Re: [DQSD-Users] How to install on windows 7 32bit system

2009-11-10 Thread Charlie Russel
If all you see is "Quick Search" on the bottom, it means the bar is there, but
hasn't got room to expand. You need to right click your toolbar and unlock it.
Then expand the Quick Search toolbar by clicking on the pebbled vertical bar to
the left of Quick Search and dragging it to the left to expand the toolbar.
(You can reduce the space required for the toolbar by right clicking Quick
Search and clearing the "Show Title" option.)

Thank you, Matt. The previous Vista theme wouldn't have been possible
without you, and this theme is all that and smart as well. Very nice.

Fellow DQSD Users.

Like most of you, I've been running DQSD for many years and cannot live
without it! It's one of the very first things I install on my Windows
taskbar. I finally got it to work flawlessly on my new Windows 7 x64 (RTM)
machine and it behaves and looks great IMO! I developed the Vista theme
(.css) (with Kim/Charlie) several years ago and now I've finished the
Windows 7 Theme. It looks like part of the Windows 7 OS.very clean and auto
adjusts to whatever "Window Color" (The transparent bar color) that you
choose using the Personalization Control Panel. Accordingly, multiple
themes (i.e. XP's DQSD) aren't really necessary. Please see attached
samples.

This theme OVERWRITES your current theme.css and is more of a hack than
using the traditional theme selection---yes, I was lazy this time. ;) Feel
free to adapt it or make it better and resubmit to the list.

If the attachments in this post aren't available in your reader, they are
here also:

http://vysa.net/dqsd.zip

Hopefully, Charlie or Kim will put this on the main page soon!

It's important to note that this theme is only for Windows 7 running in
"Smaller 100% DPI" mode and not the default 125% DPI.call me old fashion!
;) See Remarks inside theme.css file for more details.

Hope you like it and continue to use this awesome search tool on Windows 7
RTM!

Special thanks to Maud Dib for helping me get it to work properly on Windows
7 x64 using IE8 32-bit browser instead of 64-bit browser.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Windows 7 RC 64 Bit Install Help needed

2009-05-12 Thread Charlie Russel
Looks right (good job!) -- Now we'll need to do some work to make DQSD look
good on the new taskbar. The Vista look is better than the XP look, but still
not a good match for the new Win7 taskbar and Aero look.

Charlie.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Windows 7 RC 64 Bit Install Help needed

2009-05-11 Thread Charlie Russel
Another possibility is some sort of standalone application that could be
hot-key activated (that's fairly straightforward), and have a small
window that could be "parked" down in the lower corner of desktop. But a
Vista/Win7 Gadget is probably a more obvious fit, though would impose
more limitations on what it could do in terms of popping up additional
windows, etc.

I'm afraid I'm fully committed to Win7 at this point, even though it has
meant no DQSD for me. It wasn't an easy choice, I can tell you. I do
have DQSD loaded in my "Windows XP Mode" virtual machine on Win7, but
that's not all that helpful when I use applications there in RAIL mode.

I haven't even tried on Win7. Given the changes in the task bar, I'm not
confident that it would work. We are really up against it at this point, and I
think we need to find a way to work within the MS guidelines if we don't want
to face this every time they ship a new version. Perhaps as a Windows Gadget?

The x64 version of DQSD always uses the 64-bit version of IE. (This is because
it's a 64-bit DLL, and can't call a 32-bit EXE.)

Hey,

I was thinking that if I came across http://www.dqsd.net/ for the
first time now I would not even try to install it. The site needs to
be cleaned up.

E.g. currently it says for the Installation Instructions that you need
to be using IE 5.5 or newer...and to 'Please let us know if it works
on various other configurations.' Though further down it says "as of
version 2.5.0, thanks to Koen Mannaerts code contribution, you should
now be able to launch Netscape, Opera, or other non-IE browsers using
the deskbar."

