[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-04-14 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Hopefully a few of you will remember the radio play: Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy.  It preceded the book by about a year.  Then on to
both television and to the movies.  But it began life as a multilayer
radiophonic tour de force in 1978.  The final episode of the Hexagonal
Phase of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was broadcast a few days
ago.  I am not sure how long they will be available for replay.  These
episodes are not as layered but even Zaphod has moderated a little with
age (and too many Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters).  If you are at all
interested look here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03v379k/episodes/player The Vogons are
quite ready to destroy something so get them while you can.

Our sun has one tiny speck on it but it has been rather windy
lately.  Maybe conditions will be better than they were last week.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Good Evening,

There were a few waves of static but mostly the signals were clear.
The ionosphere was moving today there were certainly a wide variety of
types of QSB.
Winter still has its hold on those in the Midwest.  Conditions have
been changing quickly on forty meters.  An hour later, soon. Using my
left hand?  Not soon.

Vroomfondel & Majikthise (union reps) were persuaded by Deep Thought
that they could clean up on the pundit circuit while he, worked on the
answer to the QUESTION: the question of life, the universe, and
everything.  Whose answer we all know as 42.

Deep Thought later mentioned the question may have been a little too broad.

2018-04-08 Thread kevinr
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Hexagonal Phase is currently being
broadcast directly from the BBC.  Only one episode left to find out what
happens to Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, and her daughter
Random.  As for Zaphod?  Well, he's just this guy, you know.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03v379k/episodes/guide

The first radio show came out in the late 70s.  Now, xx years later, we
are on part 6.

What makes the KE7X Elecraft book different than the Elecraft owner’s manuals?
Let’s start by saying the KE7X books do not have any information needed to
operate the radios that is not in the Elecraft Owner’s manuals. Owner’s
manuals are by design succinct and concise descriptions of the controls and
features of the radio. Elecraft manuals are very well done but I found during
my 40+ years as an EE prof that there are various ways that people learn. Some
are visual learners and learn by seeing diagrams and images, some can gain
comprehension just be reading. Others are more hands-on learners, needing the
“lab experience” to cement their understanding of the concepts. I’m a visual
and hands-on learner. When I first got my K3 I had trouble understanding how
the sub receiver worked and what the different antenna switching options were.
So I drew it out in a diagram and that made it much more clear to me. If that
helped me, wouldn’t it help others? So the idea of a K3 book was born. (The
original title was to be “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the K3” but I got talked
out of that!)
The concept that takes these books beyond the Elecraft manuals is support for
the visual, reading, and doing learning styles. There are many, many
diagrams. In the K3S book there are 131 diagrams, 16 on the sub receiver
alone. There are expanded explanations (and diagrams) for all radio operations
and in-depth explanations of topics such as the various controls for the
receiver’s AGC. And to top it all off, most topics have a “lab exercise” that
you can do sitting at your radio to make sure you understand the concept.
The printed versions of the books all have an index and, of course, the pdf
versions can be easily searched for what you are looking for.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-04-07 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The wind has been howling all day but the antennas are still up and
the power is still on.  So I spent the day watching the Masters and
practicing CW with my left hand.  After the first week or so it felt
less strange.  The biggest problem I have is to remember how to send
each character.  Over the years I have forgotten my lookup table.  It is
much like typing.  I think about what I want to write and my fingers do
the work.  I have to look at the keyboard to see where keys are but my
fingers know where to go without me thinking.  Sending code with my
right hand is like that.  I really need to think about each character
when I send with my left hand.

The paddles are wired oppositely from my working set of paddles so
the thumb and forefinger are doing the same thing with either hand.  It
is just there is no lookup table in my head telling me how to send.  So
I have been working my way through the alphabet and sending random
character groups; today I sent names from the leaderboard.  The first
week was quite frustrating but I'm getting better, gaining strength and
dexterity.  Sending too slowly confused me to no end so I set my
WinKeyer to about 18 wpm or so.  Once I raised the speed sending became
easier.  Now it is simply trying to remember how each character is
formed.  In a few months of practice I should be able to get on the air
with my non-dominant hand.  I am sure everyone will notice.

Re: [Elecraft] Fred's vs Elecraft manuals de KE7X

2018-04-07 Thread kevinr
I learn subjects more readily if they keep from diving into the
mathematics on page one.  I don't find the math difficult it just
distracts me from the broad brush strokes of concepts.  Once I get the
idea firmly in my head the mathematics helps me dig deeper. But starting
with the math just means it takes me longer to gain understanding.
Unless it is a math (or physics) course :)  Show me examples, explain
the examples, then dig into the equations.

It reminds me of my own EE student days. I found learning electronics
challenging because our texts started with math and the useful properties of
this or that circuit kind of fell out as a side effect or mini-miracle. Then I
discovered the text 'The Art of Electronics' which approached it from a
different angle and things clicked much more naturally for me.

I like Skip K6DGW's description of the two approaches to Elecraft as
orthogonal. So I think I get it. Thanks, all!

The Grim Reaper’s scythe has slipped between us most finely. Cutting the
best from amongst us. It is so very sad, we have lost so many but
acknowledge only the few :( WB3AAL or to me, “AAL” has gone Silent Key.
Each time I lose someone it seems to hurt just a little more. Most of
you I have never seen. I have never been in the same room as you. Why do
we feel such fellowship? Just little bits of RF we turn on and off. Why
does that connect us like brothers? The tightest kinship seems to be
those we can just barely hear. A guy like Ron who could never run his
rig (K2:SN #1392) above 5 watts. I offered to help with larger batteries
but he always declined :) Propagation permitting Mr. Ron Polityka was
always easy copy. Fine signal, better fist. You will be missed :(

20 m was much better than 40 m.  It may be time to move the 40 meter net
back to where it was at 0100z.  I'll wait one more week and try it again

KB5RF may have called but became ESP quickly.

[Elecraft] The new KX19

2018-04-01 Thread kevinr
Announcing Elecraft’s super secret KX19 with Time Displacement Circuitry
(patent pending).

If you want to run a multi-multi single op station simply time jump
repeatedly into the contest period from any other time during the year
(or century for that matter). Run stations for two hours and then rest
in another time. It will keep you fresh for those 500 Q/hr runs. Since
you will be well rested you can rack up extraordinary scores. The
standard liquid nitrogen cooling system is able to dissipate the waste
heat from the 25 Petawatt fusion reactor under normal use. Liquid helium
cooling systems are available on special order. Antigravity mods let you
take the KX19 on camping trips, ocean cruises, or even pedestrian
mobile. The additional 5 Petawatt power source for the antigravity
modules necessitates the liquid helium cooling module. Call Elecraft
today for a quote.

