Re: [Phono-L] "Sprung" Platter
I have a VV 1-1, and here is how I removed the turntable. I would saturate the spindle with either penetrating oil, liquid wrench or Kroil. Let the oil seep into the spindle and the turntable. After a few hours, put a couple of small pry bars underneath the turn table. Do not force this Take a standard hammer and lightly tap the spindle. The turn table should pop off. You might have to use the oil in more than one application. The important thing is to be very gentle. These were very cheaply made machines, and delicate. This method will work on other machines with stuck turn tables.Harvey Kravitz From: John Selph via Phono-LTo: phono-l@oldcrank.org Cc: John Selph Sent: Thursday, December 8, 2016 3:15 PM Subject: [Phono-L] "Sprung" Platter Anyone know of a way to repair a “sprung” platter? It sounded fine from the time I got it on ebay, but the stem broke free from the stylus bar assembly, and it turned out it had been repaired before (badly). Steve recognized the reproducer by its number 9he told me he records serial numbered reproducers that appear on ebay) and it had been auctioned by a man who told Steve that he had completely rebuilt it. Whoever bought it from him put it back on ebay 6 months later, which is when I bought it. I suspect they did the bad repair and were trying to get rid of it. Steve took a new stem made by (Is it public knowledge, Steve?) which is just like the original, and made the repair, which involved much more than just gluing it in. He also salvaged the original indicator knob and pointer from my original O and applied that to it! He polished the diaphragm, which gleams like new, and made it airtight, which it was not before. The reproducer sounds excellent, works just like new. Thanks Steve, for another high quality repair. I give you 5 stars! Hello all realize that I have not posted on my latest find. I saw an ad for a local state sale that included a Victrola. I checked out the photo and I knew it as not a common one. It was not the classic Victrola with the deeply carved corners and nickel lating. It had more strict, straight lines and no curves. The veneer n the front was in a V shaped grain pattern, and the cabinet on the hole looked almost more like a British made cabinet. called the sale coordinator to ask the price, and she said she would have it ater in that same day. She never called back, and I left messages to no vail. So last Sunday morning (10/5) I drove the hour to Simi Valley, where the ale was taking place. My partner and I joined a line of about 30 people and aited to get in. When they opened the house and garage doors, I saw it at the ack of the garage. They were only letting 25 people at a time in, and luckily I as number 25. I went in and checked it out, and then had my partner wait with t while I went into the house to find the coordinator and ask price. While in he house I spotted another high profile collector and my heart sank. I thought would have to go home empty handed. He greeted me, and told me that the price as too retail for him (he purchases for resale) and my hope was restored! I ound the coordinator and asked the price. She told me, and keeping in mind that he said the house was sold and everything had to go that day, I counter offered ith the highest figure I could pay (which was $200 less than the asking rice). She countered with a figure that was $50 higher than my offer, and I ccepted. Luckily my partner had a $20 bill on him or I would not have been ble to buy it!. We loaded it up and made the drive home, very carefully! n to the phonograph - it was a Victrola 350, made in mid 1924 and discontinued n early 1925. It was made to appeal to the more affluent, as its design and old plating indicates, and it came with a full set of albums (missing from this ne). From the Victor Data Book it appears that only 878 were made, with serial umber starting at 501. This example is number 802, indicating that it is the 01st manufactured. It was exciting to hear from Bob Baumbach that he has only een one other of these machines. ere is a link to the photos. ttp://s197.photobucket.com/user/john9ten/library/Victrola%20350 ohn Robles __ hono-L mailing list ttp://phono-l.org ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] Mystery Phono! Vic 3 or Frankenphone?
