Should I re-write the paragraph verbatim? What clarification do you need? You were talking about the ROUTER in bridge mode missing Duncan's query about the MODEM in bridge mode, that was the thrust of my response. I suspect someone local (or ?) keeps camping out on my assigned IP addy from my ISP so that they can just dick with my xDSL modem or my Router. I know I have my xDSL modem set to a bridge mode. I suspect this makes it a straight wire connection to my Router's WAN port. I would never use Bridge Mode unless I was feeding a box that was specifically setup to be a firewall, something like IP Cop. Should I NOT use bridge mode in my TELCO-supplied modem I would be Double Nat-ng and have 2 firewalls. If you are using your router in bridge mode then it is not doing NAT or firewalling. Just because Wins has what it calls a firewall has nothing to do with NAT. I view this as excess overhead. Perhaps my bad. My router does both NAT and supports its' own firewall and SPI. Both of these selections have been activated since day one! You can't have it both ways ! If you have the router firewall switched on and NAT switched on its not in Bridge Mode I think I have my Router as |strong| as I currently comprehend its' directions. Your router is not being used as anything but a modem. Its most valuable assets are being thrown away by it being configured as it is. Can you please share some more logic to this? I believe that my Router is my single point of 1st protection to Inbound stuff. Or, perhaps you and I are wired differently. This comment I do not understand. I doubt that we are wired differently. :-) But you are right, the router should be the 1st point of protection. If you really have Bridge Mode turned on, then its simply a modem without offering any protection. All Bridge Mode does is pass on the IP address that the ISP assigns to your connection. Turns out, I have to save Router logs and reboot the Router about every 3-7 days to recover a semi-firm connection. The Router is a DLink DGL-4300. All wireless is disabled. I use wired LAN only. I use a Dlink router. I have mine set to firewall and NAT. The firewall blocks all unrequested incoming traffic and lets everything out. NAT allows me to use a range of IP addresses that are not Internet routeable effectively allowing the use of several machines from the single IP that my ISP assigns me. Which incidentally changes each time I restart the router. OK. Understand this logic. Same-same. That's how life is here too. The problem is I have to re-boot the Router several times a day! This is a totally different issue ! This could simply be a noisy incoming line providing a weak noisy signal. In fact a weak noisy signal to the router could be anywhere between the CO and the router. Or it could be that the router is dieing. I've replaced my router several times because its performance has become degraded, probably due to high voltage transients on the telephone line feeding it. I've also had the spark gaps replaced because they have been damaged during thunder storms. Is this possible? Do not know why someone local chooses to pick on me? I will suppose giggles and laughs for the present! This is the same view to me as past electrical storm interference I had with an older (retired) xdsl modem. I'd fully suggest going with the Rampage, it's a great board so far for me. Part of the best $1300 I've ever spent on a PC upgrade when it comes to the wow, I can see the difference factor. The rest being Q6600, Visiontek HD3870X2 OC'd, 2GB Corsair DDR2-800, case+psu. Only regret is the audio and that would be the same with all the current boards. With top-end LGA775 QX CPU's still ~$1000 which would have to come down in price after (delayed recently for erata) Nehalem ships. Multiple rails came about because the EU mandated that the power on a single rail should not exceed 240VA (12V x 20A). Intel then stipulated in the ATX12V v2.xx standard that if the power on a 12V rail was likely to exceed 240VA, a second 12V rail needed to be engineered. For practical purposes, a limit of 18A was used, allowing for 2A headroom. Manufacturers replied by mass-producing multiple rail power supplies, using several types of engineering. Some power supplies are well engineered, and the 12V rails are truly separated with separate transformers. However, others draw power from one single transformer and the rails are only separated after transforming takes place. The issue with multiple rails is that the power per rail is relatively low, which unfortunately often results in the use of inferior parts. Thanks Joe! Chapter one is written, but the story is far from over. I think we all know what kind of an asshole I can be and I'm not conceding loss yet. Biggest sticking point for me is IF (big IF) then have a functional card I want x-ship call tags because I am not paying anymore $$$ for this thing nor being down for weeks. As it is I'm getting burnt for $40 because I ordered less than a week before the price drop rebate kicked in, so I am digging my heels in. Nvidia was a non-starter here and the card is damn fast if the cool just worked the way it's supposed to! Re: [H] Reboot Problem
