Sounds like you probably got sold the early (pre iX) cup. Once the iX came
out, the cup part number was changed, the old one became obsolete, as the
new one works on the early cars just fine.

The front iX links are unique to the iX...according to the
ETK. They're also realy friggin' expensive! When I
replaced mine I went ahead and switched to the Ground
Control heim joint links. Adjustable (not really needed of
course), heim joint, and really nifty! Oh, and cheaper than
factory!!

I tried using regular E30 links but there is no way to make
them work, they are oriented incorrectly.

You're amusingly modest!

Talking of Hypothesis Testing, however, it was not
always the case. In the history of experimentation I
think it is only the last 2 (Kant's Critical
Experiment Method and Popper's Hypothetico-Deductive
Method) that follow this pattern. Aristotelian and
Baconian experimentation was different.

I'm sure some philo student will set me right. My
knowledge is second-hand from an essay in
experimentation from Sir Peter Medawar's most
excellent "Advice to Young Men and (Incidentally)
Young Women".

Subject: Steering wheel squeak is like Chinese torture
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

'95 325 Ti Club Sport

Problem - starting around Dec. my steering column has developed a squeak
which is most noticeable at parking lot speeds, turning the wheels to and
fro.

Power Steering fluid is fine. Noise is coming from column area.

I did disassemble my steering column once, but I didn't replace any parts -
just lubed everything up. BTW, the snap ring that holds the bushings and
bearing in place is a royal pain to reinstall, even with the right tool.
I still hear the squeak coming from the column, the lube didn't help While
the steering wheel was off I reinstalled the center bolt and turned the
wheels with a ratchet. When doing this I could hear the squeak, so I ruled
out the noise coming from the steering wheel itself (the airbag coil line).
My only thoughts might be the bearing/bushings at the firewall are
squeaking - and this is getting in over my head - I can see disaster coming
on that job. I did order new bushings and bearings from the dealership for
the top side and will install those soon.

Any suggestions before I go mad.

Also Can I completely disconnect the steering wheel from the column,
disconnecting the battery first of coarse?

Phil

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'm moving and already packed my Bentley manual... if the instructions
were even in there!

But I got SRS error codes 1 & 17 on my 94 325i, which should be the
Airbag Controller. The airbag light stays on and there are no error
codes for the seatbelt tensioner.

On the assumption that the problem really is the airbag controller, I
found a used, but supposedly working controller. Can anyone give me
instructions or point me to a link for instructions on replacing this. I
seem to recall seeing somewhere that they said it might have to be
replaced by the dealer and not a DIY job. I am also assuming that this
is the box under the rear seat.

Any experienced guidance is appreciated.
P.S. for anyone that saw my last post.... the ABS pump may not be
bad, just a faulty reading.

Thanks,
 Dave Kelley

Steve,

I wouldn't be surprised if you could get close to or even below invoice
(the latter is an extreme situation, and depends on the dealer and
incentives going on), unless you're talking about the M3, in which case
$1K to $2K (in extreme cases) off MSRP should be expected.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Greetings all,

I'm ready to order the new suspension for my 95 325i
(187k original sport suspension) and have a few
questions. I would like to stay as close to the
firmness of the sport package yet eliminate more body
roll. What set up do you all think would best suit my
needs? I don't autocross or do any driver schools
just some spirited driving once in a while. This is
my daily driver and I live in Los Angeles. Some
streets here are decent but you can knock out a
filling or two if you're not careful. I also have 17"
wheels.

I was thinking of the typical Bilstien/HR setup with
M3 control arms but heard that the Bilstien/Eibach or
the Koni/Eibach would not be as harsh as the first.
Any truth to this?? I'd like to see the spring and
dampening rates but can't seem to find them anywhere.
Any help on this little dilema of mine would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Subject: Engine rebuild...was water pump mounting bolts
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

So after some consideration I decided this weekend I am just going to take the engine
apart and pull the timing chain cover off and drill the broken bolt on a drill press.
I figure I might as well do it right from the begining. I did seal it up with only 3
bolts and silcon gasket maker just to get it running. I pushed the engine moderatly
hard the next day and there was no leaking. So if anyone is in this situation later
on know that 3 bolts will mostly like be enough. I think the fact that the pump has
an o-ring instead of a gasket makes the bolts not as vital.
Regardless, I want it to be correct. I couldn't live with myself if I knew there were
only 3 bolts in there. So since I am going to be opening everything up are there any
other items I should consider replacing? The car has 110,000 on it so if anyone has
suggestions on what to fix please let me know.

I'd recommend Konis and H&R OE sports. springs run about 10% stiffer than M3 (I have
M3 and my 325
in the garage) They have been OK on urban streets in DC as well as track time. Konis
will run a
little softer than Bilsteins. I set mine at 3 of 5 all the way around. You can think
about sways,
but the fresh springs and shocks will flatten things considerably.

Finally, you don't have to cut and gut fronts for a Koni install for a 325 like you do
for an E36M3.
I'm not looking forward to the day I finally break down and put Koni's in the M to
match my 325's
suspension. Should bought Josh's struts when I had the chance...oh, well.