From what I can see the parts are from a later Victor III. The cabinet looks old and original, but not to a Victor III. Did you take off the turn table to see if there were multiple holes in the motor board? If so, that would mean a swapped motor. If not, the cabinet can be new old stock that was modified by the original owner, a dealer, or a handyman. If there are no extra holes in the cabinet, I would strip and refinish it. It would be a very unique machine. Vic 3 or Frankenphone? Hello Everyone, Last night, Nick an I won an interesting phonograph at a local junk auction. Someone has spray painted the entire cabinet gold...inside and out! The double spring motor looks to be from a Victor III, the turntable and the upper works appear to be from a Victor III and it came with a ID plate (tacked inside the cabinet) that indicates it is indeed a Victor III. It also came with a nice original wood horn. The problem is, we have never seen a Victor cabinet with this design before. After quite a bit of research, we found that the Vic III came in two cabinet types and neither of them match this one, not even close! We own a late style Victor III to compare it to and it is definitely not the same. Strange. The wood under the terrible gold paint looks old and the back bracket looks to be correct. So we need to find out, is this a Frankenphone made up of Victor III parts with a handmade cabinet or a cabinet from a different machine? I was unable to find any cabinets with the kind of moldings this one has. Here are a few links to pictures we just took. [Phono-L] Dating Victor Exhibition Reproducers
A few months ago. I purchased a late model Victor E, S/N 55114. There are only 2 holes in the back of the case, so it was set up as a rear mount. I'm guessing this machine is from 1904-5.The reproducer that came with the machine is S/N 350479. This reproducer is original to the machine. The nickel plating and aging are consistent with the rest of the machine. The needle bar has the triangular hole for fiber needles. My guess that the reproducer was upgraded after 1909 after the triangular fiber needles were introduced. Originally, this reproducer would have had a round hole in the needle bar, and round knurled nuts. This leads to several questions about the Victor Exhibition reproducer. Is there a data chart with breakdowns of S/N's with dates? When did Victor switch to the hex nuts, but still retained the round hole? When did Victor use the spring loaded clamp, similar to the Columbia analyzing reproducer? When did Victor start using suffixes, like A after the S/N on their reproducers? Thanks in advance for any information on this. Harvey Kravitz ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] Proposed Merger of MAPS and APS and successorpublication name
I also disagree with the merger. Each organization is unique in it's own way. Both publications are great. ITG focuses on all phonographs, even ones from the 1950's, and The Sound Box covers the earlier ones. I know Steve already said that. I like ITG because it has different writers than the Sound Box. I like the free want adds, chapter news, how to articles, foreign machines by Anthony Sinclair. and the many other different articles. Both publications do not overlap. I also like the 6 issues as opposed to 4 issues of Sound Box. Even though I'm opposed to the 2 clubs merging, I know that they will judging from the consensus. If they merge, I hope the new publication will have the features of ITG. What ever is best for the hobby. Those of you who belong to the Antique Phonograph Sovciety (formerly known as the Calif. APS) should have received a letter in the mail this week (or will shortly -- mine came yesterday) detailing the proposed merger of the APS with MAPS effective January 1, 2014, (I'm guessing MAPS members will get something soon.). I was told that there was a preliminary meeting of members held at the Union show lat month, though no mention was made in any reports of the show on either of these lists. So the mailing from CAPS was the first formal document I saw. As outlined in the letter, the two organizations are often serving the same group with 160 members (of MAPS' 607 and APS's 400 members belonging to both. Economically it makes sense because postage to mail each society's magazine/journal is the biggest cost. By combining memberships, there would be one dues and this might attract more members. (Side note here: Every person on these newsgroups should belong to at least one of these organizations to support the hobby.). The plan is to take the best of both magazines and combine into one. Currently APS's magazine focuses on pre-electric phonographs and and some recordings -- mostly pre-1910 -- while ITG (MAPs' magazine) covers recording artists as well as reissues of pre-Lp era recordings. (As most of you know, I have contributed a monthly -- now bi-monthly -- column, Anything Phonographic