/Time displacement of 1957 ionospheric conditions is frowned upon by
most reputable contesters. Modifying the fusion reactor voids Elecraft’s
warranty. It may eliminate small sections of the continent too.
Alterations to the time displacement circuitry also voids the warranty
and may permanently place the user in another time stream. Each use of
the KX19 envelops the operator in their own pocket universe to minimize
the time paradox problem. Avoid having more than two KX19 transceivers
operating in close proximity. There is a slight danger of forming a
black hole when there are three running in one room. If you experience a
gravitational anomaly evacuate immediately and wait for a few hours
before returning. The micro black hole will have evaporated by then./

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-03-31 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Imagine you are driving on a gravel road during a cloudy day. You
come around a corner and see perfectly round spots of wet gravel
surrounded by dry gravel everywhere else. A few weeks later you drive
around that same corner on another gray day. This time the gravel is wet
but there are circular cutouts of dry gravel. Both conditions are not
uncommon here in the Pacific Northwest. What you saw in the first case
was caused by the fir trees capturing the water from the clouds and
dripping it unto their roots. The second case was just after it had
started raining. The gravel got wet in the normal fashion but the fir
trees once again captured the water. Only this time they had not
released it yet. I live either near a temperate rain forest or in it.
Odd things happen.
The sun actually has a very tiny spot on it.  First in a long time.
However, it is not something which is going to rattle the heavens.  The
ionosphere is getting fed by the solar wind, as always, it's just not
very windy these days.  But that is no reason not to get on the air.  It
is not really outdoor weather yet with the snow still on the ground
melting.  So warm up your rigs and call me.

The K3 now has a SAFE mode that disables DTR and RTS until it receives
some command like polling for frequency, mode, etc. from your software

You can go into the K3 CONFIG menu for KEY-PTT and turn it to unsafe
if you have devices that monitor the RS-232 bus and do not issue any

Look at the firmware release notes for the past 3 months.
BTW, the firmware release notes should be considered an addition to

Now to enjoy some of this sun.  It's pretty bright out there with all
the snow.  When it hit the trees this morning they unloaded all of last
night's new snow.  Where there was a foot of snow there is now about
four inches.  At this rate there may be some flooding down below.  The
birds did appreciate getting fed.  The Steller's Jays were actually
joining the crowd of Gray Jays. Normally they are pretty skittish but
hunger has a way of changing one's attitudes.  It did get quite noisy
with them all after the one open part of my deck.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-03-24 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

There was a knock on my front door.  I looked out the window only to
find a Washington County Deputy Sheriff in a very dirty uniform.  I
opened the door and invited him in to wash up but he smiled ruefully and
refused. So I walked out on the deck and handed him my garden hose.  As
he washed off some of the mud and clay he started to explain.   He had
been chasing some miscreant when they came up into our labyrinth of dead
end roads.  He told me he followed where his GPS told him to go. I could
not help but chuckle.  GPS can’t tell you where to go, it can only tell
you where you are.  A compass and an up to date map are far more
effective tools.

Just by looking at him I could tell which road he had gotten stuck in
near my house.  The 4WD folks from the area love to go out in groups and
drive a certain road and get themselves mired up to their axles.  They
travel in groups so they can pull each other out.   He agreed to the
location and asked me for help.  My F250 was in use and not available.
So I called my neighbor.  A third generation native who knows the elk by
name.  I told him the story, he laughed, and said give him ten minutes.
I relayed the information to the deputy and we sat on the deck to wait.
When my neighbor showed up I asked him to help the deputy find his
way around our mountain roads.  He was more than willing to help.  The
deputy came by a few days later in a much cleaner uniform and thanked
me.  He told me my neighbor took a few hours and showed him which roads
were passable and which were not.  The moral of the story: don’t trust
where your GPS tells you to go.

Propagation has been approved by Wayne himself.  Cool.  The solar wind
does have something to do with it too.  There may be some hiss and some
odd whistling noises but that is part of the fun.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] [OT?] Changing which hand you send with

2018-03-18 Thread kevinr
I've tried upside down before but I'll need practice sending normally
with the "wrong" hand.

   Thank you,

    Kevin.

with either hand.  I think it would be challenging, but certainly
do-able, to learn to send with the opposing hand later in life.

If you do that, be sure to swap the dot and dash leads on the key
paddle.  The dits should always be sent with the thumb and the dashes
with the finger no matter which hand you're using.

An alternative that I sometimes use as a temporary solution is to grab
the key paddle from the other side, with the hand over they keying
mechanism.

Hey Fred,
I know of one guitarist who was pretty good playing backward
guitar.  He was from Seattle and known as Jimi.  Regular guitar tuning
but backward because of the the northpaw conspiracy.  While I could just
barely throw a 90 mph fast ball (four seamer) right handed I could never
have thrown one left-handed.  However, it has been mentioned I may be
able to throw 20 wpm CW backwards. Hopefully I'll learn your
ambidextrous ways and keep ECN going for a few more years.  Yes,
baseball was my downfall.  Catching and pitching both took their toll;
but I had mountains of fun breaking those bones :)  And I NEVER had a
passed ball in my career.

   Thanks & 73,
   Kevin.

to guest op

~0% of northpaws learned to paddle left

I'm a southpaw, I learned to paddle right early, for the above two
reasons.  We live in a right-handed world ["Tyranny of the Majority"],
so it's probably easier for us to learn to do things right than it is
for you to do things left, we do it all the time.  Try a manual can
opener left-handed. [:-)

You can learn however, I know several who have switched to left. Some
paddle left with the paddle set to left [dots on thumb] and some do it
the other way.  I have two paddles, often switch off as I get older
... and older.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-03-18 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Sorry to those of you who heard the end of the forty meter net.  My
hand was no longer paying attention to me.  Too much typing for the last
two months has made it cramp up on me.  I can still type, albeit slowly,
but CW got near impossible for the last minute or two.  Unfortunately my
time at the keyboard will not slow until around the end of April when
this project is complete so please bear with me while I pain you with
poor CW.  I really should not have broken so many bones in my right
wrist, hand, and fingers when I was in my teens, thirties, forties, and
fifties.

