[JAWS-Users] stop :space marker" from being spoken
I am using JAWS 16 and Word 2013. When I navigate through a Word document JAWS speaks “space marker” between each word. I looked in the verbosity settings but did not find a setting that appears to control this. Does anyone no how to shut this off? Thanks, Rich W. [JAWS-Users] Writing Checks
With “Just Write Checks” you can go to the check writing function and just type in the date, pay to, dollar amount and memo without entering any other information. I use JWC just to print checks. I don’t use it to track balances or accounts etc. Ibought preprinted checks with the bank info already printed on them. If, you don't want them just press the delete key and Wham!!! I save a contact with control + shift + C. Using this method you need to have the address on the clip Board . Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling NVDA
Thanks so much! - Original Message - From: "Scorpio" To: Sent: Saturday, October 19, 2013 9:58 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling NVDA Hi Rich, there are various ways to accomplish this task. The temporary way is to bring up the application manager using control+shift+escape, ensure that you are in the processes tab by using control+tab to move through the tabs, tab to the list of processes currently running on your computer, and, press the letter N to move directly to NVDA. The good thing is that Windows 7 offers a simple view of your processes, so you'll know exactly what they are. NVDA is labeled as NVDA, so, when you land on it, press alt+E to stop the process. A dialog box will ask you to confirm your descision, so simply press enter on the yes button, and the process will shut down. In any case, whether it's NVDA or Narrator, the press of the N key will identify the culprit. One thing you should beware of is that you end the process on the correct NVDA. This may be trivial to you, but I'll sometimes get mistaken when my screen reader reads out NVDA and NVDIA, as my speech for functionality is quite high, so I tend to overlook small things like the I inserted just before the A in NVDA. This process you should leave alone, as this is your graphics card process, and your computer, and possibly Jaws may need it to run. In any case, if it is NVDA, make sure that your screen reader actually says NVDA, and not NVDIA. Once it's shut down, press your Windows key+R to bring up the run dialog box, and type the word msconfig in the edit field and press enter. In the resulting dialog box, press control+tab to go to the services tab. Once there, tab to the list of programs, though this may not be necessary as your screen reader should place you directly on the services tab. Once there, arrow through the services looking for the application, NVDA or Narrator and uncheck the box accompanying it. Again, make sure you uncheck the box for NVDA and not NVDIA. Once this is done, press control+tab again to go to the start-up tab, and see if you find the program in that tab as well. You shouldn't, but better safe than sorry. If you do find it there, simply uncheck the box that corresponds to it and tab to the apply key. Press the spacebar, then shift+tab to the ok button and press the spacebar once more. At this point, you may or may not be presented with a dialog box asking you to re-start your computer. Regardless of whether you are presented with one or not, re-start your computer to make sure the change took effect. Once your computer comes back up, you'll be presented with a dialog box letting you know that you're currently running your computer in selective start-up mode, simply tab to the checkbox that says, don't show me this dialog box, or start the configuration manager when I boot into Windows, check this box, than tab to the ok button and press the spacebar to make it go away. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Hope someone's got your hand, luckily the list does. :) Here are a few things. 1. If you have windows sixty four, you'll need that version of jaws. Other then that, you can install programs as you need them, and there are two folder paths. The first says c:\Program files. Easy this is where all your sixty four bit programs, if you have them, are found. IE. has a sixty four bit program if i remember right. The other folder path is c:\program files\86 or something like that. All this means is this is where your 32 bit programs are put. so all of this probably confusing language to tell you, just pay attention to where things are installed, but usually programs know where to install themselves. If you are a little bit better at computers then I'm thinking, I hope I haven't insulted your intelligence. Re: [JAWS-Users] Quotes, Stopping Jaws From Reading Them
I think you could also go in to dictionary manager and replace quotes with silence, by using the space bar as the replacement word. Rich. - Original Message - From: "Mike B." To: "Jaws-Users List" Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2013 12:07 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Quotes, Stopping Jaws From Reading Them Hi Susie Q, Follow the steps below but, in the steps below the, apostrophy, is used as the example. In your case insert quotes for apostrophy. You can change how Jaws speaks the apostrophy in the Settings Centter default all applications by doing the following: 1. Press Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to open the Settings Center, & press, Control, shift, + D, to open default all applications. 2. Arrow down to, Punctuation closed & press right arrow to open. 3. Arrow down to customize punctuation & press the spacebar to open. Don't press enter here, if you press enter instad of the spacebar, the Settings Center will close. 