Re: VoiceOver interupting my call, when using headphones?
I have been using Blue tooth headsets for almost three years and Voice over has always talked when i answer the call with the headset button. Mine will give me caller I D information. It is very annoying, and hard to hear the person on the phone. I have found the only way to prevent this is to turn the speech off with a three finger double tap before you put the phone in your pocket, or wherever. Just do not panic when you go to use the phone and Voice Over doesn't talk. Another three finger double tap will turn the voice back on. Hope this helps, Chuck On Monday, July 23, 2012 7:08:01 PM UTC-7, lpn...@gmail.com wrote: Today, I was using skoche headphones with volume/play button, and answered a call with said button, while my phone was in it's otterbox belt clip, and VO kept interrupting, I don't know if the caller could hear it or not, but knew something was wrong. Re: PodCruncher was : subscribing to mac accessibility apple vis podcasts
Hi Garth, As for pod cruncher, it's fully vo accessible. Obviously a plus. Beyond that I can't really offer much opinion or comparison, since I am not an experienced podcast subscriber, as evidenced by the start of this thread. :) I will give the two catchers you mentioned a look though to see what else is out there. Your site/podcast is a fantastic resource. I wish I'd found such a thing as a newby. :) But then again, old dogs can learn new tricks too. Thanks again, AJ On 7/24/12, Garth Humphreys ghu...@gmail.com wrote: Hi AJ If you are in the market for a different pod catcher than I wold recommend Downcast or iCatcher. Jody, here's how I to delete from app switcher. It sounds complicated when I write it down but it's really not. Maybe somebody else has an easier way. 1. go to the home screen. then, double click your home button and you will hear app switcher. 2. Flick to the right and then left to. Get a sense of the app switcher layout. On the left should be dismiss app switcher. Each flick right should land you on one of the open apps. Double tap on one of the apps and hold your finger in place until you hear editing apps. Then lift your finger. You are now in an editing apps mode. 3. Now, flick right and left through the open apps, double tapping each one without holding your finger. You should hear the little clicky sound as the app closes.Double tap Dismiss App Switcher. Note: this should work on all of the apps in the app switcher except for the last one you opened prior to entering the app switcher. For example, say you did some email, followed by surfing a web site, followed by checking weather. You should be able to enter the editing app switcher mode by double tapping and holding any app in the app switcher other than weather. I am told it is a good idea to regularly clear out your app switcher; don't know if it is true but I hear tell it helps with battery life. Pillow Speaker for the I4S?
Is there such an animal? When I'm having trouble sleeping, it would be nice to have the music coming out of my pillow rather than using the regular speaker or ear phones. low volume on iphone
well, I'm using the iphone 4S. The volume is stuck on very low. It's showing 100 percent but I have to hold it up to my ear to get anything out of it. I'm sure something is wrong because once in a while I can get full speaker volume back. Sometimes after using Siri or after inserting and pulling out the headphone jack. Any ideas on what I can do before calling apple support? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: low volume on iphone
Personally, I think this is a bug with iOS 5.1. Try going into sounds in settings, and swiping the volume down and back up to what you wanted to be and then exiting, you should find things come back to normal. It hasn't happened to me for a while, but sometimes it did after I had been in an audio program, such as audible, or wants voice-over had died. Don't know what it is, and I think it might only be me who experiences it. But give that a try. Hope it works. Re: Smartphone-Friendly Innovation Holds Promise of Freeing Dogs From Involuntary Service
I will never cease to be amazed at how all these projects are developed with seemingly no input from those of us who are blind! I agree with 100% of what has been said here, and my dog also seems quite happy in making sure I get safely from one place to another. I haven’t heard a complaint yet! From: Scott Howell Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2012 5:58 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Smartphone-Friendly Innovation Holds Promise of Freeing Dogs From Involuntary Service Well I think this is quite relevant to the discussion of iOS. First there is no way in hell a smart phone, including any iOS device will have sufficient battery to allow for the level of travel a dog can. You would have to hull along a considerable amount of batteries and find a charging station somewhere. I can get about 10 years of near continuous service, always on, and always ready to go from my dog, and hey I do not have to perform any upgrades or reboot him. Although I wouldn't mind tweaking some of his processes. :) I do not see this type of project ever working out because there is just simply no way to produce 2D maps for all the buildings etc. that is out there unless they expect crowd sourcing. I think instead of trying to replace the dog or cane, they would be better served in partnering with APple or a developer to integrate these ideas into a map