QSB was high on both bands but worse on 20 meters.  I was able to
check into the Virginia QSO Party before the first net with a single
call so conditions to the east were good.  I had to repeat my number (NR
1) because I am sure he did not believe me :)  Then there is the
persistent problem of state.  Folks want me to be in OK not OR.  That is
my own fault since I like my call sign earned while I lived in New Mexico.

On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

K4JPN - Steve - GA

W0CZ - Ken - ND

On 7044.5 kHz at z:

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

Once again my apologies for poor sending.  When all the typing is
complete my fist may improve.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-03-17 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

After the first loggers had cleared a path through the northern
Coast Range they left open areas between the climax cedar and hemlock
forests. Homesteaders filled these areas spending years clearing out the
stumps and snags. Once a field was cleared they plowed it and tried
growing crops. They raised dairy cattle and a few sheep. Grass hay was
cut for fodder and fruit trees planted around the perimeter. Almost all
of these homesteads are now gone, buried by the second and third growth
of trees. Each year another one is knocked down by the logging companies
to prevent liability claims. Where there used to be small communities of
settlers there are now only stories.

The village of Bacona, only two miles from me, now consists of one
house with a few outbuildings. The only evidence of the homes which once
stood in my area are the daffodils blooming in seemingly random
locations. The crop which thrives in these conditions is trees just like
it was when we arrived. However, Douglas Fir has replaced the climax
forest species with a faster growing, succession tree.

Propagation has been enhanced by a new supply of ions.  The solar
wind has kicked up this week with lots of aurora around the world.  I'm
too far from the magnetic north pole to see any but the most intense.
When I lived in Wisconsin they were much more common.  There have been a
few clear nights recently but only a little star gazing.

Re: [Elecraft] 2D Fasteners

2018-03-16 Thread kevinr
The same principle has been used in woodworking for quite a long time.
My father learned it from his grandfather for cabinet making.  I am
currently watching the British '70s television series Connections.
Re-inventing things over the centuries is quite common.  The problem
which needs to be solved pushes the imagination of the builder into
crafting similar answers.

If you are referring to the aluminum angle stock, I used that back in

tap, so the holes were not precisely spaced. It worked well, and
complied with the TVI problem of that time (put everything in a

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-03-11 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It is amazing how good a walk on a sunny day feels; especially
after you've had three weeks of snow storms and grey. Another few days
like this and even the snow drifts will be gone.

While QSB on twenty meters was not too bad it was very deep, but
slow, on forty meters.  I gave one report of 529 to 589.  On both nets I
had to search to find an opening between the WQP folks.

   On 14048.5 kHz at 2200z:

K4TO & WM5F were both slightly above ESP.  When the QSB hit you guys you
were gone.  But ten seconds later you were back again.

the Pacific Theater and was a radar/radioman for the rest of the war in

it was kind of cool to be working with secrets even if they were 15

But since they were in such pristine condition I never could bring
myself to cut a wire or do any soldering in them.  They were works of art.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-03-04 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

I got a work out today.  Lots of signals from all over but QSB was
making it harder than normal.  One second at S7 and then to S1 or
worse.  But I was able to drag quite a few of you out. Florida on 40
meters while Connecticut came in on both 20 and 40 meters.  No Alaska
though whereas last week I got two of them and on both bands.  As the
sun comes back the bands change quickly. It is always a good sign when I
call CQ and am answered by one steady tone.  I don't get any call signs
but I know there are a bunch of you to thin out :)

I am surprised at how few of these I have not done.  However, they don't
list XC skiing to which I was addicted for many years. Great way to get
outside when the weather is below zero.  Skiing uphill can be fun but
the best is skiing to work and back.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-03-03 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

I actually saw sun today.  It has been a while.  The snow has been
coming down every day for the last two weeks so a break was nice.  The
days are also lasting longer and with that propagation has been getting
better.  With all the cold days it feels good to get warm.  Cold fingers
don't type very well nor do they work paddles with accuracy no matter
the speed.  Often it is easier to run faster because when I slow down my
fingers get stuck.  Maybe new hands would be the answer.  Fingers that
haven't been broken time and time again would really help :)

Good Evening,

QSB was deep on both bands, rapid at times too.  It was pretty
chilly in my shack today so my fingers would not work right.  I am
thinking of mounting a 5Y3 on the side of my K3.  The glow would be
comforting and it would allow me to warm my fingers when not sending.
The heater may draw more current but it's all for a good cause.

2018-02-24 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The solar wind is helping propagation on the lower bands.  40 meters
was open to the East Coast, SW, SE, and up into Canada last week.  The
reverse beacon net heard me all over the place.  Fast QSB was a problem
with a little noise.  Hopefully all the snow I have received over the
last week has cleaned things up.  Only this morning the trees were fully
loaded.  Then the sun came out and literally tons of snow fell.  Now
that the trees are almost bare the snowfall has returned.  It is going
to keep snowing for another week then probably go back to spring again.
Without a plan PNW winters will drive you crazy.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-02-10 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

“What’s that?!”, my visual cortex rapidly scanned its card catalog
seeking a best fit solution.  Another part of my brain was trying to
decide flight or fight while further processing power was devoted to
wondering why there was a bush where none had been before.  Then the
bush’s tail flicked and a black tailed deer resolved the confusion.  In
her winter coloration she was popping in and out of focus with the
background.  Since I had made no sound she kept munching the leaves of
the low lying bramble.   Brambles are a nasty vine covered with fine
spines which always trip me if I am not walking like there is a foot of
snow on the ground.   If you aren’t wearing leather gloves those spines
sink into your skin and irritate for a week.   She was efficiently
nipping the leaves off from along its length without noticing them.  I
would not have put my snout nearly as close to the spiny stem.  She ate
only a few feet from me for about fifteen minutes while I sat at my
computer reading the morning news.

The sun is active.  There are a few rapidly growing spots and the
solar flux has risen to 78.   There may be propagation available for us
to use.   Woo hoo! It has been a while.  Now to test this hypothesis.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-02-06 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It's early February and the Pennsylvania rodent says winter will
last a little longer.  But here I actually saw sun, for twenty minutes
at least.  Then the mountain ran into a cloud.  It pays to have a plan
when it comes to the PNW's rainy season.  A stack of text books, a stack
of movies, a little fiction, and enough AA batteries to get on the air.
I also have a stack of blank paper which calls out to me.  With a little
planning the gloomy season passes quickly.  In fact it is almost time to
clean out the hummingbird feeders and get ready for their arrival.

