Re: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
All of us on this reflector are painfully aware that LoTW has a problem, Additionally we all have seen this discussion go on ad nausium. All of us are concerned about the problem. None of this is new NEWS. So far I have told you nothing new. The complaining goes on on, and accomplishes nothing. SO, please let me ask; what do the complainers expect to accomplish by continuing to kick this horse? If you just like to hear yourself complain, please, just send the e-mails to yourself, and spare the rest of us from having to deal with all of the superfluous BS. 73, Mike, W5UC --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Re: [DX-CHAT] DXpedition Expectations
IMHO, the DX-Pedition operators will ultimately be the ones who must solve the problem. They will have to get tired enough to start imposing sanctions on unruly stations. Calling these Bozos out by callsign publicly isn't a viable solution, but privately taking note of who they are, and never answering their calls may get their attention. While I don't like the fact that there are General class ops operating out of their assigned frequency range, I am forced accept the fact that the whole licensing structure has gone to hxxx in a hand-basket, and for all practical purposes is meaningless. 73, Mike, W5UC **age treachery will overcome youth skill** **Management is the cesspool of life. If ARRL is not a friend of Amateur Radio, then: 1) Why do they provide a Volunteer Counsel program? I can tell you from personal experience that this program saved my fanny back around 1990 or 1991, and it didn't cost me one red cent. I had access to Chris Emlay, the League attorney any time I needed it, as well as a competent local attorney. We won the case. 2) Why does ARRL pay an attorney to represent us ar FCC, and to fight such issues as BPL? If they were simply a publishing company as you suggest, I doubt that they would waste time, money, and effort to work the BPL issue as intently as they do. 3) Why does ARRL work as diligently as they do to represent us at World Radio Conferences? They could just chug along with no effort in that direction, allowing those expenditures to go to the bottom line, and we would likely retain the frequency assignments that we currently have, and they could go on forever as a publishing company. This list could go on on, but I think you SHOULD get the picture. If you don't, then there is no hope for you. May I please suggest that you just sit back, relax, and appreciate the positive things that the League does for us, and cease wasting your time emotion trying to tear them(us) down. RE: [DX-CHAT] BS7H thoughts
Good Morning Bernie All: After seeing the video from 1997 I too questioned whether BS7 should be on the list. My conclusion is that it should never have been a new entity(don't ask me why, I don't have a good answer). However, now that it is on the list I do not believe it should be removed. In retrospect, a land mass clause probably should have been an original part of the rules, but it wasn't/isn't. You can't un-ring the bell. Move on. 73, Mike, W5UC At 05:59 AM 5/10/2007, Bernie McClenny, W3UR wrote: HS0ZCW, who sometimes operates as K4VUD said Maybe it is time to re-think the DXCC status of this place? This would set a terrible precedence! We must follow the DXCC rules otherwise we will destroy the very fabric of the integrity of the DXCC program. If we do as Charles suggests for BS7H what will be next? This is a slippery slope. Anyone could then make the same case for many other counters on the DXCC list. I won't give examples but one could easily list many more countries for their own personal reasons. We have gone down this road many times over the years. So there is no need to repeat this thread. There is one and only one way for a DXCC Entity (country) to be removed from the DXCC list. Notice I said removed! I don't think many people realize the next country that does not meet the DXCC criteria will be removed, not deleted, as there will be no more deletes because of the results of DXCC 2000. That's right a removal, which will be as if you never worked it! More on that discussion later. Back to the one and only way to remove a current counter from the DXCC list. The only way is if the said entity no longer meets the criteria in which put it on the list to begin with. Rules that are made up afterwards do not affect its status. Remember BS7H was added to the list back in the mid 90s. Then afterwards in an effort to not have any others added to the list like Scarborough Reef the 100 meter high tide rule was added. Believe me you don't want to remove anything off the DXCC list, unless it does not meet the criteria. I wonder how many have actually read the DXCC rules? http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/rules.html Notice