Re: G4 tower problems

What about swapping out the one component you haven't mentioned yet,
The CD Drive!
If your getting different issues I'd say its to do with the Mac
reading the CD

That's my thinking anyway :)

Why don't you remove all except a minimum single 128 Mb piece

I would guess you have a stick of Ram that is dicey ,
OR a Ram socket causing problems

IF you are in trouble with that piece of Ram , try another piece ,

Microsoft Passport

2006-05-05 Thread Christian Kotz
Has anyone else noticed issues with microsoft's passport system for
accessing their Hotmail inboxes?
In the last 2 weeks, I've found that MSN no longer directs me to my
inbox and automatically logs in as it use to and the hotmail login
screen I'm redirected to also loops once password and username are
entered as in it runs through the inbox url to hotmail.com then back
to the live login page again. The only way for me to access my inbox
is through my history and a bookmarked link to my inbox.
Is it possible that the login page has been updated and Macs are
unable to correctly communicate with the new site?
My sister has the same issue with her inbox on another computer so
I'm just wondering if its to do with our home network dial up
connection or if anyone else has experienced it

Re: Webcam Support

2006-04-19 Thread Christian Kotz
the problem is not the webcam device itself but the Applications you
want to use a webcam with.
The only webcams you can use in Mac OS X have to be firewire based in
order to be recognised. This means only an iSight or a firewire
camcorder can be used. The IOXio group I htink they call themselves
have written a USB driver to support a large assortment of
unsupported USB webcams but as I said initially, It's not the device
that's the problem, its application support for them.
Currently iChat and Yahoo Messenger are the only Applications to
support Webcams and Yahoo does it without Audio streaming. Well known
instant messenger services like MSN Messenger Mac still haven't
included webcam support but lets not complain I mean their latest
release did include display picture support :)

Re: Apple supports booting XP

2006-04-06 Thread Christian Kotz
The CD is for your mac to burn the appropriate Hardware drivers for
Windows onto the CD from the Boot Camp utility. Once you install XP
on the Windows Partition, boot it, put in the now no-longer blank CD
and it instantly installs the Windows drivers. Its kinda like the
Virtual PC additions installation and is needed for the Mac to make
up for hardware differences like an eject button on CD drives and
other little issues like brightness controls for iMacs

Are the Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse supported? All I'm reading is an

Apple Introduces Boot Camp

Public Beta Software Enables Intel-based Macs to Run Windows XP
CUPERTINO,

California April 5, 2006Apple today introduced Boot Camp, public beta
software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. Available
as a
download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with a Microsoft
Windows

XP installation disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac, and
once installation is complete, users can restart their computer to run
either Mac OS X or Windows XP. Boot Camp will be a feature in
Leopard,

Apples next major release of Mac OS X, that will be previewed at Apple
s Worldwide Developer Conference in August.

Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many
customers
have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple s superior
hardware
now that we use Intel processors, said Philip Schiller, Apple s
senior
vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. We think Boot Camp
makes

the Mac even more appealing to

Windows users considering making the switch.

Boot Camp simplifies Windows installation on an Intel-based Mac by
providing a simple graphical step-by-step assistant application to
dynamically create a second partition on the hard drive for
Windows, to
burn a CD with all the necessary Windows drivers, and to install
Windows

from a Windows XP installation CD. After installation is complete,
users can choose to run either Mac OS X or Windows when they restart
their computer.

Pricing Availability
The public beta of Boot Camp is available immediately as a download at
www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp, and is preview software licensed for
use

on a trial basis for a limited time. The final version of Boot Camp
will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5
Leopard. Apple does not provide support for installing or running Boot
Camp and does not sell or support Microsoft Windows software. Apple
welcomes user feedback on Boot Camp at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

System Requirements
Boot Camp requires an Intel-based Mac with a USB keyboard and mouse,
or a built-in keyboard and TrackPad; Mac OS X version 10.4.6 or
later; the latest firmware update; at least 10GB of free space on the
startup disk; a blank recordable CD or DVD; and single-disc version
of Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or
later.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the
Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the
Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation
with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating
system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also
spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable
music players and iTunes online music store.

firewire on G4 Cube

2006-02-09 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi All

just wondering if anyone has any clues on why only one of the two
firewire ports on my Cube choose to function. The port closest to the
USB and Monitor connectors is the one that appears to have trouble
transferring data. When my iPod is connected to it, the iPod only
charges rather than docks and camcorder isn't recognised either when
connected to it. The second port works fine connecting iPod and
docking it into iTunes and camcorder is recognised in iMovie etc. I
thought it may have been dirty connectors inside the port so I've
cleaned it and checked it all out but still no life. I'd prefer to
have 2 ports so I could leave both firewire devices constantly
connected as it is a real hastle to connect and disconnect any cables
on the cube but I need to swap the firewire leads regularly with only
one port.