to ITG for over 20 years , not missing one issue yet!). I definitely support the merger if it will mean continuing the great volunteer work done by the Boards and contributors of both organizations. But -- as I wrote in a letter to both boards yesterday -- I feel that the proposal to make the name of the new society's publication -- which would be published quarterly with more yearly pages than either has now -- The Antique Phonograph is not a good move. He was a true gentleman who never let grass grow under his feet, he always kept moving. Words can not describe the shock and heavy hearts that Kathleen and I have loosing a friend such as Bob. Bob and Karen were inseparatable and always had a smile and greeting for anyone that they met. I ask that your thoughts and prayers go out to Karen and their two daughters Kelly and Keri as they attempt to deal with their loss. As many of you know when dealing with their personal lives they are relatively private. At this time, Karen has asked that you contact me directly with any phone calls and any questions and I will try my best to answer. I will also let everyone know when I have an address that they would want cards sent to or hear of what or if they are planning to have a Celebration of Life for Bob . [Phono-L] Rear Mount Talkophone
I have a rear mount Talkophone Arm that I recently purchased and I would like to see how it is mounted to the rear of the machine. This is for a Clarke Model. I don't want to drill holes in the case. Yes, I bought one years ago. It had a very attractive case and just looked cool. I paid about $50.00 for it. Mine, too, sounds halfway decent. I'm sure I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I consider them to be a part of the history of phonographs. Anyone on the list ever knowingly buy a Crap-O-Phone? As in...on purpose? Fess up. :-) Ok. I'll be first. Years ago, I saw an octagonal cased crap-o-phone that I thought was kind of cool looking. Someone from this list or the Phonolist said that they would order a bunch of them and the price was reasonable, as I recall. So I bought one. It had the usual portable motor and turntable, petaled brass horn and the usual cobbled tone arm and reproducer. Not a bad sounding reproducer, either. I still have it and I point out to visitors that these things are still being made, albeit poorly. Anyone else ever buy one and if so, why? You can reply off list if you like. Hit reply and copy and paste my e-mail address. Thanks, Steve The N was made for the Standard E and appeared around serial number 22,000 with a flat top and round weight. The N was used for the Gem E and left over Gem D machines. It was made for the later Amberolas to play the wax amberols. The N-56 was made for the amberola 5 and 6, the regular N was made for the amberola 8 and 10. 1 The first N was the round weight; it came out around serial number 22,000. This had the pot metal flat top. The first one said Nat’l Phono around 25614 they have TAE Inc on them. 2. The second N was the trowel, not to be mistaken with the N-56. The trowel N does not have a pillar for the Amberola lift. This likely came out the same time as the trowel O around 42,000. These have the early dome top. 3. Then come the bent weight N’s. I have observed the start around 46,000 and they normally have the good or last style of large top. The bent weight N has six varieties. 1. Extended H weight stamped Model N over H 4 Minute. 2. Extended H weight stamped Model N 4 Minute. 3. Extended H weight stamped Model-N in slightly larger letters 4 Extended H weight stamped N. 5. N weight stamped N 6. N weight stamped N with pin holding stylus bar in place. The Frow book has four of these and does not mention the trowel weight N. 7. Then the N-56 which has three serial number varieties. First the regular O and N serial number, I have seen one in the 70,000 range. Then more commonly I have seen four in the R and S serial number range of 31,000. Finally the A series, I know of an N-56 with an A287 serial number. I believe the A series were made after the fire but I could be mistaken. I do know for certain that C, H and K’s were made after the fire along with 2 and 4 minute recorders. In 1911, Edison's companies were re-organized into Thomas A. Re: [Phono-L] How it Started