Another small e.g., the first item in the faq
http://www.dqsd.net/faq.htm says:
"Can I assign a hotkey to it so I don't need to mouse to it?
This feature was added in version 3.0."
What use is that? :-)

I love DQSD and want it to remain vibrant. I think we been doing
ourselves no favours with the website the last number of years and
should think about redoing it. What do others think?

Cheers,

Tom.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Adjust Clock Font

2009-02-12 Thread Charlie Russel
Bill (and Kim) -- For some clues on how and where to change, take a look at
the Vista CSS file we did. (Look under Themes, Vista in the installation
directory.)

We had to do quite a bit of tweaking to get fonts where we wanted them in
Vista, and I think you'll find some good clues in that directory.

Be happy to, but it may have to wait a bit. Probably until at least the
RC, just so we don't have to worry as much about them doing something to
invalidate our work on it. And besides, I'm a bit buried right now. BTW,
the problem exists on 32-bit as well, so it isn't 64-bit specific.

2009-02-10 Thread Charlie Russel
> Cool, I didn't know that. I was worried that we might be facing
> *another* port to AMD-64 :)
No, no worries there. There are a very few things that one or the other
does slightly differently, and probably only the Intel compiler knows
what they are. AMD64 completely caught Intel by surprise, they were
trying to push everyone to Itanium. And when AMD came out with a very
fast, very compatible, 64-bit processor that MS agreed to support, Intel
basically had no choice but to clone it and play catch up. They've done
a good job of that, but AMD had seriously eaten in to their server
business for a while.

You're right, I realized that my systems all have weird legacy stuff
hanging around from my early testing days of this.

The key to Bill's problems were the requirement for full administrative
privileges, I'm sure. (I _thought_ that was called out in the readme,
but maybe not. Have to look.) And the requirement that the setupx64.cmd
file run from the same drive letter as your system drive. (or, more
accurately, as your %programfiles% drive.)
>
> Sorry to hear about Windows 7. We could look into what's breaking, I
> wouldn't give up so soon... :)
Well, it's going to RC soonish, from the sounds of it. I had it on build
7000 (the widely available public beta build) on a machine that was an
update from Vista where it was working. It loaded fine (but the colours
are all different again, so we need to deal with that), but as soon as
you clicked on it, Explorer crashed. Couldn't even unload it - the
attempt would crash it and it would reload with explorer.

As I mentioned, the colours are all different in Win7, so we need to
either recreate the work we did for Vista (not hard, but might be a bit
of a nuisance because the bar is a lot taller by default), or come up
with a way to better handle this on the fly, picking up our colours from
the environment. This is especially the case in Win7 since the task bar
changes colour and transparency along with the window theme. (Oh, and
the bar also does the Aero thing just like window boarders do if you
have an aero theme selected.)

But Win7 is the death knell of the task bar as we knew it. It's changed.
A lot. I still think that the way forward is a Vista gadget. This is
MS's official way to add this kind of utility to Windows and they're
less likely to break it than the taskbar. Also, the server version of
Win7 is 64-bit only, and this may well be the last and final 32-bit
client version. So we need to move to 64-bit as the core if we're going
to run as an Explorer DLL. (Gadgets free us from that requirement, by
the way. )

Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD Install Problems - Vista 64

2009-02-10 Thread Charlie Russel
Actually, in many ways, Win7 is better/easier than Vista. I'm really
looking forward to it being released. But for applications like ours,
it's really a challenge.

I've had to mostly stop using DQSD. Not what I wanted, I miss it every
day. But it crashes explorer in Win7, and I can't run it off the
terminal server without running a full desktop session. And I'm using TS
RemoteApps for most things these days.

I'd really like to see us have a Vista/Win7 gadget for this. It would
get us out of the UAC issues, get us off the taskbar (where MS doesn't
like anyone else to play), and give us some version neutrality. But
while I don't think it is a huge developmental hit, it's way more than I
can do any more.

Charlie.

Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD Install Problems - Vista 64

2009-02-10 Thread Charlie Russel
There's no difference in Windows binary between AMD64 and EM64T. The Intel is
simply a clone of AMD64.

