Re: [Mac-access]: IOS: copying text from webpages using voiceover and IOS 8.2

2015-03-26 Thread Bryan Jones
If you own the excellent Voice Dream Reader IOS app (VDR), you might try
opening the website in VDR and selecting / copying the text using the
alternative method provided in that app. It’s still not a perfect solution, but
is better than the default method provided in IOS, IMHO.

Thank you for providing an example website, David. My testing of the page you
linked mirrored what I’ve been seeing on most other websites: The latest
versions of both Chrome Stable and Chrome Canary work fine with VoiceOver under
Mavericks 10.9.5, but those same versions of CHrome have a number of VoiceOver
issues under all versions of Yosemite. This is one of several reasons why I
have not yet upgraded my production Macs to Yosemite.

Systems tested:
2013 Macbook Air 11
2008 Macbook
OS X 10.9.5
OS X 10.10.2
Chrome Stable version 40.0.2214.94
Chrome Canary version 42.0.2292.0

If you turn Chrome Vox on then the news content does become readable with

Re: [Mac-access]: Google Chrome

2015-01-29 Thread Bryan Jones
Is there anything in particular you are wondering about? In my limited testing
of the latest version of Chrome under Yosemite 10.10.2, I’ve been able to use
the standard VO web navigation commands to move through pages just as I would
when navigating in Safari. There are, however, at least two notable bugs as
listed in Google ticket 439695. The first bug is that the web rotor as accessed
with the VO+U keystroke is completely non-functional. The second issue is that
the standard VO+Shift+Down Arrow keystroke fails to interact with the HTML
content. The simple workaround for this one is to use the tab key to move VO
focus into the web content. Note that neither of these bugs exists when running
the same version of Chrome under Mavericks.

[Mac-access]: Seeking suggestions for a more powerful OS X clipboard

2015-01-09 Thread Bryan Jones
Greetings All,

I’m interested to hear from anyone who is successfully using any sort of
VO-accessible alternative to the standard MacOS Clipboard. In particular, I am
interested in one specific feature: the ability to use the “Copy last phrase to
clipboard” command (VO+Shift+C) to copy multiple consecutive or non-consecutive
items to the clipboard without overwriting the previous item. I am a frequent
User of this particular VO command, and there have been many times when I’ve
thought I could increase my productivity and decrease the number of redundant
keystrokes by simply being able to invoke this command repeatedly and have the
content copy itself into some sort of non-volatile version of the built-in
clipboard for future retrieval.

I came across another example this morning where I thought about how useful
this ability would be. I have received a number of emails from students who are
requesting that I help contact publishers to request accessible versions of
textbooks. These emails usually include lists of the book titles with edition,
author, publisher and ISBN. Usually, I only need the ISBN, so I will go through
each email, find each ISBN, use the VO “Copy last phrase to clipboard” command
to copy the number, use the standard Command+V to paste the item into a
spreadsheet, return to the email, and repeat the process for each ISBN in each
email. I’d really like to just copy the first item to the clipboard, navigate
to the next ISBN, copy it to the clipboard without having it overwrite the
first instance, and repeat this process for all ISBN numbers, then go to the
clipboard or to the destination document and paste the entire list.

Thoughts appreciated,
Bryan

Re: [Mac-access]: Question about movies from the itunes store

2014-12-28 Thread Bryan Jones
I can try to answer a few of your questions. My responses are based on results
from the US iTunes store accessed through iTunes 12.0.1 running under MacOS
10.9.5. YMMV.

If a movie is available both for rent and for purchase, VO will speak the first
2 Form Control items as price, purchase, title,” and “price, rent, title.”
For example, if I navigate to the movie titled “Best in Show” and then open the
web rotor and go to the list of form controls, the first 2 items announce
“$9.99, Purchase, Best in Show,” and “$2.99, Rent, Best in Show.” If a movie is
available only for purchase, I only hear the purchase option. For your example
of “The Imitation Game,” I hear “$19.99, Pre-Order, The Imitation Game.”

Regarding the meaning of “pre-order,” I googled itunes.com what is pre-order
and the first result was the following Apple KB article.
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202723

Regarding streaming of audio described movies: I am pretty sure there are
currently no sources for legally renting and streaming movies with bundled
audio description tracks here in the US. FWIW, there are a handful of audio
described movies for purchase and download in the US iTunes store. These all
seem to be Disney titles, and can be found by searching for “DVS. For example,
here is a link to purchase the audio described version of the movie titled
“Up!” in the US iTunes store.

releases (Mr Turner and the Imitation Game) and may not be available for both
rental and purchase. I am primarily interested in rental.

i see that rented movies have to be watched within 30 days of download and
once started watching has to be completed within 48 hours. Can I only watch a
rented movie once within the 30 days?

both the above movies are listed as pre-order. what does this mean?

Is audio description standard in all movies from the iTunes store? If so do I
have to do anything special to enable audio description? If it is not
standard are there options to enable me to choose a version with audio
description? How do I know which movies have audio description and which do
 not?

Re: [Mac-access]: Mail with Yosemite

2014-12-08 Thread Bryan Jones
Clean installs of 10.10.1 on 2 different Macs here have yielded no love with
VO+J in either Finder or Mail in Classic view. I wonder what might be different
between our systems.

Interestingly, it seems to be the sidebar VO+J has an aversion to. If I show
the path bar in Finder, VO+J will reliably hop back and forth between the list
of applications and the path bar, and if I have the preview pane showing in
Mail’s classic view, VO+J will gladly hop between the message list and the
preview pane; however, if the path bar and preview pane are hidden, VO+J will
jump from the sidebar to the file list or message list but will not hop back.

outside of the Apple App store, the 600mb download is available now from the
link on the following website:
http://finereader.abbyy.com/pro_for_mac/

THe update for the App Store version does not appear to be available yet as of
this message, at least not in the US App Store. ABBYY has an FAQ indicating it
should be available by the end of this week.

A word of caution for folks who rely on FineReader Pro: ABBYY posted the
following comment on their FB page yesterday:

FineReader Professional for Mac is not compatible with Mac OS Yosemite at this
time. However, the retail version update is expected to be available late next
week on the AppStore. Please check back for updates. If you have any questions,

Call me frugal or maybe just cheap, but I personally think this is one of
those instances where a DIY solution is worth considering. A cardboard box

Re: mavericks folder attributes

2014-09-29 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello David,

I think I understand now what you are saying. You are expecting a new Finder
window to open when you press one of the “go to folder…” hotkey combos. Is that
correct? Is that how it behaved for you prior to Mavericks? If yes, do you
recall if there was a toggle in Finder Prefs prior to Mavericks that switched
between opening folders in a new window or opening them in the current window?
If there was, I must have always set it to open in the current window as that
is the behavior I seem to unconsciously expect, but I can certainly understand
being frustrated if the other option was taken away in Mavericks.

My memory is not the greatest, but I think I’ve always used the “go to folder…”
hotkeys to change the folder in the current window, which is the way it is
working for me under Mavericks. For example, if I start out by closing all
Finder windows leaving the Finder showing just the Desktop, and then follow the
steps you listed in your previous email, I get the following results:
1. GO to the Computer folder with command shift c. This opens a new Finder
window focussed on “Bryan’s Macbook Air,” aka the Computer.
2. Press command shift H to go to the Home folder. This changes the focus in
the current Finder window from Computer to Home.
3. Press command shift A to go to the Applications folder. This changes the
focus in the current Finder window from Home to Applications.

Note that on my system this process does not close any windows, it only changes
the selected folder within the current window. If I’ve opened multiple Finder
windows with the Command+N hotkey as I normally do, pressing a “go to folder”
hotkey in any of those only changes the folder in that particular window and
neither closes nor changes the other open Finder windows.

HTH,
Bryan

Hello Ian David,

I’m not sure if I’m understanding you correctly, so please excuse if this reply
is off target.