I said read them, not understood them all! Some are hard to understand, but then again so are some of the counters on the list! See you in the next pileup? I come away of two minds... one with great appreciation and awe at the accomplishment and second with a deeper understanding of how truly dangerous this op was. Of course, I congratulate all who make this happen and especially to men who were willing genuinely to risk their lives to do the op. Let nothing take away from that. However, I have to ask if this set of rocks is worth the risks? I know mountain climbers die in their efforts and there are many other very dangerous sport activities, but should we as a hobby sanction placing our fellow hams into a place where the slightest bad weather, lightning strike, or just a nasty fall would have been an easy-to-happen disaster. How would we feel as hams if the worst had happened there? How much should we depend on LUCK? [DX-CHAT] Another Example
Here is another example of an entity that could reasonably be questioned. Because the environmental extremist zealots have the attention of the government of New Zealand, chances of working ZL9 are slim none.(before you get your shorts all in a wad, there is a difference between environmentalists, and environmental extremist zealots) Below is a note that I got from a fellow who, at least for now, is the only likely person to operate from ZL9: Hello Mike, I don't go to ZL9 for work, but I occasionally end up there as an unintended side-effect of our fish surveys in the area. Next Campbell Platform survey: Sept. 2008. More info at: http://homepages.woosh.co.nz/wk/zl9/zl9bsj.html Wilbert, ZL2BSJ ZL9BSJ/P This fellow goes there rarely, and for only very short (hours) periods. Since ZL9 stands between me and DXCC#1(I need ZL9 E3), I could possibly argue for it's removal from the list. At age 68, I have almost no chance at it since it usually takes years for the wheels of change to turn in a federal government. BUT, that's the way life is. I missed my chance in 2000; So be it. Let me throw another item in the mix. The guys out on the rocks are doing a great job. I wouldn't have the courage or physical stamina to do it. However, the huge splits that they are running is tearing up the bands, and I would venture to guess that some of the hecklers are those who have had their QSO's trampled by the large splits, and are pissed. Re: [DX-CHAT] The ARRL
I'll echo that! John, K5MO(and all you other league haters), please take a reasonable amount of time to sit and think of anything you can that is positive about ARRL. If you can't find anything you are likely among those who just like to bitch about ARRL, and don't know why. I can tell you for sure that back around 1991, they literally saved my butt through the volunteer counsel program. I had an excellent attorney, Jim Hayne himself attended the legal proceedings, and the folks who sued me over my antenna walked away with their tail between their legs. It didn't cost me one red cent. 73, Mike, W5UC At 10:05 PM 3/14/2007, you wrote: Double BRAVO!! The ARRL is not them, it's us! If you don't like the positions taken by your board member, tell him or her, and be prepared to stand for election next time to see if your views get accepted. But despite its imperfections, ARRL represents amateur radio worldwide (not just in the USA) better than any other organization, including IARU. I disagree here ! A particular point of criticism seems to be the DXCC branch, and the way it deals with DXpeditions and potential new DXCC Entities. As a member of the DX Advisory Committee, I'd agree that some of the executive decisions appear on occasion to be arbitrary (7O1YGF, BS7H, etc). Remember, this is only a game !!! But for better or worse there are some key threads which explain most of them: Take the long-term view; Support governments and national amateur radio organizations; And above all try not to risk the integrity of the #1 award in ham radio (memories of Romeo still hurt!). You all have brought back some fond memories. The examiner in Houston was Lyle Bebee. Actually a pretty nice fellow unless you got a pink slip from him. I never shook so hard in my life as when I went for my Extra exam (Jan 3, 1963). In those days the FCC issued a special blue certificate for Extra Class Licensees. Fortunately from where I lived it was only about an hour drive. Also, the exam wasn't a wussy exam like it is today. ie: Draw a schematic diagram of a push-pull power amplifier using triode tubes. Show the neutralization and biasing networks and the plate modulation system. (These were the days of AM and before SSB) Draw a schematic of a full wave power supply using a center tapped power transformer and mercury vapor tubes. Include the appropriate bleeder resistor and pi filtering network. Yeah, they really have it tough these days. 73, Merry Christmas Mike, W5UC age treachery will overcome youth skill http://www.suddenlink.net/pages/w5uc/ Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Pete, you are speaking in terms of a true democracy. That may be practical for small organizations, but as in the case of the US Government that is impractical. That's why we have a Republic(a representative form of government) rather than a true democracy. The League is structured similarly. Additionally, there are those like me who can not opt in or out with their dollars. I have been a life member since you could become one for $200.00. Sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. [DX-CHAT] Inverted L
