Frame output scales incorrectly - corrupt joboptions file?

2007-03-08 Thread Karen Mardahl

Hi

I have an annoyance, not really a problem, with my Frame 7.1p116 on XP
and Distiller 7.0.7.

My PDF is distilled at 1439% or 1398% or some such random, 4-digit
figure. After several normal print jobs, something cracks, and I get
this mess. Closing down everything and reopening makes the bug go
away.

I am alert to the problem so I view the Print dialog carefully - I
swear! It always says 100% in the scale box. That is why I suspect
Distiller. I feel that I have to assume FM generates a .ps file that
is going to produce output scaled to 100%, and that Distiller chews it
up somehow.

Or...?

Ideas as to the whereabouts of this annoyance? I can go for months
without a sign, but now I had the problem twice in one day. My Acrobat
is 7.0.9, but that cannot possibly be the culprit, can it?

Thanks in advance.

regards, Karen Mardahl

Shmuel,

You wrote:

Is there any way to have a PDF show you where you are in the bookmark pane

Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is no.

Starting with Acrobat/Reader 6, collapsed parent bookmarks are not
displayed differently to indicate that one of their subordinate bookmarks
corresponds to the currently-viewed page.

And even if all bookmarks levels are expanded (not recommended in general),
Acrobat does not automatically scroll the bookmark pane to match the
corresponding page location (as it does with the thumbnails pane).

Re: Table Question (wrapping onto 2nd page)

2007-03-08 Thread rebecca officer
Your first 3 rows are probably heading rows, even if they look like body
rows. Click in one, then look at the info bar at the bottom left to see.
Heading rows automatically repeat. If so, add body rows below your
repeated rows, put the content into them, then delete the repeating
rows.

Greetings all,

I have a table question that I can not seem to resolve (Frame 6.0). I
have a table where the first 3 rows are duplicating themselves on the
next page when the table wraps across a page separator.

Is there a way to remove this wrapping effect, or is this a bug in FM6.0

and I need to make a secondary table for the information flowing onto
the next page?

Thanks for the help,

Re: (1) Numbering issues with anchored frames (2) Changing numbering in a book

2007-03-08 Thread Steve Rickaby
Donna... forgive me for ignoring the rest of your post: I've not had my morning
intravenous caffeine injection yet.

- How bad is it to have 2 chapters in one file? I don't mind to split the
file. I'm asking purely out of curiosity, and I already brace myself for the
outcry this question might provoke.

Much badness. FrameMaker's 'simple' book numbering approach - as opposed to the
more complex methods used prior to Version 5.5 - is based on the $chapnum
variable, and this mandates one chapter per file. Do yourself a favor - split
the chapters.

The only case I can think of where you would not want to use numbering based on
$chapnum and restarting para numbering for each chapter is if you explicitly
needed to carry one or more numbering threads right through a book, or needed
to have a numbering thread that was reset asynchronously with chapters.

Your point (1) was dealt with here recently: check the archives.

(2) Suggest you use $volnum for part numbering.

Last but not least, all these Lists of Š are taking up too much space. The
closest that I could move them together is to start each file on the next
available page. Is it possible to have all the List of Figures, Tables, and
Paragraphs in one file but as three separate lists?

You can set up FrameMaker to start on the next available page. Afaik the only
way to have them all in the same file is to manually combine them after final
book generation - and that will snarf your page numbering unless you are
careful.

On a general point, there are some extremely good white papers about FrameMaker
numbering available from the Mother Ship, www.frameusers.com.

Numbering

2007-03-08 Thread Art Campbell

First, whatever font you're using in your Subject isn't translating well

On 3/5/07, Dona Mommsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi,

(1) This book has a numbering issue with anchored frames.
The numbering setting is to continue the numbering from the previous
paragraph in the book, and it is consistent in the book and in each
document. However, this does not work when the first occurrence of the
paragraph happens to be in an anchored frame. In that case Frame
stubbornly restarts numbering for that paragraph / tag, and it happens
for paragraphs containing any numbering tag. As soon as I enter the
same paragraph format in the flow (somewhere before the anchored frame)
the numbering continues correctly. Any ideas or workarounds?

Anchored frames are outside the main flow. The easiest solution is to
number outside them.

(2) In addition, I'd like to make a number of numbering changes. Maybe
these changes should be done first, because it includes restarting the
numbering in each chapter, which could make the issue detailed above
obsolete. However, I'm not sure if there is any order in which I should
tackle these changes. I'm particularly uncertain if I'm missing
something about numbering definitions of the book vs. numbering in the
paragraph format that could get me in trouble.

— Introducing Parts should be the easy part:
Part I: Chapters 1 to 3
Part II: Chapters 4 to 6
Part III: Chapters 7 to 8
I was planning to create a new paragraph tag and to include that in the
TOC.

