unbelievable, and now I am stuck here.I got mugged at gun point on my way to the
hotel and my money, credit cards, phone and other valuables were stolen.I've
been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at
all, they asked us to wait for 3weeks but we can't wait till then.  Thank
God they did not take my passport.I urgently need your help.I just need 2000$
dollars USD to sort out my hotel bills but i'll appreciate whatsoever you can
afford,I promise to pay you back once I get home. The hotel manager won't let us
leave until we settle the hotel bills.Am so freaked out at the moment.
I do have cash in my account, but I can't access it right now because I had
to cancel all my credit cards that were stolen!!I'm sending this from a free
internet connection at the public library.   I will forever be grateful if you
can help me.Please respond quickly, as my flight leaves in a few hours and I
need to pay my hotel bill. Please save me from the embarrassment of not being
able to cover the charges.
Thanks

They seem to go in cycles.

A friend of mine sent me a similar one that she had gotten from a
former pastors wife who left under less than honorable conditions,
and she forwarded it to the Sheriff. She was that suspicious.

Oh this was an email from someone she knew for about 10 years. She
left when her husband took a call in another locality last Summer.

She was not about to send her money and thought it was the real
person who she has tangled with before because of financial problems.

The one sent to this list was unusual as it sent it to an email list,
not an individual.

If I understand it correctly, this is done by someone or something
that hacks yahoo accounts and then uses their address books within
Yahoo to send out these missives.

I got two last year. One from a member of this or another similar
list and then one from a church list I manage. These were
individuals who I have known and have communicated with.

The first one I was sorry for their problem but was not about to send
money. The second one i had just seen an email from on the list a
day or two before and they had not mentioned traveling. (and this
person does a bit of it.) So I was suspicious right off. He then
wrote me as manager of the list that his Yahoo account had problems.

When my friend forwarded this one to me, I knew right off that it was a scam.

One of these Stranded Traveller messages got posted to another
computer email list I subscribe to, last year. The message was
specifically written to appeal to the kind of person on the email
list (women, in IT, many of them young.) At the time, I pointed out
that the lack of specific information made the Stranded Traveller's
appeal VERY suspicious, and suggested that if anyone on the list
really wanted to help the Stranded Traveller, they should offer
advice to her (such as, contact the U.S. consulate or embassy).

AFAIK, no one sent money. I think they would have sent funds, if
the appeal had been genuine; because people really do feel obliged to
help when someone is in trouble. Helpfulness is just as much a part
of human nature as the impulse to defraud.

to keep pressing the off button for while for it stay quiet. Waited for a few

Beeps indicate a hardware problem.

Google your motherboard manual and the beep codes so you can interpret
them.

Or call the manufacturer for support.

Thank you... This is what I did: first changed the electrical outlet to make
sure the computer was receiving proper current. Nothing changed. Then I opened
the computer to see if any fans had stopped working, especially the CPU. They
were working. Then I went to the memory slots and pushed the memories down
again to their places... Guess what? Started working again. This is what I
called strike of luck...on a Sunday evening when tomorrow I will need the
computer where I have all my appointments, etc...

Going to sleep...

There is a utility for copying off your drivers. I find that all too
often rebuilding Windows from scratch becomes a nightmare because you
can't find all the necessary drivers or the current drivers don't work
right with your hardware. Copy them to a USB drive and then virus scan
the heck out of it before you use them.

I can't remember the name of the utility. Anyone?

Yup defender is almost useless.

Any Anti Virus may not get to Malware and other things that have
hidden themselves deep within the OS.

Avast used to have a feature that said Do you Want to Do a Scan on Boot Up

This is the only way tog et rid of deep down infections such as Tom
said by running a Boot Disk/CD with a Virus program Scanning your system.

Catches a lot of crap we don't know is there.

2010-03-02 Thread Ranbo
*Brian,

Thanks much for the advice. Before I do reformat and reload my operating
system as you suggest, want to be sure I have to go through this. For past
3 days, computer suddenly seems to be working normally, except maybe that I
couldn't launch a new anti-malware program (run error) suggested here.
Otherwise, things seem to be okay.

AVG does report that on 2/26 and 2/27 Trojan horse Generic 16BZFO was found
and also the virus vault contains 2 or 3 warnings around that time that a
registry key with reference to an infected file was found. There was one
other reported infection from a scan back in mid December. Since Feb 27 the
daily automatic scans and 2 I did manually report no infections. Does this
mean that AVG has found and contained the virus? On 2/26 and 2/27 AVG scan
was interrupted before completed and there is a note that the log was
corrupted one of those days and an earlier day. The scans since then have
been completed according to the log BTW, is it important to delete the
viruses in the AVG virus vault?