Who is using, or has used an inverted L on 160 meters? For sometime I have been using a shunt fed tower with a significant top hat(a full size 2 element 30 mtr yagi). However, it is still a vertical, and at this location ground conductivity is average, and there is little room for an effective radial system. EZ-Nec indicates that I can get a fair amount of ground gain at a reasonable radiation angle. It does appear that the radiation resistance is down around 5 ohms, but I can probably overcome that with a matching network at the feed. I would appreciate your inputs on the inverted L. 73, Mike, W5UC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. None of the three antennas performed as well on receive as the transmitting antenna. I live in town and, of course, have no room for a beverage(except the cold 807's in the frig). So the questions are: 1) If you are using a EWE what did you do to get it to receive better than your XMIT antenna. 2) What are it's dimensions and what value termination resistor did you use? 3) If you are not using this antenna, what do you use for low noise receive antenna on the two low bands? Lot dimensions are approx 90 X 200. 80 meter antenna is a Delta Loop. 160 meter antenna is a shunt fed 70 foot tower with a full size 30 meter yagi as a capacity hat. [DX-CHAT] Yemen and other delights
Gentlemen, please allow me to repeat something I said when this came up the last time: I also have been reading most of this thread with limited interest, and Tony said it all. Yes, working them all is probably a little more important to me than Tony. I need BS7, VU4, E3, and ZL9. At almost 65, I Might have a shot at the last 2. However, if I don't work them all, so be it. I had my chances at the last two in 1999 and wasn't paying attention, and in my lifetime I have had a shot at all four. Shame on me, not the system. Quit whining and leave the system alone. It has it's problems, but don't we all? It has served us well since I started chasing DX in 1958. Good Luck on that Zack. I went there and found a High school where it has not been since one year before I graduated in 1957, and the 30 year old neighborhood where I live isn't shown on the map.. I usually use the latter. At the bottom of the page you can read the latitude and longitude to the second as you move the cursor around. You just have to find your exact QTH on the map and put the cursor on it. I often use this for hilltopping microwave operations when I need a 6-character grid square or even a 12-character grid square. It's just a matter of finding the hilltop on the map. The topo elevation contours make that simple. For anyone planning a bombing run, my home QTH is at 40 deg 06 min 19 sec N, 88 deg 11 min 45 sec W. :-) 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, 14 Jul 2003, Larry, K4WLS wrote: Many thanks Jack, TopoZone gave me the correct Lat/Long. Not exactly a level playing field. In pushing for a fresh start, I pointed out that W4DR would be the first winner and the next 10 were equally easy to predict. In the Challenge a golden opportunity was missed. 73, Steve WB6RSE There is another 'gotcha' in the DXCC Challenge, namely the inclusion of SIX METERS in the totals. Steve is right, there are NO surprises in the DXCC Challenge Listings. Just look at the I2EOW TOPBANDS List and then add in the 6M DXCC Totals and you can accurately predict the Top DXCC Challenge listees. Note that the Top Guns in the USA on 6M have around 140 'entities' on that band. This means that a Top Gun HF (only) DXer will still be 140 'points' below W4DR, W1JR, K8MFO, and others with high 6M totals after spending hundreds of $$$ to have their 12, 15, 17, 20, and 30M QSL's 'verified' by ARRL. Unfortunately, the DXCC Challenge Listing consists ONLY of the TOTAL number of Band Countries, including SIX Meters. Hopefully they will eventually come out with a TOPBANDS like listing that includes the number of (Current) DXCC Entities by BAND as well as the Total. Using LifeTime numbers for the Single Band DXCC Listings is another 'gotcha'. I grind my teeth when I look at the 40M DXCC Listing for example. I only need TWO entities on that band (BS and P5) but am 16 entities behind the leader, W8AH because AL has another 14 DELETED entities that I will never be able to add to my totals. It's WAY past time to use CURRENT ENTITIES for the DXCC Listings. If the OT's want recognition for their Deleted Totals, I have no objection to showing LifeTime or Deleted Totals following each call in the listing, but lets use Current Countries for the Basis of the Listings! [DX-CHAT] The cesspool
