Howto save a computed track

2018-08-13 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Computing long distance tracks take quite some time.
Is it possible to save such a track for later usage?
If this isn't possible, yet,
please take this as a feature request.

Re: gpx recording stops when screen switched off in new versions

2019-04-02 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Have you checked that OSMAND is excepted from any battery saving mode?
Have you Greenify installed?
Anyway, I prefer a different solution. I'm using "GPS Logger" which drains
less battery. You can then copy the track saved by GPS Logger to the folder
/files/tracks by using any file manager (like FX).

Re: showing routes driven on a several day trip

2019-04-03 Thread Helmut Jarausch
I prefer using the Android app "GPS Logger" which drains less battery.
Furthermore you can store waypoints with a meaningful name at any time.
You can edit these tracks with the app "GPS Track Editor" and view them
with the app "GPX Viewer".
You can then copy these GPX files into the OSMAND folder
net.osmand.plus/files/tracks using any file manager like FX.
Tracks in that folder can be displayed (and followed) in OSMAND.

Re: Does the paid version OsmAnd+ on Google Play have contours?

2019-01-28 Thread Helmut Jarausch
For such an extremely useful app you just pay a few euros or dollars, and
that just once! Each month really time consuming calculations have to be
done to transform the OSM maps into a format that can be used by OSMAND.
And it's not just me who downloads several GB each month when updating my
maps, and servers for such a huge amount of data are not cheap.
I have paid MUCH MORE money for my Garmin device (years ago) and even
after dozens of firmware updates it doesn't work flawlessly.
Can you image how it feels if you are in an unknown city and your device
hangs and has to restarted by a complicate procedure which takes about 20
minutes?
Have you ever made a bug report to companies like Garmin which has been
resolved in a timely manner?
I have never had such an experience with OSMAND!
So, I am very grateful to the developers of OSMAND!!!

Re: Is it possible to import a list of POI from a spreadsheet?

2019-05-27 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi, you don't need to programme anything. You can transfer the file
favourites.gpx from your mobile
(/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files/favourites.gpx) to your PC.
There you can use a text editor (or spreadsheet software) to generate the
entries mentioned in my previous mail. Again, using a text editor you can
add (all of) your entries before the last line (containing ).
Then copy this modified file to your mobile at the very same place where
got it from. The term has to be replaced by either your internal
or external SD card depending on where OSMAND has stored this file and
maps, etc.

two contour lines updates fail to load

2019-08-10 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Currently I have the same problem with Italy/Trentino.
It looks like an incompatiblity between the map and the contour lines.
If I delete the map I can update the contour lines. But then I cannot install
an up-to-date map. If I then remove the contour lines I can install an
up-to-date map for that region.
I don't know if this is an OSMAnd or an OSM problem?

Re: Difficulty importing GPX file

2019-09-03 Thread Helmut Jarausch
If you have difficulties with changing anything (renaming or replacing a
file) somewhere on the external SD-card that hasn't anything to do with
OSMAnd.
You might try a different file manager like FX or Total Commander on your
Android device. I have never had any problems that OSMAnd uses this new
version of favourites.xml nearly immediately after restarting OSMAnd. You
might try to clear the cache if OSMAnd before starting it.
Helmut
P.S. I wish OSMAnd would allow several files of favourites, e.g. in a
dedicated subfolder though.

Favorites : edit coordinates ?

2019-08-21 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi,
I haven't found a way to edit (change) the coordinates of a saved favorite.
Typical application:
Sometimes OSMAnd doesn't know the location of an (exact) address.
Having found that by Google Maps I'd like to change the stored coordinates.
Is this possible?

I know a workaround is to find the coordinates and save the location as a
new favorite.

Many thanks for a hint,
Helmut

It does work just fine!
Congratulations and many, many thanks to the developers.
I have just one question about it.
In settings -> Navigation -> walking(e.g.)-> activate screen/time
what is the meaning of 'never'?
It looks like this means 'do not turn the screen off at all'
At least, when my phone was connected to the power supply in my car, the
screen stayed on all the time with this setting.
Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks, Helmut

Re: Using Google maps to connect to a location in, 'Osmand'

2019-12-12 Thread Helmut Jarausch
The following works:
In Google maps right click on the location. A pull down menu appears.
Click on "what is here"
Google displays the coordinates at the bottom of the page.
Now in OSMAND enter
Search, address, coordinates and enter these values there. You may safe the
point as a favorite.