In OS 10.9.5 I have no problems opening a bunch of Finder windows (COmmand+N)
and cycling through them by pressing the standard Command+` key combo. On the
US Keyboard layout of my MBA, the “` key is the leftmost key in the number
row. On my Apple wireless ISO Spanish keyboard, this key is located immediately
to the left of the “Z” key. I’m not sure where it is found on a UK layout.

Also, I do not hide the Sidebar, and in my Finder Preferences, the item “Open
folders in tabs instead of windows,” found under the General heading, is
unchecked.

Re: Abbyy fine reader pro help please

2014-09-27 Thread Bryan Jones
Here is the workflow I generally follow when using ABBYY FineReader Pro on my
Mac in combination with a WiFi connected scanner to scan, import, OCR and
export single- or multipage documents.

These instructions were written based on FineReader Pro version 12.0.6, MacOS
10.9.5, a 2013 Macbook Air, and a Canon Pixma MX922 MFP. These instructions
assume the User has a working knowledge of VoiceOver and a compatible and
functioning scanner connected wired or wirelessly to a mac with the proper
scanner drivers and the latest version of FineReader Pro installed.

1. Load the paper document(s) into the scanner.
2. Launch FineReader Pro.
3. If FineReader does not automatically open to a “New Task” dialog, press
Command+N to open the New Task dialog. The New Task dialog Is laid out roughly
in the form of a table and is relatively intuitive, but there are a few
confusingly labeled items, so I will include some additional notes at the end
of these instructions.
4. In the New Task dialog, highlight your scanner in the Sources table, make
sure the correct Document Language(s) are selected, and then press VO+Spacebar
on the desired export format. This will open a new window where you can specify
various scan options specific to your scanner. I assume these options will vary
depending on the make, model features of the selected scanner. On my system I
have options such as flat-bed or ADF, duplex mode, scan area, color depth,
resolution and detect orientation.
5. After you have selected the desired scan settings, navigate to the button
labeled “Scan” and press VO+Spacebar to activate it. Your scanner should begin
scanning. I’m not sure if there is an official VO-accessible way to monitor
scan progress, but I normally either listen to the scanner or monitor the Scan
button, whose name will toggle between “Scan” and “Stop Scanning” depending on
scan status.
6. When all pages have been scanned, navigate to the button labeled “Finish
import” and press VO+Spacebar to activate it. A dialog box will provide
progress information as FineReader recognizes the text.
7. When the recognition process has completed, a standard OSX File Save As
dialog opens where you will name the file, choose the location where you’d like
it saved, and click the Export button to complete the process.

A few notes regarding the “New Task” window.
1. I suggest spending a few minutes familiarizing oneself with the items in the
New Task window by exploring with the VO+left and VO+right arrows.
2. There are two items in the New Task window that don’t seem to do anything:
one spoken simply as “Label” and the other spoken simply as “Image.”
3. There is a mislabeled button spoken as either “Go right, unchecked” or “Go
left, unchecked.” Pressing VO+Spacebar on this item will toggle it and will
also toggle between the “Quick conversion” and “Conversion format” labels. As
far as I can tell, all this does is switch the list of available export formats
between the short list displayed in the “Quick COnversion” list, and the full
list shown in the “COnversion Formats” list.

Bryan

Re: Abbyy fine reader pro help please

2014-09-26 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Ian,

Here is the workflow I normally follow when using FineReader Pro (FRP) to
convert existing PDF image files or other files I want to OCR. This is the
quick method and basically involves opening the document in FRP, allowing the
automatic recognition process to complete, and then exporting the resulting
text to the desired file format. This quick process works fine for the vast
majority of my OCR needs. Note that these instructions are for processing
existing digital documents such as PDF files. I also use FRP to interface
directly with my scanner for importing scanned paper documents, and I can write
up a separate set of instructions for that process if you need them.

1. In the FInder, navigate to the file you wish to OCR.
2. Press VO+Shift+M to open the shortcut menu, and choose “Open with…
FineReader Pro.
3. The file will open in FRP and FRP will automatically start the process of
“Recognizing” the document. A dialog box provides status information on this
process.
4. When the recognition process has completed, you might encounter a dialog box
with a message or messages warning you of any problems encountered during the
recognition process. Close the warning dialog when you’ve finished reading it.
5. Press Command+S to open the Export dialog.
6. Select the format you wish to export the document to, and adjust any
associated options if desired, then click Next. This opens a standard OSX File
Save As dialog where you will name the file, choose the location where you’d
like it saved, and click the Export button to complete the process.

Bryan

Re: KNFB Reader Does it work on the iPad?

2014-09-24 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Martin,

Here is a brief summary of my experience attempting to install and use the KNFB
Reader app on my iPad. YMMV, and I am by no means recommending that anyone
attempt to install and run this app on an unsupported device.

Having already purchased, installed fallen in love with the KNFB Reader app
on my iPhone 5S running IOS 7.1.2, I decided to ignore the stated system
requirements and install it on my WiFi iPad Mini retina running IOS 8.

The app showed up as installable (already paid for) in the App Store on the
iPad, and I had no issues with the installation process on the iPad.

The first thing I noticed after installation is that there is a pronounced lag
when navigating the app’s interface on my iPad. There is a delay of several
seconds when swiping or touching from item to item. For testing purposes, I
ignored this lag and took several pictures of a computer screen and a printed
text document, both of which were OCR’d and read aloud quickly.

I attempted to toggle on “tilt guidance” but it remained off, which led me to
wonder if perhaps there is no vibration built into the iPad. I’m not sure. I
also tried the “field of view report” a half-dozen times but managed to receive
spoken feedback with the edge and clockface report just once. I did not attempt
to dig further into any of the settings or options, nor did I attempt any sort
of troubleshooting.

That was the extent of my testing. I am very happy with the performance of this
app on my iPhone, and I imagine the Devs have some good technical reasons for
leaving the current crop of iPads out of the supported device list.

Bryan

Re: Facebook apps and refund of app.

2014-09-01 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Sean — I regularly experience the first 3 issues in your list. Here are a
handfull of other FB App issues I experience with some regularity. This is on
an iPhone 5S, IOS 7.1.2, FB App version 14.
1. In general, when attempting to open a post by performing a one finger
double-tap, or when attempting to “interact” with a post by performing a two
finger double-tap, the behavior is just absurdly unpredictable. Sometimes
things work exactly as expected, but often the results leave me scratching my
head. I regularly encounter obstacles such as the Ufi overlay tag” message,
the “unfollow this person” message, the “item selected” message or sometimes
just complete silence.
2. Double-tapping a “Like” button prduces unpredictable results. Sometimes it
works as expected to show that I like a post, other times it jumps to a
different location in the thread, and occasionally it even activates a
different link or button somewhere else on the screen.
3. If I am reading through my newsfeed and perform a one-finger double-tap to
open a particular post so that I might read comments or follow an embedded URL
or whatever, I am often stonewalled by VO saying “item selected” but the post
not actually opening. The only way I’ve found past this is to triple-click-home
to turn VO off, perform a single one finger tap in the approximate screen
location where I think the desired post resides, and then turn VO back on. Of
course, this means I sometimes activate something I did not want to.
4. If I enter a post because I want to read some external content the poster
has included, such as a link to an external site or a link to the body of a
shared article, there is no way to move item-by-item within the post in order
to focus on the URL. The only option is to double-tap the body of the post and
hope it activates the desired object, which often does not happen.
5. When attempting to post a photo, the FB interface to the camera roll is
still not very VO-friendly.

If you haven’t already done so, I’d recommend submitting feedback to FB via the
following form:
https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/169372943117927

Bryan

 2. When I open some notifications, speech stops if there is a photo. If I go
to the home screen and back into the Facebook app. It works.

 3. When looking through notifications and news feeds. If you use the left and
right swipe to move between elements. It sometimes dings and doesn’t move.
Other times it refreshes and throwing me off the current item I am trying to
 use.

