Re: [WAMUG] Iinet/Westnet/TPG/internode etc stopping email address hosting

2023-08-01 Thread Pete Smith via WAMUG
   G’day Daniel.

I saw on Internode’s site today that they have not been hosting new
email addresses since 20 June or thereabouts but I didn’t see anything
about current ones. Mind you, I wasn’t looking because I was trying to
access my webmail because Mail was stuffing me around yet again.
Interestingly, I couldn’t access that at the time as well.

I might ring them tomorrow to check if my problems are in anyway
concerned with their new system, although my mail works fine from the
   iPhone.

   I’m off hunting now.

   Pete Smith

   Hi All
An interesting piece of info was brought to my attention, and to be
honest I hadn’t seen it previously. - (definitely not an email from
iinet advising me of the change. Possibly an email will come later on
   perhaps?)
Apparently iinet/TPG and all it’s subsidiaries (Westnet, Internode etc)
have decided they are no longer going to host their customer’s emails.
(And new customers signing up are not given an @ISP email address).
They are moving it over to another business where they (the ISP) are
apparently paying for it for a year (up to Sept 2024 from what I can
gather), then after that if you then want to still keep using your @isp
email address, then you will have to pay for it. I haven’t seen any
plans as yet, but a few things I read said it could be “from $3.99 per
email address per month). - though doesn’t show what the quota would
   be.
Some other people had said to budget about $60 a year to keep the email
   address.
The “notice” is on all the ISP websites, so for example on the main
iinet home page (and same for Westnet, TPG, Internode etc), all have a
   link to information about it.
   https://help.iinet.net.au/iinet-email-messaging-company
Even the “new” company taking over (The Messaging Company), website's
   is fairly sparse on information.
Definitely going to be a bit of wake up call for a lot of people. Who
may have an @isp address for 20+ years, then find if they want to keep
it they now have to pay. And I’m sure the internet plans won’t see a
price decrease for the money saved on not supplying/hosting email
addresses. Hey, I could be wrong,…but, well….time will tell.
(I have an @iinet address that I’ve had for about 22+ years that I’ve
been with them - not that I use it very much….but it’s there).
I know I have quite a lot of clients that use their @isp address, so
definitely going to be a change for a lot of people.
Another good reason to have a domain name I guess, or a “free” email
address like @iCloud.com, @gmail.com etc- then you can change ISPs
without having to tell everyone your email address has changed.
(As an aside, the price is about “normal” - as I looked at some of the
“email only” hosting plans I have for clients and a 10GB plan is $60 a
   year per mailbox)
Definitely will be something to watch and see what happens with it.
Thought I’d post to the list as possibly others may not have seen or
   been aware of this. :)
   Kind regards
   Daniel

Re: [WAMUG] Fttp and isps …not an Apple question

2023-07-12 Thread Pete Smith via WAMUG
   Hi Rosemary.

I got a similar flyer a while ago too. I’m with Internode - who got
taken over by iiNet and then TPG too; although they are still
maintaining a separate existence. Anyway, when I rang them all excited,
they said they were not yet able to provide it at my address but hoped
they would in the future. Apparently, whilst NBN can provide the
infrastructure, it is the service provider who actually ‘provides’ the
   service.

My understanding is that when Internode, and presumably Westnet, get
around to providing the service, NBN will lay the fibre to the house
part and then Internode will provide all the rest.

That’s my take on it. I am very well satisfied with Internode so I’m
just waiting for them to do their bit. Presumably, it must some
infrastructure thing at their exchanges or somewhere.

Now that I’ve written this, I’m going online to see if they have
   changed anything.

   Pete Smith

Re: [WAMUG] Mailboxes - Authentication Failures

2023-07-11 Thread Pete Smith via WAMUG
   Thanks Daniel,

As it turned out, I had all the correct details entered but I reentered
them anyway and the only difference I made was unticking the
“Automatically mange connection settings” on the Incoming Mail Server
areas. The Outgoing Mail Server areas were not ticked to start with. I
also reentered my passwords (had to look up 1Password for those!) hit
save and Bob’s your Uncle, connection and download.

Fixed both the iMac and the iPhone and all going great guns at the
   moment.

Thanks again Daniel. Very much appreciated

   Hi Pete
The first thing I’d recommend would be to check the settings and
   adjust.
Sometimes it can just be a slight change in a setting that throws it
   out.
In Mail - Preferences - Accounts
Clcik on the account on the left hand side, then on the right hand side
   click on “Server Settings”.
If the account has the setting “Automatically manage connection
settings” (for both incoming and outgoing), untick those.
This then gives you more control to adjust settings.
You can play around with the ports and Use TLS/SSL. And also ensure
both are set to “authentication” Password.
The main ports can differ depending on your connection, but you can
sort of “mix and match” and try a different port to see if it helps.
Internode recommend the following ports -
   https://www.internode.on.net/support/guides/email/secure_email/
If using IMAp and an SSL connection then it’s 993 for IMAP incoming and
995 for Outgoing. (But you can also use port 143 for incoming and 465
   for SMTP outgoing.
They would be the main ones to try and adjust. Then see how it goes.
Sometimes you have to Quit and re-open Mail for it to “adjust” to the
   new setting.
If using you’re IMAP accounts, then yes it’s fine to delete them and
re-add them - as everything will still be on the server.
If using POP accounts however, then if you delete it, everything in
Inbox, Sent, Trash folders will be deleted. (So need to save them to
   local On My Mac folders).
But I’d try playing around with the settings first and see how it goes.
   Kind regards

I download all my emails from Internode physically onto my various
devices. The iMac is the main repository for all mailboxes with emails
going back to 2008 when I first got a Mac. The iPhone XR also a small
repository of emails. Once downloaded, the emails are deleted off the
Internode server after about 30 days from memory.

Which brings me to my main question: If I delete the “iPhone” and
“iPad” accounts from the iMac and reinstall them, will I lose all those
old emails? The same for the iPhone XR?

I do have the emails backed-up as the system is backed-up regularly
with Carbon Copy but the point is would I lose the emails from the iMac
   and or iPhone hard drives?

I hope that all makes sense.

I wouldn’t trust it. I don’t think it’s Apple. That would an admission

I would just delete the email.

