Hello all! I am very happy to say that the flight simulator podcast is ready! I am going to either make the podcast in to one large MP3 or stick the individual parts up on sendspace. Re: [Audyssey] creating accessible games
Hi marvin. A good call. C++ would probably be the stablest if you know it well, but it wil take the most time to get something done. Python or c sharp may be a better call. I am not a big fan of basic type languages, but many games were created using the defunct visual basic. Ive seen you on the java list. Java could be risky for big projects, but it can be as flexable as python. It also depends how big the game is you want to make. -original message- Subject: Re: [Audyssey] creating accessible games From: "Davy Kager" Date: 17/06/2009 7:18 pm Hi, What language are you most familiar with? Re: [Audyssey] creating accessible games
Hi Marvin and all, Yes, there is an accessible game developers list and it is found at http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/lists.php. You can subscribe to it by sending a blank e-mail to developers-subscr...@usagamesinteractive.com and reply to the subscription verification e-mail. As far as getting started goes you will want to learn a programming language such as C++, C-Sharp, Python, whatever. I don't recommend using Visual Basic 6 primarily because it is out of date, is no longer supported by Microsoft, and requires a bunch of older runtime libraries to be installed manually on newer Windows versions. Although, if you have your heart set on Visual Basic I recommend Visual Basic 2005 or higher. After you are comfortable with a programming language you will need to learn how to program your games using a software developer kit such as DirectX, LibSDL, PyGame, etc. Software Developer Kits such as DirectX or LibSDL are used to program input, audio, and graphics support for games and is very important to know. However, this is just the beginning. I want to mention here often there is much more to creating games than just knowing a programming language and a good SDK like DirectX. There are specialized techniques or methods for doing things such as programming AI. An AI can be as simple as an if, then, else type simple logic to something more complex and interesting like fuzzy logic. This is a specialized field of programming you might want to research at length in order to design a better artificial intelligence for your game characters. Another field of study that is helpful in programming games is math and physics. Obviously, for card games like Solitaire, Black Jack, and Poker you don't need to be a math or physics major to create good games. However, if you want to create something like Microsoft Flight Simulator you are going to be dealing with some fairly in depth math and physics. I'm just using this as a comparison on how math and physics can become extremely important depending on the genre or type of game you intend to create. Therefore the better you are in these two fields the better and more realistic games you can create. Finally, there is the game's story to consider here. Most of us want to write games, and even if we have the programming skill to create them we might not be so good at coming up with a good story. The game's story, in my opinion, is just as important as the programming required to create it. For example, in recent years there have been several top selling mainstream games like Doom, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, etc that began as video games and later became movies. I'm not suggesting anyone here has to come up with a story quite that good, but only that putting some thought and effort into a good story line will make the game more apealing to others. If you want to sell games an apealing story line might interest others in buying and playing your game. While using an existing story line such as Harry Potter, Star wars, Star Trek, and so on is highly popular and apealing that is also potentially a serious problem. Copyright laws are fairly strict on that matter and how much copyrighted content you can get away with using largely depends on if the copyright holder finds out about the infringement, and weather or not they are willing to enforce it legally if they do. I'm guessing many won't, but you never know. HTH --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Monster Breeders
Here's a game I stumbled across a couple days ago. This one won't be for everyone. Its vaguely pokemonesque, for those of you who have played the pokemon RPG's. You play the role of a monster breeder, and you purchase and hatch monsters to fight for you in the field, in the training center or against gods, the essential bosses of the game. There's a storyline to go with it all, travelling from town to town. There's 3 different types of quests, the classic collection quests that about 99.9% of games consider quests, but this game makes things unique with two different types of quests. Roleplaying quests, which plays similar to a choose your own adventure book and you have to make the right choices for maximum reward, and also story quests, which advance the storyline. There's also an overarching quest similar to the zelda games. Its called the delivery quest. basically what you do is get an item that someone wants, and they'll give you another item for that item. You keep trading the items up the line as you go