrew strasfogel
As many of you are aware, my 1985 300TD with the CA version engine
emitsw smoky odors when the heater comes on. It's likely I have an
exhaust leak, or perhaps an issue with the trap oxidizer. The car
makes no louder than normal exhaust noise and runs quietly.

Question: What's involved in diagnosing the source of the
leak/problem, and how easy/challenging will it be to fix?

Re: [MBZ] Diagnosing an exhaust leak

2012-01-19 Thread Dan Penoff
I have a couple of suggestions:

1.) Get a mechanic's stethoscope and go over the system in detail with it. If
you go over a leak with the stethoscope, you'll know it.

2.) Create smoke in the system and look for leaks. You can do this by
introducing small amounts of ATF or Seafoam into the intake. Not my preferred
method, but it works.

3.) Get a helper and using a thick towel or similar object have them block the
outlet of the tailpipe while you observe the system closely. This will take
several attempts, but the back pressure can expose leaks in the system.

4.) Look over the system closely for dark marks where exhaust gases may be
escaping, especially around fittings and joints.

Just a few things I have used in the past.

Does the hood fit right, and is the rubber seal at the rear edge
of the firewall still there? Is there a crack in the flex tubing

[MBZ] Replacing M103 Top Timing Cover Seal

2012-01-19 Thread Dan Penoff
I need to do this on the 300E, and since it's been a good 10 years or more
since I have done one, I have been looking at the various postings in different
forums as to the proper procedure.

There seems to be a great deal of dissent as to whether one should apply
sealant (Hylomar) to the strip seal or not. It looks like the factory procedure
says to put so dabs of sealant at the ends and oil the seal itself to allow the
cover to slide over it when replacing the cover.

Others suggest putting a film of sealant on the whole seal.

Anyone here want to comment?

Rule 1. NEVER transport a flammable substance in an enclosed space. Every
year, several horrible deaths happen because someone puts their BBQ grill

a spark which produces a very horrible path to death.

Be safe, think this could kill me and train those around you.

[MBZ] Cigarette Smoke

Thanks everyone from some great suggestions. I have decided to try most all of
them. I have rented an ozone generator for 2 days for $50.00. Before I use it I
will clean the entire interior thoroughly and install the 4 new cabin filters.
After I finish, I plan on alternating coffee and baking soda in containers at
night and putting sheets of fabric softener under the seats. It may be overkill
but my wife gets migraines and I just plain can't stand the smell. Other than
that and the fact that the sunroof has to be repaired I am generally happy with
the car. It is a cool color (Black Opal) which looks black from afar but
blue/green up close or in the sun. The drivers seat has a 4 tear from wear,
but I have already gotten my Leatherique kit in and that will be repaired this
weekend as well. It is my first W210 to own and I am looking forward to seeing
how it does.

Looks to me like the bulk of the C2H2 had 'left the building',
and only what was left inside the panels and behind the dash,

have been the _big_ boom.

Opinions follow, beware!

Cleaning: Most excellent! Not sure whether ammonia or vinegar
(or both!) is the best solvent for this grime, but I bet you'll
find out. I like my homemade window cleaner (ammonia/alcohol
mix in a spray bottle) for glass and hard surfaces. Get them
all, for sure.

Ozone: Sounds good, attack it at the source. I have a thrift-shop
ozone generator I got for cheap years ago, but I've not yet had
occasion to use it. Have been warned about potential damage to
rubber, plastic, and fabrics if overused.

Coffee/BS: they are absorbants, sucking up what migrates out of the
vehicle into the air. How better than leaving windows open so
migrations can just leave?

Softener, Febreze, etc.: Pew! Adds to the problem IMHO.

Re: [MBZ] Cigarette Smoke

I suggest you sprinkle the baking soda over the entire surface of the
carpets.. make them white with baking soda... It is a harmless material as
far as chemical reaction with the carpet and will vacuum up cleanly. If you
cover a greater surface the baking soda will do what it does best even
better with greater surface area to absorb the smell.

The carpets are a major fabric surface that has soaked up the smoke residue
for the life of the smokers residence, so for greater success, attack that
surface. It's cheap and it absorbs odor like crazy. You may want to do
several applications with a vacuum between each.

Coffee grounds... never had luck with them, but... who doesn't like the
smell of fresh brewed coffee?