Bill - try this:

Run the regular install for 32-bit. This will stuff things in \program files
(x86), and it won't work. Then run the "install" for 64-bit, from a temporary
directory on your system drive. Run this As Administrator.

That should work. At least it did here. (and no, I'm now on Win7 and that
breaks it again. I've about given up. Unless we create a Gadget for Vista/Win7,
I think we're doomed to be playing hopeless catchup.

Re: [DQSD-Users] comx /dilbert access denied

2008-11-10 Thread Charlie Russel
Yes, I've reloaded after changing the comx file. Heck, I've rebooted. But
this is Vista, with UAC on, so fussy. It was working until comics.com
changed everything, and still works in non-comics.com areas.

Shawn - if you can re-write it, I'd certainly appreciate it. The ability to
easily add additional comics would be a nice touch.

Thank you, Kim. The link is already showing on DQSD.net.

This is a huge day for those of us who live in 64-bit, and I really, really
appreciate your efforts to make it a part of the normal build process.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Search DQSD?

2007-11-27 Thread Charlie Russel
Yes, the NSIS installer was a problem, I remember that. I'll ping Brian and
see if he has some cycles...

It would be good to pull this together into a release and then we can move
foreward.

As always, if dev IT resources (as opposed to dev coding resources) are
needed, I can facilitate. Since I can't code (except the odd script or two
if we need them for registering stuff in 64bit as a workaround.)

Hello,

I'm sorry, I've lost track as well. We just moved, and I still don't
have any net connection from my development machine.

As I recall it, we came to the conclusion that it was hard/impossible
to build a 64-bit installer with NSIS. I started to look into other
installer options (WiX, most notably), but never got it working and
forgot the whole thing.

I don't know what happened to Brian's work -- would it help if we set
Brian up with commit rights, so he can send changes in himself?

I definitely think we should release something, a couple of people are
having trouble with keyboard shortcuts, but on the whole, the current
RC seems to be working well.

Once we have it out there, we can start killing off bugs if necessary.

FWIW,
- Kim

Re: [DQSD-Users] MS KnowledgeBase Search

2007-11-25 Thread Charlie Russel
My apologies. I forgot. This particular version of not quite right 64-bit
DQSD uses the
\Program Files directory for its binaries, but actually reads the searches
in \Program Files (x86). Now THAT's a bug I'd like to see fixed in a
released 64bit version!

Mea Culpa - I was replacing the wrong one!

Re: [DQSD-Users] Search DQSD?

2007-11-25 Thread Charlie Russel
Brian Peek did one based on the current RC. I don't know if it ever got
folded back in to SVN, however - that's outside my area of expertise. As I
recall, we had to manually (well, scripted) register the DLLs. That build
works acceptably on Vista 64 (with the GUI changes we did for Vista applies,
obviously), but it has one lingering problem - it calls the 64-bit version
of IE, not the 32-bit version. (This is the normal behaviour for a 64-bit
program.) Because of that, there are issues with a lot of sites, since
64-bit IE doesn't have any ActiveX.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Search DQSD?

2007-11-25 Thread Charlie Russel
Now I'm truly embarassed. :)

I've used ? to bring up the entire help file, of course. But never used it
as an alias to search for something within that help. But, _of course_,
that's what it does. Duh.

So, Kim, et al. What's it going to take to actually get a released version
that is both 32-bit and 64-bit? It seems like this RC has been out there a
while...

Charlie.

[DQSD-Users] Search DQSD?

2007-11-25 Thread Charlie Russel
Is there a search to search DQSD's searches? Sometimes I'm sure there must
be a search already there, but it takes me longer to find the existing one
(if I find it at all), than it does to just go directly to the site and
search the old fashioned way. If there isn't such a search, could we have
one, please? Thanks...

Re: [DQSD-Users] MS KnowledgeBase Search

2007-11-25 Thread Charlie Russel
Thanks, Kim. I'll try to grab the update. This is, of course ;-), on the
64bit version, since that's all I run. But that doesn't affect the search.

