Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing images

Hi,
Play with the placement algorithms. Start with the basic Helmert with 2 or
more points. Anything more than 2 points and you will see where the distortions
come from and give you an idea of what your are dealing with. Finish with
Thin Plate Spline (TPS).

Re: [Qgis-user] extract Z value along line

2018-07-21 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
Or you could make a line, extract the nodes and then use the point sampling
tool. If you create a straight line with two nodes, you can densify the line.
This way, the nodes will be evenly spaced.

Re: [Qgis-user] qgz format and non-ascii project names

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I can’t confirm as I don’t have a computer in front of me but I have had
multiple problems in the past with people making paths with spaces or accents
in characters. (Including the user path in windows.). Best to stay with no
spaces and only “English” characters. This does not only apply to Qgis but it
is probably worse because of all the plugins. Not every programmer takes the
time to look at character tables in their code. (I am guilty as charged...)

Re: [Qgis-user] minimum and recommended specs for a laptop?

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

My experience is that over heating laptops is often caused by dust in old fans.
Fans can be changed or cleaned but it does take some skills to do that. A
shop can do it for 50-100$. The second problem is that companies use cheap
parts.

I would go the computer that has a cpu made with the finest lithography (14mn)
but even that will not help with a cheap computer. I did not look at the HQ
options you are referring to. Go to Intel and the the exact spect for the cpu
serial number. Look at lithography, cache, onboard video card ...

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/processors/core/i7-processors.html

Gaming laptops may help as they are generally made with more rugged parts. You
may also look at professional laptop built for CAD. They will generally come
with pro video cards that may not be very helpful but the rest of the computer
should be better built. I am usually happy with a pro level Lenovo laptop.
(Not found in a store). They last long, are more expensive but generally come
with a limited intel video card. That is the trade off.

My recommendations is that you should always consider the maximum memory you
can put in the laptop as that is the only upgrade you can do appart from the
HD. Make sure you can change the HD (not an option with most resent MACs). Buy
and SSD if you can. That is probably the most important option (along with
memory) you can select that will speed up large datasets.

Re: [Qgis-user] CRS was undefined: defaulting to CRS EPSG:4326 - WGS 84

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
The error as noted by other can come from the raster that has as missing CRS
file. Same reasoning applies to raster files. The .tiff format can have and
internal tag to specify the CRS. You can write the tag using gdal edit.

2018-07-19 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
You can simply left or right click the layer in the layer panel and define the
layer CRS. What you are seing is not an error but your default option to do
when your Qgis tries to open a file that does not contain a CRS. You can go to
your system setting to the section on “what to do when opening a file without a
CRS.” Select “ask” and not “use default CRS or use project CRS “.

Shp files (I guess you are using that format) uses a .prj extension file for
the CRS. If that file is missing, you will have that message.

Re: [Qgis-user] Contour Smoothing Issue

2018-07-18 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I find that the best way to do this is to smooth the raster before extracting
the contour lines. I guess the generalize plugin does not handle the z in the
shape files and therefore save the shp as a 2D file. Grass has good options
for generating contour lines and much of the noise can be reduced using the
Grass options.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and ESRI's ArcMAp

2018-06-29 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
Hard to answer but I used to be a big MapInfo, AutoCAD Map user. I usually
just use ESRI when other have problems I need to trouble shoot. Now, i am
almost exclusively QGIS. Like others say, it would be hard to make a list as
QGIS aim is not to just do what others do. It’s not a copy of other softwares.

There are currently two things that I would like to see in QGIS. The first is
a good raster calculator capable of dealing rapidly with HUGE rasters that
can’t fit into memory. (I am talking LiDAR huge over large territory.)
(Thankfully, the gdal calculator does it but it was more restrictions
(identical size,CRS, pixel posting..). I AM not sure ESRI has a flexible way of
doing that.

ESRI also has the concept of a raster database. That is not implemented but
when you think about it, it’s easy to just keep track of the descriptive values
in another table.

I see others have well responded so I will just add that QGIS does not look for
a license when it starts up unlike other proprietary cad and Gis software that
either look for a license during the install or when the software is running

Re: [Qgis-user] How can I display satellite images in hdf format in RGB color?

2018-06-24 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Try gdal_translate with the -sds switch. You find a GUI version in the raster
menu or in processsing. That should split all your bands into individual
single band tiff. Then you will need to figure out what band you want to
display to make the rgb. Maybe the semi automatic classification plugin has an
easier way of doing this.