Propagation remains spotty while the sun mostly isn't.  Some aurora
so solar wind is keeping us fed.  Hopefully well enough to work out East
on twenty meters and more locally on 40.  Remember I usually show up on
frequency (or nearby) about ten minutes before the hour.  If there is
danger of fading just send your call to get my attention.  There is
nothing keeping me from logging stations early.

For those of you aching to learn about logging and all its gadgets go here:

http://www.vannattabros.com

It has all sorts of topics and photos and is about this area.  A lot of
broken terrain logging techniques were developed in my neighborhood.
The narrow gauge tracks are still visible in some locations.  There was
a cedar mill only a mile from my house with a dance hall (etc.) next to
it.  The nearby town - Bacona no longer exists but leaves its name on
roads.  Where there had been many homesteaded houses there are only a
few left standing. Farming does not work up here unless you are cropping
stands of Doug Fir.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-27 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The rainy season coincides with the logging season. Since it is so
wet fire danger is near zero. Skidding logs during the dry season can
start fires just from the friction between logs. During the wet there is
little need for the fire watch crew to stand guard for a week after a
clearcut has been graded and transported to the mill. Normally the
loggers cut stands in full sections so the Coast Range is a checkerboard
on a mile square grid. On my way to town this week I passed through four
active sites before I got to my mailbox in Buxton.

When you meet a logger in town they are easy to recognize. The
thousand yard stare is a tipoff, they are dead tired from on the job
since 4 AM. Their attire is obvious too: suspenders, no belts - ever;
they’re wearing slippers; and the cuffs of their jeans have been ripped
off with both seams cut upward an inch or two. The slippers are because
they normally wear corks which would shred any flooring or the cab of
their truck. Suspenders and ripped seams are due to the nature of their
work. Most non-fatal injuries are from being crushed by logs so the
ripped seams and suspenders allow rapid access to their limbs.

Mostly they make great neighbors except for being awakened by large
timber hitting the earth or when they drop stumps into very large steel
containers. Luckily the sound only carries about five miles or so and
you get used to the whumping sounds over the years. Each time they open
a new block the view of the terrain opens up too. I can now see the top
of my mountain from a number of angles.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-01-21 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Never foreshadow a power outage!  This one lasted from well before
dawn until a few minutes ago.  The high winds overnight blew trees into
the feeder lines from Bonneville Dam.  Required outage supplies: Coleman
gas, large package of AA batteries, a Mini Mag-light in my pocket all
day long.  Oh, and firewood. Instead of starting with magazines I went
straight to the tensor book and worked problems.  The stillness and
gloom lends itself to study.  Once my eyes started crossing I switched
to writing software the old fashioned way - on paper.  Now I get to
edit, compile, and run them.  Those routines should be faster now.

Sorry I could not run either net but I don't have sufficient
alternative power to run the radios at more than a few watts. Hopefully
the weather will be less inclement next week and the ionosphere fully
recharged.

73,

 Kevin.  KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-20 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It has been a very good day to sit by the fire and read.  The best
time to catch up on my reading is when the power goes out; there is
nothing else to do :)  A few days reading by kerosene lantern is enough
to get caught up on month's of books and magazines.  When those are done
I get out the math books and work on tensors.  Maybe one day they'll
come naturally.

The days are a few minutes longer but the sun is no more active.
Solar winds have kept the ionosphere from collapsing but only just.  I
expect my signal will land near the East Coast.  I have been hearing a
lot of 1 calls very well over the last month. For five to ten minutes
they have good signals and then the QSB eats them then another signal
pops out of the mist.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-01-14 Thread kevinr

Whew!

Not all that noisy on either band but deep QSB made life
interesting.  One moment I give a 539 and they come back with a 229.
Hmmm... I need to work on my antennas :(  Once the loggers come in next
Spring and take out a few large, dead trees I can rearrange my
antennas.  Until then they will remain in place if weather allows.

Except for those folks from California the rest of us are due for a
week of inclement weather.  Sorry, I should rephrase that: we're all in
for some heavy weather over the next week.  So, a plan - stick next to
your wood stove, keep the batteries charged, and stay on the air.  There
are fish out there!

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-13 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It was a beautiful day to take a hike. Sunny, 50 degrees, with
spiders building webs in hope of catching the early insects. The bracken
fern has died back to where the contours of the ground are exposed
allowing me to find footing with little danger. Normally they range from
3 feet to 7 feet in height hiding any deadfalls and burrows. I was able
to break a trail to a nearby intermittent stream. Before the forest had
been clearcut the stream to my south flowed year round. Now it is
seasonal until well below my elevation. As the forest regrows it becomes
steady at ever higher elevations. Great place to build a blind to
monitor the elk who bed nearby. With the fern die off they are walking
new trails which I follow. Elk are tall enough to find paths where I
don’t have to duck; our local Black-tailed deer are much shorter. Often
their trails coincide but when a branch intervenes the elk walk around
while the deer duck beneath it. I am lazy, I follow the elk path.

The sun has sent us some ions, the aurora are active over Hudson
Bay. Once this storm settles down we may have improved propagation. One
can never tell. But radio is like fishing: if you don’t make a few casts
you’ll never catch a fish and if you don’t catch a fish at least you
were out fishing – can’t beat that.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2018-01-07 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

I got a very strange look from a Gray Jay on Friday.  I was getting
ready to do the dishes so gave them bits of this and that for a treat.
A little popcorn, some oatmeal, a little rice, a heel of bread, and some
beans.  The beans were what gained me the look.  I had made them with
three fresh, sliced jalapeños. There is just no accounting for tastes :)

Twenty meters was long again.  As I was looking for an open
frequency I heard W1AET very well from Georgia.  There was also a lot of
noise on it.  Forty meters only had a few "whistlers" pass through but
was fairly quiet in comparison.

   On 17049.5 kHz at 2300z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

AB9V - Mike - IN

K6XK - Roy - IA

K4JPN - Steve - GA

   On 7044.5 kHz at 0100z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

K7TV - Erik - AZ

From all the weather reports I received it appears the cold snap is
moving out of the Midwest and South.  Folks in the Northeast are still
rather chilly.  Makes this a good time of year to sit next to the fire
in front of your Elecraft rig working a new one.

   Until next week 73,

Eventually somebody will come looking for it, possibly accompanied by the local

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-06 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Weather has returned to normal: foggy, rainy, and mild.  I remember
the cold of Wisconsin winters and am not missing it. Hopefully the folks
out east will get a reprieve from the icebox soon.  Plumbers will be
making a lot of money as they repair the numerous broken pipes.