When my PSU was failing I had no end of trouble with 4 HDD's throwing unrecoverable sector errors. Run Seatools, flag 'em, reboot and hours/days later i'd get hangs/stutters, repeat. Then the BSOD's started and in the end it was the PSU because system was trouble free for the month before I switched to new PC. Well well, Newegg get's a +1 today. Seems they will pay for shipping back fro AND issue a next day shipment when UPS shows the package accepted at the UPS store. Not that this was their initial offer mind you, but 2 emails later they agreed to this much but declared we not getting any returns on these. Bunk I assume given how widespread the problem seems to be going back more than a few months. Ah well, so I have to take it into Spokane on monday hope that means new card before Wednesday. Of course I could just end up with the next card on the pallet and the same problem, sigh. Sapphire on the other hand would not even make the explicit statement that a replacement card would not have the same issue even when directly asked that question. That's a good move, since it lets you use it in test/demo environments without a key. There's already versions of windows XP that work this way for the right class of consumer like OEM's Developers so NBD. They updated it to work with NAP (Network Access Protection), allowing organizations to start using NAP to protect their corporate networks without having to move all clients to Vista. Kernel mode cryptographic functionality...I suppose that other vendors could tap into this to strengthen their existing DRM, but it really isn't something revolutionary. They disabled many known activation cracks...boo hoo, if you stole the OS, you deserve a brick, period. I disagree, I think stealing XP is an act of protest against a MS dominated market where you use it or loose out and thus are being price gouged made to pay to beta test MS mistakes. In fact I say the same about Apples OS in that case a frak you to apple for forcing you into their limited and still overprice hardware. Frankly if you're not asking MS for support what entitles them to cash this late in the game anyway? No I don't feel Parallels, WINE, Linux, or Unix BS are completely the same as having real windows. Personally I'll stick with XP since I know the version I have will not frak me when I radically change my hardware, screw the EULA if I'm destroying one box to rebuild it as a new system since it's still only one system. It's yet more FUD coming from people without a clue. The DRM in Vista that most people claim to hate is the protected content path for encrypted high definition video delivery (which by itself ONLY comes into play if you are playing back protected content, ala HD-DVD/BRD). It's so tightly integrated that MS would have had to backport the entire video driver model to XP. That's an absolutely tremendous undertaking, and is absolutely NOT a part of SP3. This bullshit probably came from the idiots who claimed that MP3s would no longer play if you upgraded to Vista...pathetic. I hate DRM as much as the next guy, maybe more, but let's try to separate the facts from the BS, can we? Have not read up on it but I don't want something that can lock me out of my system data if MS suddenly decides I'm a pirate, not the case then NDB to me. Of course if it somehow limits or dictates how I view content, limits my connectivity to content, or ladens my system down with invasive process that too would be an issue for me. Re: [H] SP3 Endless rebooting
The patch before the SP problem (roughly, I read quick) is such that windows thinks the patch version is newer than SP version preventing replacement leaving PC in a reboot loop. I also thought it was fixed by the release SP but then the issue happened in RC2 which came after the patch so I'd assume it's possible to have the same issue still. AFAIK removing the patch before applying SP was the recommended best procedure. It's just boneheaded that this happens at all esp. this late in the testing cycle! The problem machine has never had any other version of SP3 installed only SP2 with all updates. Re: [H] 6ch analog to Dolby Digital TOSLINK
Other than PL-II mode, there is no way to make 2ch digital into 5.1 with the logitech's head. It does not acceptably simulate 6ch or even 3ch from a digital stereo signal. PL-II mode is a joke and does not even remotely give me what I had with DD5.1 signal coming out of the Soundstorm before: 6 discrete channels generated by the sound card's DSP+encoder from stereo over 1 cable = 2xfront,2xrear,1xLFE,1xcenter. I don't see why this escapes you? Nevermind the other issue which we're talking simulated 5.1 from 2.0 and glossing over the fact I can't get games in 5.1 over digital either so this is a moot conversation. Hayes Elkins wrote: I never mentioned using analog cables, this was regarding your single digital sound output on your motherboard. Running three 3.5mm stereo cables across my desk is unacceptable. The Logitech Z-680 seems to mix some of the channels together vs. discrete 6ch if you use analog 6ch direct mode and PL-II mode sucks big time, period. If I did use the 3 patches, I'd still need an SPDIF for passing DVD audio in digital (which also seems broken on this card). Bottom line I want to use digital not analog to attach to my speakers which means DD5.1 like I had been doing for the past 5 years! Asus could have saved me $50 by not bundling this pile of shit with my mobo and I would not be complaining now. [H] 6ch analog to Dolby Digital TOSLINK
