The sunroof drains through tubes in each corner. The only way that water
could get in is if the tubes are plugged, or there is a crack in the
cassette that carries the sunroof. The material that the cassette is made
from is pretty brittle, but it is put in with a lot of screws which would
not let it flex much.

I suspect that the drain tubes are clogged. I have had mine completely
apart, so if you have any more questions, contact me direct.

The CPI guide (cars of particular interest) goes back to the birth of
Christ. I know Porsche values extremely well. Email me and I will tell you
what you should pay. Also, I think you are a rennlister, so you can ask
there to verify what I tell you. As an aside, a 1978 Porsche (SC model)
assuming it is a coupe with a sunroof and about 90 to 130k miles, is worth
about $7,000 to $11,000, IMO (less than $7,000 with 150k plus miles and in
rough shape). Porsche values are completely dependent on mileage,
books/records <--very important considering the engine costs tons to work on
and an engine rebuild is $5,000, and paintwork/bodywork. The 1978 was the
first year for the SC, however, there were no really bad 'first year'
problems for the Porsche 911SC. You just need to make sure the timing chain
has updated pressure fed tensioners (offered in 1984 and above and available
for retrofitting on all SC models). The 3.0 liter SC engine is one of the
most reliable Porsche ever made. The only real problem these engines ever
had (aside from the chain tensioner problem) was they are sometimes prone to
breaking head studs. This is not necessarily common, but it is extremely
expensive to repair (pretty much a rebuild when that happens). A
pre-purchase-inspection is recommended (if not mandatory) on a 911, since
the engine is usually half the price of the car (not true with mid 80's and
up 911's). The older Porsche you buy (with the price dropping each year) the
more you approach the engine being the entire value of the car, as, IMO, is
true with 74 to 77 911's with the troublesome 2.7 engine.

where can one find info on Precision? A search doesn't bring anything up.

keeee-rikey! That was stunning! I was an eyewitness to the X5 incident
at the GGC autox, and it didn't compare to that. He went about 45
degrees up briefly, only on one side. Also, there was no big ravine
nearby. :)

My hat is off to that driver (in the video). You can see him quite
deliberately act by steering into the roll, bringing the vehicle back down.
He obviously also stays in the throttle, which, good or bad, causes the second
"incident".

His reactions were spot on once the incident had begun, one wonders if it
could have been avoided, but he's still a better instinctive driver than I
could hope to be.

That is one awesome piece of footage that I'll be saving for our waiting room
entertainment.

looks like a Paris-Dakar car, but the markings don't
match what I recall it looking like for this year's event.

perhaps from another rally-raid event.

we'll need someone who speaks French (?) to
translate the commentary I guess...

I believe that's the X-raid team's X5 and the footage is indeed from
the Paris-Dakar rally.

I think they won't their class this year, didn't they? That was also
the debut of the 3.0 twin-turbo diesel engine, but that wasn't
revealed at the time.

The drivers side midrange speaker on my 328i is making a horrible noise
instead of music. Anyone have one from the Harmon Kardon system for sale
or a suggestion of where to find one for a reasonable price? I assume
the speakers can be detached from their grills, but I have the tan
interior in case not.

I have a few comments to add although Rich, Ed, Alex and John have
covered the majority of items in depth....

It is a good idea to do a full inspection of this connector on both
sides, as Rich says the wiring can corrode under the boot and cause
trouble. I always add some anti-oxidation compound before reassembly as
cheap insurance. A rough idle is common on all M20's I have
owned/driven. How many miles are on the car? In one instance I had a
fuel injector with an intermittent internal connection and until I
tracked it down was causing all kinds of funny stuff to happen.

This has been covered

Everyone has covered this well, although there is a debate in the E30 M3
community as to when the exact changeover to offset bushings and
aluminum arms occurred. I do know that my 3/89 build M3 has steel arms
and offset bushings.

There are special tools for this but I have always used a BFH. If you
want the tool go to www.zdmak.com .

The Bosch blue coil is/was the hot set-up for early BMW 's with
non-electronic ignitions. I am not sure if it is compatible with the
Motronic or if it would even make a difference. My experience is the
stock ignition system on the E30 is very good and very reliable.

> 6. Are DME's of the same year but different models ("i" vs "is")

AFAIK there were only two DME's used for the US version of the M20
motor, ...153 and ...173, both have the same three row connector and are
interchangeable. I have done this once to rule out a bad DME and the
car ran fine.

On early Euro 325i's there is a problem with bad solder joints in the
DME causing ignition problems but I have not heard of this with the US
cars.

Have you joined the E30 Yahoo Group? Lots of really good information
and resources over on that list too.
