Re: [JAWS-Users] Trying To Get Detail ViewOr List View In Folders
Hi Ted, if the shortcuts don't work, another way, is with the focus in the items view: 1. No items should be selected. If an item is selected, you can deselect it by pressing ctrl+spacebar. 2. Open the context menu. 3. Open the view sub menu, and choose the view you want. Concerning making all the other folders have the same view. Since Windows Vista, you can have more control over applying views to other folders. Rather than simply applying to all folders, you can apply to all folders which are optimized for the same kind of files. Folders can be optimized for documents, music, pictures, videos, and general items. For a folder, the setting of its optimization for the kind of files it contains is found on the Customize page of the folder's properties dialog. Note also that the view settings of some top levels folders, like your personal folder, and This PC have independent settings. To apply the view of the current folders to all the other folders which are optimized for the same kind of files: 1. To open the Folder Options dialog: open the File menu (Alt + F), and choose Options. 2. Move to the View page. 3. Press the Apply to Folders button. A Folder views dialog opens asking you whether you want all folders of this type to match this folder's view settings. Press Enter to press the Yes button. 4. Tab to the OK button and press it. If you need more information on this topic, then in the following guide, in customizing file explorer section, there is a sub section on the view options of the items view: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/File-Explorer-10-Guide.html and this is a link to that section of the guide: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/File-Explorer-10-Guide.html#view-options-of-the-items-view David. original message: [JAWS-Users] Trying To Get Detail ViewOr List View In Folders Dear List: I have windows ten, Jaws 2018 and Microsoft Office 2016 and have started to use Jaws. Hi Ted, concerning your first question. One way of setting the folder view to either list or details is to use the following shortcuts. Re: [JAWS-Users] unhide wlm toolbar
wlm is no longer supported by microsoft, and so you can't download wlm from the microsoft website any more. You probably can from other places, but you would have to be careful where you downloaded it from. However, you might be able to repair it. I'm not sure how accessible this will be for your version of windows essentials, you might need sighted help to be able to do it. I've got Windows essentials (which includes windows live mail) 2012 installed. If I got to programs and features, select windows essentials 2012, open its context menu and choose uninstall/change, then a dialog opens which contains a button for repairing windows essentials. Incidentally, the entry for windows essentials in programs in features will tell you which version you are using. Hi Kimsan, The guide which was mentioned for 2.1.3 has been updated for 2.2.0 and is available here: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-2.2.0-Guide.html There are in fact a number of differences, in addition to the menu structure, and these are mentioned in the introduction to the guide. I would recommend the Audacity4Blind mailing list, and there are instructions on how to join in the help section of the introduction section in the guide. Finally, this is a short audio introduction to Audacity made by Andrew Downie. Re: [JAWS-Users] The backspace key, your best friend
Hi Jim, just a minor point about the use of backspace in File explorer. If the focus is in the items view, then backspace normally has the same effect as alt+left arrow, it takes you back a folder. However, if there is not a folder to go back to, then it takes you up a level. So backspace will often take you up a level, but not always. Compare this with the keystrokes alt + up arrow, which always takes you up a level, and alt + left arrow, which always takes you back a folder. For example, if you've got File Explorer configured to open at Quick access: 1. Press windows key + e, to open file explorer at quick access. 2. Select and open the downloads folder (assuming it's one of the folders in your quick access folder). 