It became a cesspool of illegality right from the start and soon began its process of causing the general public to think of CB and ham radio as one and the same, since most people had no knowledge of the difference between the two. The advent of CB was the first giant step in the bastardization I am still reflecting on K4MK's remarks, and He is right on target. I too am old enough to have made a legal amateur radio contact on 11 meters with my mighty Harvey Wells TBS-50D. I was licensed as a novice in November of 1957, and became a general in January of 1958. In January 1963 I became Extra Class. It wasn't long after January of 1958 that I started chasing DX. I don't remember putting up with the BS that we do today when a rare country(entity) is on the bands. Pile-ups yes. Intentional QRM, VERY little. Let me preface the following remarks by saying that I have been a lifetime League member since 1962.(yep, they lost money on me) I believe in The League, and support it fully. Having said that, I am forced to recognize that none of us are infallible. The advent of the grow amateur radio at any cost mentality was the beginning of the end for amateur radio being a respectable fraternity. This trend has continued with Low-code No-code licensing and multiple choice exams. If we look at the current licensing structure, we aren't a helluva lot different than CB'ers. I wonder how many current licensees would have become hams if they had to draw schematics and do an Ohm's law calculation. I have no doubt that there are those among us who are ex CB'ers that have become good hams who respect the traditions of the hobby. There are far more who do not, and from this group comes the freebander attitude. If you think this attitude doesn't exist in amateur radio, go listen on 75 meter fone for a while. We are on a downhill slide that is likely irreversible. Therefore we MUST do everything possible to maintain what respect we have left. If that includes squealing on known violators so be it. K4MK is right. Most of the crap that we have to endure today comes from the attitude of lawlessness brought into our hobby by ex CB-ers. If this offends some of you, so be it. Come down on 7005 and we will duke it out at 35 wpm in a pile-up. I yield the floor. Outgoing Mail Scanned by Norton Antivirus 2002

[DX-CHAT] ZL9, Deletions, and other goodies
Let me put your minds at ease, or in a state of turmoil, whichever fits. Here is the text of a note that I receiver yesterday from Bill Moore regarding deletions: Hi Mike: In order to be deleted it much meet certain criteria. See Section II rule 5 (Removal Criteria). In the past countries have been inactive for many years and did not get deleted. I believe Albania was off for 20 years or so and came back on in the early 90's. So, just inactivity would not cause a deletion. 73 Bill Moore NC1L Therefore, those that are young, keep the faith. For those of us that are older, try to get much older. 73 de Mike, W5UC
[DX-CHAT] VU4
It sounds like the most practical approach might be for some Indian national(s) to attempt to get a member or members of the Indian Military interested in Amateur Radio. That would likely eliminate the licensing problems, and possibly provide ongoing activity. As for instant gratification being the reason to delete countries, I'm not sure that is entirely the case. It's kinda like owning a spark gap transmitter. It no longer has any practical application. If it were a lead pipe cinch that ZL9 would never be activated again, then it is similar in nature to the spark gap transmitter. The dilemma is that while we know that the spark gap transmitter will never again have a practical application, we can not be sure that never really means never in the case of ZL9, and this is what drives the attitude of the DXCC committee. To a great extent, our perspective on these issues is driven by our own positions. I have both KP1 and KP5 confirmed, yet do not have ZL9, VU4, or BS7. Having KP1 and KP5 confirmed means only that I am getting old and have been chasing DX for a long time. As for the others, they have all been activate in my lifetime, and unfortunately I was out chasing the all mighty dollar at the time. Chasing the all mighty dollar didn't turn out like I had hoped, and it cost me the opportunity to work the DX that I needed/wanted. That's the way it happened, heading west. (that will reveal my age to many of you)