Finally, what are the most likely ways to get this sort of virus, if that's
what it is? I do have a back up drive.

Thanks

If you have a Dell, HP, or Compaq, you must hold down an F-key (see
owners manual) while booting to discover the hidden partition with your
 operating system restore files.
Older computers will have a disc that came in the box that has the OpSys
 restore on it.
For a few years, computers were delivered without a restore disc, and
asked you to make your own (which very few people actually did). For this
reason, you can contact the manufacturer and get a restore disc for anywhere
from free to $30, depending on the company. There are a few off-brands that
don't have a support site, but you can go to special merchants that collect
restore disc's and will sell you a set for about $30.
Of course, the easiest solution is to drop you machine at a local computer
store /repair shop and let them do it.. costs around $100 to $150.

 Hope this helps!

If you give the brand name and model, maybe we can help you find the
 key-sequence or source disc.

 Good Luck!

Thanks much for the advice. Before I do reformat and reload my operating

Otherwise, things seem to be okay.

I would do it just for the peace of mind. You don't know that you
don't have a keystroke logger or some other thing running silently in
the background.

Try another anti-malware program. Try re-downloading (on a known good

(some) online scan(s).

But hey, that's just me.

Well Rambo, I saw this one on a customers computer last week. It's a
tenacious sucker, and yes, it seems to wait a bit before launching after
booting in the morning. It traps most operating system calls preventing
you from running diagnostic software or restoring your registry to an
earlier date. There is good news and bad news... the bad first. You
will need to reformat and reload your operating system. The good
news: this virus will block all attempts at removal, but it will not
interfere with your copying of your important files to a USB drive so:

Copy your important files to a backup drive,
Look in your owners manual for the sequence to restore your operating
system.
Go to Windows Update in the Accessories menu (repeatedly) to get your
opsys up-to-date.

Reload all your favorite programs and files.

If you have a Dell, HP, or Compaq, you must hold down an F-key (see

operating system restore files.

I have had to do complete Windows reinstalls on several friends' computers.

It does it by getting you to click what you think are clean sites.

Some sites get taken over by a Trojan very easily.

Then when you think you are telling them no thanks on a pop up it catches you.

They are very subtle and sneaky.

This is a extortion attempt usually wanting you to buy their program
to get rid of their Trojan.

Yes, this is one of the nastiest ones out there. They come by many names
and take a crowbar and blowtorch to remove. This is one of the reasons you
keep good backups. XP wasn't as easy, but now running 7 I can reinstall a
new OS in about 20 minutes...have most my programs I use installed in less
than an hour. I keep an external drive with all my cd images I might want
to install, I keep all my installers I've downloaded also on this drive
along with any serials I have to enter. My mail is in the cloud, no backup
needed...I keep my bookmarks synced with a firefox extension. I've refined
my install process to using a USB thumb drive also..much faster than dvd.
Yes it's a PITA to have to plan like this but like it or not this is
windows, plan accordingly and it's no big deal.

Yes, this is why I usually recommend formatting and installing the OS clean
once any compromise takes place. I mean, who wants that nagging feeling that
everything you type is being sent to east europeans?

Of course, as has already been pointed out, this presupposes that you have a
good backup strategy in place. But then if you don't, you're only screwing
yourself, it's only a matter of when.

The problem with reinstalling Windows is that you probably do not have
all the drivers you need and when you track down current versions of
the drivers you may find that they don't work all that well with your
older hardware. Even people who regularly back up their data do not
think to make backups of all their current drivers.

Note that you don't launch Bit Defender, you boot from the Bit
Defender CD. It will run Linux on your PC and then launch Bit Defender
from there. This will examine your hard drive using a system you can
trust is clean. Yours obviously is not.

Yeah, I kind of wondered how one ANY program could be installed on so badly
an infected system, (and I yes I did note that the website says nothing
about removing malware) but John Gilroy did say he used it for that, and
recommended it for that purpose. Maybe there was more to the story than he
had time for. If you were still on the show you coulda ast him. BTW, I miss

Someone already suggested you try the BitDefender Rescue CD. Have you? If
you can't download and burn that on your machine, maybe you can borrow

It is very possible you will need to download the programs you need,
on another computer, and run them in safe mode to clean it up.