Yes. I'd use the $volnum variable and control it in the book file.

— Change the numbering of Figures and Tables to Chapter—Figure or
Chapter—Table, respectively, e.g. Figure1—1. Thus the numbering
restarts in each chapter.
I've done the combined numbering in the Appendix, with a structure of
empty brackets in the auto-numbering format,
e.g. A:A.n+ \t
Should I do the same for the main chapters 1 through 8, or is there
something that I'm missing about the chapter numbering definition of
the book?

Make sure to use a different numbering track, not A: and you should be fine.
You could also set this up at the book level, really the preferred
method, using the $chapnum or $volnum variables instead of your
active counter.

Please note that I have multiple paragraph tags for Figures and Tables,
so there are 2 numbering tags but 5 paragraph tags in total: Figure,
FigureWithSource, TableTitle, TableTitleWithSource, and another
paragraph tag for the Figures that are split into panels. The 'with
source' paragraphs have a different spacing, ruler and 'next paragraph'
property, because they are followed by a paragraph indicating the
source. However, they are using the same numbering tag, so there are
only 2 numbering tags, one for Figures and one for Tables. Also, the
paragraph tag for split Figures with panels numbered 1a), 1b) uses the
same numbering tag. However, these panels are not included in the List
of Figures. The caption for the whole figure that gets into the LOF is
either a paragraph Figure or FigureWithSource.
Again, the goal it to change the numbering to Chapter—Figure or
Chapter—Table, respectively. I guess that I can handle that with the
correct structure in the empty-brackets-approach, where Figure and
FigureWithSource have to use the same item in the list. To get the
'Figures with panels', I'll probably need another item in the
structure. Again, the question is whether there is a better way of
doing this, using the chapter numbering definition in the book? Is it
possible to use a variable definition like $chapnum in the
auto-numbering of a paragraph tag?

Sure, use $chapnum for this -- that's what it's designed for. But it
would only replace the set of brackets you're using for chapter
numbering.

— I'm also grateful for any tips how to make these changes across the
book without FrameScript.

Setting the numbering at the book level and using the $chapnum and
$volnum variables would be the easiest way to do it. If you have to
redo tags, you'd just import the new formats into multiple files at
once, again at the book level.

— How bad is it to have 2 chapters in one file? I don't mind to split
the file. I'm asking purely out of curiosity, and I already brace
myself for the outcry this question might provoke.

It's fairly standard procedure. That's why the numbering properties in
the book file allow you to set the numbering for multiple files to the
same chapter number... It's also one additional reason to use the
$chapnum variable. The file=chapter thing is just human tidiness --
the computer doesn't care.

Last but not least, all these Lists of … are taking up too much space.
The closest that I could move them together is to start each file on
the next available page. Is it possible to have all the List of

RE: Conditions that won't go away - solution(s)

2007-03-08 Thread Martinek, Carla
Summary of the problem and solution:

1. I used a Framescript to change all text tagged with OLDTAG
to being tagged with NEWTAG. No text in any of the files is
tagged with OLDTAG at this time.

2. As the condition OLDTAG still existed in each file, I deleted
that unused condition from each and every file using PGFWhopper
plugin
from CudSpan. OLDTAG does not exist in any of the files any more,
including on the master pages. The OLDTAG condition has been
verified as being deleted from each and every file.

3. If I show/hide conditional text at the individual file level,
NEWTAG is available, and OLDTAG is not, as I expect it to happen.

4. If I show/hide conditional text at the BOOK level, OLDTAG is
available, but NEWTAG is not, which is *not* what I expect to
happen.
NEWTAG should be available at the book level show/hide, and OLDTAG
should not show at all as it has been deleted.

5. I tried saving the book file to MIF, but that did not work. I also
tried closing out of FrameMaker and restarting, and that did not
work.
The book file refused to give up references to OLDTAG and recognize
NEWTAG.

WORKING SOLUTION:
--SB's suggestion to make a new book file and move my files to that
worked great. Yeah!!

Also received these suggestions, but did not try them at this time:
--Save the book file as MIF, open it in text editor, and remove the
references to OLDTAG.
--Import my template file into all of the files in the book again.

[ANN] Adobe Captivate Workshop at Documentation and Training Vancouver

2007-03-08 Thread Scott Abel
Don't miss Adobe Captivate, a half-day workshop with Neil Perlin at
the Documentation and Training UX Conference, April 18-21, 2007.
Held in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, the theme of the 8th
Annual Documentation Training Conference is The User Experience.
The event features sessions and workshops that help technical
communication pros improve the usefulness of the products they create.