   That’s my personal view anyway.

Re: [WAMUG} Are You Receiving??

2021-12-07 Thread Pete Smith
Thanks Barry, Ronni and Tim.

We had a message sent to the list on 4 December about tonight’s User Group
meeting with all the Zoom information but, as we found out late today, it
didn’t get to the list. We were trying to work out if it was a problem at the
list end or maybe a problem with a particular computer. Hence the tests.

It appears that the list is working, although very quiet with the last previous
message being from 17 November 2021.

Having said that, I’ve just seen your second reply Ronni. You come up my end OK
but, interestingly, you don’t come up on on the Archive list.

(Hope you get this)

I have on my mail - My original post, a reply from Barry, then Ronni, then Tim
and from Ronni to Tim.

Thanks for the replies.

By the way - no User Group tonight unfortunately.

Regards,

Pete Smith

Re: Enquiry

2020-04-06 Thread Pete Smith
G’day Bill.

When you have the Word document open and go to Print and then save as PDF, you
can type or change the author's name then. That’s the name that comes up in
Books but it doesn’t change the name of the author within the document
properties.

You can also change the name within Books. I’ve done it a few times in the list
view.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tony.

Distance certainly makes it a tad difficult. A lot of our members are from the

Hopefully, you can get to a meeting or two during the year and we’ll look

WAMUG Meeting Reminder: This Tuesday 6 March 2018

2018-03-04 Thread Pete Smith
G’day all WAMUGERS.

With summer now over we are in for some nice, pleasant Autumn evenings -
apparently. What a great time to head on out to the WAMUG monthly meeting
coming up this Tuesday, 6 March 2018 at 7.30pm.

We have a couple of good topics for you this month. We’ll be looking at Airdrop
and some things to look out for and then we’ll take a look at Apple Wallet and
Apple Pay. Use your iPhone and leave your wallet at home. We will look at an
app that is available as a Wallet app so you you save all those pesky loyalty
cards on your iPhone and leave the actual cards at home.

Another app we will be looking at is able to scan and store those business
cards you get so you will never lose the one you want. Plus it’s free.

Maybe you know some good apps that blend in with Wallet. If so, why not come
along and share your knowledge.

So pack up your iPhones, iPads and Macs and head on out to Willeton.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

This year, the AGM will be held in April. More will be published after the
March monthly meeting but we are asking for people to consider coming onto the
committee to provide some fresh blood and ideas. It is not arduous and,
although there is a committee meeting every month, it’s OK if you miss some.

Please consider it. Nominations will be called for soon. - Thanks in advance

Malicious Email From A Nadia Maria Ochoa

2016-04-05 Thread Pete Smith
Hi all.

Just an advisory warning.

I got an email from a Nadia Maria Ochoa which was blank save for a zip file
titled Photos.zip and a subject of Photos. The sender’s address is
“nadia_m_ochoaXX" sent from “yahoo.es”. The XX is random numbers. It delivers
malware, specifically the Locky ransomware.

Delete it.

The name rings a bell so I don’t know if it’s been doing the rounds for awhile.

I found the following on the interwebby re the email address

PS I didn’t open it just deleted it.

iPad 2 iOS 9.3 New Update

2016-03-25 Thread Pete Smith
For those with iPad 2s, it seems the updated update has been released.

I downloaded the original 9.3 the other day but didn’t install it. When I
connected my iPad to iTunes yesterday up popped the box asking me if if I
wanted to update it then or later. I chose later purely because I wanted to
download 1 app update first. Lucky!! After I synced that app I then tried to
update the iPad only to be told that I was up-to-date with 9.2.1. I even tried
the check for updates button but still no luck. I thought that later button
must really mean "a lot later”.

Anyway, plugged it into iTunes tonight, got the ‘an update available - download
or download and instal’ message, so hit the download and instal and all went
smoothly. I just spent the time reading through WAMUG mail and finding out
about the iOS 9.3 problems!! Anyway, my iPad updated and is running well.

Now I’m off to bed for an early start to Rotto with my working iPad on 9.3 iOS.

Cheers all

Re: Problem with App Store today ?

2014-11-19 Thread Pete Smith
G’day Stephen.

I have just accessed both the App Store for Mac and the iTunes App Store and
have not had any blank screens. Clicked randomly on a few apps. I am currently
downloading updates from the iTunes one and have updates from the Mac one to do
immediately after.

I don’t seem to have any problems.

Re: Magic Mouse issues ?

2014-04-13 Thread Pete Smith
Hi Steven and Jennifer.

Are you using Eveready AA batteries?

I had the same problem with my Magic Mouse and it was so bad that on a number
of occasions it flew forcefully across the room. Luckily I had enough control
to aim for the soft leather recliner. I loathed it so much and have never hated
anything before as much as I did hate it then.

It got to the stage where it was unusable. I researched the internet and
finally booked a session at the Genius bar. The solution??

Don’t use Eveready AA batteries. They are about 1-2 millimetres shorter than
other batteries and consequently lose connection very, very easily. I tried
putting paper in to tighten the grip and stop movement, as suggested, which
worked for a little bit but the Genius Bar bloke actually showed me a
comparison of an Eveready AA and another AA battery. The Eveready Super Heavy
Duty AA is definitely shorter. There is one type of Eveready AA that is the
longer size but which one escapes me. It’s not Duracell though. It was the
first question he asked me when I took it in - with my Eveready AA Super Heavy
Duty batteries of which I had just purchased three bulk packs on
sale

He also ran all the diagnostics on the mouse (with another set of batteries in
it) and there was absolutely no problem with it.

Anyway, I invested in an Apple recharger and set of six batteries and my Magic
Mouse has not flown anywhere since and I’m happily using it with no lost
connections. It has forgiven me for forcing it to fly when it did not want to
and we now spend hours together on the computer in peaceful harmony.

As a sideline, apparently there is not as much trouble using the Eveready AAs
in the wireless keyboard or Trackpad, although I did have some trouble with my
Trackpad but nowhere near as much as the mouse. My Trackpad never flew anywhere.

So, if you are using Eveready AA batteries, I’d bet your annual income that
that’s the problem.

Hope this helps

Pete Smith

Re: List membership 2014

2014-01-13 Thread Pete Smith
G’day Reg.

