Looking to upgrade suspension on my E34, to a slightly
lower ride height and commensurate firmness. Not too
low or harsh, this is my daily driver. I've been
thinking of a Sachs Sporting Kit but Bekkers doesn't
list it on their website. Trying to avoid the prices
on the Dinan stuff. Any recent advice or experience?
Thanks,

I am in the same predicament right now also.

I need a reasonable comfy ride, as my 6mo son and wife will ride with me
also. I am in Springfield, MA and the roads are not known for their
smoothness out here. Upon research, I was reccomended Bilstein touring
sport shocks and Bavauto springs.

The springs go for $199.95 and the struts are 299.95. $500 suspension
package isn't too bad...

Try stopping by www.bimmer.info and visit the E34 section - you'll get lots
of opinions there.

I personally run the Dinan/Bilstein spring/shock setup. I like it. Dinan
reportedly tunes the Bilsteins a bit to match the springs. Drop on the car
is minimal keeping a semi stock look and reasonable ride height. The
Bavauto springs will really drop the car. And I haven't really liked the
ride of the one's that I've riden in. Heard good things about the Sachs kit
but have yet to ride in one. Cheaper than the Dinan stuff, more drop as
well..

My current (and final) setup is:

Dinan springs/matched Bilstein shocks
RD swaybars
Ireland Engineering camber plates (nice - good bang for the buck, improves
turn-in on the somewhat boaty E34)
+1 tire setup

I'm very happy - seems to be a nice balance. Car's taunt without bucking or
hitting the snubbers.

Can't speak directly for E34s, but for E36s the Koni's are a bit more compliant than
the bilsteins.
H&R OE Sport springs lower an E36 about 1/2" anbd give you spring rates a little
firmer than the M
version of the car. I'd explore E34 applications

Then again, what are you looking for. A lowered look or tighter handling? Depending
on the mileage
of your car, it may just need fresh shocks.

I had the Bilstein Sport/Bav Auto set up for my E34 540i, with the 17" E38 7 spoke
wheels. The ride height reduction was about a 1/4" more than I would have liked. Use
was hard-core (central loop Chicago) city driving. This was a huge upgrade over the
Buick-like original setup, but still pretty comfortable on rough surfaces. HOWEVER,
make sure you get the internal bump stops on the Bilsteins trimmed. Travel was
miserably short with the stock bump stops, so it didn't take much to go from "taut" to
"jarring". --SC

SOunds like a good setup. I am planning on getting those springs and
struts. Did you upgrade from those? When you say you had, dose that mean
you have something else now? Any reason for replacing that set?

I am running 18" M parallels and want to keep as comfortable a ride as
possible.

Thanks!

one of my non-bmw buddies was asking me if I had a scan tool for obd-2 (his
check engine light comes on sometimes but then goes away) and I started
thinking it might be a neat toy to have..

doing some research I came across this nifty device

http://www.auterraweb.com

plugs into a palm pilot, and covers all obd2 protocols including ISO (for
bmws I think).. it also does dyno stuff HP and Torque curves (using
speed/rpm & vehicle weight, temp, press etc) which seems like a cool toy for
doing mod comparisons..

anybody have one? comments?

My front end rebuild is complete. What a world of difference all new front
end parts makes. I have to go snug up the driver side strut top bolt (over a
big enough bump I can hear it go clunk) as I was a bit too conservative on
them, but other than that it is crisp, firm, and silent. Nice

Of course, now the back feels all mushy so I now need to go put the new
shocks in there.

Now that everything is feel so much better in terms of the way the car
drives and feels, I am now noticing other little things, like the brake
pedal feel.

My brakes work fine, they just seem, mushy. There is a fair bit of pedal
travel before they firm up, but once they do, they are fully capable of
locking up the tires, the pedal doesn't sink if you hold it, and I can't
push hard enough to make it hit the floor... but if you release it and hit
them a second time, they firm up much faster and feel much better.

So any ideas as to where to start? Would flushing the brake fluid help? I
have no idea how old the fluid is. Given the previous history of the car, it
may never have been changed.

I'm dealing with this on my E30 M3. I've basically come to the conclusion
that, while very powerful, E30 brakes just don't provide very good initial
feel. I even upgraded to the mythical 25mm M/C (don't bother, it's not
worth the effort, except it's cheaper than the stock unit). Still, the
pedal acts excatly like yours.

You can try adjusting the pedal freeplay (nut on the back of the pedal), but
that also results in no change of feel.

Like you said, the brakes are very good at stopping. Mine will lock up the
wheels with good track tires on board at any speed. They are powerful
enough to outbrake just about anything on the track, but they just don't
have the confidence-inspiring feel that some other cars do.

I've tried about 100 things, basically, that's BMW brakes & how they work.
I don't know why I would expect better, I've had folks with other makes of
cars drive it & they wonder what the hell I'm talking about.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

On my E36 I always bled the clutch when I replace the brake fluid. I had
my M3/SMG in for its 1200 mile service; while the transmission cover was
off the techs and I looked for the bleed screw--none found. The tech
said he wasn't sure but thought maybe this transmission is
self-bleeding. Anyone know?

Has anyone bled a SMG clutch? Madrussian's site has a great picture of
the 6MT bleed valve--it's not in the same place on the SMG!

Already got an answer from another board--

<The SMG uses it's own hydraulic system. It is seperate from the brake
system... unlike the manual car. The SMG uses a comand to bleed the
system... this can only be done by the dealer or a shop that has the
resources (Group One Tester) to tell the SMG unit to perform the
bleeding process... BTW it takes about an hour for it to run through.>

I wonder if it is a service item or the dreaded "lifetime fill!"