-sds:
Copy all subdatasets of this file to individual output files. Use with formats
like HDF or OGDI that have subdatasets. The output file naming scheme has
changed in GDAL 1.11 (e.g. ofile_1.tif, ofile_2.tif).

Re: [Qgis-user] how many layers

2018-06-24 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I am not sure what you meet by « preset ». But if you are talking about the
maximum number of files, it is several hundred. I think I was having problems
after around 512 shape files. I am not sure the source of this limitation.
Some says it’s a windows limit, others says it’s a C limite. What even the
case, I solved my problem by using Saga on windows 7 and 10.

This limit seems less of a problem in Linux as the max number of open file it
can be changed but you should be able to open more than 10 files.

It would help if you added what Operating System you are using, what type of
files you are opening and the error messages you are getting.

files. The order of the files are from bottom to top except for null pixels.
QGIS 2.x gave you more options then QGIS 3. :(.

Re: [Qgis-user] trying to convert geotiff UTM toWGS84

2018-06-18 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
If you are using gdal translate with -a_srs "EPSG:4326", you are simply
overwriting the CRS in the file. That is likely messing thing up as the file is
not actually reprojected.

Hi,

Just use the field calculator to create a new column with the length. Then you
can save the file in csv and export it to Excel.

Re: [Qgis-user] Unable to load project

Hi,
Simply because the express desktop will usually install most of what I need.
As I also need special packages and libraries for programming in python, I
usually add those after. I just got used to do it like and as I often do the
install on multiple computers, I find it a little bit faster.

I agree. Pick your battles! I have done the same for my PH.D. When open

2.18 is not a fall back. It is a few years newer than 2.8x

Personally, I suggested you go to 3.0 to test to see if the problems you were
having can from a broken QGIS installation. The fact that the project did open
in an older version of QGIS does indicate that this was the case. As 3.0 can
live without affecting 2.x so that looked like a good testing option. Seeing
you don’t enjoy playing around much with you versions, going for the latest LTR
2.18 looks like the better option. If you do that, I would recommend you
completely uninstall both versions of QGIS on your compter as bugs found in
setting could be passed along the latest 2.18 version. Do this when you have
time.

If you move to 3 this is not an issues. You should have a fresh install. I
would wait the 10 days as suggested below and go to 3.2.

The only real reason not to migrate to 3.2 is If you have a number of specific
plugins you absolutely need. Some are not yet ported to QGIS 3. I could check
for you if you send a list of your installed plugins. Also, some gdal tool
have missing parameters or options in 3.0. This may fixed in 3.2. If you don’t
know what I am talking about, or if you use gdal outside of QGIS, this is not
an issus.

This install will give you options to install all GIS desktop packages an easy
way. Start with that. All the needed software will be installed but you will
not have the options to select 2.x or 3.x. You will be in 3.x. Then run the
install with the advanced option and have a look at how it works. There, you
could select extra software or packages. If you are super nervous, install
Teamviewer (google it) and I could help with the installation from my home. I
am on Montreal time.

Ok but are having problems so things are broken.

There is the easy install and the OSGEO instal. The latest will give you more
choices, like installing many versions or additional packages. You can also
simply ask it to install all desktop package without having to ask yourself to
many questions. The only disadvantage is that it does not really provide a
good mechanism for uninstalling Qgis. You sometimes need to do it manually
when things get complicated. That is my preferred install method. I think the
easier Qgis install has a complete remove option usually found in windows.

According to the Anita Grazer link I sent you, 2 and 3 store the settling and
plugins in different places. Anita is my guru. If she said it was safe... it
is safe! But I also tried it and what she said is correct. 2 and 3 live
together and do not interact but yes, the problem is real in many cases, just
not this time.

Some installs are for stable long term support (LTS). Some are under
development (DEV). Qgis3,0 is what they call early adopters (so it is more
likely to have bug but they have all the latest bling). The nightly builds are
version containing the most resent fixes. Generally speaking, I go with the
LTS at work and other versions at home.

Fix problems when you have time. Plan for extra time. Backup you data
regularly so if shit hits the fan... you have a copy of all your files. This
is just common good sense computer user practice. Consider the problems you
create and solve as a learning experience and not an obstacle. Things get much
less stressful if you know that you can only loose time and not your important
data.