3 . Press backspace. You're taken back to Quick access, not up to the This pc folder. best wishes, David. original message: Hi Jaws users list, here is the next short lesson in my series, various keys, your best friend. These short lessons also include step by step instructions on how to use them, and how to get the most out of them, by hearing my various examples of how to use them. *Text documents. Pressing the backspace key in any text document, will remove the letter to the left of the cursor. Pressing the keyboard combination control+backspace key will delete the whole word to the left of the cursor. *File explorer. Using the backspace key in any open File explorer window, will take you up one level from your current position. For example, if I press enter on my name James, on my desktop, this desktop shortcut opens my James user's folder. I hear not-selected, Book share books, 1 of 14. These are my 14 individual, user folders. Pressing the down arrow key, will highlight and select any folder that comes into focus. Or if I use first letter navigation, and press the letter d, until I hear documents, and press enter. I will hear, not selected, BARD 1 of 27. I am now sitting in my document's folder. I can press enter to open any document, Or press the backspace key to go back up one level to my list of 14 user's folders. Ok, now press the backspace key, I am now back up one level in my file explorer window to my James folder with my 14 users folders, I am still sitting on the document folder. If I press the home key, my first folder is selected and I am placed on, my bookshare books folder. Now if I press enter on my bookshare books folder. I will hear, not selected, animals, 1 of 16. This is because I have made 16, main folders of categories for all my bookshare book folders. For example, if I press the letter b, and press enter on, bible various books. I will hear, not selected, a study of angels, 1 of 156. If I press the letters, d, a together quickly, and press enter on David Jeremiah. I will here, not selected, 31 days to happiness, 1 of 37. Now from right here, if I press the backspace key, I will go back up one level, to the bible various books window, with David Jeremiah highlighted. Now if I press j,o,h very quickly and down arrow and press enter on, John F. Macarthur. I will hear, not selected, 1 and 2 peter, courage in times of trouble, 1 of 46. Now from hear, if I press the backspace key, I will go up one level in file explorer, to the bible various books window, with the John F. Macarthur, folder highlighted. If I press the backspace key again, I will go up one level to the bookshare book window, with bible various books highlighted. If I press the backspace key again, from this bookshare books file explorer window. I will hear, James, not selected, bookshare books, 1 of 14. This works in all file explorer windows on your computer. As you go forward and down to each level in the file explorer windows by pressing enter on the selected folders, you come back up one level at a time in the file explorer window, by pressing the backspace key. *On the internet. When you are on most internet websites, if you have pressed enter on a link and want to go back to the previous page, press the backspace key or ALT+left arrow key. *Settings area in W-10. If you are in any of the sub-categories of the settings area, pressing the backspace key will take you back to the search edit box, of the main window of the settings area, just tab one time to the list of the 9 main categories. *Edit box. Pressing the backspace key, will delete one letter at a time, from any search edit boxes that, you are in. Holding down the backspace key in the search edit boxes, will delete all characters quickly, the longer you keep the backspace key pressed down, and the more characters are deleted. *Tip, sometimes in certain situations, you must keep the delete key, held down to clear an edit box, instead of the ba

Re: [JAWS-Users] Editing a category in WLM Contacts
Hi Jean, in the following guide to WLM, there's a main section on Contacts, in this section there are sub sections on creating, editing, and using categories: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Windows-Live-Mail-2011-Guide.html This is the relevant excerpt from the guide: Categories A category is a group of contacts, and any categories which you create appear in the Folder tree. The top level item is Contacts, and this contains the category All Contacts, together with any categories which you create. After each category name there's the number of contacts in that category, which Jaws incorrectly reads as the number of unread messages. When a category is selected in the Folder tree, then the contacts in that category are shown in the Contact list. If either the top level item Contacts, or the All Contacts category is selected, then all your contacts are shown in the Contact list. Creating a new category 1. On the Home tab, in the New group, press the Category button (*Ctrl + Shift + G*). 2. The Create a new category dialog opens, and the first control is an edit box for the name of the category. Type in a name, and then press *Enter*to press the default Save button. Note that you can add contacts to a category and remove them in the dialog for creating a new category. There's a list of contacts for doing this, but unfortunately Jaws doesn't read whether or not a contact is selected. So it's probably easier to do this using the methods described in the next two sections. Adding contacts to a category 1. In the folder tree, select either the Contacts item or a category other than the one to which you want to add contacts. 2. Select one or more contacts in the contact list, then on the context menu, open the Copy Contact To sub menu, and choose a category. 