The sun may not be blank but it is not very active.  With an SFU of
69 propagation won't be very good.  As long as I am not skunked the nets
will be OK.  There is a solar stream due on Monday, maybe that will perk
things up a bit.

Please join us tomorrow on:

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-12-31 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

A stead hiss, not quite a roar, plagued both nets.  QSB gave a
light flutter.  Then there were those screeching, frequency drifting
interruptions.  I dream of seeing the "inner" surface of the ionosphere
in real time so I could correlate sound to the bending radio waves.  The
whistlers and screechers are those I'd study more closely.

Weather reports of daytime temperatures in the Midwest were not
warm.  Far from it in fact - each reporter made sure I knew the figure
was less than zero.  My brother, from SW Wisconsin, has been grumbling
lately of the sub zero weather.  Hopefully it won't last long.  Stay
warm guys!

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement

2017-12-30 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Christmas day was white and it remained so for a few days.  Then ice
and back to rain.  Today was surprisingly sunny and the moon is shining
brightly.  The coyotes are making a lot of noise as the pack moves
past.  They enjoy the break in the cold and wet but I think the moon is
effecting them too.  It had been pretty silent during the cold, it is
nice to have the birds and beasts back again.

The sun has been spotless with flux slowing too.  Since the storms
aren't creating much lightning the noise should be low. Maybe the quiet
conditions will allow us to work the weakened signals.  We can test them
tomorrow with our last nets of 2017.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-12-17 Thread kevinr
Whew!  Both bands were rather noisy.  Waves of scratchy QRN moved
through the frequencies.  QSB was medium to deep, but slow.  When I
checked 14050 kHz before the first net I heard K1ECU calling CQ very
clearly.  If I would have had the time I would have replied. I moved up
to 14050.5 kHz to hold a space when three stations popped up each
calling CQ.  So I moved down to 14049.5 kHz and found a free spot.

On 14049.5 kHz at 2300z:

NO8V - John - MI

W0CZ - Ken - ND

As I was tuning in on forty meters I found lots of activity.  One op on
7045 kHz so I moved up.

On 7045.5 kHz at 0100z:

W8OV - Dave - TX   clear and loud after so long an absence

K0DTJ - Brian - CA   calling for rain clouds to travel southward with
his KX2

WG7V - Marv - WA  strong signal once again

K6PJV - Dale - CA  gave me a weak RST - I do believe the bands are long
tonight

W0CZ - Ken - ND   off until next year

AE6JV - Bill - CA   noise was trying to cover you but it did not

Until next week

2017-12-10 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Conditions were poor to abysmal.  Slow QSB with moving bands of
screeching QRN.  Both stations from the Midwest were good one moment and
down two S units the next.  But it sounds like the worst weather missed
those of you who could hear me.  Dry conditions for everyone due to a
sunny week.  While this is helpful to me it's not to those in tinder dry
California.  The forecasters say rain for later this week; hopefully
that will cover the entire West Coast.  Even a cessation in the high
winds would help.

2017-12-09 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

A dusting of snow started this sunny week.  Each night into the
upper 20s, each day up into the 40s.  Great week to collect wood and
bring it home.  I have enough to get me through the end of the year now
to get another two month's worth in before the rains return.  Since I am
only cutting out dead trees it burns pretty hot.  Hopefully January will
be as mild as December has been.  The way it is I can heat the room by
just driving the graphics card a little harder.  CUDA is fun!

The sun is blank.  SFU is below 70.  I may need to start fishing for

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-12-03 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Conditions were not good.  Double plus ungood in fact.  But I was
skunked on neither band.  That counts as a win :)  I was pushed off the
initial net frequency in each case.

On 14050.5 kHz at 2300z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

N5NF - Watt - TX

On 7045.5 kHz at 0100z:

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

At one point on twenty meters I was chasing an ESP K1J? station but QSB
was deep.  Deep on both bands.  On twenty there was a slow up and down
signal overlain by a fast flutter.  Forty meters had only the slow QSB
but plenty of noise did not help.

Maybe the sun will arise from its slumber and hit us with a decent CME
late in the week.

   Kevin.  KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement

2017-12-02 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Another parcel of cloud pushes its way through a gap in the nearby
mountains. It slides, tumbles its way down to a low area. Gradually this
space fills with low layer of mist. As it fills the fog becomes more
dense. I start seeing waves as an aliquot of cloud hits the ‘lake’
forming in the valley. The gap is about two miles away; the wave caused
by the tumbling cloud meeting the surface takes about three minutes to
get to my location. It is still clear and sunny up here but that is
changing. A misty layer is forming around me. When the wave from the
last dollop of cold cloud hits my side of the valley the ‘breakers’ get
to near my feet. Six minutes per sine wave works out to ~0.0028
Hz.  There and back again.

The sun is currently blank though the solar wind is still causing
aurora. We just missed a CME and are due for another chance on Monday.
So we will use the ions given us and see how far that takes us.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday (3 PM PST Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (5 PM PST Sunday)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-11-26 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It seems like the CQWW contest used up the propagation. However, I
was able to land a few check ins on this Thanksgiving weekend.  Lots of
noise with a medium speed flutter from QSB.

On 7046 kHz at 0100z:

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

WM5F - Dwight - ID

We talked a little about the new low bands and getting set up to use
them.  Upgrading my K3 is on the calendar for late in 2018. Currently I
am upgrading a few of my computers and the network so my money is spoken
for.  When the next dry season rolls around it is time for more antenna
work.  But until then I'm sure my trusty K3 will keep working well.  If
not the K2 is always there to fill any gaps.

Now it is time to get back to work and exercise off any added calories
this holiday gave us.

Until next week 73,

    Kevin.  KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2017-11-25 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
I hope you are all having a great Thanksgiving weekend.  Soon it
will be back to work; but before that comes our way you can try the
Elecraft CW Net.  The sun, even though it is quiescent, is still
throwing ions our way, enough to allow propagation.
ECN is a directed net.  If you use 'hail signs' during call up it is
easier for me to collect more operators.  Since the paths don't change
much from week to week I can usually figure out who you are.  If not I
will call to check.  Even if you can not hear me I may still be able to
hear you very strongly.  Any limit to QRM is appreciated.
Due to CQWW the twenty meter net is canceled.  The forty meter net
will start right after the contest ends.  Wait for the call and I'll
check you in one by one.