program. For example, if it were possible to use cell towers, GPS, etc. to help navigate more efficiently indoors, that would be of some value. Trying to use a smart phone to tell you how to get from point A to point B inside or out will never be successful. I do not see blind people walking around waiving their iPhone so the camera can tell them about obstacles in the way and never mind the drop offs etc. Another project that seems to have not considered all aspects of what blind people could benefit from. On Jul 24, 2012, at 2:48 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hello Listers, I came across this article and am pretty shocked by it, I did not know that there are people and apparently organizations out there who consider guide dogs as providing an “involuntary” service which they apparently consider to be animal cruelty. I don’t really have the connections and the time, but I hope maybe some people on this list do advocacy sort of work and may look into this. The biggest joke is that this research seems to be geared towards getting around inside buildings which of course would be great, but apparently these folks don’t think much about how much a dog helps in getting around outside. Here is the article (hope the mods don’t object since the article refers to “smartphones” and not “iPhones”, but of course we all know how many accessible smartphone choices we have and I assume something like this, were it available, would not be a Windows Phone app!) Smartphone-Friendly Innovation Holds Promise of Freeing Dogs From Involuntary Service For Immediate Release: May 14, 2012 Contact: David Perle 202-483-7382 St. Paul, Minn. The University of Nevada–Reno (UNR) science team working on smartphone technology that will help blind people navigate on their own, even gauging their pace and warning them far in advance of obstacles such as a stairway, will present its invention at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in St. Paul on May 15 (the second day of the conference). The team, headed by researchers Dr. Eelke Folmer of the Player-Game-Interaction Lab and Dr. Kostas Bekris of the Robotics Research Lab, has won a PETA Proggy Award for Leadership in Ethical Science. PETA's Proggy Awards (Proggy is for progress) recognize animal-friendly achievements. This new technology promises not only to give blind people the independence they want but also could mean that dogs will no longer be bred for this type of service, says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. We commend the UNR team for developing 'eyes' for the blind that are both user-friendly and animal-friendly. The low-cost system would enable blind people to navigate around buildings using nothing more than a smartphone. Its software is based on the same technology that enables robots to navigate but uses the person's stride length to track his or her movements. The system uses two-dimensional digital maps and the smartphone's built-in components, with the phone able to communicate what it sees using synthetic speech. Upon initial use in a particular environment, the user touches certain landmarks. The smartphone remembers the information and is able to give the user directions on subsequent visits. request for a timer app
ok. i am producing this radio show podcasts. i want it to last around 15:30 minutes. but i am finding that i run over the time as i am speeking into my microphone. i need an app that allows you to time yourself and read the time out loud. talking timer is not good enough i have used it. it only allows you to have each minute or every five minutes read aloud. i need to be able to predetermine the time the program anounces the remaining time. for instance for a 15:30 minute show i would like it to read fifteen minute remaining at 15:00 thirty seconds into the show. by this time my intro should be over. from then on i want the program to read out the time every 3 and a half minutes. so it will again anounce the time remaining at 11:30 and again at 8 minutes and again at 430 and again at 1 minute remaining. there might not be an app for this and if not i will have to create a sound file consisting of silence and me reading off the time myself. but if there is a timer app which allows you to predetermine the intervols in which the time is read aloud and that intervols can be variable in that it does not always need to be the same throughout the period of time being measured, if that makes any sence, then let me know of the apps name. any programers out there i would be willing to pay quite a bit of money for such an app. oh, and my podcasts will soon be on itunes and it will be called the lockwood report or jim lockwood show. soon there will be a website at my address of jimlockwoodshow.com and the show deals with politics from a conservative viewpoint. have a great day and thanks for reading, if you get this far jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. iTouch Battery speed
Hi all, I'm new to the iTouch. I have the 4th gen. I have a couple questions. 1. Is the iTouch slower than the iPhone4s? As in should I notice it? I often feel it is sluggish or slow to respond. My voiceover flicks sometimes don't register, then they jumble all up. 2. The battery life, when it is good, it is great! Though I notice, it seems to jump around. I've never seen this before on an iDevice. I can be on 44%, then next thing I know, I'm on 20%. Another example, I just had it plugged into my Mac at 12%, and it charged up to 24%. Siri's Back!
