Thunderbird

2016-12-14 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. My Office 365 home subscription is going to expire in
approximately three days. I now have Office 365 personal edition on my new
desktop computer running Windows 10. I decided to try Thunderbird on my
laptop computer running Windows 7 home edition 64 bit. Now I need to know
how to reverse the sort order so that the newest messages are at the top of
the list rather than the bottom. Thunderbird downloaded 674 messages so I
will need to learn how to create a saved folder to keep e-mail I want for
future reference, but I also need to start weeding out unwanted e-mail. I
wrote to a list member a while back but I didn't receive a response. Oh, I
also need to learn how to import the saved e-mail from Outlook 2016 from the
laptop computer to put them into the Thunderbird saved folder. Let's try to
keep things simple as possible. I must admit that when I set up Tb that
Ididn't realize that I would download 674 messages, smile. Thanks for any
help you can provide.

Hello, Jeremy. I wish you nothing but God's blessings and best wishes that
your new job brings you a great future. I absolutely agree with those who

RE: Need some advice

2016-08-04 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Rick. I tried sending the text of a message I sent to another list to
which I am subscribed using the f-8 text selection method but for some
reason it didn't copy and paste the text into the message. So, contact the
Microsoft Accessibility Answer Desk at 1-800-9365900. Explain to the agent
what happened, and see if the agent will help you download the media
creation tool. That is how I got the update rather than wait for the update
to be rolled out to my pc. I'm not saying this suggestion will work for
you.

Mike M

P.S. Remember that because the download and installation will take a while
to download and install the agent will disconnect the call. My download and
installation took about five hours perhaps because of my connection speed,
and perhaps as an Ai Squared staff member put it, and I am paraphrasing,
"everybody and his brother are trying to download the update." .

Got the sound fixed

2016-08-03 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Well, after trying and trying I finally figured out how to adjust the
sound to a listenable level. I typed the word sound in the search box and
pressed enter. I down arrowed to the default playback device and tabbed to
the properties button and pressed enter. I pressed the right arrow and
found the third tab which is enhancements, tabbed to the disable all sound
effects, and checked the box and bingo! The sound issue was resolved. All
is well again.

Windows 10 anniversary update is finally installed

Hi. Now that the Windows 10 anniversary update is installed, the sound is
extremely distorted once again. And wouldn't you know, I thought I would
remember how to reset the sound to a listenable level. However, I'm not
doing something right. I type the word sound in the search box after
pressing the windows key, but I can't seem to find the enhancements tab. I
select the default playback device which are my speakers, but I can't find
the tab so I can check the box to reduce the sound level. I had to turn
down the volume on the sound bar so I could at least not blast my eardrums,
smile. Thanks.

Hi, Larry. I tried the extended dictionary app in its early version and
didn't like it so I uninstalled it. I am not trying to discourage you from
trying it out. No, there is no license fee. I can't see what sense it
would make for an app creator to allow users of Window-eyes to be able to
download free apps and then to charge a license fee. I understand that you

For those who use this app,

I see that a license is required for use of this app. Am I to understand
from this that there might be a fee associated with acquiring said license,
and if so, how much.

This sure looks like a most useful app, and might be worth paying for,
though I wouldn't want to give anybody any ideas .

Anyway, looks rather exciting.

Deleted items not reading properly in Outlook 2016

2016-07-16 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. At approximately 7:30 p.m. last evening when checking e-mail in Outlook
2016, I ran into the following issue. When I press the shortcut key to open
Outlook 2016, it opens in the inbox as expected. Any messages that land in
the inbox read as expected. But when I open the deleted items folder with
ctrl-y and pressing d until I hear deleted items, the deleted items folder
opens. When I press the home key to make sure I'm at the top of the deleted
items list, I hear selected, one of 47. Pressing down arrow announces
selected, two of 47, three of 47, and so on. When I press the ctrl-end key,
then Window-eyes reads messages correctly by saying, let's say, John Smith,
whether or not it was read, the time and date of receipt, and so on. I was
on the phone with a Microsoft Accessibility Answer Desk representative who
suggested we try uninstalling and reinstalling Window-eyes 9.4.0. The issue
is still unresolved. I also received a Gw Toolkit error after I turned on
the computer and before I sent this message.

I am running Window-eyes 9.4.0 under Windows 10. I am using Eloquence Reed.
I hope I provided enough information. Thank you.

Mike M

P.S. This issue is not occurring using Window-eyes on my laptop running
Outlook 2016 under Windows 7. Ok, I'm heading back to bed. I started to
send this message last night but was interrupted. I thought shutting the pc
down overnight would resolve the issue, but no go. .

RE: virus protector

2016-05-05 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
I'm not Brian. But, the answer to your question regarding Windows Defender
is yes, it works well with Window-eyes. Windows Defender took the place of
Microsoft Security Essentials beginning with the release of Windows 8. I am
now using it with Windows 10. Just because a computer comes with a specific
antivirus software, you don't have to use it. Windows Defender is free,
runs in the background, and is unobtrusive.

RE: Three beeps swhen shutting down computer, what do they mean, and what can I do to get rid of them

2016-04-20 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Larry. I am unable to answer your question concerning why Windows 10 users
now hear three descending tones when shutting down their computers. Chris
Grabowski has explained this issue over the phone to me, however, that
doesn't mean I remember his explanation. Chris, a memory refresh would be
great! The answer to your question of what can be done to fix the issue is
nothing, well, not yet, anyway. I am used to the ascending beeps and boops
by now, whether I like them or not.

