Re: [MBZ] For y'all trekkies
I'm going to become a bundler for Hilz and start a solar company to put clean green power in Cuber. I'll make billion$! Of course I will never install a single solar panel, but I will get billion$ because of my /good intentions/. I'll have some pretty heavy overhead, will have to build an office, villas for the help (and me too), buy a G5 to fly back and forth, outfit the whole deal in an appropriate fashion, will need some boats and nice G63's and helicopters to do exploring of sites, and that will all have to come first. I'll model the effort on the Clinton Fam Foundation efforts in Haiti, set up the Thomas Family Foundation, hire my kid for $350k/yr, get her a staff of 6 or so to deal with details while I set policy and such. [MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet
Or, web cam and existing fone or ipad... I have an older wifi cam and wanted to see if I could get it working with a cheap tablet of some sort as a remote viewer. The cam had some sort of windows software that I never used, but I could see it with VLC on my Mac after putting in some sort of weird script, but a VLC upgrade would not see it any more. I found an earlier version and installed that and it worked again, but then I got a new router with my Uverse install, and it wouldn't see it anymore though it was still visible on the network. I sorta gave up on fooling with it at that point. Now I am wondering if I could use a cheap tablet as a monitor for it, somehow. I have an old Android phone and an old ifone too, there is a VLC app for the phones and ipad, so I am wondering if that might work somehow. If I could get it working then I could buy one of those $50 tablets and have a continuous monitor. THere might be some other apps too, I have not looked into it. The last coupla days I have popped several squirrels that were getting all the squirrel seed my wife puts out for the birds. I think I got 5 or 6, some of them ran off after getting hit but I think they probably did not live long. There are 2 or 3 more around that ran off before I could get them. They learn pretty quickly but I think this must have been a recent wave as they were not yet afraid of me or the pellet gun. If I got most of them there might be more moving in to fill the niche. I zeroed in the scope of the pellet gun and put some bike lube in the barrel, that thing cracks like a .22 now when I fire it, and I can put a group into a quarter-sized circle at 50ft or so. I got one squirrel that was way up in a tree maybe 30ft or so, knocked it out and it thunked but got up and ran off. Another one made it up about that high before succumbing and dropped down. I leave them out there, most of them disappear over night, I guess raccoons or possums or something gets them. --R On 7/2/15 1:48 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: That reminds me, I need to glue some walnuts onto my chipmunk traps. I popped another one yesterday, there appears to be only one more in the immediate vicinity but it has developed the Pavlov Pellet Gun conditioning so it runs when I go outside now. When the ospreys are flying around and screeching the tree rat population gets mighty scarce too. One day a year or two ago we were sitting on the front porch and there were some squirrels around, all the sudden a red-tailed hawk flies by about 3 feet away from us, right along the porch rail, I think it was looking for one of the rats. They scattered REAL fast! I went out yesterday morning before sunrise and saw the dad out hunting. I'm suspecting that the need to feed several hungry chicks has put a serious damper on the local tree rat population. They used to be quite active in the woods behind my house, and now I neither see or hear much of them at all. Nice to have the hawks setting up housekeeping in the neighborhood. Ceramic will keep your wheels cleaner. I've had very good luck with cheap pads from oreely. They do make your wheels dirty. I just clean and paint the wheels every few years with a rattlecan. Unless you are driving on a race track, the cheap (organic) pads work very well. If you plan to drag the brakes all the way down a mountain, they may fade, but I never have any problem. Ceramic on the dogde van: The anti skid accelerometer has been fubar mostly since we got the van. Most of the time the system turns itself off, but sometimes the LF brake drags. this ruins the discs and pads. About 18 months ago I put new pads and rotors on; did the ceramic pad breakin stuff; and they were wonderful. Unfortunately, i never figured out how to snip the purple wire somewhere buried under the console that is said to disable the antiskid system. So the new rotors and pads are ruined. I recently dug in to the console innards and found the accelerometer. I never found the purple wire, but I unplugged the accelerometer, with the same effect. Anti skid is now dead. There are 2 fuses you can pull to disable, but it also kills the speedometer, odometer and some other somewhat necessary systems. This is all not really the fault of ceramic pads, but i don't think the cheap pads would cause the rotor warping like these did. My buddy and his wife were riding their bikes on the beach when they were here a few weeks ago, saw Mrs. B jogging on the beach early Sunday morning. She had a coupla SS guys trailing along and the Coasties had a dinghy following off the beach, and there was a cutter a bit further off shore. I was riding my bike the afternoon they came, bunch of cops came flying past me in the road and closed it down, I rode on to the roundabout and stopped next to one of the deputies and was chatting with him, the motorcade came by a few minutes later. The deputy seemed rather bored with the whole matter and seemed to rather be doing something else. I got a bunch of pics. It was actually fairly low-key, only 6 or 8 vehicles aside from ever how many cops. It always buggers up the (one) road coming out this way as they have sort of a rolling blockade that blocks off other roads and driveways and such for 10 or 15 minutes. I have no idea why they don't just fly him out in a helo from the airport and dispense with all the drama but I guess that would be more involved. He occasionally comes to the little shopping center down the road for an ice cream or whatever, usually fairly low-key. Hobbled across hall into kitchen, looked out and realized that neighbors still had power. Noticed stove clock still on and refrigerator running and thought, Hey, what's this? We still have some power. Flipped kitchen light, lights came on; back to hall, flipped switch - no light; flipped switch for second floor landing; light came on. So I found the fuse chart in a paper that was folded up and tucked in the fuse box, it has the map for