I have recently noticed Officeworks advertising Samsung SSD 500GB for $98.00.
And more recently WD SSD 500GB for $79.00.
So just a cautionary note.
Upon investigation I found that they are probably older models.
The transfer speed for the advertised WD SSD is 400 mb/s whilst the

when Mac is in sleep mode.

As far as I am aware Power Nap will not power on a USB drive. When your Mac is
plugged into AC power, Power Nap can perform things like Time Machine backups

You can usually salvage quite useable 3.5 IDE drives out of Wintel boxes
I'm sure you'd still be able to find those drives 2nd hand off ebay if your
happy to pay for the postages. Would probably be quite cheap too. I think
you'd be better off getting a new enclosure with the drive rather than trying
to use your old IDE one though.

Yeah power usage is one of the huge advantages that SSD holds over traditional
drives. At the moment I feel that SSD can only be justified for a laptop and
that's one of the big reasons. I don't think you'd want to use an SSD to do
alot of eyetv recording though since they are limited
for the 2x500 dual
disc once 1TB single drives became very affordable.
My main backup is handled by the two-pronged clone/time machine approach.
I¹m still playing with the dropbox and idisk options.

I have a G4 Dual 450 Processor and I need to put bigger drives into
it apparently you can only put in 120gb drives unless you install a
RAID card
any advice?

That is true Peter. But you are better off putting in a SATA card
instead, then you have access to much bigger drives without resorting
to raid.