Memberships are due for renewal at 1 January but there is no automatic
cancelation from posting to the list. We give a reasonable amount of time to do
it.

Beside which, I usually send out a reminder which I have failed to do so far so
I do apologise for that.

We wouldn’t even look at the possibility of removing posting privileges until
at least February or so. The friendship would have to be really stretched
before we did.

Hope this helps.

MacUpdate bundle a Question

2013-09-27 Thread Pete Smith
Hi all.

Two things. Information and a question if I may please.

First, the information. There is a MacUpdate bundle deal currently running with
just over five days to go. Apps in the bundle are:

1) TechTool Pro 7 - Intel • OS X 10.6 or later
2) ScreenFlow 4 - Intel • OS X 10.6 or later
3) PDFpen 6 (with upgrade to Pro for only $20) - Intel, 64-bit processor •
OS X 10.7 or later
4) Civilization V: Gold Edition - Intel, 64-bit processor • OS X 10.6.4 or
later 2.4GHz or faster • 256MB+ video card • Steam [don't ask what the steam is
all about.
5) Snapheal Pro - Intel, 64-bit processor • OS X 10.7 or later
6) Vitamin-R 2.0 - Intel, 64-bit processor • OS X 10.7 or later
7) DeltaWalker 1.9 (with free upgrade to 2.0) - Intel, 64-bit processor •
OS X 10.5 or later
8) Choco 2 - Intel, 64-bit processor • OS X 10.7 or later
9) Aurora 5 - Intel, 64-bit processor • OS X 10.8 or later
Bonus App) FotoMagico 4

https://deals.macupdate.com/bundle/affil/14614

I will probably buy one because of the first three apps which brings me to my
question.

I've got an old, early 2008 iMac 8,1. I've checked my software list and the
64-bit processor part seems no problem but as I'm still running 10.6.8 Snow
Leopard, I know that I can't run the apps requiring 10.7 or later (eg PDFpen 6)
but am I right in assuming that I can still download and store the apps for
when I update later this year?

Many thanks in advance,

Pete Smith

Re: Proxy Form for SMG 5 March 2013

2013-03-01 Thread Pete Smith
Hi Laura.

I just tried the form out myself from my iMac. It opened OK and I completed
some data. My iMac, for some reason unknown to me, has stopped saving PDFs I
open on the internet so I did the usual print to PDf instead and, lo and
behold, I got two completely blank pages saved! Not happy Jan

However, when the PDF is opened in Safari, there is a magenta, purple or pink
(depending on what school you went to!) band across the top with the phrase
Please fill out the following form. You can save data typed into this form.
Immediately above this banner is a toolbar with the save disk icon on the far
left. I used that and the form saved to my folder with all data including my
entries. I then emailed it to myself and it arrived intact.

So, use the disk icon in the PDF's toolbar and it should save OK.

I apologise for any inconvenience. I did the form on Acrobat Writer at work and
did all the working and saving checks there. Unfortunately, that is a Windows
system. Naturally, the form was opened and saved with Adobe Reader. I checked
it was working last night when I uploaded it to the website from home but,
although I thought I checked the saving, I may not have. I'll blame the wee
hours of the morning.

WAMUG AGM Reminder; This Tuesday 5 March 2013

2013-02-28 Thread Pete Smith
Hi all WAMUGGERs.

The time is fast approaching for our annual general meeting (AGM) which is held
in conjunction with the March monthly meeting each year. This year's AGM will
be held in conjunction with the monthly meeting at the FutureSphere. Three
special resolutions in regards to the constitution and the possible name change
will also be put to vote at the meeting.

At this year's AGM, the Committee, as usual and as required, will stand down
and the meeting will elect a new committee for 2013.

NOMINATIONS for the Committee

We are calling for nominations for the committee. Please consider standing for
the committee to assist WAMUG. The committee is a totally voluntary group that
is always looking for some fresh views and ideas. Whilst committee meetings are
held every month, you may not be able to attend every one. Please don't let
this stand in your way. Even if you can only attend a few throughout the year,
please consider becoming a member. There is a committee email group that keeps
all connected as well.

The committee must have a minimum of five members to function under the
constitution. We currently just have that minimum five members. At this stage,
most of the current committee have stated a willingness to stand again but we
ask for your help to keep the committee functioning well.

Please consider it.

If you are going to be at the meeting, you can nominate on the night. If you
can't attend the AGM but would like to nominate to stand for the committee,
simply email me off list with your details and I will nominate you on the
night. (I couldn't the email address I was hoping to work - drats)

Special Resolutions - name change and constitution amendments

There will be three special resolutions put at the AGM dealing with the
previously discussed change of name of WAMUG plus some amendments recommended
by the Department of Commerce to comply with statute law.

These special resolutions are on the website along with a proxy voting form.
The proxy voting form is a PDf form that you download and complete online and
then attach to an email to send. The return address is on the website and the
proxy voting form.

I encourage all and sundry to vote and record your say.

Another email will be sent out shortly with details of the previous discussions
this list has had in respect to the proposed name change.

Re: ipad

2012-12-14 Thread Pete Smith
Hi Juliet.

My iPad 2 gets its music from my iMac whenever I sync with iTunes. You can
choose the whole library or just those songs ticked. This sync is automatic.
You can also sync manually.

The music has to be in iTunes, though.

I also have ticked the box to covert those songs above 128kbs to be 128kbs ACC
to save space. I can't hear any difference.

I don't know of any other way of getting music across.

The sync also takes across, podcast, TV shows and movies if I choose.

Hope this helps.

Re: WAMUG Christmas Barbecue Reminder: This Sunday 9 December 2012

2012-12-03 Thread Pete Smith
Hi Kevin and Mac.

As Daniel said, there should be a sign near the roundabout pointing where we
are. Daniel's instructions are pretty well on the money. However, if you go to
the website and clink on the link Heathcote Barbecue Spot in the notice, a
pretty good overhead photo of Heathcote will open and there is an arrow
pointing to where we shall be. The picture is virtually self explanatory as it
shows the parking area, roundabout and path leading off to the right.

Hope it helps.

The esky should be at the head of the arrow.

See you there hopefully.