Just got my new Intel Q6600 system assembled only to find out that the old nvidia soundstorm on the a7n8x I replaced was the only chipset made that did DD via toslink/spdif. =( Problem: Supreme FX II (AD1988B) soundcard that comes with the Asus Rampage does not do DD via toslink unless it's passing on pre-encoded DD source. In other words unlike the Soundstorm, it does not encode it's own output to DD for the toslink connector forcing use of the three 3.5 analog outs. Further, using analog 6-ch direct, the logitech Z-680 seem to be mixing some audio from front or rear to the subwoofer which is a bitch given how boomy the 680's sub is! Solution: Looking for a either a replacement for the soundcard that does encode it's output to toslink unto DD thus not forcing me to go the analog route *OR* a way to convert the 6-channel analog back into DD so I can continue to use my Logitech Z-680 speakers via toslink. Re: [H] Truecrypt
You can also simply batch the mounting process with a cmd file. A way to avoid needing passwords is to use keyfiles which could be sent separately. Keyfiles can be any file(s), you simply point TC to them in addition to the container. For sure you will need admin rights even for TCtraveler mode because there is a driver involved. Brian Weeden wrote: Yessort of. It's called a Traveler Disk and it is pretty easy to do. What you do is create a Truecrypt container that is maybe 10MB smaller than the size of the CD. Put your data in the container. Then under Truecrypt go to tools - Traveler Disk Setup. Point it to the dir where you have your truecrypt container and it will put a copy of the truecrypt exe and drivers. Then tell it on boot to mount the container and it will make an autorun file. Burn the autorun, container, and Truecrypt dir to the CD root and presto. The catch is of course for the autorun to work you must have it enabled and I believe you must have admin privileges to install the truecrypt driver. IIRC the Logitech wireless is in the 20 or 40Mhz range while BT is 2GHz+ so I'd doubt it would affect both the same way. Could it be that the LCD has a bad inverter? Re: [H] Power connector Sapphire Radeon X1950 PRO
I know there is secondary PSU's being made to supplement main PSU power to video cards but don't know if it takes specially wired PSU's to allow them to work in tandem. From a 12V rail standpoint I'd assume you'd want to be feeding it from 2 separate rails assuming 16A/rail so you don't tax one rail. Looks like the Sapphire version shipped with a molex splitter but again I'd be worried about taxing a single rail. Given the power requirements of a modern cards, vendors should be more explicit stating their power breakdown by bus number of rails. Re: [H] Why is multiplayer so addictive?
Well I'm not even talking about multiplayer license. The issue is gifting/lending finished stand-alone titles which is totally verboten by Steam unless you buy something that duplicates existing licenses like OB did for HL2. While I agree that at least 1-on-1 should be included for the $50 (CC or Red Alert did this), I'm not even asking to use 1 license to allow 2+ people to play at the same time. Steam licenses the player, not the computer, which sounds nice you can play what you have a license for on any PC. Nice until you want to give away a finished Ep1 or let your kid play TF2 when you're not. The kicker with HL2 DM not being in OB is anyone with a ATI or Nvidia video card is entitled to a free copy of DM! So why not just include it in every OB since that's 100% of the gaming ready PC market and no one but a masachist would play it on another chipset?!?! Steam pricing pisses me off mostly because supposedly Steam prevents pirated copies, or at least prevents them from playing VAC servers (which is most). It's also eliminates manufacturing lowers distro costs because there's no stock and you can download what you buy. So the prices should drop but they don't! Good news is HL2 is a great engine if you can ignore the above issues and don't let Havok's lame physics bother you much, and consider Valve seems committed to improving the experience. This is unlike buying into Tribes Vengeance only to find out not enough copies sold therefore they weren't going to work on release any patches. Without the patches the game was nearly worthless in multiplayer. Hunter, Gary wrote: I wish all multiplayer games game with a multi purchase discount. UT3 was a real disappointment, we spent $150 for 3 copies just to find our favorite game was gone. We felt a little ripped off. Re: [H] Need AMD XP Sempron CPU
