Can you convert your email format to HTML?  In Thunderbird my emails
come as HTML instead of plain text so copying is more accurate.

Hello Pam,

There are a couple things you might want to try.

First, instead of using CTRL V to paste the text try pressing the
application key, use down arrow to the paste options menu item. Use right
arrow and press enter key on the option to keep source formatting. If that
doesn't work due to your settings in Word or Outlook, try pasting using Alt
with CTRL and V. In the paste special dialog arrow down and choose to paste
as HTML.

I hope one of these methods work for you.

Take care.

Hi All,

I am trying to copy a large table from an email into a document in Word
2013. Using JAWS 18, I am copying it with the F8 key, and then pasting it
into Word with control plus v.

My issue is that it is not keeping the table format when it is pasted into
Word.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for how I can keep it formatted as a
table?

Thanks,

I had an issue with Excel 2010 with the latest 2018 build involving
arrowing up up down and across cells.  I am able to navigate with the
arrow keys but there's an annoying delay.  Switching to JAWS 18 solves
the problem  I have word from tech support taht my issue will be fixed
in the next update expected before the end of May.  Similar issues are
not exactly comparable of course, but both of our issues involve
navigating by arrow.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Some PDFs do not read properly

2018-05-29 Thread Jim Pursley
I occasionally experience the run on word issue you seem to be
describing.  It clears up when you change the reading format to the read
from the raw print stream option.  Control shift 5 gets you the reading
format list.  Arrow where you want to go.   Tagged readin format
sometimes does not behave properly either.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Have to get new MS office suite

2018-07-12 Thread Jim Pursley
We just upgraded to Office 365 from Thunderbird email client and Office 2010.
I don't do much with Word, but with O365 I didn't need to uninstall anything.
Just got a Microsoft account, bought the O365 home with 5 connections and so
far it's running pretty smoothly. I've never used Outlook, so I kept Tbird.
After a few days (I'll read the FS tutorial on Outlook I bought recently) I can
do everyday stuff like send, receive, forward, etc. Bottom line, I've not
found Office 2016 (which I downloaded) much different than 2010-especially for
Excel which I constantly use. I even see some benefits to Outlook over
Thunderbird. The exchange server we had to get with O365 works faster and more
reliably than our former server of the POP variety. So..kicking and screaming
I upgraded and survived with a growing smile on my face.

Hey Wayne.

I just upgraded from office 2010 32-bit to 2016 64-bit. I used 2016 before at
my old work and found that it worked really well with jAWS 18 except for the
semi-usual jAWS crashes, which I recently discovered seem less of an issue if
you stick to good ole' Eloquence. I do find that certain things, like the
spell-check, seems to work better in 2016.

I would upgrade to 2016 because it's the latest non-365 version and will
continue to be supported for quite some time.

I made a backup of my outlook data using the export feature. In the end, even
though I had to uninstall Office completely in order to install the new
version, those files were retained in my data folders and so I did not end up
needing to use the backup. The same should be true for you, but just backup the
folders anyway, just in case.

Well, it is here. I am getting notices from Microsoft that my MS Office 2007 is

everything again if I don't have to. I can upgrade through my school to

that I have not used. Any thoughts would be appreciated. On a related note I
currently have my emails sent to my MS Outlook 2007. If I upgrade will the

Re: [JAWS-Users] The Future of Jaws

2015-05-11 Thread Jim Pursley
I remember, in one of my professional iterations, the book Libraries In
The Year q2000 by a professor named Licklider. This was 1970 and
library studies departments at universities had begun to add
"Information Science" to their names. Come the mid 90's and UC
Berkeley's South Hall was no longer the home of the School of
Librarianship. It was the School of Networking and Machine Languages or
something of that ilk. The internet had all but gutted the basic
intermediary function of libraries. Licklider got the networking and
information retrieval functions and individualized education functions
right but he kept intact the basic structure and function of the library
(much as NLS is for us) with a lot of modern bells and whistles. He did
not predict the sweeping changes the internet has brought, followed by
wireless communication and now artificial intelligence/machine
learning. I don't think JAWS 100 or anything like it will exist. I
think that physical limitations will largely be overcome by the time
another 85 years or so passes. Mechanical sense organs or clones of
healthy living ones) will level the getting on with life playing field.
Look how much progress has been made since Helen Keller's day. If you
think that like the universe knowledge is expanding at an ever faster
rate then my simple ideas will surely be left in the dust. Yet I hazard
that we'll still be basically the humans we are, if we last another 85
years without a war to end all humans.