Subject: Three beeps swhen shutting down computer, what do they mean, and
what can I do to get rid of them

Dear listers,

Still a few fun and games I suppose after the W10 upgrade. I am
getting three descending beeps (beep, bop, boot), when I go to shut down my
computer. As I was given to understand when these beeps were ascending, it
might have had something to do with the video card. At that time, I was also
having issues with WE accessing and making use of my apps, and went through
the drastic step of a system restore. Now since I only upgraded last
Saturday afternoon, I don't think that it would benefit me much to do that,
because If I did, I might end up with a pre Windows 10 environment, or would
I?

I suppose that if this is really nothing to be concerned about, especially
if it happens on exit, then I wont, but it is a bit disconcerting to hear
these kind of things just popping up for no known or logical reason.

Any help in solving this little puzzle will be greatly appreciated,

Larry

RE: Questions re installations

2016-04-17 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi Don. You don't have to have a bersion 9.4 cd. Even though when you
access the downloads page, and you hear the message that you are running the
most current version of Window-eyes, you can tab to the download button and
download Window-eyes 9.4. After it downloads it will install over itself.
You have the right idea, but you don't have to be concerned. The option to
download and install the most current version of Window-eyes is always on
the downloads page regardless of which version of Window-eyes is installed.
You won't hurt anything by installing Window-eyes over itself after it
downloads.

Morning all:

I am about to install we 9.4 on my windows 7 computer and see how she runs.

After installation and waiting a time, I want to install windows 10.

However, I am told that once windows 10 is installed, I need to reinstall
9.4 again.

I don't have a 9.4 cd, so, how do I install 9.4 again?

If I try to load from the we page, will I not get the message you are
already running 9.4?

Thanks

RE: WE 9.4

2016-03-08 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Dave. Well, it looks like the joke is on us Window-eyes users, smile.
I read Net Bat's e-mail which stated you don't get an e-mail about the
update to version 9.4, and lo and behold, right after his e-mail, I came
across the e-mail Aaron posted alerting us that the update is available.

You mentioned that after you reboot your computer from a complete shut down
that you are notified of the update. However, I am an early riser, and so I
turn on my computers before Ai Squared opens. Were it not for one of the
list members mentioning that the 9.4 update was available, I wouldn't have
known. I eventually would have checked for the update from the help menu,
but thanks to Aaron's e-mail, I don't have to. And of course, I'm using
version 9.4.

RE: app update today

Hi. The setup wizard app used to be called the quick start wizard. Since
Zoom Text Fusion's release a couple of months ago, the name of the app was
changed to the Setup Wizard app. The setup wizard is the app that runs when
you install or reinstall Window-eyes. When the app launches, it allows the
user to set the speech rate, your Braille display settings, the choice of
synthesizer, etc. etc. Every time an app is updated, I check the
information about the update modifications on the app central site. Hope
that helps.

Jed. Ok. Use the arrow keys to find the beginning of the text you want to
select. Press the right arrow key until you come to the end of the text you
want to select. Now press the f8 key. You will be presented with three
choices. The first choice is copy plain text, and the other choices are
copy text with formatting, and the third choice is to reset selected text or
something like that. Once you pick the plain text button, and if that is
the selection you want, press the enter key. Then you'll have to find the
document in which you want to paste the selected text. Press the ctrl-v key
combo. I hope I didn't leave anything out, smile. If I did, feel free to

Radio buttons not announcing checked status using Google Chrome

2015-12-31 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Today I went online to my bank's website using Google Chrome. I
entered my bank's website address focusing the address bar by pressing
alt-d. After I logged in, I used the transfer feature to send money to my

immediately, the state of the radio buttons would not properly announce the
status. I know that the radio buttons were checked because I was able to
complete the transactions. The radio buttons still announced that they were
unchecked. I hope that this issue will be resolved in the next release of

Hi Robert,
It's a software program that allows those of us who use screen readers to
easily burn and rip audio cds. The program can also do other things. Here's
a link to an audio tutorial that a friend of mine and I did on the Tek-talk
program from accessible world:

If you have any questions, feel free to email or skype either of us, our
contact information is mentioned in the audio tutorial.

App Get

2015-12-24 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Just a few minutes ago, I turned on both my laptop and desktop
computers, both running Windows 10. After the laptop booted up and
Window-eyes 9.3.1 launched, I was notified of an update available. So I
installed it. Yet when I check the installed updates in the add or remove
dialog, there is no update showing as being installed today. When I checked
the package manager to determine which updates are running, I hear that the
app get update is version 1.2.5, but the apps shown as running display a
version number 1.2.4. Could somebody please tell me why the app get version
numbers don't match? And can somebody tell me which update was installed on
my laptop after I am certain I heard the tone notifying me of an update and
an update downloaded and installed?

RE: an upgrade question

2015-12-19 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Jesse. If you wish, you could upgrade right now. The servers run the
list, download the upgrades, and so on. It is best to try upgrading
Window-eyes during low traffic periods. You can upgrade during business
hours as well. My point is this. Try to upgrade Window-eyes to the current
version when internet traffic is likely to be low--you know, early morning,
late evening, weekends, yada yada yada. The servers were jammed when
Window-eyes 9.3 was released on Wednesday. I didn't get the upgrade until
sometime after 5:00 p.m. mountain time. .

Introducing Window-eyes 9.3

2015-12-16 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. I must say that trying to download the Window-eyes 9.3 has been an
exercise in patience. Of course, the day's not over yet. After each
attempt to download the upgrade has failed due to the servers being jammed,
I have shouted choice words which I will not put into this e-mail. Use your
imagination folks I have yet to miss installing a Window-eyes upgrade on
the day of release. Have patience folks. .