Hi all, Having left Siri alone for a few days, I could bear it no longer! I was missing him! I therefore started him up and began to dictate! I couldn't believe it! I got really good results! What's going on? I don't know. Never mind, he's back, and I hope he stays! By the way, I have only made a couple of very minor alterations to this text. Not bad! Yes, I don't know how Siri works and whether some customers are on different servers from others, but last week, it was down for me for a couple of days. RE: Hulu
Hi. The Hulu app works extremely well with voiceover on the iPhone. They've got something right that Netflix still hasn't been able to do for whatever reason; a completely well-functioning app with voiceover. Netflix works but it takes some work arounds; hulu works without any of these. You do have to have a paid Hulu-Plus subscription to stream programs via iPhone or iPad however. As far as airplay, there's none supported for the phone, but you can do it on the iPad with the mirror in the task switcher. Suppose the reason for no airplay on the phone is more due to the fact that nobody's going to want to mirror that tiny screen onto for example, your apple TV and tV screen. So no audio airplay on the phone, but you can work around that on the iPad. HTh. Amy Billman Check out my company for your screen protector and phone accessory needs! RE: gps apps
Rebecca, Motion X GPS Drive is what I recommend. It is a subscription based app, $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year if I remember correctly. It has a 30 day free trial period as well. It has all the standard GPS features, and the two features that I really like are the business search capabilities and that a route can be simulated before being done. I will give you an example of the search capabilities of this app. I went to search and typed in Norfolk Southern. It then pulled up the next screen where it gives you the search results by distance. The simulate a route feature is handy for route planning purposes. If I was in a new area or going to a business that was not on any of my usual routes, I would use that feature to have an idea of where I would be going. Plus that allows the map to be downloaded as well. It does use data. I don't know how much per use since I have unlimited data. Hope this helps. Re: gps apps
Hi Rebecca, I suggest you do some research here: http://www.applevis.com/ios-app-directory/navigation GPS apps are all different and every one has a favorite. A word to the wise, none of these apps are as sophisticated as the Trekker. Most are made to use in an automobile, and lack the fine refinement, designed for the visually impaired, of the Humanware products. It is unfortunate that Humanware has not developed an iPhone app that uses the Trekker software. I'd pay $100 for that. Re: low volume on iphone
Hello, Actually, some apps place the sound output in the earpiece rather than the iPhone speaker. When running one of these apps and then leaving the app by pressing home, the command for the iPhone sound to remain in the earpiece remains active until you do enough tasks that the memory manager closes the app completely. It is quicker to go in to the app switcher, double-tap and hold on an app name until you hear VO say editing apps, and then double-tap the app which has locked your sound in the earphone to remove it from the active memory. Re: VoiceOver interupting my call, when using headphones?
Or, you can do a single-finger swipe to the left or right to move VO's focus to another field. Because VO has been focused on this particular field whilst using a bluetooth earpiece, the focus always starts in this field for you. Just move the focus and it should remain on the new field until you change it again. This way, you will not need to always remember to turn VO on and off. I agree. If someone came up with a really good GPS app for walking, I would spend some bucks for it too. Hi David, I am assuming that like me, he has the phone put away in a pocket or , in my case a saddle bag.. This is while I am riding my recumbent trike, and I can not get to the phone in time. Re: iTouch Battery speed
Just sold my iTouch subject to payment but yes the iTouch is slower than the iPhone 4s due to the difference in processor. This felt normal to me, but when I looked a few minutes later, it had jumped to 50%. That seems odd, is it? Thanks all, just want to figure out if this is normal, or is my Touch a dud? Lol! Re: request for a timer app
James, Go into Talking Timer and look at the settings area. After you set up your time, you can go there and tell it when you want to be prompted for the time remaining. You can set it up to let you know in different minute amounts or even seconds. I think you can also tell it to give you a warning a certain amount ahead of the final time you set. - Original Message - From: James Lockwood To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 10:06 AM Subject: request for a timer app ok. i am producing this radio show podcasts. i want it to last around 15:30 minutes. but i am finding that i run over the time as i am speeking into my microphone. i need an app that allows you to time yourself and read the time out loud. talking timer is not good enough i have used it. it only allows you to have each minute or every five minutes read aloud. i need to be able to predetermine the time the program anounces the remaining time. for instance for a 15:30 minute show i would like it to read fifteen minute remaining at 15:00 thirty seconds into the show. by this time my intro should be over. from then on i want the program to read out the time every 3 and a half minutes. so it will again anounce the time remaining at 11:30 and again at 8 minutes and again at 430 and again at 1 minute remaining. there might not be an app for this and if not i will have to create a sound file consisting of silence and me reading off the time myself. but if there is a timer app which allows you to predetermine the intervols in which the time is read aloud and that intervols can be variable in that it does not always need to be the same throughout the period of time being measured, if that makes any sence, then let me know of the apps name. any programers out there i would be willing to pay quite a bit of money for such an app. oh, and my podcasts will soon be on itunes and it will be called the lockwood report or jim lockwood show. soon there will be a website at my address of jimlockwoodshow.com and the show deals with politics from a conservative viewpoint. have a great day and thanks for reading, if you get this far jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Scanning With Digit-Eyes
Hi Rebecca, As Chuck stated, it's a matter of finding that darn bar code. There was a recent podcast on TekTalk that gave me some other tips on finding the bar codes. I will try to explain logically what I do. I am not saying that I find them on the first trial, but I do use a system that will eventually will read the bar code. 1. Cans: I look for the seam on the label. I will begin by placing the camera to the left of the seam at the bottom and raise the camera slowly,, listening for the clicks and then move it either higher (no more than 4-6 inches) or move it up the side. If not successful, I will start over, but place the camera to the right of the seam and perform the same steps. There are times when the bar code may be about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom and more to the middle back. These are the tricky ones and at times I will take out my ID Mate to check where the bar code is. 2. Plastic bags: I look for the seam on the back of the bag. I did this yesterday on a bag of brown rice. Usually the bottom edge will have more plastic as the end edge. I place the camera at the top (opposite edge of the bottom) and raise the camera slowly. If the bar code is not read, I go to the next corner. I repeat all four corners (if necessary) to capture the bar code. 3. Bottles: Usually there are two different labels on a bottle. Example: mustard jar-the front label should be larger then the back label. The bar code will be on the back label. I try the bottom part of that label first and then move up the label to find the bar code. I didn't have any problems yesterday finding it. I hope this allows you to get started and not give up on the app. Nancy Miracle has done a terrific job in creating this app, explanations on the web site, and support. Hats off to her. RE: Pillow Speaker for the I4S?