Therefore your Qgis 2.10 is probably at fault and a update will more likely
give you a more stable environment with better and newer features. Remember
that opening a Qgis project from a higher version to a Lower version can lead
to problems so make sure you add the Qgis version in the name of the file.

Things have probably improved since... that is why and upgrade is justified.

Well we see that this is not easy for you. I sometimes feel the same sitting
in front of a Mac where my reflexes are not as sharp as with windows. Again,
do it if when you have the time, consider this as a learning experience and not
an obstacle. Backup your data when doing something you are not sure of and use
community support.

Re: [Qgis-user] Converting X Y Coordinates to Latitude/Longitude

2018-06-07 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi David,

I’am an archaeologist working in Québec. If you vectorized the map in a local
CRS, all you need to do is do a « save as » and change the CRS (coordinate
reference system) that is in Longitude Latitude. If your map is not
georefenrenced (that is, you just scanned the map and did not use a CRS, that
is more complicated but not impossible. I usually fixe that do in a CAD but I
am sure you can do it in QGIS. We could talk if you want and I could help you
out figured the next steps and steps to avoid this problem (like georefereing
the raster map before you start) .Send me an email directly.

You could look at this also.

Re: [Qgis-user] Coordinate Conversion

2018-06-07 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I am not sure about v.transforme but GDA94 is handled in QGIS. I imagine that
this is not the case with the local projection and that you are trying to find
the transformation? Usually, my way to deal with this is to contact the local
governments. They normally have software to convert local grids when these are
not widely used. If you have the epgs code, you could download the grid
parameters and create a custom projection using the proj4 parameters.

Hi,
You could create and save a style based on the attributes.

I am surprised that Qgis can use the styles found in the dxf.

Re: [Qgis-user] Preserving geometry when batching joins

2018-05-29 Thread Nicolas Cadieux

Hi,

It appears that the join attributes table found in the 2.18 processing
joins tables but not like the "Joins" found in the layer property.  You
are right, there is no option to save as a shp file! Only database
formats.

Your best option is to use the field calculator in the point shp file
and to create a new column with the geometries x and y. Then you can
join the table and save as a csv.  Then, reimport the csv and use the x
and y to recreate the points geometry.

OR

The problem is solved by using Qgis 3 where you can save as a .shp.

Re: [Qgis-user] hide vector under raster?

2018-05-29 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

If you are having crashes, try on 2.18 to see if you have the same problem.
Are you using on the fly reprojection? If your vector file is not in the same
format as the raster, the reprojection is probably taking all the time. Try
saving in an other format like spatialite that is more efficient than shp.
Copy the file on a local disk and not a file server. Make a new project with
only the raster and the vector files to make try and isolate the crash problem.
 Disable all plugins.

Perhaps the control rendering order in the layer order panel can help? Not
sure, I don’t use that.

Hi,

I suggest you load the value tool plugin to get local pixel values. I have no
idea what image format you are using so I can’t help you much. It would be
nice to have a sample. In the layer properties, you can select what bands to
use. Perhaps a you have band 123 for rGB and other bands for the thermal info?

File formats accepted by Qgis are those ( to my knowledge) accepted by gdal.

Re: [Qgis-user] aux.xml files

2018-05-21 Thread Nicolas Cadieux

Hi world,

Ok I figured it out. As it turns out, the *aux.xml file is generated
when the raster band does not contain the statistics data.  I first
removed all this data using gdal_edit with the "-unsetstats" command.
Then used the "-stats" command and voilà!!! no more pesky xml files for
all files!

For some reason, using the -stats command only,  did not do the job as I
had tried that before writing this email.  I first needed to -unsetstats
before.

Cheers!

Nicolas

Re: [Qgis-user] interpolation help

2018-05-21 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I am not sure what you want to do? We need more information. It would help if
you put the files on a google drive so we can see them, if the information is
not confidential.

It would help if you indicated what you want to achieve. Are you trying to
get a 3D image with 100m pixels? A sharper or smoother looking map? Or are you
trying to just take the 15km grid resolution netcdf file and shop it up into
smaller 100m pixels? Keep in mind that you can’t generate reliable 100m
information by just changing the resolution of the 15 km file. Even a nice
interpolation of the 15 km data by using sampling point, will never give you
reliable weather at a smaller 100m level. At best, you could create a nicer
looking map containing rubbish information.

Try to explain what is not working to that we can help you out. If you are not
comfortable in English, I speak French and Spanish also (but my knowledge of
GIS Spanish words is null!)

