[gentoo-user] Where are the suspend2 options in suspend2-sources-2.6.14-r1-3
Hi When I updrade my kernel from suspend2-sources-2.6.14 to -r1 or r3 all options for SUSPEND2 are gone. I have tried with make oldconfig and make menuconfig. Is there a purpose behind that? I had to edit my config file and to add the options. [gentoo-user] Spamassassin 3.1 now fails...
A few days I 'updated world' and spamassassin 3.04 was replaced by spamassassin 3.1 - after a few minutes spent migrating my configuration (to enable Razor,Pyzor and DCC) all seemed to be working well... but then, after running fine for a day or two, the spamd daemon stopped responding and started writing an error about syswrite(7) to the system log every few seconds: -- Nov 24 00:31:12 gifu postfix/qmgr[3563]: 9ADC2137F91: removed Nov 24 00:31:12 gifu spamd[26279]: prefork: child states: BBBII Nov 24 00:31:14 gifu postfix/smtpd[24866]: disconnect from localhost[127.0.0.1] Nov 24 00:32:40 gifu spamd[26279]: prefork: syswrite(7) failed, retrying... at / usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.6/Mail/SpamAssassin/SpamdForkScaling.pm line 554. When I restart spamasssassin (i.e. /etc/init.d/spamd restart) the problem disappears - at least temporarily This is not a one-off occurrence - but I do not know what triggers the failure. On this occasion spamassasssin failed reporting syswrite(7) last time it reported syswrite(8) but otherwise behaviour was similar. The time at which the failure occurred does not seem to be relevant as while this time it was at just past midnight, previously it failed at 15:30. Does anyone else have this problem with Spamassassin 3.1? -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Best regards, jules Or, you could just change the /usr/src/symlink back to your currently-configured kernel, emerge gnupg, then change it (the symlink) back to point at the new, unconfigured kernel. I take it you're using the 'symlink' USE flag, which does this automatically. I usually do too, and had a similar problem with a different program just a week or two ago. Fortunately, I noticed that it was going to happen before the emerge proceeded (I was getting a new kernel, and upgrading the ati-drivers package, which I know must compile against a configured kernel), so I just disabled the 'symlink' USE flag for the new, about-to-be-downloaded kernel *only* (and learned that you can manage specific versions of an app in /etc/portage/package.use), so that the symlink was not changed, and the ati-drivers emerged normally against my current, configured kernel. Then I manually redirected the /usr/src/linux symlink to the new, uncompiled kernel for the later kernel upgrade. So I only had to do the redirect once, and it all worked out fine. Of course I had to re-emerge the ati-drivers, but that's normal anyway when upgrading a kernel. Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Yes (qualified yes), but 1) I'm training myself out of changing USE flags on the command line (though it would have been OK in this case, the reason I have a general policy is to keep to it, not except it :-) ) 2) I learned something (because I don't want to use USE= on the command line, I had to use package.use, which I didn't know up to that moment allowed specification of package versions. But I found that =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.13-r5 -symlink is actually valid, which is useful information, enabling me to turn the USE flag off for just this one emerge, without disturbing later kernels for which I want to keep the 'symlink' flag default enabled. Since this situation is not terribly likely to occur again-- an upgrade to the ati-drivers being offered in the same operation as a new kernel, given that the ati-drivers don't update that terribly often, and on a schedule, and since I often mask shiny-new kernels because the ati-drivers are generally unlikely to compile against them lately-- knowing that a 'oneshot mask' is possible in package.use is handy). So yes, it would have been easier to do it the way you say, but I find taking unexpected opportunities to explore the capabilities of Portage more valuable than doing things the easy way (sometimes). [gentoo-user] Successful Trac Install Using mod_python.
