I learned the ribbons from Jaws Help and extra training files early on and being able to type control E and have text centered for example instead of finding it in menus or even on the ribbons worked and was faster. Production was a keyword in my employment so the shortest way to accomplish something was a byword. I can see using the virtual ribbons for newbies or for someone who does not have to be concerned about time constraints. They were added for good reason for many users. I am not saying they should never be used, but, I do suggest one learn the ribbons and then decide which works best for their needs. The help system (not installed on my current computer because I can't figure out why Windows 10 won't allow me to get them off the CD) (have not tried too hard) are extremely well written and narrated. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007 Colours
Hi. Using Word 2010, after opening the font dialog, I tab four times to "Color," where JAWS verbalizes something like "No color selected." I then down arrow once, then right-arrow once. Now I'm in a table of many colors. I navigate it with the arrow keys. It's at least five columns wide. I find it helpful to check what color number I'm on, which I do by pressing JAWS key+tab. This way of getting to the table, which I figured out by long trial and error, must sound arbitrary, but it works for me. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of HICKS, Steven (ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST) Sent: Monday, January 30, 2017 4:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007 Colours Hi friends, Does anyone know how the colour dialog works in Microsoft Word, I can't seem to find too many colours when I highlight some text then use the right Windows key and select the font. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 And Auto text
Hello Steven, I am using Word 2013 but if I remember correctly working with auto text in Word 2010 is the same or at least very similar. To create an auto text you first select the text you want to be included. After selecting the text use Alt with F3 and a dialog box appears. In the name field of the dialog box type whatever text you want for a name but remember that this is the text you will use when inserting your auto text. In other words, if you type the first four letters of the name into a document and then press enter key everything you selected will be inserted into the document. For example, if I select my entire home address, phone number and Email address, I might name it MyHomeAddress. In that example if I type Myho and press enter key my entire home address will be inserted into the document. After the name field are some other controls but you usually don't need to change these unless you are saving to a different template than the normal template, saving to a different gallery than auto text, creating a different category than General, etc. There is a combo box in this dialog box that lets you choose to insert content only, insert content in its own paragraph or insert content on its own page. Once the auto text is created you can insert it by typing the first four letters of the auto text name and pressing enter key. Auto text is a gallery in quick parts. Press Alt followed by N followed by Q to go into quick parts. If you use up arrow key a few times you will find the building blocks organizer that you can open and use to insert or delete entries. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word Questions!
I am using MS-Word2010 and JAWS17 on a Windows7 computer. When I have a Word doc opened, I can use Insert+Page down and find out which page in the document I am on, how many pages in the document, and the total number of words in the entire document. However, there is a way to get additional details. Go to Review on the Ribbon, and navigate over to the 3rd item which is "Word Count". When you select it a dialog box comes up with a bunch of statistics about your document. If you want to hear the info again, you will need to use either Insert+B or your JAWS cursor. But wait, there is more. If you select some desired amount of text, and then select "Word Count" from the Ribbon you will get the statistics for only the text that is selected. Be aware that the number it provides for pages in this situation is how many pages the selected text takes up, not the page number of where the text is. I hope this makes sense. The keyboard command for this is Alt, R, W My final comment is that if you use Insert+Page Down when you have text selected, you will only get the page and word count info for the entire document. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word Questions!
