I know there are over 600 happy K3 owners out there now. So would it be asking too much for a shipping status update that we were supposed to see 2 days ago? Re: [Elecraft] SHIPPING STATUS UPDATE
Story of my life Don...just above the noise. :-) The update was due this past Tuesday. That's when the last one ran out, date wise. I ordered Oct. 13. I figure I'll get mine sometime in April. But I, like others in the recent past, would like to see those updates on a regular basis as the dates get closer to me. Five months ago I could have cared less and resided myself to the fact that I would get a K3 some day. Now I am getting ants in my pants. Larry, we may be in the next update, but if my luck holds out it will be the one after that. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Board Flex
Probably not harmful, but it just seems that it would not look first rate in a first rate rig. How much of a pain could it be to have a fix for this by providing something as simple as what Doug has done. Maybe in future boards there could be a hole placed in the FP board to match the one in the frame, and a non-conducting standoff and a couple of screws could be added to the kit. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rev C +AF filter
Sorry, my posts have been going to individuals instead of the reflector. I have tinnitus in both ears and less high frequency noise is a good thing for me. I can see where the younger guys, and some older ones that still have good hearing, are not bothered by the K3 audio. The Heil headset does seem to make an improvement...or maybe it's just that all of the other noises (room etc.) go away and it makes listening to the K3 much better because you can turn down the AF gain some. I'll have to admit that I have not attempted adjustment to the equalizers or messed with the AGC adjustments that some have mentioned. I am in the process of getting SN/0690 up-to-date with the mods that are listed on Elecrafts site, and also have ordered the upgraded DSP board. Once the hardware FW are up to date I'll start digging in the new manual and see if I can make my listening experience better. This is a good thread and I'm listening. The higher SN radio definitely has more bass. In fact I have noted a few times, just how low it goes. It seemed very unusual for a communications radio to do that. So I listened to the older one and it has less bass, but to be honest, I don't see a problem with it. It sounds just fine to me. Now if it was my stereo FM receiver I would heave it out, but I chase DX with it and see no big reason to update it. I guess it is a personal decision for folks. I am using a Heil headset to make the comparison. I am almost 65 years old and my hearing is hosed on the high end. I am not sure if it is from the several decades of weak signal work, or having way too much fun in the 60's, but my upper limit is now a bit over 6 or 8 kHz. I tune in CW at about 450-500 Hz. The 'filter' mentioned is not a peak or null filter, but just a lowpass filter to remove some very high-pitched DSP artifacts that bother some operators. In my opinion, this replacement board is not something that everyone needs. I will probably order the filter sub-board by itself when it becomes available even though I'm probably too old to hear the DSP artifacts in question, but don't intend to bother with replacing the DSP board. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio filter board
If you will go to the mods kits section for the K3 on Elecraft's website, the description of the upgraded DSP REV C board describes exactly what changes it has. Someone actually posted it here on the reflector earlier for all to read. It is pretty clear to me, but YES, the low frequency response mod has been added which means that it does have a low frequency bandpass filter for the audio chain on the DSP board. At least that is what I interpreted it to say. I hope I haven't mis-spoken. Re: [Elecraft] Noisy K3 receiver
You guys may be exceptions to the rule. The # of complaints seem to far outweigh what you two guys are saying. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that it seems that a lot of people are hearing a problem. I have SN/0690 and to my ears it has always been on the noisy side. Some of this may be due to ignorance about how to set up the K3 properly. I am pretty sure that is true on my end, in part. I have never tried to dig deep enough in the manual or the menus to try and make the situation any better. It is a little intimidating to me and that is why I have never dug too deep in to the menus to try and make things better. I hope to change all this in the near future. I am catching up on the mods and upgrades and with an updated manual I hope to have some success in making my K3 sound better to MY ears. Ed, I most definitely have never felt like that my K3 was TOO