Download the program (PDF): http://www.doctrain.com/images/uploads/
doctrain_ux.pdf

Adobe Captivate
Speaker: Neil PerlinTime: 8AM - 12PM 21 April 2007
Track: Workshops

For years, software training was largely text-based… paste screen
shots into a document, add some text with descriptions and
instructions, and voila! The result worked, but how much more
effective might it be if “someone” actually “walked you through the
steps” on the screen? That’s where Captivate comes in, letting you
create that “someone”.

Captivate’s primary use is to help capture what’s on the screen as
you perform a software-based task, such as using a feature in Word.
That series of screen shots is effectively a set of frames, which
users can play back as a movie to show them how to perform the task.
To make the movie more useful, you can add explanations and
instructions in text or audio form, special effects, even
interactivity features that let simulate real software operations.
With these features, Captivate lets you create demonstrations, sales
training simulations, marketing presentations, tutorials, even fairly
sophisticated eLearning. With a few tweaks, you can even use
Captivate as an ad hoc usability test recorder.

Adding to Captivate’s power is the fact that the movies are based on
Flash, but you don’t have to know Flash or touch a line of code.
Better still, Captivate is quick and easy to learn compared to
traditional CBT authoring tools – two days to get up and running, and
cheap – US$600.

This workshop provides a very quick overview of Captivate’s basic
features in order to provide an overview of the tool as a whole. In
a busy four hours, you’ll:

* Look at uses for Captivate.
* Design and plan a movie.
* Record a movie to be used as a demonstration.
* Enhance a movie with text captions and other frame
“annotation” features.

* Publish the finished movie.
* Look at some advanced features.

Learning Objectives

* Define potential uses for Captivate in your company.
* Understand major planning and design issues involved in
creating a movie.

* Record a new movie.
* Use various features to explain and expand upon the contents
of your frames.

* Publish the movie in SWF (Flash) and Word output.

The only prerequisites are a basic knowledge of Windows, Internet
Explorer, and PC skills in general.

Skills - A basic knowledge of Windows, Internet Explorer, and PC
skills in general.

Laptop required.

Equipment – The workshop is hands-on so attendees must bring a laptop
as follows:

* Hardware:
* Pentium III 600 MHz or (preferably) higher.
* 256 Mb RAM, preferably 512 Mb or more, and 100 Mb hard disk
space or more.

* Screen resolution of at least 800 x 600, preferably 1024 x 768.
* A sound card and speakers.
* A CD drive or USB drive.

Software:

* Windows 2000 or XP.
* A Flash-enabled browser, IE 5+ for the course.
* Flash Player – any version from 6.0 through 9.0
* PowerPoint, alone or as a part of Microsoft Office.
* Captivate 2 – either a licensed copy or a 30-day trial.

For the trial copy, go to http://www.adobe.com/products/captivate/,
click the Download A Free Trial link, and follow the instructions on

Re: Frame Improvements

2007-03-08 Thread Bill Swallow

- When a heading row repeats on 2 or more pages, the ruling at the
bottom of the table, and underneath the header row row are not always
the correct ruling style. I have to apply the ruling manually.

I think it has to do with your table style definitions.

- When I apply custom ruling and shading, to a row and select only the
Bottom and Top checkboxes, the ruling is often applied to the left and
right sides of the cell.

Shading will be cell specific, not orientation specific.

- When I try to apply custom ruling to the top of a cell, it often does
not work until I go into the bottom cell and select Top, and then select
go into the top cell and select Bottom.

This is how tables work. Each cell has a top and a bottom... So you
need to ensure that your bottom definition doesn't counter your top
definition and vice versa.

FrameMaker is still better than Word, but for the price you pay I think
they should fix these bugs. The ruling bugs are particularly annoying.

I don't think they're bugs. Then again, I don't see what you see and
have no insight into what you're doing other than your written
perspective.

FYI: MS Communicator

2007-03-08 Thread Mary Sheahan
Hi folks,

Something I've discovered the hard way, and I wanted
to let others know as an FYI.

Problem: On Windows 2000, FM7.1 has intermittent
startup problems with MS Communicator.

Solution: when you can't open from Windows Explorer by
doubleclicking the filename, solution is to exit
communicator, then go into the Windows Task manager
under the Processes tab and manually stop
'communicator.exe'.

Now back to lurking,
Mary

Re: How Do I Create Alphabetical List?

2007-03-08 Thread Yves Barbion

You're welcome, Roger.

Well, you're next question is a nice feature request. ;-)

However, there are two workarounds:

Workaround 1

  1. In your FM source document, type the letters of the alphabet, each
of them in a separate paragraph and give them a dedicated paragraph tag, for
example H0. You can make them white or put them in a separate text frame
outside the print area (or put a white rectangle on top of them).
  2. Generate the alphabetical paragraph list and include H0. H0 will
have the paragraph tag H0APL in the alphabetical paragraph list.
  3. You can change the reference page, so that the $pagenum is
  omitted for H0APL.
  4. Modify the H0APL paragraph tag, so that they look like Group Titles
  of an index.

