[Fink-users] doxygen-1.3.2-1 failed to build

2003-07-16 Thread Kow K
I had an error in building doxygen-1.3.2-1. A snippet of its out is
attached.

My Fink version:

Package manager version: 0.13.3
Distribution version: 0.5.3.cvs
I'm running 10.2.6 on PowerBook G4, 867MHz. I don't have the recent
Developer Tools update installed.

Thanks,

Kow

Re: [Fink-users] python and tkinter...

2003-07-14 Thread Kow K
Tkinter comes with all Python distributions by default since 1.5 or so.
So, just try to import it by doing:

from Tkinter import *

or

import Tkinter

if you don't like namespace pollution.

REMARK: Tkinter is configured for X Window System only, not for Aqua.
Actually, there's no Tkinter for Aqua available for pre-2.3 versions of
Python, AFAIK. For Python 2.3a1 or higher, there is.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Fink-users] emacs speaks statistics
I was wondering whether anyone has any experience with installing the
emacs speaks statistics (ESS) package for a fink installed emacs - i.e.
what changes to the makefile were needed to get the installation to
work with the /sw directory structure.
I only needed to add the following lines to my ~/.emacs file.

;; ess (emacs-speak-statistics)
(load /Users/MyHomeDirectory/ess-5.1.24/lisp/ess-site)
I hope this helps.

No, I don't have that. Weird.

In fact, it is recommended that you do _not_ update to gcc 3.3.

I can imagine that if I throw away everything related to postgresql

Is that true? Can I go and remove everything??

Here's the error message I get in the python interpreter.

8.3 and 8.4 of tcltk
Yeah, it appears that sometime recently, tclConfig.sh started creating
dylib files instead of .so files.

The postgresql makefile hacks I made basically decide whether to make
a dylib or bundle depending on the file extension (easiest way to do
it without rewriting large bits of their make system :P)

So now that it's making a dylib, it's not adding undefined suppress
and flat_namespace.

I'll have to figure out how to make it play nicely. The problem is it
appears most of the settings in the postgresql makefile don't do
anything, because tclConfig.sh has it's own link line that doesn't end
up including postgresql's flags.

[Fink-users] successful build of arts-1.1.1-1, qt3-3.1.2-1, and kdelibs3-ssl-3.1.1-2

2003-03-31 Thread Kow K
Great! KDE-related stuff in the subject have built successfully after a
few minor problems with dependency. I had been updating, step by step,
qt3, arts, and kdelibs3 in this order. To complete this update, I'm
building kdebase3-ssl-3.1.1-2 with its shlibs and dev packages now.
I'll let you know if this build ends successfully.

Thank you, Benjamin!

Until the last selfupdate-cvs a few minuties ago, kdebase3-ssl

[Fink-users] daunted by ghostscript6

2003-02-09 Thread Kow K
Dear Fink users,

I need you help. I'm really stuck. I'm on 0.5.1.cvs, 0.11.2, running on
10.2.3

THE PROBLEM:

All update processes are being blocked a puzzling missing version
error related to ghostscript6. For example, when I try to update
kdebase3, among others, it fails due to dpkg parse error, as the
following:

$ fink update kdebase3
sudo /sw/bin/fink update kdebase3
Information about 2162 packages read in 3 seconds.

The following package will be installed or updated:
 kdebase3

The offending lines in are:

This problems happens every time I try update something. I tried fink
scanpackages, fink index, to no avail.

FYI, fink list ghost gives the following, which indicates that
ghostscript6 isn't installed (or incomplete):

Re: [Fink-users] daunted by ghostscript6

2003-02-09 Thread Kow K
I solved the problem by myself, by brute force: I manually removed the
following offending lines from the /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status, and it
worked like a charm.

The offending lines in are:

Package: ghostscript6
Status: purge ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: text

I'm wondering how this could happen. I can only guess it is related to
a Terminal crash during a previous update process ...

I also wonder if there isn't other smarter and more peaceful way to
solve it.

Cheers,
Kow

All kidding aside, I can't imagine you should need to rebuild. You
didn't change X11's did you?

No, I'm on XDarwin. FYI, I had exactly the same behavior once before on
ssl-enabled version of KDE. At that time, it was fixed after replacing
it by non-ssl version and replacing threaded X by non-threaded one.

kdebase3, kdebase3-shlibs from the most recent KDE 3.1 release seem to

Some bits of KDE want doxygen to generate docs, so it's been added as
a build dependency.