It's probably better to install JAWS updates from the Freedom Scientific
web site http://www.freedomscientific.com/JAWSHQ/JAWSHeadquarters01than
it is to download the patch that you get when you download updates from
the notices. Downloading from the FS site takes longer, but you get a
completely new version rather than a patch grafted on to your resident
version. Once you get to the main site, hit the downloads link and
follow instructions to your particular product - be careful to select
either 32 bit or 64 bit as appropriate - or perhaps like adobe the site
can tell what you have resident on your computer.

At the end of the download you will not get a set up wizard like you get
when you first download a new version. From my experience, the download
will maintain all of your JAWS settings.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Speaking of Office 2010?

I think Landa nailed it. As Microsoft Office became more complex, pull
down menus did not enable most users to see more than a few controls
without going to sub menus. Hence, the ribbon, which had been in use in
other software products, was adapted to replace much of the top line
apparatus. This said, not all ribbon controls are logical nor highly
visible either. e.g. page renaming in Excel comes under a layer called
cells. Fortunately, hot keys perform the most common functions in
office, bypassing the need to overheat the tab keys.

the upper ribbon to find the different tabs. If you press tab, you will be in
the choices for that ribbon. The tab key, in my opinion, is the most reliable
way to move from item to item on the lower ribbon. Control right and left arrow
is supposed to move you from group to group on the ribbon so that you can move
through the choices faster. You also have accelerators that will let you press
a series of letters to do things more quickly. Hope this helps a little. I know
sighted people who don't like it either because they don't know where things
are. On the other hand, I know people who love it because they can find obscure
options more quickly.

This was quite interesting. For two days there was a critical security
update for MS office 2010 that would fail every time. Finally I called the
accessibility support team. After two attempts they started running some
diagnostic and clean up tools. One of the first questions asked was if I
ever ran any registry cleaners. When I told him no he was glad to hear
that.
Then he tried it again and it failed. He then wanted to uninstall office
2010 and had quite a few problems. He ran some fix it tools and finally
was
able to uninstall it. We reinstalled and it took a long time to apply 39
critical updates. Every thing there is now working fine. As soon as it was
completed I created a restore point and started a system backup. We were
on
the phone for almost 2 hours.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Excel and JAWS

2015-06-30 Thread Jim Pursley
You can make JAWS read column, row heads or both. The following works
in Win7 and Excel 2013. Try it.
Put the PC cursor (I don't know if the JAWS cursor works here) in the
left most column cell and the top most row cell.

Insert v gets you to JAWS quick settings.
Arrow down, keeping the excel choice open.
To save time close all files you pass until you reach Workbook,
Worksheet and Region settings. Open it.

Pass a couple of choices until you reach Title Reading
Arrow down until you find Define name, column and row titles. Select On
for the current file.
Now arrow down a couple of choices to Title Detection. You can choose
rows, columns or both.

arrow down another line or two and spacebar until you hear OK.

Now go to your worksheet and your secondary reading voice will read the
titles for you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Excel and JAWS

2015-07-01 Thread Jim Pursley
From my experience, JAWS won't read the column and row headers
simultaneously. You have to scroll to hear the column and row headers.
Once you know the row you are in, then scroll across columns. The
keystroke method only reads columns or rows, not both. Insert v in
Excel to Workbooks, Worksheets and Regions then to Title Reading will
get your spreadsheet reading both columns and rows - but not both at
once. JAWS will only know where your headings are if you pointthe
cursor to the nexus of row and column headings.