[DQSD-Users] MS KnowledgeBase Search

2007-11-24 Thread Charlie Russel
Appears to be broken. The problem is that MS have finally pulled the Q
leadin to the KB article numbers completely, at least on new ones. So our
pre-pending of Q to the number causes a failure. I looked at the XML, but I
don't seem to be able to get it fixed. Can anyone point me in the right
direction? Or provide an update, please? This is an extremely useful search
for those of us who have to support MS users and OS's.

Thanks,

Charlie.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Local aliases not working

2007-06-19 Thread Charlie Russel
You don't specify which version of DQSD you're using. If you're using
the latest RC3 Build, which you should be on Vista, you need to
completely uninstall all previous versions before installing DQSD.

I'm still DQSD-less, since I've been waiting until we have an RTM
version before asking someone to build a 64-bit Vista ready version. And
I only run 64-bit here.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Odd Math Error

2007-05-17 Thread Charlie Russel
It's all about binary arithmetic. Spreadsheets have traditionally had this same
issue. There are workarounds for it, but there's a substantial performance
penalty and in most cases it's simply not enough to worry about. The number is
always only off by one bit at the limit of your precision.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista issues

2007-05-03 Thread Charlie Russel
I did the theme, with help from several folks, especially Matt B. It IS
an improvement, isn't it? Now if I just had this as a 64-bit version,
I'd be happy. Unfortunately, I can't run DQSD these days since there
isn't a 64-bit one. I tried to do it myself, but no joy.

[DQSD-Users] Calendar and Local Events

2007-01-14 Thread Charlie Russel
As I added some calendar events to my local events file, I discovered a
bit of ugliness in the theme_vista.css file, which I'm working to
resolve. But it also brought up the question of how this all works. As
it currently stands, everything in the various calendar files
(calendar..xml) is listed as a "public_holiday". Which is fine.
And if I add in a second or third set of holidays, by adding them to
localevents.xml, then they work just fine(well, after I fixed the theme
file). But what if I want to add additional events, and have them colour
coded based on the type of event. So, for example, I might want to add
my wife's birthday to that local events file, and have the xml list it
as type "birthday". Can I then get it to display in a different colour
based on the xml type? And if so, how to do it?

Re: [DQSD-Users] Emailing: comx.xml

2007-01-14 Thread Charlie Russel
This is on Vista, this is the newest build, and this is on a machine that has
been working just fine until the new year. In fact, all the other comx searches
are working, except for Calvin and Hobbes. Well, no, Foxtrot is broken, but
that's to be expected since the strip is no longer produced during the week.
And Zits doesn't work, but that's a different problem and I don't think I ever
installed the required helper app on this machine.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Emailing: comx.xml

2007-01-13 Thread Charlie Russel
Still not getting it. I am running in non-administrator mode, if that
could be affecting things.

I'm going to try rebooting and see if it improves things.

[DQSD-Users] comx: Calvin broken again...

2007-01-13 Thread Charlie Russel
Something seems to have broken Calvin and Hobbes again. I tried changing
the year offset, and restarting, but that didn't fix it. So obviously
I'm missing something here. I know they're all repeats, but I miss my

See the Vista theme that I did, with help. Basically, you need two very
small .BMP files, and some editing of the CSS file(s).

http://tinyurl.com/y3elsy

has the files for the Vista theme.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista uglies fix...

2006-12-28 Thread Charlie Russel
Thanks, Glen. Users should note that there isn't a currently working
DQSD for 64-bit Windows Vista. When we have a build of DQSD that works
on 64-bit Vista, these files should work with it as well.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Hmmm. Not on that machine right now, but I'll try it again tonight when I have
a moment.

I'll pass on the excruciating one. And try the other, thanks.

Little red chevron is good. Though I actually think the best for the theme
would probably be silver. I'll try that later.

Thanks, Kim.

Nor mine. I wonder if there's a decent online reference for it. I'll
have to look around. It's all a nuisance, of course, since I don't have
a 64-bit dqsd to work with and only have one machine running 32-bit
Vista. All others are on 64-bit.

