Re: [MBZ] Butchers: Best splice for high current wires

2015-12-08 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
Curly, et al.
I have used crimp connector successfully for years. The crimper that I use is a
Thomas and Betts staking crimper. This has a small 'tang' in the crimping area
that welds the connector and the wire together by pressure. Makes the crimp
almost impossible to undo, though I tried it out of curiosity once, very
difficult and a mess when finished. The 'standard' crimpers are worthless, all
that they do is squeeze the connector tube into a sort of oval. To be complete,
the join must be a gas-tight connection. Electricians use pliers, usually Klein
Tools, or some copy made in a faraway place, to crimp copper caps over wires
for grounds, (usually). So, with the correct tool, crimping butt connectors
does work. There are also butt connectors that have glue in them to form an
heat activated shrink seal after crimping. I have used that type to attach the
wires to a well pump that still works as designed, lo these many years.
Confused yet?
YMMV

Subject: [MBZ] Butchers: Best splice for high current wires

This apparently didn't go out, but seems some may have seen it.

In case all y'all have not been following the saga of POSitive, the
"new" 87 300D, tonight I found the butchers had cut all the wires in
back of the ign switch, rather than umplug the plug and plug it into
a new switch, and hat would have been unnecessary had they simply
replaced the ign key lock with a new key lock.

One wire was burned clear through, one hanging by a few strands and a
couple more fell out of the butt connectors when I started moving
things around.

the wires on plug were cut very near the plug, so the first order is
to get another plug with wires long enough to splice.

that brings up the question:

What is the best way to splice the wires to allow full current?
Several are roughly 10 GA and the purple is maybe 20 ga. If there
was room to get the harness out to work on it, I'd solder em with a
torch. There is no room for that under the dash.We know the
heater burned 25 amp fuses, leading to the separate 30 amp strip fuse
under the hood.

The butchers used crimp on butt connectors, leading to the heater/acc
wire burning through and others are less than good connections. The
best solution is to take out the whole donor harness and replace it,
but I have the feeling that would be perhaps worse than an
evapectomy. Some splice should work. I don't thing there is enough
room in there for wire nuts. Wire nuts allow near full current with
little loss.

What's the best way to splice wires without taking up a lot of space
or soldering the splice?

On the "new" 300D, the left rear LCA has a loose joint at the
outside. This is the bushing in the wheel carrier.Has anyone
successfully replaced this? I took the wheel carriers to the local
alignment shop before, but don't have that here. The official tool
is something like $225, and I don't want to spend that much.

Ja, I know, Dave M, has done it, but he has the official tool, and
more money to spend on cars than I do.

I'm wondering if it can be done properly with a bolt and sockets.

Spent yesterday replacing the rear subframe bushings. I'm getting
pretty good at it. No special tools, just jackstands and a good
floor jack. (also hammer and small chisel, and a screwdriver type
HF prybar) The new ones were Boge in Lemforder boxes from
RMEuropean. I think I could do it in may 2 hours next time.

This time I coated the new parts with soapy water, then ran a bead
of dawn around the leading edge. That worked much better, or the
Boge parts were a better fit than the last time.

Some pumpkins do not use axle bolts requiring the special wrench. Our
1982 240D and the 300D differential that went into it required draining
the gear oil, removing the back of the diff, and removing a circlip for
each half-shaft.

I seem to have 2 124 Diesels ( 87 300D) with non working tachometers.

I have a couple of spare Klimas, so I can try swapping them and the
OVP relay to start. I did that on one of them before with no change.
Also tried direct ground on the cluster with no effect. OVP relays,
I have to swap from another car, but that is possible.

Anyone BTDT? One idles real slow, then fast, then slow, etc without
any apparent rhyme or reason. The other just idles too slow. I am
pretty sure the idle speed and the tach are related some how.

Where does the tach signal originate? The tach signal goes to the
klima, then out, I believe.

Possible self destructing insulation on the wire bundles? I thought
87 Diesels were prior to the problems.

There is an ABS sensor plug with an o-ring, you may need to renew that o-ring.

The bolts for the half axles (and the half-moon washers) are one-time-use, but
you'll probably be safe if you clean the bolts with a wire brush and use
lock-tite.

Other than that, just dirty, heavy work. Watch out for damaging the SLS
hydraulic lines.

Working on a 124, blower not working. It used to work a while but would
blow fuse. Replaced fuse and at some point it quit working again but
fuse if not blow. I am getting no power to either side of the fuse.
Where should I look for the issue? Trying to locate wiring diagram now.

[MBZ] Lubricheck.

