[SLUG] Firefox and Chrome problems
Hi All, I have been having a problem with Firefox. It keeps stopping on me. I don't think it locks up as sometimes it continues on after a while but mostly this is between 20 minutes and an hour. I have removed and reinstalled it several times but still have the problem. I became frustrated and installed Chrome which works well for everything except embedded videos and youtube. When I ask it to play either it usually starts the audio three (3) times with about a second delay between them. It is as though it is starting up several occasions of a player with only one visible. Has anyone else had this problem and, perhaps, solved it? Any ideas would be appreciated. Also the right mouse button still doesn't work. This does not happen in Thunderbird, or other applications, just Firefox. Have you tried using the reset firefox button from the Help/Troubleshooting menu? ... No, unfortunately the Help menu is one of those not working in Firefox. BTW Did you know that enlightenment will work well on Mint. You can install the whole desktop from the package manager. It should probably solve the firefox problems. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJRZhuYAAoJEJk11efqjIS4ZdUIAJjiQxZ26KuRwvYC06Wf+BbL AqV0t+c8cwf0BwBPsEnclUqcEMxXcEzkKDYkwNaEaHTt9zuw9yj3Sm+OpcXmuNns scRWxHNSimD9qK+Lep6TNxSaOf5OERILXFXWQtsPEMH6Ee7u5pisl/QLPyYQkh6R jUPrLnITYmxjBmeq659j7H8Ck9ln1Lf/Z5XpEkI3TLlisF9yJZwMsWpFDkyDlCSv rRZFC83HH70sm7IW3eVYOqWT8UfzjHJNicWdNjsZye3nk9BFhrN8xrPCK2Rzpo59 vZN/+ehYAWflso1uQI/2UrlXQdpZ36+7VsVsH+ae6wahUgp5jCLYCj26F5lsRIo= =GdFQ -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

After writing to the partition table and rebooting, I did a mkfs /dev/hda2 15504; mkswap /dev/hda3 4096; swapon /dev/hda3. Finally I got the prompt for formatted disk to make a boot disk. Thinking, I ahd finished, I attempted to boot this disk to no avail. Of course during doinstall I got messages such as mv: command not found, rm: command not found and so forth. I am guessing that my /dev/hada2 is not mounting and hence the file system is not being transferred. I have been trying to dissassemble doinstall as most erros seem to be redirected to /dev/null. When you upgrade from one version of Ubuntu/Debian/... you are asked, during the set-up phase of each relevant package, if you want to replace your old configuration file with the one provided by the maintainer of the package. If you say yes then you lose your old configuration file for the package in question and a new one is provided. Often this is no problem, but if you have personalised the package - such as setting up your network - then you need to either retain your old configuration file OR go through the process (of setting up your network) again, from scratch. Have a strange problem with this install. On my laptop (Core i3 X86_64) the update to 12.04 went OK (had to run the -f to fix and finish the install but OK) All works as expected. On my desktop (AMD II x4 with amd64) all seemed to run perfectly and every thing works EXCEPT although I can easily connect and talk to my router over wifi I cannot surf the net. I think it may be a DNS problem but on checking the configuration I find that nothing has changed. What is even more curious is that if I boot the previous version of Linux with the kernel (3.0.0.17) all is back. Note: When I upgraded I kept my config file for the network. I can get most things working but I can't seem to get it to connect to my ADSL 2+ router/modem. I am using wireless networking and all works perfectly with gnome but when I switch to e17 I get no connection. I tried using wicd and set up the WPA2 Key but it says bad password. When I return to the gnome desktop wicd connects easily so I know the encryption key is correct. I seem to have missed something. Any clues would help. I can get NetworkManager to run under e17 but can't get it to connect as it does not have a presence on the e desktop. (Aside: I can run e17 under unity but it is based on Mandriva and when I install it I can't get the grub boot manager to run it as an alternative with my other versions (Ubuntu 11.04 and Debian 6). Also note that Debian 6 does not work with my network card.) Subsequent updates haven't corrected this fault and it's occurred the same on 2 separate installations - one on a pentium 4 HP, the other on a 64 bit P5 Acer. Anyone with any solutions to this? Joseph What happens if you press ctrlaltF1 to go to a text screen (tty1)? If it gives you a login screen, then login as root and use sax. Not sure if this is the culprit, but when I used SuSE I found that it sometimes broke the video driver for my nVidia card during upgrades. Easy to fix with sax as it will run in text mode. (sudo sh /etc/init.d/cups restart). If that works, then it is likely a problem with the order in which daemons are being started at boot (which could in principle affect some HP printers). If that is your problem it might be fixed by adding sh /etc/init.d/cups restart to /etc/rc.local. The only other remotely rational culprit I can think of would be your printer settings being symlinked into a directory in /tmp and /var/tmp, which would be a fairly effective way of losing settings on reboot (especially if they are ram disks). By removing the licensed copy of windows from the laptop of a student who leaves school they have that licence to issue to another student. This is why, in the magazine I edit for my other computer club, I only publish content that is submitted by the author of the material or that which comes with a specific permission from the original author. The person who gave me a couple of years rest used windows and word so I will have to recreate the templates from scratch probably. The magazine is 24 pages for which the format is fairly fixed. Page 1 is a cover with graphics and some text, Page 2 has an index (which obviously changes monthly) and other fixed text and page 24 is basically fixed with only a small part (Dates) of its text changing monthly. Pages 3 to 23 (where all the new content is placed) are set up as 2 columns with a footer but no header. I used to use Open Office and made it in four parts which I combined and created a pdf for the printer when I did it in the past but I was wondering if there might be a simpler way to set up a template for the whole magazine as one unit and just make the minor changes and drop in the new body text each month. Any recommendation would be appreciated. [SLUG] Shuttle computer and Slackware