Please join us tomorrow on:

7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (5 PM PST Sunday)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-11-19 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The forty meter net just ended.  Conditions were a little noisy
with various types of QSB.  From Alaska there was a flutter, from North
Dakota there was none, and from California there was a slow, rolling
wave (must be the surfer effect :).  Twenty meters had QSB too but
fantastic signals from mostly the Eastern US. Ken, working from the Red
River Valley, was the only westerner. While I did get one report of 13
degrees the rest were pretty seasonal.

   On 14050.5 kHz at 2300z:

NO8V - John - MI

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K6XK - Roy - IA

K4JPN - Steve - GA

  On 7045.5 kHz at 0100z:

W0CZ - Ken - ND

K0DTJ - Brian - CA  TNX for the QSP work

K6PJV - Dale - CA

KN5L - John - TX

KG7V - Marv - WA

KL7CW - Rick - AK

Until next week : Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2017-11-18 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

High humidity days are very common in the Pacific Northwest during
the rainy season. You need to work slowly so you don’t overheat when the
humidity is at or near 100%. When I walked through the fog I cut a path,
leaving eddies in my wake. After slowly moving a few bucked trees up to
where I could drive my truck the forest became very quiet. I looked up
and saw blue sky straight overhead. The area became brighter quickly.
Then I noticed the fog changing. At first it looked like tiny, hanging
rain drops stationary all around me. Then they grew to where they were
too heavy to hang. In a moment it rained hard and all the fog was gone;
it was a sunny day. From the silence and brightening to the final deluge
took just a few seconds. Dense fog to a clear, sunny day in what seemed
to be the blink of an eye.

The sun has a few tiny spots and the flux rate is slightly higher
than last week.  A solar storm is due tomorrow or the next day.  If our
timing is off there may just be a steady, loud hissing noise and no CW.
If our timing is right propagation may be better than it has been in a
while.  It all depends.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday (3 PM PST Sunday)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2017-11-12 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Conditions on twenty meters were long; on forty meters not so
much.  Waves of noise now and then with plenty of QSB.  The sun is still
buffeting the ionosphere.

On 14050 kHz at 2300z:

NO8V - John - MI  in and out of the noise

W0CZ - Ken - ND  running his factory rebuilt K3S

K6XK - Roy - IA   reporting frosty weather

K4JPN - Steve - GA  with overcast and 50 degrees (cold?)

On 7045 kHz at 0100z:

KG7V - Marv - WA   booming signal but cannot hear me at all

W0CZ - Ken - ND   one inch of new snow  (Winter?  Now?)

K0DTJ - Brian - CA   sunny skies and relatively warm

Enjoy your week,

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2017-11-11 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It is definitely the rainy season; only a few times has the rain
actually stopped.  No gulley washers, just steady, soaking rain.  The
smell of the forest changes a great deal from the dry summer spice to
the musky, wet scents of decay.  If anything the steady rain of fir
needles has increased.

The sun is having its season too.  Ten days now without a spot.  But
there have been strikes of solar wind.  SFU is in the 60s so I expect
conditions to be weaker but quieter.

Notice the time change.  Local time stays the same (at least in
those parts of the world who participate in Daylight Savings Time).

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-10-26 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Propagation has been good most of the week. The sun has been
active. Spaceweather.com has some interesting facts about the week's
solar activity. Multiple active sunspots with more M and X class flares
probable. Ten meters and lower have been fun to monitor. Lots of DX.
But there are CMEs possible which may interfere with comms. So either
propagation will be good or non-existent, who can tell?

2013-10-19 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
A very sunny week made it easy to collect wood. Now to get it all
home before the ground is too wet for my loaded truck to move. The
forecast is for at least another week of sun so I will have a great work
out by the time it starts raining. Looks like I'll fill my F-250 over a
dozen times. If there is any left next June I'll know I had enough.

Propagation was decent to good this week. I am reading reports of
openings on 10 and 12 meters too. If that holds for one more day I'll
be kept busy with check ins tomorrow. The sun is also setting earlier
so many of you will be in dark during the forty meter net. That
normally means I'll hear a sweep across the country while I work check
ins. If we can work from East to West Coast it will help.

Re: [Elecraft] End fed antenna - length and SWR

2013-10-08 Thread kevinr

Hi Dave,
If you want to check in with anyone in Oregon you may want to
change the orientation of your antenna. You are at right angles to the
main land or Asia with that wire the way it is now. There just aren't a
lot of folks north and south of you. Accept geography and try another
direction :)

Hi folks,

Newbie HF Dave here again with an end fed antenna design question.

I have an EARCH (Emergency Amateur Radio Club, Hawaii) end fed 6-40 meter
multiband HF antenna. Part of the design is the 9:1 UNUN (unbalanced to
unbalanced) toroid matching transformer. I have replaced the 30' wire with 66.5
feet of 18AWG Wireman silky 532. My end fed is in a horizontal (slight slope)
orientation, east-west. The antenna is about 50' above the ground (I have a 3
story house and pine trees close by).

I do not have an external antenna analyzer, yet.

Using the ATU in my KX-3, I have the UNTUNED SRW values below. With the KX-3
ATU, the KX-3 DOES tune all of these bands with no problem.

Question: Should I do anything to improve QRP performance, shorten/lengthen the
wire, or should I just go with the flow, hang loose and not worry and just
enjoy my rig?

REMEMBER, newbie Dave, be gentle. I've been tracking the long wire discussions
on the list, there is lots of fervor.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-10-05 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
After last week's wind and rain today is very nice. Back to short
sleeve weather for a while. The elk are moving through and so are the
hunters. As I watch out the window it is interesting to see deer only
minutes after a truck passes. When I am out splitting wood I find deep,
hard trails where they cross the property.
Propagation was much improved yesterday from the solar blast.
Hopefully that will continue. I was off the air for a while because of
the storm last week. At the end of the forty meter net I was driven off
the air by QRN. This is fairly normal for 40 meters at that time of
day. But I could not hear the sidetone in my earphones due to the high
winds. For once in Oregon the rain was going sideways and upward.
Seals got tested and did pretty well. I am glad the bottoms of the
trees did not move.