Window-eyes 9.3

2015-12-16 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Well, I finally got the Window-eyes 9.3 downloaded and installed on my Dell
Xps desktop and my Dell Xps laptop running Windows 10. On the desktop
computer after I pressed the enter key to restart the computer, the computer
appeared to restart, but Window-eyes did not seem to launch. I had to do a
hard shut down, the Window-eyes shut down sound played, then the computer
restarted when I pressed the power button. After Window-eyes launched, the
default apps installed, and then the setup wizard launched. On my laptop
computer, the installation went well, the computer restarted and Window-eyes
9.3 launched without the setup wizard.

RE: hourly chime with windows 10, no longer speaking

2015-12-08 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
You can find the hourly chime app from the app central website which is
where all Window-eyes apps are archived. However, a quicker way to download
and install the app can be obtained from the app get app by pressing the
windows key g combination to launch the app. After the app launches press
the find command key and type hourly chime. Take it from there.

RE: annoying repetitive message

Hi. There is an updated Gw Toolkit app which is version 8.6.5 which was

Hi,
Every time I turn on my computer now, I get the following message. I know
it has something to do with the toolkit app, and I have even sent an error
report to AI Squared, but haven't received an answer. I guess that's
because us XP users (and I'm sure I'm not the only one out there), are now
the dead orphan stepchildren these days. I get that technology moves on.
Short of uninstalling the latest update to the toolkit app (which I'm not
sure is a good idea), is there any way to get this message to stop?

The message is as follows:

Subject: Introducing Virtual View 5.0

Virtual View 5.0 now supports exciting new features such as the ability to
OCR images from files or the screen, plus virtualizing various document
formats, including PDF files. Here are some other features:

* You can open an image in any format (jpg, bmp, png, tiff,
etc.).
* If you press Alt-Print Screen to capture the active window,
Virtual View will automatically OCR it for you.
* The Virtual View options dialog lets you control image
manipulation to increase OCR success.
* Supports UAC, allowing you to get contents (specifically UIA)
from windows that are elevated.

* Images inside PDF files are prepended with [BEGIN
IMAGE] and appended with [END IMAGE].
* You can choose several different kinds of file formats to
virtualize, including:

* Txt

* Html

* Xml

* Zip

* And if you have Office installed:

? Docx

? Xlsx

? Pptx

Imagine a Word document filled with text boxes and word art. That
information will show up as plain text when passed through Virtual View.
Spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations are the same way. If you want to
quickly skim a PowerPoint presentation without opening PowerPoint, use
Virtual View.

With zip files, Virtual View can open the zip file and get the text of all
text files. At the very least, you can get a list of the files in the
archive.

Red hot news from Ai Squared and a speech questionRE: Red Hot News from Ai Squared!

2015-10-25 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Pam. Here's the answer to your first question and also a
comment. Like you, I did not receive the message from the list itself,
however, it was forwarded by one of the list members, smile. The message
contained html code which Window-eyes tries to read but it comes out as
gibberish. I decided that I would try to listen to the entire message for the
heck of it. At the bottom of the message there was text mentioning Zoom Text,
however, I have tried not to mention this because I didn't want to get another
unnecessary thread going, smile.

As per your second question. Yes, Window-eyes has the ability to have
different voices for the screen, keyboard, and mouse, depending on which
synthesizer you use. I have a mouse voice set to be spoken in what I call a
and I quote "mousey" voice whenever I press the numbpad keys. I use Eloquence
which allows this feature to work.

I hope I answered your questions.

Actually, It was binary not text. I ran it through a binary editor, and
had it try to extract any text it could find out of it and it found some
text which said, we really don't care about all the problems with our
screen reader at this point were way over are heads and there may never
  even be another Window-eyes version.

Red hot news from Ai Squared

2015-10-19 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Jeremy. While I don't work for Ai Squared, I couldn't resist answering
Vaughan's question in a joking manner. Vaughan, Jeremy indicated that this
e-mail is for a teaser campaign for a product coming soon. The campaign is
a teaser indeed! We users are being teased with unreadable html code so
we'll wonder what product Ai Squared is going to release. Sorry, but I
couldn't resist. Thanks Jeremy for trying to explain what image the
alternative text is supposed to describe. A woman wearing a wig? Who knew.
I have a feeling many an e-mail client stripped out the alternative text.
The html code doesn't sound like the description of a woman wearing a wig.
The word padding was included in the code, so perhaps the wig has padding?
Hmmm. I wonder. Ok, ok, I'm done, I promise.

RE: How to turn off speaking punctuation

2015-09-26 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hello, Rick. Here's how to turn off spoken punctuation. Open the
Window-eyes control panel with ctrl-backslash. Find the screen node and
expand it with the right arrow key. Arrow down to punctuation and tab once
it is highlighted. You'll come across various items such as math global and
various choices of items like off, dictionary only or just the word on. I
have all items set to off. That way, I only hear every character as I type.
So, I don't hear every dash, plus, dollar sign or any other punctuation for
that matter unless I press one of the punctuation keys, smile.I hope
this helps. Incidentally, just to make sure I'd explain things as best as I
could, I followed the steps myself because once I set things the way I like
them in Window-eyes, I tend to forget them. .

On one of my computers, I had turned on the feature to have WE speak

Sudden loss of speech

In order to avoid a deluge of e-mail asking what speech synthesizer I am

Sudden loss of speech

2015-09-26 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. I am sending this message to the list in case anyone else has run into
this problem. I am not complaining; I am merely explaining what happened
while I was going through my e-mail.