3. Note that for some strange reason the Folder tree automatically becomes the focus, so if you want to add more contacts, you have to *Tab* back to the Contact list. Removing contacts from a category 1. In the folder tree, select the category. 2. In the contact list, select one or more contacts, open the context menu, and choose Remove Contact from Category. 3. Again, for some strange reason, the Folder tree automatically becomes the focus, so if you want to remove more contacts, you have to *Tab* back to the Contact list. Sending messages using categories In a new message window, you can type in the names categories, just as you would the names of contacts. When the message is sent, the name of a category is replaced by all the addresses of the contacts in that category. Note that in the context menu of a category in the Folder tree there's a Send Email command, but it's always unavailable — a Windows Live Mail bug. David. original message: In WLM, I want to create a distribution list. I know how to define a category, and I know how to right click on a contact and add to that list. E.g., see what’s in a category, delete single addresses from that category, etc. Also, I read on Google that when you put a category in the To or CC or BCC field, you have to click a plus sign to populate the addresses. Re: [JAWS-Users] How can I get Word Docs into folders
Hi Al, others have suggested that after opening the save as dialog, you can type the complete path of the file into the filename edit box, for example c:\user\david\documents\bank\letter, were bank is a folder in your documents folder, and letter is the name for the new file. This works just fine, but there are other ways that involve less typing, and I'll describe one. You have to set some stuff up first, but it then makes saving reasonably straightforward, and you only have to type the file name. A couple of things to do first in Windows explorer. The first is to add the folder bank (or whatever) to your favourite locations in Windows explorer. 1. Open windows explorer 2. Go to the bank folder. The list view should now show the contents of that folder. 3. Press shift+tab to move to the tree view. 4. Press home to move to the first item which is favorites. 5. Open its context menu, and choose add current location to favorites. 6. If you arrow down from favorites, you should now see that bank is one of your favourite locations. The second thing to do in Windows explorer is to make sure that the tree view opens to the current folder. 1. Open the tools menu, and choose options. 2. On the general page, tab to the check box "show all folders" 3. Press down arrow to move to the check box "Automatically expand to current folder". If that checkbox isn't checked, check it. 4. Press enter to press the default Ok button. With this now set up, here's how you could save a document to the bank folder: 1. After you've written a new document, press ctrl+S to save. The save as dialog opens. 2. The file name edit box is the initial focus. type in the name of the file. 3. Press shift+tab three times to move to the tree view. The folder that is selected is the current folder where the file is going to be saved. 4. If the current folder is the bank folder, you can just press alt+s to press the save button, or tab to the save button and press it. 5. If the current folder isn't the bank folder. press home to move to favorites at the top of the tree, and press the first letter of the folder (in this example b) until you select it. Press enter to change the current location to the bank folder, and press alt+s to press the save button. David. original message: Hi Adrian, Thank you very much, your instructions worked great!!! For more info about the taskbar buttons on Windows 10, see the taskbar buttons section of this guide: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Taskbar-10-Guide.html David. original message: Hi guys, when I'm downloading from a website, I usually close the internet page after I have chosen view and track your downloads. I only do this when I no longer want to surf the net and I'm just waiting for my download to finish. Regardless of my reasons, isn't it strange that I can't open internet explorer if the view and track your download page is running? In windows 7 I did not have this problem, I could have 10 tabs open including the above mentioned window and they were all individual and the shortcut on the desk top remained internet explorer and I could access it at any time. Having said that with windows 10 I don't have a shortcut on the desk top, it's located in the task bar. If I have a page open such as google.com I can bring that page up from the task bar and hit the shortcut to open a new tab, but as I said above that isn't possible with the view and track your download page. I minimize the window that shows the download and it's progress. I brouse through email and I decide to go back to the internet to search for something. Here's the problem. I go to the task bar and now internet explorer isn't there, it's replaced by the window that's downloading, how can I open a new tab in internet explorer? I tried to access some sort of file tab to find an option to open a new tab but no such luck. Any ideas? I hope I've explained my situation properly, and I hope I haven't confused you guys too much. Re: [JAWS-Users] Character under cursor repeatedly announced in command prompt windows - Windows 10/JAWS 17