If you were to wait until the latest packages made it into stable and
binaries were created, it wouldn't be a runtime dependency, it's only
needed at build time.

which means that I can remove tetex later if I want to without breaking
dependencies? If it is the case, there's no problem.

Did you get this during an update-all? It's possible that something
ended up installing libpng and it didn't undo it when it was time to
build kdelibs3.

Yes, it is a result of update-all session, though I updatated qt3
beforehand.

Likely starting again will fix it (this is part of the pains of the
libpng - libpng3 change, I guess)

Alright. I'll give it another shot.

I really need the Java plug-in for some work I'm doing.

Subject: I have a dilemma in colors ...

Hi,

I'm reporting a problem with interchangeability between X11 and
XDarwin. If this is a known problem, please discard it. I tried to see
if it is the case on the list archive, but it turned out that keyword
search wasn't functional and I gave up my attempt.

I'm running 10.2.3 on PowerBook G3 Series 256MHz. On my system, I have
XDarwin and X11 installed. XDarwin is installed via Fink. I performed
a hack suggested by Mechèle Geroche to get both to work on the same
system. (Thanks, Michèle ;-))

But it turnd out today that there is a problem with this setting that
probably evidences a piece of incompatitbility between the two
systems. The symptom is this:

1.	On X11, many apps crash in thousands of colors mode for monitor

2.	In millions mode, though, XDarwin (rooted mode) crashes when I

Again, the question: What's a 'segmentation fault'? And is there a way
around it?

You've got an answer from Mono Toy. So, I won't repeat it.

This happens to me enough that I suspect that some others are also
seeing
these.

Without specific information, I'm guessing that the set of problems
you're experiencing are caused by:

1)	older version of packages
2)	mixture of programs built against threaded and unthreaded
	version of X Window libraries

As for 2, X11 from Apple is more susceptible to it than XDarwin,
because it is not thread-safe.

Even if you use the same program, or more exactly the same code, the
resulting binaries built on Linux and Mac OS are very likely to be
different in nontrivial ways. So, if problems of this sort arises, the
most likely source of problems is in your environment, specifically X
Window libraries, in your case.

Check out if your environment is reasonablly updated. If not, updated
it *after* bakcing up all of your crucial stuff and data. This is
specifically recommended to researchers who tend to rely heavily on
their data.

If you have further questions, feel free to ask them, with enough
detail provided with them.

Hope this helps

If I then try it again (without removing qt3-shlibs), fink wants to install qt-x11-free-3.0.5. What is this package, I don't see it in the package list (FC). I am not sure if I need it, because I have Apple's X11 and system-xfree-4.2-5 installed.

Yes, but then if you run selfupdate-cvs, Fink redeselect autoconf2.5

What should I do exactly? I have a bunch of packages to update since

And why is IE not working on it? Because M$ doesn't honor any products

Re: [Fink-users] Apple X11 vs. Fink X11

2003-01-15 Thread Kow K
Apple's X11:

Advantage: released by Apple
Disadvantage:	released by Apple

Joking aside, Apple's X11 is a beta release, and hosts a lot of bugs
and problems, in particular those related to international key layout,
though it is claimed to run faster than XDarwin (due to QuartzExtreme
and OpenGL support?, but in my place, the effect is hardly noticeable,
partly because my machine, PowerBook G3 256MHz is pretty old and slow,
perhaps.)

XDarwin is way stable and reliable and free from most bugs and problems
that daunts X11 now, though it can be slower than Apple's X11.

My suggestion: X11 is hardly recommended unless if you, as an open
source developer, prefer fun of experimentation with it to stability
and reliability.

Cheers,
Kow

1) I have WindowMaker running with Apple's X11, but I cannot right
click and get wmaker's Application Menu. Everything else in wmaker
seems to work fine. Has anyone else had this problem since they
switched to Apple's X11? X11's Application Menu works just fine, but
there are quite a few more things on the wmaker Application Menu
besides applications. My .xintrc file has the following:

source /sw/bin/init.sh
exec wmaker

On X11, WindowMaker crashes as soon as I touch on the bar. So, I can't
help with this.

2) I tried to set up bash. I downloaded Fink's bash package and
installed it. I then followed the directions in the README file for
setting up config files, but I can not get the Terminal app to change
to bash.

So, do you want to get bash to be your login shell, right? If so, the
rigth way to go is edit your user profile with NetInfo Manger. OS X is
very different on this shell setup.

Caveat: any modification to NetInfo can be UTTERLY FATAL. There is a
great risk to screw up your system instantly. Beware.

