Good suggestions M. I may have *fixed* it by specifying suggestions come only
from my Default Address Book and nothing else. I can no longer replicate the
*suggestion* in a new email as before. I'll have to wait to see if it happens
again on an incoming email from him.

Many thanks (again).

TF Go to: Options / Preferences / Message List / Fonts.

TF Over here, it says Segoe UI, which is the orginal font set by Ritlabs.
TF Maybe this got changed unintentionally with an unknown keyboard shortcut.

Well, of course I have no idea of what happened but NOW I can change the listed

When I follow your path I see that mine also shows Segoe UI and I learned that

One thing you might want to check is if there's some program that's hogging CPU
time. Move your cursor down into the task bar and right-click. Then click on
TASK MANAGER. When it comes up click on the header POWER USAGE to get the most
hungry app to the top. (My apologies if you're already familiar with this).

Microsoft automatically runs a program called "Anti Malware Service Executable"
(MsMpEng.exe). It's an anti-malware program which has lately (on my computer)
become VERY demanding of CPU time. I have begun to have constant problems with
this program freezing my computer until it releases the CPU. It has high
priority
and cannot be made lower priority.

Just a thought.

It is.

M>> I have never noticed anybody getting "trouted" when they posted links
M>> to screenshots. So it has been accepted, which I guess means it is
M>> acceptable.

JSL> Thanks M. I'll see what happens.

Here's the lore:

Attachments (inc screen-shots) are perfectly acceptable (although HTML
messages are frowned upon because they invariably double the size of
any simple message and our transmission facilities are provided FOC by
a generous host, on whose generosity I /know/ none of us would wish to
over-impose).

...HOWEVER...

There are limits to the size of permitted attachments. 25k on TBUDL
and 75k on TBBETA. If your screen-shot is small enough, attach it by
all means. You can even chance it. The worst that can happen is an
automated rejection from the Mailman server.

I hope that clarifies things.

Doh! Yes, of course. I just never noticed the keyboard equivalent in the context

Anyway, thanks for the reply and the original tip.

TMP files

2020-04-28 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I just noticed my wife's laptop HDD is almost full. I ran WinDerStat to get a
visual representation of the contents of her HDD. The results showed that at
least a quarter of the HDD space is taken up by .tmp files, all in TB's folders.
Can I simply select all of TB's .tmp files and delete them?

As you can see above, your entire sig is present in this reply. However, if I
place the cursor at the beginning of the dash-dash-space in your email above and
press END on my keyboard, the cursor goes only to the end of the last dash. If
there was a space there I would think the cursor would have stopped one space
beyond the last dash.

When I reply to the email I sent you on 1 Sep 2019, none of my original sig on
that email appears in the reply. Exactly the opposite of what you're
experiencing.

Hmmm, interesting. When I open a command window the first line says "Microsoft

I changed my sig to match yours and you can see the result. The only odd thing I

it. That apparently made the difference but I don't see how unless

Thanks for that Miguel but it seems that NOT SELECTING is the default. When I
choose to see the RFC-822 header information, my preview window suddenly has two
new tabs at the bottom, one named HEADERS and the other named TEXT. Clicking on
the HEADERS tab shows only the header information in the preview pane. I have to
click on TEXT to see the actual message preview.

However, thanks to your superior knowledge in the intricacies of all things TB!,
you have led me to the solution. To wit: ALL of the resulting hits in the search
were all sent as HTML files. Guess what my default browser is. That's right,
Chrome. All of the HTML files contain one or more instances of the string
"google" thereby meeting the search criteria.

So, many thanks Miguel. It would have taken me quite a while to suss this out

If I set the search criteria to SENDER then I get only those messages where the
sender is actually "google". "ANY PART" returns 98 messages whereas TEXT returns
only 90 messages so that seems to validate what you're saying.

How would one go about de-selecting VIEW RFC-822 headers? It's most annoying the

Search function

2019-03-22 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

The latest messages from MAU and Paul F. Siebern regarding TB! not being able to
access Gmail after March 31st reminded me that I too had received a message from
Google regarding March 31st. Only my message was to inform me of the following:

This is a reminder that on April 2, 2019 we’re shutting down consumer Google+
and will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and
videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be
deleted.

However, I had to manually search through several different TRASH folders to
find the message. This is because when I tried to use TB!'s search function to
find messages which had the string "google" in it, it always returned many hits,
most of which, if not all, did not contain that string. I used the criteria "ANY
PART" or "TEXT" or "SENDER" assuming that that's where that string would be.

Although my message from Google did not mention TB!'s permission to fetch mail
from Google, The March 31st deadline was contained in the message.