quiet. Lots of background static and hash that is fatiguing to listen to. I don't know what else to say...I know I am not imagining it. I would much wrather listen to my TS-830s, but I have hung in there with the K3 knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The most distinguishing characteristic of the K3 (for me) is how quiet it is when you slip on the headphones. The K3 is distinctively quiet compared all the Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood radios I own or have operated. I now realize that all the pre-K3 radios I've used were somehow amplifying or emphasizing the band noise, plus adding a bunch of digital artifacts, in the audio. I am completely stunned by the posts here that report noisy K3 receiver and escaping to a quieter Japanese radio. I've been using K3s 11 and 17 ever since the field test units first came out. I've kept current with all the updates and mods so despite the early serial numbers, these radios are equivalent to what is currently shipping. I always have the latest field test firmware in both radios. This is pre-Beta and pre-production firmware that has never interfered with my use of the radio. I use the radios primarily for CW, RTTY and (rarely) SSB contesting, plus a bit of DXing. It took me a full month of using the K3 to finally accept the fact that its receiver is so incredibly quiet compared to any other radio. I thought something was wrong! And yet with the greatly reduced band noise in the headphones, extremely weak signal are easy to copy. 80 and 160 are like new bands, more like the higher bands, with my K3s. And the pile-up/crowded band receive capability is far superior to any radio I've ever operated. I'm not doubting the reports here on the reflector about noisy K3 receiver, but I have to say that either the specific radio has a major defect or the various gain and AGC controls are not setup correctly. W4ZV has posted on this reflector several excellent explanations on how to properly adjust the K3, or any radio for that matter. I would love to hear one of these noisy K3 receivers and see how they are configured. I find no actual description of what the K3DSPUPGD (REV C) consists of. Does it include the lowpass audio filter that everyone keeps talking about, or is that an additional add on to the REV C DSP board? Could someone from Elecraft please straighten me out on this so I can determine if there is something additional I need to order for the REV C DSP upgrade board? I received my KRX3 earlier this year (I think), but I am just now installing it. I have a question about the TMP cable sockets on the KRX3 board. When the sheilded enclosure is installed it touches these connectors. Is this ok, or should these connectors be isolated from the shield? Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 roofing filter matching for diversity receive
H... Ed, I almost tried using the built in translator in Outlook...but then I recognized some of those words, like is and the. :-() It almost let the smoke out of my head. Seriously though, I don't understand the filter setup technicalities. I can get through setting them up per the defaults in the manual, but I would like to understand more about what you said. I'm not sure why a filter would be advertised as a 250hz filter but actually have a (usable?) bandwidth of 370hz. Is this just a difference in how it's measured? I have SN/0690 and am just now installing the KRX3. It arrived a few months after the radio, back in mid to late 08, and I just never got around to installing it. I have identical filters in both the main and sub receiver (13khz, 6khz, 2.8 400 respecitively, with # 5 empty) so I can try out diversity receive. I don't do much CW so didn't figure I needed a 250hz. I'm sure I'll be asking some questions about this in short order, once I get the rig back together. I am doing some of the mods and am currently waiting on some parts and the REV C or D (or whatever it's up to now) DSP board. Stan Rife W5EWA -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ed Muns Roofing filters are selected by either of two ways. One is by directly selecting FLx on the K3 front panel. The other is by changing the DSP bandwidth via WIDTH, LO CUT or HIGH CUT. When the DSP bandwidth is decreased to the crystal filter bandwidth, then that roofer is selected. (Or, when the DSP increases beyond the current roofer's bandwidth, then the next wider roofer is selected.) It is important to note that the roofer bandwidth is specified by the user in the K3 CONFIG menu, and you are not constrained to use either the marketing bandwidth or the actual bandwidth of the filter. You can put in any bandwidth you want because all you are doing is telling the K3 what DSP bandwidth to engage that particular crystal filter. Most users specify the marketing bandwidth of the filter, e.g., 250 Hz for the 