Subject: Need Help with Generating / Finding Audio Labels for Moving Boxes

Hello Everyone,

I need to find a way to generate some barcode labels or, perhaps, purchase some
barcode labels that I can slap on moving boxes.

My first solution was to use the Digit Eyes app but, after trying for over
2-hours, with three different computers, Including Windows 7, Windows 10, and
Mac OS Catalina, and 2 different laser printers, and, after purchasing the
blank Avery labels the developer said I should get, I cannot get the printed
barcodes to line up correctly on the actual labels. I am extremely
disappointed in this aspect of the digit Eyes app for iOS. The funny thing is
that the test print pages for Digit Eyes line up perfectly. It is the
generated PDF document that, even on screen, are not centered correctly. I was
told by the developer that they now generate their barcodes via Google.
Whatever! I have wasted enough time with Digit Eyes with regard to generating
audio labels.

Does anyone know of another off-the-shelf solution?

Can one buy pre-printed barcodes that one could use with Digit Eyes? Or some
other way I can reliably label boxes in order to have my phone tell me the
contents of the box?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

RE: Need Help with Generating / Finding Audio Labels for Moving Boxes

2020-05-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Eric,

Well, as it turned out, after about 3 hours of adjustments and testing, I was
finally, finally able to get the audio labels from Digit Eyes to print
correctly.

So, here is the problem: Some years back, Digit Eyes began out sourcing the
barcode generation of the labels to Google.

So, when you enter the type of labels you wish to print, say 3-across and
10-down, which equals 30 audio labels per page, that data is supposed to cause
Google to generate a PDF document formatted for said configuration, based on
the type of printer that is connected to your computer at the time of
generation.

In short, Google does not do this. Perhaps it did, years ago, but the API has
not been maintained. As a result, regardless of the type of printer, the codes
on the generated PDF document are not centered; in fact, they are skewed a
little too far to the right and down on the page.

My solution? Because I had sighted assistance, and because I am able to modify
the margins of the generated PDF document, I am now able to print the codes
correctly.

For example, when I am ready to print 1 page of labels, I crop 1 inch off of
the left margin and 0.375 inch off of the top. Then I save the PDF document
and print it. Remember, these numbers are for my printer, only. They would
probably be different on a different printer.

As I said, it took over 3-hours and about 10 sheets of test paper to discover
this solution but, discover it, I did.

The problem is that if one does not have sighted assistance, or the ability to
modify a PDF document, I don't see how one could generate more than 4 audio
labels per page, if that much.

Later this week, I will contact the developer to let her know my experience.

Hi Mark,

I totally feel your pain. I really like the Digit-Eyes app but have
not used it for years because I can’t get the audio labels to work reliably and
easily.

I have not found Way Around to be a good solution because the tags need
to be ordered and they can be expensive when trying to label many items.
More then that, at least, last time I checked, they were not a audio labeler,
they only allowed for you to enter text. I find this very limiting.

I’m hoping for a better labeling iPhone solution in the future.

One interesting app you can look at that is free is Navilense. I hope I
spelled that correctly. It was recommended to me as a free audio labeling
solution. You print the labels yourself. You can use the sheets you purchased
for Digit-Eyes. They are a unique system designed to work for the visually
impaired. I must admit they worked very well for me. They are designed for
the phone to pick up the label by the camera and do it easily, quickly and even
from long distances.

they just came out with a second pack of free labels. So perhaps this
might be a good solution.

I’d love a NFC solution like Way Around to have an audio labeling option and
maybe an option for use of less expensive third party NFC tags.

I hope this helps. Try the Navilense app and let us know how it goes.

Personally, I've not had any trouble with the section index. However, if it is
not working correctly for you then you can accomplish the same thing using the
search feature in contacts. Just double tap it and put the first one or two
letters in and you should see results associated with those two letters.