Hi Jason, there are no problems with having both Jaws and NVDA installed at the same time, David. original message: Thank you. I've been considering this option. How well do JAWS and NVDA co-exist on a Windows 10 machine - that is, are there any problems resulting from having both installed at once? Obviously, only one of them can be running at a time. I'll need NVDA for work in order to test Web-based technologies anyway. Under Windows 7, it didn't seem to cause any instability when installed alongside JAWS. Hi Jason, you could use NVDA for command prompt windows, until Jaws is fixed, David. original message: A quick update: this issue can be easily reproduced, so I've sent a report to Freedom Scientific Technical Support. Re: [JAWS-Users] Introductory Windows 10 questions
Hi Jason, there's a description of the start menu, and other stuff related to the taskbar, in the following guide: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Taskbar-10-Guide.html Concerning alt+tab only cycling the two mostly recently opened windows, I don't have that problem on my computer, but have seen it reported. David. original message: Hello JAWS users, I installed JAWS on a Windows 10 machine today at work. The process was mostly accessible. I invoked Microsoft Narrator, which I hadn't used before, and managed to use it to run Internet Explorer, download the latest JAWS 17 release, and start the installation. I switched off Narrator as soon as I started the JAWS installation, so I didn't discover without help that, while installing, the system had switched to the lock screen. Also, after the reboot required as part of the installation process, I was again at the lock screen and needed to supply credentials. It's possible that Narrator would have worked at the lock screen after the reboot, but I didn't test it in that situation. There was no beep or other auditory cue to indicate that the system had rebooted successfully. Now to the inevitable questions. Where would I find the best description currently on offer of the Windows 10 desktop and start menu? I also noticed that Alt-Tab only cycled through the two most recently opened windows. Have others experienced this result, and if so, is there a solution or alternative if you want to switch between any of your open windows/applications? I installed Firefox and configured it as the default browser. Since Microsoft Office is installed, I set Outlook as the default e-mail application. I expect to have more issues and questions as I try to turn this system into an effective work environment. However, I'll try to repay any advice by helping others on this and other lists as I try to do whenever I have knowledge or insight to share. [JAWS-Users] Windows 10: Edge is now used for web search results from taskbar search box.
In windows 10, if you open the start menu, type some search terms, and open a web search result, then until a few days ago, it used to open the search in your default browser. The same applied if you were using Cortana, and it didn't know the answer to your request. However, Microsoft have changed this so these now open in the Edge browser, irrespective of which browser you have set as your default browser. Unfortunately, Edge is not accessible using Jaws or Window Eyes, though it is at least partially accessible using NVDA or narrator. This seems like a very surprising decision by microsoft, to make this change before Edge is accessible by users of all the major screen readers. This is a link to the announcement by microsoft: https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/04/28/delivering-personalized-search-experiences-in-windows-10-through-cortana/ David. Re: [JAWS-Users] The latest Jaws 17 and the Latest w-10 update
Hi Jim, thanks for the warning and for informing freedom scientific. Hopefully they'll fix this really quickly. I checked the settings app on my computer using the latest version of jaws and found the following: 1. Most of the toggle switches read correctly, but some didn't, including the one you gave as an example. 