I'm going to become a bundler for Hilz and start a solar company to put
clean green power in Cuber. I'll make billion$!

Of course I will never install a single solar panel, but I will get
billion$ because of my /good intentions/. I'll have some pretty heavy
overhead, will have to build an office, villas for the help (and me
too), buy a G5 to fly back and forth, outfit the whole deal in an
appropriate fashion, will need some boats and nice G63's and helicopters
to do exploring of sites, and that will all have to come first.

I'll model the effort on the Clinton Fam Foundation efforts in Haiti,
set up the Thomas Family Foundation, hire my kid for $350k/yr, get her a
staff of 6 or so to deal with details while I set policy and such.
It'll be awesome!

Won't argue much with that, though Tim Scott seems half smart (but we
weren't talking about smart -- way to deflect the discussion). A friend

daughter works for Tim), and has for a long time, and thinks quite
highly of him though he has done some things I find a bit questionable.
Another friend of mine, a flaming liberal from Lawn Guyland, accuses
Scott of being a disgrace to his race because he has the temerity to
be a R and espouse such principles. She believes he should uniformly
vote for free sh*t and if he doesn't he is a disgrace to his race.

That reminds me of staying in a hotel in Las Vegas NM one night when on
our way from Houston to Taos we got stuck by a snowstorm with 2 kids and
2 poodles who did not really get along (dogs and chirruns) so we had to
get 2 rooms and eat in shifts to keep all the individuals happy.
Anyway, it was a cool old hotel, from back in the 1800s. Flash forward
some years, I am watching the movie No Country for Old Men and there is
a scene where they are sitting in an old hotel having a conversation,
and I think That looks familiar and it was that very hotel lobby.

If anyone is ever in Austin, there is a neat old hotel there called the

Friends have a pair of these Asian tiger or leopard cats or something,

fetch toys and what not.

Once we went to Wisconsin to visit my mother, and for some reason we had taken
the cat. One evening the cat got into the attached garage, got scared and
climbed up into the rafters, well out of reach. No amount of calling,
pleading, or cat food would coax her down.

I had SWMBO stand at the door leading to the house and call the cat. I found a broom,
yelled Scopa! and charged. This produced the desired response, as Cat
rapidly exited the garage back into the house.

My wife would sometimes curse the cat in Italian, which I'm sure she also
understood quite well.

I assume there are air bags in each location and each will need to
be replaced at some point? The sticker says they need to be
replaced this month, correct? Seems like that would require a
large price reduction. Don't recall the year of the ML but I think
it was between 2000 and 2005. Is there a time frame when air bags
need to be replace ?

[MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet

2015-07-06 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

Or, web cam and existing fone or ipad...

I have an older wifi cam and wanted to see if I could get it working
with a cheap tablet of some sort as a remote viewer. The cam had some
sort of windows software that I never used, but I could see it with VLC
on my Mac after putting in some sort of weird script, but a VLC upgrade
would not see it any more. I found an earlier version and installed
that and it worked again, but then I got a new router with my Uverse
install, and it wouldn't see it anymore though it was still visible on
the network. I sorta gave up on fooling with it at that point.

Now I am wondering if I could use a cheap tablet as a monitor for it,
somehow. I have an old Android phone and an old ifone too, there is a
VLC app for the phones and ipad, so I am wondering if that might work
somehow. If I could get it working then I could buy one of those $50
tablets and have a continuous monitor. THere might be some other apps
too, I have not looked into it.

Or should I just buy one of these and use it and not fool with the other
one? Or will the same s/w work with the old one I have?

The last coupla days I have popped several squirrels that were getting
all the squirrel seed my wife puts out for the birds. I think I got 5
or 6, some of them ran off after getting hit but I think they probably
did not live long. There are 2 or 3 more around that ran off before I
could get them.

They learn pretty quickly but I think this must have been a recent wave
as they were not yet afraid of me or the pellet gun. If I got most of
them there might be more moving in to fill the niche.

I zeroed in the scope of the pellet gun and put some bike lube in the
barrel, that thing cracks like a .22 now when I fire it, and I can put a
group into a quarter-sized circle at 50ft or so. I got one squirrel
that was way up in a tree maybe 30ft or so, knocked it out and it
thunked but got up and ran off. Another one made it up about that high
before succumbing and dropped down.