I have two Dell computers and they're both running Windows 10 and
Window-eyes 9.2.

Earlier this morning, I was checking my e-mail on my Dell Xps-501 laptop.
After I opened the third e-mail in Outlook 2013 and started reading it using
ctrl-shift-r, speech suddenly stopped. I pressed the ctrl-alt-w hotkey
three times to launch Window-eyes 9.2. The startup sound would play, but
speech would not come up. I rebooted the machine hoping for an error report
and there wasn't one.

Having said all of this, this brings me to ask these questions. How can
speech suddenly stop and not generate an error report? If no error report
is generated for Ai Squared engineers to look at, how can the problem of
sudden loss of speech be tracked down? If Ai Squared can find a way to fix
this problem, I'm all ears, smile.

This doesn't happen often, so I must admit I never thought I'd be one of
those list members mentioning this issue. I guess this is one of those
moments where there's a first time for everything, smile. My primary
computer is a Dell Xps-8500 desktop running Outlook 2013 as well.

RE: window eyes 7 for me?

2015-09-04 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Amit. While I don't work for Ai Squared, but have been a Window-eyes
user for fifteen years, I am sure that it is safe to say that I'm afraid you
won't be able to obtain a copy of Window-eyes 7.0. Once a new version of
Window-eyes is released, Ai Squared has a download for the most current
version. Since Ai Squared assigns a serial number to each licensed user,
nobody will be able to provide a download of Window-eyes 7.0, or any
version, for that matter. To put this another way, once Ai Squared releases
a version of Window-eyes, there's no going back unless you happen to keep
Window-eyes cd's around. If you were using Windows 10, Window-eyes 9.2 will
run, but any version of Window-eyes prior to 9.2 will not run under Windows
10. I keep Window-eyes cd's around for a particular series of versions, but
in the case of the Window-eyes 9.x series, the Window-eyes 9.1 and 9.0 cd's
will be of no use to me because I'm using Windows 10.

Loss of focus while on the Bard website

2015-08-22 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. A few minutes ago I was reading the information about the books added
to the bard site today. As I was reading the information, suddenly the
words get started button were spoken. This caused the reading to suddenly
stop. I had to alt-tab back to the page in order to continue reading where
I left off because the up or down arrow keys wouldn't do anything when I
pressed them. This used to happen to me when e-mail would arrive in the
inbox using Outlook 2013 under Windows 8.1. I am using Window-eyes 9.2, the
latest Eloquence, and my preferred browser Internet Explorer or exploder as
some like to call it, hardy har har. What get started button did
Window-eyes speak out of nowhere?

Upgrading to Window-eyes 9.2

2015-08-15 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Bob. Sorry, but I forgot the subject of your post regarding upgrading
to Window-eyes 9.2 from Window-eyes 9.0. The readme clearly states that you
cannot install Window-eyes 9.2 over a version less than 8.x without
contacting Ai Squared. Because you mentioned that you have Window-eyes 9.0,
you can download Window-eyes 9.2 from the website. Go to the help menu by
opening the Window-eyes control panel with control backslash. Press alt-h.
Use either the up or down arrow keys to navigate to check for updates.
Press enter. A page will come up with various options. Tab to the button
that says visit the website. After that page loads find the download
upgrade button and press enter on it. Follow the instructions and you'll be
good to go. After Window-eyes 9.2 is installed then Windows 10 will
install. I don't want to upset any of the list members but, it pays to read
the documentation, particularly in cases of upgrading Window-eyes. I
checked the readme again so I would provide correct information. You won't
have to buy a cd unless you choose to do so. I buy a cd each time an
upgrade is released for my own peace of mind, smile. A cd costs $20.

Mike M

P.S. If you purchased a fotware maintenance agreement (s m a), the upgrade
won't count against your s m a. Since you're upgrading from version 9.0,
you might have to pay $49, but don't quote me on that one, please? I
upgraded from version 9.1, and the upgrade was free because I purchased a s
m a. If I hadn't, I would have had to buy the 9.1 upgrade for $49 If I
provided any incorrect information or if someone can add anything to what I
have posted, please feel free, grin. .

Lost Windows 10 sounds

2015-08-13 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. This morning while perusing the interface to figure out how to check
for updates manually, I unintentionally created a problem of having lost all
sounds.

Here's what happened. I discovered a cumulative update for Windows 10, and
decided to manually restart the computer to install it rather than wait
until 2:30 a.m. tomorrow morning for the computer to shut down and restart
itself. I pressed the restart button to restart the machine and install the
update. Now, after the computer restarted, no sounds are generated.
Narrator won't even launch.

I called the Microsoft disability answer desk and my sighted nephew could
see the desktop icons and even do a remote session with the representative.
My nephew was on the phone for about an hour and no progress was made. The
issue has supposedly been escalated to a higher level technician for a call
back or an e-mail to resolve the issue.

This issue happened using Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 10 on a Dell
Xps-8500 desktop pc. My Dell Xps-501-L laptop is working fine after
installing the update or else I wouldn't be able to send this e-mail, smile.
I hope someone on this list can help. I wonder if the installation of the
update when the machine was restarted caused the sounds to be muted. ?

RE: What is the status of Edge?