2. When the toggle switch was read incorrectly: if the toggle switch was in fact off, it was read as on; if the toggle switch was in fact on, then it's state was not read. 3. The toggle switches which were read incorrectly, are as follows: a. In system, notifications & actions, all the toggle switches in the show notifications from these apps section. b. In Privacy. In any of the categories on that page where there are a series of toggle switches for specific apps, for example, choose apps that can use your location. c. In Update & security, backup. The Automatically backup my files toggle switch. The misreading of this switch is very unfortunate. David. original message: Good afternoon Jaws Users group. Urgent warning! The following is a copy of the email I sent to F S support. If any of you still have Jaws 16 and the Latest Jaws 17 installed on your w-10 computer, with the latest w-10 update of yesterday or today, depending when your computer updated to it. Please call or email Freedom Scientific if you can verify what I have proven on three different computers running the latest Jaws 17 update and running the latest w-10 update. Email: supp...@freedomscientific.com Here is my message to them explaining the problem: Dear Freedom Scientific. This email concerns the latest version of Jaws, 17.0.1377, and the latest update to w-10 of yesterday, January 27, 2016. When in the settings area of w-10, Jaws 17 reads the status of all the buttons incorrectly, weather they are on/off. For example, Windows key+I, for settings. Press enter on Privacy. Down arrow to, Background Apps, press enter. Tab two times to, Alarms and clock. Jaws 16, says, just button, which means it’s off. Jaws 17, says, Toggle switch on. This is only one example, Jaws reads all the buttons in the setting area of w-10 wrong, it gives the opposite of what the buttons are actually set to. Yes, I have proven this myself with sited verification, on three different computers running the Latest Jaws 17 and running the latest w-10 update of yesterday. I called your technical support line and showed them. They did not believe me at first. I had to do a Jaws tandem to show them what was going on. I also had a partially sited Jaws user of w-10 on the three way phone call with them for verification. Even running Jaws 17 in default mode, I was able to reproduce this problem for them. I was able to switch back to Jaws 16 and show them that Jaws 16 just said button, which means the button is off. I would then turn Jaws 17 on, and it said, Toggle switch on. So this is a very important issue, a lot of Jaws users just use Jaws 17 on their w-10 computers. After yesterday’s update to w-10, Jaws 17 will read the opposite information to them while in the settings area of w-10 concerning the status of the buttons, weather they are on or off. As you can imagine, this is not a good thing, they will think the button is set to off, but it is on instead. I have been a long time user of Jaws, however, I am a little disappointed in the response of the person from your technical support line. She was a bit rude, she talked down to me, she did not have, or use a w-10 computer. I patiently explained to her, that I ran a w-10 and Jaws computer group. That I would not waist her time or mine by calling in, if I had not already verified this issue on three different computers with a sited person verifying What I was hearing. This is the Jaws claim number she gave me, ** Any help with this issue would be appreciated. Sincerely: James Flusche Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed reaching His goal. Love your Neighbor as you would yourself, God will truly reward you with good health. Hopefully this message has a subject - apologies for the previous two which didn't. One of those days. Hi Joanne, the following is a link to a guide to file explorer in Windows 8.1. It contains a section describing the ribbon in that program, and I don't think there are any changes in the ribbon in File explorer in Windows 10. http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/File-Explorer-8p1-Guide.html David. original message: I hope I won't get in trouble for possibly making this more of a thank you message, and yes those can clutter an in box. But I do want to say that, for example, in the case of ribbons, I appreciated David Bales' suggestions and they worked beautifully. I like that this group presents many approaches to the handling of apps and various work-arounds using Jaws. We're all learning, and for those of us who don't always understand new apps or layouts I appreciate help from those who can present an easier or, to me, familiar way of reaching my goals. I wouldn't mind learning more about ribbons and maybe there's a tutorial to explain them. But they don't make sense to me and I can't picture their layout or how to find their menus. Someone suggested turning the virtual ribbon feature off in Jaws and I know many others use it. I'd be glad to hear an explanation of what exactly they are and how to find the menus you need. I am using older email programs for this very reason--ribbons don't make sense. So if there's a tutorial that explains them thoroughly I would check one out if anyone knows of one. But in the meantime I'm so relieved there are still other ways to avoid them till I learn more. Joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] can ribbon menus be removed in windows 10