I leave them out there, most of them disappear over night, I guess
raccoons or possums or something gets them.

Gray squirrels, fox squirrels?

But I think we are both arguing the same point, NOS is new OLD stock

I stepped harder and it sat there for the duration of the red light, but on

floor. Not a good thing in traffic.
I drove it the few blocks home at lunch and put it back in the garage but
something is wrong. It brakes but not very hard and pumping the pedal does not
all that much to make it better.

It feels like when one presses on the pedal while another bleeds the brakes. It
just slowly descends until close to the floor.

I have looked where it was parked and do not see any puddles of fluid.
The resevoir does not look to be down.

I shall have to look a bit closer to see if there is something leaking.

If not, then I suspect the master cylinder is leaking internally.

Anyone have a better conclusion based upon the symptoms?

If so, is there a kit to repair or am I compelled to replace the whole thing?
In either case, where would one best look for parts?

When the ospreys are flying around and screeching the tree rat
population gets mighty scarce too. One day a year or two ago we were
sitting on the front porch and there were some squirrels around, all the

the porch rail, I think it was looking for one of the rats. They

made no sound as it went by, not even a whoosh.

I'm suspecting that the need to feed several hungry chicks has put a serious

Re: [MBZ] Ceramic brakes Wuz:This is bad

2015-08-08 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Are they free-range, renewable, ethically-produced pads? Not all
organic is equal!

--R

On 8/8/15 1:02 AM, Curly McLain via Mercedes wrote:
FWIW: I have never had ceramic pads on an MB. ALL stop well, no
problems with fade, etc with the cheap or midrange pads. The very
cheapest pads are ok, they just make your wheels dirtier. Midrange
are a little less dirty for the wheels.

OE on the MBs were organic or asbestos, depending on age. (pre 1990 MBs)
OE on the dogde were ceramic, so I used ceramic there.

DO you want or care about clean wheels?

Ceramic will keep your wheels cleaner. I've had very good luck with
cheap pads from oreely. They do make your wheels dirty. I just clean
and paint the wheels every few years with a rattlecan. Unless you are
driving on a race track, the cheap (organic) pads work very well. If
you plan to drag the brakes all the way down a mountain, they may
fade, but I never have any problem.

Ceramic on the dogde van: The anti skid accelerometer has been fubar
mostly since we got the van. Most of the time the system turns itself
off, but sometimes the LF brake drags. this ruins the discs and
pads. About 18 months ago I put new pads and rotors on; did the
ceramic pad breakin stuff; and they were wonderful.

Unfortunately, i never figured out how to snip the purple wire
somewhere buried under the console that is said to disable the
antiskid system. So the new rotors and pads are ruined. I recently
dug in to the console innards and found the accelerometer. I never
found the purple wire, but I unplugged the accelerometer, with the
same effect. Anti skid is now dead. There are 2 fuses you can pull to
disable, but it also kills the speedometer, odometer and some other
somewhat necessary systems. This is all not really the fault of
ceramic pads, but i don't think the cheap pads would cause the rotor
warping like these did.

The whole deal of the special breakin procedure for the ceramic pads
is related to not warping the rotors and putting a glaze on the
ceramic pad.

How do organic pads compare to ceramic?

He's mulling

http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20150808/PC1603/150809393/1009

I think he just came by a little while ago, I heard the helicopter
buzzing around, but I did not go out to wave the flag.

My buddy and his wife were riding their bikes on the beach when they
were here a few weeks ago, saw Mrs. B jogging on the beach early Sunday
morning. She had a coupla SS guys trailing along and the Coasties had a
dinghy following off the beach, and there was a cutter a bit further off
shore. I was riding my bike the afternoon they came, bunch of cops came
flying past me in the road and closed it down, I rode on to the
roundabout and stopped next to one of the deputies and was chatting with
him, the motorcade came by a few minutes later. The deputy seemed
rather bored with the whole matter and seemed to rather be doing
something else. I got a bunch of pics. It was actually fairly low-key,
only 6 or 8 vehicles aside from ever how many cops. It always buggers
up the (one) road coming out this way as they have sort of a rolling
blockade that blocks off other roads and driveways and such for 10 or 15
minutes. I have no idea why they don't just fly him out in a helo from
the airport and dispense with all the drama but I guess that would be
more involved.