Give me a few days to poke around. I can probably sort something. Now
that I've gotten pretty much everything looking at least reasonable, I
won't have so many variables to deal with. I probably made too many
changes at once and lost track of something.

Thank goodness for gvim - doing all this editing in notepad would be
seriously painful.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Hi, Kim.

Yes, my localsearch was empty before I started. The one thing that simply would
NOT change in theme.css was the >> on the button. It stayed doggedly black,
which doesn't work on a very dark grey background.

I'll play around a bit more in a couple of days, when I have some time, and
maybe I can get it all back to where it is done in theme.css. If I can figure
out what is going on with the chevrons. I agree, that would be best. Then we
simply ship the theme_vista.css plus the two bmp files, and folks can manually
copy the theme_vista.css to theme.css and be done.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Kim -
I agree, I thought I should have been able to get this whole thing to work
with just theme.css. But some things just wouldn't "take" right and it ended up
looking ugly. Specfically, the >> button wouldn't change colour, and a couple
of other minor things. I'm not at all sure which one overrides the other. Maybe
this could be done entirely in localsearch.css? I didn't actually try that
scenario. But definitely theme.css alone wasn't sufficient.

I confess, this was just me poking around, no real knowledge about what was
happening where. And a lot of trial and error (which is a PITA with UAC turned
on, I can tell you!)

I don't by any means think these are definitive versions. Just my best guess by
the time I gave up at 1 AM this morning. The one thing I'm sure of though
is that it is WAY better than any of the existing themes in Vista. (You really
have to see the ugliness to appreciate it how bad it is.)

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
Correct. Users running Vista will need to take the provided files and
substitute them for "localsearch.css" and "theme.css". Our installation
should simply put them into the dqsd directory. Actually, the
localsearch.css should be renamed to "localsearch_vista.css" before we
make it available to folks so that it doesn't overwrite their own
version. Those who already have localsearch.css will want to merge their
customizations in with the provided css file, and then name it
'localsearch.css'.

In my working with these, I found it best to copy the files to my own
directory, make all the changes, and then copy them back under \program
files\quick search deskbar. You'll get a couple of UAC prompts, but
that's always going to be the case with Vista.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-18 Thread Charlie Russel
I've sent some theme files to Glenn. They fix the ugly blueness of the
XP look in 32-bit Vista. If anyone wants them before Glenn makes them
more generally available, email me offlist and I'll send them directly.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

2006-12-17 Thread Charlie Russel
Yeah, that works. But you can't use the right click menu to change themes. But
since that doesn't work in Vista anyway, I guess that's not too important.
(Permissions problem with UAC turned on.)

OK, I've got a bit map that works. Now I just need to figure out how to have a
calendar popup that isn't seriously ugly and light blue. A good background for
Vista might be a nice light grey - it at least wouldn't look odd. Though I
suppose a darker grey would be more in line with what the toolbar is.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Vista

I can take the necessary screenshots if someone can define what they
need a screen shot of. The problem is that the task bar in Vista is a
completely different colour scheme than anything XP.

RE: [DQSD-Users] COMX.XML - missing Joy of Tech & User Friendly (again)

2006-03-26 Thread Charlie Russel
You're right, it's going against comics.com. But I've cleared the
browser cache (both 32bit and 64bit ie), and definitely replaced the
comx.xml. And reloaded with !, of course. And via the >> menu. And I'm
even getting the popup, so that's a sure sign it's not the original
comx.xml.

I'm going to do a reboot in a few minutes.

Charlie.

Both dicktracy ones work fine. But either form of /forbetter hangs for a long
time, and then brings back nothing.

[DQSD-Users] COMX - another favourite goes away :(

2005-12-13 Thread Charlie Russel
Another favourite comic - Cat's with Hands - is no longer working, and
appears to have changed its deployment to something we'll have trouble
with. That makes two of my favourites that don't work -Cats and Zits.

