On 3/12/06, keith_w [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: That one is a genuine perplexer, Frank! Good catch! Question: How come no-one in any of your street pictures ever looks at you? Thanks for the nice words, Keith. As far as people not looking at me, you know, it's funny, but I was thinking about that on the weekend, at my photolab, looking at negs. The photo I chose for next week's PAW features a couple of typical Canadians (draw your own conclusions...g) watching an outdoor hockey game. I shot off about 4 or 5 of them, and for three of them, neither was looking at me. For 2 shots, one of them may have been looking at me (but it's hard to tell due to his mirrored sunglasses). I do know that neither of them said a thing to me, nor did they acknowledge my presence, even though I was standing about 5 feet from them, snapping away. They had to have known I was there... I know that most of my street photos the subject isn't looking at me - at least not when I snap. I think that if I have a choice of several frames taken of a scene, I'll often choose those frames that the subject's looking away - I have the feeling that it looks more natural that way. Sometimes I'm going out of my way to be stealthy, shooting from the hip or with camera on my knee, not looking through the viewfinder. Other times, I'm taking one quick shot (as with this one), and moving along, so I doubt I'm even noticed. But a surprising number of times I've got camera up to face, I'm doing nothing stealthy, and they just pretend I'm not there. I'm guessing that at least a couple of things come into play. First of all, the vast majority of my shooting is done with my Leica CL, and that's such an unobtrusive little thing, it doesn't intimidate people. It's much smaller than any DSLR, but it's not so small as a digi-ps, so I think most people know it's a film camera. It's obviously an older camera, looking much like a 10 or 15 year old 35mm ps, and who takes serious photos with those? So, I think that's part of the equation. Another part of the equation is that I act natural. I'm not making a big deal about shooting, I'm not going out of my way to look like I'm being secretive, I'm just there. While I wouldn't say that it puts people at ease, I'd say that it doesn't make them uneasy. And, as I said, I think that I choose to shoot when they're looking away, or perhaps choose the neg where they're looking away. Anyway, thanks for the nice words, and thanks to everyone else who commented. It was a one-time fun grab, but I was pleased with it. I even cropped it some! g cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson

The brokerage fee will be charged on the cheaper UPS rate, but if you go for the UPS express for a few dollars more then brokerage is included and you will just pay the GST/PST on delivery. The USPS worldwide express tends to be around the same price as UPS express so if you want the item a bit quicker then either is a pretty safe choice. You are absolutely right Cotty, it is a spatula. But what do you use, when the spatula is in the dishwasher? If your hands are clean. Right, you use your index finger. Thats why the index finger is called slikkepott (among other names) in Norway. Enough ranting about nothing. The objective is the lens at the end of the tube nearest the specimen. The ocular (eyepiece) is at the other end. There are often lenses, polarizers, analyzers and prisms in between. Objectives might have up to a dozen elements -- like the lenses of cameras. The eyepieces have at least three often six or seven pieces of glass in the case of Leitz Periplan and other very special (and expensive) oculars. Ebay bought Paypal a while back - isn't that right? It sounds like the seller owe money to ebay (listing fees etc. ?) So, ebay/Paypal is blocking the seller?? Thank you, Jack. One of the guys on another list responded: No question but that it's a camellia japonica, Godfrey, but just what varietal is open to debate! I see it has a few blushes of white so that means it's a variegated blossom. The tight stamens in the center, the shade of red and the splotches of white suggest a Gigantea which is an old standby of 75 years (or more) ago but it doesn't look large enough to be that. That variety's name was derived from the fact it produced huge blossoms, generally six-eight inches across. Always a beautiful flower, the camellia. best, Godfrey On Mar 13, 2006, at 12:16 PM, Jack Davis wrote: Very unique (to me) blossom. Pedal layering is not something I've often noticed. Re: Paying problems at eBay.
The paypal site (login first) should give you an option add funds. It probably lists a local norwegian back account where you should transfer the money (don't forget to include the special numbers they supply you. Once the money is transferred (one or more days) you should see your money in your paypal account as funds. After that you can pay the seller using your funds (and not your credit card). It works for me, no idea if paypal is offering this service to Norway. Toine On 3/13/06, Tim Øsleby [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm very new to this. How do I do that? Re: Novoflex any good? (Was:Advice on long glass for, photodoc on beachbirds)
Tim, I think you are pretty much spot-on with the advantages and disadvantages of Novoflex lenses, and I was surprised at the rather negative response your question to the list generated. Of course an FA* 600mm lens will be better, but it's also a million times more expensive. For an inexpensive route into bird photography, which is what you wanted, I believe a Novoflex system still takes a lot of beating, especially as using it on a DSLR will mean that the unsharp edges are largely removed. Bear in mind, too, that Pentax DSLR AF performance with long lenses has been criticised. How nice to avoid the problem altogether. The fact that the lens doesn't communicate with the body is also something of a non-issue. These are quite slow lenses, and you will want to use them wide-open. Av mode will work perfectly. I too would be very interested to hear of users' experiences. John On Mon, 13 Mar 2006 00:50:40 -, Tim Øsleby [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I decided not to go for Novoflex. Not because I think they are bad, but because of the problems with adapters. But on my way to this conclusion I read a bit. If I'm not mistaken Novoflex had a rather odd, but sensible designing philosophy. They are mainly designed for shooting wildlife. Wildlife photographers wanted better focusing. A focus system that made the photographer able to follow a fast moving subject. (That's an enablement;-)) They also wanted to make high quality glass. High quality glass is expensive. To prevent prising themselves completely out of the marked they based the design on the idea that wildlife shooters most of the time cropped the frame. And this is where it gets odd. Based on this Novoflex decided didn't have to think about edge performance. The result is, state of the art centre performance, and crappy edges. Does this sound familiar? Yeah, it does to me. Now digital lenses are designed after the same criteria. If this is true, this is most likely the reason why the lenses have very good reputation among some old-timers, and other will not touch them with gloves. Anyway. The elders on list know a lot more about this than I do. I have decided against Novoflex for the moment. But I am curious about how they perform, both optically and focuscally. Please drop a line, and show some results. Tim Mostly harmless (just plain Norwegian) Never underestimate the power of stupidity in large crowds (Very freely after Arthur C. The biggest problem is finding a pentax novoflex adapter (it's labeled penta). My first test in the backyard looks very promising. In fact I'm impressed so far. On a istD I don't see any big lens errors during pixelpeeping. I don't have any long pentax glass to compare this oldie against. Now I only need to find time to shoot some wildlife. Re: Presense of Pentax
This shop is a Sigma pusher. I think they even import their own stock. At least there's no official, monopolist distributor of Sigma in Norway. The problem of people ignoring Pentax is the same in almost every Norwegian photo shop with assistants younger than age 40. In all their lifetime, Pentax has been a marginal brand, and they skipped the lessons where Pentax were taught. However, it's worth a couple of hours in the purgatory to claim that you have a Pentax medium format system, even if you don't. Just watch their expressions go from overly self confident to uncertain. Once, one assistant at Lømorks (just two blocks away from the said shop) went all red and muttered and here I go bragging to a pro :-) Jostein - Original Message - From: Tim Øsleby [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Sent: Monday, March 13, 2006 4:21 PM Subject: RE: Presense of Pentax I don't have that experience.