2015-08-07 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Chris. Edge is not yet accessible using Window-eyes or any of the other

Windows 10 is installed, press the Windows key. You very likely will hear
the word Cortana, but don't despair, smile. You're in a search box and can
type a search term. In this case, type default browser. Marc Solomon
provided a knowledge base article that explains how to change the setting to
the browser of your choice if you have more than one browser installed.
Also, please refer to the Window-eyes 9.2 readme document which also
explains how to set your browser of choice as the default browser. I'm
using Internet Explorer 11 as my default browser. To be fair, however, I do
have Firefox and Google Chrome installed. If I have left anything out,
please add further comments. Steve? Marc? Aaron? Oh, and anyone else
reading this message, smile.

Subject: What is the status of Edge?

Guys,

I've not gotten my update yet to Windows 10 that I know of, however, I do
want to ask. I have been told that IE is no mo. I hear they've replaced it
with a new browser called Edge. I hear it's kind of, ish! like I E, but not
exactly. I've been told that for a while, the accessibility was pretty
broken. I'm just curious to know if Edge can be used reliably at this point
with W E 9.2? I don't have a problem with Firefox per sé, but I'd prefer
using Edge, if it can be done. If not though, then it's ok. Just let me
know either way.

Chris.

RE: WINDOWS 10

2015-08-06 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Since it sounds like your upgrade to Windows 10 has started, and since
you mentioned that you are still hearing Window-eyes 9.2 speaking, all you
can do is wait. The process can take up to perhaps five hours. Window-eyes
will eventually stop speaking and eventually you'll hear Window-eyes
announce a message asking you if you wish to keep your settings as you have
them or if you only want to keep certain files. Choose to leave things as
they are. Once you do that you'll hear a message that your computer will
restart several times and that this could take a while. Then Window-eyes
won't talk anymore. Since Window-eyes will no longer be speaking,
periodically press the Windows key and the enter key together to launch
Narrator. Once you can launch narrator, follow the instructions you hear,
and eventually your computer will launch Windows 10 and Window-eyes will
speak again.

Windows 10 upgrade

2015-08-04 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Ok, I will try my best to answer the questions as to how you know when
your Windows 10 upgrade is ready to install. For further information,
please see my earlier posts concerning the difficulties I had upgrading to
Windows 10. Like you, Brice, I reserved my upgrades to Windows 10 on two
computers. For whatever reason, my Windows update history under Windows 8.1
showed at least a dozen failed upgrades. My laptop running Windows 7 64 bit
home edition showed at least two failed upgrades. I called the Microsoft
Accessibility Answer Desk on three occasions and the reps remotely accessed
the computers and downloaded the upgrades manually. If things will work as
they're supposed to work, you should be notified by Window-eyes when you're
download is taking place. Once the download is finished, you should hear a
notification that it is ready to install. Depending upon the speed of your
internet connection and because the download file is about four gigs, it
could take several hours to download and install. Each download and
installation took about five hours. Remember, once the installation begins,
Window-eyes will not talk. During the installation as Doug Geoffray
indicated in an e-mail to a list member, you will need to use narrator to
finish the installation and setup before Window-eyes 9.2 comes up talking.
Your computer will restart several times, and before Window-eyes stops
talking, a message will be spoken that says something like this. Your
computer will restart several times and this could take a while. Oh, and
once you upgrade to Windows 10, the failed updates will of course be
removed. As we're all in the habit of saying, hope that helps.

Mike M

P.S. During the installation while Window-eyes is not talking, periodically
press the Windows key and the enter key to launch Narrator. If Narrator
speaks, follow the prompts. At the risk of sounding like I'm bragging, this
is my first installation of a Windows upgrade I have done without sighted
help thanks to Doug's instructions, Window-eyes 9.2 being able to remain
installed, and let us not forget Narrator..

RE: I don't have to sign into Windows 10 to use Cortana, thanks Chris.

2015-08-03 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Vince. Cortana is a feature in Windows 10 similar to the voice assistant
called Seri used on Apple devices such as I-phones. You will need a headset
microphone, or if you have a laptop with a built-in hands free microphone,
you would be able to use Cortana. As an example, you could ask Cortana what
the weather conditions are in your area. Or, as some list members have
stated, Cortana can tell jokes. Having said all of this, I am still waiting
for my upgrade notification from Microsoft, so I don't yet have Cortana,
smile. If I misspelled the Apple I-phone voice assistant's name, I
certainly didn't mean to.

Redefining a hotkey

2015-08-02 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Earlier this morning I heard the progress bar indicator giving
percentages of a program downloading in the background. I was trying to
figure out which program was installed by accessing the programs and
features list in the Windows 8.1 control panel. Well, I was trying to
uninstall unnecessary programs, particularly the Window-eyes 9.1 program.
Bad move! I have had to reinstall Window-eyes 9.1, then 9.2, but in the
process of doing so, the ctrl-shift-question key combination has become
undefined. Steven Clower told me that the key can sometimes become
undefined. I can't seem to find the ctrl-shift-question key combination in
the hotkeys list. I don't know why I can't find the hotkey. Short of
uninstalling and reinstalling the Office 2013 sets and the Outlook Enhanced
app which Chris did during a remote assistant session, can't I simply just
try redefining the hotkey? That is, if I could just find it. I'm going to
go back to the hotkeys list yet again. ? Thanks.

2015-08-02 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hey, Lou. I give up. Off and on, throughout the day, I have tried to get
the control-shift-question Key combination redefined and have had no luck.
I've uninstalled the 2013 sets, reinstalled them, and even uninstalled and
reinstalled the Office 2013 sets and the Outlook Enhanced app. I usually
don't try to define, assign or undefine and redefine hotkeys, so I am lost
on this one. I was trying to send you a private e-mail, but when I tried to
read your e-mail address after replying to this post, I couldn't read your
e-mail address character by character. Window-eyes would read your address
in rapid fire succession as per usual. I am going to have to be instructed
step by step on how to deal with the hotkey combination not working as
expected. Oh, on my laptop computer running Windows 7 64 bit, the hotkey
combo won't work either. This makes me wonder if shutting down and
restarting the computers causes the hotkey to become undefined. Thanks.