250 Hz 8-pole filter. So, as you decrease the DSP bandwidth and reach 250 Hz, that crystal filter will engage. (Or, if you select FLx, then crystal filter 'x' is selected and the DSP bandwidth is set to 250 Hz.) But you can specify 350 Hz, which is actually rational since the real bandwidth of this filter is 370 Hz. Some people even specify a wider DSP bandwidth engagement point such as 400 or 450 Hz, because they want their crystal filter bandwidth INSIDE the DSP bandwidth. So, think about the relationship of the two filters (crystal and DSP), the resultant cascade bandwidth of the two, the shape factor of the two filters, and the passband shape. Decide the DSP bandwidth at which you want your particular crystal filters to engage. There are arguments for keeping the roofer wider than the DSP at all times and vice versa. Remember that when the DSP bandwidth is near the roofer's actual bandwidth, the cascade bandwidth will be significantly less. When one is much narrower than the other then the narrow bandwidth dominates the IF bandwidth, but other RX characteristics like IMD performance will be determined by the roofer bandwidth. Setting the DSP engagement bandwidths for your crystal filters affects both the resultant IF passband width, shape and sound of the audio, as well as the RX performance characteristics such as IMD. If your head hurts thinking about all this, just specify the bandwidth number in the part number of the filter! That is a good default and the radio will work great. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 roofing filter matching for diversity receive
So is the information in the manual just the easy way to set it up, and you can actually put them in whatever slots you want? From reading the manual I understood that they had to be in decending order starting from FL1, and the filters in both receivers had to match for diversity receive. You can put your widest filter in FL1 and install them from there in descending bandwidth. Use the K3 utility to set up the filters, much easier than doing it with the config menu. The radio automatically switches in the matching filter that matches WIDTH going down. This will be done separately in each RX regardless of what filter slots were used. You do not have to make slot assignments identical. 73, Guy. On Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 3:57 PM, bill4...@comcast.net wrote: Hi folks, Im trying to configure the K3 receiver for diversity receive. Im populating the roofing filter slots in both receivers with matched filters, and the question came up: When the K3 automatically selects the correct roofing filter to match DSP filter bandwidth, does the K3 do this by filter bandwidth, or by FLx number? In other words; when I use the width control, and decrease DSP bandwidth from 3.0 Khz to 2.0 Khz on the front panel, the K3 switches from the 2.8 Khz roofing filter located in FL3 to the 2.1 Khz roofing filter located in FL4. With the sub-receiver on, and in diversity receive, does the K3 switch the sub-receiver roofing filter from FL3 to FL4, like the main, or is it smart enough to know that my sub-receiver has its 2.8, and 2.1 Khz roofing filters in FL1 and FL2 respectively? Does the K3 select the correct roofing filter by bandwidth, or by FLx number? Is the selection logic the same for main and sub-receiver? The KRX3 manual is a little foggy on this. It says you have to have at least one roofing filter, and if that happens to be the KFL3B FM filter, it MUST be in the FL1 location. It also says that you must have the widest bandwidth nearest FL1, but does not say it must be located at FL1. Not a shortfall on Elecrafts end. They designed it that way. Consumers have driven some of the changes that have been made, like this one. If Elecraft gets enough feedback on a certain item, then they redesign to address the wants and needs of the consumer. Re: [Elecraft] securing K2 RF board
I used the Panavise circuit board holder (large) even after installing the 2D connectors. Just adjust it for a light hold and it will stay in the vise ok. Even some of the components mounted REALLY close to the edge of the board had the same affect as the 2D connectors, as far as using the Panavise. Just have to adjust the clamping action to hold it lightly but securely. The springs in the jaws will allow the jaws to hold on to the board out at the end of the jaw, while touching the 2D connectors at the other end. Don I don't know how you did it without some kind of a vise. But I guess everybody has their own technique. Personally I like all the conveniences and gadgets that are available for this kind of work. The K2 was my first major assembly project. I had never done anything nearly that complex before. Not bragging but everything checked out ok the first time everytime, and I did it in about 6 days if I remember correctly. Of