Workaround 2: use custom markers and Index Generator (IXGen)

  1. Create a custom marker, for example report.
  2. Use Index Generator to put report markers on all H2 headings.
  3. Generate an index of report markers (IOM). There, you will
  automatically have Group Titles.

I've done this with no less than 21 different types of markers and it worked
like a charm.

Import RTF

2007-03-08 Thread John Pilla
Hello, all;
We are in the process of converting older Word documents into FrameMaker.
After stripping and cleaning unwanted old Information Mapping formatting
from Word, saving as RTF . . .
When I import one of the RTF files into our new FrameMaker template file,
the old document comes in as a Text Inset and not as the desired RTF . . .

We use File | Import. And select Retain Source File Formatting so we
can use a Find and Replace on the standard para Styles from Word to the
new Tags in FM template.
However, after importing, because it comes in as a Text Inset, I then have
to select the Text Inset Properties from the Edit menu,
and convert to text.
When we do this, we loose all text in the tables.

How can I import text from an RTF file so that it comes in as RTF and not
as a Text Inset?
Is there a properties setting, somewhere?

RE: Opening SGML

2007-03-08 Thread Andrew Avis
 Serge,

Did your customer give you a structured application with the
 SGML file?
(The structured application consists of at least an EDD and
application definition. It can also include Read/Write rules,
and a template, and maybe even some other things.) If so,
you'll need to use that. If not, you'll need to create one.

Further to this, all you really need is the DTD for the original SGML (which
may include an SGML declaration file and entity files, or not). You can
quickly generate an EDD from the DTD in Frame. The imported SGML won't look
pretty, but it will parse correctly. From that point you can refine the EDD
and develop a structured application to convert various elements into Frame
objects like markers, graphics, and tables.

Many Frame bugs come down to user interface
oddities.

In my view, the program is under-utilized, especially
its ability to do structured documents. It could well
be one of the few applications that remains important
into the next generation of computing, since the
market has caught up with it.

Another example: every time I look at Visual Basic, I
think of Hypercard.

Knowing how technology works, I'd prefer to build on a

Programs like mySQL may have eternal life for the

Arrow navigation in FM tables

2007-03-08 Thread John Pilla
I recall (among other custom) configurations,
that when I last used FM (5.5) I was able to customize a file,

However, that was about 7 years ago.
So can someone refer me to where, if any - this is documented,
or how I might go about configuring FM to enable this?

I have a table question that I can not seem to resolve (Frame
6.0). I have a table where the first 3 rows are duplicating
themselves on the next page when the table wraps across a

Those 3 rows are heading rows instead of body rows. Tables consist of
one or more body rows plus zero or more heading and footing rows, which
repeat on subsequent pages. You set the initial row counts in the Insert
Table dialog.

When you add rows, the Add Rows or Columns dialog lets you add rows
Above Selection, Below Selection, To Heading, or To Footing. But here's
the gotcha: if your cursor is in a heading row, Below Selection adds
heading rows below the existing one. To add body rows, the cursor must
be in a body row.

You can't convert heading rows to body rows (or vice versa). To fix your
existing problem, add 3 body rows to the table. Then copy the contents
of each heading row to a new body row. Finally, delete the unwanted
heading rows.

What concerns me is that many of these tools are Enterprise level.
Meaning that they are too expensive to be purchased by a single
person, and often require a server from which to run. What that
means, is that companies will segregate writers into those who know
the tools, and those who don't. If you want to get a job, you have
to
know the tools. Most companies don't want to teach you to use them.
They want you to know them already. They won't care if you know XML
or SGML. They will focus on the tool.

Ah... Fear and Loathing in TechComm. ;-)

1. There are plenty of non-enterprise solutions for lone writers and
such to use to manage XML content.
2. Technology will always win out over tools, period.
3. Some companies will undoubtedly be tool-centric, which is fine.
If
they want to overlook you as a candidate/hire based on specific
tools
experience and not on technology knowledge and experience, did you
really want to work there in the first place?

Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form

Adobe has recently added a form that allows you to do either, or any Adobe

John,

Read the Online Manual, Customizing Frame Products (in your FM install
directory). I think what you need to do is add some lines to a
customui.cfg file,

Modify MoveIPToPreviousCell KeySequence /Left
Modify MoveIPToNextCell KeySequence /Right
Modify MoveIPToCellAbove KeySequence /Up
Modify MoveIPToCellBelow KeySequence /Down

Re: Import RTF

2007-03-08 Thread Art Campbell

The easiest way to do this is to Open, not import, the source .RTF file in FM.