Here is my story: I was stationed in San Diego, CA 1n 1988, aboard the USS Cape Cod (AD-43). I was in supply, so I had plenty of room. I was at an antique store in San Diego and saw a Victrola VI from 1918. I always wanted a Victrola and this small one was perfect to bring aboard ship. It included 10 records and needles and was good to go. During trips out to sea, I would play that Victrola.. She sure sounded good. When I was due to transfer to Bremerton, WA, I had it shipped to the barracks. Once I was settled in the barracks, I played the heck out of the Victrola. I was bit by the bug.Later on I got an Edison Fireside, and a Columbia Q. I had three phonographs in my barracks room. Thank goodness my room mate was always out.I would play all of my machines while my household goods were still in storage.I got Eric Reiss's book and learned about repairs and restoration. These machines were my source of entertainment. In the meantime I was buying a home, in Bremerton. While I was living in the barracks, my neighbor would play rap records. I asked him many times to to turn down the music. He would not comply. I took my Edison Fireside with the big horn and crane added to it and placed the horn on the wall. I played the most obnoxious cylinders over and over again. There was a knock on my door and my neighbor was pleading for me to stop. He wanted to know what was making all of this noise, so I showed him the Fireside with the big horn against the wall. He was fascinated with my mini collection. A month later, I moved into the house and these phonographs breed like rabbits!!! I have been collecting for close to 25 years. I got to work on phonographs AND got free soft drinks. So, to the list of those who've been generous and supportive must be added the waitresses of Flynn's Dixie Ribs of the mid 1970s. Here's mine. I've had an affinity for history, machines and the phonograph for as long as I can remember, and recall creating a paper model of an upright phonograph before I ever had a real one. I also remember standing in utter awe, in the Edison Winter Home and Museum in Fort Myers (now the Edison-Ford estates), gazing at the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling display of cylinder players sprouting morning glory horns in such profusion that it looked like a massive, enchanted garden. I have to admit reaching out to touch some of the uprights and consoles there, lined up behind velvet barrier rails, just so I could feel the history. In 1974 when I was 12 my family moved, and within bike-riding distance of our new home was a restaurant called Flynn's Dixie Ribs. For ambience, it was decorated with old relics, including Singer sewing machines and several mostly 1920s phonographs. I don't recall if they were for sale, but my first phonograph, a Berg-Artone portable, was procured from there. The management was very kind, letting me tinker with the machines in the off hours, and it was there that I got my first hands-on phonograph mechanism education. I recall that I paid for the Berg-Artone with a fine Morgan silver dollar and $5.00 hard-earned from mowing ten lawns in the Florida heat. That portable had a broken mainspring, a punctured, wrinkled aluminum diaphragm and a dangling needle chuck. You might say that the management got the better end of the deal, but for me it was a major coup to get the solid makings of a viable machine. I got two records with it; a tired copy of Jimmie Lunceford's R hythm is Our Business on Decca, and Till We Meet Again (paired with Have a Smile) on Victor. First I sorted out the reproducer and for a time I just spun the records by finger-on-the-label, enthralled at how so much sound could come out of a purely mechanical device. I was already into electronics and had built some kits and a little transistorized amplifier, so discovering that acoustic reproduction could yield such bold volume and detail was a revelation. I also learned that the motor's

Re: [Phono-L] Regal Phono
It's hard to tell from the head on shot. My guess is that's an imported machine with an American label. I could be wrong. The horn looks European to me. It's really hard to put a value on the machine. From what I've seen, I'd say it's worth $4-5 hundred. For some reason, European machines don't command the prices like Victor, Columbia, etc. I personally like the European machines. They have so much class to them. That being said, I have leather belts of 100+ years still going strong with original stitching. For a machine just to play a record well the neoprene is likely a good choice. For originality, a leather belt with stitching is my choice. You can skive the ends of the leather belt. Join them with Barge Cement. Then use one of those toy sewing machines they sell As Seen On TV, with a home made guide fence, to put on the twin parallel stitches. A light touch of Barge Cement at the thread ends will keep them from unraveling while playing. The belt can be dressed with leather protectant and will last indefinitely. That's my 2 cents worth... Re: [Phono-L] Cracked Record Repair/Preservation
