Re: where am I

2018-04-13 Thread Eric Oyen
yeah, that is the problem with a text only media. no real way to tell proper
humor. It's a lot like my phone. the only time it's funny is when it thinks
that it is traveling around in a loop at 672 mph (all the while, standing
still). btw, it takes sound 1.0710275 seconds to travel 1000 feet, so for 2
seconds, it thinks it's going from 1000 feet west of me to 1000 feet east of
me. that's just slow enough for me to read it in real time on one of the GPS
apps while connected to my braille sense U2. It gets fun watching those numbers
move around real fast.

Hi

Open the phone app..Tap on Contacts, in the bottom middle tab...Find your
contact that is blocked. Tap to open..Do NOT tap on Edit..Swipe down to the
bottom. Block/Unblock is the very last option on the page. Tap to
block/Unblock...You will get a popup asking you to confirm your choice of

I need some urgent help please. For some reason one of my friends is showing up
as a blocked caller now on my phone. I have gone into contacts double tap the
edit button and I do not see an option to on block this caller. I have no idea
how she got block to start with. But I found out because she tried to call and
leave a voicemail. And it said that it was blocked. It won’t even let me play
it. So I need some help as to how to unblock her. Thank you.

Updates that seem like downgrades

2018-04-13 Thread Bill Outman
Hi, list.

That thread recently about the frustration of updates that seem like
downgrades was interesting, but I have a take on it that might give everyone
a laugh.

Bill from Wisconsin mentioned there can be issues with object oriented
programming, which he abbreviated as OOP, which can cause problems for
developers.

Well, it occurred to me that one of these problems could be called an OOPS,
as in a mistake. That would stand for object oriented programming snafu.

I hope everyone enjoyed that tidbit.

command N in the mail app, for example. On my braille display is space with

command key together? I tried both ways and none of them took me to the compose

Thanks.

I am using Money Talks and I find it difficult to understand the voice
synthesizers that come with that product. I have Zoom Text and Jaws Speech
engines on my computer, but Money Talks cannot use them.

Using Jaws in Money Talks is clumsy. Jaws only reads one cell at a time and
require too much maneuvering with the left and right arrow to read the content

Does anyone know of any voice synthesizers that I can download that will work
with that product.

Thanks.

Re: Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi Mary

Yes, it does have on board internal storage capacity. There is a switch with 2
settings. If you have it to the left then the BI 14 runs its own internal notes
application, allowing you to make as many notes whenever and wherever you like.
You can then also ask the Brailliant to sync these notes to your I-device and
vice versa. If you flick the switch to the right then it just becomes a Braille
display/keyboard for your I-device. You can’t attach anything like a memory
stick to the Brailliant in order to provide external storage, but that’s not
the point of the machine - the point of it is to be able to make notes really
easily on the go without having to carry a lot of large equipment around with
you.

RE: App for reading txt and pdf files

2018-04-13 Thread Alan Lemly
You might try the Dolphin Easy Reader. I've started playing around with it a
bit but don't have much experience at this point. I still really like Voice
Dream Reader and don't like learning a lot of apps the do the same thing.

you should see what happens with my phone sometimes. I will have it sitting
here on the desk and all of the sudden, it goes into do not disturb mode.

So, I opened up one of the gPS apps I have (Navigon in this case) and left it
run. when the Do Not Disturb popped up, I grabbed the phone and checked how far
it allegedly moved. Here's the real kicker, for 2 minutes, it traveled 1000
feet to the west at 672 mph, then proceeded 2000 feet to the east at 672 mph
and went back and forth like that for 3 minutes. Yet, the phone physically
didn't move.

The two things I noted about this:
1. the direction was always east and west
2. the speed of transit is always that of a jet aircraft at full cruise I think
when it happens again, I am going to call up a friend of mine at sky harbor
airport ops and find out if there is any air traffic transiting the space
above me at 30k feet going either east or west I have already checked with a
ham radio sat tracker program I have here, so I know where the GPS sats are in
near real time. If what I think is happening really is, then it would be
possible to know when something is overflying my place. :)

I am using Money Talks and I find it difficult to understand the voice
synthesizers that come with that product. I have Zoom Text and Jaws Speech
engines on my computer, but Money Talks cannot use them.

Using Jaws in Money Talks is clumsy. Jaws only reads one cell at a time and
require too much maneuvering with the left and right arrow to read the content
of the transactions. while Money Talk voices read the whole row as you down
arrow through the transactions, Making navigation much easier and more
efficient.