Is Taco still the recommended accessible HTML editor?

2014-08-27 Thread Bryan Jones
Greetings All,

Is anyone successfully using VO to access all features of Taco or another HTML
Editor under OS 10.9? A quick search of the list archive indicates that Taco
has been recommended in the past, but it’s been a couple of years since the
topic of HTML editors was discussed seriously.

I’m starting an intro HTML CSS class which is being taught using Notepad++ on
Windows 7, and am limping by using NVDA, but am not really fluent yet in any
Windows screen-reader, so would prefer to be able to do the same sorts of
things that can be done in Notepad++ but do them on the Mac using my familiar
VO.

TIA,
Bryan

Re: I think I broke mail

2014-08-16 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Sarah,

Here’s how I am able to rearrange columns in the classic view of Mail in
Mavericks 10.9.4. Thanks to John Panarese’ excellent macforthe blind.com
website for reminding me how to move focus to the header row.

1. Interact with the messages list in Mail.
2. Press VO+Shift+\ to move focus to the column headers.
3. Press VO+left or right arrows to move focus to the “status” column header.
4. Press VO+Command+Shift+Spacebar to perform a mouse-down click.
5. Press VO+right or left arrow to move focus where you want to drop the status
column. VO will announce the name of each header as you move past it.
6. When you’ve reached the desired location for your status column, press
VO+Command+Shift+Spacebar to perform a mouse-up. This should drop the column in
it’s new location.
7. When you are done rearranging columns, press VO+Shift+\ to return focus to
the body of the messages list.

Re: Accessible firewall for the mac?

2014-08-16 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Michael,

Little Snitch is a great security utility, and much of it is actually quite VO
accessible. Unfortunately, you will need a sighted person to tick one checkbox
in order to turn on that accessibility. I’ve included instructions below.
(Please don’t flame the messenger about this particular accessibility gotcha…
I’ve already had my beard singed previously on this same subject, thread
available in the archives.) :-)

Also, please be forewarned that This app is not for the impatient or
faint-of-heart. It can be very chatty and verbose in it’s default
configuration. However, for the User who is willing and able to take the time
to learn and configure the myriad settings within this app, it can provide some
good information and another layer of security.

Here’s how to install the app and enable VO access. This assumes the latest
releases of Mavericks and Little Snitch.
1. Install Little Snitch and restart the Mac when prompted. While the Little
Snitch installation process is VO accessible, I recommend not installing it
unless a sighted person is available to perform steps 2 through 5 below,
otherwise Little Snitch might start blocking network communications with no way
for a blind User to know what is happening.
2. Launch applications / Little Snitch Configuration.app
3. Open the Little Snitch Preferences.
4. In the Security tab, tick the checkbox labeled “Allow GUI Scripting..” This
will enable VO to interact with most parts of Little Snitch. You might need to
restart the Mac again at this point.

One part of the app which I’m pretty sure is not VO accessible is the “Network
Monitor” pane.

Bryan

ABBYY FineReader Pro on sale for US $74.99 until August 3rd.

2014-07-31 Thread Bryan Jones
Greetings everyone,

The ABBYY FineReader Pro OCR application is on sale in the US Mac App Store for
$74.99 until August 3, 2014. It normally sells for $99.99. Sorry, I don’t know
if this sale applies outside of the US.

A trial version of FineReader Pro can be downloaded from ABBYY’s website at
http://download.abbyy.com.

FineReader can recognize a huge number of different languages, and can properly
handle documents that contain more than one language. It can be operated in a
simple mode that requires little interaction, or you can opt to manually
control almost every aspect of the import/scan/convert/export process if you
prefer. FineReader can open and convert files from your local drives, from the
camera roll of an attached iDevice, and from supported scanners. FineReader Pro
performs the OCR process on the local machine rather than in “the cloud,” so an
Internet connection is not required during the process.

I consider this app and it’s predecessor, FineReader Express, to be two of the
most helpful productivity apps I’ve utilized as a blind Mac User. I have used
them to OCR thousands of pages of textbooks, bills, magazines, PDF image files,
and even screenshots of apps websites that contain inaccessible text elements.

HTH,
Bryan

Re: How do I type letters with accents over them?

2014-07-22 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Andy,

Here’s the method I usually use to enter variants of a character in Mac. I
select from the list of alternative characters that pops up automatically when
I press and hold a letter key for a few seconds. For example, On my Macbook Air
running OS 10.9.4, if I am composing an email and my cursor is in the body of
the email and I want to type the letter you mentioned, the “n” with a tilde
over it, I can press and hold the “n” key for a couple of seconds, release the
key, then press the right arrow key to hear alternative character choices, then
press the Return key to select and insert the desired character. Note that this
feature is not implemented perfectly across all applications running under Mac
OS. For example, in Textedit I can use the left or right arrow keys by
themselves to navigate through all alternative characters that pop up, but in
Mail Pages I need to use a combination of the arrow keys and VO+arrow keys in
order to fully navigate these popups. I suggest spending a few minutes testing
this out with letters that offer big lists of alternate characters, such as “a”
and “e” and you’ll quickly get a feel for how it works.

Regarding your keyboard layout, you can check your keyboards in System
Preferences / Keyboard / Input sources. While you’re at it, you might want to
also verify your language Region settings in System Preferences / Language
and Region.

Bryan

Hello Margaret,

I recently gave Thunderbird 24.6.0 a look on my 2013 Macbook Air running OS
10.9.4, but I gave up on it because there seems to be no accessible way to
perform the mildly important task of adding or importing email accounts, as
noted in items 3, 4 5 of my findings below. I didn’t test the app any further
after hitting this roadblock.

1. The installation process is accessible.
2. Initial launch of the app presents an inaccessible dialog which can be
closed by pressing Escape.
3. Thunderbird / Preferences is completely inaccessible to VO.
4. Tools / Account Settings is completely inaccessible to VO.
5. Tools / Import is completely inaccessible to VO.

Re: Access to the bookmark bar.

2014-07-20 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Jim,

In Safari 7 under Mavericks, the Bookmark Favorites Bar is managed within the
Bookmarks editor, which can be opened from within Safari by pressing
Command+Option+B.

Once you are in the Bookmarks editor, navigate to the item helpfully labeled
simply as “Table” and interact with it. In this table you will find folders
named Favorites Bar and Bookmarks Menu.” There might also be other folders
and/or individual bookmarks, depending on how your Bookmarks are organized.

I personally find this bookmark editor to be a bit clumsy to navigate with VO,
but haven’t found a better alternative.

Here are a couple of quick tips I find helpful when working in this editor:

If you want to cut paste bookmarks and/or folders from one location to
another, use Command+X / Command+V, rather than the Finder’s keystroke combo of
Command+C / Command+Option+V, which does not seem to work here.

The VO keystroke to select multiple non-contiguous items, VO+COmmand+Return,
seems to work OK here.

If you prefer to drag drop, using VO’s mouse down/up keystroke to drag drop
single bookmarks or folders seems to work fine and is properly verbose as it
speaks the bookmarks/folders being passed.

Bryan

Re: Still can't scan with K3000

2014-07-09 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Juaanita,

As I mentioned in my origianl post, K3000 is not designed for blind Users, but
I’ve found that much of the application can be accessed using menu choices and
keystrokes to scan and read aloud. It’s certainly nowhere near a perfect
solution, but you said you were looking for a scanning app that would also read
the document aloud within the same app, and this is the one I know about. The
Kurzweil support rep you spoke with is wrong about needing to select an area
before scanning. I work with students all the time who scan single or multiple
pages directly into K3000 without needing to select anything.

Here are the steps that work for me on my system, a canon mx922 MFP connected
via wi-fi to a 2013 MBA running 10.9.4 K3000 version 5.26. Please try these
steps yourself and let me know where it fails and what message you receive.