Pete Smith

I may have my bearing off (and apologies if I do), and someone hopefully will

if you are facing towards the building, it is on the right hand side, more

It's also kinda near a platform that you go to and look out towards the water

But all more on the right hand side of things.

Not sure if that helps, and again apologies if I'm leading you down the

Mail Time Out By 1 Hour

2012-10-07 Thread Pete Smith
Here's an interesting thing.

Anyone else getting this?

I was just looking at Daniel's post when I became aware that in my mail box, it
says that his email was received at 15.30. Yet my iMac clock reads 14.56 as I
type. Also Daniel's email says it was sent at 2.30.16 PM AWST. I'm using Apple
Mail and this has only started today.

I've checked another email I received earlier and the same applies. I know
Apple stuff is good, but this is pushing it a bit!!:)

I assume it is something with the provider rather than Mail. I've sent them a
query so we'll see what happens. I'm with Internode and very happy with them.
However, their feedback emails are only monitored Monday to Friday normal
business times.

Daylight saving has started over there today (silly sods!!), so they've
probably cocked up the WA time.

I'll keep you posted.

Special General Meeting Postponement

2012-09-25 Thread Pete Smith
Hi all WAMUGGERs.

Due to unforeseen circumstances (not related to the proposed name change), the
special general meeting planned for Tuesday, 2 October 2012 has been cancelled.
It is envisaged that a special general meeting will be called to coincide with
the December monthly meeting to be held on Tuesday 4 December 2012, however,
you will be informed well in advance of the new date. Suffice to say it won't
be in November.

Part of the reasoning is that our constitution has been examined by the
Department of Commerce and, although they are generally happy with it, they
have highlighted certain points that technically do not conform with the
Associations Incorporation Act 1987. Consequently, they have 'strongly
recommended' that we amend our constitution to reflect the Act. These changes
are not major but are important.

The postponement of the special general meeting will also allow these special
resolutions to be incorporated into the meeting and voted on as well.

The committee apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused but feel that
the postponement is the appropriate thing to do.

Regards,

Pete Smith
On behalf of the WAMUG Committee.

Re: Proposed name change to Apple Users WA

2012-09-15 Thread Pete Smith
G'day Daniel.

No offence taken, nor even thought about.

I enjoy reading your posts when you explain things. After all, you're the
wizard and I'm just happy cruising through at the lower levels. You know my
knowledge - when they mentioned a couple of domains, I got all excited
thinking we going to crack a Domaine Chandon champagne or two - alas...

I missed your (below) post on Thursday. I was downloading the Apple Event
podcast when my iTunes told me of the update to 10.7 so I quickly posted it to
the list and didn't even see your one. Today's the first day back at the
computer. Well, mine, anyway, I'm sick of work's one.

The Apple Event was good. iPhone 5 - you little beauty

Cheers,

Pete Smith

First off, this is not meant to in any way to cause offence, or be seen to be
having a go, especially to you Pete and I apologise up front if it seems that
way. I also apologise if it gets taken the wrong way as well,…as it's meant
 in the sincerest way.

Though I understand that wanting to grab the domains before someone else did,
this is a lot more difficult for .org.au's to do. Sure, if this was a .com
 then I'd tend to agree.
A .com.au and .org.au hold a bit more weight to them when aiming to be
purchased. A .com.au can only be purchased with an ABN and has to have some
close resemblance to the Business Name or organisation.
A.org.au can only be purchased by a non-profit of charity organisation. And
normally those parties have to have a Certificate of Incorporation before
they can purchase it. (And perhaps a constitution as well, I'm not 100% sure
on that one). But it's certainly a lot harder for someone to sit on them for
the sake of sitting on them,….if that makes sense. i fully understand about
aiming to get them before someone else did and as long as a regulated
business is used to check domain names the risk of this happening is a lot
less (I've never been overtaken on checking a name for clients I've set
them up for and looked up, but I always use a well known and trusted domain
checker. And I can understand about worry about the use of a name in a public
forum where it may get taken, but realistically I feel this is quite low for
.org.au. The work involved to try and get it versus the reward from it would
be almost negligible. (if possible as well). The AuDA is very strict on these
sort of things, and even if someone did without the right paper trail I
have a feeling it would be overwritten if the wrong party did it for that
 sole practice.
A .com is a completely different story of course,…lol. You see those go for
 silly sums sometimes! lol.
I know the cost is minimal, and I guess it's not like we had 4 or 5 to choose
 from,…lol :)) (or had been purchased,…lol).

Again, Pete this is not to meant to seem like an attack on you or anything
like that,.. I just really wanted to partially clarify that information for
interests sake. (if people were looking at domains later, it's not too
 scary). ;o))

I, like others have mentioned, are a bit concerned at the AUWA acronym, as I
feel it could be associated to do with UWA. That's why my first thought is
when I see it, as others have mentioned to me as well. So we could get
ourselves into some hot water with UWA as well. Hey, I could be wrong,..but
that's my first thought with it as well. The same, as Ronni mentioned, with
using Apple in the name. More so now that Apple are really pushing into
everything themselves with the Apple branded stores, and everything
associated with it. We certainly wouldn't want to get in trouble with them,
or assumed that we're something to do with Apple direct. That's a whole lot
of hot water to get into,…lol.
So, I could see, like Vlad mentioned (which Shane bought up), if it was to be
changed (at all) to be WA Apple Users Group. (WAAU or WAAUG - however you'd'
pronounce them) it's less in your face Apple.
Either way, whichever is used, WAMUG, AUWA, WAAU, WAAUG etc etc et), you'll
always need to explain it. I think that goes without saying. Even if
advertising WA Macintosh User Group, Apple Users WA, WA Apple Users, WA Apple
Users Group,..etc etc it can be seen as long,..or shorted to the acronym,
which will still need to be explained. So either way, I don't think that's an
issue (not a major one anyway I feel. Besides, any type of explanation for
it gets the person involved in the discussion. Hook, line and sinker? (lol,
 and I don't even fish!),..hehe).

There were a couple of other points I had, but I think I've rambled enough……

I'd just like to finish again by saying, I apologise if anything is taken
the wrong way. It's not meant to be, and hopefully those who know me
understand I'm trying to portray all this. The last thing

Re: Proposed name change to Apple Users WA

2012-09-12 Thread Pete Smith
Hi Ronni and all other WAMUGGERS.