Does anyone know of any voice synthesizers that I can download that will work
with that product.

Thanks.

I wonder if anyone has or has seen one of these in action. It’s just finally
been released, having been announced last year. It’s claim to fame is that
it instantly will sync with your eye devices via an app that’s available in
the App Store. What interests me is to know if the notetaking capability in
the device is independent. That is. Can you access the things you input
using the device, manipulating the notes, deleting them etc. If it’s not, I
don’t find this terribly interesting. But for just slightly less than $1000,
I suppose it could be interesting if it really could act as an independent
notetaking device. I’m also not thrilled with only 14 Braille cells. It’s
hard to take that seriously.

Re: looking for feedback about problems with braille displays and typing feedback

2018-04-13 Thread Scott Davert
I've already filed that one on AppleVis and I will be doing so tonight
through the Feedback app. While it didn't start with the newest beta,
that doesn't mean it can't be reported that way. Smiles. I'm having
some other issues in 11.3 concerning text input. In messages
particularly, it seems that the braille driver is crashing. When I
type rapidly, VoiceOver will fall way behind early on. Have you
noticed this also?

RE: Voice Synthesizers

Hi. Money talks will work with jaws if you have installed the latest update.

Subject: Voice Synthesizers

I am using Money Talks and I find it difficult to understand the voice
synthesizers that come with that product. I have Zoom Text and Jaws Speech
engines on my computer, but Money Talks cannot use them.

Using Jaws in Money Talks is clumsy. Jaws only reads one cell at a time and
require too much maneuvering with the left and right arrow to read the content
of the transactions. while Money Talk voices read the whole row as you down
arrow through the transactions, Making navigation much easier and more
efficient.

Does anyone know of any voice synthesizers that I can download that will work
with that product.

Thanks.

Re: Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello,

Only time will tell. I think that HumanWare is looking at the Brailliant BI 14
being the only display for now with the sync feature, as it’s so portable. It
is a great start to slightly more affordable braille displays.

Thanks,

Ed

What's wrong with using the Dropbox app and VoiceOver?
Or, the app you used to create the text files.
I'm not sure exactly what you are wanting to do.

Re: Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi Ed

I completely agree with all your points.

The biggest improvement I’d like to see would be the ability to unlock/wake
your IOS device from the Brailliant, rather than it always having to be the
other way round - that got really frustrating!!

On a slightly different point, but still one related to Braille
notetakers/displays. I’m currently writing a document in KeyWord on my
BrailleNote Touch, and I desperately need to put some page breaks in/force the
document to start a new page. I can’t work out for the life of me how to do it.
So if anyone knows would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Eleanor

Voice Synthesizers

2018-04-13 Thread M Tobia
I am using Money Talks and I find it difficult to understand the voice
synthesizers that come with that product. I have Zoom Text and Jaws Speech
engines on my computer, but Money Talks cannot use them.

Using Jaws in Money Talks is clumsy. Jaws only reads one cell at a time and
require too much maneuvering with the left and right arrow to read the content
of the transactions. while Money Talk voices read the whole row as you down
arrow through the transactions, Making navigation much easier and more
efficient.

Does anyone know of any voice synthesizers that I can download that will work
with that product.

Thanks.
Mario

App for reading txt and pdf files

2018-04-13 Thread Alexandra
Hi,

which app do you use for reading your own texts? I'm looking for an app that
allows me to read my own txt and pdf files stored in dropbox conviniently.
Voice dream reader wouldn't be my first choice, as I find it rather overloaded
with features and don't like the way menues are presented. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve,

yOu might have turned on VoiceOVer Navigation, which makes the digital crown
flick through items on the screen instead of perform its normal functions. To
find out triple-tap with two fingers. VoiceOver will say, "Digital crown
navigation on" or "Digital crown navigation off." You can repeat the command if
necessary to togggle navigation on or off.

Re: Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread Mary Otten
Oh wow! Sorry to hear about the battery problem. I’m also curious to know what
the improvements are that you would like to see. I’m really glad it can be used
independently to access whatever you put in there. I wouldn’t see writing an
essay on it either. 14 sell display just wouldn’t lend itself to reading an
essay for one thing. But I could see it for meeting notes and shopping list
etc. Just I wish it had maybe 20 sales. I would pay a bit more for a few more
cells. Oh well.

Re: Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi Mary

Yes, I’ve seen and have purchased a Brailliant BI 14. It arrived a couple of
weeks ago, and I’ve been getting on well with it. It can either act as a
Braille display and keyboard for your I-device, or it can act as a totally
independent note taker.