Hi, There is an excellent pillow speaker I got from the C. Crane Company. Their phone number is: 1-800-522-8863. The speaker is about as big around as a 50 cent piece and maybe 3/4 inch thick. It comes with a soft plush foam cover which I promptly took off. It's incredibly durable and has good sound. I've had mine for at least 5 years and it's gone through the automatic washer and still works fine. When I bought it it cost around $20. The website is ccrane.com. As far as Chase is concerned, my sighted friends have problems with this feature. More Re: New scanning app from ABBY
Hello, I have a sighted person play with the app and this is what does. It takes pictures of things like receipts and the like and puts them on your camera roll. Then you can either email them, as well as saving in a dropbox file and a few other on-line storage systems. So, for a blind person, it doesn't do anything, however, for a sighted person, it is just another app for copying receipts and the like. This concludes my findings. RE: More Re: New scanning app from ABBY
Which surely means that it does almost nothing, as surely a sighted person can take a picture of a receipt with the camera? It takes pictures of things like receipts and the like and puts them on your camera roll. Then you can either email them, as well as saving in a dropbox file and a few other on-line storage systems. So, for a blind person, it doesn't do anything, however, for a sighted person, it is just another app for copying receipts and the like. This concludes my findings. Problem With iPod
BlankJust looking for ideas. My friend who uses an iPod with Voiceover has a problem. He was updating his IOS and the iPod froze. He tried tapping the power button ten times. Also, he held down Power and Home with no results. He couldn't get into iTunes, so I sent him a copy but even though he can charge his iPod using the USB connections, he can't get it to respond. I suggested he hold down the home button and connect the usb cable while doing that, but it didn't help. If anybody has any more ideas, I'll pass them along. Re: New scanning app from ABBY
Hi Dan, Rick, and Others, Dan is correct. I carefully read through the app description when this thread first came up, and I think it simply captures an image at high resolution that can be sent to Dropbox, printed, or sent in image format to iBooks, etc. What's different about this app from TextGrabber and many other scanning apps for the iPhone is that it will save to either jpg or pdf format. Perfect OCR also had that ability, I think. Practically speaking, I believe you could send the results of this image capture to a desktop computer program that does OCR, and use more options. But without the feedback on whether the image you took was aligned, it would be hard to use. You could capture to the camera roll and try to send the results to TextGrabber, Prizmo, or Perfect OCR, and check whether those apps worked. In principle, this could give you access to higher quality scanning options, but the program itself does not OCR. I can imagine using this with a camera stand accessory, such as the Kickstarter Scanbox product. (I haven't gotten this app, so comments are only based on reading the descriptions.) HTH. Hi. Try resetting the iPod. Unplug it from anything that it is plugged into. Then press and hold both the home and power buttons at the same time. Re: Scanning With Digit-Eyes
I would like to add that this does take patience, but it's worth it. I have certainly gotten better at it with experience. I've also used the technique of pressing the camera lens directly the seam on a can of soup. Then, slowly back it away until you hear the beep and feel the vibration. Make sure there is light in the area and you are not blocking it from the item. On Jul 25, 2012, at 3:33 PM, Eileen Misrahi wrote: Hi Rebecca, As Chuck stated, it's a matter of finding that darn bar code. Re: Voicebook
As it turns out, you have informed the developer without realizing it :) I happen to watch this forum from time to time. I haven't gotten a lot of reports of this behavior directly, but now that you mention it I believe I have heard a few people mention having a rough time and having to reboot to get in. I'll take a closer look at the linking up to Facebook routine.