Powerbook Pismo's

2005-10-24 Thread Christian Kotz
I was wondering if anyone out there can offer some advice on an issue I
have with a Powerbook G3 Pismo 400mhz. Basically the unit crashes a few
seconds into startup as is just when the flashing folder comes up it
jams and that's it or if I boot from CD it sits on a grey screen. It
boots and stays on when open firmware terminal is invoked
(command-option-o-f) and I can continue typing etc without a problem
but if I tell it to mac-boot it's back to the crash on first folder
flash. Also firewire target disk mode works fine without freezing it's
just the computer running naturally that causes the issues. I can't do
anything with it apart from Open Firmware and Firewire target.. as I
just freezes up and has to be forcefully shut down or reset. I've tried
NVRAM resets, Set-defaults commands and reset-all in Open Firmware as
well as PRAM resets, cold resets and removed backup battery/PRAM
battery, main battery and CD module but still no improvement. Also
wiped Hard Drive which meant the flashing folder crashed a few
nanoseconds later than it did initially where I could only see a blank
blue folder. I hope this kinda makes sense and that someone has some
possible fixes they can offer. I'd like to revive this laptop as it is
a feature packed unit :)

Re: Powerbook Pismo's

2005-10-24 Thread Christian Kotz

They are very valid points.
It was running OS 9.2.2 until the HD began dying as it had bad blocks
and a tendency to lock up as if over heated. I then booted from another
OS X volume through firewire. It was running fine but then I restarted
and the OS X spun it's volleyball while loading the desktop and crashed
so I shut down the laptop (force shutdown-10 second power press) tried
restarting from OS X installer disc and I think at that point the issue
began. I just got a grey screen so I put the old HD in and tried
booting from OS 9 installer CD for Powerbook. Still grey screened. I
restarted to let it boot from HD and expected the temporary flashing
folder as it wasn't the selected boot volume but instead I got a blank
folder as if the 'blessed' image were about to flash on it but is froze
before displaying it. After erasing internal HD and zeroing data the
blessed image appears on folder then machine crashes. I also tried a
set-env boot device string in open firmware that I copied off the
internet from another Pismo user but I don't think it did anything. Its
firmware is 4.1.8 I believe. I don't have Disk Warrior but judging by
the rejection of all other CD's I don't think it will boot it. I hope
that allows for a better analysis of my situation

reset. I've tried NVRAM resets, Set-defaults commands and reset-all
in Open Firmware as well as PRAM resets, cold resets and removed
backup battery/PRAM battery, main battery and CD module but still no
improvement. Also wiped Hard Drive which meant the flashing folder
crashed a few nanoseconds later than it did initially where I could
only see a blank blue folder. I hope this kinda makes sense and that
someone has some possible fixes they can offer. I'd like to revive
this laptop as it is a feature packed unit :)

Christian,

You say nothing about the OS you are trying to start up from !

When it was running, what OS was it running ?

What firmware does it have ?

What OS on the CD you are trying to start from ?

Will it start up from DIsk Warrior ?

I woke up to it after software update. Gee, talk about nightmare! All
the columns are gone and its so industrial. Who said it was a

I was surprised to see no colour change to the currently green music

Harman Kardon iSub

2005-08-29 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi All
Anyone know who would be responsible for repairing Harman Kardon
iSub's, the USB Mac specific versions. I'd imagine it would be the same
people who fix JBL Creatures and HK Soundsticks. I'm just wondering as
my iSub has developed an unusual 'buzz' like the sound electronic
interference/noise that continues when computer is off. Only way to
silence it is to mute the computer while it's on.

Any ideas?