Are both maps geofenced (one on top to the other) when you open them in Qgis?
What is your ultimate goal? What problem are you trying to solve?

Cheers!
Nicolas

Re: [Qgis-user] Problem georeferencing images in UTM

2018-05-18 Thread Nicolas Cadieux

Hi,

NAD27 does touch the northern part of South America but you are correct
in saying that it does not extend in Brazil.  I wrote the comments when
I was still trying to figure out where the maps were in the world.  I
often get problems with NAD27 vs NAD83 grid in Canada as many maps have
been printed with the errors in NAD27 military grid reference system.
In those cases, error in much bigger than the standard 30 to 100 metres
error so that was my working hypotheses.   People assume that adjoining
maps use the same CRS and that is often not the case in remote areas.

I was reprojecting the Google map image to the local CRS in order to
figure out the distortion and not using the  WGS 84 Pseudo Merc
coordinates. It's important, like to say to know that there are
differences between the web merc and the various  WGS 84 realizations.
I would like to see the numbers out of curiosity if you have them. I
often wonder why these projections were invented.

BTW, the problem was solved when we used the TPS transformation and not
the linear transformation.

Cheers,

Nicolas

First, the data has nothing to do with the NAD27 / NAD83 datum's
since these are North American datum's and they don't apply I believe
in South America. Moreover, the separation between NAD27 to NAD83 is
about 100m. I think Carlos mention something like being 400m off.

Another point of confusion is about the projection of Google Earth.
Google is using a Web Mercator projection based on a perfect sphere.
This has nothing to do with the UTM that has already incorporate the
Earth Flattening values into the Northing and Easting equations.

If I find some time tomorrow, I will come back and give the proper
equations showing the difference between Google's projection and UTM.

These are official maps so the utm grid is ok. I figured that I was
using a linear transformation, with the option to just create the
world file, which works for control points at the corners
(lat/long), since the boundaries of the map is defined by
latitude/longitude. With UTM, this simple transformation won't work,
but TPS will give the correct results.

Hi,

I am looking at your maps now. If I understand, it works with lat long but not
the UTM Coordinates. It could be a mistake in the utm grid. Perhaps one utm
grid is in NAD27 and the other in NAD83. That could explain the shift.
I will look at it.

Re: [Qgis-user] Raster calculator questions

2018-05-04 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I am not sure of what you mean in the first part of the question but yes, you
must create the output file to receive the output from the calculator.

As for the second part, QGIS currently has a big limitation with the raster
calculator. I have been trying to get them to work on this for the past few
years because I cannot use it for lidar data. The problem is (as I understand
it) that the rasters must all be loaded into memory in order to do the math.
Before, QGIS just crashed. Not, they have that message. I can complain all I
want but I am not able to be part of the solution (beginner coding skills) so I
gave them rasters to test so they can figure out the problem.

I can only imagine that your rasters, once loaded into memory, are probably
close to the max memory of your computer. If you change the CRS, you probably
add a new layer into the memory. My guess is that you are therefore running
out of memory. Therefore you get the error.

I am only speculating. The obvious step is to ask the coders to rework the
QGIS raster calculator but that is complicated. Ultimately, the new calculator
would need to be able to chop the problems in little bits, multiprocess the
math, possibly offload the math to the GPU and be able to work without loading
the files into memory. For now, I use the gdal calculator but that has more
limitations (same CRS, same pixel posting and extent... ) than the QGIS
calculator but it can work with huge raster.

Or this

Ideally, you should figure out the exact style you need to use.

Hi Calvin,

I see a lot of people have been corresponding. I am an archaeologist and can
help if you don’t figure thing out. How many points are you looking at? You
could also use cloud compare to make a DEM. I use Gdal grid with nearest

Hi,
I would do a bug report https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal. Have you tried fixing the
geometry before exporting? The problem could be in the tab file. You could
try to save in another format to see if the error is also reproduced.

Re: [Qgis-user] Free/Open Data Maps list

2018-02-27 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

The Quickmap plugin is indeed full of data specially if you add the extra
providers in the plugin settings. Most importantly, it gives you an idea of
who is giving what data. After that, you can find the original data (much more
useful) from the provider. I do the same thing with wms. If you google ,for
example, “wms Canada nrcan”, you will find many links to various servers
providing wms layers. After that, you can search for the original data
sources from these providers.

It could also help if you specify the region you are working on.
Cheers!