You should be able to redefine it, yes. Control-Shift-question mark is the

Outlook 2013 under Windows 7

2015-07-30 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. I've been on the phone with a Microsoft accessibility answer desk
representative for the second time this afternoon. Here's why.

When I first contacted the Microsoft Accessibility answer desk, I wanted the
title bar in Outlook 2013with the inbox open to read exactly the same on
both my desktop computer running Windows 8.1 and my laptop computer running
Windows 7 64 bit. In order to do that, the representative had to create a
new Outlook 2013 account on the Windows 7 laptop computer. She was able to
do that, but then everything in Outlook 2013 on my laptop was reading e-mail
grouped by dates and however it reads by default. The second
representative tried to compare the settings on my desktop computer running
Outlook 2013 and managed to get the messages to read more like a list view.
However, now none of the messages in the inbox or my saved e-mail folders on
my laptop computer will indicate whether they are read or unread like they
do on the desktop computer. For whatever reason, when I press the
ctrl-shift-question keystroke to read the set up information with Outlook
2013 open, the dialog will not read on either computer. All I hear is the
word question. This has happened before. I wish I had left well enough
alone because the 2010 pst file transferred the settings from version 2010
to 2013 on my laptop computer just fine. That's what I get for being so
picky. I am running Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 8.1 and under Windows 7
64 bit. I'm grasping at straws here. The representative wants to escalate
the case and she has provided me with a case number. I probably will have
to find Marc Solomon's webinar to help me get Outlook 2013 working the way
I'd like it to. I wanted to call Ai Squared for support but it is too
late in the day. What a mess! .

Outlook 2013 under Windows 7

2015-07-30 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. It seems that no matter what I have tried, my messages still will not
display as read or unread no matter which folder I select. I have
downloaded Marc Solomon's webinar recording of part one of working with
Outlook 2013 and Window-eyes. When I try following the steps to turn off
the preview payne, here's what happens. Marc says to press alt-v to
activate the view menu. Then he says to press the letter p twice in
succession to activate the people payne. After the second press of the
letter p, the computer dings at me and I am unable to find any of the items
so I can turn the people payne off. I hear line one, line two, line three.
When I press the uparrow key in the message list in the Outlook 2013 inbox,
I hear unread selected messages tree view. When I press the delete key I
hear delete selected messages button. With all of the discussion of whether
technical support is needed or not, I sure could use it now, smile

RE: downloading windows 10

2015-07-30 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Chris. I am in the same situation as I am sure many of us who have reserved
a copy of Windows 10. Yes, indeed, Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 in
waves so as not to overload their servers. In other words, this is one of
those situations where we'll have to wait to be notified. Microsoft says
customers
will be notified when Windows 10 is ready. I haven't yet checked for the
links you mentioned such as get started, let's go, etc. etc. I have a
feeling that the steps for installation will be easy to follow once Windows
10 is ready to install. Microsoft mentions in the various faqs and other
information on the page where you reserved Windows 10 that it will be
downloaded in the background, and that when it is ready to install that
we'll be notified. Nobody'll be left out, smile. I haven't gotten an
e-mail either, but I am sure that I will. Once I send this e-mail, I'm
going to check for the links you mentioned.

So, how do you go about starting the update? I haven't got an e-mail
stating it's ready for me to install, and yes, I did reserve a copy back in
the days.

The icon says I'll be notified, in the system tray, but I see links like get

started, let's go, reboot now, continue, etc.

Is it just that they are rolling it out little by little, or by now, should
I have access to it?

If so, then someone needs to give me the exact steps to start it installing.

I know the whole thing about removing W E first, etc. That's no issue. I
have NVDA as a backup, as well as jaws, so it's not the end of the world for

me. Plus, there's always Narrator, so I'm not in a pickle.

I'm quite savvy with my technology, so if you can just give me the steps, I
know beyond a doubt I can figure it out.

Chris.

Opinion on moving from the paid version of we to the free version

2015-07-29 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. I purchased my first s m a about a month ago. I'm speculating here,
but I feel that purchasing a software maintenance agreement was a wise
investment because if I hadn't purchased the agreement, I would have paid
the $49 plus whatever the next paid upgrade would cost, and for all I know I
might have spent about the same amount if not more. Also, Ai Squared's free
unlimited technical support is some of the best in the technology field if
you have a fully licensed copy of Window-eyes. I don't feel like paying for
support on a per incident basis. The costs could add up, smile. I'm
sticking with what I have.

RE: Using F8 in Browse Mode

2015-07-28 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Matt. Here's how to copy and paste text using the f8 key method. Find
the beginning of the text you want to copy. Press f8. Using your arrow
keys find the end of the text and press f8 again. Then as explained in an
earlier post, a dialog will pop up with three choices. Pick the choice you
want. The choices are copy plain text, copy with formatting, reset
selection or cancel. You don't need to press any other keys. As the
earlier post mentioned, the new copy method is how sighted people copy and
paste text. The readme clearly mentions this in the section explaining the
changes between Window-eyes 8.4 and 9.0. The readme file is a valuable
resource which can help answer some of the questions posted to this list. I
used the copy and paste text method using the f8 key and it works
beautifully. And, oh yes, I am one of those who advocate for those who
would like to be able to use the traditional text selection method in
addition to the f8 copy and paste method.