2015-11-08 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
Bought one and tried it on 4 cars.

1 Volvo V40.

One 190Dt

Two '87 300TD

The Volvo and TDs showed good readings and the 190Dt was very bad.

The Volvo reads 2 on the scale, due for an oil change according to time/mileage.

The 300TDs showed very good on a scale of 1-10 read 1.

They have been used regularly.

The 190Dt has been off the road for 4 years and only infrequently run in the
driveway. This showed 9 (in the red) on the 1-10 scale.

I know that this is only a comparative measurement and will need to be verified
by a lab test.

YMMV

Subject: [MBZ] OT - GEORGE TALES-SUPPLY

Yep, another one already.

GEORGE - SUPPLY
By Wilton Strickland, LtCol, USAF (Ret)

Not long after I arrived at George, our paint shop foreman asked me to
go to the base Laundromat with him to study a problem with the painted floor
and offer suggestions for a solution. He had been frustrated for years by
not being able to get the paint to adhere properly. "In spite of all we've
tried, it bubbles up and just peels off," he said.
At the laundry, I immediately noticed that the floor was nearly covered
with little "pimple-looking" bubbles. I reached down and popped several of
the bubbles and found them filled with water. I stood and said to the
painter, "Water vapor is rising through the concrete and condensing under
the paint causing it to bubble and peel. The concrete obviously does not
have a vapor barrier beneath it and would work better not painted at all,
though it may not look so good. This would allow the water vapor to
evaporate and never be noticed. Let me think about it overnight. I'll talk
to you about again tomorrow."
Late that afternoon, I went to the local Sears store for something,
and, as I approached the hardware department, I noticed indoor/outdoor
carpet on the floor. I suddenly had the solution to the laundry floor
problem! The next day, I told the painter, "Remove the paint from the floor
and install indoor/outdoor carpet with a short pile. Don't glue it to the
floor. Make sure it's porous, of course, the water vapor must be allowed to
rise through the carpet and evaporate." We never had another problem with
the Laundromat floor.
Most of my Air Force time before George was in B-47 aircraft
maintenance (crew chief) and B-52 flight operations, both of which had a
significantly higher supply priority than civil engineering maintenance
parts. Early in my tour at George, I became very frustrated by the
sluggishness and inefficiency of the overall Air Force supply system. This
was best illustrated when a housewife on base called me and vented her
frustration at not having a working kitchen faucet for well over six months.
I asked our mechanical section superintendent to investigate the situation.
A couple of hours later, he showed me several pieces of paperwork indicating
that a part costing less than two dollars had been on order for the
offending faucet for several months. He assured me that the plumbers were
doing all they could to repair the faucet; it was up to the supply system to
provide the part.
I told him, "A stack of papers a mile high will not make water run in
that lady's sink. Please take this five-dollar bill and stop by a hardware
store on your way home tonight, get the appropriate part and see that the
faucet is fixed tomorrow."
Late the next morning, he reported that the faucet had been repaired
and handed me approximately $3 in change from my five-dollar bill. (By the
way, if the faucet had been in my home, even on base, I would have taken
some personal initiative to find the part and get the faucet fixed myself
instead of waiting for "Uncle" to provide everything. Of course "Uncle" had
promised to do it, so, indeed, it was our responsibility to do so.)
A few months later, our electrical section superintendent came into the
office and told me that he had been at the Wing Commander's house trying to
repair a dimmer switch for a dining room chandelier. The commander's wife
was quite upset that she would be unable to have the chandelier working
properly for a dinner party she was having that evening. The superintendent
told her that he could replace the switch immediately with a simple on/off
switch, but it would probably take six months or more to get the proper
dimmer. I told him to follow me home, just around the corner about 3 houses
from the commander's home. There, I gave him an appropriate dimmer that my
brother, an electrical wholesaler in NC, had given me a couple of years
before. When the ordered dimmer arrived by way of the regular supply system
several months later, the superintendent came in and laid it on my desk to
replace the one I had provided.
I could not understand why we could not have a system to allow us to
buy hardware and materials from local hardware stores and building supply
centers. These vendors would be glad to get the business and would keep a
supply of parts and materials readily available or be able to get it much
faster than the regular Air Force supply system was doing. I learned later
that, by coincidence, such a system was already being planned. The system,
called COCESS (Contractor Operated Civil Engineering Supply Store), required
a contractor to keep a certain number of parts

Ok thanks. A few more questions if I may:

1. Anyone have a part number for an A/C evaporator for an 87 wagon? Seems
to be $517 list from MB. I want a copper one, but that is truly spendy.