Hello Helga, There are two ways I can think of to see in what page your are so far in your writing. One would be pressing Jawskey+page down. Jaws will read page number and other things. The other way is to press F6 in the function key row, around tree times and you will get to the status bas. You will hear the page number and other things. I hope this ehlps. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010
Thanks Mike, I was trying to find out how to change the default locations as well so I could move the templates on to a network share. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Michael B. Sent: 13 May 2015 15:34 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Hi Steven, The steps below are for Word 2013 but, should work for Word 2010 as well.: Before creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup of your normal.dotm template. 1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will asume you know how to do that. 2. Close Word. 3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm. Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create a new Normal.dotm template when you open Word. 4. Open Word. 5. Start a new blank document however you do that. 6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number styles, font, etc. 7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you set up the things you want files to be based on. 8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As. 9. In the filename box, type, Normal. 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want. 11. You can tab to the, Save button, press enter or, just press, Alt + S, then press, Alt + F4, to close the document the new Normal.dotm should be saved wherever your default save to is located, which is usually the Documents folder. Now find the newly created file put it into the Templates folder located here: C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates. You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new document. Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file, just go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word rebuild one from its default settings. For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want to save changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc. That setting is under the Save options Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010
Hi Steven, Try the following: When creating a new Normal template you should first make a backup of your normal.dotm template. These steps are for Word 2013 but , they should work for 2010 as well.there are some steps to follow 1. 9. Not sure what you'll see, but you may only see a list of folders to choose from, etc. Ignore that and tab to the Browse button. Press enter. 10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want. 11. In the filename box, type Normal and press enter. 12. Re: [JAWS-Users] microsoft word 2010 document margins
Kevin, I am sure that there are some shortcuts to perform this task, but I do not know what they are. However, you can go to the Page Layout tab and tab down one time to find the margins group box. Just tab up or down to find the setting that you would like to apply to the document, and escape out of this section. If you keep tabbing, you will find the Custom Margins section, and can use this to set up the margins differently than one of the default settings. Hello Jim, Are you talking about word documents? If you are I am using word 2007 and you can press the alt key while in the document and arrow to the right until you hear review and down arrow until you then hear protect sub menu. Press right arrow on the sub menu to open it and you will find a protect document button I believe this button when pressed will effectively make your document a read only document. I hope this helps Sincerely, Ryan West -Original Message- From: jim Sent: Monday, March 31, 2014 9:47 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft word 2010 How do you set a document to the read only mode? Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft word 2010
Hi Mike: Here is the easiest way I have learned to save a document in read only mode in word 2010. 1. press Alt+f: 2. Arrow down to the Info tab and press enter. 3. Tab one time to protect document and press enter. 4. Press enter on mark as final. 5. Press enter to close dialog. 6. Press enter to close this second dialog message. 7. Press escape twice to go back to your read only document. Now when you open up your document it is in read only mode, and when you close it, no save dialog comes up, word just closes. If there is a shorter way to do this please let me know... thanks to all of you for your help... -Original Message- From: Mike B. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Autotext Shortcut Keys
Hello Steven, Select the text that you want to make into an autotext entry and then use Alt key with function key 3. If you want to use the defaults of the resulting dialog box, (which include adding the entry to the Normal template so it is available in all new documents based on that template and using the autotext gallery) press enter key to create the autotext entry. To use the autotext entry type in the first few characters of the autotext entry and press function key 3. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word
