Hi Ted, if the shortcuts don't work, another way, is with the focus in the items view: 1. No items should be selected. If an item is selected, you can deselect it by pressing ctrl+spacebar. 2. Open the context menu. 3. Open the view sub menu, and choose the view you want. Concerning making all the other folders have the same view. Since Windows Vista, you can have more control over applying views to other folders. Rather than simply applying to all folders, you can apply to all folders which are optimized for the same kind of files. Folders can be optimized for documents, music, pictures, videos, and general items. For a folder, the setting of its optimization for the kind of files it contains is found on the Customize page of the folder's properties dialog. Note also that the view settings of some top levels folders, like your personal folder, and This PC have independent settings. To apply the view of the current folders to all the other folders which are optimized for the same kind of files: 1. To open the Folder Options dialog: open the File menu (Alt + F), and choose Options. 2. Move to the View page. 3. Press the Apply to Folders button. A Folder views dialog opens asking you whether you want all folders of this type to match this folder's view settings. Press Enter to press the Yes button. 4. Tab to the OK button and press it. wlm is no longer supported by microsoft, and so you can't download wlm from the microsoft website any more. You probably can from other places, but you would have to be careful where you downloaded it from. However, you might be able to repair it. I'm not sure how accessible this will be for your version of windows essentials, you might need sighted help to be able to do it. I've got Windows essentials (which includes windows live mail) 2012 installed. If I got to programs and features, select windows essentials 2012, open its context menu and choose uninstall/change, then a dialog opens which contains a button for repairing windows essentials. Incidentally, the entry for windows essentials in programs in features will tell you which version you are using. Hi, Could you let us know which version of windows live mail you are using? To do this, with windows live mail open, press insert + ctrl + v (assuming you're using desktop layout). Hi Fernando, the problem seems to be that when Jaws is running, Audacity is sent additional messages to redraw itself, and at times when it is not expecting them. I fear that Freedom scientific may not consider fixing the problem with Audacity as a high priority, but I hope this isn't the case. Hi Jim, just a minor point about the use of backspace in File explorer. If the focus is in the items view, then backspace normally has the same effect as alt+left arrow, it takes you back a folder. However, if there is not a folder to go back to, then it takes you up a level. So backspace will often take you up a level, but not always. Compare this with the keystrokes alt + up arrow, which always takes you up a level, and alt + left arrow, which always takes you back a folder. For example, if you've got File Explorer configured to open at Quick access: 1. Press windows key + e, to open file explorer at quick access. 2. Select and open the downloads folder (assuming it's one of the folders in your quick access folder). 3 . Press backspace. If you are in any of the sub-categories of the settings area, pressing the backspace key will take you back to the search edit box, of the main window of the settings area, just tab one time to the list of the 9 main categories. *Edit box. Hi Kevin, you say that your playback device is intel display audio. This is for sending audio along a hdmi connection, so I assume that your speakers are in or attached to your display. If this is the case, then if you want to record "what you hear" in audacity then in the devices section of preferences set: 1. host combo box to windows wasapi. 2. playback device combo box to intel display audio. 3. recording device combo box to intel display audio (loopback). 4. channels combo box to 2 (stereo). Hi Jean, in the following guide to WLM, there's a main section on Contacts, in this section there are sub sections on creating, editing, and using categories: http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Windows-Live-Mail-2011-Guide.html This is the relevant excerpt from the guide: Categories A category is a group of contacts, and any categories which you create appear in the Folder tree. The top level item is Contacts, and this contains the category All Contacts, together with any categories which you create. After each category name there's the number of contacts in that category, which Jaws incorrectly reads as the number of unread messages. When a category is selected in the Folder tree, then the contacts in that category are shown in the Contact list. If either the top level item Contacts, or the All Contacts category is selected, then all your contacts are shown in the Contact list. Creating a new category 1. On the Home tab, in the New group, press the Category button (*Ctrl + Shift + G*). 2. The Create a new category dialog opens, and the first control is an edit box for the name of the category. Type in a name, and then press *Enter*to press the default Save button. Note that you can add contacts to a category and remove them in the dialog for creating a new category. There's a list of contacts for doing this, but unfortunately Jaws doesn't read whether or not a contact is selected. So it's probably easier to do this using the methods described in the next two sections. Adding contacts to a category 1. In the folder tree, select either the Contacts item or a category other than the one to which you want to add contacts. 2. Select one or more contacts in the contact list, then on the context menu, open the Copy Contact To sub menu, and choose a category. 