Re: Navigation profiles not working?

2019-10-27 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Harry, thank you very much for your detailed description. It took some time
to understand the mechanism. And, as always, the option to select this new
routing profile was a bit hidden.
One last question: is it even possible to assign a new icon to my new
profile.
Currently, both the standard car profile and my Car15 profile use the "car
icon" and can't be distinguished at first glance.
Thanks again,
Helmut

Strange Routing

2019-11-01 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi, I don't understand the routing of OSMAnd. I have the following
situation:

D x I

 O

I want to drive from O via I to D.
There is a highway connecting D, x and I.
OSMAnd suggests to drive from O to x to I (and back to x and D)
This takes 2 hours and 2 minutes.
Inserting an additional intermediate point on a country road between O and
I gives a much shorter route of only 1 hour and 45 minutes.
This is all with the standard car routing.
Can anybody understand OSMAnds routing here.
I have seen the car profile has "prefer highways" option which can't be
turned off.
How to teach OSMAnd to calculate the shortest (w.r.t time) route?
Many thanks for a hint
Helmut

If someone wants to try it himself here are the coordinates
D : 50.80729° N, 6.17105° E
I : 51.22824° N, 7.20733° E
O : 51.16853° N, 7.08233° E
additional intermediate point : 51.20348° N, 7.16982° E
One needs the map of Germany (Nordrhein-Westfalen)

Re: Route calculation never comes to end

2019-12-20 Thread Helmut Jarausch
I can confirm that problem.
I've tried "Magic Earth" which uses OSM maps, as well. It has no problems
computing the route.
When going by car I do prefer Magic Earth since it uses very few bandwidth
and the traffic information is in real time and extremely precise. It
reroutes automatically if the planned route is blocked or has a very long
delay.

Re: Route planning on PC, download whole country maps, maximum number of waypoints

2020-02-24 Thread Helmut Jarausch
You can use any software which can create a list of waypoints which can be
exported - preferably as GPX file.
This file can be put onto your mobile, then you can navigate along this GPX
track.
If you have multiple intermediate points the computation of a route doesn't
pose any problems.
I have had problems only when the distance between two adjacent stops is
500 km or more.
The paid version can download as many maps as your mobile can store.
For all of Germany plus Denmark you will probably need about 6 Gb storage.
If your mobile can use an external SD card you have no problems. I've just
bought a very good and fast card with a capacity of 128 Gb for about 20
Euro.
For navigating by car I use Magic Earth in addition since it monitors
traffic jams in real time and changes your route accordingly. Unfortunately
this feature won't ever come to OSMAnd since companies have to pay for that.
I have looked at several apps for Android and I have selected those two
apps.

But AFAIK it's difficult to access a (small) part of a compressed file
without decompressing the whole file first.

Re: SD Card question

2020-02-14 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Sometimes one has to reboot the device to see the change.
If you have a file manager installed (I like Totalcomander or MiXplorer
best)
go to /Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files
There you see the maps.

Re: Video tutorial: using the profiles

2020-03-11 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Here is a problem which I can't solve and which is related to straight line
navigation.
You notice a distant fire and you want to find where it is located.
On my old Garmin device there is a feature called Sight'N Go.
One aims at the distant object and presses Enter. Then one can create a
distant way point by specifying an approximate distance.
This can be used to solve my problem as follows:
Do Sight'N Go from two positions (P1 and P2) which are sufficiently apart
from each other. This gives the two distant way points D1 and D2.
With these data one creates a piecewise straight route connecting
P1 - > D1 - > D2 - > P2
This route intersects itself at the position of the fire. (at least if the
estimated distances of D1 and D2 are greater than the distance of the fire)
Sorry if this is too offtopic,
Helmut

It works just fine on my Android phone.
One of my devices has a compass.
On my device without compass I have two choices
North upand
direction up
On the device with a compass there is a third possibility where the map is

No insult intended :
OSMAnd is not a company but a user driven project. So, it's up to all of us
to improve it. If somebody comes up with the implementation of a better
routing algorithm l am sure this will get into OSMAnd very soon.

If that were so simple, there would the following extremely fast overall
algorithm:
Select a point in the "middle" and solve the two problems separately.