For clarity sake, here are some definitions that might be helpful. Header - This is information that is placed in the top margin of a page. Headings - This refers to a formatting style that you can apply to the various levels of titles in your document. For example, the chapter title might always be placed 2 inches down from the top margin and be centered in a large font in all capital letters and bolded. The section headings might be placed at the left margin in the same font size as your text, all capitalized bolded and underlined. Sub-headings might be in the same size as the document text the initial letter of each word capitalized and bolded. What I have described here is just an example. MS-Word offers a number of pre-set styles for headings. Many of us are also familiar with referring to headings based on their level in your outline, such as Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, etc. So all Heading 1's will all have the same attributes, but they will be different from all other heading levels used. Of course, Heading 2's will have their own set of attributes, as will all other heading levels that you use. Footer - This is information that is placed in the bottom margin of a page. Footnotes - Back in the day of WordPerfect this is what we called the notes that you referenced in the body of your text. These were placed above the bottom margin of the page where they were referenced. These impacted how much text you could fit in the body of the document for that page. The more footnotes you had the less room there was for your document text on that page. I cannot remember what these are called in MS-Word. End Notes - Rather than having the footnotes at the bottom of the page where there are referenced, all of the notes are placed at the end of the document and are numbered sequentially throughout your document text. Comments - The use of comments is equivalent to making hand written notes in the margins of your document. MS-Word gives you the option to have comments printed out with your document or not. When I was grading papers this was a great way to provide feedback to my students. However, since Office 2007, JAWS and comments have not played well together. Mark-Up - When you have Mark-Up turned on in MS-Word, all edits are shown in some type of visual representation or another. With JAWS 12 and older, I have not been successful in making use of Mark-Up when collaborating on a document with others. At work, many people I work with rely on Mark-Up. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word
Annette, Thank you for the definitions. The header information was indeed where I needed it to be. I had my sighted fiancé take a look. Unfortunately it seems as though we can no longer route JAWS to PC and scroll up and see that information. Hopefully in the future this returns back to its previous state. Otherwise many people are just going to have to trust that the information is in the header. I can't speak for the footer since I have not had to use it this semester. As for now though the problem is taken care of. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Annette Carr Sent: Sunday, September 1, 2013 9:15 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word For clarity sake, here are some definitions that might be helpful. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Or JAWS 14 Setting
Hello Guys and girls, I noticed that no one knew the answer to my problem I was and continue to have with the Office Suite. In a way I am glad because this means I am not alone with this problem. This one may be a little easier to tackle though. Is Office 2010 and Word 2010 one in the same or are they different. I noticed when saving the Word documents they save with a DOCX file extension. Reason I ask is my dad purchased a laptop the other day for them to use. When purchasing the laptop they also purchased the Office suite 2010 for my mom to use. My dad mentioned the other day having to go to office.com to download a program. If this is the case and Word 2010 and Office 2010 are not one In the same then perhaps this is not a JAWS 14 problem, but maybe all I need to do is go and download the office program. My fingers are crossed anyways. Take care and as always all help is greatly appreciated. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Josh Sent: Friday, July 26, 2013 1:43 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Or JAWS 14 Setting Hello to everyone, I am using Microsoft Office Suite 2010 that includes excel, outlook, powerpoint, Access, publisher, etc. I noticed though that Microsoft Word 2010 which is also included is not acting like previous versions of Office. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2010 Or JAWS 14 Setting
Hello Josh, Here are a couple things you might want to check out in Microsoft Word if you haven't already done so. If you are not working in print view then switch to that view by using Alt with CTRL and P. Once in print view go under the View tab of the ribbon by using Alt followed by W and then using tab key to the lower part of the ribbon. Use tab key until you find the One page button and press enter or spacebar to make it active. Go back under the View tab and see if the zoom is at 100%. If not then use the Zoom button and adjust the zoom. I have heard that for some reason the print preview settings in Word 2010 can affect the actual type of view being used in the document. Press Alt with F and then down arrow to the Print tab. Use tab key across to the print preview area. Zoom should be around 75% (mine in Word 2013 shows 76%). I have also noticed that in Word 2013 after using print view that the page number just previewed keeps being read when using insert key with number pad 3. Using F6 and reading the page number on the status bar gives correct information. I am not sure if this is just for Word 2013 or not but if you use the print preview and then the status line to announce page number and you keep getting the same number announced try using the F6 and seeing what page number is showing on the status bar. If the problem continues you might consider doing a repair on Word. Go into Programs and Features in your control panel and find Microsoft Office 2010 in the list. Use application key and find the Change option. Use that and you will get a repair button that you can use. You will need to wait for a while as it takes some time for the repair process. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word with too much verbage.