1. Place document to be scanned in the scanner.
2. Launch K3000.
3. Either select “Scan” from the Starting Points window that opens when you
launch the app, or choose Scan / Scan New Document from the menu bar. This
opens a window to select the scanner and options.
4. Select the scanner and options as desired.
5. Activate the Scan button. The scanning process begins.
6. After scanning, the scanned document automatically opens in a window with a
name like “untitled document 1.”
7. Use the reading commands to read the document.
8. The scanned document can be saved in .KES, TXT or RTF formats using the
standard File/Save As command.

Re: Epson, K3000, and the slot loading door

2014-07-06 Thread Bryan Jones
Juaanita,

K3000 will automatically detect compatible scanners whose TWAIN drivers are
installed on your Mac. My suggestion would be to quit K3000, unplug the scanner
from your Mac, go to Epson’s website, download the latest TWAIN driver for your
model of scanner, install the driver, re-attach the scanner, launch K3000,, and
attemtp to initiate a scan job from within K3000. I believe at this point K3000
will auto-detect available compatible scanners and list them for you.

If that doesn’t work, please post back and include the exact scanner make and
model, driver version, connection type, OS version,.

When I registered FineReader Pro on my Mac it was done through an accessible

you were when you joined the group. Despite this, please don't start
posting to the new address until we tell you that it's operational.
Further, there will be a short outage of service. This is inevitable as
Gordon changes the DNS settings for the domains over to the new servers.
Usually, your provider will pick up the change quite quickly; but it isn't
unknown for it to take between 12 and 24 hours for it to happen with some
of the most rigid providers whose DNS systems only poll one of the 13
global NS systems once or twice a day. In the norm, however, it only takes
 a matter of minutes.

Also, it is possible that, if you have used the group at one address in the
same session as it changes to a new one, you may get an outage until you
reboot. This is because most systems retain temporary caches of name
servers and IP addresses so that they don't have to keep continually
polling the provider's servers. This happens behind the scenes and, unless
you know how to disable or modify this behaviour in your operating system's
IP stack rules, there isn't much that you can do about it other than
 rebooting.

Anyway, please don't panic if you see new subscription messages but mail
bounces or other odd things happen. Things will settle themselves down
eventually and I will make a point of writing to each and every one of you
to tell you when the change-over is complete. Please know that we do care

Re: accessing PDF forms on the mac using VO.

2014-06-23 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Stuart,

I would strongly urge you to download and try the latest version of PDFpen from
the www.smilesoftware.com website. The trial version has a few limitations but
nothing that will prevent testing a PDF file to see if you can access the form
fields. I’ve been testing the latest version, 6.3, and have found that I can
navigate through, interact with, and fill form fields in PDF files using
standard tab and VO navigation techniques. Note that I have been testing with
PDF files that I know were created using the PDF accessibility guidelines, and
YMMV if you are attempting to work with non-compliant PDF files.

Also note that I’ve only been focussing on testing the specific VO improvements
mentioned by the Developer in the current release notes, including labeling of
buttons and access to form fields. I don’t think PDFpen yet provides full
access to headings, tables, etc.

In my opinion version 6.3 of the PDFpen application provides a glimmer of hope
that true access to accessible PDF files may someday become a reality on the
Mac.

Re: PDf's

2014-06-23 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Adi,

Access to PDF files is an important part of my day-to-day life and I’ve tested
a dozen or more PDF reading Mac apps over the past few years but have found no
single app that provides anything resembling true access to properly tagged PDF
files on the Mac. I assumed all PDF files must just be inherently inaccessible
because my only point of reference was the limited access provided by the PDF
tools available to Mac VO Users. It was only recently that I discovered how
wonderfully accessible a properly created PDF file can be when read on Windows.
While Preview and Skim provide basic access to PDF files on the Mac, AFAIK
there is no tool on the Mac that even comes close to properly handling
accessible PDF files in the way that the free Adobe Reader does on Windows.
Speaking of Adobe Reader, the Mac version is essentially useless in terms of VO
access.

On a hopeful note, the latest version of the paid PDFpen application shows
promise as the Developer specifically focussed on VO usage including making
form fields accessible. I don’t think PDFpen yet provides accessible navigation
by headings, etc, but it might be worth testing if PDF files are important to
you.

Re: tagging somebody on Facebook using Safari on Mac

Hello Eleanor,

Would you mind sharing the steps you follow to successfully tag a friend in the
body of a post using the m.facebook.com site? I’ve had no luck making this
happen. While the popup list of Friends does present itself, I’ve found no way
to reliably select and insert a name from that list. Attempting to arrow
through the list just produces the standard keyboard dead-end tone, pointing
and clicking the mouse has no effect, and the item chooser does not seem to see
the items in this popup list.

Thank you,

 Hello Laurel Sarah,

On my Macs I’m currently able to tag FB Friends from a popup list using the
 following steps:
 1. This assumes the latest versions of MacOS and Safari are installed,
QuickNav is turned off, and that javascript is enabled in Safari (Safari /
Preferences / Security / Enable Javascript).
 2. Go to the main Facebook site www.facebook.com. Note that this will not
work on the mobile Facebook site, m.facebook.com.
 3. On the main Facebook page, navigate to and activate the button labeled
“Update Status.” VO now announces “What’s on your mind” and I can start
 typing my status update here.
 4. When I want to tag someone in the body of the status, I type the “@“
symbol followed by the first few letters of their name, as you mentioned, and
then I can use one of the following three methods to select and insert the
desired name into the status. Note that all of these methods require
Javascript to be enabled in Safari.
Method 1: Press the down arrow key with no modifier keys and VO automatically
moves into the list of matching names and I can highlight the friend I want
to tag and then press VO+Spacebar to insert the name into the status and
 resume typing.
Method 2: if your Mac has a mouse or trackpad and if you are comfortable
using it and if you have your VO Verbosity set to speak text under mouse
after delay of zero seconds” you might be able to press VO+Command+F5 to
bring the mouse pointer to the VO cursor and then move the mouse pointer down
through the popup list of names and click once to insert the name.
Method 3: Open the Item Chooser menu (VO+I) and type the first few letters
you typed in step 4 above. This narrows my item chooser down to the list of
names in the popup list and I can then navigate and select the desired name
using normal Item Chooser / VO commands.

BTW, On my Macs I normally use the FB mobile site, m.facebook.com, but I’m
not able to tag friends using the mobile site, which is why I wrote my
instructions using the standard FB site.

Also, I’ve not yet tried removing the last names from a tag, so I can’t speak
to whether or not that works in Safari on the Mac.

Lastly, while the folks at FB are undeniably making great strides in terms of
site accessibility, I have a sense that they are still prone to making
random, unannounced back-end changes that alter the layout and behavior of
 the site. Thus, YMMV.

HTH, and please let us know if this works for you,
 Bryan

“Update Status.” VO now announces “What’s on your mind” and I can start typing
my status update here.
4. When I want to tag someone in the body of the status, I type the “@“ symbol
followed by the first few letters of their name, as you mentioned, and then I
can use one of the following three methods to select and insert the desired
name into the status. Note that all of these methods require Javascript to be
enabled in Safari.
Method 1: Press the down arrow key with no modifier keys and VO automatically
moves into the list of matching names and I can highlight the friend I want to
tag and then press VO+Spacebar to insert the name into the status and resume
typing.
Method 2: if your Mac has a mouse or trackpad and if you are comfortable using
it and if you have your VO Verbosity set to speak text under mouse after delay
of zero seconds” you might be able to press VO+Command+F5 to bring the mouse
pointer to the VO cursor and then move the mouse pointer down through the popup
list of names and click once to insert the name.
Method 3: Open the Item Chooser menu (VO+I) and type the first few letters you
typed in step 4 above. This narrows my item chooser down to the list of names
in the popup list and I can then navigate and select the desired name using
normal Item Chooser / VO commands.

BTW, On my Macs I normally use the FB mobile site, m.facebook.com, but I’m not
able to tag friends using the mobile site, which is why I wrote my instructions
using the standard FB site.