RE: [DQSD-Users] RE: x64 Edition version 3.1.9.1 available (for Charlie Russel)

2005-12-13 Thread Charlie Russel
Nat -- No problem, I'll contact you off list.

For later or arrivals: There is a version of DQSD that runs natively on
XP x64 Edition, compiled by Kim, and I put together a little batch file
install. If you need it, just ask. (DQSD will not work in 32-bit WOW64
mode, because it needs to attach to the 64-bit task bar. )

[DQSD-Users] Comx request

2005-09-11 Thread Charlie Russel
Anyone feel up to trying to add "Zits" to the comx list? It's a King
Features one, so it's not available online at the more normal sources. I
have found it online daily at the Seattle Post Intelligencer
(http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/zits.asp), but parsing the comx.xml
file and figuring out how to get it to work properly is beyond me, I'm
afraid.

Charlie.

[DQSD-Users] x64 Edition version 3.1.9.1 available

2005-08-15 Thread Charlie Russel
Please contact me off-list if you would like a version of DQSD that runs on
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Kim
Gräsman we have a DQSDTools.dll file that is 64-bit and works in x64 Edition.
I've put together a crude batch file install for it and I'll provide the whole
thing to those who need it.

The mid term goal is to create an msi that can be used to do the install, and a
longer term goal would be to have a single, platform intelligent, msi that
would give us a single install for both platforms. But all that will have to
wait while our day jobs get done for a bit. For the moment, this rough and
ready batch file is all I could slam out over the weekend. It isn't
particularly bright, and doesn't give you a choice of where you want to install
DQSD -- it's going in %ProgramFiles% whether you like it or not. ;) Of course,
it's just a batch file, with local variables -- change the batch file if you
need it somewhere else.

Charlie.

RE: [DQSD-Users] x64 Version, please?!

2005-04-27 Thread Charlie Russel
I can certainly provide a build environment on my x64 box. I have an AMD
Athlon64 3500+ on an ASUS MB with 2GB of RAM. It can boot into 32-bit Windows
XP, x64 Windows XP, or Server 2k3 R2 for x64 (beta). Write me directly at:
Charlie At Scribes Dot Com and I can set up a remote desktop connection for you
to that box.

On compilers -- according to this:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winhec/partners/64bitAMD.mspx you should be able
to do it on 32-bit, if I read it right. (gg compiler amd64 32-bit)

On test platforms: I only have the one box, but I suspect there are more folks
out there on this list who actually have 64-bit capable boxes if anyone has
bought a new AMD box in the last 6-12 months, or an Intel in the last month or
two.

RE: [DQSD-Users] x64 Version, please?!

2005-04-27 Thread Charlie Russel
Yes, Kim, I have tried it. :(

The problem is that explorer.exe, and thus the desktop and task bar are 64 bit.
You can't use a 32-bit extension to a 64-bit app -- 64-bit apps can't call
32-bit dlls, and 32-bit apps can't call 64-bit dlls. So even if the hooks are
there, they're 64-bit hooks, and can't talk to the 32-bit DQSD. If DQSD were a
standalone app, it would work. As you say, the vast majority of 32-bit
applications work just fine.

There's a known workaround for context menu extensions (right mouse click stuff
like WinZIP) that allows one to run the 32-bit explorer.exe, but it doesn't
replace your desktop, only opens a separate window for Windows Explorer that
runs in the WOW64 subsystem (the 32-bit subsystem, IOW).

If you need references/pointers to appropriate developer level docs, I can
probably help, but I am NOT a developer, though I have written C code when I
absolutely had to. But it was a long, long time ago.

[DQSD-Users] x64 Version, please?!

2005-04-26 Thread Charlie Russel
OK, I know I asked this before, when the x64 version of Windows went
RTM. But not it is actually out, and showing up in the OEM/System
Builder channels. Any chance of an x64 version of DQSD? Please? I'd
_love_ to switch my main desktop over to XP Professional x64 Edition,
but I'd _really_ miss my DQSD.