2. Press the following key combination: INSERT+CONTROL+ALT+C
Jaws will respond with a message indicating that the reading for column
headings is engaged.

This setting can also be saved permanently by entering the Quick Settings
dialog, INSERT+V
1. In the Edit box, type "titles"
2. The first setting is one which defaults to off indicating that column and
row headings are to be read. The other options are for all spreadsheets or
this one alone.
Note: Before attempting these settings, make sure that your focus is on the
intersection of the first column and the first row.

Microsoft Office 2010 treats imported documents in a special way if they
originate on the Internet. The document is opened, but is placed in
something called "Protected View". Jaws will not read a document in that
state.

In this mode, if you use a Say All command, a message appears explaining
what Protected View is and why the document was handled that way.

To change from Protected View to an editable version, press Alt F and arrow
down to a button called "Allow Editing" and press Enter on that option.
Once the document has been altered in this manner, it will read normally.

It is recommended that the document be saved in the new editable format
since it will not remain in that condition if the user exits the document.

You can fix this easily by going into trust center settings, then arrow down
to protected view and tabbing to the various file types in that dialog box,
then, for each file type, unchecking all of the check boxes.

It would appear that Jaws is not reading the dialog box correctly, and so it
may read as check the box to allow editing, however, this is not the case,
and the boxes must be unchecked. Make sure you arrow down the list of file
types, then tabbing to the checkbox to uncheck it.

The checkboxes should read as "Save" and "Open", though only some of them
have the open checkbox, but again, you'll have to do this for all file
types.

Hope this helps.

without their knowledge or intervention. If you are happy with Windows

Tbird seems to be updating more frequently.

I haven't had an issue with Thunderbird reading e-mails after I got a

I had a heck of a time when the new page format was installed but
somehow I managed to find the accessible version. somehow I got the
accessible link to work. The accessible version is the print version
and works great, but does not have all site features like the alerts. I
recommend calling the web site tech group - customer service can connect
you - andwork through the steps to get the accessible version.

Bill pay is a snap, one reason why i don't change banks. Chase has a
nice feature which allows money to be eft'd to another person by
supplying an e-mail - and it's accessible. Bank of America's site is
accessible, too.

Hi. I'm trying to help a new JAWS user who is experienced with IE.
We've run into problems on the Citibank website. I don't have a
Citibank account, and so I can't log in. So, does anyone have thoughts
about the following three issues?

1. The website has a virtual assistant that seems to interfere
with JAWS. Can it be removed?

2. I notice on the log-in page a purported link for screenreader
users. However, I can't activate the link no matter what I try. Any
ideas?

3. Finally, is there more than one bill pay page? My friend
isn't recognizing the organization of the bill pay page he found. I
think this may be a misunderstanding, but I could be wrong.

I use Open Book most of the time to read scanned docs as well as
security protected docs. Best for really long docs, too, as JAWS OCR
may take some time to load. Open Book wipes out all links, though. Why
JAWS OCR does not wipe out links is a bit of a mystery as they both have
the same or similar OCR engines. Open Book may add some treatment that
JAWS OCR does not.

Hi Jim,

Here you go:
Hi All,

For those new to Adobe Reader DC, try the settings changes below to see if
they help with its performance.

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the
consequences of unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what
they have to say.

1. Open Adobe Reader DC from your desktop or start menu icons, go into
preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.

Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, Alt + E, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu
and open it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay
button, & press enter. You can now close the program & give it a try on a
PDF file.

Take care.

CheckAdd-ons as Mario suggested? Tbird sometimes crashes on me.
Deleting a bunch of sent messages seems to help. But Tbird crashing is
not your keyboard locking up. Are you losing focus? When it appears to
lock up, try turning the numpad key off and clicking the left click
button to the immediate right of the numpdad key button. Alternatively
you can click the left mouse button not on a link and the page will
refocus. I don't lose focus in tbird, but who knows? It could be possible.

