One of the best features of OOo is Stylist. If a longtime OOo user is
forced to use MSO, if they're anything like me, the thing you miss the
most is stylist. However it's not with out it's issues and one of the
reasons that people often don't use stylist is because of one particular
UI behaviour.
The picture (bmp) looks just fine after reopening the file. No problem here.

I would personally uninstall that version and installed 2.0.3 ... If
you do however want to keep the version you have I would try the
'repair' option. Start the 'setup.exe' and select the repair option
(this is from memory so apologies if I do have something wrong)...
Reply to the list if issue
You need to make sure that the file that you are working on in OOo is
saved as an Excel file (save as). OOo has its own formats and unless
you save it into an Excel file, it will appear gibberish to Excel.

You could try renaming your user folder. That is the most likely
source of the problem.
You need to exit OpenOffice completely. When re-starting, it will
create a new user folder with the default settings.
I would not install 2.0.3. It has been beset with problems. 2.0.2