So, first, in FM, Open the .RTF file. Next, to remove hidden Word
characters, save the file in FM as a MIF format file. Finally, open
the (now clean) MIF file and cut and paste whatever you need into your
destination FM file.

Use the FM Paragraph Designer's Global Update tool to change all tags
of one type to another type.

Re: Arrow navigation in FM tables

2007-03-08 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, John:

You can read about customizing FrameMaker's menus and keystrokes in
Customizing_FrameMaker_Products.pdf in the onlineManuals directory of
your FrameMaker installation.

When you learn the notation of FrameMaker's universal (unix-originally)
keystrokes, you'll be able to interpret the codes for table operations,
and other stuff, too, that's listed in the command files. FrameMaker has
keystroke sequences that are mostly mnemonic, for almost everything you
can do with mice and menus.

Briefly, for some table operations:

NOTE: In this notation, ! represents the Escape key.
NOTE: To perform an action, tap the keys in sequence; don't hold them
down in combinations.

NOTE: Case matters.

To move around in a table:

! t m r (table move insertion pointer right one cell)
! t m l (table move insertion pointer left one cell) (l is lowercase ell)

To select in a table:

NOTE: To get the best mnemonic value from these sequences, think of
Highlight rather than Select

! t h e (table highlight entry; that is, current cell)
! t h r (table highlight row)
! t h t (table highlight table)

Frame 6 crashes on WinXP with edited fmdlg.dll file

2007-03-08 Thread Dave Reynolds

Hi folks

Just posting this in case anyone else has had the same problem. I
received a new PC late last year and had to reinstall all my software,
updates, patches, etc. I also changed at this time from Win2k to
WinXP. I duly installed Frame 6, plus the updates for 405 and XP, plus
my own customisations (keyboard shortcuts, maker.ini, plug-ins, etc).
All was well until last week when I tried to open a Frame file with
missing referenced graphics. I selected to skip the graphics, and Frame
crashed. To cut a long story short, I uninstalled Frame, then
reinstalled it, making sure I did install the 405 and XP patches, then
installed my customisations. I then tried to open the same file and got
the same result - Frame crashed.

At this point I remembered that after the first crash, I thought I might
have forgotten to install the XP patch after I got the new PC. At that
point I tried installing it again, and it came up with an error about a
file not being as expected. I was pretty sure the file it mentioned was
fmdlg.dll, so I then suspected that the crash might have happened
because I have edited fmdlg.dll to increase the size of some dialogue
boxes (using Resource Hacker). I replaced my edited fmdlg.dll file with
the original file and opened the Frame file with missing graphics
again. I chose to skip the missing files and it opened with no
problems. I went back to my edited fmdlg.dll file and Frame crashed.

I've chosen to keep my edited fmdlg.dll file as the expanded dialogue
boxes are very useful. But now I know I can change back to the original
if I need to open a file with missing graphics.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, or know of a way around it?
Is it fixed in Frame 7? I presume not many people have hacked around
with the fmdlg.dll file, so I may be the only person to come across this
problem?

Regards

Dave

RE: Frame output scales incorrectly - corrupt joboptions file?

2007-03-08 Thread Dov Isaacs
There is nothing in the joboptions file that provides
any option for scaling of page sizes. Distiller opens
the .joboptions files read-only. Furthermore, if those
files were corrupted, closing down everything and
reopening would not make the problem go away.

Exactly how are you producing the PDF file?
Save as PDF? Printing directly to the Adobe PDF PostScript
printer driver instance? Somehow (how? driver? options? etc.?)
producing a PostScript file and manually force feeding it
to the Distiller (yum, yum)?

Subject: Frame output scales incorrectly - corrupt joboptions file?

 Hi

I have an annoyance, not really a problem, with my Frame
7.1p116 on XP and Distiller 7.0.7.

My PDF is distilled at 1439% or 1398% or some such random,
4-digit figure. After several normal print jobs, something
cracks, and I get this mess. Closing down everything and
reopening makes the bug go away.

I am alert to the problem so I view the Print dialog
carefully - I swear! It always says 100% in the scale box.
That is why I suspect Distiller. I feel that I have to assume
FM generates a .ps file that is going to produce output
scaled to 100%, and that Distiller chews it up somehow.

 Or...?

Ideas as to the whereabouts of this annoyance? I can go for
months without a sign, but now I had the problem twice in one
day. My Acrobat is 7.0.9, but that cannot possibly be the
 culprit, can it?

 Thanks in advance.

Hello Stuart,

With this modification, you are able to navigate
in tables with the arrow keys - but navigating
within paragraphs is then no more possible.

There's a free FrameScript TableNavigation.fsl
available: http://www.itl.eu/108.0.html#c400
that lets you navigate within tables with the
arrow keys.
(Unfortunately, currently only the german site is
online.)