Agree, Mario, about opening/response time. Version 45.2 seems to have
increased the time between clicking a message open for reading and JAWS
starting to read it. This said, I select to read in HTML so I've always
figured that HTML pages take awhile longer to load. But I thought Anna's

I'm using Win 7, JAWS 17 but your process should not be too different.

Hit the Windows key for the start menu and arrow down to all programs
sub menu. Arrow right then type the letter j to see if you have java on
your computer. If so, you'll see the name java with a sub menu. rRight
arrow again and hit check for updates to see if your java is up to
date. If you don't have java go to java.com and download it. So far as
I know the java program intereferes with nothing on my computer.

Then see if jaws will pronounce your virtual keyboard letters, which
will appear as one letter links. The process for writing on this
virtual keyboard is um dor do saco but I've been able do use it to log in.

On the other hand, it may be more direct for you to contact your bank or
visit the site. If you visit the site, do a control F for accessibility
or for screen reader. A lot of banks have accessibility protocols
including a simpler site, like Citibank for example.

On a personal note I hope you are well in Venezuela. The articles I
read portrays a country in crisis.

I guess Brazil is no cake walk either but at least it's on a gradual
path of improvement following some unfortunate political and economic
mismanagement by a government which had been in power too long. Too
bad, too, as Lula da Silva did some solid things for the working class
but his government was caught in several corruption scams, the biggest
one being lava jata, or the Petro Bras money skimming venture.

Shift plus control plus f works too. You can format cells
individually. You can also use the applications key to format cells.
Are you wanting to format an entire worksheet? I have no answer for
that one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] signing out of thunderbird

2016-10-11 Thread Jim Pursley
Let's figure you're in the inbox of one of your email addresses, email
A. Shift tab to the tree view (I employ the JAWS ribbon option)
through mailboxes to find your current email address. JAWS will say
your email address and announce open. Arrow to the left, JAWS
announcing email A closed. Arrow down and you should find your second
email address...assuming you've enabled it on Thunderbird.

Now reverse the process. Open your second email by arrowing to the
right and then arrowing down through the tree view. I find the method I
described faster than the easier way - (here it is)

From your email A in box press shift tab to the tree view. Arrow down
through your current email's boxes to your second email..then keep
arrowing down until you find the box you want and tab to it.

?Seems bit tricky but if you do it enough you'll get proficient.

Warning. If you tab a bit too far you might get something like Welcome
To Thunderbird. In that case just keep tabbing until you hear your
inbox and navigate from there.10/11/2016 10:23 AM, Tom wrote:

Confirming a subscription, I had to verify being human by completing a
"challenge". Selecting an audio challenge I needed to match several
choices with x boxes with a topic, such as fish stew and dance.

The audio challenge was in JAWS-readable text.

I checked appropriate boxes and passed - the third time around. A young
person with only a high school education may have had difficulty with
passing as fish stew included Italian and French stews most people could
not pronounce (cioppino).

Bottom line, though - the audio challenge was a refreshing change from
garbled sounds

Alt I for insert and then R for row. Be sure your cursor is placed on
the row below where you want your new row to be. In Excel 2010, Alt I
still works with a note to continue typing the key sequence of a
keystroke for Excel 2003. Be undaunted..Alt I, then R should get you a
new row. The cursor can be any place on the row below your new one.

To insert a column, type Alt I and then C. Be sure your cursor is to
the right of where you want your new column to be.

You can probably insert rows and columns using the ribbon menus, too,
but I find the quick keystrokes easier, as I use them frequently.

It's normal. The In Box is by default arranged by subject in ascending

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Dongle

2014-09-14 Thread Jim Pursley
From a conversation with Jim Ellsworth, as I recall it. Donggkles are
provided when JAWS users need repeat refreshes of authorizations.
the donggle essentially hardwires JAWS in current and future versions to
one's computer, avoiding the problem of authorizing with each upgrade.
It's not hard to see that the donggle, unless it has built in fraud
protection, could enable anyone to use JAWS without a license. So how
do I know? I had to request re-ups to my update authorizations twice in
the last six months due to computer issues. Yes, the donggle is
interesting. Anything to streamline the somewhat cumbersome
authorization process is welcome in my house.