The old Avast would be good as it asked if you wanted to do a boot

It's primitive because it is young and evolving technology. The cars
you drive that work so relatively dependently so almost anyone can use
one is a technology that has in development for over 100 years and even
now we are still discovering a terminal energy/ polution problem with cars.

Cars do far less than computers and innovation in that industry is almost
zilch. Given several years warning that lighter, more efficient autos are

People downloading pirated bit torrent movies can easily consume the
majority of the bandwidth wideband cable can provide.

Make a complaint to your cable company. They can monitor the situation
and if necessary control users exceeding their limits or alternatively
supply more bandwidth to your sector.

The bit about downloading pirated bit torrent movies and control users
exceeding their limits is the party line for the opponents of network
neutrality who want to put artificial caps and surcharges on your service

I know if I subscribe to legitimate sites or purchase an appliance
(Like the new ROKU for Netflix) that means I am only allowed to
download one movie a month or so?

I have seen where some are pegging different caps for different
levels of service.

I presently have a 5 mps service (on paper not in real life) and with
some services this would give me a 100 gb cap. Since I am a heavy
movie watcher that would limit me to 15 or less downloaded movies a
month, unless they are compressing the signal so it is not a full DVD.

This would be a good time to take some benchmarks so you have something
to compare to when you have problems.

Measure your upload/download speeds and save a record.

Run a tracert to your DNSs.

Use DiG to make a DNS query and note the response time.

Okay, how do you use DiG to make a DNS query?

If DNS numbers are assigned automatically, does that mean they can
frequently be changing? If so, what is true at one moment in time as
ascertained by a DNS query, may not hold the next day?

If other nearby users can affect your loading speed than this would be a
possibility. I live in an apartment complex and there are people moving in
and out pretty often. Additionally, probably were some visitors over the
holidays, when this seemed to begin or accelerate. I did hear a few new
voices the past few days and noted that my neighbor across the hall had some
children visiting.

Make a complaint to your cable company. They can monitor the situation

Re: [CGUYS] Help - very slow loading....again!

2008-11-29 Thread Fred Holmes
I haven't followed all of the symptoms carefully, but here on Cox Cable in
Annandale, VA, with 3 Mbs service I frequently get instances when nothing
accessing the Internet works, or else is very slow. I just attribute it to WAN
congestion, whether it be bots doing their thing or neighbors downloading a lot
of stuff simultaneously. I do blame it on Cox. I have a couple of older
computers attached to my router as well as my primary computer, and all are
affected, so it doesn't seem to be the configuration of my particular computer.
I don't really know the neighbors well enough to talk to them about their
experience.

My D-Link router has a feature to write to a log file all blocks (incoming
packets that are intentionally dropped because they are not in response to a
request from the computer they are directed to, i.e., Stateful Packet
Inspection) and then, when the log file is full (or periodically) e-mail that
log file to me. It's very interesting to watch the density of blocking
activity wax and wane. It gets very intense at times. Even more so on the
router at my son's house where my grandkids computers are attached.

I haven't had a slowdown in some days now, and the log files have been very
empty. Maybe the ostracization of that rogue ISP in California has shut a lot
of stuff down.

Automatic assignment of DNS usually means that you are assigned to use DNS
servers provided by your ISP, or ones that he has subscribed to (and is
directly or indirectly responsible for seeing that they aren't hacked or at
least has come to trust).

If you are using a router, set the individual computers to automatically detect
DNS service, and set the router to use the DNS you want. OpenDNS is a good one
to use. http://www.OpenDNS.com/ They apparently are making a serious effort
to defeat DNS hacking attempts. They also get some advertising revenue from
what you see when you type in an erroneous URL, either one that isn't assigned
or one that they believe belongs to the black hats.

Your ISP's tech support want you to use their DNS automatically so that they
can gather statistics on what URLs you visit instead of someone else gathering
those statistics.

Try running tracert from the command line. If any of the first few hops

worked previously.

Some people are complaining about the virus scanner that FF just added,
but since your IE works crappy too the problem is probably at the system
level.

I recently fixed such sluggishness by changing the DNS servers I was
using. I had been using OpenDNS -- as I and many others on the list have
recommended. But recently OpenDNS has been very sluggish. So I switched
to my ISP's DNS.

[CGUYS] Help - very slow loading....again!