Speaking of referring to the readme, or the e-mail Doug Geoffray posted
explaining how to install Windows 10 using Window-eyes 9.2 if you have it
installed, keep it around and go over it because it also is a valuable piece
of information. I tried to e-mail Doug privately but I got the e-mail
address wrong, and of course it bounced, smile. .

Hi, Folks. Have read the email on the F8 key, but can't seem to get

unable to copy to clipboard. What am I doing wrong? This is more

Window-eyes 9.2 is now available

2015-07-27 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. Those who are receiving an error when attempting to download the
upgrade of Window-eyes 9.2 have encountered this error before, smile, and
you are not alone, believe me!This isn't my first rodeo, and I am
certain I can speak for others. I tried downloading the upgrade from the
help menu on my desktop computer running Windows 8.1 and on my laptop
running Windows 7 64 bit home premium edition with the same error Loy
mentioned. I usually have been able to get an upgrade installed on the day
of its release, but I'll try every few minutes as in the past. I have
personal business to take care of later on today, and so if I don't get the
upgrade downloaded and installed before that time, that will allow more time
for a break, smile. This upgrade sounds very promising, and yes, I reserved
my copy of Windows 10, smile. Also, when I try to check the update page to
go over the information concerning the s m a count and the other various
messages, the page will not load. I, like others, am chalking things up to
the overwhelmed servers. Chris, hammered sounds like a good word, smile. .

Window-eyes 9.2 is now available

2015-07-27 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Here's a follow up message. Just before I started to type this e-mail, I
received two different messages when trying to download Window-eyes 9.2.
The first message that came up was a message telling me that an active
internet connection is required to download the upgrade. I tried the bard
website and the page came right up. I then once again tried to download
Window-eyes 9.2, but rather than waiting a few minutes for the error to be
generated, the error generated immediately when pressing the enter key.
This scenario occurred using Internet Explorer 11. Yes, I have Firefox and
Google Chrome installed And I received the second error message twice
immediately when pressing the enter key. .

Well, after I send this message, I'm gonna give the download another whirl,
smile.

RE: Checking Maintainance Agreement

2015-07-27 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Mike. Here are the steps I follow to check the status of the software
maintenance agreement. Open the Window-eyes control panel as usual. Press
alt-h to open the help menu. Press up or down arrow until you come to check
for updates and press enter. Since Window-eyes 9.2 has become available,
the page is displaying differently I just now tried to access the page
again and had to tab to the visit update website button since I'm not
certain focus is on the button or not. When the page opens, Focus is on the
button which I verified.. After the page opens where you check for
updates, press enter on the visit update website. Since there is a lot of
internet traffic because people are trying to download the upgrade, the page
may not load. But if it does load, use the usual navigation keys to find
the status of your s m a if you have paid for one. For the person who asked
if the upgrade is a paid upgrade, if you have a software maintenance
agreement, the upgrade is free. Please refer to the readme which clearly
explains the upgrade information. I would suggest contacting Ai Squared to
find out about the price of an upgrade is you don't have an s m a. To be
fair, I'm going to go over the readme file again. The check for updates
page still will not load.

Office Updates

2015-07-26 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, all. I hope someone on this list can give me a little bit of a memory
jog, smile.

Shortly after I turned on my Dell Xps-8500 desktop running Windows 8.1 and
Office 2013, a notification popped up telling me that there are updates for
Office available. But when I found the item in the system tray, pressing
enter on the item didn't do anything. So, I tabbed to the double left click
button and pressed enter on that button. Still nothing happened. Now when
I try to focus on the button in the system tray, the Office updates are
available notification is read followed by the word button. Then I also
hear stuff like Winamp agent button, Window-eyes, and maybe any other items
in the system tray. And when I try to tab after highlighting the Office
updates button, the tab key won't work now.

Could someone on this list refresh my memory as to how to get the updates to
install? If not, then I'll call the Microsoft Accessibility answer desk
number. The representatives have been a god send in my humble opinion.
Here's the number in case someone isn't aware of it. The number is:
1-800-936-5900. Oh, my Dell Xps-501-l laptop running Office 2013 under
Windows 7 64 bit home edition, hasn't given me the notification yet Thanks
for reading, smile. .

Windows 10

2015-07-22 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Steven. While I do not work for Ai Squared, I think I can answer your
questions in this manner. Yes, other screen reader companies are saying
that their next updates are ready to be used with Windows 10. Yes, Ai
Squared mentioned that Window-eyes 9.1 has preliminary support for Windows
10. This leads me to believe that the next version of Window-eyes which is
going to be version 9.2 will be ready for Windows 10. I can understand your
questions because Ai Squared has said very little about Window-eyes 9.2.
What I am saying is this. Ai Squared wouldn't have its customers be unable
to use Window-eyes with Windows 10. Ai Squared has mentioned that
Window-eyes 9.2 will be released soon. How soon? Nobody knows except the
Ai Squared staff, smile. I've been using Window-eyes since April of 1999,
and Window-eyes has kept up with every Windows operating system since
Windows 95. When I started using Window-eyes, I used version 3.0 under
Windows 98. Ai Squared won't let us down, in my humble opinion. I'm pretty
sure you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 just fine. .

