The problem with 4/3rds is that the crop is so extreme that using
non-telephoto lenses via adaptors is an exercise in
 frustration. Canon
offers you full-frame and a more reasonable crop (1.3x or
 1.6x) that at
least leave your wide angles semi-wide.

That would make sense: I think sealed lenses only make sense if they are
focussing and zooming internally. Otherwise you pump too much air and

I wonder if the ILM contacts are switched other than with the on/off switch?
It would make sense to not have constantly live power contacts hanging about,
just in case someone manages to short them. Once a suitable lens is attached
it might inform the body to turn on the contacts. A PZ lens (probably) would
not do that.

you'll be using a K10D, you may need a card reader that will work with
these larger, newer speced cards. Right now, the only reader that I know

Vertical orientation sensor.

Sure it's a plus, but to be honest I wish I could switch it off on the
1D. There are times when I would like to see the pic on the LCD on the
back in 'full frame' view, instead of rotated to the height of the
shortest dimension (for framing assessment etc). Ideally, it would mark
the pic as being rotated which ever way, but display in the camera as

I hadn't thought of that issue. I certainly wouldn't want my
autorotation to affect how the camera displays images on its LCD. I just
want it in the EXIF and to have software like Photoshop and Bridge
automatically recognize it.

That's been a gripe of mine with the -DS (that I only remember

the SR sensors to detect orientation, so it's a freebie.

So i thing better leave just info in EXIF - not allow to affect how it

David,
I see no real need for cropping. If anything, I might try tightening it
into a square, just to take a look.
Think I'd clone/darken lower left corner and, maybe, lighten the buds.
They really don't contribute to the image.
BTW, I like it.

Never seen the point of it, personally. It only takes me a few
seconds to rotate several hundred exposures en masse in Bridge, or a

I think they are - the DS/DL series did very well, and have added a number
of converts, the K100D is selling like crazy and is receiving good media
coverage and good reviews, and the K10D offers a lot for the money and some
innovative features, and, apart from this list, is generating a lot of good
buzz. The only down side - if you can call it that - is that the world of
the DSLR changes rapidly, and it may be hard for Pentax to keep up with
Canon, or even Nikon. Still, I think those who are not in need of the
latest and greatest fluff offerings, will be quite satisfied with Pentax
for some time.

I cannot help but wonder if there will be a K1D ...

Maybe you need a new computer. The real question might be how much larger
would the K10D be if it used CF cards. You can't really compare the D and
the K10D as they have a different set of features and design. Or, another
way of looking at it might be to consider how much smaller the D would be
if it used an SD card.

You say the decision to use SD cards in the K10D is 98% marketing. Where
did you get that figure? I suspect you just made it up or pulled it from
thin air.

Handheld's are almost completely SD at this point, laptops typically
offer SD only if they don't offer a full set of options. And my point
was that SD+CF would make a larger camera, not just CF, and that point
is undisputable. Simple physical size of the slots make 2 notably larger
than either one.

That is indeed a a K 50/1.2, and it is an excellent price. However, be adviced

We have the Optio 550. We were happy with it, but when our son entered the
picture it was just too long a lag between pushing the shutter release and
taking the picture. My wife picked up a Canon 30D this summer and absolutely
loves it. Her old SLR is a Canon A2 so it was a no brainer for her. I have to
admit, the 30D is a very nice camera.
That said, she was impressed with the stats in the Pentax K10D. The internal
shake reduction and sensor dust cleaning impressed her, especially in a sub
$1000 camera body.
Just like you I am glad I have waited for a Prosumer body from Pentax. I look
forward to hearing from those early adopters on the list about how the camera
performs.

Really nice!

I will definitely get one. It has everything I have been looking for
(well, except full frame, but that's another story) and all my
fantastic A* lenses will work nicely.

I've been very close to jumping the ship many times but I am glad I
waited (all
these years, heh). Why I did I stay so long? I have been shooting
pictures, film
or digital, well, they are just different kind of tools for the job.
Lately I
have been just waiting in silence :-) . The Optio 555 we have has been
fun
though!

Looking forward for the ultrasonic motor lenses as well (I have only one
AF lens right now, the FA 100/2.8 macro) so I can finally go AF.

The weather sealing of the body sounds great too. The LX has it (I have
two
of those) and while none of the current Pentax lenses have sealing,
there has
never been a problem with my lenses. The body (especially DSLR) has a
lot more
sensitive components than any (mechanical) lens so... I see no problem.
If the
new lenses have sealing and USM, well, just great!

My daughter is close to 1 and 1/2 years and the 555 is getting way too
slow to
get any good images of her... The 10D fits in just nicely.

IMO the only dimension of the camera in which you save space in replacing

I hope so, given this curious extract from the Pentax jp DSLR web site:

Most digital SLRs of today use exclusive, rechargeable batteries.
PENTAX, however, strongly believes in AA-size battery compatibility
for two important reasons: Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, which are not
only widely available in the market, but also assure stable
performance and an extended operation time, can be used; and
compatible AA-size batteries are easy to find almost anywhere in the

 From what I've seen, I'd say that the 50mm f/1.4 lenses (A, F and
FA) outperform the K50/1.2, particularly wide open, but that some
users like the K50/1.2's rendering qualities. For that price, if it's

at least. You can likely re-sell it if you are not satisfied for the

For myself, I had several 50s and have settled on the FA50/1.4 as the
one I kept. I prefer to have at least an A series lens so as to use
all the body's exposure modes and decided that AF was an option that
posed advantages as well.

Looks like they should be changeable with Aas or at least CR-V3s -
 yah if they are!!

It's hard to tell the size, but the battery pack looks *very*
similar to the one used in Canon cameras (?511? ?512?). Now
that would be interesting - being able to share across brands!

Re: advice regarding lens

2006-09-13 Thread Shel Belinkoff
I have a K50/1.2, and while the results aren't as crisp at wider apertures
as my A50/1.4, I still like the lens quite a bit. Focussing ability in low
light is, of course, a joy.
I have numerous iterations of K-mount 50mm lenses, and they all offer some
qualities that are useful. You can't have enough fifties ;-))

  From what I've seen, I'd say that the 50mm f/1.4 lenses (A, F and
FA) outperform the K50/1.2, particularly wide open, but that some
users like the K50/1.2's rendering qualities. For that price, if it's
in good condition, it's certainly worth buying and experimenting with
at least. You can likely re-sell it if you are not satisfied for the
 same or more money.

For myself, I had several 50s and have settled on the FA50/1.4 as the
one I kept. I prefer to have at least an A series lens so as to use
all the body's exposure modes and decided that AF was an option that
 posed advantages as well.

 Shel

I don't anticipate one. While the K10D doesn't quite come up to my
hopes as far as frame rate and flash sync speed are concerned, it's
good enough for well over 99% of my scenarios. And even there the
frame rate will probably get updated in a K10Dn/K20D in a year or two.

So - what would be added in a K1D? Full frame? Aperture simulator?
If you ask me, neither of those will ever show up in a K-mount DSLR.

Hmm, I've never thought of the 10D, which is on the smaller side of
average for a midrange body, as an 'already huge and heavy body'. I'll
freely admit though that Canon's add-on grips are massive, at least the
digital ones (the Elan 7N's grip is tiny and svelte, ironic in that it's
essentially the same body as the 10D).

I used Bruce's D for a day, and while I'd probably not use the K10D with a
grip, I may. The grip was really helpful shooting verticals. For someone
who is shooting a lot in portrait mode, I'd suggest at least giving the
grip a try.