Re: Qardio arm app

2020-05-11 Thread Mary Otten
OK. The link that Bobby sent is the correct one. I had actually seen that, but
over thought the whole thing. I was really thinking the app wouldn’t have such
a general description in the beginning. But I didn’t read far enough. I guess
all‘s well that ends well, if my device shows up on time from eBay.

I just ordered this blood pressure monitor, so I went to the App Store to
try to find the app. I have searched underqardio, qardioarm with and
without the space between oh and a. I’m not coming up with anything. Lots
of apps, but not one that specifically looks like it’s for this device.
And I was definitely under the impression I needed an app. What am I doing

Re: NFB news online and KNFB reader.

2020-05-11 Thread deidre muccio
oh good, I'm glad someone knows that there have been some changes made since I
first downloaded that app. I've been using it forever until the new phone when
I downloaded it again. But it's got all these things in there that I didn't put
in there and it won't let me delete them. That's when I wrote bob Watson and he
told me I needed to get it through test flight and it is somehow linked to knFB
reader. i used to have that scanning program but I deleted it ages ago and use
voice dream scanner. I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens. All I'm
interested in are my favorite publications. I certainly don't need another
scanning program.

Qardio arm app

2020-05-11 Thread Mary Otten
I just ordered this blood pressure monitor, so I went to the App Store to try
to find the app. I have searched underqardio, qardioarm with and without the
space between oh and a. I’m not coming up with anything. Lots of apps, but not
one that specifically looks like it’s for this device. And I was definitely
under the impression I needed an app. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Section Index.

2020-05-11 Thread Marie
what problems do you have with it? It works, as far as I know, the same way
it worked when first introduced and on every phone I have used.
First, go to the top of the screen, swipe right till you hear, "section
index". flick down until you hear the letter of the alphabet you want,
double tap on it and you are taken to the header for that letter. Swipe
right to the contact.

I have no issues whatsoever with this feature.

Do any of you have problems sometimes with Section Index
just going into the regular contact list? With some 200-odd
contacts, it is a little annoying, especially, since I had
gotten so used to just using Section Index.

RE: NFB news online and KNFB reader.

2020-05-11 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Deidre,
I don't know what NFB is doing with Newsline and KNFB Reader. It has been in
beta for almost a year I think.
They never, ever, ever, respond to feedback. Maybe they are still suckering
people into buying the $100 version of KNFB Reader so don't want to make the
free version that is blended into Newsline widely available.

But, is it like the old version of KNFB, kind of.
It is "KNFB Basic." Which can do basic scans, but Voice Dream Reader is easier
and better for 99% of what I do.
And, sadly typical of NFB, the app is done very oddly.
Screen number 4 or Page 4, is where you enter your Newsline sign in information.
Also where you set the speaking rate.
Then on that same 4th page is the KNFB Reader Basic settings like automatically
recognize text, Automatically speak text, The theme color.

Page 3 or screen number 3, is where you actually use KNFB Reader Basic.
Screen or page 2 is where you access the things like Information sources, your
states info, breaking news, information from other states, etc.

Screen or page 1, is where you do your Newsline reading of your favorites.

In my opinion; and I said this to them several times through the betas, they
have it basAkwards.

The Newsline portion works great though, until it crashes. After sending in
feedback, it works great again for quite a while.

As for the getting around in an email, yes, the extra stuff is just above the
keyboard, just below the message text.

First make sure your bluetooth device is powered on and connected.
Next go to settings and bluetooth. Next choose more info for the

2020-05-11 Thread deidre muccio
can someone please explain to me what's going on with NFB news online? Now it
has to be accessed through test flight and some other additional step needs to
be taken. Does it look like the old app that used to work so beautifully on my
old phone?I'm afraid to even try to do it the new way to get at the beta
version which is what Bob Watson from NFB is telling me I need to do.
I might be getting the hang of dictating and moving around in a male message.
It appears as if I touch above the top row of letters that's where all that
other stuff is to change formatting insert pictures etc. Am I right about that?

Hi Deidre. iOS 13.4.1, is the latest update.

Also, i think you mean, the iPhone SE, not SC.