RE: Finding All Programs

2015-07-05 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. I hope the steps I give you will be of help to you. Access the control
panel in whatever manner you use. A trick one of the list members suggested
to access the control panel when Windows 8.0 was released work the same way
in Windows 8.1. Here are the never forgotten steps I use, smile. Press the
Windows key and the letter x. You'll have a list of items and in the list
of items I press the letter p followed by enter. The control panel opens.
When the control panel opens, if you find a button that says category, press
enter on it. Then, find a button that says large or small icons. Press
enter on the large icon button. Then you should be able to find your
programs under programs and features by first letter navigation. Here's a
heads up to the list member who provided the steps. I plan to e-mail you
privately when Windows 10 is closer to release. Thanks again for your
instructions, and you know who you are, grin. .

Rick. The item in the system tray is a notification that you can reserve
your copy of Windows 10 which will be released on July 29. If you reserve
Windows 10, Microsoft will notify you so you can download it. Windows 10
can be installed at your convenience. As to whether or not if it is safe
 to
download and install Windows 10, I don't feel that I'm qualified to answer
that question. Windows 10 is still in beta and I'm not one of those who

RE: Windows 10 Question

2015-06-24 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Well, you can't get the item out of the system tray. It's not hurting
anything. You canceled your reservation for Windows 10, therefore, you have
nothing to be concerned about. From the various comments, I am thinking
that folks are making more out of the issue than there really is. in my
opinion. Even if you hadn't canceled your reservation for Windows 10, you
are under no obligation to install it. All of the information is on the
site where you reserve or cancel your Windows 10 upgrade. Oh, yes, I
reserved a copy of Windows 10 on my computer running Windows 8.1 as well as
my laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.

Mike M

P.S. Like I mentioned earlier, I checked to see if the get Windows 10
button is in the system tray, and indeed it is still there. I wasn't even
sure the button was in the system tray until I checked for it. At least
Microsoft isn't forcing us to upgrade to Windows 10, although from comments
I have heard through the grapevine, I have a feeling that they are trying to
encourage their customers to upgrade, just like A I Squared encourages its
customers to upgrade Window-eyes, smile. .

RE: question about wineyes with windows 10

2015-06-23 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Rick. The item in the system tray is a notification that you can reserve
your copy of Windows 10 which will be released on July 29. If you reserve
Windows 10, Microsoft will notify you so you can download it. Windows 10
can be installed at your convenience. As to whether or not if it is safe to
download and install Windows 10, I don't feel that I'm qualified to answer
that question. Windows 10 is still in beta and I'm not one of those who is
brave enough to try public betas of Windows 10 or any other public previews
of Microsoft products.

P.S. If you click on the notification regarding Windows 10, you should be
taken to a website explaining all you need to know. .

2015-06-23 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Ok, could one of you who have tried public previews of Windows 10 please
answer Rick's question? Sorry, Rick, but as I indicated in my previous
post, I don't try public betas of Windows. That's why I can't answer your
question. Let us know how you like Windows 10 using Window-eyes.

Is Windows 10 accessible?

2015-06-02 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Although I do not work for A I Squared, I'm going to comment on this thread
based on logic and common sense.

Russ, thanks for pointing the issues out concerning whether or not Windows
10 will work with current pc's. Despite the fact that display issues and
other compatibility issues were detected by the check pc feature, I'm
willing to make a friendly wager that A I Squared and Freedom Scientific
will get things sorted out before the final release of Windows 10. A I
Squared hasn't even put together a presentation about Window-eyes and its
interaction with Windows 10. The July 29 release date gives the screen
reader developers plenty of time to resolve the various issues. Let's give
A I Squared the benefit of the doubt. I'll bet that the folks at A I
Squared know things regarding the upcoming release of Windows 10 that they
won't comment on for confidential reasons.

Seeking your input

2015-05-28 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
I would like to see o c r capability because it is incorporated into other
screen readers. I would also like to have the ability to be able to have
the keyboard be able to interact with buttons that require a mouseclick on
such sites as Walmart.com or amazon.com payment sites. I would like
Window-eyes to be better at detecting error reports. What I mean by that is
that occasionally Window-eyes generates an error report causing the need to
shut down and reboot the computer. After the computer is rebooted, the
error report can't be found in the help section. If Window-eyes generated an
error report, why is it that sometimes an error report is not found after a
reboot?

Kim. You are already subscribed because your messages have been coming
through to the list. When Ai Squared made the changes to the list, list
subscribers were switched to the new list. List traffic has merely slowed
down to pretty much a trickle. You asked if the list is still around. It
most certainly is.

RE: is anyone using the vocalizer expriseve voices if so what do you think of them?

2015-04-13 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Casey. When I found the last word at the end of the message above your
signature, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what you meant by
equalence. I was like, huh? Then it hit me. Oh, you meant Eloquence,
smile. That is my preferred synthesizer. I purchased the Vocalizer
Expressive voices, but I don't really use them, so I don't feel I should
comment as to whether or not I like them.

RE: eliminating slash

2015-02-11 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi, Bud. The way I deal with the slashes and other punctuation such as
dashes and parentheses and other various symbols is this. You have the
right idea. Go to the screen node, expand it, then go to punctuation and
tab to the math symbols and select either dictionary only or off. I select
off. I don't use Firefox enough to determine whether or not the same thing
happens.

Mike M

P.S. This issue only occurs if you uninstall and reinstall Window-eyes. If
you merely upgrade, you use the quick start wizard and make certain that you
leave your changes alone, smile. .

Hi Gang,

When wineyes reads on line or any other place as far as that goes, it
reads all the slashes. I looked under screen and also under
verbosity but couldn't find anywhere to eliminate it reading
slashes. Did I miss something or can't that be changed. Am running
windoweyes ver 9 and windows 7 64 bit.
Thanks.