Apple Multiple Scan 15AV

Hi All,
Does anyone know where I can get a video cable for an Apple

a spare lead, or dead monitor they could harvest the cable from?
I'd be very grateful as I depended on it for a G3 tower and it's the
only screen I have to use on it.

Console Mac OS X.3 on G3's

2005-06-11 Thread Christian Kotz
Anyone know how I can stop console from generating randomly sized log's
namely the log titled console.log that syphons off my Hard drives

All other console logs remain around 4kb but this one seems to grow

recover the space by moving the log to the trash, restarting and
emptying the trash after reboot. It's a little annoying especially

I'm talking a growth from 4KB to 2.5GB and 3GB. The thing is it's
unrecognisable and caused console to crash when opening the massive
log. I'm getting the same issue on 3 G3's that are connected to
internet over Airport and when left on over night generate 3 gig of
logging that syphons all hard drive space. Restart recovers say 300MB
and deleting the log recovers all space.

Hi Ken,

Stick to an Intel over the AMD for those apps. Just a little more
stable. Obviously faster the better for the processor, so anything
over 3Ghz Pent IV (get a full Pentium, not a cobbled Celeron). After
the dramas I had with Gigabyte boards in the past, I'd have a look at
an ASUS. Then look at your graphics card (so many more choices here
for PC - and cheaper!). If you can, go for a motherboard that
supports PCI Express. Then check out the latest Radeons and NVidia
cards. And plenty of ram.

And one other thing - if this machine is just for straight video and
still editing, keep it off the internet! Windows seems to run s
much better when disconnected.. :-)

BTW, for better advice, have a gander at some of the PC mags, such as
APC, PC Magazine, Australian PC World. They all quite frequently have
reviews on the latest and greatest for the PC. Also have a look at
this site:

http://www.overclockers.com.au/

Good hardware review site, and with a forum that might be a better
place to post looking for the best PC specs for the job.

Definitely SPAM. eBay don't have a Billing Department as they aren't
involved in transactions. Also you can bid on different machines in
different locations so of course the IP wanders and bids are made from
different ones. 'Offline', yet online verification...hmm Says it all

Hi all,

This morning I received this email, purportedly from ebay:

Dear eBay Member,
We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your eBay
account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to believe that
your account was used by a third party without your authorization. If
you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual login
attempts may have been initiated by you

The login attempt was made from:
IP address: 172.25.210.66
ISP Host: cache-66.proxy.aol.com

By now, we used many techniques to verify the accuracy of the
information our users provide us when they register on the Site.
However, because user verification on the Internet is difficult, eBay
cannot and does not confirm each user's purported identity. Thus, we
have established an offline verification system o help you evaluate
with who you are dealing with. below:

https://arribada.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?PlaceCCInfo

If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your
ability to sell or bid on eBay will become restricted.

Thank you

The eBay Billing Deptartment .

I was just wondering if this seems slightly suspect (I know fake bank
emails have a similar kind of content) or if it's kosher.

eBay billing deptartment?

Re: iMac G5

From what I heard, It was the the first wave of iMac G5's that had
issues as Apple had part shortages and grabbed them from anywhere. This
issue was rectified after these models shipped and Apple US had PSU
recalls at Apple Centre's. There is a discussion about it somewhere but
it was regarding models shipping in the first December I think?? Anyway
the more recent ones doesn't have the issue.

iMac SE issues

2005-04-24 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi All
Anyone have any ideas what may be causing the following issues in an
iMac DV SE and how to rectify them:

3 strikes before powering up, I have to reset it twice before the
screen will come on and the chime happens

Surging/flickering in speakers, they buzz and make a flickering sound
even when the iMac is shut down and head phone in

Visible screen refresh, the centre of the screen is clear but the edges
seem to roll and quake. I think that has something to do with the kinks
in the black cable that surround the CRT for some magnetic thing???

crashing in fullscreen mode for most Open GL games especially games
that launch movies

It is using an older IDE HD taken from a beige G3 and I received it
dismantled so more than likely there's static discharge damage

extra info: running 128MB RAM, OS 9.2, 4.2 GB HD rather than 13GB

Anyone else had extreme issues like this or know what's the best option
apart from part harvesting or trash? Is there hope?