Hi Joanne, although you can't disable the ribbons, there are at least a couple of ways of changing the view setting which don't involve using the ribbon. The first is to use shortcuts. Press ctrl+alt+5 for a list view, and press ctrl+alt+6 for a details view. (Note these shortcuts were ctrl+shift+number in windows 8 and 8.1). The second is that with no items selected in the items view (you can press ctrl+spacebar to deselect an item if necessary), you can open a context menu, which contains a view sub menu. David. original message: I am using a friend's Windows 10 machine and I like being able to sort my songs and other lists in a list view. When I hit alt V hoping to see status bar, list, etc., I see lower ribbon and something about panes and I am really upset that I can't get rid of these things and go back to the ability to sort by details or list, etc. Can these ribbons be disabled? Hi Mike, just to point out that on window 8.1, most people don't need to install the desktop app. See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/onedrive/windows-app-faq#1TC=windows-81 David. original message: Hi James, One Drive is not as accessible as some other services like Dropbox, but it can be used. You will need the desktop app, and stay away from the One Drive web page. When you open the app and click on the One Drive button, the files and folders that you have uploaded will appear. The controls for what you can do with these files and folders are found in the Context Menu, by pressing the Applications key or right clicking an unselected area in the program interface. Here you will see options such as Open, Copy, Cut, Create a Link, etc. I am almost certain that if one could see the screen and the elements present there, the program would be much easier and comfortably used. A free account on Dropbox, however, which will get you 2 gb of storage is very accessable. A 1 tb subscription to Dropbox is $9.99/month. Re: [JAWS-Users] using Microsoft one-drive with Jaws
Hi Mike, I think you'll find that it appears twice: once in your users folder, and again at the same level as your users folder. I guess they want you to be able to easily find it. Re: [JAWS-Users] using Microsoft one-drive with Jaws
Hi Jim, just to add that at the moment, you can't create links for sharing onedrive files using file explorer in 8.1, but this functionality is coming - the following text is taken from a recent post on the OneDrive blog: Easier sharing straight from Windows Explorer. We are thrilled to deliver another top feature request that gives people who use Windows 7 and 8 the ability to quickly get links to content in their OneDrive folder without needing to go to the web. By simply right-clicking the item or items you’d like to share, you’ll see a “Share a OneDrive link” option that will create a sharing link and add it to your Clipboard. From there, you can paste it directly into an email, IM, or other message. This feature has begun rolling out to OneDrive on Windows 7 and 8 and will be available worldwide within a few weeks. We’ll update you as this becomes available on Windows 8.1 and Mac. Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting to the start or end
Hi, just to add that there is in fact a third difference, which I probably didn't make clear: 3. If the initial item is unselected, then if there are any selected items between that item and the end of the list and you press ctrl+shift+end, then the focus moves to the end of the list, and those items are deselected. (Shift+end selects from the item to the end of the list.) David. original message: Hi Kimsan, thanks for raising the fact that ctrl+shift+home/end works in a list. It made me go back to microsoft's documentation to check it out. The brief answer is that in most cases you can use either shift+home/end or ctrl+shift+home/end. However, there are some minor differences between these two keystrokes: 1. Perhaps the most important difference is for shift+home, or end or up/down arrows, whether or not the initial item is selected has no effect on the outcome. For example if the first item in a list is the focus, then whether or not this item is selected, if you press shift+end, then this selects all the items in the list. If the first item is unselected and you press ctrl+shift+end, then the focus moves to the last item, but the selection of no items are changed. 2. If you're someway down the list then after pressing shift+end, the items to the end of the list are selected, and the remaining items are unselected, even if they where selected before pressing shift+end. This isn't the case when pressing ctrl+shift+end. (but see the link below - you need to know where the anchor is to work out exactly what will happen). [JAWS-Users] Selecting to the start or end