Hi Curt I do something similar. I use ACC(crazy glue) and run a drop on the edge of the crack. I carefully move the cracked part up and until the glue flows into the whole length of the crack using a capillary action. Then I carefully use the pointy end of a paper towel to remove the excess of the glue. I have used this method for over 20 years since I started collecting. Harvey Kravitz From: Vinyl Visions vinyl.visi...@live.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Sunday, August 14, 2011 6:54 PM Subject: [Phono-L] Cracked Record Repair/Preservation I recently decided to try a repair/restoration on a cracked early Zonophone record. The crack was a hairline from the edge to the label, with a slight gap near the edge. Normally I throw these away, since they usually get worse and break anyway. I decided to try a method that I thought might work using Weldbond white glue. Weldbond is a very versatile glue that works well on a number of types of materials and is easy to use since it cleans up with water and is key to this process. I placed a line of glue along the entire crack, then worked it in with my finger while gently flexing the crack to make sure the glue penetrated into the crack. I did both sides of the crack the same way. Then using a damp - not wet - paper towel and rubbing in the direction of the grooves, I wiped out any excess and made sure the grooves were not filled in. After 24 hours, the record sounds as solid as new when tapped and plays well. You can still see the hairline crack, but it filled in solid and is now stabilized and plays well considering. I have done this on several other records that I could not stand to throw away and they turned out well. Try it on one of your damaged records for posterity's sake - what do you have to lose? It's nice how Ferguson's personality comes through, in addition to the information and insights. I especially found it interesting to read about having to shout into the recording horn for the disc, in contrast to using natural voice (such that it would be with some projection, I imagine) into the cylinder recording horn. Delightful picture also of the inebriated musicians at the Columbia studio. Glimpses of Ferguson's recollections of Cal Stewart and other notable early recording artists shed a more vibrant light on the personalities than you would find in the conventional biographies. And of course always interesting to read anything about Edison himself, and some of this also comes through in the writing. I was amazed that Ferguson's recall extended from the living memory of these artists and events to the technical, even recalling the lengths, widths, thicknesses and termination details of the mainsprings for all the popular model Edison phonographs. What I've mentioned here just covers a small part of the broad range of answers to Kimmett's questions. Although a slender volume of approximately 25 pages, at $12.50 postpaid it's well worth every penny. Where else are you going to get information like that? The time and print cost alone on a small private printing like this makes the price more than fair. The effort to re-transcribe Kimmett's nearly 40-year-old original, in clean, readable type is a nice plus as well. It's all very welcome information. Thanks for taking the time to re-publish this irreplaceable history. Would that it were ten times as long! Re: [Phono-L] Diamond Disk stylus repair
Another way to test is to run your finger nail over the point. If the point scratched the finger nail, the point is bad. Use light pressure. Harvey Kravitz From: Rich rich-m...@octoxol.com To: Antique Phonograph List phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Sat, March 19, 2011 8:17:47 PM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Diamond Disk stylus repair For those that have not noticed it being done. The standard dealer test of the condition of the DD diamond stylus is to run their dirty thumb over it and if it feels like there is a point on it they pronounce it good. So, plan on buying a replacement bar or trashing the records. If you happen to have a good microscope you can inspect the point yourself for condition as it is a rounded end conical shape and is symmetric with no flat spots. On 03/19/2011 09:10 PM, Steven Medved wrote: If you buy a reproducer you can count on the diamond being bad, 2 and only 2 of the Diamond ABC reproducers I have rebuilt have had good diamonds, the rest were worn or damaged. I purchased an Edisonic on eBay with a good diamond and recently I did a Dance and and Edisonic for a man and both diamonds were good. This is the exception rather than the rule. People think diamonds are indestructible but I NEVER play any DD record with surface damage and I lower my stylus in the starting groove then I spin up the record, and I stop the record before I raise the reproducer. When used as a stylus diamonds in DD reproducers are weak and must be carefully shielded from damage: Toughness Toughness relates to a material's ability to resist breakage from forceful impact. The toughness of natural diamond has been measured as 3.4 MN m-3/2,[10] which is good compared to other gemstones, but poor compared to most engineering materials. As with any material, the macroscopic geometry of a diamond contributes to its resistance to breakage. Diamond is therefore more fragile in some orientations than others. According to Edison