Where interacting with an I-device is concerned, it seems to work very well and
does everything you’d expect it to. I do have a couple of criticisms of it, but
they are more like things that HumanWare could do to further improve the device
as opposed to actual criticisms, and I’ll certainly be feeding those back.

>From the point of view of the independent notetaker, yes, it works, and yes,
>you can delete notes etc. You can also then sync your notes to your I-devices
>if/when you want to. Not sure I’d go writing an essay on it, but in terms of
>ease, portability, and use on the go then yes, it seems good.

I was meant to be having a day’s training on it, but that’s been postponed for
now as the units have been recalled (something to do with the battery). So
hopefully once that’s happened I’ll know more about it.

Brailliant BI 14

2018-04-13 Thread Mary Otten
I wonder if anyone has or has seen one of these in action. It’s just finally
been released, having been announced last year. It’s claim to fame is that it
instantly will sync with your eye devices via an app that’s available in the
App Store. What interests me is to know if the notetaking capability in the
device is independent. That is. Can you access the things you input using the
device, manipulating the notes, deleting them etc. If it’s not, I don’t find
this terribly interesting. But for just slightly less than $1000, I suppose it
could be interesting if it really could act as an independent notetaking
device. I’m also not thrilled with only 14 Braille cells. It’s hard to take
that seriously.

Re: where am I

2018-04-13 Thread Eric Oyen
unfortunately, given some "features" of my psyche, some kinds of humor are not
comprehended. :( it's part and parcel of being on the asperger's spectrum. It's
also probably why it is that I am so good at technology related items.

anyway, on the technical end of things, the nearest thing I can figure on the
daily (and always inside the same 2 hour window) is that I am seeing a
reflection of signal off an aircraft in the aircraft control corridor that
exists from here to california. in any case, it makes for an interesting math
problem. :)

um, that is not exactly the way that GPS works. In order for this "hand off" to
occur, there would also have to be interaction from the device to the sats and
there just isn't the spectrum space or bandwidth to handle several tens of

RE: Overcast: Streaming or Downloading?

2018-04-13 Thread Alan Lemly
Kelby,

It sounds as if you've got the correct setting for streaming new episodes when
played. If the episodes are still being downloaded, I could not find a setting
that would prevent this. I assume you've got your delete played episodes
setting set to when completed so that they don't linger on your device taking
up space. My opinion is that based on the language used in these various
settings, an automatic download that can't be changed must occur.

I found an excellent article reviewing Overcast and comparing it with a few
other podcast apps here:

https://thesweetsetup.com/apps/our-favorite-podcast-client-for-ios/

It did mention the ability of Overcast to stream but didn't say anything about
your issue of preventing any episode downloads.

Subject: Overcast: Streaming or Downloading?

All,

In Overcast, I have new episodes set to stream. However, when I click on a new
episode it still ends up downloading while it is playing. (So, for instance, if
I go offline I can still listen to it.) I want the episodes to stream without
actually downloading to my phone. Is this possible?

Re: where am I

Given what Eric wrote about his GPS “speed of light” experience, I have to
wonder if Eric is not sitting on the cusp of two separate satellites that are
continually “handing off” his device to each other. Just a thought.

2. the speed of transit is always that of a jet aircraft at full cruise I think
when it happens again, I am going to call up a friend of mine at sky harbor
airport ops and find out if there is any air traffic transiting the space
above me at 30k feet going either east or west I have already checked with a

near real time. If what I think is happening really is, then it would be
possible to know when something is overflying my place. :)

RE: Weight Watcher's App

I have recently started to use this app and it is accessible.

All:

Does anyone know if this app is still accessible? Several years ago I used it
and it was. However, recently a friend joined it and apparently it is not
working for her. I’m sure it has been upgraded many times since I used it. Any
info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

sure. It never asked me when I installed it to track my location. Not sure
what good it would do since the station selection is good, at least one station
in every state and D. C. and Puerto plus some Canadian provinces, but isn’t

I am running this app with an iPhone 5S with iOS 10; that is all about to be
upgraded at some point soon. So I can’t speak to if it even works in version
11.

