Ok, the z machines started from zork. that used a .dat extention. then we had z3, z5 z6 and z8. Of those z5 and z8 are commenplace. Glulx or inform7 uses blb blorb zblorb and ulx. Depending on the things the latest inform 7 versions have graphics and sounds I forget the rest of that though.