No, George. but arguably a donggle would have prevented an
authorization lapse (probably) for your J14. Freedom Scientific is very

So how do I
know? I had to request re-ups to my update authorizations twice in the last
six months due to computer issues. Yes, the donggle is interesting.
Anything to streamline the somewhat cumbersome authorization process is
welcome in my house.

Hello All,

I purchased my SMA's the other day for 16 & 17 and tried to
purchase a Donggle. However, when I inquired about the Donggle I was
told that I had to fill-out a form and get approved for the purchase.
What is this form the sales person speaks of?. He said that he would
send it to me in an e-mail, but I never received it. I wanted to
inquire here about what it is before I start trying to follow up on
it. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Thunderbird and double speaking with jaws

2014-09-14 Thread Jim Pursley
Double or even triple speaking occurs when new messages arrive and I'm
out of Thunderbird but still have it opened. I've selected to be
informed by an audio sound and speaking detail when new messages
arrive. I just hit the control key to silence the pesky announcement,
but at least I can screen the new mail to see if it's something
demanding immediate attention or not.

Try the advanced setting..just in Thunderbird if you wish. Ins V is
specific to the location you are in when you use it.

I don't find the subject line in the body of a message per se. It's the
first thing JAWS reads. I've set my system for income and outgoing
e-mails to be in HTML, so it takes a few seconds to load the e-mail
message. If I get impatient, I just begin arrowing down to the first
message line, skipping everything else.

[JAWS-Users] HTML code appearing in articles on web pages

2014-11-30 Thread Jim Pursley
About a month ago, Mike B. posted how he used the JAWS Settings Center
to suppress JAWS reading of HTML code which appears on some web pages.

I experience the code in some newspaper and magazine articles -
Washington Post and NY Review Of Books for two.

I recall one fix, but I think there were two settings Mike changed.
Encountering the code on NYBooks.com I set JAWS to ignore inline
frames. Voila - no more code. But on another site, www.valuewalk.com,
the inline frames are used for content. So I reversed the setting. Am I
doomed to a life of toggling back and forth between the Settings Center
and my copy?

Am I missing another part of the fix?

Tks.

[JAWS-Users] More on HTML content infiltrating JAWS reading of web pages

2014-12-08 Thread Jim Pursley
I've found the JAWS setting center adjustment of Headers and Frames to
be less than ideal, as some of the sites I use have useful content in
their inline frames. My note to Freedom Scientific tech support on the
HTML infiltration issue is pending. I did, however, find a somewhat
acceptable fix on my own. My Open Book 9 will read the Washington Post
text, for example, without the HTML content. It's of course an extra
step for me to print to Open Book, but at least I don't have to seek the
end of the HTML frame to continue my reading.

I wonder if the issue is related to Google ads or to Javascript.