That aside, does anyone know why the search function would return so many
invalid hits? Was I doing it incorrectly?

Unknown CA Certificate

2019-01-07 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Once again, for no apparent reason I've started getting "Unknown CA Certificate"
boxes whenever I fetch my Gmail. See
https://www.dropbox.com/s/84uvl064x9cfcej/2019-01-07%2010_18_49-Connection%20Center.png?dl=0
Nothing's changed (at least by me) so I'm at a loss to understand why this
should be occurring. If I go directly to Google from my browser and fetch my
Gmail, nothing out of the ordinary happens. I spent quite a while searching
through the archives and actually found posts by me regarding similar
occurrences but none to match this one exactly. As you can see the message box
gives no procedure to correct the error but only to continue. If I choose to
continue then my Gmail is fetched with no apparent problems.

Anyone have any idea as to why this is happening?

Thanks for any suggestions.

TF> I cannot confirm this, it always looks the same over here.

I find it a little disappointing that yours was the only response (for which I
am grateful BTW) to my query.

Since the original post it has happened again but this time I noticed that the
address book she *was* using was replaced by one named "Personal Address Book".
If you right-click on that name at the top of the address book tree and select
Properties it displays STORED IN FILE:

C:\Users\June\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!\TheBat.ABD

I believe that file is the original TB! address book which is of course empty
when TB! is first installed.

When she got her own computer I created separate address book files with her
email addresses only, excluding mine. I named those address books something
along the lines of "June's address" or just simply "June". I'm beginning to
suspect that for reasons unknown, TB! will, on it's own, revert back to the
original address book, TheBat.ABD regardless of which address book she happens
to be using.

With that in mind I used TB's address book window to copy all the addresses from
the self-made address books into the one called Personal Address Book which in
File Manager is called TheBat.ABD. I then deleted the other self-made address
books leaving only TheBat.ABD in C:\Users\June\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!\.

With the other address books no longer in existence I'm hoping the next time TB!
decides to teach me a lesson, it won't have non-native address books to deal
with. Time will tell.

Again, thanks for your response.

Wandering address book

2018-09-23 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

My wife's laptop has developed a habit of (apparently) randomly switching
address books. This last time, when I looked in
C:\Users\June\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!, which is where I usually find the
address books, the one I was looking for wasn't there. I did a disk search for
.abd and found a folder here: C:\TB!ADBs which contained the address book for
which I was searching, and nothing else. Note the transposition of the D and B.

Should this folder even exist? And if so should it be located in the root
directory of the C drive? There's a very slight possibly that I might have
created this folder years ago but even if so, why would the (in use) address
book move into this folder and be replaced in TB! with one from
C:\Users\June\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!? She's running TB! v6.0.12. Where in this
version are the address books normally kept?

Additionally, any ideas as to why TB would change the current address book in
what appears to be a random fashion? She has no idea how to change the default
address book and no one else uses this computer except me and that's usually
only when something like this happens.

Many thanks for any insights.

Certificate warning

2018-05-17 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

My wife has been getting these https://preview.tinyurl.com/y725jbda certificate
warnings which *seem* to be somehow connected to emails from The New York Times
newsletters. The problem is that you can't get past the warning. I almost always
have to use Task Manager to shut down TB because the warning just won't go away.
Sometimes even after shutting down TB with Task Manager, when TB is re-started,
the same thing immediately happens and I can't get past the warning. I got lucky
once and somehow managed (by clicking on "YES", "NO" or "VIEW CERTIFICATE") to
get past the warning and once again have access to TB and immediately deleted
all emails from The NYT. That seems to have cured the problem at least until the
next NYT newsletter. These emails do not come in daily so it's not something
easily reproduce-able.

I'm beginning to suspect that the warnings may be triggered by each NYT email
so even if I follow all the instructions for the warning on screen, others await
in any other NYT emails because it hasn't happened since I deleted ALL the NYT
emails from her inbox.

Any insights into how to handle this will be greatly appreciated.

Bounce-back messages

2018-03-29 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Suddenly I am getting bounce-back messages whenever I try to send to two
specific individuals. This problem started about 4 days ago. Prior to this time
I had always been able to send messages to these two without any problems. The
log message says:

!3/29/2018, 11:52:04: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply - 5.2.0
Tss01x00X3c7r7o01ss28E Message identified as SPAM - Please visit
http://www.charter.com/postmaster E5110.

However, if you click on the URL you get a 404 error.