He occasionally comes to the little shopping center down the road for an
ice cream or whatever, usually fairly low-key. I try to avoid the place
this time a year as it is full of idiot Yankee turistas who check their
brains at the bridge before proceeding on out this way.

The HF stuff is reasonable for the price, I have an air hose and various
fittings, they work. I have the $20 recip saw, that thing just won't

with some abusive use.

Take a look at banggood.com for some really cheap stuff, order it from
China and it shows up some time later in the mail or UPS or whatever.
I'm not sure how they can make any money with the free shipping on stuff
but it is all reasonable quality, probably the same stuff every other
store sells just factory direct with minimal markup. Some tools, but
lots of other random stuff. dealextreme same thing.

Re: [MBZ] CHANGE YOUR FUSES!

2015-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
So I found the fuse chart in a paper that was folded up and tucked in
the fuse box, it has the map for all the boxes in Deutsche, Anglis, and
some other language. Found the ciggy lighter fuse, and of course there
are no spare fuses and no fuse puller thingie. Had a 15A fuse in my
toolbox so popped the old one out, it was fried, popped the new one in,
now there is juice to the ciggy lighter phone charger thingie. Mama
will be happy now. Unclear why she did not mention it to the dealer
when she took the vehicle in for the A or B service or whatever it was
on Friday week ago. Sigh.

The ones in the car are marked S as in 15S, is S the German for A?
Did they have their own guy named Schultz or something who discovered
current flow, and this is some sort of snub to M. Ampere? (Hey, Dieter,
throw me a 15 Schultz fuse in there willya?)

I should probably go buy a coupla boxes of fuses and a little puller
thingie to put in there so next time it blows I can tell her how to
CHANGE YOUR FUSES!

BTW the service consisted mostly of a 10k mile checkup and filters
(engine and cabin) change, maybe oil too I forgot to notice, which
according to the dealer guy would have been like $900 but it was covered
under the CPO or warranty we got or something. Another one is included,
so after another 20k miles I guess I am going to have to do all that
stuff (and buy myself a good bottle or 3 of whisky). She was ragging
about why it is so expensive to do that stuff. I tried to explain but I
was having a hard time convincing myself.

Will the DAS system cover this 2012 ML? Or is there something else like
it? I should look into that if I am going to have to maintain this
thing myself. I'm wondering too if the main computer in the thing talks
to all that stuff and there might be some kind of special codes to get
into it? That would make some kind of sense, at least some Merkin sense.

I found some pdfs of the charts for the 4(!!!) fuse boxes that some MB
tech posted, including a vid that shows where the pass side panel is
(not where the manual says it is). I guess they are findable on some MB
maintenance server somewhere, probably only accessible by techs. She
just left on errands, I'll look at it when she gets back.

That’s nothing. My 2003 S430 (W220) has four fuse boxes. And some electrical
items have “electronic fuses” as MB calls them. It’s a fancy name for saying
that they’re using an SCR to control a circuit, and it limits current if it
sees a ground or short circuit.

Makes troubleshooting tough sometimes, too. I had a side marker light out. I
test the bulb with a meter. Open circuit. For grins I checked the socket for
power with the light switch on. Nothing.

Further studying revealed that if there’s no load, the “electronic fuse” won’t
pass power to the circuit.

Put a new 5W bulb in and it worked.

lighter out, push it down, nothing happens. So I pry it out, put in the

So I pop the hood, find the fuse box and there are only a few small fuses in there and
some relays and a 50A or 2 and no chart of anything. WTF? So then I download the manual
(she does not leave it in the car for some reason) and it shows there are 3 (!!!) fuse
boxes scattered around the car, one in the side of the dash by the pass door and another
under the back seat. I try to find the one by the door, there is none there. WTF??? So
the manual says The fuse allocation chart is located under cover of the rear

TD has a nice printed chart under the fuse box cover! I had to cut a little tab on the
carpet cover too to get it lifted up, so I guess no one has ever been in that fuse box.

Have the Germans completely lost it? (Or maybe the Alabama assembly workers?)
Neither of the boxes has a fuse chart, how the hell are you supposed to figure
out what fuse might need to be changed? Good news is the fuses seem to be the
newer flat things, I have a ton of those around but no idea which one to pull.

ML. There is a ciggy lighter in the front console, and the manual shows
either/both a 12V socket there, but hers only has the ciggy lighter. I
try to get the lighter out, push it down, nothing happens. So I pry it
out, put in the charger, no juice.