I see what your saying but you know me well enough after all these years the last thing I'd do is grab some sis board in a casual fashion. Could be the greatest thing since sliced bread but it's more than I want to go through. Appreciate the thought but this is a EoL patch-up to give the kids that would not have cost me this much if I had simply suspected the PSU to begin with. Shit it would not have been an issue if the Antec scumbags had built the PSU right or at least stood behind their steaming pile of excrement. CW wrote: Yes, I'm being serious. Ok, let's say $78 is the max you want to spend, and you have a new AGP video card you want to use. Fine, you can grab an AM2 with AGP (they exist, SIS) for about $33. Grab an AM2 Processor for $35, and a stick of 1G for $10. Bam. You just spent $78. And you ended up with a LE-1150, yeah, a blah board but you support your video card, and off you go. Sure, you'd still be cooked to find out it was your power supply, which is a given, but on the other end, your DDR and other components (like the Asus board) would sell to make up about 1/2 the distance. :) I'm not talking about spending a ton of money.. but an LE-1150, a chip you can grab OEM for less then $35, would be easily the equal and superior to a Sempron whatever SocketA, the board wouldn't be, but you'd keep the AGP card so who cares, and you'd get better SATA, USB, etc. support. Just saying, if your budget was $78, the combo is out there ;) CW Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Re: [H] Strange Hard Drive Problem
3% is prime ( TPB was rated here), 6-10% I thought was common for ATX 1.x PSU? It had been skirting 4.7ish for the longest time so I chalked it up to crap PSU not thinking it would get worse, duh! Well these particular Antec's (True Power) are now infamous for failing within a year or so due to bad caps. Sadly my system sat for just over a year after the PSU RMA in November 2005 (just long enough to be out of warranty) until I could afford a AGP video card to power it up in January 2007. Hence a year, 1 month later in 2008 I have another dead Antec with less than 3yrs run-time total between them. Worse, Antec frakkers wouldn't do anything for me given the unit was bought 9/2003 despite the described total run-time and the massive failures of this model. No more Antec's for me regardless of who ODM's for them. At some point I will replace the caps with new ones save this as a backup PSU. DHSinclair wrote: j, I agree. You did get it half right! LOL! I'd be looking for sagging power lines based on what I am going through with my Antec 480W. Weird reboots, drives not showing up on reboots, bad sectors cropping up constantly on 2 new seagate 7200.10's, etc All traced back to a sagging 5V line and confirmed by opening the Antec PSU to find puffed/leaking crapola caps from Fujyyu. Still trying to track down order a new ATX 1.3 PSU with enough 5V amps to drive the old A7N8X w/ Sempron 3300+ in addition to 4 HDD's an ATI X850. When I say AOL in the same sentence, I had to clarify. RR would mean always on without regard to AOL's software. So therefore if all other internet traffic is working as expected there would have to be an issue with live update itself. Re: [H] Breaking Disk Encryption
Nice find Ali! sorry this long, by I feel passionate about this... Yet another disturbing insight into how exploitable the modern PC is. To be fair, peaking into RAM of running systems has been PoC'd more than a few times (as have a countermeasure or 2) all useless against a fully unpowered system. Scary to have powered vs. not redefined though! When I 1st started toying 10+ years ago with Norton Your Eyes Only, E4M later DriveCrypt it seemed the biggest issue after what cipher, what app, was OS swapping RAM to disk either pagefile or for hibernation. Yet for for years Crypto experts like Bruce Schneier and others have been saying that no matter what, using general purpose computers to run encryption software is flawed exploitable. It would seem that ultimately noting short of both full RAM storage encryption is going to prevent a running system from having it's brains sucked out scrutinized. We know of attempts with M$ XBOX, HDCP, or HD-DVD/BluRay to secure against scrutiny. While they are seeing varying degrees of success locking US out very little is coming in the form of letting us lock THEM out. Obviously it's possible to build systems that once set-in-motion, encrypt and continue to run leaving no keys in ram to sniff since only the system knows what it's using to crypt/decrypt like Colossus Guardian talking to each other in a language only they knew! Until then, on running systems, manual user intervention is needed where auto-dismount is not practical. Passwords/phrases must die, keys must be tied to a secure physical token so that removing it means there are no keys. Removal of token should trigger memory wiping so keydata is not cached. Some of this must already exist? I won't even go into EFS, it's default lame option of obscuring the master keys in the registry, or the fact that mode 3 only works with floppies! Now any system that can be suspended has got to be easier to protect IMHO. If RAM sniffing an issue, then OTFE software needs to add key flush on on suspend followed by re-authentication to retrieve keys from external source (read not on the PC's RAM, HDD, SDD) on resume rather use RAM cached copies. Don't know how easy that is to tie in, but I assume under the current model apps have to wait for storage drivers to come back online after suspend anyway so I imagine it how this hole gets closed. Personally I'd like to have a encrypted hibernation file tied to a physical token for plug boot authentication. Bottom line is time has come for *affordable*, faster, dedicated hardware solutions to be made available. Either in the form of TPM's in motherboards, storage devices, host controllers, or even inline black boxes between device host using a tamper-proof hardware solution. A solution like the IronKey USB flash drive has between it's USB interface flash RAM. Give me a bunch of those modules in the form of SATA go-betweens programmable hardware security token I'd have all my SATA drives encrypted! Re: [H] Breaking Disk Encryption