By three strikes, if you mean three beeps, then this normally means
bad RAM.
If you've got 2 RAM chips in it then I would take one out. Otherwise I
would
take it out and replace it with another and see if it does the same
thing.
By the sound of it there may be other issues, but I would rule this
one out

first. :o)

Hope that helps.

Hard Drive space disapearance

2005-02-14 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi All
Just emailing because as of last night my iBook is losing HD space. It
got down to zero KB and I had a word doc to save so I deleted 400MB of
space but as I did it was chewed up instantly. I then attacked my music
direct from the itunes folder and did a secure delete which liberated
250MB of space so I finally could save. Today I was using it and
deleted 35Mb of files which actually used a further 35MB of HD after
emptying the trash. A few more deletions and all of the sudden I have
only 80MB available. It had 3.4 GB 2 days ago. Any ideas where its
going? It's only happened since 10.3.8 and this laptop doesn't like it.
I've already had a screen resolution bug which I think had something to
do with the Ati Driver updates. Not having much luck with this
Clamshell but would like its space back. Thankful for any assistance.

Base Station (Snow) and then they continue to boot, otherwise the
finder fails to load and on goes the spinning. Is it Internet related
like Mac OS X now uses an Internet connection even though the base
station isn't dialed, thus the confusion? I've notice a trend were

Re: pricing a S/H P29 G3 iBook

2004-07-13 Thread Christian Kotz
To avoid the whole blowing up motherboards and spontaneous combustion
of other parts, why not settle for a nice iBook SE 466mhz. It has
firewire therefore can charge your iPod and it's battery does last
longer apparently. There's a few of them for under $500 on ebay but a
lot of people still like the model so when selling it could get more.
I'm using a Lime currently and it does me fine for tasks similar to
yours as well as more demanding and it's case is sturdy for travel.
Acting as a portable DVD player is a nice feature too. They've all been
on lease or something so they should be a little looked after.

I prefer them over the 500mhz.

investment purposes. So I will like you to be the
person taking delivery, so that the funds can be moved in your name
and particulars to any country of your choice where it will be claimed

personnel that the owner of the consingment is his foreign partner
whose particulars will be forwarded to the firm when due.
But I will guide you accordingly. As soon as the fund reaches, I will
then come over to meet you in person, so that we can discuss
physically on Investment entials. Based on this instance I and my
family have unanimously decided to give you 20% of the total funds, 2%
for charity homes and 3% for expenses, which may arise during the
transaction, fax and phone bills inclusive. The balance of 75% you
will invest and manage for my family. I hereby guarantee you that this
is not government funds, it is not drug funds and it is not funds
from arms deal.

Safari

2003-10-26 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi
Is anyone else having issues with Safari? It constantly tells me that
the server can not be found and after a period or seven clicks on
links and punches on the return key it eventually attempts loading
pages. It usually displays page fine but all this week it's been
touchy. Any ideas as to what it's caused by? I recently put 10.2.8 on
but it couldn't be that could it?

Lisa's Fate

2003-10-16 Thread Christian Kotz

Is this statement I located true?

in 1989 Apple buried thousands of Lisa's in landfill. Lisa was gone.

Sounds a bit nasty. Anyone planning a excavation soon? if this is
true and Apple didn't like them then why is everyone after one?

Freezing mouse

2003-05-26 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi
Does anyone have any ideas why my apple puck mouse keeps freezing in
OS X? I'm using an iMac DV and it's just become apparent the mouse
freezes on screen and occasionally for long periods of time. I've
tried swapping keyboards and the port it's plugged into but it still
happens. Is it an Issue with this model mouse or is mine individual?
It's a little annoying and it's my only mouse. It gets worst when
more applications are open.

Virtual PC 6

2003-05-02 Thread Christian Kotz

Hi
I was wondering if anyone out there has used Virtual PC 6 and
understands some issues I'm facing.
When ever I use it and make the PC restart the program closes and
when I go to re-launch it, an error occurs or in some cases my
computer freezes. It works fine until the windows system is restarted
but then becomes corrupt. Any Ideas on a cure?

Mac Games

2003-04-20 Thread Christian Kotz
Does anyone out there have a copy of the full versions for either The
Sims or Sheep or know where I can get one? Do any Apple stores stock
them and for how much?

Thanks.