3. Note that for some strange reason the Folder tree automatically becomes the focus, so if you want to add more contacts, you have to *Tab* back to the Contact list. Removing contacts from a category 1. In the folder tree, select the category. 2. In the contact list, select one or more contacts, open the context menu, and choose Remove Contact from Category. 3. Again, for some strange reason, the Folder tree automatically becomes the focus, so if you want to remove more contacts, you have to *Tab* back to the Contact list. Sending messages using categories In a new message window, you can type in the names categories, just as you would the names of contacts. When the message is sent, the name of a category is replaced by all the addresses of the contacts in that category. Note that in the context menu of a category in the Folder tree there's a Send Email command, but it's always unavailable — a Windows Live Mail bug. Hi Al, others have suggested that after opening the save as dialog, you can type the complete path of the file into the filename edit box, for example c:\user\david\documents\bank\letter, were bank is a folder in your documents folder, and letter is the name for the new file. This works just fine, but there are other ways that involve less typing, and I'll describe one. You have to set some stuff up first, but it then makes saving reasonably straightforward, and you only have to type the file name. A couple of things to do first in Windows explorer. The first is to add the folder bank (or whatever) to your favourite locations in Windows explorer. 1. Open windows explorer 2. Go to the bank folder. The list view should now show the contents of that folder. 3. Press shift+tab to move to the tree view. 4. Press home to move to the first item which is favorites. 5. Open its context menu, and choose add current location to favorites. 6. If you arrow down from favorites, you should now see that bank is one of your favourite locations. The second thing to do in Windows explorer is to make sure that the tree view opens to the current folder. 1. Open the tools menu, and choose options. 2. On the general page, tab to the check box "show all folders" 3. Press down arrow to move to the check box "Automatically expand to current folder". If that checkbox isn't checked, check it. 4. Press enter to press the default Ok button. With this now set up, here's how you could save a document to the bank folder: 1. After you've written a new document, press ctrl+S to save. The save as dialog opens. 2. The file name edit box is the initial focus. type in the name of the file. 3. Press shift+tab three times to move to the tree view. The folder that is selected is the current folder where the file is going to be saved. 4. If the current folder is the bank folder, you can just press alt+s to press the save button, or tab to the save button and press it. 5. If the current folder isn't the bank folder. press home to move to favorites at the top of the tree, and press the first letter of the folder (in this example b) until you select it. I invoked Microsoft Narrator, which I hadn't used before, and managed to use it to run Internet Explorer, download the latest JAWS 17 release, and start the installation. I switched off Narrator as soon as I started the JAWS installation, so I didn't discover without help that, while installing, the system had switched to the lock screen. Also, after the reboot required as part of the installation process, I was again at the lock screen and needed to supply credentials. It's possible that Narrator would have worked at the lock screen after the reboot, but I didn't test it in that situation. There was no beep or other auditory cue to indicate that the system had rebooted successfully. Now to the inevitable questions. Where would I find the best description currently on offer of the Windows 10 desktop and start menu? I also noticed that Alt-Tab only cycled through the two most recently opened windows. Have others experienced this result, and if so, is there a solution or alternative if you want to switch between any of your open windows/applications? I installed Firefox and configured it as the default browser. Since Microsoft Office is installed, I set Outlook as the default e-mail application. I expect to have more issues and questions as I try to turn this system into an effective work environment. However, I'll try to repay any advice by helping others on this and other lists as I try to do whenever I have knowledge or insight to share. [JAWS-Users] Windows 10: Edge is now used for web search results from taskbar search box.
In windows 10, if you open the start menu, type some search terms, and open a web search result, then until a few days ago, it used to open the search in your default browser. The same applied if you were using Cortana, and it didn't know the answer to your request. However, Microsoft have changed this so these now open in the Edge browser, irrespective of which browser you have set as your default browser. Unfortunately, Edge is not accessible using Jaws or Window Eyes, though it is at least partially accessible using NVDA or narrator. This seems like a very surprising decision by microsoft, to make this change before Edge is accessible by users of all the major screen readers. Most of the toggle switches read correctly, but some didn't, including the one you gave as an example. 