So I pop the hood, find the fuse box and there are only a few small
fuses in there and some relays and a 50A or 2 and no chart of anything.
WTF? So then I download the manual (she does not leave it in the car
for some reason) and it shows there are 3 (!!!) fuse boxes scattered
around the car, one in the side of the dash by the pass door and another
under the back seat. I try to find the one by the door, there is none
there. WTF??? So the manual says The fuse allocation chart is located
under cover of the rear one. So I open that one up, it has some fuses
in it too, but no chart. WTF The 79 TD has a nice printed chart
under the fuse box cover! I had to cut a little tab on the carpet cover
too to get it lifted up, so I guess no one has ever been in that fuse box.

Have the Germans completely lost it? (Or maybe the Alabama assembly
workers?) Neither of the boxes has a fuse chart, how the hell are you
supposed to figure out what fuse might need to be changed? Good news is
the fuses seem to be the newer flat things, I have a ton of those around
but no idea which one to pull.

Off to the tubes to try to find a fuse chart

I have a serious question here, Andy is the just the guy to help me out.

Hillary! very clearly has some huge baggage she is dragging around, most
recently this whole business with the personal unsecured email server,
running national-sensitive stuff through it, lying about it, not turning
over all the stuff that has been subpoenaed, using employees of her
foundation to run intel operations, stonewalling Congress, taking huge
amounts of foreign money into the foundation while SoS and dealing with
issues related to those donations, ... the list goes on.

Are Hillary! supporters really blind to all of this, or does it not
matter, or do they think that none of this is real or has any relevance
to the assumption that it is Her Turn?

I really want to know this. I don't want partisan bashing of her or any
other candidate, I truly want to know if the HRC supporters have
explanations for all this that makes it irrelevant to her candidacy. I
have friends/acquaintances who really see nothing here to be concerned
about, but can't articulate any reasons. It's like they just ignore it,
or don't see it, or something, when clearly it is out there and fairly
important stuff.

Re: [MBZ] Why diesel prices are plummeting

2015-07-30 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
There was an article in the WSJ a coupla days ago about gasoline and
diesel inventories, and diesel is way high due to it being a byproduct
of gasoline refining, and gasoline is being refined at a high rate,
apparently due to some refineries having recently come on line in the
Middle East. (It wasn't clear where all the gasoline was going, or if
it was going, or the stuff was just being refined to keep up with the
petroleum that is being pumped) The stuff seems to be building up
everywhere and coupled with high inventories and weak demand prices are
expected to remain quite low for some time. And now the Iranium supplies
will be hitting the world market so expect further price declines.

I have been rejected for a few days now, it looks like I am once again
part of the cabal. I'm wondering my original email provider has gone
wonky, or if it and okiebenz are having a spat.

Mary Edith Reiff hammered that Latin into me, made me read the Virge in
Latina, and that is where I remember it from. The Romans and the Greeks
often had different views on godly and underworldly matters, and various
other subjects, and it continues even now.

Uh, Charon ferried people across Acheron, not Styx, I believe.

James B Sinatra had a 250SE in this color. The photos of the couple
for sale are not the correct color for DB387.

I got to drive around Sinatra's car and I loved the huge sunroof and
the performance. The color was nice too.

Good catch on the fake, andrew.

losened then you can go at them with other stuff.

cups of acetone. Maybe not enough - but I'm cheap!

If you can get the chain out of the come-along the best way
to clean it of rust is to put it into a small electric
cement mixer along with a couple of shovels of sand. Worked
for me a couple of times now. Soaking it in oil doesn't
really get any rust off.

The chain on this is a roller drive-type chain. Think
bicycle or motorcycle - but _big_. It is only slightly
rusty. At one end of the chain I use ATF and some movement
and got the chain flexing well. My objective is to get oil
into the joints so they will move - probably will require
some elbow grease.

I have disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated the drive unit
and the block. Once the chain is flexing well it should be
fully operational. I don't know what I'm going to do with
the monster then.

It's a Yale PC series roller chain lever hoist. The roller
chain is not very flexible side-to-side, but super strong and
long lasting. Though it's rated for 6000 lb [2700 kg], it
sure looks like it could lift triple that.

The pictures are crummy, but kinda mine looks kinda like this listing.