Re: [Qgis-user] Can’t respond to the user list

2018-02-27 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Seems like the problem came from a nabble account created on Osgeo site to
access the Qgis Québec user list. Both the nabble account and my subscription
to the Qgis user list had the same email. Seems like I was receiving the Qgis
user list messages via the nabble archive service and not via the actual list.
I do not know how that actually happened and nothing was indicating me this was
happening. So I was writing to the list using my Qgis user list membership but
receiving the replies via the nabble archive service. Thanks Alexandre and
Richard for your help.

Cheers!

Is anyone aware if the Qgis raster calculator will be able to deal with very

Hi,
You can use R for PCA.
Use the R Commander package to add a GUI. R can be scary at first.

Hi,

Are you using the same interpolation methods? If you used nearest neighbour
normally and changed to cubic, if could take much more time for the same thing.
Check the file size and try with a smaller file. Could be a very simple

Hi Viktória,

I will be happy fill out the form. Did you make the forme using google sheets
and a form? It looks good. Can I suggest you check with the university to
make sure we don't need to fill in a consent form for the study? It would be a
waist of time having data and not be able to use it because of a missing
consent form. I am just asking based on my own university's policies. I also
know a friend to had trouble tracking down people that had answered some
question without such a form. You may not need to but please check with your
supervisor.

Good luck with your project. It would be nice to share the results with us
later.

Re: [Qgis-user] Issue with georeferencing plug-in

2017-05-07 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Make sure your project projection is in the same projection as the OSM layer.
Do not use reproject on the fly for now. If the new layer is created under the
osm layer in the layer panel, you need to place it above the OSM layer as both
are rasters. Later you can play with transparency or rendering on the raster
layer properties. You can also hide the OSM layer.

In order to figure out if you have a projection problem, hide the base map and
click on the georeferenced layer, then right click in the layer panel, select
zoom to layer extent. Turn on the basemap and try to figure where your
georeferenced map ends up. Look at the coordinates. That should help. You
need to carefully select the input (best guest) and output projection (the
basemap projection) in the georeferencer plugin.

Re: [Qgis-user] Map georeference question

2017-04-12 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

You can do this 2 way. When you are doing the georeferencing, you can select
"use 0 for transparency when needed." This can sometimes give good results but
can leave some transparent pixels in the map depending on the image.

Another way is to right click on the layer in the layer panel, to select layer
properties, than to go to transparency. You can add a temporary no data value
or play with the custom transparency options.

The no data entered here is temporary and will not be used in the raster math
for example. It is for the screen rendering only.

Re: [Qgis-user] degrees: is degr/min/sec still used? Or decimal preferable?

2017-04-10 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Other people have given you good mathematical /computational answers. Between
decimal degrees (dd) and d/m/s, i find that dd is easier to handle. However
the choice of using a degrees or a national CRS in meter or feet is not just
limited to the x and y coordinate format. If you are positioning only 2D point
data, I expect you can get away with it but if you have angles, distances,
heights, areas or volume to measure, then there are other parameters to take
into account in the CRS. X,y formats are then just one parameter in a much
more complexe CRS picture (like the geiod). The ultimate goal of all these CRS
is to reduce distortion for a particular type of measurement over a particular
part of the world. Therefore, depending on the problem, a CRS in degrees is
sometimes called for, and a sometimes not.

Hi,
Port 80 and 8080 are standard internet ports. Almost anything using the web

yes, i am sure it can be configured to use any port but using port 80 should

Re: [Qgis-user] Error in clipping a raster

2017-03-23 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

A raster can only be square or a rectangle. Try with a square or rectangle
region. You can use your current polygone but create a new one using the file
extent. After, you can use the original polygone to create a mask. Raster
math will then take care of "stamping out" the irregular region you do not want
with nul values.

Hi,

I have had this issue with other Windows software lately (Excel). Could be a
windows bug. Good to know you got it going.

Hi,

I don't have the reste of the post. What is the georefrencer doing? Do you
have other issues with Python extensions? Is there a funny caracter (like é)
in you user name path? Did you have two screens before and now, only have one?

You could repost with all the information adding the windows and qgis versions
and the installer used.

You could also have a look at the bug list to figure it out.

Re: [Qgis-user] GEO-REFERENCER not working

2017-03-14 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Did you manually remove all .qgis2 folders for all the users in the computers?
If you have have 3 users , you have 3 .qgis2 folders. Did you destroy the
registry keys?