I spoke with a Charter (now Spectrum) agent who said they have been having
problems with bounce-back messages and when I ask if she had any idea when it
might be resolved she didn't know but suggested I go to:
https://www.spectrum.net/support and ask them. After going there I got into a
"live chat" with a representative who, after some "troubleshooting" declared the
problem to be with TB. Mainly because I could send messages to these two
individuals if I did it from the Spectrum website directly.

Usually when you tell them you're using TB as an email client, which they've
never heard of, the problem suddenly becomes yours because of your email client.
Although as mentioned, I was able to send (from Spectrum's website) a message to
at least one of these individuals with no problem so I can see how he might have
jumped at the chance to blame an email client he never heard of.

For what it's worth I CAN send messages to at least one (I only tried one) of
these individuals as long as I do it from my Gmail account from within TB. It
would seem to me that if I can send from the Gmail account I should be able to
send from the Spectrum account. Additionally, my wife has gotten the same
bounce-back error message in the past when she tried to email one specific
individual.

I don't know where to go from here.

Well, mainly because I didn't know you could do that. When I looked at the
export options I saw that I could export as .csv files, and I knew I could
import those files into Excel and edit them from within Excel. That seemed to be
the way to go.

I tried what you suggested and of course it worked perfectly. Even where an
entry was duplicated in all three books, it only pasted the ones with distinct
email addresses. So it did the work for me.

My apologies for being so tardy in replying but this operation had several
"gotchas", mainly because I wasn't paying attention. It turned out to be an
invaluable lesson in how address books are managed in TB!.

M> Is there any possibility that you didn't delete the whole line when
M> deleting the duplicate entries? A long shot, but all I could think of.
M>

Although it's moot now, the answer to your question is no. When you select an
entire line in Excel, every cell on that line is selected all the way out to the
absolute last column in the spreadsheet, whether those cells contain data or
not. So by deleting that line, you delete everything that line may have
contained.

Once again, my sincere appreciation for your help.

Exporting/importing address books

2018-02-15 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Over the years I have somehow managed to create three address books. I wanted to
export them to a file I could edit and so chose to export all three to comma
separated (.csv) files. I then used the DOS COPY command to combine all three
into one .csv file. I could then double-click on the combined file and Excel
would launch and load the combined file. So far so good. I then edited (deleted
duplicate addresses) and saved the file.

When I imported the combined file back into a newly created (empty) address
book, I found that many entries at the top of the book were completely empty. As
I scrolled down, text began to appear in the NAME column but it was punctuation
marks followed further down by street addresses then ultimately by what appeared
to be legitimate entries. However, upon checking these entries I found that
information that should have been in an entry was in fact some of the
aforementioned punctuation and street addresses at the top of the book.

I tried saving the Excel file several different ways all to no avail.

What am I missing?

My apologies for replying to my own post but I felt the need to close this query
since I figured out the solution but not the problem. The solution was to click
on the "file" option at the top of the opened address book which I eventually
did in desperation. I was presented with a list of ABDs to click on, one of
which was JLF.ABD, her initials. Opening that ABD file restored her address book
to what it was. The question remains unanswered however as to how that address
book "JLF.ABD" got closed in the first place.

So, who is preventing the transmission of this forward? It's worth noting that I

Autofill suggestions

2018-01-05 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

When I start to type a name (lets say "John")into the TO field of a new message,
TB! will display a number of possibles, some of which have incorrect email
addresses. How do I get rid of these?

I have used the chevron at the end of the TO field (view history) and used the
down arrow to get the cursor into the history and deleted any instances of
"John" whose address was incorrect. I have gone into the AB (using the ABs
search function) and again deleted all instances of "John" where the address was
wrong, yet TB! still offers up some (not all) of the original list of possibles
whenever I type "John" in the TO field. So obviously I have succeeded in
removing *some* of the erroneous address entries, but not all. I don't know
where else to look.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Well, I followed the instructions laid out in Avast's "Troubleshooting email
client warnings about invalid server certificates" which remarkably matched what
I was seeing on screen but it still presents the warning when I do a Gmail
fetch.

Unfortunately, port numbers and TLS and STARTLS are beyond my scope of knowledge
right now but I do thank you for the help. For now I'll just continue to click
OK on the warning.

UPDATE - My apologies for replying to my own message but I just wanted to convey
that apparently the problem went away after I rebooted my computer. Avast wanted
to do an update when I opened the Avast control panel and so I let it. After the
update it wanted me to reboot the computer but I was right in the middle of the
original reply to MFPA's message so I postponed the reboot. My mistake. The
reboot apparently took care of the certificate problem.

So, once again M, thanks.