Hyperlink marker gotcha to be aware of

2007-03-08 Thread hedley . finger
**BUG**
Hypertext markers in generated files with long strings crash FrameMaker
7.0p578, 7.1p114 , 7.2p158

Steps to reproduce bug:
 1. Create a book with a number of components, including a test-target
file which is nested deeply in folders so that its relative pathname from
the *.book file's folder exceeds 143 characters.
 2. Apply a custom condition format to some text in this file.
 3. Generate an index of condition tags with Hypertext markers added to
entries.
 4. Ensure the test target file is closed.
 5. Open the index of conditions generated file and Ctrl-Alt-click the
entry pointing to the test target file. FrameMaker crashes.
 6. Choose File Open and open the test target file.
 7. Repeat Step 5. FrameMaker crashes.
 Results:
FrameMaker crashes as described above.
 Expected results:
The test-target file should open and display the hightlighted condition
format. Other Hypertext markers with instruction strings less than 143
characters do not crash FrameMaker.
 Comment:
The fact that three versions of FrameMaker crash, and the test-target file
can be opened in the normal fashion in all three suggests that the file is
not faulty but that somehow a bug is provoked by an instruction string in
Hypertext markers that is longer than approx. 143 characters. One would
expect that an attempt to create an instruction string longer than 255
characters would provoke a crash or other unexpected behaviour but the
string length is well short of this well-known limit.

Re: Import RTF

You can also copy and Paste Special in RTF format, if that's not too cumbersome.
That's how I import tables from Word docs.

Conditions that won't go away

2007-03-08 Thread rebecca officer
I have dim memories of a plug-in for clearing condition tags from
books.

Failing that, you can delete the tag out of the book by saving the book
as a MIF file, opening it in a text editor, searching for the tag's
definition in the condition catalog, and deleting it.

After you've done that, check that the tag hasn't snuck back into your
files. Also check generated files, backups (delete the book backup
file), templates etc.

It can be really hard to get rid of a condition tag permanently!

Cheers, Rebecca

>>> "Martinek, Carla"  8/03/07 04:55 >>>
OK, I'm stumped. Here's the situation:

I used Framescript to rename a conditional tag before I send a set of
book files out to someone else (renamed it to something making more
sense.) For this email, consider the tags as OLDTAG and NEWTAG.

I then deleted all unused condition tags using the PGFWhopper plugin.
OLDTAG showed as one of the tags that was deleted, and OLDTAG no
longer
exists in ANY document in the book (I checked each file to make sure).
When I check the text with the condition applied, it shows as NEWTAG

However, when I go to show/hide conditions at the book level, OLDTAG
still shows there, and NEWTAG does not. I've generated/updated the
book
file, saved all the files, closed and restarted Frame, and it's still
happening.

Any suggestions?

Frame's future

2007-03-08 Thread Sean Pollock
When in doubt, fib. You can almost always get an evaluation version of, or
book on, the tool for which a company requires knowledge. If you know XML,
the tool usually isn't going to be that hard to learn.

I got my first tech writing job with no knowledge of Frame in 1997 and was
training others a month later. I'm no Einstein, I just looked up the
information I needed.

What concerns me is that many of these tools are Enterprise level.
Meaning that they are too expensive to be purchased by a single
person, and often require a server from which to run. What that
means, is that companies will segregate writers into those who know
the tools, and those who don't. If you want to get a job, you have to
know the tools. Most companies don't want to teach you to use them.
They want you to know them already. They won't care if you know XML
or SGML. They will focus on the tool.

Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is "no".

Heading rows automatically repeat. If so, add body rows below your

(1) Numbering issues with anchored frames (2) Changing numbering in a book

Anchored frames are outside the main flow. The easiest solution is to
number outside them.

Yes. I'd use the <$volnum> variable and control it in the book file.

Make sure to use a different numbering track, not A: and you should be fine.
You could also set this up at the book level, really the preferred
method, using the <$chapnum> or <$volnum> variables instead of your
active counter.

Sure, use <$chapnum> for this -- that's what it's designed for. But it
would only replace the set of brackets you're using for chapter
numbering.

Setting the numbering at the book level and using the <$chapnum> and
<$volnum> variables would be the easiest way to do it. If you have to
redo tags, you'd just import the new formats into multiple files at
once, again at the book level.

It's fairly standard procedure. That's why the numbering properties in
the book file allow you to set the numbering for multiple files to the
same chapter number... It's also one additional reason to use the
<$chapnum> variable. The file=chapter thing is just human tidiness --
the computer doesn't care.

Indeed, FrameMaker's Table features are one of the most powerful and
reliable around.