Most of the buttons and tabs seem to speak. I usually use the radio tab and
swipe over to the list of states and provinces, which will list the available
stations. I can enter a state, such as Florida, where I happen to live, and go
through the list of stations and double tap the button for the staion I want,
for example Daytona Beach, which is my local station. It doesn’t have every
station in the system, but it does have quite a selection. Sometimes you have
to be aware of where the station might be located, for example, if you were
looking for Cincinnati, you would not find it in Ohio since the station is over
the river in Covington, Kentucky, so it is in that list. I discovered that

When you open a station it should automatically play, and then you can swipe
right over to pause to stop the broadcast when you are done, which is
announced.

I had originally found this app through ViA, which was an accessible app guide
app from the Braill Institute of Los Angeles which I used to have on my phone.
I took ViA off my phone as it was taking up a small amount of space, I wasn’t
really using it any more and I was unsure it it would survive transitioning to

Is there a simple way to have my phone tell me that we are at home?

  Any tips would be appreciated.

Placed order with Safeway: wasn’t easy

2018-04-13 Thread Kathy Brandt
Not like it used to be. Thankfully, you could read all the items in your cart,
which had been a problem before when I could read the first few items, but then
it’s skipped to the end of what I had, and so had to scroll backwards a few
lines at a time to get a semblance of what else was there. However, when in
promotional items, and if you went to a particular one, and added one to your
cart, it could take a little doing since you can’t scroll through many items at
a time, to find where you left off in the list.

The fun really began at checkout time: as was my previous problem, I could
select the date, but not the order time, which proved to be the case when I
went to the website. I then tried turning voiceover off, and double tapping
time I wanted. It worked. I wish they would just have links for the times the
way they used to; I’m not really sure what the enabled and disabled arrows are
supposed to do. For my substitutions, when I wasn’t sure when I hit no
substitutions that it was actually selected, since there was no feedback, I
went into the customize area, and selected the third check box for each item,
and was able to find out later that that third check box was correct, when it
said “no substitutions, 11 items“. After my date and time were selected, I was
able to add my promotional codes. Then, for “place order”, on the website, I
couldn’t get that button to work, even turning voiceover off, trying a number
of times. When I closed out of Safari and went back into the app, however, the
place order button worked. I wanted to see if I could change The day and
delivery time in the app: again, I had to turn voiceover off, hopefully double
tap on the right place for selecting my time, and turn voiceover back on. I did
this in the place where it says to edit pending orders, choosing the option
where it says to edit date and time. This is no way to have to check out; I
just wanted to do it to see if in any way it was possible to get through the
order process.

RE: NOAA weather radio app

2018-04-13 Thread Bill Outman
I thought I saw something about location tracking in the app someplace, I’m not
sure. It never asked me when I installed it to track my location. Not sure
what good it would do since the station selection is good, at least one station
in every state and D. C. and Puerto plus some Canadian provinces, but isn’t
exhaustive. If it did track location you might be able to set up automatic
alerts of warnings, and there are other ways of getting those.

Hope this info is of some value.

I discovered that
when I was chedcking weather for the Cubs vs. Reds baseball series last week.

When you open a station it should automatically play, and then you can swipe
right over to pause to stop the broadcast when you are done, which is
announced.

I had originally found this app through ViA, which was an accessible app guide
app from the Braill Institute of Los Angeles which I used to have on my phone.
I took ViA off my phone as it was taking up a small amount of space, I wasn’t
really using it any more and I was unsure it it would survive transitioning to
iOS 11. So it seems to be a handy app to have around; I hope it survives the
upgrade.

Re: where am I

2018-04-13 Thread Eric Oyen
you should see what happens with my phone sometimes.

RE: where am I

2018-04-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
GPS accuracy is going to be about 15 feet at best and sitting inside does not
give you good signal quality. The GPS signal is very weak, I read an article
once where they compared it with looking at a Christmas light that is up on a
satellite in space. Nowadays the receives are very good and sensitive, I
remember when I first had my retail store 18 years ago and sold Garmin GPS
units you often would not get a signal under heavy tree cover or if you were in
a narrow valley and even nowadays the accuracy can go way down the tube if you
are in a big city with lots of highrise building around you. GPS is fantastic,
but you have to be aware of its limitations and factor them in.

Re: NOAA weather radio app

2018-04-13 Thread 'Ray T. Mahorney' via VIPhone
I’m surprised that does not appear to use location tracking.

I discovered that
when I was chedcking weather for the Cubs vs.

I took ViA off my phone as it was taking up a small amount of space, I wasn’t
really using it any more and I was unsure it it would survive transitioning to
iOS 11. So it seems to be a handy app to have around; I hope it survives the
upgrade.