Hi all, I have just emerged Trac, and noticed that the Gentoo docs cover the cgi apache config, but not the mod_python config. In addition, the Gentoo emerge is v8.4, while the latest Trac is 9.1 - hence the docs on the Trac site are *too* recent, as the package structure has changed... But this is exactly what is needed in this case. =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.13-r5 -symlink is actually valid, which is useful information, enabling me to turn the USE flag off for just this one emerge, without disturbing later kernels for which I want to keep the 'symlink' flag default enabled. For example: snip I was able to to at least start mysql-5.0.15.ebuild, how would I select it out of the others thru emerge? Lots of ways-- to return to the stable build, try # echo 'dev-db/mysql x86' /etc/portage/package.keywords This will essentially change the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS setting for this package only to stable. You may also have to add settings for the dependencies, as they will still be unstable versions if you do not, and I don't know how well the stable mysql build plays with the unstable versions of its dependencies. To only allow version 5.0.15, try # echo 'dev-db/mysql-5.0.15' /etc/portage/package.mask This will mask all unstable versions above 5.0.15. You will have to be responsible for unmasking later versions when you feel that they have stabilized to your needs (meaning, you have to keep an eye on the status of the ebuilds, because even when later versions go stable, you won't have them available to you in Portage). So I would almost say go back to stable, and when the currently unstable upgrades become stable, just upgrade normally. Unless you have some burning reason to have version 5 now, today, no matter what the circumstances. I foolishly ran the last -u world with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 and have since set that globally. [gentoo-user] emerge --newuse misses package that new USE affects
I've googled and scanned recent messages archive of this list for this issue - if I'm blind, apologies in advance. I've changed some USE flags deliberately to add features to a package (in this case, apache). That package is also impacted by different ACCEPT_KEYWORDS flag (~86), which I've specified in /etc/portage/package.keywords Despite the USE change, I find that that apache is not being caught by emerge --newuse world. My expectation is that --newuse world will rebuild everything that a new USE impacts. So do I horribly misunderstand --newuse, or have I configured something wrong, or does it not work with package.keywords, or is there a bug someone would like more data on before I manually rebuild the various packages in in my system that need it and blow the symptoms away? Nope. You need a stage3 to build a stage1 with a new CHOST. In the faq (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#stage12) I find. How do I Install Gentoo Using a Stage1 or Stage2 Tarball? The Gentoo Handbook only describes a Gentoo installation using a stage3 tarball. However, Gentoo still provides stage1 and stage2 tarballs. This is for development purposes (the Release Engineering team starts from a stage1 tarball to obtain a stage3) but shouldn't be used by users: a stage3 tarball can very well be used to bootstrap the system. You do need a working Internet connection. It surprises me that release engineering starts with a stage1 to get a stage3 and then we use this stage3 to build a stage1. I mention this only out of curiosity; there is a stage3 with my desired CHOST and I expect to do all future installs starting with stage3 (I formerly used stage1). thanks, allan -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] masked package woes
Hello, Jffnms is masked. However I am able to install it on an intel portable by adding this line to the /etc/portage/package.keywords net-analyzer/jffnms ~x86 This is pretty must standard approach. However, on a gentoo system that I manually hacked a jffnms installation on on a very early (experimental) ebuild does not even show jffnms as a masked package. It intalled configuration file is /etc/jffnms, but I delete that dir and contents. Still I cannot install the jffnms masked package on this one system. Everyother system can install jffnms with the aforementioned line added to package.keywords. Any ideas how to track this down? Should I just copy over the ebuild manually to /usr/portage/distfiles ? Bugzilla 92501 was the original request. By the look of the CVS tree this ebuild has NEVER been in portage. How it got on your system can only be explained by you. If you think it is in portage on some of your systems you can verify by looking in the directory ls /usr/portage/net-analyzer/jffnms/ If you want to build it why don't you download the ebuild from the bugzilla site and put it in your overlay? The overlay process is well documented, I am not going to burden this list with yet another explanation. I wonder why it wass abandoned before it was ever finished? It doesn't look abandoned to me, the last post was on 19 October 2005, when a new version of the ebuild was posted. Lots of new evuilds get posted to bugzilla, not as many ever come out the other end. Once you have tested it don't forget to go back to the bug and report back on your experience. Re: [gentoo-user] grub on a SATA drive
On Thursday 24 of November 2005 17:31, maxim wexler wrote: But what do I call it? hd0 and hd1 are taken. It may well depend on your chipset configuration, number of actually connected drives and bios boot settings. On my board, there are 2 PATA and 1 SATA channels on the same controller. In linux kernel, PATA is hda and hdb, SATA is hdc, no matter what drives are actually connected. When i migrated my installation from PATA hda to SATA hdc, grub detected hda as hd0 and hdc as hd1 before, but once I removed parallel drive, SATA become hd0 in grub (but still hdc in linux), since it is first (boot) bios drive. So I needed to fix grub config to hd0 and change a root= kernel parameter to hdc, since grub insists hd0 should be hda even if there is no drive connected on PATA: root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/bzImage-2.6.10 root=/dev/hdc1 Also, I did grub setup on SATA MBS from booted grub shell, not in linux, because what it sees is what it gets then.