Re: Osmand routing calculation is very slow for long distance for many years

With OSMAnds (relatively) new feature to turn the screen on (for a few
seconds only) when there is a bifurcation ahead, I have observed quite
moderate battery consumption - about a few percents per hour.

Re: Galaxy S10 Plus - maps interrupted by magnet on car mount

2020-03-25 Thread Helmut Jarausch
I had to buy one of the rare covers fot my mobile exact for that reason.
Without use of the magnetic sensor one looses the possibility to see the
the direction when one is not moving (fast enough)
For physical reasons there is no way around removing all magnets nearby.
So, if you want to see where to turn when you are at a traffic light, you
have to use a different car mount.

Re: Osmand routing calculation is very slow for long distance for many years

2020-03-25 Thread Helmut Jarausch
@Lodro
PLEASE STOP to insult anybody on this forum.
I don't understand the fuss about this problem.
I have no problems on my 5 years old mobile.
For long distance calculations I set one or two intermediate points to
circumvent the problem.
Please give citations on better routing algorithms which are suitable for
devices with low memory and restricted CPU power. If there is such an
algorithm we should all try to implement it and send it to the developers
of OSMAnd.
When hiking I am not aware of any other offline routing app with such
detailed maps.
And installing yet another app requires additional storage on the SD card.

So, please stay constructive,
Helmut

Re: Voice??

2020-03-18 Thread Helmut Jarausch
You could try the following
Go to the menu / extensions / OSMAnd-development
Tap on the 3 vertical dots and go to settings. There scroll down to "test
voice announcements"
It displays a list of available languages.
Tap on the desired language.
You get a list announcements in English. Tap on one and you should here the
message in your language.
I once had a similar problem.
I uninstalled my language and reinstalled it again. This fixed the problem.

Re: Measure distance widget

2020-10-17 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Measuring beeline distances hasn't got more complicated. But it has very
useful new features. You can measure distances along a route passing
through given points - and that for different profiles. Furthermore it has
grown into a track editor.
IMHO it has got much more useful.
Thanks to the developers,

Multiple Maps for a location

2020-08-16 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Sorry, if this is a dump question - I haven't found an answer by googling.
I have downloaded a map for a small region from BBBike.org.
This map covers the same region as one of OSMAnd's official maps.
When I am at a location which is present in both maps, which map will be
displayed?
How can I change the 'priority' of maps.
Many thanks for a hint

I think I'm missing much more.
I have copied the, say, New.obf file to OSMAnd's folder. It is visible

So, what do I have to do after the new .obf is copied into place.

Re: voice guidance is enabled, but no voice

2020-12-17 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Sorry, I can't help with an IPhone.
But there must be something similar to what there is on my Android phone

Under settings
Download maps
and near the end an entry called
Voice prompts (TTS, preferred)
If you tap on this you see a (long) list of possible languages.
On the right of an installed language there are three vertical dots.
If you tap on these there is an option to remove this language package.
After that you can (re-) install it.

I don't know if there is a development plugin on an IPhone to test voices.
Hopefully someone reading mailing list owns an IPhone and can help with this

Region containing a city - how to find out

2021-07-06 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi,
the map of many countries is divided into several regions.
Is there an easy way to find out which region contains a given city?
E.g., which map of Germany contains the city Koblenz?
Many thanks for a hint,
Helmut

You are correct, that is not OK. However your anger is being directed
at the wrong entity. OSMAnd is not "including Google spy software".
OSMAnd is simply playing withing the rather strict rules set out by
 Google.

Google has been restricting access to everything on Android, and
funneling everything, more and more, through Google Play Services with
each update they make to Android. And access to GPS data is but one of
the data sets that Google has been restricting in this way on Android.
This is the reason for the existance of the microG project
(https://microg.org/), an attempt to provide an alternative access
point for those same API's but without including the google spy machine
 in the process.

It is not OSMAnd's fault that in order to run on a standard Android
base (which is what, but for the select few, all Android phones run)
that Google requires that they make use of the google play services
component. Google has forced that upon them. You should direct your
anger at Google, not at OSMAnd.

Install Totalcommander on both devices.
Then copy the folder /Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files
from one device to the other device using copy by WLAN. Totalcommander can
even establish a WLAN hotspot which is also the fastest way to the files