Richard, I am indeed using the new SC with 13.4.1. There's one more update
I could do. I don't didn't have any trouble with the success using an
issue even earlier version of 13. I think part of the problem when writing
a message you're trying to edit something in a Gmail mail message, is that
I am activating inadvertently the text formatting or all those things that
try and insert themselves like do you want to insert a picture or do you
want to do some kind of text formatting and then it just throws me just
the whole voiceover thing no longer is working with the text that I had
started writing. And like just now I'm dictating this for a second time.
Somehow it just got deleted, the whole message. i'm afraid to even go back
and try and edit this now for fear it's going to do something quirky all
over again. So please excuse the errors in this message. God how I miss my
PC and outlook which I am responsible for corrupting after trying to
delete 27,000 messages or at least go through 27,000 messages to get rid
of the things that were hidden in an unread folder that were copies of
other things that I have long since deleted. My mistake.

I personally love the new SE.

with IOS 13.4.1 is, I called Apple Accessibility this morning to sort out
what features I might be able to eliminate and to demo the kinds of voice
over problems I was having. We screen shared so that the person at the
other end of the line could see what was happening on my screen in real
 time.
Remember now that I have updated from using an I phone 6 with 12.4.6,
which did everything I wanted, other than turn on location tracking with
Seeri which has only become possible with IOS 13_ - that gets one gold
star in my book. The screen on the 6 is shattered and the ringer stopped
working quite some time ago, and some sounds and notifications were no
longer spoken, even though the actual function of receiving and sending
calls and mail and messages continued to work just fine.
I bought a cheap iPhone 6S that has 13.13.2.3 on to serve in the interim
before the SE came out. It's been weeks now, so I can't recall if the 6S
with 13.2.3 threw me any curve balls, but the SE with IOS 13.4.1 is
 driving me crazy.
One of my main gripes has to do with mail. I use gmail on the new phone as
I did on the 6 and it has become a nightmare to write, read then edit
messages. I get these spontaneous spoken invitations to format text,
insert a picture, and other things others must also be seeing, at least if
they are using gmail on their SE's. I often cannot back space character by
character to read or delete text, or select text in any block. This can be
true for rereading text as well where I get thrown all over the place and
the cursor, seems to be somewhere other than where I am reading from, or
where voice over lead me to believe I was. I sometimes suspect it might be
trying to correct something even though I have all that turned off.
Then there is that insistent vertical scroll bar that gets activated all
the time when what I thought I was doing was simply reading text whether
it be on Facebook or in any other App.
The same voice over inaccuracy and jumpiness comes into play using Safari
which is the browser Apple uses. The Accessibility person said it was the
fault of the web site not voice over that, by way of example, when Voice
over told me that I was in a live edit field, and when I went to type in
my search criteria, I was bounced all over the place. This happened on the
Hadley site which is a learning tools service for the Blind. What the
person at the other end of the phone line saw was that I was not in an
edit field at all, but that I was in a green box with nothing in it.

Richard, no I'm not using the Gmail app. Some of the apps really streamlined
some of those things that I really like to use, and some don't work well at
all. So no I only did it the way you suggested and I'm still getting all kinds
of weird editing issues. Who knows, maybe things will settle down soon. I hope
so.

First, the Apple advisor was wrong. The confusing edit box messages on web
pages is an Apple issue, which I understand is fixed in 13.5 when it comes out.
If you are going to stick with the Gmail app, you will likely continue finding

Re: Need Help with Generating / Finding Audio Labels for Moving Boxes

2020-05-11 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Tracey,

Thank you for posting the link.

As the topic has been brought up. What I’m hoping for is a NFC audio
tag recorder and reader. Basically it could use the iPhone to do what the Pen
friend does without needing a extra device.

NFC is built into the phone and perfect for this application. It is the tech
apple uses for Apple Pay in stores and developers have access to it.

It is what Wayaround uses only they do text only and also use proprietary tags
instead of mainstream tags. They also seem to not be interested in adding
audio recording only text.