4.A. When making changes in the customize punctuation list, if you do not want Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the " all " selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down through. They are none, some, most, & all. In these selections they work backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose " none " for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the " all " radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs. 4.B. After you pressed the spacebar on customize punctuation, you are now in a list of punctuation marks. Arrow down the list and when you have the punctuation mark you want to change highlighted, tab 1 time to the radio buttons that I mentioned earlier. 5. Keeping in mind what I mentioned earlier about these choices working backwards, select the box in this list, in your case not wanting any apostrophy's spoken, choose the all button. 6. Now, if you want to make a change to another punctuation mark, shift tab back to the list and highlight a different punctuation mark, tab back to the radio buttons and select the box you prefer. 7. After you are done making your changes tab to okay and press the spacebar. 8. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your changes & close the Settings Center. Now, I hope that you are not as confused as I am after typing all of this. LOL Hope this has helped. Take care. Mike This email was sent from my, iBarstool. When I go in to control panel and add new hardware, I see a bunch of USB items with useless labels. I've looked through the items in the "C" drive but nothing looks like the device The software has been installed, and I hear the "ding" when I plug the different devices in. I assume that whenever a device is plugged in to the USB, I would see it listed as "F" drive or something like that, in "my computer". I don't see anything listed when I hit insert F 10 or 11 either. Thanks for any help. I don't have this problem on my other PC that is XP home. Yes, the devices are turned on. I mentioned earlier that I have a USB hub in that port and that does not show up, other than in the "add hardware" list. - Original Message - From: "Mike B." [JAWS-Users] Help using Dropbox. Please.
Hi all, I have XP and 14 and Internet Explorer 8. I've just downloaded "Dropbox". I'm not sure how to use it. I copied and pasted everything that was in "My Documents" in to Dropbox. It took a while. My assumption is that Dropbox will keep all of these files/folders in the "cloud" and I could retrieve them from another computer or if I had a crash in the future. I'm not sure how to automatically save all of my e mails on to dropbox. The Dropbox site had a link to use the most current version of a browser. Is that necessary? Rich, I save emails first to my docs, then after the flash drive is inserted in it's port*USB* usually, I then find that email I saved, I then press Alt N,R if it's the sea gate, if it's the thumb drive it's L for name of the thing which is a Lexor or however it's spelled. This copies it to that drive. The alt N is shortcut key for send to, the R is removable drive F for my computer, note this might be different on yours, but the process should be the same. I am only using the Recipes folder as an example but, if you're going to save emails from different folders in OE it would be easier to make folders with the same titles in My Documents to keep them in the same order, so to speak. Here are the steps: Using Outlook Express below is 1 set of steps on how to save an email to the Recipe folder in your My Documents folder. 1. With the email you want to save highlighted / selected, press Alt + F, for the file menu, arrow down to save as, & press enter. Or press Alt + F, then press the letter, A. 2. A dialogue opens & you can change the name of the message here, if you want. 3.A. Tab 1 time to the save as combobox & right here this is where you choose which format you want to save the email as. Your choices are Mail *.eml, Text file *.txt, & Unicode Text File *.txt. Personally I save email in both .EML & .TXT formats but, you can't save them in both formats at the same time so, you have to save the email 2 times, once in each format. 3.B. We will use the .EML format for now. So, you are in the save as combobox, arrow down to Mail *.eml, tab 3 times to the save in combobox, arrow up or down to the My Documents folder, with the My documents folder highlighted, tab 3 more times to, folder view list view. This is a list of folders in your My Documents folder. 4. Arrow down to your Recipe folder & press enter to open the folder, now tab to the save button, & press the spacebar. Your recipe has now been saved in your Recipe folder. If you want to save this same email as a text file, your Recipe folder has already been selected so, you don't have to navigate to the Recipe folder. 5. Press Alt + F, then press the letter, A, tab 1 time to the save as combobox, press the letter T, for text file or arrow down to the Text File *.txt option, tab 1 time to save, & press the spacebar or enter. When you are in the save as combobox you can use first letter navigation instead of arrowing to your format of choice. Go look in your recipe folder to see if your messages have been saved the way you want them saved. Saving email outside of your email client takes some practice & getting used to but, it is well worth the extra work. If your email client was to become corrupted for whatever reason, having your email saved outside you won't lose your emails. Personally I don't have any emails saved in Outlook Express. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word with too much verbage.