Also, I’ve not yet tried removing the last names from a tag, so I can’t speak
to whether or not that works in Safari on the Mac.

Lastly, while the folks at FB are undeniably making great strides in terms of
site accessibility, I have a sense that they are still prone to making random,
unannounced back-end changes that alter the layout and behavior of the site.
Thus, YMMV.

HTH, and please let us know if this works for you,
Bryan

the last name, etc. The part that we VO users can't get around is that once

not, but maybe somebody more knowledgable than I can take this info and do

Re: Reverse Colours On Mac

2014-06-11 Thread Bryan Jones
Yes, there is a keyboard shorcut available for this function. If I remember
correctly, the shorcut key was available by default in versions of OSX through
Snow Leopard, but it has been disabled by default since then. Here are the
steps to re-enable it.

1. Go to System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts.
2. Interact with the Shorcuts Category Table.
3. Arrow down to “Accessibility.”
4. Press VO+J to jump to the Accessibility Shorcuts table.
5. Arrow down to “Invert Colors.”
6. Make sure the checkbox for this row is checked. It is unchecked by default
in recent OSX versions.
7. You also might want to change the default shortcut key assigned to this
function. If I recall correctly, the default shortcut key combination did not
work if VoiceOver was in use. I changed the default shortcut key combo on my
system to Command+Option+Shift+8, which works fine throughout my system and
does not seem to interfere with other shortcut keys.

Re: Firefox on the Mac

2014-06-03 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Andy,

On my 2013 MBA running OS 10.9, neither Safari 7.0.4 nor Chrome 35 went into a
busy state when navigating through those pages or the specific item you
mentioned; however, I did encounter a number of other smaller issues during the
process, including unlabeled popup buttons and fields that were completely
skipped during normal VO+Right Arrow and/or Tab navigation. I won’t even bother
to embarrass myself with a guess as to why these issues exist; However, I did
get some better results when I turned off Javascript in Safari Preferences /
Security, and then restarted Safari before working my way through the Hadley
enrollment application again. I know this might not address the specific issue
you are encountering, but perhaps toggling javascript on or off in your browser
might help with your issue.

Once Javascript was turned off, I was able to use a combination of VO+Arrows,
Tab, and the Web Rotor to identify all of the elements that were previously not
being spoken.

For reference, here are a couple of specific issues I encountered while
Javascript was enabled:
1. Using VO+Right Arrow to move through items, VO skips over the Braille
questions, hopping from “Select your highest level of education” to a link
labeled “Enroll.”
2. When I attempt to navigate this same sequence using the Tab key, I do find
the Braille questions, but still, the first Braille question is simply
announced as “popup button” with no label or descriptive text attached.
3. When I uncheck “Skip redundant labels” in the VO Utility, I had an easier
albeit terribly verbose experience finding associated field and popup labels.

Bryan

RE: The QuickBooks program

2014-05-12 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Laurel,

Sorry for the delayed response . This question recently came up on AppleVis,
where a person was not able to run QuickBooks 2012 for Mac while VO was
running. I tried running the 30 day trial of QuickBooks 2014 on my 2013 Macbook
Air running OS 10.9.2, but this latest version of Quickbooks also does not
appear to work at all while VO is turned on, at least not on my system. The
initial screen is a license agreement with the expected “Accept,” Decline,” etc
buttons, but that screen causes VO to start announcing “Busy, Busy, Busy.
Bringing up the Force Quit window shows the app is not responding. When I quit
the app, turn off VO, re-launch the app and click past the license agreement,
the app again goes into a “not responding “ state as soon as I toggle VO back
on.

The hopeful news is that Intuit has finally started to address some of their
longstanding accessibility issues. The initial focus has been on the Windows
version of QuickBooks, but it sounds like they have plans to address their
other products as well.

I know at least one person -- an advocate from the website myblindspot.org --
has been working with Intuit on this process. That website has a contact form
and it might be a good starting point for requesting access to QuickBooks for
Mac.

HTH,
Bryan

My dad and I are starting a business, we're looking at the Quickbook program

combination with Intuit. Is there anybody who has had experience with Quickbook
and can speak to its accessibility?

Yes, I’ve heard this anecdote from a number of different folks over the years.
Unfortunately, AFAIK none of these folks have produced any hard evidence to
show that turning the screen curtain on actually increases battery life. I’d
love to see a controlled and replicable study to either prove or disprove the
assertions of those of us including Apple who believe there’s no difference in
battery life with or without screen curtain.

Re: Not able to disable the preview pane on a new iMac

2014-05-04 Thread Bryan Jones
I just wanted to second Anne’s findings with regard to hiding the preview pane
under mavericks. I use classic view exclusivley, but sometimes will switch
between showing and hiding the preview pane. Whenever I’ve tried using VO
commands to interact and drag down the horizontal splitter, it only seems to
get to somewhere around 88 percent closed and then Mail goes into the dreaded
busy/ready/busy state. As Anne suggested, I now interact with the splitter,
bring the mouse pointer to the VO cursor, and physically click, hold, and drag
down to hide the preview pane.

Cheers,

 dragged to the bottom.

I tried interacting with the splitter to move it to the bottom, but it would
get stuck part way down and Mail would become busy and no longer respond, so
the only solution seems to be to drag it with the mouse or trackpad.

Re: searching for groups on Facebook, voiceover on the mac

2014-03-30 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Laurel,

I’ll attempt to answer your 2 questions in reverse.
Regarding the list archives, there should be a few links at the bottom of each
email you receive from the Mac-Access list. Two of those links point to the
archives. I’ve pasted the text including those links below my signature in case
you are not finding them at the bottom of your standard list emails.
Regarding searching FB using VO Safari on the Mac, try the following:
1. Go to the basic version of the FB search page at m.facebook.com/search
2. Navigate to the text field labeled “Search.” In my web rotor, this is the
only text field listed on this page.
3. Type in the term you want to search for and then press Return.
4. Press VO+Right Arrow a few times. VO hopefully announces buttons for People,
Pages, Events and Groups.
5. Press VO+Spacebar on the button labeled “Groups.” This should narrow the
list of search results to Groups.
6. Press VO+Right Arrow to navigate through the list of search results, and
press VO+Spacebar on a result to go to that group’s FB page.

Re: Chrome Vox and bookmarks

2014-03-21 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Juaanita,

To the best of my knowledge, ChromeVox is currently designed to read and
navigate just the content of web pages. It does not navigate items outside of
the window containing the web content. So, for example, It is not currently
possible to use ChromeVox to navigate to and/or hear the Chrome menu bar,
address bar, bookmarks bar, etc while using Chrome on the Mac.

I’d recommend using VO in conjunction with ChromeVox, as another lister
suggested. Be aware that this scenario has a history of sometimes breaking on
some web pages or when one of the components (ChromeVox, Chrome, or OSX) are
updated. If I am using ChromeVox to navigate a website, I will normally toggle
VO off until I need it to perform some command outside of the current web page.

If you do want to use ChromeVox to access your Chrome bookmarks, you can do so
by using the standard Command+L hotkey to go to the address field, then typeing
chrome://bookmarks, then pressing Return. This will open an HTML version of
your bookmarks within a Chrome window. Note that as with many things Google,
you might need to be logged into your google account for this to work. Also,
navigating, managing and activating bookmarks using ChromeVox within this
interface takes some getting used to. For example, you might need to adjust the
level of navigation granularity and experiment with the Enter, Spacebar, and
CVox+Spacebar or multiple presses of same in order to achieve the desired
action on a particular element.