Also, I can not get chsh to work from the command line either in
Terminal.app or in xterm or rxvt when running the X11 server.

What do you mean? You can't get it to work even by typing csh?

I tried changing the Terminal preferences from executing the
/usr/bin/login to /sw/bin/bash or /sw/bin/init.sh, but neither did
anything but hang the Terminal.app.

Are you on 10.2.x? or 10.1.x? On 10.2.x, you have /bin/bash, /bin/zsh,
/bin/csh = /bin/tcsh, and set your Preference to /bin/bash, etc. (But
it seems you need to hit return in the entry of path-to-shell to get
Terminal to recognize the change you made.)

The current version of xfree86-base is 4.2.1.1-4. So, you'll need to update fink with "fink selfupdate" or "fink selfupdate-cvs" if you're accessing CVS tree.

If you want to Apple's X11, follow instructions on Fink web page carefully. In particular, you need to install BOTH Users AND SKD packages.

Apple's X11 is a public beta, and unfortunatley it's suffering from a number of problems that XDarwin has already solved, especially keymapping problems with international keyboards. If you value stability and predictability more than performance -- yes, it runs very fast, with OpenGL, Quartz Extreme support --, XDarwin would be a better choice.

Hope this helps.

With SDK and User packages, system-xfree86-4.2-3 installed, I'm testing

I'm having odd things:

1.	/usr/X11R6/etc disappeared
2.	Fonts of KDE apps get jaggy
3.	KDE 3.1 apps (Konqueror, Konsole) can't be used. They sure launch,
but as soon as I touch their menus, they quit. (and I get
	Xquartz.crash.log from Console)

Is anybody else suffering this?

I changed window mangers, to no avail.

Thanks,

Is that related to this issue?

fink install xfree86-base-threaded
fink install xfree86-rootless-threaded

cp /usr/X11R6_bak/lib/libapplexp.1.0.dylib /usr/X11R6/lib

For sure, I also added the following symlinks:

	/usr/X11R6/lib/libapplexp.dylib -- /usr/X11R6/lib/libapplexp.1.0.dylib
	/usr/X11R6/lib/libapplexp.1.0dylib --
/usr/X11R6/lib/libapplexp.1.0.dylib

Apple's X11 should fire up just fine. If you use a .xinitrc, use
Apple's
window manager quartz-wm, like this on the last line:

exec quartz-wm

It works for me quite well. You end up with a threaded X windows
install
with apple's X11.

In my case, I wanted to go back to XDarwin, and replaced quartz-wm with
wmaker. Note: quartz-wm doesn't run on XDarwin.

PKG files are just funky 'bundles'.

Mount the DMG, and open a terminal window.

'cd' into /Volumes/X11\ User*/ to get into the mounted volume.

Then cd X11UserForMacOSX.mkpkg/Contents/Resources

In that directory you can see 'ReadMe.rtf'.

That should be the read-me file: you should be able to open and
read it with the TextEdit application.

Thanks for your info. I appreciate it. But it's a quite avoidable
round-about. I would like to dispense with Terminal to do this tiny
job. Why couldn't they just put another copy of README.rtf next to the
X11UserForMacOSX.mpkg? That shouldn't be really hard.

I don't think this kind of round-aboutness is conforming to the
user-friendliness that Apple's been always advertising for.

Sure it is, If I no longer want a package, why would I want its config
file?

Well, it kind of depends on your situation. Sure, it makes sense if
it's an option you can choose, but if no, it'll be more annoying that
useful. Many .xxx directories contain configuration files and it would
be pretty annoying if removal of a package always deleted it.

Anyway, if you don't have the package XXX running on your system, you
can safely delete .XXX directory with rm -rf XXX.

Figured it out. This is caused by the ccp4 pacakge. It sets something
bad in its profile.d scripts. Not sure what, exactly, it would be good
if the maintainer could figure out what variable breaks fink.

This was done in cooperation with the XFree86 project. The xonx
project has, as far as I know, long-since been folded back into
XFree86 and Torrey Lyons is an XFree86 project developer.

As far as what's this? is concerned, I suggest you read the README
provided in the distribution - it covers everything which was added.
The fink-installed packages should also work just fine.

Should I install this (if the link ever becomes active) in lieu of
XDarwin.app? Will my fink-installed packages work in Apple's X11?

This is all too bizarre. Didn't see this coming AT ALL!

Or do I need to install a second copy of Mozilla with Fink?
And if I do that where does the fink installed Mozilla keep its config

Will it interfere with the aqua version?