all the boxes in Deutsche, Anglis, and some other language. Found the ciggy lighter fuse, and of course there are no spare fuses and no fuse puller thingie. Had a 15A fuse in my toolbox so popped the old one out, it was fried, popped the new one in, now there is juice to the ciggy lighter phone charger thingie. Mama will be happy now. Unclear why she did not mention it to the dealer when she took the vehicle in for the A or B service or whatever it was on Friday week ago. Sigh. The ones in the car are marked S as in 15S, is S the German for A? Did they have their own guy named Schultz or something who discovered current flow, and this is some sort of snub to M. Ampere? (Hey, Dieter, throw me a 15 Schultz fuse in there willya?) I should probably go buy a coupla boxes of fuses and a little puller thingie to put in there so next time it blows I can tell her how to CHANGE YOUR FUSES! BTW the service consisted mostly of a 10k mile checkup and filters (engine and cabin) change, maybe oil too I forgot to notice, which according to the dealer guy would have been like $900 but it was covered under the CPO or warranty we got or something. Another one is included, so after another 20k miles I guess I am going to have to do all that stuff (and buy myself a good bottle or 3 of whisky). She was ragging about why it is so expensive to do that stuff. I tried to explain but I was having a hard time convincing myself. Will the DAS system cover this 2012 ML? Or is there something else like it? I should look into that if I am going to have to maintain this thing myself. I'm wondering too if the main computer in the thing talks to all that stuff and there might be some kind of special codes to get into it? I found some pdfs of the charts for the 4(!!!) fuse boxes that some MB tech posted, including a vid that shows where the pass side panel is (not where the manual says it is). And some electrical items have “electronic fuses” as MB calls them. It’s a fancy name for saying that they’re using an SCR to control a circuit, and it limits current if it sees a ground or short circuit. Makes troubleshooting tough sometimes, too. I had a side marker light out. I test the bulb with a meter. Open circuit. For grins I checked the socket for power with the light switch on. Nothing. Further studying revealed that if there’s no load, the “electronic fuse” won’t pass power to the circuit. Put a new 5W bulb in and it worked. I have a serious question here, Andy is the just the guy to help me out. Hillary! very clearly has some huge baggage she is dragging around, most recently this whole business with the personal unsecured email server, running national-sensitive stuff through it, lying about it, not turning over all the stuff that has been subpoenaed, using employees of her foundation to run intel operations, stonewalling Congress, taking huge amounts of foreign money into the foundation while SoS and dealing with issues related to those donations, ... the list goes on. Are Hillary! supporters really blind to all of this, or does it not matter, or do they think that none of this is real or has any relevance to the assumption that it is Her Turn? I really want to know this. I don't want partisan bashing of her or any other candidate, I truly want to know if the HRC supporters have explanations for all this that makes it irrelevant to her candidacy. I have friends/acquaintances who really see nothing here to be concerned about, but can't articulate any reasons. There was an article in the WSJ a coupla days ago about gasoline and diesel inventories, and diesel is way high due to it being a byproduct of gasoline refining, and gasoline is being refined at a high rate, apparently due to some refineries having recently come on line in the Middle East. (It wasn't clear where all the gasoline was going, or if it was going, or the stuff was just being refined to keep up with the petroleum that is being pumped) The stuff seems to be building up everywhere and coupled with high inventories and weak demand prices are expected to remain quite low for some time. Re: [MBZ] OT: Kay and Steele sketch spoofing American values
I knew a guy about 20 years ago who was going to get some surplus RPVs from A Government Agency and set up cell phone repeaters on them to provide service in Africa and other infrastructure-challenged areas. These things could stay up a week or two, orbiting at 70k ft+, above most of the weather (you can figure out what their mission was for The Government Agency). Not sure whatever became of it, but he had run the numbers and it looked pretty good. --R On 7/30/15 3:00 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: Speaking of drones: MENLO PARK, California (AP) — Facebook says it will begin test flights later this year of a solar-powered drone with the wingspan of a Boeing 737, the next stage of its campaign to deliver Internet service to remote parts of the world. Engineers at the giant social network say they've built a drone with a 140-foot wingspan that weighs less than 1,000 pounds. It will use lasers to send Internet signals to stations on the ground. The project is part of a broader effort by Facebook that also contemplates using satellites and other high-tech gear to deliver Internet connectivity to hundreds of millions of people living in regions too remote for conventional service. Facebook rival Google is experimenting with high-altitude balloons and satellites in a program that has similar goals. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

MG wrote: If you can get the chain out of the come-along the best way to clean it of rust is to put it into a small electric cement mixer along with a couple of shovels of sand. Worked for me a couple of times now. Soaking it in oil doesn't really get any rust off. The chain on this is a roller drive-type chain. Think bicycle or motorcycle - but _big_. It is only slightly rusty. At one end of the chain I use ATF and some movement and got the chain flexing well. My objective is to get oil into the joints so they will move - probably will require some elbow grease. I have disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated the drive unit and the block. Once the chain is flexing well it should be fully operational. I don't know what I'm going to do with the monster then. It's a Yale PC series roller chain lever hoist. The roller chain is not very flexible side-to-side, but super strong and long lasting. Though it's rated for 6000 lb [2700 kg], it sure looks like it could lift triple that. The pictures are crummy, but kinda mine looks kinda like this listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yale-3-4-ton-Pul-Lift-Lever-Hoist-PL46C-5-ft-chain-/371386811879 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