I am _not_ a developer, but I'd be _glad_ to make a machine available
remotely to facilitate this. And I can install your compiler of choice
on it, as necessary (I have MSDN to cover that box.) If this offer makes
sense, contact me off-list.

Got it in one, Monty, thanks! Changed OneNote to autostart for this
particular project I'm on that I'm using it a lot for. And it got itself
loaded before DQSD got there. I only saw it after the crash, since that
was the first reboot after the change to OneNote. So I changed the
hotkey to Win-Q for QuickSearch in preferences.js, and all is well and
happy.

No and No. No programs were installed or re-installed in the interim.
There was a system crash (I've GOT to get a new DVD recorder, this one
stinks) and when it came back up, the problem was there.

[DQSD-Users] Error "Hotkey registration failed"?

2005-04-20 Thread Charlie Russel
After a system crash yesterday, I am now getting an IE error message
when I enable DQSD: "There was a problem initializing the enhanced
keyboard support - some key combinations and hotkeys may not work
(Error: 'Hotkey registration failed')"

System is Windows XP Pro SP2. Error occurs after doing the usual SP2
clicking to enable DQSD. I tried re-installing 3191, but that doesn't
seem to have solved anything. Arrow up through the previous searches
works fine, but it's now strictly one-way -- you can't arrow down if you
up-arrow one too far.

Charlie.

RE: [DQSD-Users] 64-bit version?

2005-02-26 Thread Charlie Russel
Yes, Windows XP Professional x64 is backwards compatible with most 32 bit
programs, running in WOW64. However, there are certain things that don't work
-- things like DQSD that runs an ActiveX component on the desktop. Or anything
that requires a driver - all drivers must be 64 bit. And a few other oddities,
but the vast majority of 32-bit programs work just fine.

Unfortunately, the 32-bit program in question, DQSD, is one of those few that
doesn't. Maybe the re-write that is intended to handle the SP2 issues will also
resolve this, I don't know. But I hope someone is checking!

Something else going on there, then. That’s
the way it 3.1.8 behaves here, certainly. I admit, I have downloaded but not
yet installed the 3.1.9 beta.

Thanks, Charlie. That would have been
exactly what I wanted, except it didn’t work. First of all, as soon as I
“approved” dqsd, I got an error about being unable to load the
enhanced keyboard or something. It said that some combinations of hotkeys might
not work. Then, when as you suggested, I entered just a question mark as the
search, I got an IE Script Error message.

Kim, by "refuse" I *do* mean the first thing you said, not
the second--i.e., the
security issue; not the annoyance.

I *do* trust you, intentions-wise; but I'd feel more comfortable in the
correctness

by
clicking "allow active content" I'm issuing page-specific, and not
global, permission.

to bring up help – bingo, it prompts you, again.

Kim, by "refuse" I *do* mean the first thing you said, not
the second--i.e., the
security issue; not the annoyance.

I *do* trust you, intentions-wise; but I'd feel more comfortable in the
correctness
department if you could site some authority or other evidence to support that
by
clicking "allow active content" I'm issuing page-specific, and not
global, permission.

I'm not enough of a developer to know the specifics of a particular
method of creating or enabling an activex object, _but_ I am a cautious
enough computer user to be more than willing to have to explicitly allow
such an object to run. And the key here is that I don't want dqsd to
mask or otherwise hide from me that an object is being run. I trust
dqsd. That's a specific trust that it has earned. It's not necessarily
transitive.

No way would I consider enabling ActiveX on my desktop globally.
Especially since it's nearly impossible to run as less than local admin.
That's a recipe for quietly having a zombie some day, or even a root kit
installed. I'm willing to let a specific application (ie, DQSD) run one
or more ActiveX components on my desktop, but it stops there. If we
can't find a more long term solution to the problem, I'm quite willing
to either give up the calendar (a minor loss, for me personally), or
click twice during logon, and if/when I open help. An annoyance, but
hardly life altering. A root kit on my machine would quickly become life
altering. So count me in favour of releasing a version with rolled up
fixes, with or without a more long term solution to the SP2 problem.

Charlie.