from town to town, till you get to the end of the quest and get an awesome item. I haven't completed it yet but I'm guessing the reward will be sweet. The game has an exploration element which could be interesting or irritating depending on how you look at it. The maps are ridiculously huge, so it takes a while to get across them, but there's alternate modes of transportation such as trains, airships, etc that you can pay for to make things quicker if you wish. Train rides are free from 5 to 10 PM AST on sundays , which I think is about 3 to 9 eastern time, but I could be wrong. Either way, I recommend taking advantage of that at your earliest convenience. The combat system is kind of neat. You have a regular attack, and your monsters also have special attacks that do different things you can choose from. The enemies also have special abilities. The combat at this point doesn't take a lot of strategy, but from posts I've seen by the developer he's planning on making it more convensional, where all your monsters will be fighting at once instead of switching out like they do now. The game is pretty accessible for a game that wasn't planned with accessibility in mind, I've already talked to the developer and he fixed the glaring issues that he could and seems pretty open to accessibility suggestions. The only problem is that the map can't be made accessible. There's only one place you need it, and the developer gave me the coordinates for the area you need to get to, so if anyone signs up and needs that information feel free to email me. As for the rest of it, walking to towns and such, the map isn't needed. There's a coordinate system in place, and a gps where you can select your town and it'll tell you how far in any given direction you need to go to get to that town, city, etc. Here's the link. It’s a referal link, but all using it does is helps me get breeder levels, so if you're feeling generous, fine, if not, that's cool too. http://monbre.com?ref=Vincent Kane --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Anyway, enjoy. -- From: "dark" Sent: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 11:29 AM To: "Gamers Discussion list" Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Looking for a turn-based game Hi. It hapens either the page load error or it gives me a site that has nothing to do with the actual game. Why is this happening? What is the problem with the site? Thanks and best regards! Hi Luká, Yes, I'm sorry, but it would be more difficult than you would think. For one, I do not have access to road maps of the United States like the original sighted programmer of the trucker game did. And as I said I was not the original programmer and thus did not write the code so that it could be modified. The same thing with the golf game that I was not the original programmer of. Over the years as many people have asked me to make the golf game a multi player game as have asked me to modify the trucker game, but it just can not be done. People such as David Greenwood have looked at the golf game code and said that it is just not possible without writing the whole thing from scratch. When programming a game or whatever, one wants to have an idea of what the program is going to be asked to do right from the start, because the code often can not be modified to do things not in the original plan. Often one would just want or need to start over from scratch. And truthfully I have no plans to write a trucker game from scratch. You know for one reason, I do not have road maps. And another reason is that I am working on Mach 1 tts. And have a couple of other games in mind which will take up at least the next year or so. Re: [Audyssey] Trucker3
Hi Shaun, I'm sorry, but as I have said I will not be modifying trucker. Not even to up date it. Just keeping the gas prices current would be a full time job as they are constantly changing. And if you change the gas price, you then need to change all costs and profits. I have never even analyzed the original source code enough to do that, just enough to add the sounds to the game. BTW If anyone would like the original dos source code to modify, I would be happy to send it to them. Re: [Audyssey] Trucker3
Hi Wil, I'm sorry, but as I said, I did not write the original trucker game and thus will not be modifying the code. I only analyzed the code enough to be able to add the sounds without screwing up the game or it's play. People were playing trucker in a version called Big Rig for a long time and I just thought that it would be more fun with sounds added. BFN - Original Message - That's a shame. You could add obstacles in it where the truck you're driving gets hijacked. The driver needs to fend off the potential hijacker to continue his mission. Nice idea, anyway! Re: [Audyssey] Trucker3
Hi Peter, If you wish to drive a vehicle, may I suggest Mach 1 tts. It is the closest thing to actually driving that I have found since I had to give up my drivers license. Even much more fun than when my friend let me drive his pickup truck around in a field. You know because there was no visual or any other feedback like the audio feedback that you get in Mach 1 tts. BTW I have added fuel consumption to Mach 1 tts. Even just figured out a math solution to the lesser gas mileage at higher engine RPM. Still need to add the whole pit stop routine since your car will now run out of gas.