Well that explains why Edge was suddenly being used to display PDFs on my

There's gotta be a monetary reason for that.

You'd think wouldn't you? But no. I have Adblocker, Adblocker Plus, AdRemover
and Ublock Origin. Yet, the ads still appear.

It is somehow satisfying to be able to remove these ads from my screen, even
though I know that they're still lurking in the original HTML. Such is the way
my mind works.

Ad source mystery (solved) (sort of)

2017-11-21 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

To all who have been following this thread I wanted to let everyone know that I
found a Chrome extension which does what I remember from what I posted in the
original post.

It's a page clean-up-for-printing extension and once invoked, places a red
border around the element clicked on. The entire contents enclosed by the red
border turns light red and at that point and pressing the "D" key immediately
deletes that element from the page.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/print-edit-we/olnblpmehglpcallpnbgmikjblmkopia

It seems to work exactly as I remembered it except it's improved in that a
toolbar appears at the top of the page where previously you had to poke around
to find the menu.

The deletions are of course temporary and will re-appear when the page is
reloaded. It's just used to clean up a web page for printing and the cleaned
page can be saved if needed. A neat way to save ink and paper.

Admittedly not a perfect solution and it may seem to some that removing
extremely offensive ads before reading the page is just too much. But I'm glad I
found it again.

I'm confused (to say the least). The Chrome icon appearing at the far left when
I'm still in TB! is titled MESSAGE.HTML. I thought that the file is merely an
HTML text file which when opened by the Chrome browser, displays a web page just
like any other web page. If that's true, and if the Image Download Manager can
delete specific text from the HTML file before it's ever opened by Chrome, then
shouldn't that prevent from appearing whatever image was defined by the text
which the Image Download Manager deleted? Or do I simply not understand what the

I don't ever see any images until I double-click that Chrome icon and the HTML

Thank you Lore. I did not know of such a tool within TB!. I took a brief look at
it in my Bat long enough to learn that apparently there's no CTRL-F (text
search) that can be used from within TB!. However, it just occurred to me that I
might be able to copy the text and paste it into a new text document and search
it that way.

Again, thanks for the information.

Yes, I can unsubscribe but I'm still very curious as to their source. A previous
reply from Lore Galore brought to the fore a little known (to me) function
within TB! that may possibly be used to prevent page elements from ever
appearing. It looks interesting and I plan to explore it at some length or until
I just give up in frustration because I don't know enough about HTML coding.

I apologize for not mentioning that all the ads seemed to be contained in only
the Kim Komando newsletters. I simply overlooked it.

Right. I made the notations regarding the URLs just to show the origin of the
displayed screens.

Well, I don't know where to find either the temp file or the message source but
here's a link to the entire page source from the browser:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/g43p8la416yn2wm/Page%20source.txt?dl=0

I did a text search while it was onscreen and the string "powerinbox" shows up
numerous times but I don't know how this helps.

I'm beginning to get a glimmer of how all this works and if I'm understanding it
correctly couldn't the original HTML text file have come from Kim Komando?
Couldn't she be including the ad text in the HTML she sends out rather than it
coming from Charter? The ads seem to appear only in anything from Kim Komando. I
subscribed to several of her newsletters and the ads appear in all of the
newsletters.

I wrote a less than laudatory snail mail letter to Kim Komando expressing my
disgust at being assumed to have only an elementary school education with a room
temperature IQ. I asked if there was a way to prevent these ads from appearing
on my screen but never received a reply, email or otherwise. This does not speak
well for the Komando machine.

While I have your attention, do you have any idea who Anton Belenki is and why
he might be sending me the URL to his website in response to my original query?

Ad source mystery

2017-11-19 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

First let me thank Marck for clarification on ways to get screenshots to this
list.

Second, to the reason for this missive. The following Dropbox link shows how I
view TB! Upper left is my account tree, upper right is the message list for the
folder selected in the tree and the bottom half contains the contents of the
selected message.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6y4mrkjfwcpfyr6/TB%21%20view%20screen.png?dl=0

Notice that the bottom half doesn't provide a whole lot of information about the
message because no pictures are displayed. I suspect there are better ways of
doing this but this has sufficed for me for many years. If I WANT to view the
contents of the message in all its glory, I double-click on the Chrome icon at
the far left. More on that later.

The following link shows what I see when I log onto my ISP directly, go to my
email and click on that particular message.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/y1xfboq6ve6cty7/ISP%20email%20view.png?dl=0

Note the URL in the address bar. The ad at the top by POWERINBOX is the only one
I'll see anywhere on the entire web page. The ad is usually different each time
I view the page.