Regards,

Enhancements in JAWS 16.0.1722 (December 2014)
JAWS

   * You can now select text using a braille display in various edit and
document windows without the text being selected having to remain visible on
the screen. For example, if you are using a Focus display, press the LEFT SHIFT
along with a cursor router at the location where you want the selection to
begin, navigate through the document or Web page, and then press the LEFT SHIFT
along with a cursor router again at the location where you want to end the
selection. All text between these two locations is selected regardless whether
all the text is visible on the screen or not.
   * Added support for Quicken 2015 using new scripts provided by Intuit.
   * This update contains new drivers from Papenmeier which support their new
Braillex Live series of braille displays.
   * Pressing the LEFT SHIFT or RIGHT SHIFT button on a Focus braille display
now silences speech similar to pressing CTRL on a QWERTY keyboard.
   * Updated the Bookshare Book Search Research It lookup source to work with
the latest changes to the Bookshare.org Web site.
   * Addressed a customer reported issue with the Time Search Research It
lookup source not displaying the current time for the specified location.
   * If JAWS contracted braille translation is set to both input and output, the
Computer Braille start symbol, dots 4-5-6 followed by dots 3-4--6, is now shown on the
braille display in addition to the "computer braille" message being announced
to indicate when only Computer Braille can be entered into an edit field.
   * When using a braille display with JAWS in Structured Mode, resolved an
issue where it was sometimes necessary to pan left to read the information
associated with a control, such as the name of a button or contents of an edit
field, even if it all fit on the display.
   * Resolved multiple issues with configuring punctuation levels for
individual languages in a voice profile using the Voice Adjustment dialog box
as well as changing the punctuation level through Settings Center.
   * In response to customer feedback, improved JAWS performance with MathML
expressions containing multiple tables.
   * Resolved an issue where the wrong colors were being reported when
pressing INSERT+5 in WordPad.
   * Pressing INSERT+T in WordPad in Windows 8.1 now speaks the window title
as expected.
   * Addressed a customer reported issue with the Theophilos Bible program
where JAWS was not automatically reading the selected item when navigating the
combo box to choose a book.
   *   When using CTRL+WINDOWS Key+ALT+PAGE UP or CTRL+WINDOWS Key+ALT+PAGE DOWN to permanently
increase or decrease the speech rate, addressed an issue where JAWS was not saying
"faster" or "slower."
   * A customer reported that when reading certain abbreviated words
containing periods, such as Mr. and Mrs., JAWS was incorrectly speaking the
period. This has been resolved.
   * On the Windows 8 Logon screen, resolved an issue where "password" was
being announced three times when the Password field gained focus.
   * Addressed a customer reported issue where JAWS would not read as
expected in the calendar that can be accessed from the System Tray by pressing
SPACEBAR on the clock.
   * When installing an application that uses a Nullsoft Install System
installer, an issue was resolved where JAWS would not announce the checked or
unchecked state of items when asked to choose the components to install. This
occurred on 64-bit versions of Windows.
   * In Windows 8.1, an issue was addressed where JAWS would not always speak
the correct window title in Windows Explorer while navigating with TAB and
SHIFT+TAB.
   * When pressing INSERT+DOWN ARROW to begin a Say All, resolved an issue
where there was sometimes and extra-long pause before JAWS began reading. This
was primarily observed in applications like NotePad, WordPad, and HJPad.
   * When using Settings Center to configure the punctuation level for
Vocalizer Expressive and SAPI 5 voices for languages other than English,
resolved an issue where the current voice rate and volume were not retained.
   * Addressed a reported issue with the German release of JAWS where Alva
braille displays were not being listed in the Synthesizer and Braille Manager.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] What To Do when JAWS Won't Start Up

Hi everyone. I'm using a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and JAWS 15. Today, I
tried turning it on and waited for the Windows sound to come and for JAWS to
be announced, but neither happened. I tried doing a hard reset but still the
same thing happened. I don't remember doing anything on the laptop before
shutting it down last time that would have caused this to happen, but wonder
if anyone can suggest some things for me to try. I can't remember how many
times I have to tab, for example, to get to # start-up options or whether I
have to up- or down arrow to get to the right one.

Thanks.

Michele

Re: [JAWS-Users] flash player

2014-12-31 Thread Jim Pursley
Press Windows key and r (should get you to the run menu. Then type
run. Flash should come up. Press the JAWS key, CNTRL and V
simultaneously and the version of flash player should come up.
JAWS,CNTRL,V is a JAWS command.

Hi all,
my flash player updates through windows update but it does not tell me
which version I have I use to be able to go into the add-ons in
Thunderbird and click on the plug in tab and enter on check to see if
your plug ins are up to date but since I upgraded to windows 8.1 the
shock wave flash player is not listed their anymore.

does anyone on the list know how I can tell which version I have?