Hello Rich, Here are a couple things to check out in Word and in the JAWS quick settings: If you are using a version of Word earlier than 2007 then use Alt+T to bring up the tools menu. Use up arrow key to the options menu item and press enter key. Use CTRL+Tab until focus moves to the View tab of the dialog box. Use tab key across the various options and if the option for paragraph marks is checked then use spacebar to remove the checkmark. Also confirm that the checkbox for Show All or Show All formatting isn't checked. (I am not at a system with a version of Word earlier than 2007 on it so I am trying this from memory). Tab to the Apply button if there is one and use spacebar on it. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar. If there is no Apply button then just use the OK button. If you are using Word 2007 or later then use Alt+F and then use up arrow to the Options item and press enter key. Use down arrow key to the Display tab. Use tab key across the choices and make sure the Paragraph Marks checkbox isn't checked. If it is then use spacebar to remove the checkmark. Tab to the OK button and use spacebar. To check recent changes made in JAWS that might be affecting the reading of text use JAWS key with V and tab to the tree view. Type the word Last quickly or press L until you get to the Last Changed Settings item. Use down arrow to hear the recent changes made in JAWS. If you find an item that might have affected the JAWS behavior then you can tab to the Search box and find the item to change back to the setting you want. Take care. [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word issue with 14.
Hi all. I have XP home. In word, sometimes when I use the up or down arrow to read a line, I hear, something like, 72 points or another number. How do you turn this feature off? Another question. I have had many strange issues with word. For example, it may not load until I restart the computer. Or, it may suggest starting up in safe mode. Or, when reading by line, it may read the line twice. Is there a way to search if something is corrupted. Or, are there any suggestions on all the settings that are good with JAWS users?. Thanks for all of the help. [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007
Hello Everyone, I have encountered an issue with my Microsoft Word 2007. It use to say blank to indicate a blank line. It now says Paragraph Mark or my fiance told me how to get it to stop that by pressing control shift and the number 8, but that makes the program even more annoying because now it says new line and repeats itself twice everytime I come across a new line. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this? All input will be greatly appreciated. Oh and I am using Jaws 13 latest version. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft Word 2007 Problem Resolved
Hello Everyone, I just wanted to let you all know I seemed to have resolved the problem. I restarted the computer and all seems to be working fine again. Apparently I was running Jaws too long and it wasn't liking it. - Original Message - From: Josh To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, July 02, 2012 11:34 PM Subject: Microsoft Word 2007 Hello Everyone, I have encountered an issue with my Microsoft Word 2007. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft word question. Turning Off Tab Control
Hi Rich, Try looking in the following places to see what you have checked. While in Word, go to tools, options, and on the view page, tab like crazy until you get to, All, and uncheck it, tab to OK, press the spacebar to save / close. There will be a lot of other checkboxes in there that you might want to uncheck as well. When I tried using Shift+Control+8 it didn't turn off the announcement of 1 inch etc. What it does do is hide and unhide formatting marks only, as Flor has said. To hide formatting in Word do this in the format menu, load Word. Press Alt+O for Formatting. Arrow up to Reveal Formatting, and press Enter. Tab to the box which says, Show all formatting marks, and uncheck that box. Then press Escape, and you will be out of the menus and back in the document. I haven't been keeping up with this thread totally so, let us know where you stand as far as what is, or isn't, working the way you want it in Word. Take care. Arrow down to, Capitalization and make sure this says, ignore. If it doesn't, press the spacebar until it does press enter to save the changes close. Hope this helps. Take care. Hey all; I think I have part of the problem solved. I went in to text processing then general, then indicate new line, right arrow to newline open, then down arrow to, user read text containing characters and unchecked it. Now, that's almost all of the issues I have, other than some small questions while in word. But I can live with these for now. Many thanks to the list. Rich, You can toggle paragraph marks with ctrl+SHIFT+8. Okay I will do some more investigating. Here is something strange to me. When I initially hit read line, i.e. insert up arrow, I hear normal and sometimes, 1 inch. The second time I hit the same command, on the same line, I do not get that response, but only the proper sentence. H. Thanks again. [JAWS-Users] Microsoft word question.
Hi all; I have XP and13.0. I just updated to 13.0 and when I am in Microsoft word, JAWS reads tabs, for example, when I am at the top of the page, I hear 1 inch. or, before a certain line I hear 1.5 inches. I am not sure where to turn this off. I can not get JAWS to announce the - symbol. Precise directions are appreciated. Oh, lately, I have sent messages to JAWS and they would not appear in my in box. So please, could someone reply. This would let me know if the message is going through. Any suggestion on the word and, sending issue is much appreciated.