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi All, I have a two part problem at the moment related to mate who has a shuttle computer which seems to have a liquid based cooler for the processor. Unfortunately the fan for this cooling system has failed and so the system won't start. The fan has a four pin connector that goes to the motherboard and must get some feedback from this during POST. We have tried the distributor only to be told that they change their system about every three months and do not keep parts for systems as old as his (18 months old). 1) Does anyone know where I can get a fan with this 4 pin connector - it looks similar to a DVD sound connector. 2) I have tried to get the system running on a different computer by connecting the HDD (it is Slackware Linux based) but it errors out with no screens found. The techie at the company that installed the software suggested that we change the PCI entries in xorg.conf from 2:0:0 to 1:0:0 but this changes nothing. I have not used Slackware since version 3.5 and have no idea what the xorg.conf should look like. Any suggestions would be of assistance. NOTE: The system runs the video screens in my friend's store and runs without a keyboard or mouse. He can log into it and edit what goes on the screens with another workstation and going to its web page (it runs as an internal web server with most of the code written in php) and making the changes there. (Also, this should be moved to slug chat) Ben Hi Ben, Filtering such sites is not the problem. Responsible ISPs and even Google already do this. It is the government using the motherhood argument to sneak in a very powerful propaganda tool that is the problem. Who then determines what is appropriate (and fits in with their values)? It is putting into the hands of a public servant the power to determine what is filtered for the rest of eternity and that is a problem. The argument goes - to block undesirable sites we need to be able to determine from time to time what is inappropriate material. {This can include anything, even material that puts the government of the day in a bad light} Once the legislation is implemented then what is filtered is up to the government of the day - or more likely a public servant until they outsource the filtering to (say) Microsoft. I know that this is an extreme example but: For example, if they wish to convince the public of how wonderful their new tax has been in the reduction of methane and carbon dioxide pollution they only have to have all material that shows otherwise listed as inappropriate for public access and block it. We would be none the wiser as we would not know it existed. Re: [SLUG] Pulse Audio
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Sorry Daniel if I offended your favourite program. It is just that I have had to re-setup my sound several times now with each ubuntu upgrade and it has almost always been a problem that could be lain at the feet of PulseAudio. I have been able to solve the problem this time with Robert's advice and editing of some files but in the past it has had to be removed to repair the system and it took ubuntu desktop with it - not a characteristic of a well behaved program. It has given me grief in the past so I have always considered it malware but I take your point and will not do so in future. Heracles Daniel Pittman wrote: Heracles herac...@iprimus.com.au writes: After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer have sound. lspci recognises my Creative Labs Live card but I get nothing out of it. Last time this happened I fixed it by the complete removal of Pulse Audio. What was PulseAudio doing that caused you to have problems with sound output? Have you checked if that is happening again? If not, what exactly isn't working: is it just that GNOME applications through libcanberra are not outputting audio, or other things? Does audio work if you tell an alsa application to talk direct to the hardware? Have you checked the volume levels and mutes on the sound card? Is it actually supported? IIRC, at least some of the Creative cards required firmware to offer various basic facilities — like sound — and didn't offer other basic facilities — like mute — with anything that could be redistributed. Is there a simple fix or do I just have to remove this malware. While PulseAudio may not work for you, throwing around the malware label is the same as the people who unsubscribe from mailing lists by hitting the report as SPAM button in their mail client: It is unhelpful, technically incorrect, and it makes you look kind of silly. A better approach is to say something like ...remove this awful, broken pile of steaming refuse that I would be ashamed to allow to touch my systems. :) Daniel -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkruaIYACgkQybPcBAs9CE9Z+ACffMESMl9O1BeoYW/oI2Piq9q3 s6kAoJqRvLbV+pKvmB6SbLV8zXzf7Ein =IOor -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