2. When the toggle switch was read incorrectly: if the toggle switch was in fact off, it was read as on; if the toggle switch was in fact on, then it's state was not read. 3. The toggle switches which were read incorrectly, are as follows: a. In system, notifications & actions, all the toggle switches in the show notifications from these apps section. b. In Privacy. In any of the categories on that page where there are a series of toggle switches for specific apps, for example, choose apps that can use your location. c. In Update & security, backup. I was able to switch back to Jaws 16 and show them that Jaws 16 just said button, which means the button is off. I would then turn Jaws 17 on, and it said, Toggle switch on. So this is a very important issue, a lot of Jaws users just use Jaws 17 on their w-10 computers. After yesterday’s update to w-10, Jaws 17 will read the opposite information to them while in the settings area of w-10 concerning the status of the buttons, weather they are on or off. As you can imagine, this is not a good thing, they will think the button is set to off, but it is on instead. I have been a long time user of Jaws, however, I am a little disappointed in the response of the person from your technical support line. She was a bit rude, she talked down to me, she did not have, or use a w-10 computer. I patiently explained to her, that I ran a w-10 and Jaws computer group. Hi Joanne, although you can't disable the ribbons, there are at least a couple of ways of changing the view setting which don't involve using the ribbon. The first is to use shortcuts. Press ctrl+alt+5 for a list view, and press ctrl+alt+6 for a details view. (Note these shortcuts were ctrl+shift+number in windows 8 and 8.1). The second is that with no items selected in the items view (you can press ctrl+spacebar to deselect an item if necessary), you can open a context menu, which contains a view sub menu. When I hit alt V hoping to see status bar, list, etc., I see lower ribbon and something about panes and I am really upset that I can't get rid of these things and go back to the ability to sort by details or list, etc. Can these ribbons be disabled? However I was given a product key (just like a windows operating system key), so I can reinstall it if I have to rebuild my computer. When I press the applications key on the short cut and enter on open option, nothing happens either. I also tried to choose the choice about you being the administrator and it throws me back to the desktop. I have a Twitter account, and I really want to use TheQube the client for Twitter. Hi Mike, that's strange. In all the articles I've come across, and in Microsoft's help, a OneDrive folder is shown at the same level as your personal folder and This PC. I've no idea why it's not there in your case. If the OneDrive folder is present at that level in the hierarchy, it means that you can get to it by pressing alt+d to move to address bar, type onedrive, and press enter, which is quite convenient. I think there is confusion between the two cases of lists and documents. In the case of a list, where multiple items can be selected, to select from the current item to the start of the list, press shift+home. Similarly to select from the current item to the end, press shift+end. In the case of a document: 1. to select from the start of the document up to, but not including the current character, press ctrl+shift+home. 2. to select from the start of the line up to, but not including the current character, press shift+home. 3. to select from the current character to the end of the document, press ctrl+shift+end. 4. to select from the current character to the end of the line, press shift+end. Pressing LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW moves the playback backward or forward by one twentieth of the length of the track. If you add SHIFT or CTRL to these keystrokes, then the distance moved becomes one four hundredth or a fifth of the length of the track respectively. Hi Dwight, On windows 8, unfortunately windows defender doesn't appear in the notification area, making it harder to check its status. However, if it's running and it detects problems, then I think you'll get notifications about this. You can open windows defender by pressing windows key to go to the start screen, type all or part of windows defender and press enter. On the home tab, the status of windows defender is shown, but I can't figure out how to get Jaws to read it. (but see below). On the Settings tab there's a check box to indicate whether run-time protection is switched on. Back to Windows defender status. You can easily user narrator to read it, without having to turn Jaws off: 1. Open windows defender. The initial focus in the scan button on the home tab. 2. Press ctrl+windows Key+U to start narrator. 3. Press caps lock key + right arrow to move to the next item, which is normally the status, and should read your pc is being monitored and protected. 4. press ctrl+windows key + U to close narrator. If you want to you can pin windows defender to the taskbar: when it's window it open, press windows key + T until you get to the taskbar button for windows defender, open its context menu, and choose pin this program to the taskbar. Hi Virgil, If you search in windows explorer in windows 7, then you can use wildcard characters. You can use the search box, to search the current location: 1. press ctrl+e to move to the search box. 2. type in your search terms, for example draft*.* 3. tab to the items view which displays the results. Often, the files you will be looking for will be in one of your libraries: this includes the folders my documents, my music etc. If you open windows explorer from the button on the taskbar, then windows explorer opens with the libraries folder as the current location. Alternatively, press windows key + e to open windows explorer with computer as the current location, press alt+d to move to the address bar, type libraries, and press enter. If you know more exactly where your files are, then set that as the current location. Hi Steven, I assume you mean windows media player 12 on windows 7. In windows media player, if you open the context menu of a track, then open the add to sub menu, then a number of play lists are shown on this sub menu. Unfortunately, only the last eight of so playlists which have been created are shown. However, the last item on the menu is additional playlists, and if you open this, you can select any playlist in dialog. As an alternative, you can: 1. select the playlist, and choose play from its context menu. The items in the playlist are then placed in the currently playing list (which is on the right side of the screen). 