I'd just like to address two points from a personal perspective to put your
minds at ease.

1. Domain name. Knowing that the name change would invoke healthy public
debate on a public forum and also knowing that there are people out there (not
WAMUGGERS!!) who snap up possible domain names to hold out for 'ransom', so to
speak, a couple of domain names were snapped up by WAMUG first.

If the end result is that the membership vote to change the name, we already
have the domain secured. If the end result is that membership vote to retain
WAMUG, then the domain names will simply expire and not be renewed. It was just
a precautionary thing.

Personally - please consider the change and vote for what you want.

2. Constitution. I don't know where the 28 days has come from. Our
constitution reads:

5.3 Notice of General Meetings
At least twenty one days notice of every Annual General Meeting or fourteen
days for every Special General Meeting shall be given to Members specifying the
place, the date and the hour of the Meeting and the general nature of any
special business, but the non-receipt of such notice by any Member shall not
invalidate the proceedings at any General Meeting.

The Associations Incorporation Act 1987 allows us to set the time period as we
see fit as long it is actually in the Rules (Constitution) which it is. Other
bodies may have 28 days but we don't. As you see, it is 21 days for the AGM and
only 14 days for a Special General meeting.

Pete Smith

OOPS ... I forgot another point I did hint at it my first post to the list.

In the post from the Committee it was mentioned having to explain the WAMUG
name. Isn't this sort of doing the right thing, as it's getting them
 enquiring about it.
Once you've got them asking what it is, you then explain what WAMUG is, what
it does (covering all Apple products) etc etc.

You have then got them intrigued enough to enquire about it, so you've
got them,... then you can sell them on the idea to come and see, come to a
meeting or join the Mailing List.

Well that's it from me, all done, nothing more to say.

 Hi WAMUGers,

Well, I have said Hi WAMUGers another time ;-)

I've been giving some more thought to this and watching the list and
comments and pondering the following, which I haven't seen answered as yet,
so will re-post for interest sake, some of the queries raised so far, as
well as some points of interest I have.

First off, I'm assuming that appleuserswa.org.au would be the new website
address. After doing a search of registered Domain Names, I noticed it was
registered already, which I then discovered was by WAMUG. Just curious why
this was registered when it has not been agreed on as yet?

Secondly, Merv mentioned the other day that the Special Meeting requires a
28 day notice, so may not fall in time for the 2nd October. I'm assuming
this would then need to be the November meeting to keep in line with the
 constitution.

The Committee mention a marketing push in the original post. Has a marketing
push been tried currently with WAMUG as it stands to date?
Couldn't this be tried as another (much easier) way to try and recruit more
members. Surely just advertising WAMUG - come along to learn all about and
gain extensive knowledge and help for all things Apple - iPhone, iPad,
AppleTV. New members welcome to the monthly meetings. Or something along
 that theme?

Any marketing material would still just refer to the whole range of Apple
products and services that you're trying to target. And those older, longer
(or lost) members who still remember WAMUG, it may be enough of a Refresh
to dig them out of the woodwork.
As mentioned in my first email, I still get a lot of people that email me
privately about how great a service is given by WAMUG.

Which also brings out the question of costing? Has a budget or costing been
looked at for all this as yet? Or is that to follow the name change? I know
you have to spend money to make money as the saying goes, but we (as WAMUG
as a whole) obviously still need to cover the running costs of the group I
would imagine without blowing out the budget.
Surely if we could try a marketing push without the added expensive of all
these changes first, would show if it's going to work or not?

Another point that has been worrying me is... How does Apple itself feel
about this, given that it wasn't that long ago (3-4 years I think) that they
took back AppleCentre names from the Resellers. Are we (as WAMUG) allowed
now to use Apple Users? Or is that something they would take back down the
 track as well?

As everyone knows I am all for WAMUG, I believe in WAMUG's principles and
work and I try to do the very best I possibly can

G'day all WAMUGGERS

If you haven't set your iCal up for the meeting this coming Tuesday, 7 August
2012, then you best do so or stick a note on the fridge. Talking of which, I
wonder how long it will be before someone comes out with a fridge door with an
inbuilt electronic note pad on it (in it?)?

Anyway, I digress. Make yourself a reminder because this is the only reminder
I'm sending out this month. Why? I hear you ask. Well, I'll be in Rottnest,
feet up, rugged up, book in hand (a proper paper type book I can turn the pages

Enjoy the meeting.

Re: Date Format in Word 11

Hi Severin.

I don't have Word 11, only Word 8 but I was wondering if setting the language

They might think we're the 51st State but they sure as heck know their cousins

Just a thought.

When you insert a date and a time into your document, and you try to set a

 under Available Formats.

To work around this problem, use an AutoText entry and assign the formatted
date setting to a keystroke combination.
To do this, follow these steps:
 1. On the Insert menu, click Date And Time.
 2. Under Available Formats, select the format that you want, click to
select the Update Automatically check box, and then click OK.
 3. Select the resulting field, point to AutoText on the Insert menu, and
 then click New.
 4. Give the entry a name, and then click OK.
 5. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click Shortcut.
 6. Under Categories, select AutoText. Under AutoText, select the name that
you called your date AutoText entry.
 7. Put the insertion point in the Press New Shortcut Key input box, type in
a keystroke combination, and then click Assign.
 8. Click OK.

To set a default date and time for only the current session of Word for Mac,
 follow these steps:

 2. Under Available Formats, select a format.
 3. Click Default, and then click OK.

Fortunately, you can set Mail to have a minimum that it will use for HTML

 1. Quit Mail
 2. Open Terminal.app
 3. Copy Paste in the following command:

Note that you can use any size you like, it does not have to be 16. For eyes

If you don't like it, run the command again with a different number.

installing Apples latest security update 2012-001. Some users are having

Re: Search Box tip

2012-01-30 Thread Pete Smith
G'day Neil.

Thanks for that tip. You weren't alone. I didn't know that trick and, like you,
I organise into many and various folders, sub-folders, etc. Just followed your
help and hey presto, there it was. Like your good self, I'm still happily using
Snow Leopard.