But I have two Mozillas on my system, one on Aqua, the other on X

half year ago.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, it is!

(But I personally won't be so surprised even if Apple started something

Is this related somehow to the Apple/GNU Darwin break up that was

All in all, this is werid, to put it mildly.

Yes, it should be really cool if it works. I have a bit of worry,
though. I hope Apple doesn't force users to stick to Aqua GUI ...

GNU-Darwin != Apple's darwin.

GNU-Darwin is a fork of Apple's darwin, and is in no way related to
darwin or opendarwin, except for having the same ancestral codebase.

That's confusing enough ...

[Fink-users] Successful build of qt3-3.1.1-3

2003-01-05 Thread Kow K
Yes, qt3-3.1.1-3 compiled on my machine successfully at last. A lot of
thanks to Ben.

Now, I'm trying to install kdebase3 and related packages. I will report
its result soon.

BTW, the Terminal crashed during qt3 compilation. This happened three
times in total, once in -2, twice in -3. But in the last one, the build
finished in the background. Seems like it's reproducible. A bug of
Terminal or what?

Right, the -3 package fixes this problem. This was a different bug
than the one that was happening before. That's fixed now, along with
the problems building against xfree86 cvs snapshots.

I've no experience of Terminal crashing, so I'm afraid I can't help
you there. However, as a general rule, if an application crashes for
whatever reason, the responsibility lies with the authors thereof. I
think you should let Apple know.

Yeah, I will, jut to make them busier. ;-)

But the problem is a bit subtle. I had one more crash during a
compilation in rxvt in X Window, though I'm not really sure if this is
the same.

Do you have a crash log available?

Where can I look for it?

try:
fink info ccache

If you install this (together with ccache-default), it will be much
less of a problem that the build starts from scratch each time you do
another attempt to fink install/upgrade a buggy package/from a faulty
Terminal. Of course, all the configuring and makefile building etc.
still goes on, but the compilation usually is the bulk of the build.

, COOL!. Thanks!!

BTW, wouldn't it nice if this is installed by default for CVS access?

depend on themselves):

Errata for my previous post:

If you decide on (1), you may need to do sudo dpkg -r
--ignore-depends= kdebase3-ssl

sudo dpkg -r --force-depends kdebase3-ssl is the correct one.

Sorry about potential confusion.

You all seem to have the ssl flavor installed and are now trying to
install the packages without ssl.

Yeah, this is funny.

Why this is so, I don't know. Did you just fink update-all?

Yes, exactly.

If you really want to do this switch, you have at least to fink
remove bundle-kde-ssl and then probably dpkg -r --force-depends
kdelibs3-shlibs-ssl and some others.

If you don't want to switch, fink install kdelibs3-shlibs-ssl or
fink install bundle-kde-ssl.

For the moment, I removed all KDE package with dpkg -r
--force-depends. But I'm not sure which way to go. I'm still
struggling to install qt3. This is giving me a big mess.

Thanks for your advice.

Yup. Here's my tree:

This is a typical problem with Tk-Python version mismatch. What is the
version of your Tk? If it's 8.4.1, not 8.4.3, and if you built your
Pythong package when you were on 8.4.3, which I assume is true, you'll
need to rebuild python package with fink rebuild python and install
it again.

The reason is that a Python module (for GUI) called Tkinter isn't
properly configured for your Tk library.

Hope this helps

You don't happen to have the freetype2 2.0.13 (I think it is?) package
installed, do you?

I removed ssl-versions of KDE packages and tried to non-ssl versions
instead. Then, I got the same error that comes below. As for freetype2
version, my is 2.0.9-1. I'm using Dec 02 Dev Tools on 10.2.3.

Right, the -3 package fixes this problem. This was a different bug
than the one that was happening before. That's fixed now, along with
the problems building against xfree86 cvs snapshots.

I see. Thanks a lot for your hard work!

Sorry! I just realized I didn't run fink selfupdate-cvs before
bulding with the patch build. Please hold the validity of my previous
post for a while. I'm doing it again.

Excellent. Thanks for the help in tracking this down. I've gone
ahead
and put it into unstable.

Anyone else who has had problems with qt3 building, please
selfupdate-cvs and give it another shot. If you still have problems,
*please* let me know.

I feel sorry to discourage you by reporting this, but I still have a
problem with the patches. The following is the error I got. FYI, this
is the same as I had before applying the patches. (Fink 0.5.0a-cvs,
0.11.1 on G3 256, 10.2.3, Dec 02 Dev Tools installed).