The only times when I experienced "weird" behavior of tables was when I had
tables in FrameMaker which were imported from ...ahem... MS-Weird. But hey,
luckily we have the TableCleaner plug-in, which makes tables behave properly

Conditions that won't go away - solution(s)

Opening SGML

2007-03-08 Thread Serge De Beil
Hello,

For a new project, we receive a SGML file from our customer.
This SGML file is an export from a database.
What do I need to "parse" this SGML file to Framemaker?

What I've tried is following:
I start Framemaker in Structured Mode.
When I "open" the SGML file, I just get a plain text with all the
SGML codes in it.
When I use the "Parse Structured Document" function, I'm asked which
Structured Application I want to use (DocBook, DocBook 2.1, XDocBook
and XHTML).
I choose one of them, and then I get an error "Could not find
external document type ".

What do I need to open or parse the SGML file in a way that I get a
decent document with all SGML codes 'interpreted'?

Many thanks in advance.

Adobe Captivate
Speaker: Neil PerlinTime: 8AM - 12PM 21 April 2007
Track: Workshops

For years, software training was largely text-based? paste screen
shots into a document, add some text with descriptions and
instructions, and voila! The result worked, but how much more
effective might it be if ?someone? actually ?walked you through the
steps? on the screen? That?s where Captivate comes in, letting you
create that ?someone?.

Captivate?s primary use is to help capture what?s on the screen as
you perform a software-based task, such as using a feature in Word.

Adding to Captivate?s power is the fact that the movies are based on
Flash, but you don?t have to know Flash or touch a line of code.
Better still, Captivate is quick and easy to learn compared to
traditional CBT authoring tools ? two days to get up and running, and

 * Design and plan a movie.
 * Record a movie to be used as a demonstration.
 * Enhance a movie with text captions and other frame
?annotation? features.
 * Publish the finished movie.
 * Look at some advanced features.

Learning Objectives

 * Define potential uses for Captivate in your company.
 * Understand major planning and design issues involved in
creating a movie.
 * Record a new movie.

Opening SGML

2007-03-08 Thread Mike Feimster
Serge,

Did your customer give you a structured application with the SGML file?
(The structured application consists of at least an EDD and application
definition. It can also include Read/Write rules, and a template, and
maybe even some other things.) If so, you'll need to use that. If not,
you'll need to create one.

Mike

Subject: Opening SGML

Serge

I should have said, table ruling does not work correctly on my system,

How Do I Create Alphabetical List?

2007-03-08 Thread Roger Bell
I am working on a reports guide. I will have a TOC, but I also want
another generated list of reports by name and page number. Each Heading
2 in the guide is the name of a report. Can I do this without having to
insert markers for each Heading 2?

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I am using version 7.2.

I think it has to do with your table style definitions.

Shading will be cell specific, not orientation specific.

This is how tables work. Each cell has a top and a bottom... So you
need to ensure that your bottom definition doesn't counter your top
definition and vice versa.

I don't think they're bugs. Then again, I don't see what you see and
have no insight into what you're doing other than your written
perspective.

FYI: MS Communicator

2007-03-08 Thread Mary Sheahan
Hi folks,

Something I've discovered the hard way, and I wanted
to let others know as an FYI.

Problem: On Windows 2000, FM7.1 has intermittent
startup problems with MS Communicator.

Solution: when you can't open from Windows Explorer by
doubleclicking the filename, solution is to exit
communicator, then go into the Windows Task manager
under the Processes tab and manually stop
'communicator.exe'.

Now back to lurking,

How Do I Create Alphabetical List?

   3. You can change the reference page, so that the <$pagenum> is
   omitted for H0APL.
   4. Modify the H0APL paragraph tag, so that they look like Group Titles
   of an index.

Workaround 2: use custom markers and Index Generator (IXGen)

   1. Create a custom marker, for example "report".
   2. Use Index Generator to put report markers on all H2 headings.
   3. Generate an index of report markers (IOM). There, you will
   automatically have Group Titles.

I've done this with no less than 21 different types of markers and it worked
like a charm.

Ah... Fear and Loathing in TechComm. ;-)

1. There are plenty of non-enterprise solutions for lone writers and
such to use to manage XML content.
2. Technology will always win out over tools, period.
3. Some companies will undoubtedly be tool-centric, which is fine. If
they want to overlook you as a candidate/hire based on specific tools
experience and not on technology knowledge and experience, did you
really want to work there in the first place?

The easiest way to clean them up is to "wash" the file by saving to

omsys.com has a utility program that does these steps for you.

And Rick Quatro's TableCleaner plug-in is a must-have if you're going
to be working with tables very much.

Import RTF

2007-03-08 Thread John Pilla
Hello, all;
We are in the process of converting older Word documents into FrameMaker.
After stripping and cleaning unwanted old Information Mapping formatting
from Word, saving as RTF . . .
When I import one of the RTF files into our new FrameMaker template file,
the old document comes in as a Text Inset and not as the desired RTF . . .