I think there is confusion between the two cases of lists and documents. In the case of a list, where multiple items can be selected, to select from the current item to the start of the list, press shift+home. Similarly to select from the current item to the end, press shift+end. In the case of a document: 1. to select from the start of the document up to, but not including the current character, press ctrl+shift+home. 2. to select from the start of the line up to, but not including the current character, press shift+home. 3. to select from the current character to the end of the document, press ctrl+shift+end. 4. to select from the current character to the end of the line, press shift+end. Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 8download folder
Hi Teressa, just to clarify the use of windows key + q. This keystroke is primarily used for searching within an active window 8 style app. For example, if the news app is open, then if you press windows key + q, type in some search terms and press enter, then the contents of the news app is searched. However, if a windows 8 app is not active and you press windows key + q, then the search defaults to apps, programs, other items pinned to the start screen, + libraries and a small number of folders, including the downloads folder. Hi Lenny, Although there's no search box on the windows 8 start screen, if you start typing, then a search pane automatically appears, and your text is entered into a search box in this search pane. Re: [JAWS-Users] FAQ ON Re: Stopping IE9 & 10 From Blocking Downloads
Hi, just to add that if you're on the notification bar, in other words if one of the buttons on the notification bar is the focus, then you can also make it disappear by pressing esc. David. original message: Mike, That's true. This from the Notification Bar FAQ IN IE9: Can I turn off the IE9 Notification bar? No, but you can click the Close button on the right side of the bar make it disappear. The bar will also disappear if you navigate away from the current page. [My comment: If you then navigate back to the current page, it willl reappear in all of its damned glory!] For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] IE10 Download Sounds
Hi Rose, you can change it to a different sound if you want. 1. Open the sound dialog from the control panel. 2. Move to the sounds page. 3. Tab to the tree view and select Notification bar. 4. tab to the sounds combo box. By default it's set to windows information bar.wav. Change it to something else. David. original message: It is barely audible but it does work. Rose Combs For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] WLM12 and attachments
Hi Lisa, as Ann has already said, unfortunately you need to manually label the graphic, because this hasn't been done in the Jaws script for the program - I've no idea why not. If you need any more details, then it's covered in the guide. Go to the customizing windows live mail section, and there's a sub section on labelling graphics. David. original message: Hi, I've looked through the guide and either missed it or it wasn't covered in there, but I can't see when attachments are in emails. I know with OE there was a setting for how they are handled but I didn't see this anywhere under options. Can someone please tell me how to get attachments displayed so I can open or save them? Re: [JAWS-Users] Setting up rules in WLM 2012
HI Lisa, Windows live mail 2012 is nearly identical to windows live mail 2011, so you can use the guide to the 2011 version for setting up mail rules. David. original message: Hi, I'm using JAWS 14 Professional and am trying to find a better email client than Thunderbird so am currently using Windows Live Mail 2012. I'm liking it fine, but I want to be able to set up rules so my messages can go into the assigned folders. Is this possible with WLM 12? If so, how? I have the guide for 2011 and am not sure if that would apply for 2012 or not. Please, help? Thank you in advance. Re: [JAWS-Users] shutdown for windows eight
Hi David, just a quick post script. In both windows 7 and 8, an alternative to putting shortcuts to control panel items on the desktop is to make use of jump lists. Pin the control panel to the task bar, then in its jump list, pin the items which you use regularly. You can use first letter navigation in a jump list, so it's quick to find what you want. David. original message: Thank you for trying never the less. I did start a windows 8 page last summer but my resource stopped sending daily emails so for now it is at a stand still until I obtain new material. The thing about 7 is many shortcuts may be found by bringing them up in the search box and then doing a send to command to the desktop. If I can add to my 7 or 8 page for that matter some time I certainly will do so. David Ferrin For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] shutdown for windows eight