2. You can add tracks to this now playing list by opening the context menu, open the add to sub menu, and choosing playlist. The shortcut for this is ctrl+7. 3. When you've finished adding tracks, tab to the save list button, and press it. Alternately, press alt+s. David. original message: Using wmp 11 and windows 7. Somehow, my ability to add items to my play list are no longer working. The playlist name which is dit appears in the playlist at the top of wmp right before the music but the playlist name is not in the context menu like It used to be. I have done everything. Rebuilt the data base, troubleshooting media player and reset to defaults. I have tried all kinds of things from Google and people say that they hate the program and that Microsoft didn't test it properly before release. Hi John, I think that in a new message window, the shortcut alt + b shows/hides the bcc edit box in many of microsofts email programs. Hi Lenny, Although there's no search box on the windows 8 start screen, if you start typing, then a search pane automatically appears, and your text is entered into a search box in this search pane. Jaws then automatically reads the first search result, just like it does in windows 7 or vista. Concerning your other question about finding the downloads folder, you can search for it from the start screen, but you have to type in the complete name. Hi Teressa, just to clarify the use of windows key + q. This keystroke is primarily used for searching within an active window 8 style app. For example, if the news app is open, then if you press windows key + q, type in some search terms and press enter, then the contents of the news app is searched. However, if a windows 8 app is not active and you press windows key + q, then the search defaults to apps, programs, other items pinned to the start screen, + libraries and a small number of folders, including the downloads folder. But if you want to search for apps, programs, and so on, it's better to just press the windows key to move to the start screen, and start typing. Hi David, unfortunately I'm unaware of where to find all the shortcuts for windows 8. I looked the up the shutdown shortcut in the windows 8 inside out book, which I don't think contains many others. In fact it didn't have the correct shortcut, as it was changed in windows 8 rtm, and I had to check the options for shutdown using the command line. Hi David, you can send stuff to the desktop in windows 8, it just takes more steps. For programs, if you search from the start screen, open its context menu and choose open file location, you can create a shortcut from there. For details see the additional tasks section of this guide to the start screen: http://goo.gl/GwlKh For items in the control panel it's even more steps. If you search for settings using windows key + w, then there's no context menu to open the file location. So what you have to do is first pin the control panel item to the start screen. To do this, in file explorer, in the tree view, move to the control panel, then move down the tree to the control panel item that you want. Open its context menu and choose pin to start. The item will now be listed when you search for programs from the start screen, and so you can proceed as in the case of programs. David. original message: Thank you for trying never the less. Hi David, just a quick post script. In both windows 7 and 8, an alternative to putting shortcuts to control panel items on the desktop is to make use of jump lists. Pin the control panel to the task bar, then in its jump list, pin the items which you use regularly. You can use first letter navigation in a jump list, so it's quick to find what you want. Hi, if you want a shortcut for shutdown in windows 8, you could use the following text: shutdown /s /hybrid /t 0 Note that including /hybrid is so that you get a fast start following the shutdown and this is specific to windows 8, and /t 0 means that the shutdown is immediate, whereas the default is 30 seconds. Hi Karen, the problem is that Jaws reads one of these radio buttons as not checked, even if it is both visibly checked and the behaviour of google search indicates it is checked. NVDA has the same problem. The following works on this computer: 1. move to the first option, only when my computer is fast enough. 2. press enter to go into forms mode. 3. down arrow to never show instant results. This will now be checked even though jaws says it isn't. 4. press numpad plus to come out of forms mode. 5. move to the save button and press it. Note that on the google home page, I can still find a link for screen readers to turn off instant searches at the top of the page. David. original message: Well, everything suggested hasn't worked so far. I've turned on forms mode at the never use google instant and left mouse, spacebar, and enter don't do a thing. Unless I'm supposed to do something different like shift spacebar or insert enter, it won't check. I turned on the html elements with insert+f8 and still couldn't check it. GRRR! I've got jaws 14 latest, win 7, and now google wants to make me crazy. I managed, after some effort, to open the settings page in google. There's a set of buttons for when to use google instant. Fine, but when I am on the never use google instant spacebar, enter, and the left mouse button don't do a thing other than send me into forms mode! I tried with the jaws cursor and the left mouse button and nothing happened. Any suggestions?