course that was 12 or so hours a day not counting the breaks that I had to take. I had a weeks vacation scheduled just for building the K2. That's probably not a major feat for some of the guys that built K2s, but it was a personal first and best for me as a rank beginner. I used the Elecraft-supplied BNC(F) to TMP(M) cable to feed the sub-receiver's input. This arrangement is essentially permanent unless one does a partial dis-assembly to gain access the sub-receiver's input jack. I later decided that I'd like more flexibility regarding the choice of antenna for the sub-receiver. I now route the cable from the BNC(F) to the area atop the sub-receiver and secure it to the knurled nut on the top of the sub-receiver. I also routed the cable from the antenna tuner to the same area and secured it along with the end of the cable from the rear panel BNC(F). Next I made up a short (6) TMP(M) to TMP(F) cable that plugs -permanently- into the sub-receiver's input. This short cable is also routed to the same area as the ends of the other two cables. Now, by lifting the top cover of the rig, I can choose which source is fed to the sub-receiver's input via the short extension cable. It's -much- easier to gain access to the sub-receiver's antenna jack if the KI03 is removed. It's easy to damage the input jack on the sub-receiver if you try to plug a cable into the jack from above. 73! Re: [Elecraft] [K2] how much harder to build: K2 vs K1?
Hi LS. I have never built a K1, but I would guess that a K2 is 2 or 3 times the complexity of a K1. But don't let that scare you. The instructions for assembly are superb and the Elecraft support is as well. The K2 was my first major project and I just followed the assembly manual to the T and everything worked as specified. You will have some questions along the way, but Don Wilhelm and a host of others here on the reflector will help you out. Ordering the torroids pre-wound will will speed up the proces quite a bit and is not all that expensive. Hi all, I'm considering building a K2, but here's my situation. I'd be a first-time kit builder, I've never had the opportunity to build and the K2 looks like it'd be great fun and a great learning experience. The K1 sounds like it's the better choice for a first-time build, but the K2 matches what I need in a radio a lot better. So I guess my general question is, how much harder would a K2 be to build over a K1? I.e. what are the gotchas with the K2 for a novice builder that aren't in a K1? I know this is kind of vague, but that's the only way I can think of to ask the question. I think I'd still do OK if I took my time and got good tools (I just ordered the recommended weller soldering station). [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 install
I've just finished installing a KRX3 with the KBPF3 and when I push the sub button it tells me NO SUB. I have been through the menus several times, setting up the filters and modes and bandwidths for the main and the sub receiver but I still get the same error when I try to select the sub receiver. I have also selected the KBPF3 for the sub receiver, but it doesn't ask me about setting up the KBPF3 for the sub. I assumed you would have to tell it when to use the KBPF3 as with the other filters. Maybe this is done automatically when going outside the amateur bands. I seem to recall something about this. I'm sure I have missed something. Can someone help? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 install
I've sent a bunch of replies and they all went to the individuals instead of going to the reflector. Sorry about that folks. Yes, the power cycle did fix part of my problem. I could then see the SUB come on. I also encountered an ERR PL2 error code. I had to go in and re-calibrate the VCO for the sub receiver. I had somehow messed that up. Whenever I pressed the ATU TUNE button I would get an ERR TXF error. Looked that up and figured out that I was transmitting on the wrong bandwidth for CW. There is an awful lot to do when setting up 10 filters for the K3 and the SUB receiver. I finally got it all correct I think, but I still had no audio for the SUB receiver. After reading the instructions I realized that I had to set the number of speakers to ONE, and then I had audio as well as receive signal from the SUB receiver. I need to get some stereo speakers. I have more reading to do. [Elecraft] K3BSR