I contacted Digit-eyes about this before COVID19 and I thought they
were considering using it but over two monthss have gone by and I have not
heard any updates.

I also wrote to Way around twice about 6 months apart asking if they would be
adding Audio recording. I didn’t get a response.

NFC Near Field Communication, I believe has the best solution for audio and
text labeling on the iPhone. Navilens has the potential to use the camera to
identify it’s tags at a distance. This might be also useful but I think more
so for other applications. Still, it works quickly and affordably
.

Also, I was wondering as a potential solution, could you create your own bar

Re: Capturing iPhone VoiceOver for a Zoom conference

2020-05-11 Thread Richard Turner
I do know that the computer mic can pick up the VoiceOver speech as I teach
some clients how to use VoiceOver by connecting with their computer via Zoom
since they only have the iPhone for calls.
However, if you need the iPhone connected to the same meeting, be very sure you
have the iPhone zoom audio muted or you will get very loud feedback.

It appears that Logitech k480 is one of the devices that cannot be renamed. The
article mentions that some cannot.
Too bad.
I hope your 380's can.

Please let us know if this works. I can't be positive that it will,
but it makes sense to me that it might. If not I'll see what else I
can think of. Have you ever used Google services on your phone that
would require you to add your Gmail account? If you have, there's a
chance that you could have duplicate contact entries coming from both
Google and iCloud. In this case you can turn off syncing of your
Google contacts. We'll go down that road if my first suggestion
doesn't solve your issue.

So when you go into your iCloud under settings and your name, you
should see where it shows you everything that's using iCloud with the
ability to toggle it off. So you would turn it off and then go make
the changes to your contact and hit done. Then go turn the iCloud
setting back on for contacts and it should sync the correct stuff
over to iCloud and hopefully make your contact the way you want it.

Mark

RE: GPS Apps for hiking?

2020-05-11 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I don’t know about walking tracks in your country

But I wouldn’t rely on gps apps for walking tracks here in n new Zealand,

If you don’t turn in the right place it’s a sudden stop at the bottom of a 1000
foot drop,
Or the track that was there yesterday,
Is missing some critical section tomorrow.

Kelly is right, it would be better for the friend to join the list; but beyond
that, one of the first things you are presented with when you first use any GPS
app, is the warning to not rely solely on a GPS device.
Anyone who does so, is asking to get lost or worse.
Perhaps a call to Aira, since they could look at a map of their location and
get an idea what's around.
The bottom line is GPS accuracy can range from 30 feet to several hundred feet
depending on the location, weather, and quality of the receiver.
That and the travel skills of the person using it.

Hello, I have a question on GPS Apps. Using Blind square, or any of the

Google Maps includes bike and hiking trails so it can offer turn by turn
directions on these. Would you be on designated trails or hiking in areas
off trail?

Re: help with getting rid of a number

2020-05-11 Thread Gordon
Please let us know if this works. I can't be positive that it will, but
it makes sense to me that it might. If not I'll see what else I can
think of. Have you ever used Google services on your phone that would
require you to add your Gmail account? If you have, there's a chance
that you could have duplicate contact entries coming from both Google
and iCloud. In this case you can turn off syncing of your Google
contacts. We'll go down that road if my first suggestion doesn't solve
your issue.

So when you go into your iCloud under settings and your name, you
should see where it shows you everything that's using iCloud with the
ability to toggle it off. So you would turn it off and then go make
the changes to your contact and hit done. Then go turn the iCloud
setting back on for contacts and it should sync the correct stuff over
to iCloud and hopefully make your contact the way you want it.

or, you could call Apple Accessibility's 24 hour number to see if
they have an idea: 877-204-3930

I can't say for sure, but perhaps turning off iCloud for contacts,
making the contact the way you want it and then turning it back on
might solve the issue.

as the one I want.  I deleted the contact completely and re entered
their details but it is still coming up with the other number.  any
help please?  Janet