2008-11-26 Thread Ranbo
I hate to sound ungrateful on Thanksgiving eve, but my computer is once
again taking forever to load every page. This, with FireFox, including with
creating a new profile.  Last time, creating a new profile seemed to help;
now it doesn't. Further, can't even seem to use IE as alternative which
worked previously. Trying IE just brings up message that there are
connection problems, then can't even do the diagnostic that pops up. Every
page is taking dial-up-type time to load, even though speed test shows I'm
getting about 4.7 MB download speed. Any idea why this is happening; why
this recurrently happens? More important, what I can do about this very
frustrating state of affairs? I will be very thankful and grateful if I can
once again go on the internet or use Gmail without waiting maybe 30 to 45
seconds for each page to load!

Happy Thanksgiving, either way

Have you tried using Windows Task Manager (Control, ALT, Delete), to
see what is using up the CPU? Your System Idle Process should be above
90% when you aren't doing anything. For more detailed info, you can
also use Process Explorer, but start with Task Manager if you don't
already have PE.

Re: [CGUYS] Help - very slow loading....again!

2008-11-26 Thread Ranbo
I deleted a few processes which seemed related to AVG (antivirus). CPU
usage did drop from between 0 and 100% to about 5 to 15% and loading speed
seems a little faster. Curious, once page loads the loading icon that spins
is still spinning, for a long, long time. Not sure what this means. Also,
hope I didn't just inactivate AVG antivirus entirely.

Why can't computers have more self-diagnostics built in? Is this asking too
much!? On Thanksgiving.

Try uninstalling AVG, turning on MS firewall, rebooting, and see if that
changes things.

That will tell you whether AVG is the source of the problem.

[CGUYS] help please -LaCie lightscribe burner problem

2008-11-10 Thread Eugene V Martin
I have been unable to get a LaCie d2 lightscribe DVD/CD burner (20x,
USB and firewire interfaces) to burn the label side. I have no problem
recording data or audio, but both lightscribe labeler and
disklabel report a communications problem preventing a label burn.
I am using a 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook with OS X 10.5. I have tried
using different firewire cables and I have tried burning from another
Mac, a G5 iMac, also using the 10.5.4 OS. Same result

I have consulted LaCie's tech assistance and gone through several
iterations of a process including trashing old files (apps and
receipts), downloading new software, repairing permissions, and
installing new burner and labeler software, etc.

Nothing suggested by LaCie worked and they accepted the burner for
repair; they said it worked for them, but they replaced the controller
(circuitboard), and sent it back. But, I still have the same
unsuccessful response from the burner and LaCie now suggests I try to
get help on lightscribe.com's discussion list! I am posting there but
I'd greatly appreciate help from the computer guys and/or suggestions
for other forums where I might get help. TIA

You might try running chkdsk on your drive to see if software
corruption is the culprit...

Re: [CGUYS] Help! Apple Mail Ghosts

2008-11-05 Thread betty
I opened the Mail folder in my Home library, and dragged the
INBOX.imapmbox folder to the desktop. Mail created another one, and
the ghost messages remain, and the Messages folder with in the Inbox
folder is empty.

...snip...
2) You should never allow any antivirus program to mess with your email
data. The data structure managed by your email program is complicated.
Your antivirus program hacked at it with no knowledge of how these files
are managed. It deleted the contents of a mail file, but may not have
deleted the file itself and it certainly did not adjust the index file to
match. So the email program's index is pointing to a file that is empty
or not there. Hence a ghost file.

This is the best argument I've seen for avoiding Apple's Mail program--the data structure
is complicated, as in OE. It's not so complicated in Mozilla's Thunderbird, so fewer
things are likely to go wrong. I dumped Apple Mail ages ago after using it for only a
couple of weeks. Went back and tried it again last week and dumped it again.

Have you backed up your email files this month? week? ever? Do you know where the
preference/data files are located?

Not fair and not correct.

Thunderbird and Apple Mail do virtually the same thing in this regard.
Thunderbird uses mbox format. Apple Mail uses emlx format. Emlx stores
one message per file within folders and these files can be accessed via
the Finder -- viewed directly using QuickView or a variety of other ways.
Mbox has a number of variations, but typically stores one folder per
file. Mbox files can be viewed in any text viewer. Both email programs
maintain a separate index file.