I installed and was trying to setup Don's program. Got it going and it seems to work ok but there seems to be an issue with the receiver audio going deaf while tuning rapidly with the VFO. My question is, this is the day after and I have turned on the K3 and A B VFOs are on the same frequency and are tuning together with the right most decimal point in the B VFO flashing. How do I get it out of this mode? I've tried split but it doesn't seem to be in split mode. The VFOs are locked together somehow. I can tune the B VFO independantly but the main dial tunes both. YES! That is exactly the question I would like to ask. I very much looked forward to the release a couple of years ago, and now you can't even get a comment from Elecraft about the situation. IMO, QRO is much more important than all these trivial little toys they are building now. I have a much more pressing need for a KPA- than I do a panadapter (with limited features) and a wattmeter. I have a very nice panadapter that has rig control from the computer, and it didn't cost 700 bucks, and I can control it with the MOUSE. Wayne/Eric, how about some comments on this subject. To be inovative, they could make it a full kit, or some assembly required like the K3. I think a full kit would be a little daunting for most of us, so the 2nd option would be better. It/they have a lot of wiz-bang automatic control and proably a lot of surface mount circuitry. It has a built in tuner and I thought that was pretty inovative. Apparently someone thinks it is cost effective. What would you need 100% duty cycle at 1500 watts for anyway? We don't have broadcast licences. I don't think Elecraft was trying to achieve that anyway. http://www.steppir.com/SteppirSPE.html This is the 1K model. SteppIR is just the dealer. It's only rated for 5 minutes at half power. That's probably enough for a digital QSO. SPE's website says they have a 2K model that puts out double the power of the 1K. Check the prices of the mosfets and power supply needed, and it will become obvious. Apha has the RD money, but they haven't done a SS 1.5KW amp, because it isn't cost effective. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps
I wouldn't give up my old SB-200, but I would MOST CERTAINLY buy an Elecraft amplifier should they choose to continue down the path to production. I think they only need to build one amp at this time though, say in the 800 to 1000 watt range. And I don't think it needs to be 100% duty cycle, but certainly something that would support digital modes for several minutes (8 to 10)at half power, or maybe full power. An 8 minute transmit time on digital is a long transmission. I'm no amp expert for sure, but this would seem like an adequate duty cycle. I don't think they need to design another Alpha amp that some of us can't afford. I was going to be quite happy with the KPA-800 for around 3500 bucks (I believe), and it was all automatic with a tuner. As someone stated, making it a modular kit like the K3 is a very good idea. That way you can buy the basic amp and then add accessories as you can afford them (automatic rig following, tuner, built in wattmeter, etc.). Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps
Doesn't have to be legal limit. Seems everyone is expressing something in the less than 1000 watt category. What ever Elecraft comes out with in this venue is going to be acceptable price wise because of their superior marketing skill. The KPA-800 with all the bells and whistles was priced at around 3500 if memory serves me correctly. I'd pay that for a full featured 800 watt out amp. I think the modular approach is a better idea. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps
Read the previous posts from a year and a half ago. The KPA-1500 was priced at around 4500 bucks. And I am sure there is a limited market for that, but look at how many Ameritron amps are sold, the SS series, I have replaced finals in many of the ALS series amps. there is nothing special or exotic about those amps, making a kit that used the same type finals, was truly breakin capable, had proper cooling, and in a same size matching cabinet as the K3 would not be difficult at all. I do not see any problem for any one who can assemble a K2 to build an amp kit, it would be much easier. And sales would be 10 times more than a 1.5 KW amp at the higher price. Cover 160 to 6 meters. I would be interested in one just for a driver for my homebrew amps. the K3 at 100 watts in insufficient, so I use an Alpha 99 with the K3, and it works QSK etc fine. Close match to the K3 also, black with white labels. My only suggestion to Elecraft is to not leak any new products until they are very close to release, outsiders and some insiders are getting the opinion that if a product is announced you can figure a year to 1 1/2 years before you can actually own it. Not a real good reputation. May work for a product like the K3 one time, but repeats on delays will kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Merv KH7C As Paul said Personally, I'd love a small (500w or 600w) solid-state amplifier kit that I can build myself (a *real* kit, with soldering iron and everything!). Amen! A kit with soldering would keep the cost down and give us K3 folks something to make smoke with! My vote is yes for small solid state kit.