You talk about a full uninstall, what procedure did you use? You must have
something lying around giving you problems.

Re: [Qgis-user] maps rotated and reversed.

2017-02-26 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

You have CRS problem. Your map is probably in a coordinate reference system
that uses x,y, but you are probably selecting a CRS that uses y,x. Ex:
latitude/longitude vs long/lat. that would explain everything.

Re: [Qgis-user] Is there any way to constrain the resources QGis uses?

2017-02-10 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Qgis works well with 4GB of memory on windows 7-64 for simple projects. If
possible, I would have more that one VM that would be configured with each 4GB
of ram and limit 1 user at a time per VM. If your server can handle the load,
that would be the best way to go it think.

Re: [Qgis-user] crs

2017-02-10 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

I see that Richard has responded correctly. I will just add that dxf files do
not really have a CRS. You just need to know it! Usually, the coordinates are
in meters or feet and correspond to a local CRS (ex UTM zone 18N). You may
have to do some trial and error in order to find the original CRS. When you
find that, saving it as a shape file as Richard mentioned, and then specifying
the crs, is a good way to go.

Good luck

Re: [Qgis-user] Merge Raster Problem

2017-01-10 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
You can just create a virtual raster with both scenes. The second raster will
be on top of the first. You can then save the resulting image.

The merge should work... is there a box for the raster extent? (I don't have
qgis in front of me.)

Hi,
You could try building a spatial index for the shapefile. Maybe that could
help.

Re: [Qgis-user] DWG import

2016-12-31 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi Randal,

I do not use the DWG import tool so there may be a switch or an option that I
do not know of. I generally export from AutoCAD Map3D with to option to export
the z to a column. The reality is that most AutoCAD drawing (cities plans,
architectural drawings) are still exclusively done in 2D and z is very often a
simple texte value with a point symbole. That may be your case... When you
export that, the problem is that the z value point is a label and will
systematically be beside the true measurement. You could fix that with some
vector manipulations...

Good luck

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS vs ArcGIS in Education and Practice

2016-12-15 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

This is a good question! My answer would be that students have a better chance
of having a job if the learn GIS and not a software. The software is only a
tool! If they have an ArcGIS licence at the university and can use it year
round with the university, they could learn with that.

My experience is that afterwards, they will either pirate the software or
abandons GIS because they cannot pay for the software. Also, more and more
students are on Macs and ArcGIS will not work unless you have a dual boot, a
virtual PC or a online licence.

Also, if you want to just use a software as a technician and make GIS research,
you can use ArcGIS. If you want a really good paying job and want to be able
learn how to develop software and develop GIS, then QGIS or OpenSource is the
way to go!

To think that learning GIS = learning a software is short sighted. Would you
trust a statistician if all he learned in university is how to use a particular
software or would you prefer someone who really knows what statistics are all
about???

Hi,

You also find the equivalent in dd and use that.
This should help

If it's just for printing, Lene has a better solution.

Re: [Qgis-user] Count points overlaying a raster layer

2016-11-28 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

There are many options. I sometimes use the point sampling tool (with a rater
having class data) and then export to excel or libreoffice and do a cross
tabulation. Some option are available directly in qgis. Be aware that most
plugins that deal with zonal statistics may will not work if you have multi
polygons.

Re: [Qgis-user] suddenly unable to open shape files

2016-11-25 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Perhaps you moved or copied the shape files and forgot to move the accompanied
files (3 to 8 files with different extensions like .shx .dbf .shp .prj)? If
you just move the .shp and not the others, this is will create errors. The
.shx contains the geometries. You may get this kind of message if you try to
drag and drop the .shx and not the .shp in QGiS.

.tiff will not crash because it's a lone file.

Hi,

Next time, I recommend you install Anaconda Python. It come with a number of
scientific packages. You can indicate during the installation that you do not
want to change the environment variables.

Hi,
You need to change your default Python to the one that qgis uses. You can
change that in the windows environment variables

Re: [Qgis-user] Gridding vector data

2016-11-22 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

There is the terrain modelling tools in Qgis. You can try inverse distance
weight. You also have tool the gdal_grid tools in the raster menu and in
processing. Keep in mind that you can modify the option to get interpolation
methods that are not in the GUI.

I think Grass has a local or universal Krigging also. If not. You could find
that in CrimeStat I think.