Now I just have to remember the names of the folders

I am on Snow Leopard myself so, yes, it is a Snow Leopard feature:

Pick a file you have open and save as in the save as dialogue box that
opens there is a search box (with the magnifying glass icon in it) in the
top right corner - start typing in this box and it becomes a spotlight type
search (that is matched items are shown as you type) when you see the folder
 you want:

If you select the folder you can see its path - very useful if you have more
than one folder with the name - eg if you file things by the year you may
have several folders called, say, 2009/10 but filed in different spots and
 holding different content

When you have identified the correct folder you can double-click that folder
and you are back in the normal save as dialogue box but now in the folder
you want - so just hit save.

 Works for me ;o)

Being a Mac user from way before spotlight searches were introduced, I got
into the habit of sorting all my documents into folders, then the folders
into folders, and so on. Over the years that leads to several levels of
nested folders - I know some of you will identify with this obsessive need
 for order ;o)

This works very well for me (and spotlight is always there if I forget where
I filed something). It can however be a minor annoyance when using, for
example, the save as dialogue and having to navigate through the various
folders/levels to get to the appropriate folder to file a new document. I
tend to put the folders where I am always working into the finder sidebar -
so it is easy to go straight to them - it is the other folders, several
layers down, which take a few clicks to get there.

Then, today, I noticed that the save as dialogue box also incorporates the
search window - so I just put in the name of the folder I wanted to get to
and took the save process straight there - sweet!

As I say, pretty obvious when you think about it - but it took me a while
to think of it - so it may just help someone else ;o)

Strange Files On Macintosh HD - Solved [Q from meeting]

2011-11-01 Thread Pete Smith
G'day all.

I asked a question at the meeting this evening which stumped the experts. So
when I got home I tried google followed by an experiment and this is what
transpired.

First off, I located some odd document files on my Macintosh HD. The names
consisted of a combination of '%' letters and numbers. For example the shortest
file name was %A5 whilst the longest was
g%E4%B9%E4%C7%E4%C8%E4%CA%E4%C8%E4X%E4%E4%E4%E3?%E33%E33%E3?%E3%D7%E3M%E4%EB%E4%F7%E43%E5%D4%E5%A8%E5L%E5L%E5L%E5%91%E4d%E5%BE%E5%F5%E5%F5%E5f%E6%E6!%E6%E0%E5%E0%E5%D0%E5%C8%E5%B4%E5%8D%E5y%E5F%E5F%E5F%E5F%E5a%E5e%E5a%E5e%E5.

When opening using TextEdit, there was a whole series of various operations
that appeared to have been logged. They all appeared to be repeats of this:

kernel size = 5 (range 3..15)
volume thresh= 5.
t1   =15
gray step= 256.00
gray diff thresh = 3840.
resolution   =   200
scale=   100
effective res= 200

Tdustnscratch: level = 2
Tdustnscratch: start time: Mon Sep 19 19:52:48 2011
Tdustnscratch: begin detect: Mon Sep 19 19:52:48 2011
Tdustnscratch:begin applyMedianFilter: Mon Sep 19 19:52:48 2011
Tdustnscratch: end detect: Mon Sep 19 19:52:48 2011
Tdustnscratch: begin reconstruct: Mon Sep 19 19:52:48 2011

Only the dates were different.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I found information in Apple Support
Communities whereby it appears to be related to my HP all-in-one
scanner/printer. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2337802?start=0tstart=0

So I did a little experiment. I trashed the files and then scanned a couple of
book covers for my Bento library as I usually do. Lo and behold, a new file
named %FF%FF%8B, appeared on the Macintosh HD.

The only 'problem' left is that the file was created 20 minutes ago but, even
though I have shut down HP Scan and turned the scanner off, the file still
says Fetching... in the Last Opened area of the preview (I'm using columns in
Finder) and TextEdit won't open it. I've replaced all the trashed files but
that didn't help so I've trashed 'em all again and the new file is still
fetching... - 25 minutes now.

So I've trashed it too and now it's no longer fetching!!

I am no longer worried about the files.

So that's me happy now and off to bed.

Cheers all,

Pete Smith

Re: iPad 2 mirroring

2011-06-29 Thread Pete Smith
Hi David.

I haven't connected via DVI but, if you're interested; I took my iPad 2 to work
and connected it up, via the VGA adapter, directly to our ACER projector in the
training room. It worked fine. I just played around with it and my screen
showed up nicely on the wall. It was actually better than any of the laptops
we've used!

I had a couple of TV shows I had converted in Eye TV to iTunes and played one
of them. It looked good on the wall and the sound from the iPad (no external
speakers) was surprisingly good. Admittedly, I was seated next to it. The only
thing with the video was that it only played on the wall and the iPad screen
was blank. It does tell you it's going to do that so it's not a problem.

Interestingly, we've just upgraded our computers at work and our brand new
laptop (Windows - yuk!) wouldn't work on the Acer. Had to get a techie out to
physically work out what's what. Turned out the Acer, which is a few years old,
has limited resolutions so it wasn't picking up the laptop too well. However,
the iPad is one of the resolutions it recognises so it just worked.

I've been through my box of cables that I rescued from the skip at work but
can't see a DVI cable. I'll have a look around at work but unless they came
with our new computer rollout I don't think we have any. If I do find one, I'll
try it out and report back. Don't hold your breath though.

Hope this helps.

Pete Smith

Daily digest - update ( HTML)

2011-06-01 Thread Pete Smith

With reference to the daily digest not being available I have found out the
following:

Our web host Web In A Box has physically moved from their old location to a
new location.

The WAMUG mail system is running on Kerio Mail Server. The domain is running
under a virtual server at the new location and the whole shebang comes under
the auspices of our web host. Unfortunately, they don't currently run Kerio as
part of their regular service.

If I understand correctly, whilst the physical move has been completed, the
software migration hasn't happened yet (or at least hasn't been completed).

However, once Web In A Box has Kerio up and running, the digest should come
back online and also the list will revert to plain text again and attachments
will not come through.

Sorry I can't give a time line. I believe they've hit a couple of hurdles along
the way.