I seriously doubt anyone is saying you can crack AES *WITHOUT* access to the keys or a serious flaw in the implementation there of. This article is about a flaw where the keys are in RAM in the clear. Flushing the keys when the system goes into a locked or suspend state (while halting processes that need access to the encrypted data) and forcing the keys to be re-entered externally on resume would remove this vulnerability completely. Hardware *is* the solution if you understand the flaws of using general purpose computers to run encryption software vs. dedicated hardware doing it. Then factor in as you said, an external factor like a token or certificate that is separate from the PC. Without RAM to be accessed, there locally is no key to be found by forensics. As to if someone can get to the other component needed to decrypt is another discussion completely and moot if that component can be destroyed. A completely encrypted system is not debuggable because by definition nothing is in the clear. Sure you can read it's RAM while tweaking it's input ports trying to discern what it's keys are based on injecting known values but asymmetrical is supposed to mean even with encryption key, source plain data resulting encrypted data it's not going to reveal the decryption key. Look into the IronKey drive I was mentioning you'll understand it would be damn hard to get at where the keys are to connect debuggers still be able to retrieve keys nor a still working module. That module as a SATA go-between would mean your not getting into the drive without whatever component unlocks the encryption module. Even with flawed TC on a Powered down system, no trace keydata on the HDD, no get in short of brute force (AES? TwoFish? much luck!) FBI or not. Only option would be water boarding and that's not going to produce results if the keys were on a component and destroyed vs. being a password you can force out of a subject. Mesdaq, Ali wrote: Hardware is not really the solution. The problem is layered but the main problem here is physical security. If you have a system and all of its components to encrypt and decrypt are right there in one piece and people can connect debuggers to it or analyze it they could break anything you do. But if the system is not complete without something else like a private key that needs to be retrieved remotely then you have some extra security. Then you can control the process by seeing if physical security is compromised you just don't send that private key and the system is incomplete. For true secure solutions you need to layer, then separate, then control access to each layer and component. So in the case of hard drive encryption if an FBI person gets your drive and you can bet they can find out everything on it if they care enough. Security is really just a level of comfort you can deal with. EVERYTHING can be compromised in some way. Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your home page. http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Re: [H] Offline Windows Updater
Totally doable if you use a INF instead of a REG to do the patching so you have a control over setting or reverting the settings by simply changing the parameters of the call to the INF. Initiate the setup call the INF install with GUIRunOnce in WINNT.SIF. As to how to automatically detect when all updates are installed I'm stumped but removing is as simple as calling the same command with a different section. To invoke the INF Add a line to $OEM$\Cmdlines.txt to invoke the INF you created from the sysdff difference file. The command is of the same form as you would use to invoke any Windows 95-style INF. The format is as follows: RUNDLL32 syssetup,SetupInfObjectInstallAction section 128 inf where: Section specifies the name of the section in the INF file. Inf specifies the name of the INF file. This should be specified as a relative path to avoid invoking Setup's default INF rules, which look for an unqualified filename in the system inf directory instead of the current directory. For example, specify ..\newtools.inf, not just newtools.inf. The command is always enclosed in double quotation marks. Mesdaq, Ali wrote: Greg your the Man! nLite has it's place when making custom install XP CD's. Autopatcher was quite good and is not dead but rather they've been forced to change tack by scripting the downloads (to come direct from M$ servers) needed to create the packages. Right now it looks like the downloader has some issues with stalling and I would not be surprised if M$ is causing that on purpose. Personally I still start with the AP August 2007 core if I reinstall or patch a system because it's just that much less I have to download. Re: [H] MP3 Tag Informaton in XP