We use File | Import. And select "Retain Source File Formatting" so we
can use a Find and Replace on the standard para Styles from Word to the
new Tags in FM template.

Further to this, all you really need is the DTD for the original SGML (which
may include an SGML declaration file and entity files, or not). You can
quickly generate an EDD from the DTD in Frame. The imported SGML won't look
pretty, but it will parse correctly. From that point you can refine the EDD
and develop a structured application to convert various elements into Frame
objects like markers, graphics, and tables.

Frame Improvements

Many Frame "bugs" come down to user interface
oddities.

In my view, the program is under-utilized, especially
its ability to do structured documents. It could well
be one of the few applications that remains important
into the next generation of computing, since the
market has caught up with it.

Another example: every time I look at Visual Basic, I
think of Hypercard.

doesn't need changing.

Programs like mySQL may have "eternal" life for the

task that will not change so greatly a new paradigm is
required.

Now, afraid of my own demise... another story ;)

Arrow navigation in FM tables

2007-03-08 Thread John Pilla
I recall (among other custom) configurations,
that when I last used FM (5.5) I was able to customize a file,
and thus enable using the arrow keys to navigate within an FM table.

(Why Adobe continues to leave this out - is a mystery to me.)

However, that was about 7 years ago.
So can someone refer me to where, if any - this is documented,
or how I might go about configuring FM to enable this?

Thanks.

Table Question (wrapping onto 2nd page)

John,

Read the Online Manual, Customizing Frame Products (in your FM install
directory). I think what you need to do is add some lines to a

Import RTF

2007-03-08 Thread Art Campbell
The easiest way to do this is to Open, not import, the source .RTF file in FM.

So, first, in FM, Open the .RTF file. Next, to remove hidden Word
characters, save the file in FM as a MIF format file. Finally, open
the (now clean) MIF file and cut and paste whatever you need into your
destination FM file.

Use the FM Paragraph Designer's Global Update tool to change all tags
of one type to another type.

Arrow navigation in FM tables

NOTE: In this notation, "!" represents the Escape key.

NOTE: To get the best mnemonic value from these sequences, think of
"Highlight" rather than "Select"

! t h e (table highlight entry; that is, current cell)
! t h r (table highlight row)
! t h t (table highlight table)

2007-03-08 Thread Bill Swallow
Except for the fibbing part. I don't advocate saying you know
something you don't, even if learning it is a non-issue. I advocate
being up front about it and talk about the tech stuff you do know.
Many times companies will then agree that tools are easy to learn and
that the concepts are transferable from one tool to another.

Subject: Frame 6 crashes on WinXP with edited fmdlg.dll file

Hi folks

Just posting this in case anyone else has had the same problem. I
received a new PC late last year and had to reinstall all my software,
updates, patches, etc. I also changed at this time from Win2k to WinXP.
I duly installed Frame 6, plus the updates for 405 and XP, plus my own
customisations (keyboard shortcuts, maker.ini, plug-ins, etc).

I replaced my edited fmdlg.dll file with
the original file and opened the Frame file with missing graphics again.
I chose to skip the missing files and it opened with no problems. I
went back to my edited fmdlg.dll file and Frame crashed.

I presume not many people have hacked around
with the fmdlg.dll file, so I may be the only person to come across this
problem?

Regards

Dave

Frame output scales incorrectly - corrupt joboptions file?

2007-03-08 Thread Dov Isaacs
There is nothing in the joboptions file that provides
any option for scaling of page sizes. Distiller opens
the .joboptions files read-only. Furthermore, if those
files were "corrupted," "closing down everything and
reopening" would not make the problem go away.

Exactly how are you producing the PDF file?
Save as PDF? Printing directly to the Adobe PDF PostScript
printer driver instance? Somehow (how? driver? options? etc.?)
producing a PostScript file and manually force feeding it
to the Distiller (yum, yum)?

Arrow navigation in FM tables

2007-03-08 Thread Klaus Mueller
Hello Stuart,

With this modification, you are able to navigate
in tables with the arrow keys - but navigating
within paragraphs is then no more possible.

There's a free FrameScript TableNavigation.fsl
available: http://www.itl.eu/108.0.html#c400
that lets you navigate within tables with the
arrow keys.
(Unfortunately, currently only the german site is
online.)

Kind regards,

Actually, it's not a separate utility, it's part of our main
plugin. You can obtain the free unlimited demo version at:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm
and install at least the Frame plugin DLLs (two of them).
Then "Wash Via MIF" will appear on your File menu, and
you can do it for all files in a book with one click using
Shift-File from a book. There are other handy utilities in
there too... like our automation tool, runfm. All free.

I totally agree. In fact, I think there's a much better chance
that Rick's plugin will fix the OP's problem than that Wash Via
MIF will...