Also, as Sarah mentioned, one of the best places to get help with ChromeVox
questions is the google group named axs-chrome-discuss”

Re: Chrome Web Store - ChromeVox

2014-03-18 Thread Bryan Jones
Maybe try the following steps. These assume the current stable build of Chrome
running under MacOS 10.9.2. Also, since you will be using VO during the process
of initially installing ChromeVox, keep in mind that VO does not always work
the same in Chrome as it does in Safari or straight webkit. Sometimes if I’m
not able to locate an element in chrome using the VO web rotor I might still be
able to find it using the item chooser or by simply taking the long way ‘round
and VO+Arrowing or even tabbing through the page.
1. Launch Chrome.
2. Go to www.chromevox.com. On that page, navigate to the link labeled
“”Install ChromeVox” and activate the link by pressing VO+Spacebar. This will
hopefully take you to the appropriate Chrome webstore page for ChromeVox.
3. Now navigate to the button unhelpfully labeled “Free” and activate it by
pressing VO+Spacebar.
Chrome might popup a window listing the potential privacy and other issues. If
you are comfortable with these, navigate to the button labeled “Add” and
activate it by pressing VO+Spacebar. At this point the ChromeVox extension
should install itself and start speaking. You can toggle the active/inactive
state of ChromeVox by pressing Command+Control+AA

Some ChromeVox settings are adjusted by going to chrome://extensions, then
navigating to the ChromeVox extension and then activating the options link.

My suggestion after successfully installing ChromeVox is to go back to
www.chromevox.com, read the information on that page and walk through the
interactive tutorial.

Re: Magnification with Mac

Hello Eleanor,

On my Mac running OS 10.9.2 I am able to activate the Zoom hotkeys by going to

available hotkeys for toggling Zoom and for zooming in and out. Are these
hotkeys not working on your system?

Re: OCR Apps

2014-03-11 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Alberto,

I’ve had good success with both the older ABBYY FineReader Express and the
recently released ABBYY FineReader Pro (FRP). I find most buttons and other
controls to be properly accessible with VO. I also find the workflow to be
fairly intuitive. I am running the latest version of FRP on a 2013 MBA with
scans coming over Wi-Fi from a Canon PIXMA MX922. In the last few months FRP
has successfully scanned and converted a few thousand pages of snail mail,
bills, books, and even the (sadly inaccurate) fortune from a fortune cookie. I
have no problems scanning from either the Canon’s flatbed or it’s sheet-feeder,
and even the sheet-feeder’s duplex function has worked seamlessly. Converting
digital files is also a straightforward process. While I haven’t actually timed
it, my impression is the OCR process is quicker in FRP than it was in FR
Express. FRP runs the OCR process locally and is one of the few applications
that will actually cause my MBA’s fan to kick into high gear. If I know I’m
going to be performing a big OCR process, such as converting a 500 page PDF
file or scanning and converting a stack of bills, I will normally start the
process and leave the computer alone for a while while it’s doing the OCR magic.

Having said all that, I would of course strongly recommend getting hold of a
demo and testing to make sure it works with your Mac and scanner.

YMMV,
HTH,
Bryan

Re: Little Snitch for Mac

2014-03-02 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Lynne,

In February 2011 I contacted Objective Development, the Developers of Little
Snitch, to ask about VO compatibility. I’ve pasted their response below. I have
not tried Little Snitch in a couple of years; thus, I cannot say whether these
same instructions will work for the current version of Little Snitch running
under the latest versions of MacOS.

HTH,
Bryan

Begin response from Objective Development Customer Support:

Little Snitch can be used with VoiceOver.

Unfortunately VoiceOver can present a security risk, because it makes one
app controllable by another app. That is why controlling Little Snitch via
VoiceOver is disabled by default.

You would need to ask a seeing person to enable the preferences setting
Allow GUI Scripting access to Little Snitch in the Security tab of the
preferences in the Little Snitch Configuration application.

You might then want to disable this option: In the preferences tab
Monitor, the setting Show automatically on network activity -
otherwise the Network Monitor will be much too chatty :)

End response from Objective Development.

The Developer has a legitimate concern. VO is a utility with fingers deep into
parts of the MacOS and thus must be considered a potential threat vector. I’ve
often wondered if Apple’s conservative approach to the development of VO is due

Re: How to make screenshots ona a Mac as a blind person?

2014-03-02 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Christian,

Another option you might want to explore is the “VO Cursor screenshot.” In OS
10.9 it is possible to create a screenshot of whatever currently resides within
the VO Cursor. Here are two ways I know of to achieve this:
1. Press VO+HH to open the VO Commands Help menu, then select the Visuals menu,
then select the item labeled Save Contents of VoiceOver Cursor to Desktop as
Image File.” VO should announce something like, “screenshot saved,” and a new
file should appear on your desktop with the name
“VoiceOverCursorScreenshot-X.png. Note that you can use the Commanders section
of the VO Utility to create a quicker way to activate this command.
2. Use the pre-existing applescript named, “”VoiceOver screenshot to mail.” I
believe there is already a hotkey setup for this in the Keyboard Commander
settings in OS 10.9.

Hello Sarah,

While I can’t speak to how well the command works under 10.6, I can say I’ve
had some success using it under 10.9. The VO Cursor screenshot is, of course,
limited to the various levels of focus available to the VO cursor and thus
requires an awareness of the current level of interaction. When attempting to
alter the area of focus on web pages, I’ve sometimes found switching between
DOM Group modes to be helpful.

Incidentally, I really like this command when attempting to OCR a particular
button or other unlabeled element. I appreciate being able to capture just the
unlabeled element and running it through ABBYY FineReader.

Re: Amazon Prim app

2014-02-08 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Glenn,

I’m unable to locate a specific Amazon Prime App in the US App store. Would you
mind providing a link to this App? With regard to the App closing when you try
to watch a video, can you list the troubleshooting steps you’ve tried so far,
e.g. closing all running apps, deleting and reinstalling the offending app,
cycling power on the device, etc.

Also, if you are trying to watch Amazon Videos, you might want to take a look
at the Amazon Instant Video App if it is available in your country’s App store.
I’ll paste a US App Store link at the bottom of this email. I’ve found the
current version of the Amazon Instant VIdeo App to be mostly VO accessible on
my iPhone 5S running IOS 7.0.4. If you decide to give this App a try, here are
some tips pasted from my Applevis entry for this App.

Begin pasted text:
Here is my overview of this App from login to finding content to watching a
video. Note that I am an Amazon Prime member and if you are not, your
experience may differ.

Initial launch of the app presents a VO accessible login screen for the User's
Amazon credentials.
The first successful login leads to an inaccessible page of advertising but a
simple one finger double-tap will make this page go away and land you on the
Home screen. The Home screen consists of a few decently labeled items across
the top, four properly labeled buttons along the bottom, and a large central
portion of the screen which is populated by an animated list of inaccessible
video titles. Annoyingly, this animated list keeps VO chattering, “Video one of
four, VIdeo two of four, etc,” while the VO User attempts to navigate away from
the Home screen. FOrtunately, activating any of the four buttons along the
bottom of the screen or the Browse or search buttons in the top of the screen
moves focus away from the animated section and gets VO back to normal.

The 4 buttons along the bottom of the screen are, from left to right: Home,
Watch List, Library, and Settings.

The Home button returns the User to the initial Home screen described above.

The Watch List button presents VO accessible thumbnails of any movies or TV
shows in the User’s watch list. There are buttons along the top of the screen
to toggle the results list between movies and TV shows. Double-tapping a
thumnail opens the detail page for the item. Most of the information on the
detail page seems VO accessible, including the buttons to play, download,
resume, watch trailer, and add/remove from watch list. There are some reviews
and IMDB links that seem to be rendered as images and are not VO accessible.
During video playback the controls can be accessed by performing a one finger
double-tap on the screen. The controls temporarily pop up along the bottom edge
of the screen and can be found by swiping or moving a finger around the screen.
An airplay button is included in the list of controls.

The Video Library button presents a list of digital videos the User has
purchased from Amazon.