Hi David, you can send stuff to the desktop in windows 8, it just takes more steps. For programs, if you search from the start screen, open its context menu and choose open file location, you can create a shortcut from there. For details see the additional tasks section of this guide to the start screen: http://goo.gl/GwlKh For items in the control panel it's even more steps. If you search for settings using windows key + w, then there's no context menu to open the file location. So what you have to do is first pin the control panel item to the start screen. To do this, in file explorer, in the tree view, move to the control panel, then move down the tree to the control panel item that you want. Open its context menu and choose pin to start. The item will now be listed when you search for programs from the start screen, and so you can proceed as in the case of programs. David. original message: Thank you for trying never the less. Re: [JAWS-Users] shutdown for windows eight
Hi David, unfortunately I'm unaware of where to find all the shortcuts for windows 8. I looked the up the shutdown shortcut in the windows 8 inside out book, which I don't think contains many others. In fact it didn't have the correct shortcut, as it was changed in windows 8 rtm, and I had to check the options for shutdown using the command line. David. original message: David, if you could point me to a location where I may find shortcuts for windows 8 I would also like to host them as well if you wouldn't mind. Re: [JAWS-Users] nvda for google
Hi Karen, the problem is that Jaws reads one of these radio buttons as not checked, even if it is both visibly checked and the behaviour of google search indicates it is checked. NVDA has the same problem. The following works on this computer: 1. move to the first option, only when my computer is fast enough. 2. press enter to go into forms mode. 3. down arrow to never show instant results. This will now be checked even though jaws says it isn't. 4. press numpad plus to come out of forms mode. 5. move to the save button and press it. Note that on the google home page, I can still find a link for screen readers to turn off instant searches at the top of the page. David. original message: Well, everything suggested hasn't worked so far. I've turned on forms mode at the "never use google instant" and left mouse, spacebar, and enter don't do a thing. Unless I'm supposed to do something different like shift spacebar or insert enter, it won't check. I turned on the html elements with insert+f8 and still couldn't check it. GRRR! I guess my next option is to collect and install nvda. Thanks for the link. Karen For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] shutdown for windows eight
Hi, if you want a shortcut for shutdown in windows 8, you could use the following text: shutdown /s /hybrid /t 0 Note that including /hybrid is so that you get a fast start following the shutdown and this is specific to windows 8, and /t 0 means that the shutdown is immediate, whereas the default is 30 seconds. David. original message: Hi, Can someone send steps on how to create a shutdown icon on your desktop? I kind of remember where to go but don't remember the text to type. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] google settings in IE10
Hi Karen, on the settings page, if you move to the radio buttons, then press enter to go into forms mode, then you can use up and down arrow keys to select the option you want. David. original message: I turned on my computer this morning to find that IE10 had been installed. Now, I keep getting that horrible google instant when I go to my homepage. How can I stop that? In IE 9, I used to periodically get a link that said, "screen readers, turn off google instant". That worked but it's not coming up anymore. I've got jaws 14 latest, win 7, and now google wants to make me crazy. I managed, after some effort, to open the settings page in google. There's a set of buttons for when to use google instant. Fine, but when I am on the "never use google instant" spacebar, enter, and the left mouse button don't do a thing other than send me into forms mode! I tried with the jaws cursor and the left mouse button and nothing happened. Any suggestions? Re: [JAWS-Users] Any Windows 8 Mailing list for JAWS users?
Hi, concerning audio tutorials about windows 8, freedom scientific are giving a free webinar on Feb 13, and these webinars are archived. http://www.freedomscientific.com/training/Free-Webinars.asp David. original message: Hey gang, Well I've taken the plunge and have upgraded my OS to Windows 8 64 bit, and I'm really starting to regret doing so.I'm using the latest build of JAWS 14, and I'm finding it very difficult to do some things I've grown accustome to doing quite easily in previous versions of Windows. Not sure if this is due to the limitations of JAWS 14 or my lack of knowledge on navigating Windows 8, but I'm willing to learn. Just don't understand why Henter-Joyce hasn't posted some sort of audio tutorials on this subject yet.Are there any mailing list out there I can subscribe to for learning how to use JAWS with Windows 8? I know the list moderator doesn't like people posting off-topic things here, so please send this info to me privately for I don't want to get band for starting an off-topic thread here.