Regards,

Pete Smith

G'day all WAMUGGERS

Have you set your iCal for the April monthly meeting yet? Well you should - and
don't forget the new start time of 7.00 pm

This meeting will be a meeting of special significance because we are proud to
be able to present Ronni with an Honorary Life Membership Award.

At the recent AGM, the Committee put to the meeting that Ronni (Ronda Brown) be
awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the WAMUG in “recognition of her

Re: Membership

2011-03-25 Thread Pete Smith

Hi Laura.

Without letting too much of the cat out of the bag, I have tried to answer your
questions as below.

It is planned to let the whole cat out just after the next monthly meeting!
(Bet that intrigues a few people!!) Oh, and it's got nothing to do with 'Lion',
just that common saying.

Regards,

Pete Smith

On 25/03/2011, at 11:26 AM, Laura Webb wrote:

 Good morning all

Could someone please clarify questions about membership.

From my reading of information on the WAMUG web page, the List is free to
all, but those wishing to attend monthly meetings, should pay a membership
of $30 per year. I presume such membership also gives a right to vote as and
when necessary. I have also understood that membership is due per calendar
year and generally payable around the time of the AGM.

1. You are right in that membership does give the right to vote when
necessary.
Unfortunately, the constitution puts the subscription year 12 months from
each member's initial joining. We are hoping to have that changed very soon.

By implication are all those attending monthly meetings presumed to be
 financial members?

2. Non-financial members are not actually banned from the meetings. We
encourage prospective members to come along and have a look before they join.
(I did for a couple of meetings which is why I joined.)

We are also looking at ways of being able to introduce some 'members only
extras' that would add value to being a member and, hopefully, encourage others
to join. Not just at meetings but on the website too.

We regularly see reminders about forthcoming meetings. Why do we never see a
reminder that membership is due? Could this not be included with the reminder
 about the AGM?

3. Hopefully, point 1 will fix this up and then annual reminders will
definitely be posted.

Unable to attend the AGM, I posted a cheque on 3rd March for $30 to the
following address as shown on the web page:-

WAMUG Treasurer, PO Box 514, WEMBLEY 6913.

4. I have received the new address today and the website was actually updated
about an hour ago.
 http://www.wamug.org.au/join/

My cheque has just been returned, the envelope endorsed opened in error. It
is good to know that someone was kind enough to return it.

I note that it is now possible to pay by bank transfer, an option that I
don't remember being available last year. I shall now use that method but do
feel concerned that an incorrect address is being shown on the web page.

5. The electronic option is indeed a recent addition to the Join page and you
may have also noticed that we no longer use PayPal/PayMate. From memory, it
occurred at the end of January this year.

I wont say any more until after the April meeting. All the info will be on the
website and there will also be a posting about it on the List. There are still
a few tweaks to be done on the 'cat' but they'll be done by then.

 Regards
 Laura

Re: reverting to older version of iPhone app (was Bento 4)

2011-03-20 Thread Pete Smith

Thanks Carlo.

I decided to revert and followed your instructions with no problems except step
3.

I deleted both apps from iTunes and the iPhone, confirming both deletes. When I
started step 3 to sync the iPhone minus Bento, up popped a message box saying
that the iPhone had downloaded items that were no longer on iTunes and did I
want to bring them across? I can't remember exactly what it said; sorry; but
that was the gist of it. As I knew I hadn't downloaded any thing I rejected it.

I cancelled the sync using the slider on the iPhone, waited what seemed like
ages whilst iTunes still indicated it was backing up my iPhone. When it finally
said it was safe to disconnect I then dragged the old app from finder into the
iTunes Library and re-synced the iPhone.

I then opened Bento on both devices and had to set up from anew again and sync
which took about 37mins but now all is well and my latest book additions are on
my iPhone so I wont double up.

As an afterthought - I have just realised that I had, in fact, updated some
data on an app (bus timetables) via 3G on Friday so maybe that was what the
message was about? But that doesn't make sense as I hadn't synced since then
anyway. I've just done another sync and the message didn't come up but the data
is still on the iPhone anyway. I also checked and compared the app size and
worked out the content of the Bento app when I synced was 1.45GB!

Many thanks again Carlo.

(PS - I'm already missing the look of the new Bento app. Must upgrade to Bento
4 soon.)

 Hi Pete,

Well done in preserving the file! If the update to the iPhone app was free,
you have a painless way to revert to the older version that you just
recovered from Trash. It is easy enough so I will detail it here to give you
the option. The file you recovered should have a .ipa extension, that
 presumably stands for iPhone app.

 1) Delete the app from your iTunes library -- in iTunes select Apps in the
left hand selector panel, find the icon of the app in question in the right
hand detail panel, right click or Ctrl-click the icon and select Delete. In
the successive pop-ups select Remove and then Move to Trash.

 2) Delete the app from your iPhone -- press and hold the App icon until it
jiggles, then select the X at the top left of the icon and confirm the delete.

 3) You can sync your iPhone now to save any version confusion (I am not sure
 if this step is necessary)

 4) Drag the .ipa file of your old version to the Library pane at the top left
 of iTunes.

 5) Sync your iPhone again to install the old version to the phone.

And that's it. You can then at some future time upgrade again to the newer
version of the App, but until you want to do that, avoid selecting the app
for upgrade in the app store.

 Cheers,
 Carlo

I still had the app in the trash and have moved it to another folder on the
mac for storage just in case. As I can still use both the iMac version and
the iPhone app (just not sync) I will put up with the inconvenience for a
little while. Either I'll update to Bento 4 before; or the other app update
will come out and hopefully fix it.

I dare say I'll stop my little personal protest soon and buy the update.
I've been hanging out for it.

Re: Safe to Upgrade ? IOS 4.3

2011-03-19 Thread Pete Smith
G'day Blitto

I upgraded my 3G iPhone with no problems. Even tried my hotspot by turning off
my modem and connected my iMac to the iPhone via Bluetooth. To be honest, I'm
not sure what happened. I did a test email and it kept coming up saying I
wasn't connected yet the iPhone iMac said they were connected! When I finally
gave up and disconnected, the email went off!! I've got no idea what happened.
I was just testing/playing to see if it work.

My iPhone, however, has given me no problems since upgrading. My only problem
is with the Bento app which I downloaded but that has absolutely nothing to do
with 4.3.