The Settings button has five subheadings:
1. About. This is VO accessible and provides the version number and other bits
of info about the app.
2. Legal Notices. (On my system, VO incorrectly reads this item as “My
Account.”) This provides a VO accessible page of legal info.
3. Provide Feedback. This presents a standard new mail item with a pre-filled
framework allowing the User to provide feedback directly to Amazon.
4. Contact Support. Like the feedback button above, this opens a new mail item
with the To and From fields ready and prompts the User to describe the problem
they are having.
5. My Account. This lists the iDevice name and the name of the registered User
and provides a logout button.

The buttons along the top edge of the screen change to meet the requirements of
whatever task the User is performing. In the Home screen, the top buttons are
Browse and Search. Double-tapping the Browse button pulls down a list of
categories arranged vertically down the center of the screen when held in
portrait mode. This category list is VO accessible and double-tapping some of
them will present sub-categories, and eventually a VO accessible list of video
titles will show and the User can interact as described in the “Watch List”
section above.
Tapping the Search button presents a VO accessible search bar near the top of
the screen. The list of search results is also accessible and the User can
interact with the items as mentioned.

Re: Podcast Epesodes listing problem.

2014-01-26 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Jim — I no longer use iTunes to manage and play podcasts, so I went through
the process of adding a random podcast from those listed in the iTunes Store
and then took the following steps to view the list of downloaded episodes for
that subscription. I am running the latest releases of itunes and Mavericks,
and I have the sidebar turned on in iTunes and the Show Podcasts checkbox
ticked in the General section of iTunes Prefs.

1. Interact with the iTunes sidebar (aka the Sources Table) and navigate to
Podcasts to select it.
2. Stop interacting with the sidebar and then press VO+RIght Arrow until VO
says List, radio button four of four.” Press VO+Spacebar to select the List
radio button.
3. Press VO+Right Arrow until VO says “Podcasts Table.”
4. Interact with this table. Here I am able to navigate by column and row using
standard VO+Arrow keys. Pressing VO+\ on a podcast subscription expands it to
show a list of downloaded episodes for that subscription.

Re: VoiceOver and long alt text descriptions

2014-01-18 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Aleeha,

Welcome to the list. This is an interesting question. Are you certain these
problematic long descriptions are coded as Alt text? Are you able to hear these
descriptions using a different screen reader? If you browse through the various
lists of elements in the web rotor (VO+u) and the list of all items as
displayed in the item chooser (VO+i), do you hear them read anywhere? Are you
experiencing this issue on any other websites? Are you able to provide a link
to an example problem so other members of the list can try to troubleshoot?
Have you tried working the site with a browser other than the stock Safari?
I’ve had a number of issues where the current version of Safari will not read
certain items on certain websites, the most common issue being with headings.
Two popular alternative browsers are Google Chrome and Webkit. I’d recommend
trying the latest nightly build of Webkit, which can be downloaded from
webkit.org.

Cheers,

Currently, I have a test assignment that I am trying with a Mac
running the latest OS. The question of concern is one in which the
images are tied to radio buttons and are graphs with extremely long
text descriptions in the alt field. VoiceOver, however, won't read
them, even though image verbosity is set to all. The funny thing is
that VoiceOver will read the alt text associated with other images on
the site, but this text is much shorter. To give an example, the
longer alt text might read a bit like this:
This is a graph of two random curves. The first curve begins at
(-5,7) and continues down and to the right, ending at (5,-8). The
second curve begins at (-2,1) and continues up and to the right,
 ending at (4,6).
All the short alt text says, in general, is your answer is correct.
Does anyone have suggestions as to how to make VoiceOver read this content?

2014-01-15 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Chris — Have a good trip, and I hope this response isn’t too late to help.
I’ve been satisfied with the paid version of the Ascendo Spanish English
Dictionary +” app. I’ve pasted the link to the free version below. The
differences between free and paid versions are listed in the app’s description.
Most parts of this app are accessible with VO, and all content is local with
the exception of the spoken versions of words and phrases, both of which
require an active Internet connection. You can search the dictionary using
ENglish or Spanish words, and each entry can be navigated using standard VO
methods. In the phrases section each phrase is followed by two unlabeled
buttons. These 2 buttons play spoken English Spanish versions of the phrase
respectively. Automatic language switching does not seem to work in this app,
but if you have a Spanish voice in your language rotor you can toggle it to get
an approximation.

Note that this is the US version. I’m not sure if it will be available to you
if you live outside the US.

Hi Paul — I’m not particularly happy with some of the changes in Mavericks
Calendar, but I’m able to modify alerts using the following steps. Note that
none of my calendar events are google-based, so I’ can’t speak to possible
differences in behavior that might be related to google calendar events viewed
in Calendar.app. Also, while I do have several google mail accounts, I use my
me.com account for email alerts in Calendar.
1. Highlight the existing event in Calendar.
2. Press Cmd+i to open the Inspector.
3. Navigate to the existing alert(s).
4. Press VO+Spacebar to activate the alert’s popup button.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the popup list and select Custom.
6. Here I am presented with the following list of choices: Message, Message
with sound, email, or Open File. Selecting one of these provides additional
options depending on context.
7. Make the desired changes and press OK to save them.

Re: ABBYY FineReader Pro now available for the Mac

2013-12-10 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Michael,

Sorry, but I’m still not clear on exactly what you mean by “batch processing
and I’m very interested in figuring this one out, so I’ll list the questions
that still come to mind. Some of these questions stem from my relative lack of
experience with other scanning applications, particularly ones that combine the
scanning, OCR and output processes into a single application. I’m mostly
familiar with this as a two step process, first importing a paper document
using either the MAC’s built-in scanning function found in Preview or a third
party app such as VueScan and second, using Finereader Express to OCR and save
the imported document in other formats.

1. What are the exact steps you have used in other OCR applications to perform
this batch process? Please be as specific as possible. List the hardware you
use, the exact steps you follow, the exact order these steps take, the expected
behavior of the computer during the batch processing, the expected end results,
etc.

2. You said it is possible to, inport lots of PDF files into finreader and it
will OCR the documents into text and you can save them in other formats.” Can
you provide more detail on how exactly this differs from FineReader Express,
which itself has the ability to import lots of PDF files, OCR them, and save
them in various other formats.

3. When you use the term “batch scanning,” are you referring to a process that
handles existing digital files, paper documents, or both?

4. Are you interested in having the scanning and OCR processes overlap? In
other words, in other Apps are you able to place multiple pages into your
scanner and then tell the OCR application to import those pages and
automatically start the OCR process while the paper documents are still being
imported from the scanner? Or does the import finish first and then the OCR
process automatically begin afterward? How automated should the entire process
be?

5. Are you able to stack a number of different documents of varying page
lengths into the sheet-scanner and have the OCR application automatically
recognize the beginning and end page of each document and scan each into it’s
own individual file that is automatically OCR’d?

Thanks again,
Bryan

Re: ABBYY FineReader Pro now available for the Mac

2013-12-10 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Michael,

Thank you for the additional clarification. It looks like ABBYY FineReader Pro
for Mac can do what you are asking. Following your outline, I was able to
import 5 PDF files at once and have them all OCR’d and saved as individual TXT
files in one test scenario and DOCX files in a second scenario. Here are the
steps I followed to do this.

1. I placed the 5 sample PDF files in their own folder inside the Documents
folder on my Mac.

2. I launched ABBYY FineReader Pro for Mac.

3. I chose File / New. This opens the “New Task” window. In this window there
are a couple of unlabeled or mislabeled items, but the important sections are
accessible with VO. It takes a few minutes of navigating through the elements
on this screen to get them figured out, but essentially there are two working
modes to choose from: A “Quick Conversion” mode and a standard mode. I’m not
sure of all the differences, but the Quick conversion offers 4 output formats,
while the standard mode offers 12 output formats. I tested using the MS Word
output format in Quick Conversion and the TXT output format in the standard
mode.

4. In both cases I was prompted to select the source file(s) using a standard
OSX file selection dialog where I selected all 5 of the PDF source files at
once and then selected the Export button to start the conversion process.