I need to get this out before I lose my Internet access. Tonight I
am to receive approximately 10 inches of rain with winds up to 80 mph.
Currently my connection is terrible; I only expect it to get worse. I
should lose power tonight when the broken trees fall through the power
lines. The battery bank is fully charged so I will be able to run the
nets tomorrow if the antennas and house are still here.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-09-22 Thread kevinr

Good Morning,
The weather has limited my Internet access over the past day. Heavy
rain and clouds between me and the tower makes it tough for the packets
to pass forth and back. Even during the heavy weather the elk hunters
are hopeful. Last night during a lull in the storm I was out to get
wood when I startled a bull elk. He was not amused, he tried to
intimidate me by stomping his hooves accompanied by loud snorting. They
don't like surprises.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-09-15 Thread kevinr

Good Morning,
After an unseasonably warm week it is back to normal again:rain,
fog, and cool. Currently it is booming outside so all the antennas are
unplugged. Two thunderstorms in less than two weeks is very unusual.
Propagation has been decent though.

All of the talk about net procedures is very good. It would be nice
to have an NCS on either side of the country. At one point we did have
three net controls who worked stations by call area. That was when
propagation was much better than it is now. Unfortunately Tom has left
us and propagation has gone with him. I may need to rewrite the net
procedure list I wrote a few years back and post it.

The Elecraft net previous to mine lasted only a year. I tried a
number of times to check in but never was able to be heard. Even with
the 100 watt amplifier my K2 could not make it to the net control
station in Louisiana. Within a month of those attempts I started the CW
net in June of 2002. Over the years I have been skunked only once.
Some weeks it has been tough going but I always get some participation.

Now that there are many more Elecraft rigs around, including those
with external amplifiers, the voice net has been revived and is doing
well. Please try your hand at CW folks, it is a lot of fun.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-09-07 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
The sun is setting much earlier now. All those extra hours of light
during the summer let me get outside after dinner. That is no longer
true. I did step out onto the deck during dusk and had a doe watch me.
The red of the setting sun and her coat had much the same hue; it was
only her shape which made her show up. Once her shape resolved I said
hello and she wandered off.
Propagation has been decent to good this week. There was some
fading but the signals were so loud they were easy to copy through the
dips. Thunderstorms were present too; with an unusual one passing over
my house. I heard the rumbles and unhooked antennas. But as usual the
cloud to ground lightning was limited to the Columbia River valley north
of me though there was cloud to cloud activity near me.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-31 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
A chilly wet week began the rainy season. Quite early this year but
the forecast is for little sun and more rain. Luckily it doesn't get
too wet to work outside and the cool temperatures are good for cutting
wood. Great exercise once your body becomes acclimated to the abuse. I
should be able to move my fingers much better tomorrow.
Propagation over the week had a lot of QSB just like last Sunday.
The sun angle is changing rapidly as are the hours of daylight. Last
week's nets had propagation moving quickly. One minute a certain area
was very strong and the next second they were gone. Power levels meant
little. If the conditions were right at that moment it worked.
Otherwise there was just noise.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-24 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
During this week summer changed to fall. Nights were crisper and
the smell of the forest has changed. Luckily it has been a fairly moist
year with all of the fog. Very, very little rain but when the fog rolls
in the trees rain on themselves. Fire danger has not gotten very high
this summer; hopefully it will continue so until the rainy season begins.

Propagation was decent to good this week on my skeds into Alaska.
Some flutter but the sun has been shooting at us again. According to
Space Weather another CME is due to hit. Aurora alerts for tonight so
those of you closer to the magnetic pole may get a treat. I may have
seen aurora here in Oregon but nothing like what I have seen in
Wisconsin. Half the sky red with long streamers shooting from north to
south horizons faster than I can write it. I once watched as the
initial burst changed into a more stable display of drifting curtains.
Over the space of two hours I saw all the standard features along with
more colors than the normal light green. Blue and red were common that
night.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-17 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Propagation was rather good this week with the normal summer QRN
and some QSB. Weather was pleasant, if cool. Our normal dry season had
a few very light showers. Luckily the fog the stormy weather brings
provides enough moisture to keep the forests from burning. Fall is
coming. The trees' new growth of spring has changed into old growth and
the foxgloves are all but done blooming.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-10 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
It has been a very nice week with mild temperatures and mostly sunny
days. Currently the thunder is booming though I've not seen any
lightning. This is very rare for the PNW. When I first started hearing
rumbles I was thinking military jets. But when the sky got a charcoal
grey my Midwestern weather genes kicked in and I started unhooking all
of my antennas. I do have to fight the urge to close all the windows
since the rain rarely falls up here :) In Wisconsin there was no
telling where all of the rain was going; you were going to get wet no
matter what you did.

Propagation was good most of the week and hopefully tomorrow's
forecast thunderstorms will be displaced from me either in time or
distance so I can run the net without losing my eardrums. I have run
the net while the rain was falling so hard I could not hear through my
headphones. When the roof creaks from snow load it is not so bad. If I
hear thunder while I am on the air I will go SK quickly.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-08-04 Thread kevinr

Good Morning,
After a chilly week the temperatures are climbing back into the
upper 60s again. It feels good not having to heat the house. Summer
should be a time where I can work on my garden rather than carry wood.
It was nice to receive some precipitation though since fire danger was
rising. Hopefully we will get more rain between now and October.

Propagation was great yesterday on 20 meters. Even with the sun as
calm as it is now there are still ions flitting about. I scanned 15 and
18 meters yesterday and found they were both open. I was hearing well
across the ocean into Asia. Lots of JAs and some Russian stations.
Other, weaker stations, popped up now and then too. I keep trying 10
meters but have yet to hear anyone up there. I am not sure at which
time of day this band opens. My listening efforts have all been during
mid-day from 11 AM to around 2 PM.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2013-07-20 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
I got caught up on a few old net reports and got out to enjoy the
sun. It has cooled such that each morning in am in heavy fog so the
trees mine it and rain. Today was a little different because it rained
not only under the trees but all over. It is good to get the moisture
so the fire danger does not grow any worse. Logging has stopped for the
dry season so it is very quiet up here. Soon the elk will be bugling.
Between them and the coyotes I could record a nice background track.
The veeries will add their mixed rising and falling notes and I could
catch the nighthawks in a series of their noisy power dives.

Propagation was alright until the latest CME. Yesterday I heard a
lot of noise and little else. Another influx of ions is due this
weekend so conditions may be poor tomorrow. But you never can tell.
One week forty meters is tough while the next it is much nicer. If the
ion storm is done soon conditions tomorrow may be very good indeed. If
we don't get on the air we will never know.

Please remember to zero beat the NCS. It is tough trying to find you
when you are deep in the skirts of my filters or well off to the side.
I have used RIT to try to improve each caller's signal but chasing all
over the place is not easy while I am logging too.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-07-13 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
A fine week in the Pacific Northwest. The dry season is here with
no rain in sight. Just the morning fog dropping its normal amount of
moisture. The hummingbirds have been very active catching insects
between the fir branches. I am also seeing elk sign every time I go for
a hike. I never see the sneaky beasts but they are all around me.

