I hate to disappoint you Americans but Tim Hortons is terrible. The only
thing it has going for it is its huge number of locations. The coffee is
worse than McDonalds (yes, really, since McD in Canada buys from a roaster
that used to supply Starbucks).

About 10-15 years ago Tim Hortons sold itself to some corporate buyout
group to proceeded to stop the practice of baking fresh donuts, muffins etc
in each location. Instead they now receive cardboad boxes full of sad,
small, crusty, stale frozen donuts that go in an industrial microwave oven
every morning. All this in the name of profit, and because normal people
still want to pay $1 a donut, not the $2 it would probably cost if they
really baked them in house.

A root beer has changed in the last quite few years. It keeps getting
more 'soda-ey' insted of 'brew-ey'.

But now, you're talking about something which is definitely better in
Canada A food is 100% better north of the border. See the menu at
www.aw.ca

And let's not even start talking about chocolate. Definitely better north
of the border.

Thankfully they're only available north of the border.

A Wired Phone Question:
I use mostly Linksys / Cisco wired with good results (good sound quality,
good handsets). How does Polycom compare to the standard Cisco units?

Re: [AFMUG] Redundancy at core router

2016-01-25 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
If you are doing BGP, you can setup two routers, each doing bgp to one of the
upstreams, and ibgp between the two.

This make a lot of sense, from redundancy as well as the ability to do
maintenance, without causing an outage.

Whether or not it's possible, I don't know... but it definitely seems like
overkill to me. I would just do one upstream per router and iBGP between
them.

All up to the upstream, I have seen some, some will allocate one port, then
give you a /29 so you can split it.

I currently have 2 upstream's and only 1 router, planning to add a second
router for redundancy, is it over kill (or even possible?) to get each upstream
to allocate 2 ports on their router so that each of my routers will have 2
upsteams or is it more than sufficient to just do 1 upstream per router? It's
extremely unlikely to have 1 upstream and one router fail at the same time, I
think.

Does that make since?

Re: [AFMUG] Redundancy at core router

2016-01-25 Thread Josh Baird
The most common scenario is one upstream per router. Run eBGP with your
providers, and iBGP between your two edge routers.

All of the above. This particular tower has 12 AP's installed. It's
physically overloaded and shares spectrum with two other towers in the

We have several 1x and 2x subs on each AP that need to be
improved/removed. According to the capacity planner this may be our
best bet in providing some breathing room.

Wouldn't you have to change all your APs to 5 ms frame?

Really, gotta fix those 1X and 2X subs.

Re: [AFMUG] 5ms frame on 450

2016-01-25 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Ken,

Correct, we would have to make a network wide change to 5ms. That's a
bummer and hope to avoid. Our first call to action is to
correct/improve SM's with poor links and go from there. I'm
considering a move from 75% downlink to 85% downlink as well.

Is 5.1 & 5.2 available in the 450 platform? Last I heard it was
different hardware and not compatible with 5.4/5.7 450. Carrying all
new 5.1ghz SM's is a pain, but doable if we have to.

I believe it is 450i at AP and SM. So it would kind of make sense only to
move over some high bandwidth customers and offload the existing AP.

Really, gotta fix those 1X and 2X subs.

All of the above. This particular tower has 12 AP's installed. It's
physically overloaded and shares spectrum with two other towers in the
area.

We have several 1x and 2x subs on each AP that need to be
improved/removed. According to the capacity planner this may be our
best bet in providing some breathing room.

2016-01-25 Thread Chuck McCown
If the owner of the property agrees it is probably legal.
If the owner of the cabling is not a regulated public utility it is probably
legal.

If it has been wired by a public utility then you should have some rights to
use the wiring. Otherwise all bets are off.

Be best to negotiate with the owner of the MDU and run your own wiring if
possible.

I recently did an install replacing an old Toshiba PBX and used Grandstream

of zero touch config. Not sure if you are configuring the phones via TFTP or
manually.

For this customer we did put in one of the Grandstream DECT phones (DP715) and
it worked fine. Haven’t tried adding more DECT handsets to the base yet, but
is supposed to work.

Fiber and cat5/6 Ethernet is still kind of a grey area that hasn't been

That’s what we are doing, too.

We did an additional thing behind the 2 bgp uplink routers: We add another 2
routers

which are connected to both BGP-Routers.

This allows us to leave the BGP-Routers alone. They do no MPLS, no filtering, …

No one logs into them.

The 2 routers behind only do OSPF so their routingtable is readable.

This paranoia comes from times where Mikrotik had some OSPF bugs. It is no fun

doing firmwaregames with BGP-Routers. We sail very smooth with this construct.

I had the same question. I'm considering changing an AP from 2.5ms to
5ms. I'm aware of the doubled latency, but I'm more interested in the
additional 7mb/s downlink (according to 450 capacity planner).

We have an AP with ~50 subs and it reaches 100% downlink every
evening. I'm considering changing downlink from 75% to 85% and moving
to 5ms frames. By doing so, we should increase capacity by 9 to 11mb/s
on the downlink.

If it was me, I'd just deploy another AP instead of trying to tweak the

Re: [AFMUG] Can a provider have exclusive rights to MDU access cabling?

2016-01-25 Thread Ken Hohhof
I found several law firms with articles like this excerpt:

“Notwithstanding the FCC’s Exclusivity Order, MDU owners and service providers
are still able to negotiate what are in effect de facto exclusive ROE
agreements by several means. Common methods of conferring monopoly status on a
selected provider include granting exclusive on-site marketing rights and/or
exclusive use of existing cable inside wiring owned by the property owner (or
HOA).
Because access to private property (including access to common areas for
on-site marketing purposes and access to wiring) is a valuable right, service
providers often pay financial compensation to the property owner in exchange
for access. Provider to owner compensation is typically paid in the form of an
upfront “door fee,” based on the number of residential units at the property,
and/or monthly or quarterly percentages of the provider’s recurring
subscription revenue received from property residents.”

Sounds like building owner is likely getting money from the other guys.

I would just talk to the building owner.

They usually have final say on what goes on in their building, including wiring.

If they have some special agreement or something with another
provider/contractor, then it’s up to them to disclose that.

A local provider wired a whole business MDU. We are trying to light up a
customer on the premises. They are charging ridiculous fees to access the
cabling. Is this legal?

Why not just have it live TV - call or text your vote.
Perhaps some random lottery winnings to every 10,000th voter.
Drew Cary can host it. Have some singing and dancing.

I've been very happy with the Grandstream phones 2140 and 2160. I
really like that the 2160 has the sidecar built in, no need to add
anything extra. Only have had 1 failure so far. Phone had the display
go out. RMA'd without an issue. While finding a hefty piece of wood to
knock on, I haven't had any stability issues with the 6104. Started
deploying them about a year and a half ago. Price is definitely good too.

For this customer we did put in one of the Grandstream DECT phones (DP715)

What is it they like about the Panasonic phones?

Anyone used the Panasonic sip phones? I have a business office that doesnt
like the UBNT products due to the feel of the handset etc. They also want a
DECT wireless option.

Personally I am OK with AASTRA but in this situation I am trying to make
front office folks happy. We will be turning down their old panasonic key
system soon and I want to try to approximate the type of handset they have
been using. Could just swap handsets but they dont work and they dont fit
the switchhook of the sip phones.

If it has been wired by a public utility then you should have some

Be best to negotiate with the owner of the MDU and run your own wiring