If however I double-click on the aforementioned Chrome icon at the far left of
my TB! view screen, it causes Chrome to be launched and displays the web page as
you would expect, with the same top of screen displayed as it was when I viewed
the message from my ISP directly. See next link.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/qnxw5j75pmkywjz/Top%20of%20screen.png?dl=0

Again, note the URL and notice the ad is different. Now however, as I scroll
down the page, I get this about a quarter way down:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cf0ookuq7updpuc/Scrolled%20a%20quarter%20down.png?dl=0

Scroll about halfway down and I see this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9zq5bls5oqqcuma/Scrolled%20halfway%20down.png?dl=0

Scroll almost to the bottom of the page and I see this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/admn2h9vjr9kzq3/Scrolled%20almost%20to%20bottom.png?dl=0

I'm sure you'll agree, these ads would insult the intelligence of a fifth
grader.

So, the question is: where do these ads come from since they appear only if I
click on the Chrome icon contained in the message? My assumption is that they're
somehow inserted by TB!, but how? Has my copy of TB! been hacked? If so, why are
all the ads sponsored by POWERINBOX? Coincidence? Has anyone else experienced
this?

Thanks for your patience in looking at this message. I know if there are any
answers, this list will have them.

In addition to finding out that the above didn't work I also am plagued with
search returns which have no match to the search string anywhere .

As an experiment I just did a search: ANY PART - CONTAINS - pun and received 346
messages which ostensibly contain the string "pun". In examining them I find
most
DO NOT contain the string "pun". Not in the body or in the header. Why?

I just did another search: HEADER - CONTAINS - pun. 115 messages returned and
the few I looked at did not have the string "pun" in the header. Again why?

I am giving TB! the benefit of the doubt here and assume I just don't understand
something, but I do it grudgingly.

No, as it turns out I'm beginning to realize that there may not be a solution
for this *exact* situation. I actually found the email in question by specifying
a date range (resulting in a much smaller number of hits) and then looking at
all that returned from the search. Examining *that* email I saw that "onco" was
a part of a string something like "oncomedicine". Knowing that, I asked myself
how I could have set up the search parameters to have found only the email which
contained "oncomedicine while still searching only for "onco".

I halfway suspected something like this and since we both have free email
accounts through Charter (now Spectrum) you're probably right. If in fact it is
Spectrum's doing then you would think the error message would be a lot more
enlightening to the customer. An error message that explained it's raison d'etre
might plant the idea that perhaps a paid account would be more to the customer's
liking.

Thanks for your input.

Thanks Miguel. Actually we copied the file into Dropbox and sent the Dropbox

I'll try Filemail next time.

Try https://zxing.appspot.com/generator/, a more robust QR code generator.

Well I was going to be clever and compose this reply then generate a QR code of
the text, which I did. The following is what I received:

The reason it is being held:

violation as you did. I did not.

Probably not what you're looking for but highlighting a file or several files
and right clicking will allow you to do a SAVE-AS. the resulting save is a .txt
file.

I don't remember the exact steps but you start at ACCOUNT>NEW and fill in the
blanks. I have had a GMAIL account within TB! for a number of years now with no
problem. My menu bar at the top of the window has an icon to GET NEW MAIL with a
drop-down arrow next to it. Clicking on the arrow will give you the option of
fetching mail from your primary account or fetching from all accounts at once.

I don't recall ever creating/using any common folders and frankly I'm not even
sure what a common folder is.

M> Check your ' account' Properties/Mail management/Deletion and

Since you had me poking around preferences I noticed that deletions under
"Normal Deletions" was set to "Move messages to trash folder" which I would have
thought meant the trash folder for that account. Since it didn't seem to work
that way as evidenced by what happened this morning, I instead selected "Move to
the specified folder" and then selected that account's trash folder. I have now
done that for both accounts.

If no further messages get routed to that orphan trash folder at the bottom of
the tree, I'll eventually delete it.

Thanks for the help Miguel.

Trash folders

2017-02-06 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I have two accounts set up in my TB! and somehow have three trash folders. I
have a trash folder in the account, a trash folder in my Gmail account
and a third which sits at the very bottom of the account tree. All three trash
folders contain copious amounts of trashed emails.

I ask because this morning I trashed an email from the account and
later had to retrieve it. I couldn't find it in the account trash
folder where I expected it to be but in the trash folder below the account tree.

I can understand each account having its own trash folder but why the one at the
bottom of the account tree and why would an email trashed from the
account wind up in the bottom trash folder and not the trash folder?

What governs where a trashed email will end up? Can I delete any of these trash
folders without dire consequences?