Propagation has been fairly good the times I have tried it. The sun
has been adding its daily dose of ions with no really big blasts. I
have heard some static from it but not enough to limit communications.
The QSB it causes is more of an impediment.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-07-06 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
After a long, hot week it is cooling back to normal. Feels good not
baking in the sun. Propagation was better for the times I was on twenty
meters but I have yet to find any activity on six meters. It is always
fun when six is open.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

I was just reviewing my copy of Balanis and remembered the grueling
effort of the class. I took it in grad school with a crazy Greek
professor who worked with Balanis. He wound up being my thesis advisor :)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-06-29 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
Last week it was rainy and chilly. This week has turned out very
different. Humid, even for here, and temperatures in the 80s. That
means the folks who don't live on a mountain are cooking. In the
morning the humidity is often at 99%. When it is chilly it's not so
bad; except when you have to work in it. At 80 degrees it gets tiring.
I have seen many UFOs in the last two days, though the sweat on my
glasses made them hard to distinguish.

Propagation was decent to so-so during the week. Hopefully the heat
won't play havoc on the bands tomorrow. I know the Midwest will have
thunderstorms galore which will block much of the forty meter net. The
twenty meter net may work well for us. During field day I tried it at
all times of the day and was able to make a contact. I had never used
it at night before.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net

2013-06-21 Thread kevinr

Good Evening and Happy Longest (or Shortest) day of the year.

In North America we have a radiosport holiday starting tomorrow (or
today in some aspects). So there will be both no room for the net and
no net control. He will be off working contacts from various
locations. Where ever there is a tree and a dry spot to sit can be a
choice. One wire up, one wire down. It will be fun. Logging will be
quite old fashioned: 3x5 cards with a golf pencil :) Needless to say I
am not out to win any awards but I will get to test a number of spots
for antennas.

Please have a fun and safe Field Day. ECN will recommence on the
following week when we have all had a good rest and rebuilt our stations.

   Kevin. KD5ONS

Traditionally it is vertical polarization for FM and horizontal for SSB
and CW.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-06-15 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
After a chilly, wet week the sun has come out and the temperature
rose to 62 degrees. It is nice to be warm again. Gardening is tough
when your seeds won't germinate. The doe I saw last weekend may have
been the mother of the fawn I saw yesterday. She was trying to be
invisible until I glanced down and saw her ears quivering.

Propagation was better this week. On the days I was able to get on
the air I could hear and be heard. What more can you ask? I did hear a
sound I'd never heard before; at least not outside of a science fiction
movie. It sounded like someone was playing a theremin in the
background. It was loud in Alaska as well as in Oregon so it was not
local. Maybe there were spaceships flying overhead.

Re: [Elecraft] the net

2013-06-10 Thread kevinr
I agree with Phil - propagation has not been helpful lately. The second
problem we have had is the loss of N0SS in the middle of the country.
Tom would call for check ins after I had run through a few stronger
stations. Then, if possible, he would pass net control to the East
Coast. My reach on twenty meters, like Phil's, starts in Wyoming and
thence to Michigan. Colorado is on again off again as is Texas.
However, ECN is very close to WAS lacking only Delaware. Check ins from
as far as Hungary, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia are in the
log. Japan and Russia are also in there. Even though we are somewhere
in the middle of this solar cycle propagation does not mirror this.

Once again: I would dearly love to have an alternate net control in the
Midwest and one on the East Coast. I, too, need a look back at my area
on the West Coast to glean all the check ins from those areas too close
to me. I have worked a few local stations via ground wave. But when
you don't have a straight shot at me the signal must bounce off the not
always reliable ionosphere. I can get folks south and east of San
Francisco but only when the propagation is correct. I can also work
into Texas on both twenty and forty meters. Florida occasionally with
Georgia slightly more often. Since I can only work those I hear I am
stuck with certain patterns of contacts reflected in my years of reports.

We really miss Tom Hammond, N0SS. I know no one can replace him but I
am sure he would like someone to try. The skill level required is not
very high. There is a speed limit on the net control, set by Tom (of
course), of 21 wpm. Folks reply at their comfortable speed and I try to
adjust. I am sure there is someone in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa,
Missouri, Arkansas, or Louisiana who could help. You will get the very
same pay as Tom; once you prove yourself of course :) And there will be
a lot of very happy people who are able to check in with their Elecraft
(or other) rigs. While we do exchange weather reports we try to give
accurate signal reports with readings of strength, variability, and
noise level. If you want to talk about camping, birding, hiking,
canoeing, etc. please do so. Just because they call me net control does
not mean I have control over much of anything :) The position is very
casual so if you feel like trying please do. If you want to start
regional nets please do that too. The main thing is to enjoy yourselves.

Kevin. KD5ONS Net Control Operator 5th Class

Well, I can't speak much about propagation with the CW nets; but I can talk
about the SSB net on Sunday at 1800z. I am net control from western Oregon,
about 100 miles south of Kevin. From my QTH, it is hard to work on 20 meters
from northern California up through Washington. Southern California and Alaska
is fine. I see the same thing in SOTA hamming. It is just too close for 20m
(I have the same problem with Idaho). I seem to do fine on 20m from the Rocky
Mountains east to the Atlantic. New England generally is good. Sometimes my
signal back east is not as strong as on other times. I use the K3/KPA500 to a
2 el cubical quad at 75'. When I don't hear a station well enough, John, N6JW
in Riverside, CA usually can get them. We typically use one or two stations
back east who seem strong to me (often Jim, W4RKS, in AL) to look for west
coast or other stations that John or I can't get as well.

If you are outside of that 500 mile circle from the net control, you should
usually get through. If it is always hard to get heard, take a look at your
antenna or terrain - or? The K2/3/X3 receivers are great for pulling in the
weak ones! Keep in mind that we are not in the best of propagation times.

Phil, NS7P

That's been my experience here in west suburban Chicago, Richard.

Every couple of weeks I listen for the CW nets. On a few occasions I’ve been
able to hear the NCS signal in the noise but not well enough for any kind of
sustained copy. It's also rare that I can copy the stations checking one.
Every now and then, one of them is a little ways above the noise but not by
much.

Maybe there could be a Western Elecraft net and an Eastern or Midwestern
Elecraft net.
