It has been a while since I posted anything to the list but I have a bit of a problem.
I got in my car the other day after it rained for hours and water came gushing in
from everywhere. We are talking like a gallon or so. It was puddled in the dome
lights and came like a waterfall from where the windshield meets the headliner. I
dumped water into those little drains for a good amount of time and it seemed to drain
just fine. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

Better than what? The specified 5W-30 will give
better economy than 0W-40. That new 5W-20 Ford oil
would be even better. Personally I don't think
risking an engine is a good tradeoff for a small
mileage gain. It would be good for a tight clearance
qualifying engine, though :-).

Apply Gary Derian's Lake Test to body parts with rust at the seams.

I am not int the "know" about Gary's lake test?

I don't intend on finding out how well the 5er floats.

Remove questionable body panels. Throw them in a lake.
Those that float may be reused. (Originally intended for
stretch-to-yield fasteners and eastern European vehicles.)

In this case, I would thoroughly investigate the
extent of rust before installing replacement doors.
Not only replacement a lot of work and expense, the
DOT stickers will no longer match.

The rust doesn't stop. You can slow its progress, but it never rests.

All front E34 doors 1991 on later are the same.

Not to make such a morbid anology...but this is the perfect one- rust is
every bit like cancer. If you leave even the slightest bit behind, it will
continue to attack and spread. I see you live here in Indy (midwest). Most
of the E34's around here I have seen have the rust or slight areas where it
is starting. You would have to get your doors from out west or such. I
wouldn't spend money getting used doors from around here, or you'll be back
where you started soon enough. Unless it is horrible, you are better off
getting them sand blasted, then have the shop put some all metal filler in,
then paint...with the realization that you will be back doing it again a few
years later. Karl, you may want to try IDS here in Indianapolis to blast the
rust away. They are very good.

Tom ,
Before you switch to studs-and-nuts for cyl head retention allow me to
repeat one sad experience of mine .....
Old Ferrari V12 engines used studs/nuts . The studs were a reasonably
tight fit to the holes in the head and were prone to massive corrosion
problems.
I had a 330 that I tried to remove the heads on in mid 1970's .no luck
even after I made a huge 'pulling fixture' from 1 1/2" thick plate .
Complete motor ended up at Seattle Ferrari dealer for 3 months -and
cost me $1200 JUST to get those heads off (remember ..mid 1970s THAT was
serious $$ then ).
BMW/alternate studs may be different, but it's worth remembering while
contemplating a change. If there's clearance to put a thin chemically
neutral spacer-collar around each stud (teflon-shrink tube ??) it'd be
good insurance for future separations .