Hope this helps.

Pete Smith

Re: Bento 4

2011-03-18 Thread Pete Smith
Thanks Carlo.

I still had the app in the trash and have moved it to another folder on the mac
for storage just in case. As I can still use both the iMac version and the
iPhone app (just not sync) I will put up with the inconvenience for a little
while. Either I'll update to Bento 4 before; or the other app update will come
out and hopefully fix it.

I dare say I'll stop my little personal protest soon and buy the update. I've
been hanging out for it.

Pete Smith

 Hi Pete,

There are still two (long shot) possible ways that you can revert to the
older version of the Bento app.

 1) When you update any app you will find the old version in the Trash Can. If
you have not yet emptied the trash you can revert from this copy.

 2) If like some other MUGgers you have more than one portable device — say an
iPhone and an iPad — and have not yet updated the app on both you can revert
to the older version from the not yet updated device.

If either of the above apply, let me know and I will send detailed
 instructions.

Protective Plastic Case for 3.5 SATA HDD

2011-02-16 Thread Pete Smith

G'day all.

This may interest any of you who have invested or are going to invest in bare
external hard disks for use in devices such as the Voyager Q.

I have had three on the go plus some more I've just bought ($63 for 1TB from
Austin computers online) and have just been storing them in the original
packaging. This was not the best solution I felt so I did a bit of interwebby
research and eventually came across the following:

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/protective-plastic-case-for-3-5-sata-hdd-translucent-25631

I ordered some and they turned up yesterday. My verdict? Brilliant!

The drives fit firmly and snuggly in the cases and the top is easy to open and
shut. The drives don't just 'fall' in or out but need to be deliberately pushed
in and pulled out but it can be done with two fingers grasping each side
easily. Now my drives can be stored upright like books and the cases can be
easily labelled. You can also store them laying down if you want, or on the
side if you choose.

The cases are from the USA and cost $US 3.62 ($AUD3.61 today) but get a bit
cheaper if you order more. I ordered 15, not only for myself, and each case
worked out at $AUD 2.99 each delivered to my front door.

For those interested, I ordered them on 20 January 2011, they shipped on 27
January and were delivered yesterday, 16 February.

Hope this helps someone.

Regards,

Pete Smith

Re: Waxing Lyrical

2011-02-09 Thread Pete Smith
G'day Mike.

I think it's disappeared!

I also downloaded it and have been using it to get my lyrics. I have just
checked the App Store and it's not there. Also, interestingly, it not longer
shows up in my 'Purchases' on the store.

I tried looking through the apps and typing Lyrica and Lyr in the search
panel. All to no avail. It looks like it has been removed but I have no idea
why.

Re: Waxing Lyrical

2011-02-09 Thread Pete Smith
That's intriguing Neil.

I got my copy by the clicking on the APP icon in the dock. Presumably that
took me to the Australian store. (I got it on 1 Feb straight after the meeting)
I know of others who got it even later. I wonder why they took it off the
Aussie store?

Oh well, it's working and I'm happy with it. Mind you, I've picked up some
doozie lyrics. The Addams Family came back with completely different and
irrelevant lyrics, a couple have come back with what look like web addresses
and one came back with disgusting lyrics that I've never even heard of before
and definitely were not for the song playing!! However, they came back
lightningly fast. Overall, though, I'm quite happy with it. Especially as you
can get a report of the songs it got lyrics for and those it didn't and save it
as text file (only when hunting playlists).

Put in “Lyrica app” and it gives about 116 million hits – of which almost all

Maybe even easier than sending the question to WAMUG ;o)

However, the reason you can’t find it on the App store is probably because it
is only currently available on the US app store – when you mouse over the
“Available on the App Store” link on the developers website it says
 “Available on the US App Store” and takes you here;

 http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=333259751mt=8ign-mpt=uo%3D6

Trying to view it in iTunes tells you “The item you’ve requested is not

So, at the minute, you would need to sign in with a US itunes account to
 download it.

Re: info

2011-01-29 Thread Pete Smith
G'day Malcolm.

I'm not aware of any specific legislation that covers your query. I think the
bolded info is just a disclaimer.

The following may assist from Connecting Up Australia (I have no knowledge of
the organisation, I just googled):

**
What Are Email Disclaimers?

Email disclaimers are statements that are added to emails to disclaim
liability. The statements are usually of a legal character, but can also be
used for marketing purposes.

There are three main reasons why you might decide to add disclaimers to your
emails: legal protection, regulatory compliance and marketing purposes.

Legal Protection

If you were to be so unlucky to be sued for the contents of an email, it is not
certain whether an email disclaimer will protect you from liability in a court
of law. However, it can help your case and, in some situations, might exempt
you from liability. More importantly, it may well prevent the actual occurrence
of lawsuits against your organization, since the mere presence of the statement
might deter most persons from seeking legal compensation from your
organization. Besides avoiding liability, disclaimers are also used to prevent
persons from unlawfully forwarding or copying confidential emails. Again, the
presence of the notice will deter most persons from doing this. Therefore, the
use of disclaimers is always recommended.

Disclaimers can help protect against six types of legal threats:

.
Transmission of viruses.

If an employee sends or forwards an email that contains a virus, your
organization can be sued for this. Apart from implementing a good virus checker
that blocks viruses entering and leaving the organization via email, you can
also warn in your disclaimer that the email could possibly contain viruses and
that the receiver is responsible for checking and deleting viruses.

From their About Us Page:

Connecting Up Australia is a nonprofit organisation that works to strengthen
the nonprofit and community sector in Australia by providing a variety of
information, products, resources and programs. Our services are available to
approximately 600,000 organisations across the nation. We also help to develop
relationships with business, community and government sectors for capacity
development.

The info came from
http://www.connectingup.org/ict-recourses/internet-and-web/email-disclaimers-to-protect-your-organization
**

I would think that if a company was taking all precautions but a virus still
got through and harmed someone else via email, it may be difficult to prosecute
them. However, if they took no precautions then it may be easier. At the end of
the day, the receiver still has some responsibility, I feel. It would be
interesting to know if there is any actual statute law in relation to it but
I'd bet a penny to a pound that there isn't.

Regards,

Pete Smith