This seemed to have worked. The "all format" was checked and after unchecking it the document read without the announcements. Thanks again! Rich - Original Message - From: "Brian Lee" To: Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word with too much verbage. Hello Rich, Here are a couple things to check out in Word and in the JAWS quick settings: If you are using a version of Word earlier than 2007 then use Alt+T to bring up the tools menu. Use up arrow key to the options menu item and press enter key. Use CTRL+Tab until focus moves to the View tab of the dialog box. Use tab key across the various options and if the option for paragraph marks is checked then use spacebar to remove the checkmark. Also confirm that the checkbox for Show All or Show All formatting isn't checked. (I am not at a system with a version of Word earlier than 2007 on it so I am trying this from memory). Tab to the Apply button if there is one and use spacebar on it. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar. If there is no Apply button then just use the OK button. If you are using Word 2007 or later then use Alt+F and then use up arrow to the Options item and press enter key. Use down arrow key to the Display tab. Use tab key across the choices and make sure the Paragraph Marks checkbox isn't checked. If it is then use spacebar to remove the checkmark. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar. To check recent changes made in JAWS that might be affecting the reading of text use JAWS key with V and tab to the tree view. Type the word Last quickly or press L until you get to the Last Changed Settings item. Use down arrow to hear the recent changes made in JAWS. If you find an item that might have affected the JAWS behavior then you can tab to the Search box and find the item to change back to the setting you want. Take care. [JAWS-Users] Strange JAWS and address book with O E.
Hi all, Last night, on my home computer, I sent a message to JAWS by going in to my contacts/address book in O E. While in my JAWS folder, I saw my message. I also saw a response from a non JAWS user. It was a web site that I had used earlier to purchase a battery. Has anyone seen my e mail regarding Microsoft word and too much information? Is there anyway that a name in the address book does not have the proper e mail address attached to it? I've had problems contacting JAWS in the past, including directly clicking the web/e mail site while on the JAWS help page. Thanks for any response. Rich - Original Message - From: "Flor Lynch" To: Sent: Wednesday, May 08, 2013 3:58 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing block sender in O E. So, how many times have you tried removing the blocked sender? Like, how many email addresses does the blocked sender have (to your information/knowledge)? And, although the sender appears blocked, is s/he actually still blocked? (You might look in some obvious place for a message sent by them. If you have any messages from them in your Deleted items, restore them to your message list.) Tangentially - although it may not be, have you got some additional message rule in place that might be deleting or removing their messages - before they are downloaded? Almost finally, it may be that your OE is corrupted in some way, although I've never heard before of this problem being due to such. Now, Google is your friend here, as in many other hard cases, so you might want to think a bit and come up with a suitable search for your problem to do on Google - like: blocked sender removed but still on blocked senders list - something like that. And now finally, all other things being equal, you will (or may still) find messages from your blocked sender in your Deleted items folder, where they are put when the sender is blocked. - Original Message - From: "Rich Hamel" To: Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2013 6:52 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing block sender in O E.