3 things to help you along. Use this to increase the BagMRU limit to 8000 folders. BagMRU is where the view settings are cached for the Most Recently Used folders: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/bags8000.reg This VBS lets you set the Explorer columns for a given folder sets sub-folders to same settings: Folder View Master http://mysite.verizon.net/res18hr7/FVM3.zip Great, free audio file manager: Media Monkey http://www.mediamonkey.com Steve Tomporowski wrote: Somewhere along the line, I've noticed that the My Computer View in XP gives me (sometimes) MP3 tag information in the file view. It also gives the ability to change 'properties'. Great for checking if the tags are up to snuff after ripping. HOWEVER This doesn't seem to be consistent. Sometimes it's done automagically, other times the folder will have only MP3s, but all you get is file info. Now I can go in by hand and change that by adding and deleting columns, but that takes a long time to do. Is there any way of either 1) Having it always give me tag info or 2) being able to change it in one shot rather than have to diddle with columns? I haven't looked closely at it yet, but just having that ability to change tags outside of my Audio Collection program would be a sweet thing ThanksSteve Looking for last minute shopping deals? Thanks Duncan but it has to be 3000+ or better, 400Mhz FSB part. =( LOL, you BiL is hard-up if he's hoping for charity in the form of a free 1.2G T-bird! Second that, Teleport Pro was very good but not free. Alternatively, I used to use an app called Teleport Pro. Haven't used it in years, and it isn't free, but it did an excellent job at mirroring websites. For legit tools, I've had to mark the folders as ignore to keep SAV from wiping them out. Re: [H] Truecrypt 5.0 now does system (boot) drive encryption and works with OSX
If you run TC's benchmark during the container creation process you can see what kind of hit you're going to take. Notice it or not, depending on what cipher if you're chaining them together. there is a performance hit. My assumption is it's not drive speed but CPU so the faster the CPU(s), the less you'll notice. Combining TwoFish + AES (for example) WILL cause a performance hit. Re: [H] Truecrypt 5.0 now does system (boot) drive encryption and works with OSX
If you use keyfile(s) then passwords are not an issue. You just issue your users a small capacity thumbdrive encrypted by TC w/ password to protect the keyfile(s) on it. Or if you are serious pick up some IronKeys and use them to store keyfile(s). Don't know how this affects the new TC version if it's pre-boot security but works great post-boot to mount my secure documents partition. Yes you can/should backup but there some data that is too large for backup yet you want stored securely (temp files like downloads) or windows goes whacky between backups you rather not loose the changed data. I have had this happen under DriveCrypt previous versions of TC where your entire container/partition is useless due to corruption in the beginning of the container. On an unencrypted partition there is always the ability to do sector-by-sector. Even windows EFS worst you loose is 1 file, so TC the like to be as recoverable IMHO. Harry McGregor wrote: IMHO if you care enough about your data to use whole disk encryption, you care enough about your data to setup an encrypted backup, such as ssh secured dirvish, or Bacula over local network, or even over a vpn. Even a laptop can be backed up well while on net using Bacula. We have several field laptops that go to tape nightly when on net, and the users are instructed to leave the laptops on at night for that purpose. I am seriously considering setting up True Crypt for all of our laptop users, as a government unit, we have significant data loss prevention issues. For a long time I was concerned about data encryption due to the inability to get at it if a user loses their password, but I think True crypt has some master key options that we can deploy as well. I have been looking over documentation on it quite a bit today. http://www.dirvish.org/ http://www.bacula.org/en/ Harry Brian Weeden wrote: Hard disk maintenance tools like Spin Rite will work just fine but you're right, data recovery would be a pain. Re: [H] Truecrypt 5.0 now does system (boot) drive encryption and works with OSX
Now that's cool news! Truecrypt is good stuff. I have yet to see data recovery program to salvage encrypted partitions (assuming you had the cipher). Doesn't make me real comfortable if a single bad sector would leave my data inaccessible. Likely no more than EFS does but would depend on the type of encryption used. Ben Ruset wrote: I wonder how much overhead encrypting the system partition puts on the system. Re: [H] Mystery applets?
LOL, my father is just entering his 60's and is forever asking me the same kind of questions. He's always worried about some event in the firewall log or the potential to have a virus that can't be detected, yet only uses his machine a few hours a month. In other words he frets over the details without understanding the big picture. Bottom line Duncan is you, like my father, need to start Googling for some of these answers because the questions are so far out. If you both did this I think fewer of these questions would surface because you'd develop solid base knowledge and get a feel for what's what. In other words if you are a paranoid control freak then you need to READ MORE not ask more questions of the rest of us because it sinks in better when you learn breadth of the material rather than asking pin-point questions in a vacuum.