Re: [Qgis-user] MapInfo to QGIS style generator ; error message

2016-11-20 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
I wish I could help. I don't have that version of Mapinfo. You could try
installing an older version of the program to test. My hope is that Nathan
will help you out. It would be nice to have that code in the openWOR plugin.

permissions are decided using the samba user and group management. We also have
an Postgis server. http://www.postgis.net/ but most of the Data is files (shp,
tiff...) on the samba server and people have mapped network drives.

It all depends on the local setup. At the very beginning, all we had was a NAS
and about 10 computers working in a Microsoft Workgroup environment so there
has no main server. If you buy a good small NAS, you could use that for the
file reading and writing permissions. They are usually built with a Linux
distribution with a samba server running.

I hope you are using the Google Earth Image just for visualisation. They are
not good for any kind of spectral analysis.

Yes, if your project is in long /lat, the grid will be a rectangle and not a
square unless you are on the equator.

You cannot just change the CRS. You need to reproject the raster. To do that,
use gdal warp in the raster menu. Just changing the crs in the layer is only
good if you have made an error and want to correct that (for example, change
the utm zone).

Re: [Qgis-user] Problem with Using Google maps -Showing the points not exactly after exporting as a pdf or png

2016-11-16 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

This is a well know issus with this plugin. The easiest way is to zoom on the
area and to save the image (save as image). Pan and zoom and do this a few
times. Then open these images in Qgis. Keep in mind that there are
limitations on the use of Google Earth images. I wonder if this error is
intended to discourage people from printing the images...

Hi,

I have not used this in a while now but the first step, if I remember is to
export the object style from the .tab into a new field.
This is done in Mapinfo. Have you done this step?

Re: [Qgis-user] Rotate Feature changes shape

2016-11-12 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,

Is your file CRS in degrees and your triangle made to 3 points? If so, make
the file in a layer that uses a CRS that uses meter, like a UTM zone 18, then
densify the geometry. This will add points along the line of the triangle.
There is a tool for that. Make sure the project CRS is the same as your file
CRS.

Re: [Qgis-user] Plea for help with monochrome maps for publication

2016-11-11 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
There is no easy way. The colours on the screen will never be as the colours
on print even with a screen calibration (but it would help if you can calibrate
the screen with the printer). I normally deal with the publisher or the
printer directly. You can ask for a recommended colour palet. That can help.
You can also add a cd to the book with colour images.

Re: [Qgis-user] Spatial resampling of a point vector layer using QGIS

2016-11-11 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi Giacomo.

You can access gdal_grid from qgis. (Raster menu). Use the moving average
algorithm.
If it's not there, you may need to modify the gdal command line by pressing
the yellow pencil.

Re: [Qgis-user] Error when running a simple raster filter

Hi,
Not sure why you are getting this specific error. Just try running it is Saga.
It's already installed with QGIS. Saga is easy to use.

Is this the first time you have installed QGIS or did you have a previous
version installed?

Did you have a 32bit install before?

Re: [Qgis-user] Combining modern maps with old maps

2016-11-10 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
As an archaeologist, I do that a lot. You will need to scan the map to create
a .tiff. The you use the qgis georeferencing plugin to place the map in the
correct spot.

http://www.qgistutorials.com/en/docs/georeferencing_basics.html
This should help. Also look at the qgis documentation.
http://docs.qgis.org/2.14/en/docs/user_manual/

If you overlap polygons or two rasters, play with the layer rendering and
transparency found in the layer properties.

Cheers
Nicolas

Re: [Qgis-user] Feedback re future of core c++ plugins in QGIS 3.0

2016-11-07 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi Nyall,

Very interesting. I have a few comments. Where would go If I wanted to
encourage more the development of the the new raster calculator for qgis 3 (one
that is multithreaded, GPU enabled and huge raster ready)? This is a real game
stopper for using qgis with Lidar data. I have help with the bugs but can I
do more?

I see that lots of stuff below is moved to the processing plugin. I have been
continually having problems with this in a multiple user environment where I am
stuck deleting the processing plugin folder for every user in a machine every
time I do an install. That means that if 6 users have use a single machine, I
need to delete the processing folder 6 times as more often then not, I end up
with old and new versions of the processing algorithms on the same computer.
Are you planing to change this or to have some kind of version checker when a
users run Qgis after an update?

It also would be nice to do QGIS update from within QGIS and the option to
export QGIS to a USB key (without having to change a big bunch of variables).
That would make it easier for I user that do not have admin rights.

Nicolas