Apple used to use mbox and still labels many files with an mbox
extension, even though they are not mbox. I don't know why they do that.
Perhaps they consider emlx to be just a further development of mbox? It
is similar enough that one could argue for this.

I don't think the Apple Mail team possesses the sharpest pencils, but it
is not a bad product. Thunderbird is better in some cases, but the
feature sets are not identical. Either is a fine choice depending on
circumstances.

Either mbox or emlx are in sharp contrast to what MS does: storing all
emails in one huge, fragile database file that is constantly hit with
changes and hard to back up (due to its potentially huge size and
frequent changes).

I just spent 10 hours recovering 100s of lost messages from a 2.5 GB MS
database file. It was a brutal job. I'm now looking at alternatives for
my client.

Re: [CGUYS] Help! Apple Mail Ghosts

2008-11-05 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

One of the reasons I like the old Eudora (7.1)

Recently I had a major failure on my desktop system. I ran something
stupid and it corrupted my C: drive. Since I had recently upgraded
my drives I still had my old drive handy.

Not having time to get to it, I got the old drive and attached it
using an ID-USB cable to another system and copied the Email
directory to that computer and ran my Eudora while I was working on
the old system.

When I was done fixing my unit, I copied the directory back onto the
drive preserving all email and folders etc. and ran it on the fixed
system. No email lost and no problems.

I always keep my email in a separate directory (Folders and all) on a
data drive, not the C: drive.

I have simply gone into the right directory and restored mailboxes in
Outlook with out a problem.

Nobody mentioned Outlook and with so many flavors of Outlook out there I
don't have a clue about which Outlook you are referring to.

Anyone want to clue us in to the formats various Outlooks use to store
mailboxes.

On the Exchange server my understanding is that they use one humongous
and fragile database file. No?

Re: [CGUYS] Help! Apple Mail Ghosts

2008-11-05 Thread Alvin Auerbach

Thanks, David,

I rebuilt the individual account inboxes and the ghosts vanished
instantaneously!

Gosh, that was simple! Why didn't I think of expanding the Inbox?!

You are right that you can't rebuild the inbox. However, expand

and all of your other mailboxes, you'll get back some space and
you won't have the mismatch between messages showing and
actual messages as often.

I also second the idea of checking your mail via the web. I remember
once having a similar type of problem that was caused because
the message on the server immediately before the ghost message
was corrupted in a way that the mail server couldn't handle. If
you can, log into your account on the web and try deleting the
ghost messages there as well as anything preceding them
that looks suspicious.

If that doesn't work, I'd try again to move the messages out and
rebuilding the mailbox. This time try it t for just those messages in
the problem account, and keep holding the mouse down over the
new location when dragging them over until you can see that
Mail is ready to move them, because Mail can be very slow in
moving a lot of messages. This is particularly true for mailboxes
that haven't been rebuilt in a while.

Mathew,

Thanks for the idea, but when I try to move the messages, they just
bounce back to the Inbox. Also, Mail doesn't allow the Inbox to be
rebuilt (at least on my machine!). It would be interesting if it's
allowable on someone else's machine.

are blank - ghosts!

When I delete them, they remain in the Inbox.
When I drag them to another mailbox - Trash, Junk, anything, they
remain in the Inbox.
I used [command-delete]. Didn't work.

I checked Apple and Google, and found a problem like that with AOL
mail, and the solution was to update the OS. Both my OS and my Mail
program are the latest version.
I found a reference to a similar problem, but their solution was to
change the type of email account.
Rebuild the Mailbox does not apply to the Inbox.
I replaced the app from my Leopard disk.
The message count is often wrong, but I ignored it. Is this a clue?
I save most of my mail, and the size of my Mail folder is 1.45 GB.
Is that a factor?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to exorcise these ghost
messages?!

Download OnyX for the Mac OS you have:

http://www.titanium.free.fr/index_us.html

According to the thread here http://www.tidbits.com/webx?14@@.3cb7a1fc/
1 it has a selection to force a rebuild of all mailboxes. Check that
thread as there may be some other tips you can try as well.

1) You should not run antivirus software on your Mac because there
are no
Mac viruses. What ClamXav spotted were Windows viruses at most. You
have

no reason to worry about them. They won't spread.

2) You should never allow any antivirus program to mess with your

Your antivirus program hacked at it with no knowledge of how these

3) Two problem messages out of 1.45 GB of messages. Why are you
spending

any time on this? The odds are that in messing with this you will make
things much worse. I would leave it alone.