2. Do heater cores go bad in 87 w124s?

3. Do 87 w124 cars suffer from the center vent actuator failure problem?

Thinking I should replace everything while the dash is out.

The prechamber tool from Samstag is $56 plus shipping.

The part is made in Serbia by 4M company part No. 4M-008 for 15 Euros about
$17-18.

I have seen the tool and it is shorter and more robust than the Sir Tools one.

If shipping was not too much, this would be a considerable savings over

I had both drains completed by 5 p.m.

"Guest" bath was a complete replacement, as the seat was severely corroded.
Went to our real hardware store, bought a special tool, Made in America. First
attempt at removing the old drain, no joy, it would not turn while I applied
the maximum safe torque I felt would not brake the four post cross at the
bottom of the drain. Ran hot water over it for a couple minutes, and then it
came out. Took old drain back to hardware store to get a perfect replacement.
About $35 for tool, new drain, small tub of plumbers putty.

Master bath has a real brass drain, it only needed cleaning with a wire brush
and a new O-ring, 39 cents, plus some plumbers grease.

[MBZ] Small Mystery Solved.

2015-09-23 Thread Fred Moir via Mercedes
FFolks.

My rusty and not so trusty 124.193 lost it tach signal some time ago.

The loose shock tower that was breaking the ground strap also snapped a small
brown wire that is part of the tach circuit. Simple repair and now this non
driveable car has it's tachometer working: which also enables the idle circuit
control as well. There were two broken brown wires, the other one is still an
unknown.

Small steps. Vacuumed out the battery area, removing the last vestiges of the
battery tray's flakes and surveyed the damage. (Oh dear!). More to come. (Duck
and cover).

Loose shock tower. Self explanatory.
My rusty and not-so-trusty W124 wagon has a serious rust problem at the
battery/shock tower area. I'm still trying to decide whether to fix it, or not.
Dimitri proposed a Welding Q. We just need an enclosed space with light, heat,
power and a flat floor, a lift would be nice too. Dream on.

Swithun (Swithin) was an high church leader before the Norman invasion. He
seemed to prefer the common people to his peers and many "miracles" were
observed after his death.Supposedly he wanted to be buried by the side of the
road, so that people would walk over his grave and to let the rain from the
eaves fall upon him. Needless to say this did not set too well with the later
13th and 14th century churchmen and he was buried within the pale and inside
the church. It rained hard the day his remains were moved and so it is said

front exhaust pipe mount was missing one rubber thingummybob, which was

I have no answers at the moment.. Come Monday.. expect I may contact the
web site and see if it's just a concept or actually certified for flight
 and for sale..

If I grasp the design details correctly.. it has an on board fuel engine
that runs generator which drives electric motors.. actually, not a bad
concept over helicopter design for example, which uses shafts, gearboxes,
and complex couplings... in concept at least.. in actual application...
 lots of unanswered questions..

To fly it needs FAA certification.. That is no small feat..

plus $10 shipping, and then swing by LKQ Knackers tonight after work and
see if I could scrounge a good used tie rod assembly. Replace the used
assembly with the new at a later date TBD. Plan B is to purchase two new
tie rod ends from local Autoparts warehouse (Moog) for $90 and install
those tonight after work. Plan C is to execute the first part of Plan B
(get the new ends in hand), hold on to the receipt, execute Plan A on the
sly (but pay an extra $10 for overnight shipping) and delay the
installation until Saturday p.m. or later, and then return the Plan B parts
on Monday. Confess my modification of the plan after I can show Look

Re. the unsavory crap (sham, paper, classes) going on for nearly 20 years
at UNC-CH to accommodate athletes, an article in today's Raleigh News and
Observer, discusses two working groups (committee's) looking at UNC
integrity and policies. Co-chair said that they first want to define
integrity. To save 'em possibly several weeks of haggling, I'm volunteering
my definition of it learned on Momma and Daddy's laps and at their knees
nearly 80 years ago - put simply, integrity is the ability to do what is
right when nobody else is watching.

will now.I need to move Bent out of here, to be someone else's white elephant.

Definitely worth holding onto for spares if you've got the space. At a
minimum, I would keep the complete engine/transmission/differential/rear
hatch assembly/tail lights/rear bumper. If the interior is decent, the
carpet is unique as well as the rear seats and back, but gasser models of
newer vintage are out there too.

Take a close look at the rear sub-frame bushings on both wagons. The body
sheet metal was too thin / weak from the factory in the first years of the
124 wagon, and those bushing seats are subject to cracking.