Ammonia is a nasty material.. to the human body. I would vote against it.

In it's place I would suggest a now common household cleaner with Orange
oil [by product of orange juice making, the orange oil comes from the
peelings] Orange oil has a very pleasant smell and it removes grease and
residue better than any product I have found.
Plus, it's bio friendly and clear water washes off any residue of the
cleaner.

Try some, you will be impressed at how well it works.

I'd replace the cabin filters after the rest of the cleanup was done.
Or if they were really cheap, I'd replace filters, run fan on recirc
during the ozone wash, and replace the filters again when done.

holding them over my head with both hands and swinging them down onto the

Amazing how much crud this dislodges.

I do it until I can't see anything left from the beating, then I use a

You know what I always wonder with this type of conversion? How does
the climate control work?

People always say a swap of an SBC or other American engine into
another car has been done right, but what does that mean, exactly?
On a Mercedes you'd have to plumb the cooling system of the new engine
into the monovalve, weird thermostat, and heater core. You'd also
have to make sure that the Klima relay was still getting the signals
it expected from forward of the firewall to activate the compressor
clutch---refrigerant temp and pressure, etc. Maybe you just have to
expect to do without functioning A/C. Or maybe the V-8 fits in a
small enough space that there is room for the old refrigerant lines,
condenser, etc. to stay where they were? But then you'd probably have
to mate the old radiator and fan clutch to the new engine. None of
these are insoluble problems, but I wonder if Joe Shade-tree with a
dead 300DT and a 1970s 351 Windsor motor lying around managed to solve
them, or even tried.

If it is not expected to be cold for long where you are, you might try
hanging a trouble light under the hood (or 2 of them if you like).

Or, you can get the magnetic heaters that just stick on to the oilpan to
keep the oil warmed up a bit.

Or, the kind that goes in the rad hose. All much easier and probably
about as effective as the in-block heater.

Hi Rusty,

Thanks everyone from some great suggestions. I have decided to try most
all of them. I have rented an ozone generator for 2 days for $50.00.
Before I use it I will clean the entire interior thoroughly and install
the 4 new cabin filters. After I finish, I plan on alternating coffee and
baking soda in containers at night and putting sheets of fabric softener
under the seats. It may be overkill but my wife gets migraines and I just
plain can't stand the smell. Other than that and the fact that the sunroof
has to be repaired I am generally happy with the car. It is a cool color
(Black Opal) which looks black from afar but blue/green up close or in the
sun. The drivers seat has a 4 tear from wear, but I have already gotten
my Leatherique kit in and that will be repaired this weekend as well. It
is my first W210 to own and I am looking forward to seeing how it does.

No doubt the radiator type work well, they also give you cabin heat much
faster. They use 2x+ the electricity though and much of the heat is wasted
because it goes into the radiator and gets radiated out to the outside world.

IIRC the problem with a dipstick heater is that cold oil won't radiate heat
well enough and can cause oil to burn to the stick when it gets hot.

Also IIRC the best use for a dipstick heater is to keep a warm engine warm
overnight. The one I found on Amazon is only 90w so keeping it on overnight
wouldn't be that bad electric-bill-wise. At $13 from Amazon it might be worth
it if you lived somewhere it didn't get all that cold for all that long.

The radiator hose kind are not near as effective as the block heater.
For twice the electricity, the heater hose 1500W with pump work on
older cars, but you have to leave the heater valves turned on. I

Far and away the best is the block heater. The maggot (magnet) type

Re: [MBZ] Replacing M103 Top Timing Cover Seal

2012-01-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Sealant in the corners only, slot must be perfectly clean, seal
should be lubricated with a thin film of silicone grease.

Press down on the cover going on so that it slides straight onto the
guide pins, if you use the pins to rotate the cover in place (that
is, push the bottom inwards and the top out) you will surely roll the
seal.

Check the seal with a bright light and a mirror before bolting up, if
it's not correctly in place, take the cover off and try again before
the RTV on the cover sets.

The fix will work for a year or so, when it will start to leak again.

apply sealant (Hylomar) to the strip seal or not. It looks like the
factory procedure says to put so dabs of sealant at the ends and
oil the seal itself to allow the cover to slide over it when
replacing the cover.