Diamond Disc Re-Creations records artists 1910-1929 page 107: In this process the diamonds were first silver plated, then mounted on rods with paraffin, plated for 72 hours with nickel layers electro deposited under tension. The styli were thus held under layers of nickel at thousands of pounds of pressure. The nickel-encased diamonds were then polished to conical shape, the nickel at the stylus point being found away as the diamond was polished. The finished stylus was then soldered into its stylus bar. In the early days, bare diamonds were just soldered into bars and were prone to breakage when carelessly lowered onto the record. The original DD styli were soldered in, Edison stopped this practice when it was noted that such diamonds were prone to damage when carelessly lowered onto records. The earliest bars have the bare diamond soldered in; the later ones were first plated with nickel and then soldered in. To understand this think of a wooden pencil the diamond is the lead. When the pencil is sharpened the wood is removed and the lead is shaped, the wood is the nickel and the lead is the diamond. I actually thought it would be better to buy an entire reproducer, because of the cost... but I bought it on eBay - it had a diamond, but it was bad - it played, but tore up records. It took buying three to get one decent one. There is no way to determine if an eBay seller actually knows if they are good or bad - some might, but more than likely, you will get one that someone else had trouble with. Buy one from a reputable phono guy like George Vollema in Michigan or Ron Sitko, its worth it. Even if you buy the stylus mounted on a needle bar - those reproducers are a pain to rebuild, especially removing and replacing the needle bar and trying not to break the little string that connects it... It takes a punch the size of a blunt needle to remove the pin, which is also rounded on the end and since they have been in there almost 100 yrs., they can be very aggravating. All in all, if you don't need more stress in your life, buy a rebuilt one from someone who knows how to do it - a jeweler most likely will not. It could go up in the last few minutes of the auction. Those are my observations of ebay. I've seen good things go on ebay for nothing and crappy stuff go high. I have a 5400 series BA that I tried to sell and couldn't get more than $20 after listing it twice, (it was a Hawaiian number) so I kept it. I just relisted it yesterday and its up to $42 already. So, as you say, go figure. --- On Mon, 1/17/11, Jay Horenstein jay.horenst...@gmail.com wrote: From: Jay Horenstein jay.horenst...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Theodore Roosevelt cylinder To: Antique Phonograph List phono-l@oldcrank.org Date: Monday, January 17, 2011, 11:40 AM I couldn't tell you. I had a early Vic I (mint) all original, low serial number, original small flower horn, and small reproduction bell horn (for a flawless display) on EBay, and it went for $625. At the same time a beat up, non working, no horn, nothing special Vic 1 went for $1500. Go figure. Recently I offered an oak spearpoint (make an offer) horn on on these phono forums, NO bites, but it went for $1250 on EBay. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a collector? What's your opinion, is this cylinder (Social and Industrial Justice) just that common, or is it the economy, or what? Just wondering. I can seem to let it go for less than $85 so I think I'll keep it. Re: [Phono-L] Mike Vertucci has passed away
Although I never met Mike in person, I corresponded with him for over 10 years. I bought three machines from him. They were an early front mount AH, 2/4 min Edison Model A Triumph, and a late BNW with a giant fluted horn. These machines were in great condition and my favorites. Mike and I would talk on the phone for over an hour talking about phonographs and other subjects. It's been a privilege to know you Mike and RIP. Harvey Kravitz From: Don Henry phonowo...@hotmail.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Mon, January 3, 2011 11:41:23 AM Subject: [Phono-L] Mike Vertucci has passed away I just wanted to pass along for those of you who knew Mike Vertucci, that he passed away yesterday morning in his sleep. He had been in very ill health for the last year and a half since he fell and was paralyzed from the waist down. Mike was an avid collector with a childlike enthusiasm for the hobby. Although some had less than satisfying transactions with Mike over the years, I truly believe that his intentions were always good, if not always 100% accurate in his descriptions. Up until a month ago, Mike was still so excited about collecting. Even bedridden and with no money, he was making deals and trades in his head and looked to the future. Truly the hobby is what kept him going and helped to lift his spirits. R.I.P. Mike. ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