5. The conversion process took a couple of minutes and there was a cryptic
status message displayed during this process.

6. At the end of the conversion I was presented with a dialog box telling me I
would have better luck working with 600 DPI sources. I closed this message and
was presented with another dialog box that included a popup with an option to
Create a separate file for each source file” and then the process finished.

I looked in Finder and found that a subfolder for the TXT and one for the DOCX
output files had been created inside my test folder and the converted files had
been placed inside those folders Each file had the same name as it’s original
PDF file but with the TXT or DOCX extension instead.
That’s the short version of the story, but I hope it helps. There were a
number of other options I ignored during the process, and I’m sure someone here
or on AppleVis will do a podcast or a more thorough write-up as time permits.

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Any good reason not to go to ios7?

2013-12-01 Thread Bryan Jones
I like some of the new features in IOS7 and am happy with Apple’s continuing
commitment to building out the accessibility options in IOS, but there are some
functions on my ATT iPhone 4S that do not work as well under IOS7 as they did
under the last version of IOS6, though things have improved dramatically
between the initial release of IOS7 and the current 7.0.4 release. Here are a
few of the issues I am still experiencing:

- The time is not always read aloud when pressing the home or sleep/wake
buttons on the lock screen.
- swiping between time/date/notification/unlock/camera on the lock screen is
buggy. Sometimes the swipes work, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they jump
around randomly. Note that this flaky swiping behavior also occurs in some
other areas of IOS, not just the lock screen.
- Not all item count labels are read. For example, counts of unread mail
messages as listed at the top of an open mailbox.
- As with any OS update, some third party apps become broken under IOS 7 and
not all have been — or will be — fixed.
- Most day-to-day functions feel slower on my 4S under IOS7 than they did under
IOS6. This of course is to be expected as a normal part of the standard
computing device lifecycle, but it is worth noting for folks who might not be
aware of that cycle.
- Some folks are not happy with the low-vision functions in IOS7. I don’t use
these much anymore, but I can tell you for sure the white-on-black setting was
not applied consistently throughout the OS and Apple’s own Apps.

HTH,
Bryan

Re: Printing Word Document Correctly.

2013-11-17 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi David,

In the off chance Anne’s suggestion doesn’t produce the desired results, you
might consider trying the sledgehammer approach AKA install MS Office for Mac.
While MS Office 2011 for Mac does not provide the ability to view or edit Word
documents, the menu bar and printing functions in Office 2011 Mac are VO
accessible, and, interestingly, the print preview thumbnails displayed within
the print dialog box are also somewhat VO accessible. For complex DOC or DOCX
files, it might be a workable solution if cross-platform maintenance of
formatting is critical and if printing, rather than reviewing or editing, is
the goal.

I’ve found I can open a Word document in Word 2011, press Command+P to open the
Print dialog box, and access all available print options by using standard VO
navigation keys to move through the print dialog. VO will also read the page
currently displayed in the print preview thumbnail, and I can even interact
with that thumbnail and navigate through it. Make sure the “Copies Pages”
item is selected in the popup menu, and make sure the checkbox labeled “Show
Quick Preview” is ticked.

Here in the US, MS offers a trial download with a number of setup options as
listed below. I’m guessing similar options are available outside of the US. A
web search for mac office 2011 trial download turns up several official
Microsoft sites hosting the download links. The install process is fully VO
accessible. Upon first launch of any of the Office apps the User is presented
with VO-accessible dialogs, one of which ass how you would like to run Office.
The options go something like this:
1. Insert a license key.
2. Sign into an existing Office 365 subscription.
3. Run as fully functioning 30 day demo.
4. Run permanently as a document viewer without editing capabilities.

HTH,
Bryan

Anybody using a VO accessible full-featured project manager on the Mac?

2013-11-15 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Folks,

I’m looking for a full-featured project management application that is VO
friendly. If you are using such and wouldn’t mind a few questions, please reply
on or off list. I will consider a web-based option, but would prefer a native
application. It does not need to be multi-user or network-savvy.

Please do not reply with pointers to basic GTD apps, to-do, lists, spreadsheet
templates, IOS apps or things you’ve heard about but not tried personally.

Thanks in advance.
Bryan

Re: mavericks mail and attachments.

Hi Donal Zack — Is it a particular type of attachment you’re having trouble
with? I just tested with some PDF attachments by highlighting the attachment in
the body of the message, pressing VO+Shift+M, selecting Open With…. Preview. I
also was able to do it via QuickLook. The PDFs opened in Preview without issue.

This is on a 2011 MBA running the current public release of Mavericks with the
Mail update they put out a few days ago.

Re: Safari 6.1 bug?

Yes, I can confirm this behavior is happening on my 2011 MBA under ML. In fact,
I can replicate it with the latest versions of other Webkit-based browsers
Chrome Webkit Nightly, so perhaps it is a flaw in the current webkit code. It
wouldn’t be the first time this particular bug has slipped into webkit. As I
reported previously on this list, I am experiencing similar behavior under
Mavericks.

I’m not sure how to back-level Safari, but perhaps you might have some luck
installing one of the archived webkit versions from August or Sept. You can

Re: Safari 6.1 bug?

2013-11-03 Thread Bryan Jones
An update to my note about Webkit versions: After installing today's Webkit
Nightly builds, the headings issues *appear* to be resolved for me on both ML
Mavericks. With this current version I am not experiencing the following
headings issues, though they still exist in Safari Chrome Canary: Google
search results were showing just a few items under headings; Comments in
Applevis postings were displaying the comment number with no associated heading
text; Amazon search results were displaying just a small part of each heading.

YMMV, use at your own risk, etc. Other things might be broken in these versions.

The version numbers reported are:

On ML:
Version 6.1 (8537.71, 538+)

On Mavericks:
Version 7.0 (9537.71, 538+)

Update: Jump to top / bottom of column in Mavericks Mail message list

2013-10-30 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Folks — Can anyone verify that Command+Option+up/down arrow keys are now
initiating the jump to top/bottom of a message list in Mavericks Mail?

I finally got around to installing the public release of Mavericks and, as
others have mentioned, found I was no longer able to use the Option+up/down
arrow keys to jump to the top or bottom of a column in the Mail message list.
However, I am now able to instead perform this jump using the
Command+Option+up/down arrow keys. This is working for me in both standard and
classic mail views, and leaves focus in the same column in classic view. This
keystroke does not require waiting a moment as the previous Tiger - SL versions
did. The jump happens immediately. Sorry Esther, as far as I can tell it does
not seem to recognize threads in any way.

This is on a 2011 MBA running the latest Mavericks release with all software
updates.

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Has anybody else noticed a recent change in the interpretation of Headings in the web rotor?

2013-10-30 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Zack and Others — After upgrading to the current Mavericks release, this
issue seems cleared up in most situations. . However, I’m still experiencing it
in search results in Amazon. Can you try the following and let me know what
your results are?
1. Go to amazon.com.
2. Search for an item, in my case I tried Macbook Air.
3. Bring up the web rotor and arrow through the list of headings. In my case,
after the first few items in the list the results simply show “by Apple” as the
heading.
4. However, if I navigate the results using VO+COmmand+H, I hear the full text
of each of those headings, for example heading level 3 2 items link Apple
MacBook Air MD760LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) by Apple

Thanks again,
Bryan

Is anyone successfully using the MacUpdate Desktop with VO under Mavericks?

2013-10-30 Thread Bryan Jones
Thought I’d pose this question here while waiting a response from
desk...@macupdate.com.

I’ve been able to download and install the latest 5.2.3 Macupdate Desktop
package, but on first launch it simply goes into a non-responding state. I’ve
tried launching with VO off but after I toggle VO back on there seems to be no
difference. A quick web search didn’t reveal a solution.

This is on a clean install of Mavericks on my 2011 MBA.

Thanks for any ideas,