Others suggest putting a film of sealant on the whole seal.

Fwiw the seats aren't too bad to disassemble, and you don't really need the
special tool mentioned in the EPC.

If you want to get the odor killers (especially aerosol ones) deep in there,
there is no way more effective than throwing the cushions in a heavy duty
garbage bag and using a high-powered vacuum cleaner to suck the air out. Spray
the aerosol into the bag as you let the air back in.

You may also want to remove the two dust filters (behind the glove box) and the
carbon filters and spray some (approved) odor remover into the fresh air intake.

Replace the filters with new.

The filters are effective enough to render the car impervious to
two-days-in-the-hot-summer-sun dead skunk.

I do think that the 210's are fun to drive :) I'm liking Michelin primacy's in
a v rating on mine (16 rims); they seem to handle and stop in the rain almost
as well as they do on dry pavement.

Mine are rock solid and stable, and you have to watch the needle, since they
will ride as smooth at 85-90 as they will at 35

I'll kvetch about the rust issues (and the hygroscopic PSE located near the
battery--NO drinks in the rear seat!!!), but they are nice cars. They are even
better with multicontour front seats!

When you end up doing the front sway bar links, do the bushings, and buy all
new fasteners. The E torx heads may round off, but the external easy-out
sockets work well on them.

BTW, when inspecting perches, bear in mind that they start to separate at the
back corner, so if you ever see any separation between the lower bead of
sealant and the perch, get to ordering parts.

The guy that did mine charged about $1300 including alignment. I don't
remember the part number, but it's basically a frame section with a
pre-attached and sealed perch. It is secured by 40 structural steel 1/4 pop
rivets.

Installation requires complete removal of the suspension on the affected side,
which accounts for most of the cost

black from afar but blue/green up close or in the sun. The drivers seat has a
4 tear from wear, but I have already gotten my Leatherique kit in and that
will be repaired this weekend as well. It is my first W210 to own and I am
looking forward to seeing how it does.

The guy that did mine charged about $1300 including alignment. I don't remember the
part number, but it's basically a frame section with a pre-attached and sealed
perch. It is secured by 40 structural steel 1/4 pop rivets.

I think I'd rather just pay $500 more for a 4MATIC (but you don't really have a
choice if you insist on a diesel). Around here, a really nice 2000-03 4MATIC
might be a $5-8k car, and I've seen decent ones with 180k for $4k. A really nice
98-99 turbo might be a $8-10k car, and the difference buys a lot of fuel for
somebody like me driving 5000+ miles a year.

2012-01-19 Thread buymbparts
I paid 4k. 2 owner car. All books and records (a pretty thick folder). Paint is
nice. After smoke out and drivers seat fix, I feel like it is a very nice car.
Sun roof bugs me a bit, I'll figure it out next week. All in all pleased. No
comparison to the C280, much, much nicer car. I thought I liked pre 1992 cars,
but I like this one more each day. I must be getting old. Crap. Nothing
compares to my 1991 560SEC, it is still the BOMB!

I do this also, but the dirt never seems to stop coming - I quit when my
arms get tired, then vacuum.

Amazing how much crud this dislodges.

I do it until I can't see anything left from the beating, then I use a
 sweeper on them.

 Crude but effective.

[MBZ] SDL won't start

2012-01-19 Thread Benz Hogs
Over the last 6 weeks, the SDL has been hard to start when the engine is
hot, this was mostly noticed during our 2100mi road-trip from Chi to MI
to AR to Chi. The car always started fine when cold. This week, Wed
morning was about the coldest it has been so far (temp of ~12F) and the
Wife could not get the car to start. When I tried, it would barely
manage 1-2 compression strokes, now tonight (with the block heater on at
temp at 6F) it won't even attempt to turn over and the dome light
doesn't even hint at dimming when the start position is engaged.

The weak hot start shows a flaky starter. Now it's acting like a
battery issue, yet the battery is 6mo old and all lights show brightly.
I'm confused. Tomorrow morning I'm going to hook up the Dodge for a
jump and charge for 15min or so and see if that makes a difference with
the block heater staying plugged in all night. And, if I feel up to
managing the ~2F temps, I'll grab the volt meter and check voltage drop
when the starter is engaged.

Any thoughts? Do I plan to be calling Rusty for a starter? TIA all,
